Since Joe made 4.01 redirect here, the episode data needs to be changed to 4.01 too. And the rest of the episodes after it, to off course (well, one for now). For what it's worth the casting sides (see below), call it 4.01 and 4.02. That's probably correct, since it's TWO episodes that belong together - possibly shown as one movie. Sci Fi's own "official web site" lists ship information with numerous errors. Heck, the press release for the series end was filled with heinous errors. It is best to wait and not jump ahead. Again....we already have a redirect for any searches on the term of "Razor", so we're covered. ::Obviously, since this is the last season, we don't need any official numbering policy and can continue to implement episode numbering on an ad-hoc basis. The trouble is where official resources disagree (the third season podcasts were consistantly numbered as if "Occupation/Precipice" were two episodes, while on said podcasts, RDM consistantly referred to them as if "Occupation/Precipice" were a single episode). My personal opinion is that it makes the most sense to label each hour of the season with its own production code, and to give mid-season ancillary material such as "The Resistance" and "Razor" the X.00 designation. 1.) Flashbacks to the Cylon attack from ''Pegasus'''s point of view. It counterpoints Adama by showing how Cain reacted to the news. The new character, Kendra Shaw, is shellshocked at first, but quickly pulls herself together. Scenes showing the destroyed Colonial Fleet.

After ''Pegasus'' joins the Fleet, Lee Adama finds himself reviewing herself. Similar to Starbuck she has some discipline problems and got busted by Fisk and Garner. Since he doesn't give a damn about those two and needs someone from ''Pegasus'' to work with him, he promoted her to be his XO.

2.) Flashback to the first Cylon War with a young William Adama flying a Viper sortie. Helena Cain is a child and living through an attack on her home colony of Tauron. The battlestar ''Columbia'' is destroyed (this must be the predecessor of the one destroyed in the second war). In the course of the fight Adama is shot down on some planet and somehow finds a lab where the Cylons experimented on humans. He sees on the of new basestars. This is directly before the Armistice, which is declared before he can do something about it.

All very interesting, but hard to source. And still subject to change. It tracks with everything else known though.

Mmm so it would seem that the rumors might be holding true that Virgin1 snagged the rights to the Razor telemovie. Luckily Virgin1 is available on Sky so BSG fans arent going to lose out. The tub apparently acts as a receiver from a Cylon download station (either planetary-based or via a [[Resurrection Ship]]) where the consciousness of a killed Humanoid Cylon is re-integrated into a new body to begin life anew. Other agents tend to the new body as its consciousness reforms, encouraging and comforting the recovered agent in a fashion that may be reminiscent to viewers as [[Wikipedia:Midwifery|midwifery]].

The [[Caprica-Six|copy of Number Six]] that plays a dominant role in the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies]] is resurrected in the tank, as is the ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]''-stationed [[Number Eight]] model formerly known as [[Sharon Valerii|Sharon "Boomer" Valerii]] ([[Downloaded]]).

The resurrection tank plays a principal role in [[boxing]] Cylons as well. The Cylon to be boxed is apparently killed and allowed to resurrect within the tank and just like the resurrection process, another Cylon is there to receive them. Instead of helping them to adjust to their new body, the Cylon removes a small data storage device from the side of the tank which is used to transfer the Cylon's consciousness. When the device is removed, the transfer is completed and the Cylon in the tank becomes lifeless. Apparently, a newly downloaded Cylon is too weak after the transfer to physically resist, aiding in the process ([[Rapture]]).

The '''Raider''' is the primary aerospace attack craft used by the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylons]].

The Raider is first encountered more than 40 years after the [[Cylon War]], when the Cylons launch their devastating [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies|surprise attack]] on the [[Twelve Colonies]].

The Raider is initially thought to be wholly mechanical in design, with a high-level AI controlling it. However, following the recovery of a Raider forced down during a firefight and recovered by Lieutenant [[Kara Thrace]] ([[Act of Contrition]]), the new Raider is found to be, in fact, biomechanical in nature ([[You Can't Go Home Again]]), incorporating a number of large organs in its design, including a biomechanical brain.

The Cylon Raider's intelligence level is less than that of a [[humanoid Cylon]]; it is more like a trained animal ([[Six Degrees of Separation]]). Much like the humanoids, the biomechanical Raider pilot's consciousness can be transferred into new "bodies" if it is destroyed. (Whether this process requires a nearby [[Basestar (RDM)|basestar]] or [[Resurrection Ship]] for the transfer is not known, although it is heavily implied in [[Scar]] that this is indeed the case.) While this death/rebirth process allows the Raider to "learn" from its mistakes and become a more efficient killing machine, the process can also cause Raiders to fight with deadly, almost-humanlike tactics ([[Scar]]).

Raider weapon configurations include:
* Conventional and/or nuclear missiles carried in internal wing bays ([[Miniseries]])
* Two [[Weapons in the Re-imagined Series#Viper and Cylon Raider|Kinetic Energy Weapon]]s mounted under the leading edge of the wings

During the Cylon attack, the new Raider could transmit commands to any Colonial vessel utilizing the Command Navigation Program ([[CNP]]). The CNP was compromised prior to the attack, and provides a backdoor that allows the Cylons to shut down Colonial vessels with the CNP, rendering the ships defenseless ([[Miniseries]]).

As with their predecessors in the Cylon War, Raiders also use [[wireless]] transmissions directed at Colonial ships, especially battlestars, to attempt to crack, or infiltrate the ship's computer network. If the cracking is successful, a [[Cylon computer virus|virus]] can be transmitted, which can severely damage or disable many battlestar systems ([[Valley of Darkness]]).

The Raider is equipped with a small-scale [[FTL]] drive system ([[Miniseries]]). Following tests on the Raider captured by ''Galactica'', this FTL system is found to be far more efficient in jump calculations than Colonial FTL systems. The drive shows its accuracy when Lt. Thrace takes the Raider from a point somewhere near the vicinity of [[Kobol (RDM)|Kobol]] back to [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Caprica|Caprica]] in a single jump ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I]]).

As with its nemesis, the [[Viper (RDM)|Viper]], the Raider is capable of atmospheric operations, which explains why it has retained an aerodynamic shape ([[You Can't Go Home Again]]).

The Raider is known as "sparrow" in Colonial pilot jargon ([[Maelstrom]]).

For the [[Battlestar Galactica (RDM)|new ''Battlestar Galactica'' series]], naturalistic science fiction means that characters are more three-dimensional, complete with flaws, neuroses, and even addictions. There is an attempt to stay away from stereotypical archetypes in science fiction or adventure stories such as the "smoking chauvinist," "loyal soldier," "heroic lead," "spiritual commander," ''Spock-type alien'', or "whiz-kid genius."

The characters change over time, showing different facets of their personalities: President [[Laura Roslin]] begins the first season cautious and rule bound; by the second season she has ordered that a high-ranking military member be assassinated ([[Resurrection Ship, Part I]]) and attempts to steal an election ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]). The [[Cylon (RDM)|Cylon]]s, who in the beginning are out simply to destroy humanity, later have a change of heart, feeling guilty about the destruction they have brought about, and decide simply to enslave them ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]).

Humanoid or other intelligent life (save that of the Fleet's nemesis, the human-created [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylons]]) does not exist, as almost all of the encountered planets will be mostly uninhabitable and lifeless.

The characters do speak of [[Life Forms of the Twelve Colonies|animals from the now Cylon-occupied Colonies]], and they share most of the names we use in the real-world Earth: for example chickens, dogs, cattle, and cats existed on their worlds. ::TPTB changed the name, but not on some of the items from the miniseries set pieces. It should be noted on the [[CIC]] page. I heavily updated that page with stills from a QuickTime 3D view of the set, but there's now a manual shown in one shot that shows a breakdown of the engineering and navigation areas. Don't read too deeply in that same diagram though; the filler text is from a Space Shuttle launch procedure. The large turrets found on Colonial [[battlestar|battlestars]] fire several types of ammunition, depending on the objective:

*Flak ammunition: this ammunition employs [[w:shrapnel|exploding metal fragments]] at high velocity, creating a defensive barrier around the battlestar which can shear enemy fighters or incoming missiles. This, along with the point-defenses, keep the enemy at a distance, allowing the battlestar's [[Viper (RDM)|Viper]] forces to safely deploy and engage ([[Scattered]]).

*Offensive ammunition: in this configuration, salvos from the main cannons are extremely lethal to the unarmored Cylons [[Basestar (RDM)|basestars]], which furthermore posess no such weapons or point-defense themselves. As such, this is a battlestar's main weapon against other capital ships ("[[Resurrection Ship, Part II]]", "[[Exodus, Part II]]").

It should be noted that the massive recoil caused by firing these flak rounds makes it impossible for the cannon to have a fast rate of fire like the battlestar's point-defense turrets. These shells are also too large to be loaded quickly and efficiently by crew members, and as such are loaded by mechanical hoists ([[33]]).

==Firing Solution==

When engaging enemy targets over any kind of distance, a '''firing solution''' must be obtained. This requires several pieces of information to be input to a battery's fire-control computer, including the target's speed, course, and range; and the firing platform's speed and course. The velocity of the shells would be known, and is constant, given that there is no air friction in the vacuum of space. The resulting computation would allow the gun captains to accurately aim their weaponry to such a degree that firing will result in a probable hit.

As with modern naval cannon, Colonial gun batteries have several modes of operation.

*Salvo Fire: this calls for a battery, or elements of a battery, to fire simultaneously at a single target. ([[The Captain's Hand]])
*Full Attack Mode: a battery's commander (Gun captain, "[[33]]") will target and engage targets of opportunity. <ref name="attack">During the [[Battle of the Resurrection Ship]], batteries are called to "fire at will".</ref>

On [[Mercury class battlestar|Mercury-class battlestars]], gun batteries can be set to one of several automatic firing modes ([[Exodus, Part II]]). It is unknown if the gun batteries on [[Galactica type battlestar|older battlestars]] have this capability as well. There are likely other modes of operation for these batteries, but none have been explicitly stated on screen.

The '''Raider''' is the primary fighter attack craft of the [[Cylons (TOS)|Cylons]]. Raiders are typically crewed by three [[Centurion (TOS)|centurions]]. Two centurions sit up front at the controls to pilot the ship, while the third centurion sits on a raised chair behind the others to command and coordinate ([[The Hand of God (TOS)|The Hand of God]]).

It is armed with two forward-firing laser cannons and can carry bombs in bays within the wings and on racks mounted beneath the wings ([[Lost Planet of the Gods, Part II]]). Oval in shape, the piloted Raider has two sublight engines for propulsion. The vehicle is both space and atmosphere-capable ([[The Long Patrol]]).

On extended missions, Raiders have been known to be accompanied by [[Cylon freighter (TOS)|fuel tanker]] tenders. This allows wings of Raiders to cross large areas of space (relatively speaking) at sublight speeds without the aid of a [[Basestar (TOS)|Basestar]]. This tactic is normally used on sneak attack missions, allowing Raider wings to slip past enemy defences undetected, whereas a Basestar would easily be spotted by enemy scanners ([[Saga of a Star World]]).

Despite their larger crew and greater potential for firepower, the Raider often finds itself outmatched by the [[Viper (TOS)|Colonial Viper]]. This may be in part to the greater maneuverability of the Viper, and the skill of the [[Warrior|Colonial Warriors]] that fly them. Apollo seems confident in his ability to defeat Raiders if they possess any fewer than 10 to 1 in numbers ([[Saga of a Star World]]).

== Advanced A-B Raider ==

The massive A-B Raider is an advanced form of Raider. It has a crew of five, consisting of two Cylon Androids ([[Andromus]] and [[Andromidus]]) and three Centurions. Its exact offensive and defensive capabilities are unknown. It seems to possess an offensive range far greater than that of conventional Raiders (and [[Viper (TOS)|Colonial Vipers]]) as well as some form of communication jamming.

In the only recorded encounter, Captain [[Kanon]] and Lieutenant [[Britton]] discover the A-B Raider while on recon duty in a two-seat version Colonial Viper. Unable to damage it with the Viper's conventional weapons, Kanon rams the A-B Raider, crippling both craft. The A-B Raider's trajectory causes it to crash on the surface of [[Earth (TOS)|Earth]], destroying all its occupants except its Commander, Andromus, and [[Centuri|one of the Centurion pilots]]. While Lieutenant Britton is injured in the collision, the Viper manages to limp back to [[Galactica (TOS)|''Galactica'']] to report their findings on this new threat and the fact that the Cylons have landed ([[The Night the Cylons Landed]]).

''FTL'' is a acronym for '''F'''aster-'''T'''han-'''L'''ight. The term refers to a means of interstellar propulsion utilized by the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylons]] and the [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)|Colonials]]. A common shorthand term for FTL travel is '''"jumping"'''.

The FTL drive makes interstellar travel possible for both the Colonials and [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylons]]. No longer confined to their own home solar system, the Cylons managed to avoid Colonial interference for 40 years after the [[Cylon War]] and establish their own home-world. However, not all ships — from small to large — are outfitted with these drives ([[Miniseries]]).

It is likely that FTL drives are not commonplace on many civilian ships because of the costs involved in using and maintaining the drive and the amount of [[tylium|fuel]] available. For some civilian ships that travel comparatively short distances between some destinations, such as the ill-fated [[Botanical Cruiser]], FTL may simply be impractical or unnecessary.

The technology behind FTL systems is such that, providing the relevant data is known, ships can jump with a high degree of accuracy, allowing ships to rendezvous in space and even "park" in a synchronous orbit directly above a given point on a planet's surface ([[Miniseries]]). Proper FTL use even enables vessels to arrive in crowded areas, such as the middle of an asteroid field or other ships, without the risk of collision and damage ([[The Hand of God (RDM)|The Hand of God]]).

No specific information on the technology of an FTL drive has been given in the Miniseries or regular series. We know only that ''Galactica'' has two FTL drives<ref>Dialogue from Colonel [[Saul Tigh|Tigh]] to Lt. [[Felix Gaeta|Gaeta]] instructs the tactical officer to "spin up FTL drives 1 and 2" in the [[Miniseries]].</ref>, and that other smaller or civilian ships have a single drive. We also know from dialogue that the FTL drives on ''Galactica'' are "spun up", suggesting the application of electromagnetic or rotational principles. Similarly it may be just a turn of phrase.

FTL jump drives can be used ''within'' an atmosphere. This Colonial tactic is used often to evade Cylon detection. While [[Raptor]]s primarily perform these kind of jumps, Admiral [[William Adama]] performs a daring intra-atmosphere jump at approximately 100,000 feet altitude with ''[[Galactica]]'' during the [[Battle of New Caprica]] to evade immediate Cylon detection. The battlestar jumps back to space a few hundred feet above the planet's surface after its Viper deployment. When ''Galactica'' jumps, the clouds surrounding it and the re-entry fires consuming its hull are "sucked" into the vacuum created by the sudden loss of mass. A sonic boom is also heard afterward ([[Exodus, Part II]]).

=== Colonial Limitations ===

* Colonial FTL systems are not small-scale, and cannot be installed into vehicles such as the [[Viper (RDM)|Viper]]. They can, however, be used on vehicles the size of a [[Raptor]], which is limited to brief, short-distance jumps. Raptors can make a sequence of short FTL "hops" in a row, to reach the same destination as a capital ship with a full-sized FTL drive ([[Miniseries]]).
* Colonial FTL systems cannot be used multiple times over a long period of time, for they are prone to breakdown after excessive, repetitive use ([[33]]).
* FTL jumps can apparently induce nausea or discomfort in some people, such as [[Cally]] ([[Miniseries]], "[[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I]]").
* When "jumping" the Colonial drive systems are limited in size; this defines the maximum size to which a colonial vessel can be built (hence the need for certain [[Galactica type battlestar|battlestars]] to retract their landing pods and reduce their overall cross-section prior to a jump ([[Miniseries]], "[[33]]", etc.).
* Colonial FTL systems appear to be a holdover from the [[History of the Twelve Colonies#Exodus|Exodus]] from [[Kobol (RDM)|Kobol]], and their current designs have been developed to meet the needs of jumping between the [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)|Twelve Colonies]], and their outposts in other star systems. Colonial FTL capabilities have defined limits, referred to as the [[Red Line]], beyond which jumps may not be possible / could result in damage to a vessel's drive system / lead to navigational inaccuracies that might put the ship at risk.
* Navigators must be careful to plan FTL jump paths in order to keep a safe distance from planets or other large objects ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I]]).

Knowing the limitations of their own FTL drives, a team apparently led by Lieutenant [[Felix Gaeta]] successfully refitted a [[Raptor]] with the navigational computer from a captured [[Heavy Raider]] (presumably the one used by [[Kara Thrace]] to return from Caprica in "[[Home, Part I]]"). They later use its improved jump plots (with the aid of the cooperative copy of [[Sharon Valerii (Caprica copy)|Sharon Valerii]]) to coordinate a squadron of Raptors to fly back to Caprica for a rescue mission to retrieve a [[Caprica Resistance|team of resistance fighters there]] ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I]]). Despite the accuracy of the advanced Cylon FTL technology and Valerii's aid in marking the jumps, two Raptors do not complete the mission. One obtains corrupted jump data and finds itself within a nebula and a undiscovered [[New Caprica|habitable planet]], and is forced to return to the Fleet. The second Raptor also receives corrupted coordinates and materializes inside a nearby mountain on the final intra-atmosphere jump to Caprica, with the loss of ship and crew.

=== Cylon Advantages in FTL ===

* Cylon FTL systems can be manufactured on a smaller scale to their Colonial equivalent, thus allowing the [[Cylon Raider]] to be outfitted with an FTL drive. ([[Miniseries]]).
* Cylon FTL drive systems are far more efficient than their Colonial equivalent. Tests with the Raider captured by the [[Battlestar]] ''[[Galactica]]'' ([[You Can't Go Home Again]]) demonstrated that the drive could enable the Raider to jump directly from the vicinity of [[Kobol (RDM)|Kobol]] back to [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Caprica|Caprica]] ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I]]) - a jump completed by Lieutenant [[Kara Thrace]] during her search for the [[Arrow of Apollo]] ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II]]).
* That superiority however does not stem directly from the FTL drives, but mainly from the superior Cylon navigation system, resulting in more accurate jump calculations. Colonial vessels interfaced with a Cylon computer can increase their jump range by a factor greater than ten ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I]]).

Given that the Cylons left Colonial space to find their own planet, it is possible that their longer-range FTL capability was created in response to a desire to be able to cover the distance between their homeworld and those of the [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)|Twelve Colonies]] with a single jump.

The Cylons may also be capable of [[faster-than-light communication]].

==Background to FTL in the Re-imagined Series==

In establishing the series the creators of the [[Re-imagined|new Battlestar Galactica]] determined to keep everything within the show very "[[Naturalistic science fiction|natural]]". This means steering away from the standard clichés of television science-fiction: no bumpy-head aliens, no remarkable technology such as matter/anti-matter conversion, etc. So how is the concept of faster-than-light travel possible within this precept?

===Underpinning Theories===

The FTL drive technology used within the [[Re-imagined Series]] appears to be based on the use of [[Wikipedia:Superstring Theory|Superstring Theory]] and [[Wikipedia:M-Theory|M-Theory]] that essentially enable the "jump drive" systems to "fold" space, reducing the distance between any two points by creating a "corridor" through space that links them together (essentially forming a wormhole, or Einstein-Rosen Bridge). Such "corridors" are allowed by the general theory of relativity; what [[Wikipedia:M-Theory|M-Theory]] does is provide a way to change the topology of space-time dynamically.

The use of such Wormholes is based on the tenet that space is curved. Hence the term "[[Wikipedia:Wormhole|wormhole]]", which arises from the analogy that space can be seen as an apple. A worm can travel from one side of the apple to the other in two ways:
* By crawling over the surface, or
* By burrowing through the apple (creating a "wormhole").
Obviously, the second option is considerably shorter than the first.

===Relativistic Acceleration===
A key point concerning the use of wormholes within the new ''Battlestar Galactica'' is that they do not break the fundamental limiting factor of our universe: the speed of light. Vessels in ''Battlestar Galactica'' do not accelerate to faster-than-light velocities. Rather, they use the wormhole to reduce the distance to their destination, thus giving the ''impression'' of faster-than-light travel.

However, the FTL jumps in the series do allow information to be sent faster than light can send it, which results in a violation of causality within the special theory of relativity. (ie. If event A comes before B from one viewpoint, there will be other equally valid viewpoints where event B takes place before A.) Causality is not violated by FTL in a universe that has a special fixed reference frame, however this contradicts current understanding.

This is the reason why FTL jumps are virtually instantaneous within episodes. It also means that the only ''direct'' form of propulsion available for vessels is generated by their [[Sublight Propulsion|sublight drive systems]]<ref>In turn, this is why vessels exiting from a jump are traveling at the same velocity as when they committed to the jump ([[Miniseries]], "[[33]]," "[[The Hand of God (RDM)|The Hand of God]]," and other episodes).</ref>.

===Feasibility===
While the use of wormholes in this manner is not currently possible, work is progressing on superstring and M-Theory which may make the creation of wormholes possible in the future. The limiting factor is the ability to generate negative energy densities, which are allowed (though severely restricted) by quantum mechanics. As such, the use of such systems again meets one of the stated desires of the the producers of the new Battlestar Galactica: not to rely on the "traditional" trappings of science-fiction that require exotic science and technology. Theoretical physicist [[Wikipedia:Kip Thorne|Kip Thorne]] has carried out extensive research into wormholes, and helped develop a scientifically-consistent means of wormhole travel used by [[Wikipedia:Carl Sagan|Carl Sagan]] in his novel [[Wikipedia:Contact (novel)|"Contact"]] which bears a remarkable similarity to the technology employed within Battlestar Galactica.

==Sublight propulsion==

In the Re-imagined Series, all ships have some manner of sublight flight ability. Sublight propulsion is convenient for intra-solar system travel (such as to or from the planets that comprise the [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)|Twelve Colonies]]), but cannot be used for travel outside of a solar system as the time to arrive at a destination may exceed the fuel supply of the ship or the lifetime of the crew that fly the ship.

Many of the ships of the [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]] are capable of landing on and taking off from planets, such as New Caprica. ''Galactica'' is never seen doing this, and its large mass might prohibit planetary landings altogether, but it employs sublight engines for normal spaceflight. Few of the ships appear to have extremely large propellant tanks as would be required for rocketry as it is presently understood, in spite of having aft-mounted thrusters. However, this might be explained by the properties of the [[tylium]] fuel. Especially smaller vessels employ rocketry-based [[Navigation in the Re-imagined Series|RCS thrusters]] for small course adjustments.

Vipers are equipped with a thrust reversal system to counteract or arrest their forward momentum ([[The Hand of God (RDM)|The Hand of God]]). No such mechanism exists on capital ships, but such vessels might turn by 180° to decelerate.

Cylons [[Basestar (RDM)|baseships]] do not have any nozzles or show any external sources for their propulsion ability. It is possible that force fields of the [[Gravity in the Re-imagined Series|artificial gravity]] generators are be the source of the sublight propulsion.

Both Colonial ([[Hero]]) and Cylon missiles used in combat appear to be rockets, leaving a trail of gas behind them.

The law of conservation of momentum requires that any propulsion system which adds momentum to a spacecraft or missile involves an equal amount of momentum be imparted in the opposite direction to something else, such as a reaction mass like rocket fuel, or possibly large masses like planets through use of a force field.

This noticeboard is a location to discuss and coordinate administrative tasks for the Battlestar Wiki.

It is my hope that this place can serve as a location for administrators to coordinate their efforts on the maintenance tasks of the Wiki (it's not ALL fun and games), as well as a spot for our contributors to be able to bring things to the attention of the admins if something needs to be done. Need a protected page edited? An article or picture deleted? Admins will watchlist this page so that your request won't get lost in the shuffle.

== Advertisement from hotest-tgp-pics.com ==

When accessing a page on BSWiki just now, I ran into a very annoying advertisement. Before the page had even loaded, I was redirected to [http://hotest-tgp-pics.com hotest-tgp-pics.com] (not even in a new window or tab, so it overwrote the page I was viewing), which in turn resized my window to minuscule proportions, then put up a message box over it. Because my PC is slow, I can follow this, but on a fast PC it would seem like my browser window had disappeared. The message box was a misleading advertisement from [http://www.systemdoctor.com SystemDoctor], stating there were errors in my Registry (I'm running Linux, so I don't even ''have'' a registry) and telling me to click OK if I wanted SystemDoctor to check my non-existent registry, or click Cancel if not. After clicking Cancel, I was led to SystemDoctor's download page. I used the Back button to go all the way back to BSWiki, where I finally got to view the page I was visiting in the first place. When I (voluntarily) revisited hotest-tgp-pics.com, I got a similiar advertisement from [http://www.errorsafe.com ErrorSafe], which was just as misleading and annoying as SystemDoctor's. A third visit led me to [http://www.errorprotector.com errorprotector.com], advertising (less obtrusively, though) a product similar to ErrorSafe and SystemDoctor.

I propose that this advertisement be banned from BSWiki for the following reasons:
# It is misleading (it ''always'' says there are errors in your Registry, even if your Registry is fine or you don't even have one);
# It is obtrusive, as it overwrites the page I'm visiting. Compared to this, popups would be a service (at least they leave your current page intact);
# It may confuse unexperienced users, because their browser window seems to vanish and multiple clicks on the Back button are needed to go back to BSWiki.

== Kara Thrace and Maelstrom Discussions ==

Admins: I just put my virtual foot down in the Character Elimination subtopic in the Humanoid Cylon Speculation article, asking discussions to cease, because unnecessary and circular debate on Starbuck was going on. The talk was a perfect example of what we're [[BW:NOT|not a place to chat forever]]. I know that Wikipedia has had a similar problem with other popular pages there, like the various articles for the TV show "Heroes." I don't want our wiki to look like an ugly Windows operating system with more banners and warnings than content like what Wikipedia has become, so let's be on our toes throughout the week to keep talk page discussions relevant and brief, warning users on their talk pages if necessary. Hopefully I'm not being too brash, but understandably there are many fans who are unglued by "Maelstrom" and we have to keep the consistency and accuracy of the wiki as well as managing questions but limit talk page speculation. As it stands, it seems to be one person attempting to argue against a crowd. This is NOT a democracy, so the sheer numbers shouldn't be the only deciding factor. My computer forgot to add the stylesheet one day and your pages came in view: white page, text and pictures only, no frames etc. ALL hidden text was revealed and to my surpise, it said under every character ...is a Humanoid Cylon.

:The problem is actually even worse. In the week after "[[The Son Also Rises]]" aired, someone Googled [[Romo Lampkin]] (a character introduced in this episode), and Google came up with the "Romo Lampkin is a Cylon" part of the page. Now Romo Lampkin is not a Cylon (as far as we know...), but it made him think he was spoiled. The templates we use should not output unwanted info at all instead of just hiding the table cell. It's easy to do with an <nowiki>{{#if:condition|then|else}}</nowiki> construct (Shane knows what I mean).

:It seems all the "bad ads" are all 3rd party ones not specifically AdBrite ones. Joe, you should set the ad zone to manually accept network ads. The "biodomes" thing appears to be a story concept that never made it to any level of significant development from the Singer/DeSanto project, so it can be included there. == Visibility of articles about "meta" topics ==

With meta I mean articles that deal with the show as in very general ways. Specifically [[Themes in Battlestar Galactica (RDM)]] and [[Philosophy in Battlestar Galactica]]. These are pretty interesting topics, but they are kinda lost. Mostly because they are entirely out-of-universe and thus can't be linked easily. So I'm thinking of creating something like "Twelve Colonies" series for these to make them more visible.

==Episodes of ''Battlestar Galactica''==

During its single season, the series went through a few phases, as the Fleet got farther away from the Colonies, and closer to Earth.
After the initial series pilot, where the Fleet visited [[Carillon]], the next stop was the mythic planet [[Kobol (TOS)|Kobol]] where the ancient birthplace of humanity was found. Together, these two stories established the mythos of the series.

Next, there were a series of episodes where the Colonials visited lost colonies such as [[Equellus]], [[Proteus]] and [[Antilla]].

In the middle of the season were some two part episodes that established foils for Commander Adama with the introduction of [[Commander Cain]] and [[Count Iblis]].

Then, there were some episodes that focused on the life of the Fleet, focusing on characters such as [[Chameleon]]. This was followed by a series of episodes based around the [[Terra]] arc.

Lastly, the Cylons, who had been absent for awhile, were reintroduced in the final episode of the series.

After the series' cancellation, the pilot was edited together into a new theatrical release, with certain scenes trimmed or edited out completely. This release is notable for the incorporation of the [[w:Sensurround|"Sensurround"]] enhancement system first introduced in the film [[Wikipedia:Earthquake (film)|''Earthquake'']] in 1974, and is considered by most critics as perhaps the only film where the technology was used properly. It was, in fact, the last of only four films ever released in the US to feature [[Wikipedia:Battlestar Galactica (film)|Sensurround]].

A series [[spin-off]] did appear some months later in the form of ''[[Galactica 1980]]''. Despite initially promising ratings, the show became victim to questionable writing that was heavily influenced by science fiction cliches. The show was generally panned by critics and fans alike (with the exception of its [[The Return of Starbuck|last episode]]). ''Galactica 1980'' was cancelled after only 10 episodes.

Despite three attempts over the years to launch a [[continuation]] series (the ''[[Battlestar Atlantis]]'' project from [[Glen Larson]], the ''[[Battlestar Galactica: The Second Coming]]'' project by [[Richard Hatch]], and the studio-endorsed [[Battlestar Galactica (SDS)|Singer-DeSanto project]]), it would approximately 23 years later before ''Battlestar'' fans would see a [[Re-imagined Series|new series]], but as a [[w:reboot (continuity)|reboot, or "re-imagined"]] version where the central theme remained, but a far darker storyline and significant character changes that would introduce a new facet in the ''Battlestar'' universe.

Original Series fans also enjoyed new stories (which generally ignored ''Galactica 1980'' plotlines) in several novels and comic books. Today, Dynamite Comics publishes an [[List_of_Comics#Dynamite_Comics|Original Series comic]] as well as two comics based in the [[Re-imagined Series]] continuity.

== Overview ==
Edward James Olmos was born February 24, 1947, in East Los Angeles, Calif., and raised in the Boyle Heights neighbourhood. He played baseball as a way to avoid street gangs and drugs, and became the Golden State batting champion. Turning to rock music in his teens, he became lead singer in a band he named Pacific Ocean (because it was "the biggest thing on the West Coast"), which released a record in 1968. Around this time he was attending East Los Angeles College and California State University, performing in clubs, and studying acting. His son [[Bodie Olmos]] portrays [[Brendan Costanza|Brendan "HotDog" Costanza]].

== Biographical Notes ==
He married Kaija Keel, daughter of actor Howard Keel, in 1971, having two sons with her: Mico and [[Bodie Olmos|Bodie]]. At this time, he started working as a jobbing actor in theatre and television (in which he appeared in such iconic television series as Hawaii Five-O, Canon, Police Woman, Kojak, and Starsky and Hutch) for a number of years until his mesmerising performance in the dramatic musical Zoot Suit (1978) led to a Tony Award nomination, a Los Angeles Drama Circle Award and a Theatre World award.

As a result of this recognition, he recreated the role for the film of the musical, thus kick-starting his film career; later that year he starred in Wolfen. This success was quickly followed-up with the acclaimed historical drama The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez and Ridley Scott's landmark [[Wikipedia:Blade_Runner|Blade Runner]].

Following this, he took on the role of Lt. Martin Castillo in the 1980's hit TV series Miami Vice. During his 5-year tenure on the series, the role earned Olmos an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award, plus an additional nomination each.

In 1989 Olmos received an Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of Jaime Escalante, the dedicated, real-life math teacher of Stand and Deliver, and in 1992 he made his directorial debut with the powerful feature film American Me, in which he also starred. In that year he also divorced his first wife, Kaija Keel, after 21 years of marriage.

He was honored with a Golden Globe Award and an Emmy Award nomination for his work in the 1994 HBO production The Burning Season, the story of Brazilian political activist Chico Mendes. Olmos also played Jose Menendez in the CBS miniseries Menendez: A Murder in Beverly Hills that year, and was the executive producer of the award-winning NBC documentary Lives in Hazard. In 1994 he also re-married to actress Lorraine Bracco. This marriage was also to end in divorce in 2002, after a 5-year separation.

In 1995 Olmos starred with Jimmy Smits and Esai Morales in the landmark Latino-American drama My Family / Mi Familia, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Gregory Nava. Olmos starred in the ABC miniseries Dead Man's Walk, the prequel to Lonesome Dove, and played Abraham Quintanilla, the strong, supportive father of singing star Selena in the hit biographical drama Selena. Olmos physically transformed himself for the role, gaining 60 pounds.

Olmos' recent work includes appearing in 2 segments of the critically-acclaimed television drama series The West Wing, in which he played Supreme Court hopeful Judge Roberto Mendoza. He also took the title role of the 2002 NBC miniseries Steve Martini's The Judge, for which he earned an Outstanding Actor nomination from the American Latino Media Arts Awards; the PBS series American Family, created by Gregory Nava; the Showtime telefilms Bonanno: A Godfather's Story, The Princess and the Barrio Boy, and In the Time of the Butterflies, with Salma Hayek, in which he played Dominican Republic dictator Rafael Trujillo. He provided the voice of the wise Pre-Columbian village chief in DreamWorks' animated The Road to El Dorado. Among his many other films are Triumph of the Spirit, Talent for the Game, Caught and The Wonderful Ice Cream Suit, based on a Ray Bradbury story.

He has hosted or narrated documentaries including Zapatista, The Unfinished Journey (directed by Steven Spielberg), Good Cop, Bad Kid and Father, Son: America's Desperate Passage.

== Other endeavors ==
The Americanos Project, produced in conjunction with the Smithsonian Institution as a national museum tour, a feature documentary on HBO, a book of photographs and text about the Latino community across America, a CD, and a concert extravaganza; and the 2002 Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival, co-produced by Olmos and featuring the work of more than 100 Latino filmmakers representing 13 countries.

In 2006, Olmos served as Director for made for television feature film ''Walkout'', based upon the true story of a Mexican-American student activist who protests the ant-Mexican bias present in the American educational system at the time. Olmos worked with Battlestar Galacticas' ''[[Exodus]]'' director [[Félix Enríquez Alcalá]] on this project, who served as the features co-producer.

Olmos participates in many humanitarian efforts, which include working with the David Rockefeller Foundation in the recruitment of new teachers for U.S. schools. He is the executive director of the Lives in Hazard Educational Project, a national gang-prevention program funded by the U.S. Department of Justice, and a national spokesperson for the Southwest Voter Registration Project, where he helps the Latino community in its pursuit of citizenship and voter registration; the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation; and the AIDS Awareness Foundation. He played an instrumental role in the clean-up efforts after the Los Angeles riots, the 1994 Los Angeles earthquake and Hurricane Andrew in Florida, and Hurricane Mitch in Central America.

For his work portraying Admiral William Adama on ''Battlestar Galactica'', Olmos has been nominated for an [http://www.almaawards.com/nominees/tv/index.html ALMA Award]. The ALMA Award recognizes positive portrayals of Latinos in television, film, and music.

Olmos was briefly mentioned in the book GIT-R-DONE by Larry the Cable Guy as The Faceless Anouncer.

==Joining ''Battlestar Galactica''==

When [[Ron Moore]] and [[David Eick]] were casting the roles of [[Laura Roslin]] and [[William Adama]], they used [[Mary McDonnell]] and Edward James Olmos, respectively, as the template for their "ideal" casting choice, which they didn't think they'd actually get (i.e. "The perfect person for this role would be Olmos, but we'll never get an actor that big"). However, Moore and Eick were shocked when both McDonnell and Olmos agreed to join the show. Thus the character of William Adama was written with Edward James Olmos in mind.

Unfortunately, Commander Adama is unable to convince Adar to launch their Viper squadrons or place the other battlestars on alert. Adama chooses to launch his squadrons against Adar's orders, feigning a battle drill, and activates the battlestar's [[Defensive shields|shields]] to meet any attacks.

Realizing that the Raider fleet is far away from any locatable [[Basestar (TOS)|basestars]] to support them, and after seeing [[Serina|press reports]] of other Raider attacks on Caprica, Adama realizes that the Twelve Colonies themselves are in mortal danger from basestar attacks, and orders ''Galactica'' to speed away to Caprica. The battlestar arrives too late; a handful of humans survive the genocidal onslaught.

I don't get why death disproves a character as a Cylon. We're talking about the final five here. If one of them died, they would of course not reappear on board the fleet, but could very well appear as one of the final five later. {{unsigned|Bradtem}}
:As noted (ad nauseum) on the talk page of the Humanoid Cylon speculation article, death removes a character from suspicion because ONLY a Cylon can return from the dead. If the character returns, they are obviously a Cylon. Until the other Cylon characters are actually revealed on-air, however, we don't know who has returned (and cannot speculate further--that's fanwanking). == Why are any of these eliminated ==

I've said it before, but Saul Tigh as Cylon seems to confirm it. I don't see how any of these characters can be eliminated. Based on Tyrol, it seems likely that Final Five cylons can breed without trouble. I see nothing in the show to indicate they are at risk from the virus. Age and having fought in the Cylon war are not barriers -- the Final Five are, as is now clear, a different breed of Cylon that, like Tigh, are older than the Cylons we have seen in the show. I see nothing that says they can't breed, can't be somebody's child (Tigh was a teenage warrior, Tyrol remembers his childhood though that could be a fake memory) can't handle the virus, can't have brothers and sisters or have long associations. It's very likely (I would even say close to confirmed) that they are older than the colonies themselves.

Alas, even the above rule that a character that returns from death must be a Cylon is now false. We certainly aren't sure that the returned Starbuck is the final Cylon, and there's evidence she is not.

I suspect we need to rethink the page about the remaining member of the Final 5. Nobody (except the 11 known Cylons) is eliminated from suspicion. If they're that old, there's no reason they couldn't have developed an immunity just like the humans.

Hi you added something to my talk page recently. I just rewatched the scene in Kobol's Last Gleaming part 1 where Elosha, Billy and Roslin discuss Kobol. Billy says the ruins on the planet are 2,000 years old. Elosha responds that this corresponds with when the 13 (not 12) colonies left Kobol.

While I agree you're probably right about the 13th colony leaving for earth 3,600 years ago and the other 12 colonies only a mere 2,000 years I do think the article should reflect the fact that Elosha's comment is not entirely accurate. [[User:Meteor|Meteor]]

I noticed a comment in my talk about why you removed notes about the real Earth as homeworld for Humanity some months ago, feeling they were fanwanking. At the same time you pointed to pages about the sacred scrolls and various fan theories about the Exodus or Exodi in the show. In order to learn, I wanted to understand the difference. Is it just where I put it? My goal was to add only factual information. While I realize that the Earth in the show is going to be somewhat fictionalized (if we ever see it) there is an important difference between an Earth that had a different history than ours, and one where the science is so different that you might as well say Mars had canals (a common SF trope from before the 60s) or that rocks fall up.

However, where is the proper place to speculate what theories of Earth are consistent with what the writers are trying to show us in the program? The question of whether, in the re-imagined series, Earth is a colony of Kobol, or instead Kobol is a colony of Earth (and why that was covered up) is an important one to the show, and there are a number of clues in the show pointing to the latter case. {{unsigned|Bradtem}}

::While the theories and speculation may be fanwanks, tracking down the real clues found within the show that back up or refute speculations is a worthwhile function for a wiki, in my view. However, it does mean you probably need to make references to the theories to understand why a real canonical detail is important to note. For example, Adama calls the Lagoon Nebula by the name M8, which is an 18th century Earth designation. That's either a writing error or pretty hard evidence regarding theories of the origin of Kobol and the colonies in the show. Either way it's worth noting, and the context is important. Sometimes there isn't even a theory. Today you removed an addition to the article of the Temple of 5, where I noted that there are 6 drapes and 5 figures standing on 5 of them, one is vacant. I don't actually know what that means in terms of speculation, but it smells like it's important so I was surprised to see it removed. In addition, my addition of information on Tyrol's reluctance to destroy the temple is also, in my view, important -- Tyrol is demonstrably under some external influence when it comes to the temple, so again I think it's important to understanding the temple, not just to the story of the episode, though I don't yet know why and did not include any speculation as to why. I ask this because it's obviously no fun to contribute items just to have them reverted. I try to stick to facts and information from actual episodes when editing pages that are not meant for speculation. --[[User:Bradtem]]

::We've really been lucky to have all the regular podcasts be as timely as they have. On the other side of the coin, though, it does save RDM time on the DVD side as they apparently package that up as the DVD commentary so at least they don't have to back into the studio later. The term "'''final five'''" collectively describes five of the twelve [[Humanoid Cylon|humanoid Cylon models]] whose identity, knowledge, or existence has been deliberately or accidentally lost to the known existing seven Humanoid Cylon models.

[[Caprica-Six]], when asked by Gaius Baltar about the five missing models he has not seen on the [[Basestar (RDM)|baseship]] he lives on or on [[New Caprica]], curtly replies that the others do not talk about the subject ([[Torn]]).

==The unauthorized quest for the Five==

A [[Number Three]] copy, which [[Gaius Baltar]] calls by her human alias, [[D'Anna Biers]], repeatedly commits suicide to get glimpses of five white-cloaked beings that she believes are images of the final five. She attempts to draw what she has seen, but has difficulty in doing so ([[Hero]]).

One sketch shows what looks like two men and three women. One is a man with dark hair and a widow's peak, one is a middle aged woman with shoulder-length hair, one appears to be a woman with long hair, one appears to be a man with short, possibly thinning light hair and one appears to be a young woman with very short hair. If this interpretation is accurate, that would make six male Cylon models and six female Cylon models in total ([[The Passage]]).

Baltar's ability to see a virtual doppelganger of Caprica-Six (as well as enjoying her company in various pleasant environments) lead him to suggest that he might be using a Cylon technique known as [[projection]]. This suspicion, in turn, makes Baltar begin a personal inquiry into his own nature after allying himself with D'Anna-Three.

The two eventually make their way to the [[algae planet]], where a Colonial structure, the fabled [[Temple of Five]], awaits with possible answers ("[[The Passage]]", "[[The Eye of Jupiter]]"). When the system's dying star goes nova, a ray of light is generated by the mechanisms of the temple. D'Anna steps into the light and suddenly finds herself back in the [[Opera House]] and before the same image of the Five, not persistent. Upon seeing their faces she recognizes one of them in particular, saying in surprise "You... forgive me... I had no idea." She is then pulled back to reality and collapses in Baltar's arms, apparently suffering the effects of a brain hemorrhage. She dies before she can tell Baltar what she saw. She tells Baltar, "You were right," but dies before answering about what. She tells the [[Cavil]] who greets her in the tank that there are five other Cylons, and he will see them some day.

The identity of the person she recognized remains a mystery ([[Rapture]]).

==Interpretations==

While the Re-imagined Series notes that there are a total of twelve humanoid Cylon models, only seven have been seen thus far. Although the Number Threes believe the images they have seen during resurrection and in the Temple of Five are, indeed, images of the final five, the series adds a contradictory interpretations of what is seen and what is truthful.

===Connections between the Colonial gods and Cylon god===

*The Temple of Five was built over 4,000 years prior to the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies]], long before the Cylons existed. The [[Thirteenth Tribe]] would, logically, have no knowledge of these automatons in the strictest sense. However, the Thirteenth Tribe has significant prophetic insight, as shown in the works of [[Pythia]]. According to Colonial scriptures, "Five pillars of the temple were fashioned after the five priests devoted to the one whose name cannot be spoken". This may have been another Lord of Kobol, given that on a deleted scene [[Elosha]] noted that the fall of [[Kobol]] and its civilization was due in part to a "jealous god".

*On [[New Caprica]], D'Anna/Three meets [[Dodona Selloi]], a human [[oracle]], who relays a message from Three's God, despite the oracle's association with the Lords of Kobol.

*With this information, there is a strong, but unexplained correlation or connection with the the Cylon God and the Lords of Kobol.

===The Eye of Jupiter and Kara Thrace===

*The Eye of Jupiter storyline introduced an association between Kara Thrace, a human that "doodled" a circular image as a child with no prior derivation (her old apartment on [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Caprica|Caprica]] has a painting of the image from the episode, "[[Valley of Darkness]]"), and the mandalas or icons of the eye that decorated a temple built 4,000 years before her birth. No further information is revealed other than the prophesy from [[Leoben Conoy]], who told Thrace of an unexplained "destiny" ([[Flesh and Bone]]).

===Illusion or Truth===

*Only the Threes, and no other characters, have seen the visions of what they interpret as the final five Cylons. Like Baltar's virtual Number Six, this may be something other than genuine; the other Cylons themselves [[boxing|box]] the entire line of Threes after her discovery, but whether this is done to suppress the notion or actual information of the final five or to relieve the other Cylons of an aberrant model is unclear.

*As the Temple of Five was apparently built for human usage, the Temple may have only allowed the transitional visions that the Threes see to be more persistent and clear. It may never be revealed what Baltar (or another human) would have seen. While Baltar believed Three and actively participated in her quest, both his virtual Six and a [[Hybrid]] noted that he, not D'Anna/Three, was intended to use the Temple's imaging mechanism as the "chosen one". The human association and significance of the five priests, the god they worshiped, and their connections with the Cylons, Kara Thrace and Baltar are not yet explained.

The mother of [[Kara Thrace]] was a former member of the [[Colonial Marine Corps]] who fought in the first [[Cylon War]]. Thrace was stationed in a jungle planet or moon, after which she suffered from [[w:Entomophobia|entomophobia]] - the fear of insects. She retired at the rank of Corporal ([[Maelstrom]]).

While being interrogated by Kara Thrace, a copy of [[Leoben Conoy]] claims that she had been physically abused by her mother, long ago:

Later, a [[Simon]] copy notes that Kara Thrace's hands show indications of broken bones, speculating that she endured abuse at the hands of a parent ([[The Farm]]).

Thrace appeared to be a chain cigarette smoker. Her sparse apartment has only a handful of items, particularly a medal from her work in the Cylon War.

Leoben's claims of abuse are confirmed by her daughter when she discusses one incident to her husband, [[Samuel Anders]]. Kara Thrace reveals that her mother broke her hand by holding it against a door jamb and slamming the door shut, to punish her daughter for placing plastic insects in her clothes; in return payback for earlier abuse at the hands of her mother.

Thrace was diagnosed with a cancerous gastric tumor six years before the destruction of the Twelve Colonies by the [[Caprican Colonial Forces Veteran's Hospital]]. Vowing never to return to see her mother, Kara Thrace never saw her mother before her death.

She is given a mysterious opportunity to visit her mother at her deathbed ([[Maelstrom]]).
