[[User:Matt72986|Matt72986]] made an interesting, though I think incorrect catch regarding what we think Starbuck has said in the Mini-Series about the Adama's information on the loss of 30 battlestars in the opening hours of the Cylon attack. She says, "That's a quarter of the fleet." From here we've collectively presumed that she spoke only of 30 out of 120 ''battlestars''.

While Matt could be right as there may be other ships, there is one assumption that RDM has not appeared to change from the TOS to the RDM continuity. While there are certainly other kinds of Colonial military vessels, likely designed to carry or deploy troops, or supply other ships, the battlestar is THE battleship/carrier/capital warship of the Fleet. All other ships are deployed to service it, not the reverse (unless an older battlestar supports a more advanced one).

The only other Colonial fleet ships noted in RDM are:
*Variations of the [[Space Park]] (although the one in the ragtag fleet is not military)
*Unidentified ships in the [[Scorpion Fleet Shipyards]] that were destroyed along with 3 other battlestars

I'd be happy to return Matt's change if there is a significant reason to think that the battlestar is not the primary and most abundant fighting warship in the fleet. Kara was shocked when she heard the news--an armada of battlestars--let alone one, like ''Galactica''--is a mighty deterrent, or so they thought. Comments? So the question is, did she mean fleet of Battlestars, or the Fleet itself? I think it is more likely she meant the Fleet. Remember, the Fleet is analagous to the Navy. So if someone says to me "we lost 30 aircraft carriers" and I say "that's a quarter of the Navy", that just means that there's 120 ships in the Navy and that those 30 carriers represent one quarter of the Navy. Now if I had responded "that's a quarter of the fleet" one could assume I was referring to the fleet of carriers. However, we can't make that assumption in this case because the organization itself happens to have the same name as the military term. So until we know for sure, I think it makes sense to say "ships" in the wiki, because ships could be either something else or Battlestars, so it accounts for both possible meanings of what she said.

:::Also to support my belief I point to the timeline. There were 12 Battlestars created at the start of the war 40 years ago. That would mean they built 108 of these massive ships in 40 years. If we do the math, a Battlestar is approximately 24 times the volume of an aircraft carrier, so it would require the resources to build about 2592 Nimitz-class carriers (and that's not even counting the more advanced tech a battlestar has over a carrier). Even with 12 worlds working together that seems unlikely, especially given the other expenditures a 12-world government must have.

If the carrier were taken out, the effective fighting power of that unit is all but gone since air supremacy will determine the survival of the smaller ships. If a battlestar is taken out, the remainder of the battlestar group, its support ships, likely haven't a prayer for the same space fighter superiority reason. With that in mind, when Kara says a quarter of the fleet, this isn't likely aren't strictly the battlestars in this context, but ''all'' of its support vessels as well. THAT would make the context very appropriate, and may also explain why we didn't get any secondary military vessels to join up with Galactica: they were probably destroyed easier than the battlestars. I also think battlestar groups are larger than others and contain several battlestars (or there are fewer groups), so some battlestars may have been eliminated solo, but some patrolling groups were also hit. As Galactica was being decommissioned and older, she was likely part of another battlestar group, but on solo patrol. I also generally agree with Ricimer: The Colonies became close to being anilihilated in Cylon War I. The various things they did during and after: primitive technology, the heft of original battlestars, [[Case Orange]], the [[Articles of Colonization]]--all point to a government and society brought to its knees. They would be enough people who lived through that to ensure that they would never have that happen again. Since there are 12 worlds, then it stands that each world's forces are pretty vast since, as Douglas Adams said, space is big. :::::::I think that is the point everyone is kind of missing here. What I am pointing out is that "Fleet" and "fleet" in the BSG universe have a very different meaning. "Fleet" refers to the organization itself (see Navy analogy). "fleet" refers to a group of ships, in this case possibly the Battlestars. My main point is that we should make this Wiki as screen-accurate as possible to ensure it remains canon. We do not know if Kara meant "fleet" or "Fleet". Until such time as we do, we should not make assumptions in either direction and use the word "ships" in place of "battlestars" because "ships" accomodates both possible solutions. "Battlestars" assumes she said "fleet" and that is an assumption which should not be made.

I know, it sounds a little over eager. I took several zoom in snap shots of the 12 banners both in the mini-series and also in Colonial Day. These are definitely the icons and the colors. Icon was a name used and so far the planet relative to Libra has not been mentioned. This is the only colony I find debatable. Certain colonies may not go with certain standards such as Aquarius or Leonis. I made this with flash in between my summer graduate classes. ::QuintusCinna = Yes, these are vector based using Flash. I've been having fun building a flash battlestar galactica encyclopedia, but was glad to see you already had this even though my flash stuff was nearly finished. If you pay attention to the flags behind, they are all at random placements and that they are placed differently than that of the miniseries' memorial at the end. I played with the idea that the memorial's flags were in order of when they were nuked while the flags on Cloud Nine were placed in order of their signing the Articles of Colonization. It's purely guess though. Note that in Colonial Day, the Sagittaron flag is at the farthest right while Tom Zarek is somwhere in the middle. This clearly shows to me there is no relation between the flags' placements and the delegates sitting.

:::If you want these images to be used to their fullest, it would be best to output them as high-resolution anti-aliased PNGs. The wiki software can scale them down for use in individual pages, and we could place them along the right-hand side of the relevant articles.
:::Question 1: Is Libra's colony is really called "Icon"? Where did you see this? I can't remember if Libron or Libris or whatever has been mentioned out loud in the series yet. What's your take?

::::Question 1: I have not seen any information telling me there is a colony called Libra as of yet though I have watched each show probably about 7 times (I'm addicted). I'm still waiting. The Tomb of Athena did mention Libra, though. I do know that in the mini-series, Commander Adama or Laura Roslin said something like: "And the following colonies have been destroyed... Picon, Arelon, Sagittaron, Icon..." This isn't an exact quote but the subtitles even showed the word "ICON" which caught me off guard. The statement left an emphatic relation that it was more likely 1 of the 12 colonies instead of a moon like Trevor.
::::Question 2: The symbol on the side of Galactica is the flag for the 12 colonies unless I haven't been paying attention. It's like the US flag for the USA. In the center of the memorial flags at the end of the mini-series shows a black standard with the Phoenix icon in the middle and Battlestar Galactica BSG 75. This suggests to me that this is their symbol.
::::Question 3: I looked at the copy I have twice for Home, Part II and my copy is just way too dark. I would need to see better pictures to help me out because I'm not sure. I assume there would be a connection, especially since I remember Roslin saying Leo's constellation represents the flag of that tribe (which we can assume to be Leonis). Your pictures turn out so clear. I need to figure out how I can do the same.

::::::I don't know the shapes of all 12 Zodiac signs off the top of my head (and maybe we should get some pictures of them in order to display along with these flags for others who want to compare this kind of thing), but Picon (aka Pices) is a couple of fish, usually one over the other, head to tail. I could see that symbol being derived from it. Also, Gemenon would be Gemini, the twins, which are usually depicted by something kind of like this: L7. Additionally, Scorpion looks like the symbol might have a tail with a stinger... Tauron's symbol '''could''' be a bull. DRADIS (Direction, RAnge, and DIStance) is a detection, identification and tracking system, somewhat similar to radar, used aboard colonial warships. Much like real world radar, there are also stationary DRADIS stations. The Cylons were able to jury-rig the DRADIS assembly from a [[Heavy Raider]] into a stationary DRADIS tracking array. This is an unfortunate acronym, since "range" and "distance" are redundant with each other.

Carbon composites are largely invisible to DRADIS scans ([[Flight of the Phoenix]]).

DRADIS is likely a central component of the [[Computers|Navigation computer]] on ''Galactica''.

== Notes ==

The "Direction, RAnge, and DIStance" breakdown of the acronym "DRADIS" was listed in an [http://www.twiztv.com/scripts/battlestar/season1/galactica-ms1.pdf early manuscript] (PDF) of the first half of the [[Mini-Series]]. Since some major elements of this script were changed (such as Kobol being the sole home of the Colonies, and not separate worlds) in comparison to the completed teleplay, canonical use of this breakdown should be taken with some skepticism.

However, there still is some evidence to suggest that the original breakdown is the canon version. In "Kobol's Last Gleaming Pt. 1" Crashdown performs a DRADIS sweep of Kobol. That aerial survey is then presented to the President. For a brief moment as she is just taking the survey image out of Billy's hand you can see the DRADIS information printed on the image. The letters on the image are clear and are as follows:

The numbers may not be accurate or complete as we cannot see much further to the right of the image. However, given that the letters do represent numerical values, most fan-suggested alternatives for the breakdown of DRADIS would seem to be unlikely.
