new contributor - audio episode guides?
Hello! Sorry to be a newbie, but, I've been a fan of the BSGWiki for quite some time, and I finally got a working headset and decided to give something back to the site if I could - I recorded the episode guide for '33' according to the script given on the Audio project page, and I was wondering where I should upload it for verification and such. If I did everything right, I should be able to record most of the audio for the episode guides within the week if you guys want - this seems like an interesting idea, I like doing voiceovers and audio work, and the Lords know I can't edit a wiki to save my life XD

Just looking to be pointed in the right direction, and asking the admin for help might get me there ^^ Thank you, Kobayashihikaru 14:41, 22 October 2006 (CDT)

: Hello! Nothing wrong with being a newbie! Anyway, all files are to be uploaded to the Media Wiki. Just a question, though, how big is the MP3 file, because I may have to increase the upload limit on the server. Look forward to hearing back from you! -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 14:57, 22 October 2006 (CDT)

:: Whoa, thank you for the quick response ^^ I just finished recording the audio for the third episode guide, for Bastille Day, and so far the largest of the three is 2.3 MB in size - I tried to keep the file size down as much as I could out of compassion for those of us with dialup and for the BSGWiki server.
:::: Okay, I uploaded the files to the MediaWiki, but I'm not sure where I have to go to flag them for review. The verifications page is coming up as an 'edit' link, and I somehow don't feel like I have the authority to make the page for the stuff I did to be reviewed at. >.> I'm going to provide links to the audio files here, so you don't have to go hunting for them - I -think- these links should work...

:::::No need to be sorry. :-) Actually, the verifications page hasn't been set up yet, so that's why your getting the edit page. == Regarding the questions section ==

"Questions - yet again, this section is for questions -- not possible answers to questions!"

It just doesn't make any sense. A questions section without answers has no real purpose. I've seen speculative material posted over and over again at that section. Some questions are pertinent, but there are others which can be easily answered and shouldn't be there.

:The problem was that people went too far with it, especially at the beginning of Season 3. There were lots of trivial questions and overly lenghty replies. Also back and forthing where other people replied with counter arguments and questions, leading to lots of fanwanking and baseless speculation and opinionating. Very annoying to read.
:To me, the current solution feels restrictive too, but otherwise it's hard to draw a line on what to allow and what not. However, I agree that some questions have answers that could easily be explained within the context of the episode and without speculating much (like deducing Helo's or Kat's rank from their pins). Still, it's better than what went on before. --Serenity 07:16, 9 November 2006 (CST)

:As Serenity points out above, people went too far with the questions section. We're an encyclopedic reference, not a message board. Firstly, much of our episode guide format is derived from the Lurker's Guide to Babylon 5 (an excellent resource that pre-dates even Wikipedia), and we use its methods as a guide to our own episode guide. Secondly, any answers to questions given in the episode can be placed in either the analysis or notes sections, which is the more pertinent place for answers. Also, in general though, may I suggest that you comments of this nature to the Wikipedian Quorum, since this is more a general question and not specifically a question I should (alone) answer. Thank you. :-) -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 09:17, 9 November 2006 (CST)
new contributor - audio episode guides?

Regarding the questions section

Hi, Kahran. Could you tell us your source for the first name of Laird? Please note that "official" naming comes from the aired episode, including credits, and RDM (through podcasts or other official comments on the episode). Sites like IMDB, fan pages or news pages, and (strangely enough) sometimes even the Sci-Fi Channel official page are not good sources for this kind of information as they contradict each other. If you haven't found this name from an official source, we can put in a Note on the article that it is non-canonical until we get confirmation (as we did with many pages, including Galen Tyrol, Racetrack, Kat, etc. Spencerian 17:47, 28 September 2005 (EDT)
Flags
Can you please explain the edits you made to the colonial flags? I am curious as to how you concluded which flags went to which colonies, as QuintusCinna and I have had little luck in determining this. I'm also concerned by your lack of a source, and the fact that some of your assignments contradict on-screen evidence from the episode "Colonial Day".

Additionally, you seem to have duplicated a number of the flags I uploaded under different names, rather than simply uploading new versions. We should fix this situation. Please reply here. --Peter Farago 17:56, 3 October 2005 (EDT)

::Upon reviewing certain sceens in Colonial Day earlier and checking the flags shown on the Twelve Colonies page I noticed several discrepancies betwen what appeared on the screen and what appears on this Wiki. Primarily Virgon's flag which is shown with an orange symbol with a white centre on a yellow background with green and orage stripes. I also noticed that Canceron's flag shown in close ups had two green stripes along side it. "Libra"'s flag also had two grey stripes on the outside of its two red stripes. I did not change the order of the flags on the Colonies page, they were like that when I found them I simply updated them. By process of elimination I deduced that the one unused flag not listed on the Colonies page had to the Aquaria's flag. The multiple files were a procedural error of mine and I appologize. I am terribly sorry if I am in error on any of these updates, I was simply trying to relay what I thought were carefully analyzed and edited representations of the Colonial Flags. Feel free to revert any changes that I have made to the Colonial page and the images that I updated. I appologize. Kahran 18:35, 3 October 2005 (EDT)

:::Don't apologize, I appreciate your contribution and comittment to accuracy with respect to flag coloring. I'll work on getting the images moved over to the right places, just for consistancy's sake, but don't worry yourself. There is one thing I'd like to point out, which you should consider for the future - many of the flag assignments on the Twelve Colonies page are tentative, so process of elimination is not a good means to determine unknowns. I know it seems odd to say that the wiki itself is not a trustworthy source, but remember that anyone can edit it. For a list of reliable sources, see Battlestar Wiki:Citation Jihad. --Peter Farago 18:45, 3 October 2005 (EDT)
::::All done. Thanks for your attention to detail. Do you think any of the other flags are miscolored? --Peter Farago 18:11, 5 October 2005 (EDT)

:::::You're much welcome. As a matter of fact, I was just looking at a very high-detail behind the scenes picture from Epiphanies posted on SCI-FI's BBS. The picture showed a relatively up close image of the Colonial flags on set at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver. The picture seen here shows nine out of the twelve flags in fair detail descending into the background, unfortunately Tauron and Canceron's flags are blocked out by a white balance placed in front of them and Leonis' flag was folded over by the wind. None the less it is worth taking a look at. -- Kahran 22:41, 5 October 2005 (EDT)
Image Format
Kahran, when uploading screen captures, please use the JPEG format. PNG is not very efficient for photographic images, and is best suited for line art. --Peter Farago 11:12, 22 February 2006 (EST)
:I'll work on that next time, its just that my capture program defaults to png format for snapshots. -- Kahran 16:31, 22 February 2006 (EST)
::As does mine (VLC). So I end up having to fire up Photoshop and save to JPEG for each pic I plan to upload. I still prefer this to the capture programs that save to the clipboard, however, since you are then forced to process each capture as you take it. I'd rather be able to take multiple captures and then pick and choose which ones I want to convert and upload later. The holy grail of screen capture software (for me) would kick out to a high-quality (user defined?) jpg file, and would have both frame by frame as well as the ability to specify time index. Ideally all of that would be free (as in beer, as well as in speech), but I'm betting anything that did all of that would cost $. --Steelviper 16:38, 22 February 2006 (EST)
I use VLC as well and I just open paint and save as a JPG. The only hard part is getting that perfect clear frame. --Talos 19:18, 22 February 2006 (EST)
new contributor - audio episode guides?

"Questions - yet again, this section is for questions -- not possible answers to questions!"
Overview
:Starbuck and Tigh create divisions between those who suffered under the Cylon occupation of New Caprica and those who stayed with the fleet. Meanwhile, Baltar tries to prove his worth to the Cylons.

Summary
On Galactica
* Galacticas air group runs war game exercises among the viper pilots. Captain Thrace breaks formation during the exercise and collides with another pilot, forcing an end to the war games, and causing Apollo to remove her from flight duty.
* Felix Gaeta meets with Laura Roslin and William Adama to discuss matters Baltar related. During the year before the Cylon Occupation of New Caprica, Baltar was obsessed with analyzing the data from Kobol to find the path to Earth. Based on passages in the Scrolls of Pythia, Baltar identified a nebula he believed to be a landmark on the road to Earth.
* Upon Thrace's return to her bunk, she is met by Kacey and her mother, whom she dismisses, telling the Kacey's mother not to come again.
* In the pilots' mess, Lt. Sharon Agathon is given the callsign "Athena." Thrace and Tigh begin to sow dissent between the survivors of New Caprica and the crew that stayed behind on Galactica
* Adama confronts Thrace and Tigh on their behavior. He challenges them to shoot him, as their constant complaining is tantamount to pulling the trigger. When neither do, Adama demands they shape up and move on with their lives.
* Spurred by Adama's words, Thrace cuts her hair and appears to return to duty. Later, in uniform, she visits Kacey and her mother.
* Meanwhile, Tigh returns to his room and begins drinking to excess, finishing off one bottle and starting another.
* In a Raptor, Athena and Racetrack jump into range of the Lion Head's Nebula, and are excited to find what the Scrolls described. They quickly realize, however, that they have jumped right next to the dying Basestar.

On a Basestar
*Gaius Baltar, onboard the Cylon basestar, is having another hallucination. On a sunny beach, Gaius praises Six for returning to him in his time of need, and states that he enjoys having conversations with her. Six implores him to learn anything and everything about the Cylons, as he will need the information in the days ahead. Six also tells him that the Cylons use forms of projection to see the world around them, and when asked what she is, Six tells Baltar that she is an angel of God.
*Having been allowed to stay on the Basestar, Caprica-Six and Three talk with Baltar later on, inquiring about the location of Earth. Gaius initially denies having any knowledge of where Earth is, but then reveals that he does have clues as to where its probable location is. He then finds out that the Cylons intend to find Earth so they can use it as their new home.
*Baltar is apprehensive about helping the Cylons, and Caprica-Six tells him that the Cylons are also leery as to whether his intentions are true or not. Caprica-Six leads Baltar through the ship, telling him that she uses a projection of a forest to navigate the ship. In his mind, Baltar realizes that his form of projection is similar to what the Cylons are using, causing him to question whether he is human or a Cylon.
*Caprica-Six informs Gaius that his rescue of Hera and his assistance in finding Earth has made him a valuable asset, and has gone a long way in impressing the Cylons. Baltar asks why there are only 7 models on the ship, and inquires about the remaining 5 models. Caprica-Six informs him that they don't talk about it. He asks whether they would recognize one of the others, but their conversation is interrupted by Three before she can answer.
* Three informs Caprica-Six that there is a situation, and a Five states that the basestar that went to check the pulsar has not responded back. The group head to a control center, where Baltar finds out that the missing basestar has been infected by a disease, and that any Cylon that dies and uploads to a Resurrection Ship will spread the virus even further. On the urge of his internal Six, Baltar offers to board the infected basestar and collect scientific information.
* Before he leaves on his mission, Baltar encounters the Cylon hybrid that controls the functions of the basestar. The hybrid is hooked into the systems on the ship, and continually vocalizes her seemingly non-sensical thoughts. Caprica-Six informs Gaius that it is thought by most of the Cylon models that the hybrid has gone insane from being connected to the Basestar and that her words hold no meaning, however the Leoben model takes the hybrid's words as coming from God.
* The Cylons provide Baltar with a Raptor to board the baseship, and when he arrives, he finds numerous Cylons, either dead or dying. He collects blood samples and takes pictures of the area to bring back for analysis, and also finds a large manmade object in the hold of the ship. He then finds a dying Six model (curiously with black hair), who informs him that the device the Cylons captured, a probe left by the 13th Colony, infected all of them, and wants to die so she can be released from her pain. Even though Gaius offers to bring her help, she tries to attack him, and Gaius strangles her to death.
* Upon his return to the Basestar, Gaius denies finding anything that could have caused the outbreak of the virus, but Caprica-Six notices the probe object in Baltar's picture, but doesn't let on to anyone else what she has discovered.

Questions
* Would it be possible for the Colonials to salvage the derelict basestar for their own purposes?
* What has happened to the remaining five Cylon models? Are they so secretive that none of the other 7 variants have any knowledge of them? Did the Cylons permanently box the other models because they were dissenters to the cause of the Cylon race?
* What is Caprica-Six going to do now that she realizes Baltar may be withholding critically sensitive information?
* Cally and Chief Tyrol as seen both working on the deck. Who is taking care of their baby? Has a system been put in place to take care of crewmembers' babies?
* Is Athena infected with the Cylon virus? (Answer)
* As the probe is supposed to come from the 13th Tribe, and is affecting Cylons, does that mean that Cylons have been exisiting in times of the 13th Tribe? (or is just by accident that is viral for Cylons?)
** What is the "genetic pool" that the human form Cylons all come from, and has it existed for longer than the Cylons themselves?
** Could the people on Earth be aware currently that the Cylons are after them, and have sent the probe to hinder the Cylons' efforts?
*** Probably not: Baltar says it "looks old, it looks very old". The probe must have been floating for years.
** The probe may have worked this time, but now the Cylons are aware of the danger it presents, and they won't fall for it again. Does that mean that for each of the 12 constellations, there will be a new "trick" that Earthlings use to hinder the Cylons' efforts to find Earth?
* Is the virus biological or technological in nature? The "inevitable once we took human form" and "genetic pool" lines indicate that the Cylons think it is biological. On the other hand, their belief that it could survive through a download process implies that it is technological in nature (i.e. computer virus). This would seem to be a contradiction. Is the virus both biological and technological, like the Cylons themselves?
* Why did then-President Baltar investigate clues to Earth's location, given that he advocated abandoning that very search in his election campaign?
** Probably he performed such investigation prior to his decision to remain in New Caprica. Due to his secretive nature, it's possible he wanted to use such information when he thought it was the case.
* Why is Lee Adama a Major again? Is it a case of brevet rank?
** You can see it written on his viper, but he was a Major when he stop flying and became Pegasus commander. So, they probably didn't update his rank on the Viper. Besides, how can he still be commander if he has no ship to command ?

Analysis
*The crew-position shuffle continues from last episode, but some definite decisions have been made:
**Lee has been demoted back to Major, and has resumed the CAG slot, with Kat and Hot Dog as senior pilots under him. Kara is as well, until Lee revokes her flight status for reckless behaviour.
**As mentioned, it seems Kat has been demoted from CAG to leader of Blue Group (Although "Blue Group" may only exist for training purposes and not be a permanent viper squadron).
**As implied in "Collaborators", Helo has resumed the XO slot aboard Galactica.
**Gaeta appears to have inherited Baltar's mantle as the scientific advisor (it is unclear whether he holds any additional positions), and is focusing his efforts on refining a course for Earth.
**Cally is shown working the flight deck alongside her husband, showing that she is once again active in the Fleet.
*Following her actions during the Battle of New Caprica, Sharon seems to have garnered some degree of acceptance among the Galactica air group.
*"Athena" is the name of Adama's daughter in the original series. This may be an allusion to the changing relationships on Galactica: Sharon Agathon has replaced Kara Thrace as William Adama's surrogate daughter. (He tells Thrace, "You were like a daughter to me once. No more.") As Hot Dog states, Athena is also the name of a Lord of Kobol.
*The Baseship hybrid appears to be viewed by the Cylons in the same way as the Centurions and Raiders. The hybrid has no vote in the Cylon decision-making process, despite its ability to express its thoughts and feelings, after a fashion.
*The Cylons have a Raptor and flight suit at their disposal, possibly acquired during the occupation of New Caprica. This raises the possibility that the Cylons may have other Colonial ships in their possession.

Notes
*According to an interview with executive producer David Eick, episodes 5 and 6 are a two-part story in which Galactica discovers a dying Cylon Baseship, and deals with a plague that has befallen the Cylons. (Eick is counting "Occupation" and "Precipice" as one episode.)
*The phrase "end of line," uttered by the Cylon hybrid in this episode, is a possible reference to the film Tron, in which the Master Control Program finishes its sentences with "end of line."
**This may also be a play on the episode title. Torn is an anagram of Tron.
**End of line is also a computing term, referring to the character used to signal a new line in text-based protocols.
* In the PC game Homeworld, Karan S'jet, a young female neuroscientist, integrates her physical body into the Mothership to serve as its living CPU. This is similar to the function of the Cylon hybrid. (Although S'jet chose to do so voluntarily, and it is unlikely, from comments by Three, that the Cylon hybrids were given a choice.) The backstory to the game's sequel Homeworld 2 descibes S'jet as undergoing a simmilar metaphysical experience while integrated with the Mothership as Caprica-Six describes of the hybrid.

Noteworthy Dialogue
Adama's feelings towards, and regarding, Starbuck:

Adama: You were like a daughter to me once - no more. You're malcontent and a cancer, and I won't have you on my ship. So you have a choice - you can figure out how to become a human being again, and an officer; or you can find another place to live, off of this ship. You're dismissed.

The Hybrid's objection to leaving the infected Basestar behind:

Hybrid: Mists of dreams drip along the nascent echo, and love no more. End of line.

Yeah I saw this last week but I didn't know how to categorize this; I mean the comic's name is just "Battlestar Galactica"? NOTE: the writers of the comic talked with RDM. I don't think that makes it canonical, but it should be fairly in keeping with the theme of the series without getting outlandish, like other comic book versions of Trek and Wars.--The Merovingian (C - E)
:Rofl the cover art looks great. Baltar looks totally kick ass! --Mercifull 04:12, 8 April 2006 (CDT)

I have to dig around to find the original interview, but I can assure you that Kuralyov's summary is correct, I read the same interview article and that's exactly what it said. --The Merovingian (C - E) 18:50, 14 April 2006 (CDT)

:There's actually at least two covers. I have a second with Six on the cover, but same content.

:I'm for creating a comic continuity for these, noting that the events are based on the RDM continuity but are of a different continuity. This prevents us from mixing what contradictions or "non-events" occur between the shows. Obviously if a major character of the past reappeared, our characters should have been gravely affected, but then, the TV continuity character may not. They have a place, but we need to make a distinction. --Spencerian 13:36, 3 June 2006 (CDT)

::So does this mean we would need separate pages for Zak Adama and Timeline (RDM) to include comics continuity information? Would separate sections within the main page be enough? --Peter Farago 14:56, 3 June 2006 (CDT)

:::I think that making separate subsections in an article is a mistake, as is making a separate timeline. It's a comic book. STar trek has dozens and Memory Alpha does not include such info outside of the comic book article. We don't need to include them into our projects when their canonicity is dubious: we don't include info from the video game. --The Merovingian (C - E)

::::We don't include (much) information from the Video Game because few people have contributed anything. Our purpose is to be an encyclopedia for all things BSG. I don't think it's our place to make quality distinctions here - we could argue against documenting Galactica 1980 on the same grounds. I say that as long as it has an official license, it's fair game. --Peter Farago 20:13, 4 June 2006 (CDT)

:::::Right. I'm just saying Galactica 1980 and RIC stuff don't get mixed. Current warning on top of this page seems adequate. --The Merovingian (C - E) 21:06, 4 June 2006 (CDT)

Looks like someone's used the episode template already. Good. I'm going to add the usual sections that would appear in an episode so we can add the fun chatter and commentary. --Spencerian 18:02, 4 June 2006 (CDT)

I received my copy today (just to have it). Inexplicably and unexpectly, the story really caught my interest. Can't wait for the next. --gougef 19:25, 9 June 2006 (CDT)

Got mine today too. Was expecting the inconsistencies with the actual franchise to be jarring, but I actually found it quite absorbing. The characterisation seemed very well observed and if the story weren't so contrived it'd actually fit right in as an episode. Plus it was only 20 pence. --Pearse 14:28, 16 June 2006 (CDT)

Canonicity
Merv, I think that you nailed it. --FrankieG 20:25, 27 June 2006 (CDT)
:I tried to tone it down, and I did not want to "decide" such matters for myself...then again the "non canon" tag was already on it and we already had a discussion. Er, in private, what I FEEL like saying is:

::"These guys keep hyping themselves as "in the same continuity", when in fact all they did was let RDM do a brief once over of the story to see that it wasn't horrifically wrong, that they weren't planning on killing off Starbuck or even Cally or Tyrol without permission as the writers have their own plans for recurring characters, but other than making sure that Colonial One doesn't blow up and Tyrol doesn't die, based on interviews I've heard about how much "input" RDM had on this and Bradley Thompson's statements to us that they just look it over to make sure they're not stepping on the tv series TOO much, this comic book plays the characters, ships, technology, continuity, and themes of the Re-Imagined Series FAST AND LOOSE, and NO it is BLATANTLY NOT "in synch" with the show, despite how much publicity you're trying to make for it!"

:There. I said it.
:Anyway, I only really bought the frakking thing for the artwork (which ain't that good, but has its moments) to see what the characters look like. So far they're just introducing main characters, so they haven't gotten to like Helo or Cally or Tyrol yet. I mean for a frakking quarter, the price was right. But it's not worth the gas money to go out and buy just that, think about it. Pick it up if you're buying a BSG Titanium Series toy or something (note: The Titanium Series Cylon Raiders stink; by the Gods, they're purple. Not Chrome, they made them purple. I'm not buying that.). --The Merovingian (C - E) 21:24, 27 June 2006 (CDT)

:Agreed. Well stated, Merv. --Peter Farago 22:26, 27 June 2006 (CDT)

::At a quarter each, I got both covers. Having read through one of my copies, I can only agree with this judgement of its canonicity (and, for that matter, artwork). --CalculatinAvatar(C-T) 01:44, 28 June 2006 (CDT)

:::I like the story, but I look at it like "Battlestar Galactica on Mescaline" :D --FrankieG 06:53, 28 June 2006 (CDT)
