*Research Station Omega – a Picon Colony Science Station, it was an attempt to study the interactions of human settlers and modified, semi-sentient Cylons (courtesy of independent neural pathways) about 5 years before the Cylon War. It was later forgotten and abandoned by Picon following the outbreak of war with the Cylons. By the time the Free Cruiser Lightning and the Battlestar Galactica came across Omega, it was 25 years after the Cylon War. Only one of the original researchers and three adult survivors (children when the station was abandoned) remained, along with 97 Cylon 'Companions'. Following an encounter with the Dreadnaught Invincible, the station was abandoned by the companions for parts unknown and the human survivors returned to the Colonies.

*Bifrost - This is the ship of the Midguardians and contains their entire population including any refugees that choose to seek sanctuary with them.

====New Groups====
*The Midguardians - This religious sect is considered heretics by the majority of the colonies. Their religion (and accompanying gods) are all based around Norse mythology. The book of Edda contains their prophecies and teachings, but it was stricken from the Sacred Scrolls due to it's heretical teachings. The group numbered around 500 when the Colonies were attacked and the entire population escaped aboard the Bifrost to join the rest of the Fleet. Prior to the attack, the Midguardians lived exclusively on Sagittaron where they kept themselves seperate from te rest of the planet's population. Their isolationist attitude ended when they were inspired by the bold actions of Tom Zarek, and they continued seeking fair treatment on their home colony until the attack.

Lt. '''Margaret "Racetrack" Edmondson''' is a female [[Raptor]] pilot aboard [[battlestar]] ''[[Galactica]]''. She harbors a deep hatred of the Cylons, almost certainly because of the loss of loved ones during the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies]]. In her job she is competent and trusted, although she is willing to put her personal beliefs above duty. Racetrack tends to have a dark, fairly cynical attitude after the Cylon attack.

== Biography ==
Racetrack accompanies [[Sharon Valerii (Galactica copy)|Sharon "Boomer" Valerii]] on a mission to destroy a Cylon [[Basestar (RDM)|basestar]]. She witnesses Boomer's attempted assassination of [[William Adama]] in ''Galactica's'' [[CIC]] ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II]]). Immediately after, she informs the CIC staff that Boomer returned from placing the nuclear warhead inside the basestar orbiting [[Kobol]] without her helmet on and that she probably gave away ''Galactica's'' position to the Cylons ([[Scattered]]).

Racetrack pilots the Raptor carrying [[Lee Adama]]'s [[SAR]] mission to Kobol, encountering fire from Cylon anti-aircraft missiles. [[Galen Tyrol]] fells the missiles' [[DRADIS]] dish on the surface, and they fail to lock on. Racetrack's Raptor then destroys the [[Cylon Centurian|Centurians]] on the ground with a volley of missles, and recovers the trapped ''Galactica'' crewmen ([[Fragged]]).

Racetrack aids the escape of President [[Laura Roslin]] from the [[brig]] by falsely claiming that her [[Raptor]] was having technical problems, enabling the furloughed Lee Adama to report to the hangar bay instead of the brig per his arrest. She then helps prep the Raptor used as the escape craft for launch, but remains on ''Galactica'' ([[Resistance (episode)|Resistance]]). On Boomer's death, Edmondson becomes the only person in the Fleet who has seen the inside of a basestar.

Racetrack serves as ECO on [[Raptor 1]], plotting the best point of orbital entry when taking Commander Adama to [[Kobol]] to find and meet with President Roslin ([[Home, Part II]]). Since then, Margaret flies basic supply runs between ''Galactica'' and [[The Fleet (RDM)|the fleet]]. She continues to light candles for fallen comrades in the Cylon attack. She is almost certain she will eventually die on a mission, and is more focused on taking out as many Cylons as she can before that happens ([[Final Cut]]).

Racetrack, along with many other pilots, intially snubs [[Karl Agathon|Helo]] upon his return because of his romantic relationship with the Caprica-originated copy of Sharon Valerii. After she insults [[Kara Thrace]] over the matter, Starbuck pushes Racetrack face-first into a card table ([[Flight of the Phoenix]]). Racetrack later congratulates Helo on his help with the [[Blackbird]], whose [[DRADIS]]-absorbing carbon composites Helo suggested, which serves as a quiet apology for her earlier rudeness.

Racetrack is particularly overjoyed when ''Galactica'' encounters the [[Mercury class battlestar|advanced battlestar]] ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]''. While socializing with ''Pegasus'' pilots in the hangar bay, she fails to understand Starbuck's contempt for the "scorecards" on which they tally their kills ([[Pegasus (episode)|Pegasus]]). Racetrack's raptor rescues the unconscious Apollo during the [[Battle of the Resurrection Ship]], and she revives him using defibrilator paddles in her emergency gear ([[Resurrection Ship, Part II]]). When Racetrack transports Apollo and a squad of Marines to check the ''[[Daru Mozu]]'' for signs of sabotage by Cylon sympathizers, her vessel narrowly escapes the ensuing explosion ([[Epiphanies]]). Racetrack also later flew a Raptor transporting Apollo back from [[Cloud 9]] after he spent some off duty time there with [[Shevon]] ([[Black Market]]).

Racetrack is flying a Raptor as part of Starbuck's rescue mission plan to send 20 Raptors back to Caprica to pick up survivors, by making a series of ten FTL Jumps. On the first Jump, Racetrack's Raptor jumps to the wrong coordinates, ending up in a gas cloud. Starbuck and the main group proceed on without her. Preparing to return to ''Galactica'', Racetrack picks up a lot of gravity distortions on her sensors and upon clearing the gas cloud Racetrack discovers an inhabitable planet that the Fleet could colonize ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I]]). Though the planet turned out to be marginally habitable at best, it would later be named [[New Caprica]], and most of the human survivors of the fleet would settle down there permanently ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]). The discovery of [[New Caprica]] by the Cylons approximately a year after settlement will no doubt have some effect upon the permanence of the human settlement there. It is not currently known whether Racetrack herself settled on [[New Caprica]] (as many military personnel appear to have done), or whether she remained with the fleet and jumped away when the Cylons arrived ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]).

In the Season Premiere, it is revealed that Racetrack remained with the fleet and is currently serving as a Raptor pilot, notably leading missions to detect and communications from the NEw Caprica resistance. ([[Occupation]])

*Racetrack was probably created as a replacement for [[Crashdown]] and his role as ECO of the Raptor a given episode focuses on (as Crashdown himself was created as a replacement for [[Karl Agathon|Helo]] after he was stranded). Racetrack was introduced in the first season finale and the seeds of Crashdown's demise - signs of his incompetence for command while stranded on Kobol - were already planted in that episode.
*Racetrack's name was revealed in the episode "[[Final Cut]]". Her name was misspelled in the caption during her interview, however, as noted by [[Bradley Thompson]] (See [[Sources:Margaret Edmondson]]). Confusion about her name's spelling resulted in Racetrack's last name being mispelled in the end credits of many episodes in Season 2, although this will be corrected in Season 3.
*Ron Moore noted in his [[podcast]] of Racetrack's debut episode "[[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II]]" that she was only meant to be a one-shot character, like [[Karl Agathon|Helo]]. But, just as with [[Tahmoh Penikett]]'s performance in the [[Miniseries]], the production staff and the powers that be were so impressed with actress Leah Cairns' performance in the episode that they decided to keep her on as a new recurring character.
*A fan of [[Karl Agathon|Helo]], "[[User:Sabaceanbabe|Sabaceanbabe]]", once wrote a short fanfiction romance scene between Helo and Racetrack (located [http://sabaceanbabe.livejournal.com/38792.html here], scroll down to part 5). [[Tahmoh Penikett]], who plays Helo, and actress Leah Cairns read it at a party, and Cairns decided that she'd work that into the character. While not canonical or acknolwedged by the writers, Cairns said in an [http://podcasts.lvrocks.com/details.aspx?castid=5 interview] on June 27th, 2006 that she chose to incorporate this into her character backstory and how she plays scenes with Helo, that she is actually wildly attracted to him and jealous of [[Sharon Valerii (Caprica copy)|Caprica-Sharon]]. Although Caprica-Sharon isn't supposed to know about this, Penikett reacts with this underlying tension in his scenes with her.

As of the [[Miniseries]], Starbuck informs Cmdr. [[William Adama]] that "there are 20 of us climbing the walls down in the Ready Room". This is excluding the 20 members of Ripper's wing already sortied, and Apollo, on escort detail, and probably doesn't include ECOs. Also in the miniseries, three Mark VII Vipers are seen in formation inside ''[[Colonial One]]'s'' ragtag caravan before they rendezvous with ''Galactica''. These could have been left behind with the non-FTL capable ships, or could have been carried to [[Ragnar]] in other ships as was Apollo's Viper.

After the accident in "[[Act of Contrition]]," Capt. Adama states to Lt. Thrace that there are 21 pilots remaining, by which he probably refers only to the Viper pilots. It is difficult to imagine that Sergeant [[Hadrian]] made the same distinction when she referred to the 13 killed and 7 injured in the incident, since the most notable victim was actually a Raptor, not a Viper pilot. Of the 11 present for funeral services, at least one ([[Crashdown]]) and possibly two (unidentified #4?) are known to be ECOs. [[Racetrack]] and the fourth ECO are clearly not present. Another one ("Boomer" Valerii) and possibly two (unidentified #5 or #7?) are known to be Raptor pilots. This leaves 7 to 9 Viper pilots depicted in this scene. Adding the 7 injured pilots, we have a total of 14 to 16 Viper pilots accounted for, implying that 5 to 7 surviving and uninjured pilots are not present for some reason (perhaps on [[Combat Air Patrol]] or other duty).

Eight nuggets were then recruited to fill out the ranks, including [[Louanne Katraine|Kat]], [[Brendan Constanza|Hot Dog]] and [[Perry|Chuckles]], bringing the total to 29.

In "[[The Hand of God (RDM)|The Hand of God]]," Starbuck is seen giving combat flight training to an expanded class of 14 [[nugget]]s. Although not specifically discussed in this episode, it can only assumed that they have enlisted 6 more candidates from the civilian Fleet, probably from the "next group" that, according to Apollo, had "never even been in a cockpit" at the time of "[[Act of Contrition]]." Later in this episode, a total of 19 Vipers and 2 Raptors are deployed. (Starbuck is inactive at this time due to her [[You Can't Go Home Again|knee injury]].) [[Fireball]], [[Perry|Chuckles]], [[Stepchild]] and one unidentified pilot are killed in action, leaving ''Galactica'' with 31 Viper pilots. (According to scifi.com, three nuggets are killed and four Vipers destroyed in this episode, so we must assume that [[Stepchild]] and the unidentified death were among their number.)

In "[[Scattered]]," ''Galactica'' fields 18 Vipers. If no other pilots than [[Flyboy]] were killed in "[[Valley of Darkness]]," then with [[Joe Palladino]] in the brig, and with [[Louanne Katraine]] on medical leave, ''Galactica'' had at most 28 pilots available for duty by the end of the episode "[[Final Cut]]."

However, in the next episode, "[[Flight of the Phoenix]]," 42 Vipers are sortied -- not only more pilots, but also more planes than ''Galactica'' should have actually available. The most reasonable conclusion is that this is simply an effects gaffe. But if this is taken literally as an increase in their ranks, then ''Galactica'' may have inducted more than 6 extra nuggets into the squadron since "[[Act of Contrition]]," and may be continuing to recruit despite Kat's assertion in "[[Final Cut]]" that "there are no replacements coming up."

After encountering fellow battlestar ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]'', ''Galactica'' finally received a number of transfers to fill her depleted ranks. It's unlikely that any ''Pegasus'' crewmen were actually deployed against their compatriots at the climax of the episode. So, with Kat reinstated to flight status, but minus Apollo and Starbuck (transferred to ''Pegasus''), ''Galactica'' can muster 27 Vipers against ''Pegasus''. However, only 15 of ''Galactica's'' Mk. II Vipers can be clearly seen as the episode ends.

As of the episode "[[Scar]]," the Fleet has begun training many new nugget pilots in earnest (with flight simulators aboard the more-advanced ''Pegasus''), and will obtain enough metal ore from asteroid mining to construct 2 entire squadrons of Vipers on ''Pegasus'' (this battlestar has Viper production facilities that ''Galactica'' does not). Lt. '''Margaret "Racetrack" Edmondson''' is a female [[Raptor]] pilot aboard [[battlestar]] ''[[Galactica]]''. She harbors a deep hatred of the Cylons, almost certainly because of the loss of loved ones during the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies]]. In her job she is competent and trusted, although she is willing to put her personal beliefs above duty. Racetrack tends to have a dark, fairly cynical attitude after the Cylon attack.

== Biography ==
Racetrack accompanies [[Sharon Valerii (Galactica copy)|Sharon "Boomer" Valerii]] on a mission to destroy a Cylon [[Basestar (RDM)|basestar]]. She witnesses Boomer's attempted assassination of [[William Adama]] in ''Galactica's'' [[CIC]] ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II]]). Immediately after, she informs the CIC staff that Boomer returned from placing the nuclear warhead inside the basestar orbiting [[Kobol]] without her helmet on and that she probably gave away ''Galactica's'' position to the Cylons ([[Scattered]]).

Racetrack pilots the Raptor carrying [[Lee Adama]]'s [[SAR]] mission to Kobol, encountering fire from Cylon anti-aircraft missiles. [[Galen Tyrol]] fells the missiles' [[DRADIS]] dish on the surface, and they fail to lock on. Racetrack's Raptor then destroys the [[Cylon Centurian|Centurians]] on the ground with a volley of missles, and recovers the trapped ''Galactica'' crewmen ([[Fragged]]).

Racetrack aids the escape of President [[Laura Roslin]] from the [[brig]] by falsely claiming that her [[Raptor]] was having technical problems, enabling the furloughed Lee Adama to report to the hangar bay instead of the brig per his arrest. She then helps prep the Raptor used as the escape craft for launch, but remains on ''Galactica'' ([[Resistance (episode)|Resistance]]). On Boomer's death, Edmondson becomes the only person in the Fleet who has seen the inside of a basestar.

Racetrack serves as ECO on [[Raptor 1]], plotting the best point of orbital entry when taking Commander Adama to [[Kobol]] to find and meet with President Roslin ([[Home, Part II]]). Since then, Margaret flies basic supply runs between ''Galactica'' and [[The Fleet (RDM)|the fleet]]. She continues to light candles for fallen comrades in the Cylon attack. She is almost certain she will eventually die on a mission, and is more focused on taking out as many Cylons as she can before that happens ([[Final Cut]]).

Racetrack, along with many other pilots, intially snubs [[Karl Agathon|Helo]] upon his return because of his romantic relationship with the Caprica-originated copy of Sharon Valerii. After she insults [[Kara Thrace]] over the matter, Starbuck pushes Racetrack face-first into a card table ([[Flight of the Phoenix]]). Racetrack later congratulates Helo on his help with the [[Blackbird]], whose [[DRADIS]]-absorbing carbon composites Helo suggested, which serves as a quiet apology for her earlier rudeness.

Racetrack is particularly overjoyed when ''Galactica'' encounters the [[Mercury class battlestar|advanced battlestar]] ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]''. While socializing with ''Pegasus'' pilots in the hangar bay, she fails to understand Starbuck's contempt for the "scorecards" on which they tally their kills ([[Pegasus (episode)|Pegasus]]). Racetrack's raptor rescues the unconscious Apollo during the [[Battle of the Resurrection Ship]], and she revives him using defibrilator paddles in her emergency gear ([[Resurrection Ship, Part II]]). When Racetrack transports Apollo and a squad of Marines to check the ''[[Daru Mozu]]'' for signs of sabotage by Cylon sympathizers, her vessel narrowly escapes the ensuing explosion ([[Epiphanies]]). Racetrack also later flew a Raptor transporting Apollo back from [[Cloud 9]] after he spent some off duty time there with [[Shevon]] ([[Black Market]]).

Racetrack is flying a Raptor as part of Starbuck's rescue mission plan to send 20 Raptors back to Caprica to pick up survivors, by making a series of ten FTL Jumps. On the first Jump, Racetrack's Raptor jumps to the wrong coordinates, ending up in a gas cloud. Starbuck and the main group proceed on without her. Preparing to return to ''Galactica'', Racetrack picks up a lot of gravity distortions on her sensors and upon clearing the gas cloud Racetrack discovers an inhabitable planet that the Fleet could colonize ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I]]). Though the planet turned out to be marginally habitable at best, it would later be named [[New Caprica]], and most of the human survivors of the fleet would settle down there permanently ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]). The discovery of [[New Caprica]] by the Cylons approximately a year after settlement will no doubt have some effect upon the permanence of the human settlement there. It is not currently known whether Racetrack herself settled on [[New Caprica]] (as many military personnel appear to have done), or whether she remained with the fleet and jumped away when the Cylons arrived ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]).

In the Season Premiere, it is revealed that Racetrack remained with the fleet and is currently serving as a Raptor pilot, notably leading missions to detect and communications from the NEw Caprica resistance. ([[Exodus, Part I]])

However, the number of possible pilots was clearly exceeded in the episode "Flight of the Phoenix", which seems to indicate that the showrunners are no longer keeping track. Furthermore, the episode "Pegasus" is scheduled to introduce several new pilots, which will probably make this even more difficult and fruitless to keep track of. I see two options here:

*Note that the list covers the events of the Mini-series through "Final Cut" and leave it as a reference to those episodes.
*Reformat to include Pegasus characters but keep track of them separately, using the following outline structure:

I think the actual "numbers" section should be divided into pre- and post-Pegasus. I'd like to add something to the pilot number for Act of Contrition when Apollo is talking to Starbuck about washing out the nuggets. I got the idea that when Apollo said he only had 21 pilots for 40 Vipers, he meant he 'currently' only had 21. The 21 wouldn't include the 7 pilots (Raptor or Viper) that were injured and sent to sickbay. These extra 7 pilots could all be Viper pilots or suviving Raptor pilots, we don't really know, but I think this is worth mentioning. It could account for extra pilots in the rest of the series. Here's some updated information for Lieutenant Emmit from Home (1). This is from the closing credits of the episode. Her character's full name is listed as 'Lt. Emmitt "Sweetness" Jones'. This corresponds to the barely visible 'Uster' seen under the pilot during the dogfight scene. I guess that "Freaker" is a pilot cut from the episode because I don't remember any other pilots other than the Galactica regulars, Stinger, and Kat. I'll move Firelli to the Viper list and replace Buster on the Pegasus list.

As of the [[Miniseries]], Starbuck informs Cmdr. [[William Adama]] that "there are 20 of us climbing the walls down in the Ready Room". This is excluding the 20 members of Ripper's wing already sortied, and Apollo, on escort detail, and probably doesn't include ECOs. Also in the miniseries, three Mark VII Vipers are seen in formation inside ''[[Colonial One]]'s'' ragtag caravan before they rendezvous with ''Galactica''. Although not specifically discussed in this episode, it can only assumed that they have enlisted 6 more candidates from the civilian Fleet, probably from the "next group" that, according to Apollo, had "never even been in a cockpit" at the time of "[[Act of Contrition]]." Later, during a patrol of the [[Big Spud]], Duck unsuccessfully calls [[Brent Baxton|BB]] to retreat when their patrol's fuel is too low. BB, a [[nugget]], ignores orders and engages a group of Raiders with fatal results ([[Scar]]).

In "[[The Captain's Hand]]" he tries to enter the [[Pilots Duty Locker|pilots' duty locker]] several times, but [[Lee Adama]] and [[Anastasia Dualla]] have locked it after spending the night together there.

At the time of the settling of [[New Caprica]], Duck is an ace several times over with forty confirmed kills. His significant other is a woman called [[Nora]], and they want to have a child. He was later approached by his friends, [[Galen Tyrol]] and [[Jammer]], in an attempt to recruit him into [[New Caprica Resistance|their resistance efforts]], but declined due to his plans with Nora. He was also a smoker, but quit due to the aforementioned plans ([[Battlestar Galactica: The Resistance|The Resistance]]).

Following Nora's death in the New Caprica Temple, Duck was clearly upset at the revelation that the Resistance was hiding weapons there.

After a brief period of mourning, he relents and agrees to join the New Caprica Resistance by infiltrating the New Caprica Police and keeping an eye on the Cylons.

Lt. '''Tucker "Duck" Clellan''' is present for the card game at the beginning of "[[Flight of the Phoenix]]" and later participates in the [[Great Cylon Turkey Shoot|massacre of the disabled Cylon raiders]].

According to [[Louanne Katraine|Kat]], he is one of the best pilots that ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]'' still has. Clellan helps put [[Reilly]]'s things away after he's killed by Scar ([[Scar]]).
Later, during a patrol of the [[Big Spud]], Duck unsuccessfully calls [[Brent Baxton|BB]] to retreat when their patrol's fuel is too low. BB, a [[nugget]], ignores orders and engages a group of Raiders with fatal results ([[Scar]]).

In "[[The Captain's Hand]]" he tries to enter the [[Pilots Duty Locker|pilots' duty locker]] several times, but [[Lee Adama]] and [[Anastasia Dualla]] have locked it after spending the night together there.

At the time of the settling of [[New Caprica]], Duck is an ace several times over with forty confirmed kills. His significant other is a woman called [[Nora]], and they want to have a child. He was later approached by his friends, [[Galen Tyrol]] and [[Jammer]], in an attempt to recruit him into [[New Caprica Resistance|their resistance efforts]], but declined due to his plans with Nora. He was also a smoker, but quit due to the aforementioned plans ([[Battlestar Galactica: The Resistance|The Resistance]]).

Following Nora's death in the New Caprica Temple, Duck was clearly upset at the revelation that the Resistance was hiding weapons there.

After a brief period of morning, he relents and agrees to join the New Caprica Resistance by infiltrating the New Caprica Police and keeping an eye on the Cylons.

I know of no evidence in the show that supports the following statement:

As far as the scenes actually broadcast in the show are concerned, Baltar makes his decision to run for the presidency entirely on his own, probably on the spur of the moment at Roslin's press conference, and never with any prior consultation with Zarek. It is not the case that Zarek "manages to talk" Baltar into "running in his place..." The above statement imagines more contrivance on Zarek's part than is supported by the facts.--Elach

No, you are wrong. I have reviewed the scenes in question and there is no indication that Zarek has convinced Baltar to run at the end of their scene together in The Captain's Hand. It is ambiguous, at the very least. Zarek may have opened his eyes to the possibility of running and winning, but there is no definitive indication that Baltar WILL INDEED run at the end of their conversation together. You are making unwarranted assumptions. I could just as easily argue that Six convinced Baltar to run since her image appears to him at the exact moment he appears to decide to make the announcement of his candidacy. She has many times previously pushed him to ascend to the presidency, and that interpretation is equally logical and supportable. As of the [[Miniseries]], Starbuck informs Cmdr. [[William Adama]] that "there are 20 of us climbing the walls down in the Ready Room". This is excluding the 20 members of Ripper's wing already sortied, and Apollo, on escort detail, and probably doesn't include ECOs. Also in the miniseries, three Mark VII Vipers are seen in formation inside ''[[Colonial One]]'s'' ragtag caravan before they rendezvous with ''Galactica''. These could have been left behind with the non-FTL capable ships, or could have been carried to [[Ragnar]] in other ships as was Apollo's Viper.

After the accident in "[[Act of Contrition]]," Capt. Adama states to Lt. Thrace that there are 21 pilots remaining, by which he probably refers only to the Viper pilots. It is difficult to imagine that Sergeant [[Hadrian]] made the same distinction when she referred to the 13 killed and 7 injured in the incident, since the most notable victim was actually a Raptor, not a Viper pilot. Of the 11 present for funeral services, at least one ([[Crashdown]]) and possibly two (unidentified #4?) are known to be ECOs. [[Racetrack]] and the fourth ECO are clearly not present. Another one ("Boomer" Valerii) and possibly two (unidentified #5 or #7?) are known to be Raptor pilots. This leaves 7 to 9 Viper pilots depicted in this scene. Adding the 7 injured pilots, we have a total of 14 to 16 Viper pilots accounted for, implying that 5 to 7 surviving and uninjured pilots are not present for some reason (perhaps on [[Combat Air Patrol]] or other duty).

Eight nuggets were then recruited to fill out the ranks, including [[Louanne Katraine|Kat]], [[Brendan Constanza|Hot Dog]] and [[Perry|Chuckles]], bringing the total to 29.

In "[[The Hand of God (RDM)|The Hand of God]]," Starbuck is seen giving combat flight training to an expanded class of 14 [[nugget]]s. Although not specifically discussed in this episode, it can only assumed that they have enlisted 6 more candidates from the civilian Fleet, probably from the "next group" that, according to Apollo, had "never even been in a cockpit" at the time of "[[Act of Contrition]]." Later in this episode, a total of 19 Vipers and 2 Raptors are deployed. (Starbuck is inactive at this time due to her [[You Can't Go Home Again|knee injury]].) [[Fireball]], [[Perry|Chuckles]], [[Stepchild]] and one unidentified pilot are killed in action, leaving ''Galactica'' with 31 Viper pilots. (According to scifi.com, three nuggets are killed and four Vipers destroyed in this episode, so we must assume that [[Stepchild]] and the unidentified death were among their number.)

In "[[Scattered]]," ''Galactica'' fields 18 Vipers. If no other pilots than [[Flyboy]] were killed in "[[Valley of Darkness]]," then with [[Joe Palladino]] in the brig, and with [[Louanne Katraine]] on medical leave, ''Galactica'' had at most 28 pilots available for duty by the end of the episode "[[Final Cut]]."

However, in the next episode, "[[Flight of the Phoenix]]," 42 Vipers are sortied -- not only more pilots, but also more planes than ''Galactica'' should have actually available. The most reasonable conclusion is that this is simply an effects gaffe. But if this is taken literally as an increase in their ranks, then ''Galactica'' may have inducted more than 6 extra nuggets into the squadron since "[[Act of Contrition]]," and may be continuing to recruit despite Kat's assertion in "[[Final Cut]]" that "there are no replacements coming up."

After encountering fellow battlestar ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]'', ''Galactica'' finally received a number of transfers to fill her depleted ranks. It's unlikely that any ''Pegasus'' crewmen were actually deployed against their compatriots at the climax of the episode. So, with Kat reinstated to flight status, but minus Apollo and Starbuck (transferred to ''Pegasus''), ''Galactica'' can muster 27 Vipers against ''Pegasus''. However, only 15 of ''Galactica's'' Mk. II Vipers can be clearly seen as the episode ends.

As of the episode "[[Scar]]," the Fleet has begun training many new nugget pilots in earnest (with flight simulators aboard the more-advanced ''Pegasus''), and will obtain enough metal ore from asteroid mining to construct 2 entire squadrons of Vipers on ''Pegasus'' (this battlestar has Viper production facilities that ''Galactica'' does not). Following "Scar", it will be more difficult to determine the exact number of Viper pilots (by subtracting the dead from pre-existing numbers) because their numbers are decisively growing.

'''Peter Laird''' is a civilian aeronautical engineer. When the [[Cylon Attack]] began, he was aboard the ''[[Scylla]]'', a civilian ship, when its passengers were "picked up" by the [[battlestar]] ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]''. He became the ship's Flight-Deck Chief despite not being part of the Colonial military. When he came aboard ''[[Galactica]]'', he met his counterpart, [[Galen Tyrol|Chief Tyrol]]. Upon looking on the [[Blackbird]], Tyrol's new stealth fighter, he was both appalled and impressed, especially because he designed the old [[DDG-62]] engines used in the Blackbird ([[Pegasus (episode)|Pegasus]]).

Laird was assigned to ''Galactica'' during Admiral Cain's fleet integration and according to the the [[Pegasus (Extended Version)|Extended "Pegasus" Cut]] replaced [[Chief Tyrol]] as deck chief even before he was charged with Lt. [[Thorne|Thorne's]] murder. Also shown in the extended episode, he made a suggestion to the Galactica deck crew that increased fuel efficiency by two percent.

While drinking with Col. [[Saul Tigh|Tigh]], ''Pegasus''' XO [[Jack Fisk]] revealed that the ''Scylla'' was part of a civilian fleet that ''Pegasus'' encountered a few weeks after escaping the Cylon attack. Admiral Cain, with military priority on the mind, ordered that civilian ships be scavanged for anything that would be of aid to ''Pegasus'' militarily. Supplies, weapons and even people with potentially useful skills were taken.

Laird, whose background in aeronautics served Cain's plan well, was selected by Cain to be drafted into her crew along with 14 other people on board. However, all 15 of them were traveling with their families, and resisted Cain's attempt to draft them. In response, Cain had two of the families executed to cow the civilians, and Laird was taken aboard ''Pegasus''. It is unclear if Laird's family was one of the two that Cain had executed, but if not, she still marooned them onboard the ''Scylla'' without an FTL drive (which left them at the mercy of the Cylons or the desert of space), making her ultimately responsible for their likely deaths.

Laird is having difficulty in managing the hangar deck as Tyrol's substitute and lacks military decorum, but assures Commander Adama that all ships will be ready for "the [[Attack on the Resurrection Ship|attack thing]]" ([[Resurrection Ship, Part I]]).

After Admiral Cain's death her crew transfers were reverted and Tyrol was re-installed as ''Galactica'''s deck chief. Laird has more-than-likely returned to his previous post as the ''Pegasus'' deck chief. (Post [[Resurrection Ship, Part II]])

As of the [[Miniseries]], Starbuck informs Cmdr. [[William Adama]] that "there are 20 of us climbing the walls down in the Ready Room". This is excluding the 20 members of Ripper's wing already sortied, and Apollo, on escort detail, and probably doesn't include ECOs. Also in the miniseries, three Mark VII Vipers are seen in formation inside ''[[Colonial One]]'s'' ragtag caravan before they rendezvous with ''Galactica''. These could have been left behind with the non-FTL capable ships, or could have been carried to [[Ragnar]] in other ships as was Apollo's Viper.

After the accident in "[[Act of Contrition]]," Capt. Adama states to Lt. Thrace that there are 21 pilots remaining, by which he probably refers only to the Viper pilots. It is difficult to imagine that Sergeant [[Hadrian]] made the same distinction when she referred to the 13 killed and 7 injured in the incident, since the most notable victim was actually a Raptor, not a Viper pilot. Of the 11 present for funeral services, at least one ([[Crashdown]]) and possibly two (unidentified #4?) are known to be ECOs. [[Racetrack]] and the fourth ECO are clearly not present. Another one ("Boomer" Valerii) and possibly two (unidentified #5 or #7?) are known to be Raptor pilots. This leaves 7 to 9 Viper pilots depicted in this scene. Adding the 7 injured pilots, we have a total of 14 to 16 Viper pilots accounted for, implying that 5 to 7 surviving and uninjured pilots are not present for some reason (perhaps on [[Combat Air Patrol]] or other duty).

Eight nuggets were then recruited to fill out the ranks, including [[Louanne Katraine|Kat]], [[Brendan Constanza|Hot Dog]] and [[Perry|Chuckles]], bringing the total to 29.

In "[[The Hand of God (RDM)|The Hand of God]]," Starbuck is seen giving combat flight training to an expanded class of 14 [[nugget]]s. Although not specifically discussed in this episode, it can only assumed that they have enlisted 6 more candidates from the civilian Fleet, probably from the "next group" that, according to Apollo, had "never even been in a cockpit" at the time of "[[Act of Contrition]]." Later in this episode, a total of 19 Vipers and 2 Raptors are deployed. (Starbuck is inactive at this time due to her [[You Can't Go Home Again|knee injury]].) [[Fireball]], [[Perry|Chuckles]], [[Stepchild]] and one unidentified pilot are killed in action, leaving ''Galactica'' with 31 Viper pilots. (According to scifi.com, three nuggets are killed and four Vipers destroyed in this episode, so we must assume that [[Stepchild]] and the unidentified death were among their number.)

In "[[Scattered]]," ''Galactica'' fields 18 Vipers. If no other pilots than [[Flyboy]] were killed in "[[Valley of Darkness]]," then with [[Joe Palladino]] in the brig, and with [[Louanne Katraine]] on medical leave, ''Galactica'' had at most 28 pilots available for duty by the end of the episode "[[Final Cut]]."

However, in the next episode, "[[Flight of the Phoenix]]," 42 Vipers are sortied -- not only more pilots, but also more planes than ''Galactica'' should have actually available. The most reasonable conclusion is that this is simply an effects gaffe. But if this is taken literally as an increase in their ranks, then ''Galactica'' may have inducted more than 6 extra nuggets into the squadron since "[[Act of Contrition]]," and may be continuing to recruit despite Kat's assertion in "[[Final Cut]]" that "there are no replacements coming up."

After encountering fellow battlestar ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]'', ''Galactica'' finally received a number of transfers to fill her depleted ranks. It's unlikely that any ''Pegasus'' crewmen were actually deployed against their compatriots at the climax of the episode. So, with Kat reinstated to flight status, but minus Apollo and Starbuck (transferred to ''Pegasus''), ''Galactica'' can muster 27 Vipers against ''Pegasus''. However, only 15 of ''Galactica's'' Mk. II Vipers can be clearly seen as the episode ends.

As of the episode "[[Scar]]," the Fleet has begun training many new nugget pilots in earnest (with flight simulators aboard the more-advanced ''Pegasus''), and will obtain enough metal ore from asteroid mining to construct 2 entire squadrons of Vipers on ''Pegasus'' (this battlestar has Viper production facilities that ''Galactica'' does not). Neither commanders are willing to order "weapons free" to fire. The Vipers are reduced to playing "chicken", attempting to force each other to fire — or collide.

**Adama could have just had Roslin strip her of her rank because she's Commander-in-Chief; it doesn't matter: Cain's hold over ''Pegasus'' is so tight it would be fluffed off. Also, Cain is ''not'' clinically insane. It's not just "insane" humans who do evil things in wartime. Cain does bad things, and she doesn't have the excuse of not being in command of her mental faculties.
* Has Roslin's illness has brought her to terminally important attitudes on life and death? Unlike the option to kill the prisoners on the ''[[Astral Queen]]'' ([[Miniseries]]), Roslin does not hesitate to suggest to Adama to kill Cain.
**These two issues are not morally equivalent. The prisoners on ''Astral Queen'' were not posing an immediate threat to the safety of the Fleet, as Cain and ''Pegasus'' were.

Could any of the other [[Cylon agent]] models be identified, including the ones that the Fleet aren't aware of yet?
**Although logically possible, from a story writing standpoint they were probably not lucky enough for that.
*Since Lee Adama was ultimately to be included in the mission to assassinate Cain anyway, why didn't his father deign to brief him at the same time as Kara Thrace? Having Thrace fill him in later doubles the chance of their plans being overheard.
**Since Starbuck is the ''Pegasus'' CAG, Adama has an excuse to ask her to stay. If he'd asked for her ''and'' Lee, it likely would have raised suspicions.
*Baltar said that he's tired of the fantasy-world in his head that he retreats into; not of Number Six herself, but of his bachelor pad on Caprica. Is this a further sign that Baltar is shifting closer into the Cylon camp? It could mean that he no longer misses his old life on Caprica and has stopped clinging to it.
*To what extent is the chain of command still in effect? Adama fully intends to have Cain killed, but still stops short of demanding Agathon and Tyrol's return, and Cain believes he will still accept Fisk's transfer to ''Galactica'' as a spy.
*Is Admiral Cain telling the truth when she says to Starbuck that their "ultimate goal" is to return to the [[Twelve Colonies (RDM)|Twelve Colonies]] and liberate them from the Cylons?

**On the other hand, this is consistent with Admiral Cain's behavior so far: while ''Galactica's'' crew realizes they had no hope of taking back the Colonies and left to try to find Earth, ''Pegasus'' has actually been engaging Cylon forces on the outskirts of the occupied Twelve Colonies for months. Cain does truly seem to want to "take the fight to the Cylons", as it were, and fight to reclaim the Twelve Colonies.
***Even if she is being honest about that, her comment to Starbuck that Anders' resistance "deserves to be saved" seems almost definitely just to be Cain manipulating Starbuck: As evidenced by Cain's treatment of her own [[Scylla|small civilian fleet]], she has completely prioritized the military assets of ''Pegasus'' over the well-being of any other small group of people.
***Even if Admiral Cain were able to lead the Fleet in successfully forcing the Cylons out of the Twelve Colonies, doesn't she realize that they've ''already'' been nuked and are currently inhospitably irradiated? The few people left on the Colonies need anti-radiation medication to survive there, there's only a finite supply of these and it's doubtful that they have any production facilities they could use.

== Analysis ==
*Cain wonders if debating morality is what Roslin and Adama have been doing "for the past six months"; however, as explained in the article [[Timeline (RDM)]], this episode only takes place a little over ''three'' months after the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies]]. This is actually the starting point of what ''BattlestarWiki'' refers to as the [[Season two timeline discontinuity]]: all episodes in Season 2.5 have jumped ahead three months in the timeline: while consistent with each other (i.e. "[[Downloaded]]" is supposed to be 9 months after the Cylon attack, and it does take place 3 months after the Cain Trilogy).
*Pilot [[Louanne Katraine]] has apparently recovered from her [[stims]] burnout in "[[Final Cut]]", and has become the lead pilot on ''Galactica'' following the transfer of Lee Adama and Kara Thrace to ''Pegasus''. Given that the ungifted [[George Birch]] was apparently the best to be found within ''Galactica's'' regular chain of command ([[Home, Part I]]), it's unsurprising that a talented nugget has risen to the top.
**In hindsight, her abuse of stims is actually in line with the single-minded zeal she approaches her job with. She has apparently learned to channel her perfectionism into a more constructive outlet.
**In choosing Birch Commander Adama decided to value loyalty way above everything else, Col. Tighs was quite suprised at that. With Adama rebalancing his requirements it's no suprise a better pilot got the position.

*Both Adama and Cain's assassination plans (taking advantage of a victory celebration in [[CIC]]) are exactly the same as the one used by "Boomer" Valerii in "[[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II]]."

*Number Six likes [[pyramid (RDM)|pyramid]]. She went to live games often while she was on Caprica. She said it was because she loved the rush of raw emotions that would sweep over the crowd.
*Thrace still intends to recover Anders' [[Caprica Resistance]] fighters from Caprica. Timeline wise, they have a little over a month of anti-radiation meds left ([[Downloaded|apparently, they're able to get more as time passes]]).

*[[Cally]]'s charged reaction to the drunken Pegasus crewmen ''bragging'' about raping Number Six/Gina repeatedly is probably due to herself being the survivor of an attempted rape, in "[[Bastille Day]]". This disgust with the ''Pegasus'' crew's gang-rape of Gina is interesting in light of the fact that Cally had no compunctions about killing the ''Galactica'' copy of Valerii. Evidently she now acknowledges the Cylons' humanity in at least some measure. Perhaps she's felt a connection between this and her own assault on board ''[[Astral Queen]]'' by [[Mason]] in "[[Bastille Day]]".
**It's also possible that, since her fellow female deck crew also look disgusted and follow her out, women just don't appreciate talk about rape in general. RDM says something to this effect [[Podcast:Pegasus#Act 3|in the podcast]].

Moore stated in his podcast that there were a number of scenes filmed for this episode that had to be deleted for time, but that he expects to be edited back into the episode for the DVD release. According to Moore, although most episode rough cuts run a little overtime and one or two scenes have to be edited out, "Pegasus" had more than a full extra Act worth of material left over. The full episode would have been an hour and 15 minutes long. Moore tried to put in more scenes to push it to 90 minutes, in which case Scifi Channel would air it as a 90 minute special (as they had done in the past for "Stargate Sg-1" on occasion), but ultimately not enough material could be included in "Pegasus" to make it 90 minutes long without detracting from story quality; they were left with an episode that was too short to be a 90 minute special, but also too long to include all filmed scenes in a one hour episode. Deleted scenes, which Moore says will be restored in the DVD released version ("[[Pegasus (Extended Version)]]"), include:

He is later part of the group of ''Pegasus'' alert vipers that are launched in response to Galactica launching her own Vipers. He appears to lead the force, which means he was most likely serving as flight leader while [[CAG]] [[Cole Taylor|Cole "Stinger" Taylor]] was on his Raptor mission.
