:This article discusses the Twelve Colonies of the Re-imagined Series. See The Twelve Colonies (TOS) for information on the Colonies of the Original Series.

Approximately 2,000 years prior to the Fall of the Twelve Colonies, the last twelve tribes of Kobol leave their planet over conflicts with their gods, as well as a "sort of calamity".

The tribes settle on 12 worlds some distance away (Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I). The tribe's namesakes and icons originally corresponded to the twelve signs of the ancient tribes, although these names drifted over time (Home, Part II).
<div style="clear: both;"></div>

The early Colonies lived (and fought) more as sovereign nations, some prospering, while others, such as Sagittaron and Aerelon, were often considered lessers. For peacetime labor forces as well as for wars between each other, humanity created the Cylons. When these early models rebelled, the Colonies unified their governments under the Articles of Colonization sometime before or during the Cylon War as a federal republic known as the Twelve Colonies of Kobol.
RDM twelve colonies series
Star System
The star system of the Twelve Colonies of Kobol has not been named.

No descriptions are available of the other colonies in terms of their celestial type: Minor planet, moon, or major planet. However, in the Miniseries, Elosha states that the tribes settled onto "12 worlds." While the use of "worlds" is ambiguous, the Colonies are noted as independent celestial bodies.

Although Commander Adama and President Laura Roslin mention leaving the star system, it is unclear whether all twelve colonies are in this star system. However, Caprica, Virgon, and Ragnar (based on tactical data related by Lt. Felix Gaeta) are located within the same star system (Miniseries).

The Colonies had approximately 20 billion inhabitants prior to the Cylon attack (The Resistance).

The Colonies maintained some minor observatories and listening posts in outlying star systems. Economic activity, such as tylium mining also occurred outside of the immediate vicinity around the Colonies (Hero).

Aerelon
Ancient Name: Aries

Aerelon was primarily an agricultural world. It was considered to be the the "food basket" of the Twelve Colonies. Despite this, Aerelon was ranked as one of the poorest members of the Colonies. People from Aerelon are known to have a strong raspy dialect (Dirty Hands).

"Fifteen people died" when President Richard Adar, for reasons unexplained, sent the marines to Aerelon (Water).

The mining colony of Troy, destroyed in a cataclysmic explosion, is located near Aerelon, and may have been operated by natives of that world. Troy was the alleged home of Sharon Valerii (Flesh and Bone).

The professional Pyramid team from Aerelon played against the Caprica Buccaneers in one of the last games before the Cylon attack. They apparently won (Resistance).

While imprisoned on Galactica Gaius Baltar talks extensively about Aerelon, his homeworld. He imitates the speech manerisms of a stereotypical native, a farmer who likes to work with his hands, and "go down the pub for a pint" and have a fight at the end of the night (Dirty Hands).

A photo of a grief-stricken soldier staring out at the ruins of Aerelon's capital hangs behind President Roslin's desk and on the bulkhead of the pilot ready room on Galactica (titled "Lest We Forget"). Galactica's pilots touch the photo for luck as they file past to the hangar. This photo of Aerelon gives viewers the only visual depiction of life on a colony other than Caprica in the Re-imagined Series.

The unnamed Quorum of Twelve delegate from Aerelon voted for Tom Zarek in the vice-presidential elections (Colonial Day)
:The spelling of this colony is sometimes inconsistent in the Re-imagined Series' official cast and crew notes and episode content. The colony is spelled "Aerilon" in the episodes "Home, Part I" and "The Son Also Rises" in official Colonial documentation. Battlestar Wiki chooses to use the more consistently used spelling of "Aerelon" which mainly appears in 'behind the scenes' publications.

Ancient Name: presumably Capricorn

Caprica is a large blue-green planet, and the only colony directly seen by viewers thus far in the Re-imagined Series. Its largest population center is Caprica City, which serves as the seat of all three branches of the Colonial Government and the capital of the Twelve Colonies. Caprica City is surrounded by other small towns and hamlets, such as Oasis.

Other major cities included Delphi, famous for the Delphi Museum of the Colonies and also home to a large spaceport. During the Cylon attack, the Cylons spared Delphi from nuclear bombardment in order to use it as a base of operations in their occupation of the planet.

The human resistance cell, led by Samuel Anders, operated near Delphi.

Caprica is known for its fine Caprican cloth (which Dr. Gaius Baltar wears), fumarella leaf, Caprican cigars and art.

A railway line can be seen below the balcony of Baltar's house on Caprica during "The Hand of God." What appear to be internal combustion engine powered vehicles, such as cars and trucks, are seen extensively in shots of Caprica.

According to Gaius Baltar, Caprica was the seat of politics, culture, art, science, and learning. It was also one of the wealthier colonies (Dirty Hands).

Gemenon natives are called Gemenese (Taking a Break From All Your Worries). They are known for their literal interpretations of the Sacred Scrolls (Fragged). Most of the population of Gemenon was apparently very strongly opposed to the federal laws legalizing abortion. Traditional Gemenese law declares children to be the property of their parents (The Captain's Hand).

Gemenon is home to the Kobol Colleges which has a public relations department (Miniseries). One of the last ever pro Pyramid games was held on Gemenon just prior to the Cylon attack on the Colonies (Miniseries).

Practically no information has been given yet regarding the colony corresponding to Libra. Its colonial-era name also has yet to be confirmed. According to issue 3 of the now-defunct Battlestar Galactica: The Official Magazine, the colony's name is "Libris".

Picon is the location for the Colonial Fleet Headquarters (Miniseries). The colony came under heavy attack during the early stages of the Cylon attack. President Richard Adar offered a complete and unconditional surrender to the Cylons after Fleet Headquarters is destroyed; this overture was ignored (Miniseries, deleted scene).

Ellen Tigh claimed to be at the airport on Picon, "on her way home" when the attack started, and that some "unknown hero" ensured she was put on the last ship to get off the planet (Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down).
Sagittaron endured centuries of exploitation at the hands of the other Colonies (Bastille Day), so much so that even after unified Colonial rule, Tom Zarek of the S.F.M. led an organized series of terrorist acts against the established government there, many years before the fall of the Colonies. One of these acts include blowing up a government building (Bastille Day). Under Sagittaron penal law, convicted felons lose their citizenship, but have it automatically reinstated after they finish serving their sentences. This included the right to vote and to stand for election (Colonial Day).

The Sagittarons practice a form of the Colonial religion that can trace its roots for at least over 1,000 years. Like the Gemenese, they developed a staunch religious stance but with possibly a greater emphasis on traditional folk practice than scripture. They view medicine as "an abomination, a sin against the gods." This stubbornness has led to a bitter dislike by the other Colonies. During the Second Exodus, the bitterness is reinforced by the fact that many Sagittarons on New Caprica did not help to fight the Cylons, suggesting that the Sagittarons are also pacifists by nature.

The Sagittarons practice a form of herbal medicine, which has lead to derogatory terms such as "stubborn rootsucking jackasses". Dr. Michael Robert expresses skepticism about its effectiveness, however his statement implies that there has not been any serious research on the subject (The Woman King).

Sagittaron was also one of the poorer colonies (Dirty Hands).

Sagittaron had 5,251 natives residing in the Fleet after their colony's destruction (33).

Tauron was reputed to be somewhat of a troublesome colony within the federal system of the Colonies, often disobeying directives decided by the colonies and "pushing their luck with the admiralty every chance they got." As a ruse Admiral Adama claimed the Taurons were drilling for tylium ore on a moon that was close to the Armistice Line (Hero).

:This article discusses the Twelve Colonies of the Re-imagined Series. See The Twelve Colonies (TOS) for information on the Colonies of the Original Series.

RDM twelve colonies series

Approximately 2,000 years ago, twelve of the thirteen tribes of Kobol leave the planet due to an issue involving their gods, settling on 12 worlds some distance away (Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I). Their namesakes and icons originally corresponded to the twelve signs of the ancient tribes, although these names drifted over time (Home, Part II).

The early colonies lived (and fought) more as sovereign nations. By the events of the Articles of Colonization, apparently with the advent of the Cylon War, these worlds unify as a federal republic known as the Twelve Colonies of Kobol.

Star System
The star system of the Twelve Colonies of Kobol has not been named.

Caprica has been shown as an Earth-like world, similar to Kobol and New Caprica. No other colonies have been shown to-date. The military base seen in Kara Thrace's flashbacks in "Act of Contrition" may have been part of the facilities on Picon, the location of Fleet Headquarters, but this cannot be substantiated.

Likewise, it remains unknown whether all of the 12 Colonies are Earth-like, and whether or not Caprica's Earth-like ecosystems are the product of environmental modification or whether they occur naturally, as some sort of parallel evolution.

No descriptions are available of the other colonies in terms of their celestial type: Minor planet, moon, or major planet. However, Elosha states in the miniseries that the tribes settle onto "12 worlds." While the use of "worlds" is ambiguous, the colonies are noted as independent celestial bodies.

Although Commander Adama and President Laura Roslin mention leaving the star system, it is unclear whether all twelve colonies are in this star system. However, Caprica, Virgon, and Ragnar (based on tactical data gathered by Lt. Felix Gaeta in the miniseries) are located within the same star system (Miniseries).

Aerelon
"Fifteen people died" when President Richard Adar, for reasons unexplained, sent the Marines to Aerelon (Water).

The mining colony of Troy, destroyed in a cataclysmic explosion (Flesh and Bone) is located near Aerelon, and may have been operated by natives of that world. Troy was the alleged home of Sharon Valerii (Flesh and Bone).

The pro Pyramid team from Aerelon played against the Caprica Buccaneers in one of the last games before the Cylon attack. They apparently won (Resistance).

Outside of Caprica, this photo of Aerelon gives viewers the only visual depiction of life on another colony in the Re-imagined Series.
Caprica is a large blue-green planet. Its largest population center is Caprica City, which serves as the seat of all three branches of the Colonial Government, making Caprica effectively the capital of the Twelve Colonies. Caprica City is surrounded by other small towns and hamlets, such as Oasis.

Thus far, Caprica is the only planet of the Twelve Colonies that viewers have seen directly. The series' opening credits show Caprica City, as well as the nuclear bombing of Caprica itself.

Ellen Tigh claimed to be at the airport on Picon, "on her way home" when the attack started, and that some "unknown hero" ensured she was put on the last ship to get off the planet (Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down).
Sagittaron
Ancient Name: presumably Sagittarius

Like the Gemenese they developed a staunch religious stance but with possibly a greater emphasis on traditional folk practice than scripture. They view medicine as "an abomination, a sin against the gods." This stubbornness has led to a bitter hatred directed towards them by the other Colonies. During the exodus, this is reinforced by the fact that many Sagittarons on New Caprica did not help to fight the Cylons, which increases their rejection, especially among former resistance fighters. The Sagittarons practice a form of herbal medicine, which has lead to derogatory terms such as "stubborn rootsucking jackasses". Dr. Robert expresses skepticism about its effectiveness, however his statement implies that there has not been any serious research on the subject (The Woman King).

Sagittaron has 5,251 natives residing in the Fleet directly after their colony's destruction (33).

Gemenon is home to the Kobol College School of Public Relations (Miniseries).

"Fifteen people died" when President Richard Adar, for reasons unexplained, sent the Marines to Aerelon (Water).

The mining colony of Troy, destroyed in a cataclysmic explosion (Flesh and Bone) is located near Aerelon, and may have been operated by natives of that world. Troy was the alleged home of Sharon Valerii (Flesh and Bone).

The pro Pyramid team from Aerelon played against the Caprica Buccaneers in one of the last games before the Cylon attack. They apparently won (Resistance).

Gemenon is home to the Kobol College School of Public Relations (Miniseries). One of the last ever pro Pyramid games was held on Gemenon just prior to the Cylon attack on the Colonies (Miniseries).

The unnamed Quorum of Twelve delegate from Tauron votes for Gaius Baltar in the vice-presidential elections (Colonial Day).

Tauron was reputed to be somewhat of a rogue colony, often disobeying directives decided by the colonies and "pushing their luck with the admiralty every chance they got." As a ruse Admiral Adama claimed the Taurons were drilling for tylium ore on a moon that was close to the Armistice Line (Hero).

Soon after the Cylon attack began, the bulk of the spacewide offensive by the Colonials began "shaping up" over the planet. The battle ostensibly ends with the destruction of battlestar Atlantia and the death of Admiral Nagala.

Description
In the re-imagined series, Cylon basestars (also referred to as "baseships" or "Cylon battlestars") are by far the most prominent example of Cylon presence. They easily dwarf a Colonial battlestar and appear to be technologically superior in every way. Basestars appear no visible means of sublight propulsion, but are equipped with an Jump system that is far superior to that of Colonial battlestars.

Basestars are capable of releasing several hundred Cylon Raiders at the same time according to the number of launch "slots" located along each of the spires the basestar. A basestar can release as many as 792 Raiders as seen in the following images: 1, 2, and 3.)citation needed

Beyond this, not much is known about the interior operations or command structure of a basestar. A basestar's size suggests that it has a large crew complement, although there is ample evidence to suggest their operations are largely automated, or that the basestar itself is a Cylon entity similar to the autononous personality of a Raider or even a Cylon agent. There is no evidence thus far to suggest that a basestar has a central autonomous commander or command hierachy as found on battlestars.

A basestar's weapons complement indicates missiles on a similar principle to the United States' VLS system, which is capable of launching coventional or nuclear missiles. In "scream and leap" ambushes commonly used by basestars, the use of nuclear attacks against capital targets such as Galactica appears prohibited to minimize capital Cylon fighter losses or damage to the basestar itself.

Two basestars were torn apart by the kinetic guns of battlestars Pegasus and Galactica in a joint mission to destroy a Cylon Resurrection Ship. It would seem that that basestars rely heavily on their Raiders for close-range gun defense through sheer numbers of fighters. Since a basestar does not appear to have batteries (the primary offensive/defensive weapons on battlestars), basestars appear quite vulnerable to battlestars in close-range combat (Resurrection Ship, Part II).

Encounters with the Colonial Fleet
* As part of an annual offering of diplomacy, the Colonial Fleet staffs the Armistice Station in the hopes that the Cylons will attend, but it goes unfulfilled for forty years. Suddenly, without any warning or detection, a Cylon basestar arrives over the station, and dispatches a Cylon agent to the station. This agent accosts the Armistice Officer as the basestar launches a salvo of missiles and obliterates the station.

* Days later, the Cylons begin their genocidal campaign against the Twelve Colonies. Had basestars orbited the Colonies they would have been easily detected by DRADIS so it is likely the nuclear attacks were suicide bombings conducted by the various human looking cylon models. Several basestars orbit the ruined planet of Caprica as Lt. Sharon "Boomer" Valerii guides her Raptor to an emergency landing on the planet during the attack. Boomer's Raptor guides by debris of destroyed Colonial units, including the shattered hulk of a battlestar (Miniseries).

* A substantial Cylon force consisting of no less than two basestars and several hundred fighters and other small craft converge on Ragnar Anchorage in an attempt to flush out and destroy the fugitive ships led by the battlestar Galactica. After transferring as many armaments and supplies as possible from the munitions depot, Galactica departs the station's surrounding EM storm and presents itself as a shield, allowing the Fleet to slip out and make Jumps away. The entire contingent of civilian ships escape, as does Galactica after she and her Vipers endure a thorough pounding (Miniseries).

* Basestars pursue Galactica and the Colonial Fleet for five full days after the escape from Ragnar. Galactica spurs the Fleet to stay on the move, executing FTL Jump after Jump, only to see the Cylons reappear at each location 33 minutes later (33). The Cylons had apparently infiltrated the Olympic Carrier, a civilian starliner, and are able to track it through each successive Jump. Following the 239th Jump, the Olympic Carrier doesn't immediately rendevous at the jump coordinates, and it is feared the ship is lost. She reappears later, but several indications hint that she has been overtaken by Cylon forces, and the Colonials have no recourse but to destroy the liner. As soon as Galactica's Vipers destroy the liner, the basestars arrive on the scene, and the Colonial Fleet executes their 240th Jump. The Cylons do not immediately follow, ending the pursuit.

* The Fleet eludes further contact with the Cylon forces for several weeks. The planet Kobol is discovered by a single Raptor on a probing reconnaissance mission, and a follow-up mission is planned. The reconnaissance team of three Raptors is surprised by a basestar now in orbit over Kobol, and screening Cylon Raiders obliterate one Raptor while shooting down another and forcing it to crash land on the planet below. The remaining Raptor escapes back to battlestar Galactica, relaying the shocking news. Commander Adama devises a plan to eliminate the basestar, using a Raptor fitted with a Cylon Transponder to deploy a nuclear warhead inside. Lt. Sharon "Boomer" Valerii is later tasked to the mission, accompanied by new ECO Lt. Margaret "Racetrack" Edmonson. En route, the transponder works exactly as planned. Despite their anxiety, the Raptor infiltrates the basestar. The interior view of the basestar that Boomer and Racktrack are afforded is overwhelming &ndash; a vast, cavernous void of bio-mechanical components lacking a distinctive floor or ceiling. Surfaces appear organic &ndash; fleshy if they were to be touched &ndash; resembling the interiors of a Raider. During the deployment of the nuclear warhead, Boomer exits the Raptor and removes her helmet, indicating that the interior space is indeed pressurized and oxygenated, more than likely controlled by ventricle-like airlocks evident during the Raptor's entrance. The pair extricate themselves from inside the basestar, and once outside, detonate the warhead. The annihilation of this basestar represents the first aired instance in the series that Colonial forces successfully destroy a basestar (Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II).

* Scant moments after this victory, another basestar ambushes Galactica, causing the crew to perform yet another immediate FTL Jump. This haphazard Jump (due to mishandled coordinate updates) separates the battlestar from the rest of the Fleet, and a few hours are spent developing a course of action. The decision is made to jump back to Kobol to recalculate the Jump coordinates, and upon doing so, the battlestar and the basestar square off in a vicious engagement. During the recalculation, a Cylon Heavy Raider manages to crash-land on Galactica's starboard flight pod (Scattered). After the battlestar Jumps away, the basestar too departs the area after sending a detachment of Centurions to Kobol.

* Upon the reunion of the Colonial Fleet with the assumed-lost battlestar Pegasus, Admiral Helena Cain reveals that a Cylon fleet, consisting of two basestars and a mysterious unknown ship, has been following Galactica (Pegasus). By way of a bold reconnaissance mission in the Colonial Blackbird, the commanding officers discover the identity of the mysterious vessel to be the Cylon Resurrection Ship (Resurrection Ship, Part I). The Colonials concoct an aggressive, intricate plan using stealth, deception, and sheer brute force to eradicate the Resurrection Ship, as well as its escorting basestars. In a brilliant display of firepower, the two battlestars make short work of the two basestars, suffering minimal damage in return (Resurrection Ship, Part II).

* Over a month later, and now devoid of their Resurrection Ship, the Cylons deploy basestars in a new tactical fashion. Two Raptors from Pegasus are lured away from their reconnaissance training mission near a binary star cluster, the crews killed by carefully venting their crew compartments, and the Raptors set adrift. In his zeal to retrieve the Raptors, newly-promoted Commander Barry Garner disregards both Admiral Adama's orders and Major Lee Adama's advice and takes Pegasus to the last known location of the missing craft. Pegasus deploys two more Raptors to scan the located Raptors. As the rescue Raptors discover the lost Raptors' fate, three basestars pounce upon the Colonials and immediately engage by launching salvos of nuclear missiles &mdash; the first time they've done so since the destruction of the Colonies. Pegasus reels under heavy damage, and only through the heroic self-sacrifice of Commander Garner, the sound direction of Major Adama, and the unwavering support of Pegasus's Vipers (led by Captain "Starbuck" Thrace) the battlestar survives. As a means of buying time until the disabled FTL drive was repaired, Major Adama directs the battlestar's forward gun batteries to barrage the closest basestar, focusing on the core of it until it is forced to withdraw. Pegasus indeed survives this encounter, albeit with a substantial amount of damage, but it heralds a less brashly aggressive, more subversively calculative approach by the Cylons (The Captain's Hand).

* The most recent appearance of basestars comes at the fall of New Caprica to Cylon occupation. Several basestars emerge from the planet's shrouding nebula, and in the face of overwhelming strength and numbers, an understaffed Colonial Fleet makes a reluctant Jump away, and the Cylons take the planet without firing a shot.
