After the ceremonies, the transport begins its return to [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Caprica|Caprica]] with Captain [[Lee Adama]] escorting the starliner in [[Viper 7242|his father's old Viper]], carrying ''Galactica's'' old [[EMP]] coils in her hangar bay for return to Caprica.

Approximately 3 hours from Caprica, the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies|Cylon attack]] commences. Lee Adama saves the day once more using ''Galactica's'' old [[EMP]] coils to disable the missiles and fool the Cylons in thinking the small fleet was destroyed. Faced with the threat of further Cylon forces coming, Laura Roslin is forced to order all ''FTL'' capable vessels to jump to Ragnar Anchorage, leaving the sublight vessels behind where they are destroyed by the Cylons. The exact number of casualties from this action is unknown, but believed to be in the several thousands.

While this ordinary starliner probably lacks many of the facilities and systems the original ''Colonial One'' would have boasted, President Roslin nevertheless made it her base of operations during her term as Colonial President as did her successor President [[Gaius Baltar]]. Locating the administration aboard a civilian craft and not the arguably more logical choice of the battlestar ''Galactica'' helps to keep the civilian administration figuratively distinct as well as physically separate from [[William Adama]]'s military leadership. As well, ''Colonial One's'' security is handled by the [[Presidential security service]], which is independent of the military leadership.

Baltar continued to use ''Colonial One'' as base of operations for his administration, even going so far as to land ''Colonial One'' on the surface of [[New Caprica]] on a hilltop overlooking the new settlement. From here he could oversee the colonization of the planet, while the ship itself could act as a visual symbol of the presidency and de facto office building/White House equivalent for the administration.

A year after his election, President Baltar had all but done away with the modesty of Roslin's office on the ship. He remade it to resemble his old house on Caprica, replacing Roslin's simple desk with an extravagant wood desk, her office chair with a decorated leather seat, and her back office with an apparent sleeping chambers for his harem. He removed the white board with its population-count as well as the [[Lest We Forget|image of a rescue worker]] given to Roslin in "[[33]]". The white board was replaced with a picture of himself (in a sense symbolically laying his own ego over his responsibility to protect the people).

A year after the discovery of the planet, [[New Caprica]] is detected and occupied by the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylons]] ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]). A [[Cylon Occupation Authority|Cylon "advisory committee"]] made up of representatives of each of the revealed Cylon models join Baltar aboard ''Colonial One'', although it's unclear whether they physically live aboard the vessel (more likely they lived in the Cylon-built administration and jail complex nearby). The Cylon committee forms the real government of New Caprica while Baltar's administration is reduced to no more than a puppet regime maintained to put a human face on increasingly horrific Cylon actions. These actions force many to resist the administration, including [[Felix Gaeta]] who uses his access to ''Colonial One'' to acquire information that can aid the growing [[New Caprica Resistance|human insurrection movement]]. Eventually the resistance stages a series of major strikes that, with the aid of Admiral Adama and the battlestars ''Galactica'' and ''Pegasus'', force the Cylons and Baltar to abandon the colony during the [[Battle of New Caprica]].

During the operation, the deserted vessel is boarded by former president Laura Roslin and a small force under her command as Roslin claims the ship as hers (probably due both to how long she'd lived there, and her leadership of the resistance; Vice President Zarek tacitly acknowledges her ''de facto'' supremacy by not contradict her and by assigning Jammer to protect her while wishing her good luck). Utilizing launch keys covertly obtained by Sharon Agathon, the force are able to re-activate ''Colonial One's'' launch thrusters and [[FTL|FTL drive]] and flee from New Caprica along with the remaining colonists. ''Colonial One'' is the last human ship to leave the planet.

=== There and Back Again: President Roslin's Second Administration ===
With President Baltar having either died or abandoned his office, Vice President Tom Zarek assumes the presidency and reigns briefly aboard ''Colonial One''; whether or not Laura Roslin resided in the ship during the interim Zarek presidency is unclear. Zarek knows that he lacks the military's allegiance and that the will of the people is for Roslin to govern. The principal activities of the Zarak's caretaker administration appear to be effecting a smooth and legal transition to second Roslin administration and the swift and secret [[The Circle|adjudication of a number of collaboration and treason cases]], claimed to save Roslin and the population from months of painful and divisive "witch hunts". Laura Roslin, through an appointment-and-succession deal with Tom Zarek, once again takes office as Colonial President with Zarek as her Vice President. The ship is subsequently re-established as the center of the civilian government and resumes its fleet position traveling near ''Galactica'' ([[Collaborators]]). With ''[[Cloud Nine]]'' destroyed, [[Quorum of Twelve (RDM)|Quorum]] meetings are held aboard ''Colonial One'' from there on.

When redecorating and cleaning the office after Baltar's opulent reign, Roslin and Foster joke about hanging Baltar's portrait in the bathroom over the toilet as they feel that this is the only place where it belongs ([[Hero]]).

During a routine patrol around the Fleet, a Raptor manned by [[Margaret Edmondson]] and [[Hamish McCall]] loses flight control due to impurities in its [[tylium]] fuel. Unable to regain control and on a collision course with ''Colonial One'', the two pilots are forced to eject from the Raptor, which impacts the larger vessel near Roslin's office. The accident results in several injuries, but no fatalities. The hull damage forces Roslin and her staff to move to another part of the ship until repairs can be made ([[Dirty Hands]]).

During the [[Battle of the Ionian Nebula]] ''Colonial One'' is nearly destroyed by a Cylon missile. The missile is intercepted moments before impact by a quick-thinking [[Seelix]], who is taking part in active combat for the first time ([[He That Believeth in Me]]).

In the weeks preceding [[Gaeta's Mutiny]], Roslin used ''Colonial One'' less and less, in part due to the necessity of being aboard ''Galactica'' for medical treatment. Following the mutiny, during which a massacre of the Quorum of Twelve had occurred on ''Colonial One'', and with her own health deteriorating, Roslin effectively moved government operations to ''Galactica'' ("[[Deadlock]]", "[[Islanded in a Stream of Stars]]"). Despite this, there is no indication that ''Galactica'' has adopted the ''Colonial One'' call-sign, nor is there any indication that the [[Rebel Basestar]] adopted the call-sign when President [[Romo Lampkin|Lampkin]] and Admiral [[Louis Hoshi|Hoshi]] move the fleet leadership there. ''Colonial One'', along with all the surviving ships in the fleet is later flown via remote control by [[Samuel Anders]] into the [[New Earth]]'s sun. ([[Daybreak, Part II]]).

== Size and Configuration ==

''Colonial One'' is small enough to fit inside of ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica's]]'' flight pod ([[Water]]). This makes ''Galactica'' a "safe haven" and also reduces contact with outsiders who would otherwise have the chance to make a move on the important visitors that frequently come and go from ''Colonial One''.

A large main cabin aboard the ship provides seating accommodation for dignitaries and [[Fleet News Service|press]] alike, while forward of this are small, more personal quarters reserved for ministers and their guests. Despite its conversion for government use, ''Colonial One'' retains its own docking bay, large enough to take a Colonial shuttle, and also boasts a cargo hold big enough to house a [[Viper (RDM)|Viper]]-sized craft. Additionally, the ship boasts at least four cargo bays, three of which were converted to hold passengers ([[Miniseries]]).

Following the destruction of the Colonies, the ship's normal passenger capacity was reduced to accommodate the offices and cabins required by government personnel. Civilian passengers on ''Colonial One'' resided in converted sections of the liner. However, the configuration of passenger accommodations seems likely to have changed following the events of the ''Battle of New Caprica'' and the abandonment the human colony there. ''Colonial One'' appears to be carrying a larger complement of civilians, just as ''Galactica ''is carrying a larger crew of military personnel (from the destroyed ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]'') mixed with civilians. For example, as Roslin negotiates with [[Tom Zarek]] over his future role in the presidential administration in the episode "[[Collaborators]]", two children can be seen playing in a corner of the President's office. This overcrowding is presumably due to the loss of several ships [[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II|before]] and [[Exodus, Part II|during]] the evacuation of New Caprica, as well as the need to spread out the remaining population among the existing ships.

Correctly, the designation is only used when the president is on board. As ''Colonial One'' continues to be referred to as such even without the president aboard suggests the Colonies, or at least the Fleet, follow a different protocol. Despite President Roslin being based aboard ''Galactica'' for much of the time since the discovery of Earth, and with her effectively moving government and Quorum operations there (as indicated in "[[Deadlock]]") there appears to have been no attempt at following the naming protocol with regards to the battlestar, which otherwise should now be known as ''Colonial One''. This could also reflect Galactica's role as a naval carrier and not a mere passenger ship.

Since the episode apparently has an [http://syfyportal.com/news425104.html advance screening] tomorrow, maybe we should lock the article. I vaguely I recall that a similar screening resulted in the episode summary or analysis to be written. That's not so bad, but we have no way to verify the stuff. Plus, I don't think we should spoil it for everyone just because a handful of people have seen the episode already. It's probably not that likely that there will be massive edits, but taking precautions doesn't hurt. Although I think it might be possible for a zombie computer to do this, I'm leaning towards the idea that it's an actual person. I picked up most of the idea from the Scifi.com forums, although it had occurred to me. If it was unintentional, then why not throw a woman in the background of the Pegasus CIC, or into the ready room? Why write the Pegasus deck gang as a group of crude gang rapists? Listen to the dialogue in that scene—that's *not* how men usually speak in mixed company, and the fact that they do speak that way in mixed company suggests they've forgotten how to act around women. I also find it amazing how many of us aren't quite as shocked at Boomer getting shot to death as we are at Boomer getting pinned down and almost raped by Lieutenant Thorne. The reason for that is probably that killing a Cylon has some sort of purpose, while raping one is just a sick and twisted way to cause pointless suffering. As for Ricimer, his edit warring and irrational vendetta against me must give some meaning to his life but I've learned to pretty much ignore him. I think that the proportion of females among the ''Pegasus'' crew is interesting and all, but I think it's much more interesting that Cain has such a dismissive attitude towards Roslin. Her Deck Chief was (he hints) forceably drafted into service after being rescued from the station just before the ''Pegasus'' lit out. This, paird with Cain's general disregard for Roslin indicate to ''me'' anyway, that she doesn't like civies hanging about. She doesn't want them looking over her shoulder, she doesn't want them asking for parts or asking for defense and the ''certainly'' doesn't want to be held accountable to them. Before she ran across our RTFF, she was Ultimate King for Life of All Humans. I think she doesn't want to give that up. The pair are arrested for courts-martial.

**Dualla explains in "[[Final Cut]]" that their ships have very effective refrigeration units to keep food fresh for long duration duty tours, etc.
*In the absence of Apollo and Starbuck, who is leading Galactica's fighters against Pegasus? [[George Birch]]? [[Symes]]?
*As for the unknown ship in the Cylon fleet, what ''is'' its function? Is it, as Adama speculates, a Raider factory? Or a Command-and-Control vessel? Could it be a HumanoCylon creation facility? The next episodes' title "Resurrection Ship" could foreshadow that possibility, as when HumanoCylons "die" they're downloaded into new bodies, and these new bodies are stockpiled where?

*[[Cally]]'s charged reaction to the drunken Pegasus crewmen ''bragging'' about raping Number Six/Gina repeatedly is probably due to herself being the survivor of an attempted rape, in "[[Bastille Day]]".
*Talking amongst themselves on Cylon-occupied Caprica, the Cylons mentioned in passing that there was a main Cylon fleet in "[[Final Cut]]".
*In the miniseries, Adama first proposes that the ''Galactica'' will go about independent of the rest of the fleet and fight the Cylons. Roslin persuades him to instead protect and lead the fleet on their escape from the colonies. The ''Pegasus'', in contrast, ''did'' travel about independently attacking the Cylons. **It seems likely, however, that if the show's creators had the 'sexual power' angle in mind they would have represented it in some way in the actual show--there is no real evidence of any of this in the episode aside from the apparent lack of female cast members, and the jump to these conclusions seems a large one. Additionally, some viewers recall seeing female extras walking the corridors of the Pegasus. Even if female crew members are seemingly underrepresented in the few characters we've had a chance to become aquainted with thus far, it seems likely that it is a coincidence (that the roles were chosen because of the suitability of the actors for the roles, not because of their gender). [[Ron Moore]] has expressed in his podcasts that his vision of the Battlestar Galactica universe is being more or less completely egalitarian with regard to gender.
**This contention further seems unlikely as about one-third of the way through the episode, a female Viper pilot from the Pegasus is prominently portrayed (the scene on the hanger deck before the argument between Apollo and Pegasus' CAG)
***While this is true, the absence of female extras in the ready room or the background of CIC (where any actual acting talent would likely be unnecessary) suggests an intentional decision made during production.
****Female extras can be seen at least once. There are two female pilots in the Pegasus pilot ready room during the briefing, then at least two more can be seen as the pilots leave the ready room. Later, female crew are visible again during Adama and Cain's phone conversation at the end. No less than two, possibly three female Pegasus crew are standing around talking outside that wall of windows behind Cain, and they then split up and wander off in various directions.
*Cally's disgust with the ''Pegasus'' crew's gang-rape of Gina is interesting in light of the fact that she had no compunctions about killing the ''Galactica'' copy of Boomer herself. Evidently she now acknowledges the Cylons' humanity in at least some measure. Perhaps she's felt a connection between this and her own assault on board ''[[Astral Queen]]'' by [[Mason]] in "[[Bastille Day]]".

== Notes ==

*Population count is 49,605, a dramatic increase of 1,752 since the 47,853 count in [[Flight of the Phoenix]], undoubtedly to account for the addition of Battlestar ''[[Pegasus]]'' and her crew to the Colonial fleet.
**Cain notes that Pegasus lost 700 crew in the openning attack, thus we may speculate that at the time of the attack her crew totalled to about 2,450.
**During the episode, [[Cain, Nelena|Admiral Cain]] mentioned that due to [[Gina]]'s actions, 800 of her crew were lost. One possibility is that part of the 800 included the 700 lost during the initial attack. That being the case, the revised total number is 2,550. If the 800 crew lost was due to a separate incident, then the starting Pegasus numbers maybe around 3,250.
**This is substantially smaller than <i>[[Galactica]]</i>'s crew, possibly explained by many of Cain's crew being on leave at the time of the attack. Galactica, although soon to be decomissioned, was still fully operational. Also, Pegasus's systems are newer, and may be more automated.
* As the episode ends, it's interesting to see that the bulk of [[Galactica]]'s Viper fleet consist of the Mark II's, while [[Pegasus]] had the Mark VII's. A classic picture of "old vs. new".
**While ''Pegasus'' seems to have entirely Viper Mk. VII's, they would presumably have had to removed most of the automated systems from them (to prevent Cylon virus infiltration). Doing this makes them more difficult to fly (''Galactica's'' few Mk. VII's are only used by the most capable pilots now). ''Pegasus' '' pilots might have more advanced fighers but they aren't as reliable now as the tried-and-true Mk. II's.
* [[Nelena Cain]] is the female version of [[Cain (TOS)|Cain]], who was portrayed by the late [[Lloyd Bridges]] in the original ''[[Battlestar Galactica (1978)|Battlestar Galactica]]''.

*Ron D. Moore stated in his podcast that there were a number of scenes filmed for this episode that had to be deleted for time, but that he expects to be edited back into the episode for the DVD release. According to Moore, although most episode rough cuts run a little overtime and one or two scenes have to be edited out, "Pegasus" had more than a full extra Act worth of material left over. The full episode would have been an hour and 15 minutes long. Moore tried to put in more scened to push it to 90 minutes, in which case Scifi Channel would aire it as a 90 minutes special (as they had done in the past for "Stargate Sg-1" on occasion), but ultimately not enough material could be included in "Pegasus" to make it 90 minutes long without detracting from story quality; they were left with an episode that was too short to be a 90 minute special, but also too long to include all filmed scenes in a one hour episode. Deleted scenes, which Moore says will be resorted in the DVD release, include:
**A scene when Adama, Tigh, and Roslin are heading to the flight deck to meet Admiral Cain when she first arrives on the ship, and while they're walking Adama and Tigh give Roslin a brief biography of Cain; who she is, that she was an up and coming officer promoted to Admiral over several other possible choices, etc.
**An extension to Admiral Cain's meeting with Adama and Roslin in Adama's quarters, in which she explains that ''Pegasus'' survived Cylon computer virus infiltration through the [[Command Navigation Program]] because ''Pegasus'' was being overhauled at the shipyards, and most of her computers were disconnected.
**A scene where Admiral Cain asks about ''Galactica's'' Cylon-prisoner, Caprica-Sharon, and goes to the brig to observe her.

It would also expand on Cain's refusal to acknowledge Roslin as the President (and therefore her superior as Commander-in-Chief).
