[[Colonial Fleet|Fleet]] dockyards located, presumably, in orbit around [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Scorpia|Scorpia]]. At the time of the [[Cylon attack]], the ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]'', two other [[battlestar]]s, and three other Colonial Fleet ships were stationed there. A Cylon nuclear attack destroyed the Yards and all ships but the ''Pegasus'', which escaped via a [[blind jump]]. Although 700 crewmen from the ''Pegasus'' were killed, several of the crew of the Shipyards and the other vessels docked there - including the [[Cylon agent]] [[Gina]] - escaped aboard ''Pegasus''.

* The [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]] is mending its wounds from its passage to the [[algae planet]]. The harvest proceeds well and is into its 14th day, and appears to be closing up shop.
*[[Kara Thrace|Starbuck]] flies from ''[[Galactica]]'' to the harvest camp in a [[Raptor]], intentionally creating more noise than usual. [[Lee Adama]] is managing the harvest operations with his wife, [[Anastasia Dualla]].
*When Major Adama leaves to greet Kara Thrace, Dualla's face barely hides her disappointment and frustration at Adama's hasty departure.
*Major Adama greets Thrace with an admonishment of her piloting, but his comments are very brief; the two pilots embrace and passionately kiss.
*Adama wants he and Thrace to stop hiding their feelings and divorce their respective spouses. Thrace reminds him that marriage in the eyes of the [[Religion in the Twelve Colonies#The Lords of Kobol|gods]] is a sacrament; she has made a vow she will not break. Adama reminds her that their repeated secret encounters would be frowned on by the gods as well. Adama becomes frustrated, Thrace holds her position, and the two are left trapped in their feelings.
*On a [[Basestar (RDM)|basestar]], the little human/Cylon hybrid, [[Hera]], is crying and is not well. [[Gaius Baltar]] is awakened by her cries and visits the child, who is attended by the [[Number Eight]] known once as [[Sharon Valerii]].
*[[Galen Tyrol]] is part of the harvest team. He is repeatedly distracted by something which apparently only he can sense, and keeps looking out towards the unexplored hills beyond the harvest site. [[Samuel Anders]], also working on the harvest, comments that the algae harvest tastes as badly as it smells. Tyrol jokes that the algae is "breakfast, lunch and dinner until we can find a hot-fudge planet."
*After sensing something strange one time too many, Tyrol leaves the harvest camp and begins a trek to a mountainous area. He discovers a door--not a naturally-carved one, but a rectangular door, apparently constructed by human hands.
*Tyrol enters the door and walks through a passageway into an immensely large domed room, carved from within the mountain. In the center of the room is a center spire that reaches high into the structure. The spire is surrounded by five pentagonal obelisks. The center spire has ancient tribal carvings at the bottom, as well as illuminated crystalline pillars atop it. Tyrol, the son of a [[Religion in the Twelve Colonies#The Clergy|priest]] and an [[oracle]], has a fair idea of what he has discovered: The [[Temple of Five]].
*[[Laura Roslin]] discusses what she knows with Tyrol over [[wireless]] about this special [[Temple|temple]] as it is told in the [[Sacred Scrolls]] in Admiral [[William Adama]]'s quarters. But before they can digest the information further, they are alerted to four [[Basestar (RDM)|basestars]] that [[FTL|jump]] into orbit of the planet and move towards the Fleet.
*Admiral Adama orders the civilian Fleet to escape to [[emergency jump coordinates]], but leaves ''[[Galactica]]'' behind; Adama does not want to repeat the situation on [[New Caprica]], where he retreated with the remains of the Fleet and abandoned the colonists there. Adama chooses to stay to protect his harvest team until they can escape. He and Roslin also agree that, if the Temple of Five has a marker to [[Earth]], they must not let the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylons]] take it.
*However, very uncharacteristically, the Cylons do not attack. In fact, they request communications with Adama. The voice that Adama hears is not a welcome one: It is [[Gaius Baltar]]'s.
*The Cylons request a meeting on ''Galactica'' to discuss the [[Eye of Jupiter]]. The [[Number Three]] copy that Baltar calls [[D'Anna Biers|D'Anna]], a copy of [[Cavil]], Baltar, and the [[Number Eight]] copy once known as [[Sharon Valerii]] board the battlestar under heavy [[marine]] guard.
*The virtual [[Number Six]] in Baltar's mind warns him that, while he may feel like he has returned home, he cannot stay: The Colonials would "toss (him) into an airlock and have a party."
*On the way to the meeting, [[Sharon Agathon]] recognizes the Eight copy as the former "Boomer" Valerii. Colonel [[Saul Tigh]] denies her entry into the meeting. The two Eights are left outside the doorway, facing each other with mutual looks of contempt.
*The two sides meet. Baltar attempts to take the initiative in an attempt to serve as a mediator, but this infuriates Roslin that she leaves the meeting. Adama receives the Cylon's terms: Leave peacefully so that they can gather the [[Eye of Jupiter]], and they will not attack. Cavil adds the surrender of Baltar to the terms as well, to the former president's and Three's shock.
*Boomer-Eight tells Sharon Agathon that Hera is alive, but unwell, on their basestar. Agathon refuses to believe her.
*Admiral Adama is not amused. He warns that ''Galactica'' will destroy the planet's treasures with his nuclear arsenal should the Cylons attempt to land on the planet. The two sides depart in a state of détente.
*Admiral Adama manages to get an order to his son of the situation and to destroy the site if the Cylons invade before the Cylons jam all wireless communications.
*Major Adama instructs Samuel Anders to organize fireteams to defend against a probable Cylon incursion. Anders, also realizing what Adama has been doing with Thrace, is very angry and initially refuses to oblige until Thrace asks him to comply.
*[[Cally Tyrol|Cally]] and Galen Tyrol speak in the temple. He tells her of how he was annoyed at his parents and their worship. [[Cally Tyrol]] sees reverence on his face, despite his general mood of disbelief.
*Lieutenant [[Felix Gaeta]] has conducted some scans of the star system of the algae planet. He warns that the sun of this system is in danger of becoming a supernova very soon. Gaeta, who normally is as secular as his commander, finds it very strange how the Cylons and Colonials arrive at this one place at this time just before the planet's imminent destruction. Adama notes that the "higher powers" at work appear to have a strange sense of humor.
*The [[basestar command]], with [[Caprica-Six]] and Baltar in attendance, discuss their plan to get the Eye. Cavil feels that annilihation of ''Galactica'' is the best option with the standoff (given that they are machines that can wait out humanity for years and find Earth eventually).
*D'Anna, without consulting the other Cylons, has solely initiated the jamming of Colonial communications, and has already sent a [[Heavy Raider]] with a squad of [[Cylon Centurion|Centurions]] to the planet as the basestar fleet jumped in, successfully avoiding Colonial detection. This action infuriates the others, particularly Caprica-Six.
*D'Anna notes that, as soon as the Centurions recover the Eye, the other Cylons can destroy ''Galactica.''
*The Colonials, with Anders at the lead, plan out their defense on the planet. One team will manage ammunition distribution, another team will create [[tylium]] mines.
*As the harvest team-turned-point defense teams leave the tent, Major Adama compliments Anders for his honest, to-the-point direction to the group, indicating that Anders would make a good officer. Anders scoffs at Adama's compliment, inferring that he knows what Adama and Thrace have been doing. When Adama tries to object, Anders tells Adama not to insult his intelligence, as he is aware that Adama is not that only one that Thrace has enjoyed sexual company with.
*On the basestar, in the [[Hybrid]]'s room, D'Anna-Three is savoring the opportunity to see the faces of the final five [[Cylon agent]]s--"maybe the face of [[God]] himself." The Hybrid notes, in her quizzical manner, that the "five lights of the apocalypse" and the "sins" will be revealed only to the "chosen one," lifting her head and staring directly at Baltar as she repeats, "the chosen one." D'Anna's eyes are closed and is not aware that the Hybrid is addressing Baltar.
*Caprica-Six enters and questions D'Anna's intentions. D'Anna dismisses their three-way relationship as she tells of her plan to leave with Baltar to discover the secrets of the Temple. Six is visibly hurt at being left behind.
*The planet team begin their final preparations, led by Dualla. With [[wireless]] jammed, she notes how hardwired observation points are to be created to warn of any Cylon advance, with Starbuck's Raptor taking point with directions to fly to the nearest observation point to relay any sightings. Thrace's annoyance at Dualla's precise direction leads to some catty replies by Thrace, that Dualla ignores.
*As the observation teams take their positions, Starbuck begins her recon flight. As she turns along a ravine, she spots the Centurion emplacement and is immediately fired upon by the Cylon's missile battery. Starbuck tries to evade and successfully manages to relay that she found Centurions before her Raptor is struck by a missile. With the controls on fire and visibility lost, Starbuck screams as she keeps her hands on the flight controls and fights for control of the Raptor.
*As President Roslin explores what little is known about the Temple of Five from a book of the Sacred Scrolls, Admiral Adama interrupts her. He tells her of Boomer's return and asks if the story of Hera's faked death was true. Roslin admits the truth. When she tries to explain the reasons why, Adama abruptly leaves in anger.
*Adama tells the Agathons of Hera's discovery, and neither are pleased. When Helo argues how painful it was for them and how Adama should know the pain of the moment, Adama reminds him that, unlike [[Zak Adama|his son]], their child is still alive, and that they should be grateful for that. Sharon Agathon wants to see her child.
*Adama reports to Anders that Starbuck's Raptor has gone down, but also tells him that a rescue mission is out of the question; they haven't enough manpower to rescue Thrace and defend their position.
*Six Heavy Raiders leave a basestar towards the planet.
*''Galactica'' sees the Heavy Raiders on [[DRADIS]] immediately. Tigh feels that this is a test to see if the Colonials are bluffing. Roslin believes that they were bluffing until Adama orders [[Hoshi]] to arm of a series of missile tubes, each containing a nuclear missile.
*As Anders argues for Thrace's rescue, Adama explodes in defense of the mission, arguing the point that he has known and cared for Thrace for much longer than Anders, who tells Adama he is going after his wife. Adama's troops hold Anders at gunpoint.
*Tyrol sees that a shaft of light is moving across the central pillar of the temple, moving toward a prominent symbol.
*The basestar command detects the [[Radiological alarm|radiation signature]] of the missiles as ''Galactica'' targets the Temple.

== Analysis ==
*At least eighteen people perished as a result of navigating through the radiation field of the star cluster.
*This episode ends the debate whether [[William Adama|Admiral Adama]] knew about [[Laura Roslin|President Roslin]]'s secret plan to hide [[Hera]] ("[[Downloaded]]", "[[Exodus, Part I]]") -- he did not know.
*[[Caprica-Six]] and [[D'Anna Biers|D'Anna]]'s dialogue indicates that they have been intimate with each other as well as with [[Gaius Baltar|Baltar]].
*This is the first time the Cylons use "human" names on the basestar when not speaking to Baltar. D'Anna is named by Caprica-Six and another Number Three. Cavil's name is used by D'Anna.
*Coincidence (and destiny / predestination) seems to be a major theme with this episode: the humans & Cylons show up at the planet at the same time; the temple is discovered by Tyrol, son of a priest who revered this place; the planet is orbiting a star that will go nova within days.

''[[Pegasus]]'' may be the source, as these warheads may have been resupplied from ''Pegasus'''s arsenal, which likely occurred during the events of "[[Pegasus (episode)|Pegasus]]".
*When the Hybrid speaks of the Chosen One, she looks directly Baltar, not D'Anna, who has her eyes closed.
*Kara Thrace's explanation of marriage as a sacrament is similar to the [[w:Annulment (Catholic Church)|principles of the Roman Catholic Church]]. In this religion, a marriage between a baptized man and woman is one of the seven sacraments of the faith. A sacramental marriage cannot be dissolved, but only reviewed later to determine if the marriage was valid at all. If the marriage is invalid, an annulment is allowed. This suggests, by extension, that Thrace and Anders have had [[dedication ceremony|dedication ceremonies]] (the Colonial equivalent of baptism) if such as requirement is needed by the gods.

At the time of the Cylon Attack, as well as leading his deck crew, Tyrol is overseeing the refurbishment and restoration of [[Viper (RDM)|Viper]] Mark II N7242C - the Viper originally flown by William Adama at the time of the [[Cylon War]] ([[Miniseries]]).

Following the attack, with the ''Galactica'' undermanned, Tyrol also performs the function of senior Damage Control officer ([[Miniseries]] / [[Water]]), a role that brings him into conflict with [[Saul Tigh|Colonel Tigh]] after the ''Galactica'' is struck by a Cylon nuclear warhead.

For several months prior to the Cylon attack, and in its aftermath, Tyrol has been engaged in an affair with Lieutenant (JG) [[Sharon Valerii (Galactica copy)|Sharon Valerii]], a [[Raptor]] pilot aboard the ''Galactica''. Despite the fact the relationship breaks military protocol, senior officers on the ship turn a blind eye to it, while Tyrol's own crew treat it with fond amusement.

When the water supplies on the ''Galactica'' are sabotaged, Tyrol is placed in an awkward position: by her own admmission, Valerii knows explosives were missing from a small-arms locker - potentially making her a suspect - and he is the principal DC investigator into the cause of the explosions which wreck the water tanks. Torn between love and duty, the situation prompts him to hide evidence and allow a theory that the walls of the tanks simply collapsed from fatigue resulting from damage the ''Galactica'' received from a nuclear warhead in the Cylon attack ([[Water]] / [[Miniseries]]).

Following the sabotage attempt, Valerii is ordered to end her relationship with Tyrol ([[Bastille Day]]) as a part of a general tightening-up of security and discipline on ship, only to have Tyrol's deck crew help the two of them to continue to meet in greater secret ([[Litmus]]).

Tyrol's world is thrown further into turmoil when both he and Valerii become the prime suspects in an investigation into how a Cylon agent (a copy of [[Aaron Doral]]) managed to get aboard the ''Galactica'', kill a guard, steal explosives and them blow himself up in a ship's corridor, almost killing Adama and Tigh ([[Litmus]]). When [[Socinus|one of his own Specialists]] is thrown in the brig for dereliction of duty which may have enabled the Cylon to access a weapons locker and steal the explosives, Tyrol is shocked into re-thinking his relationship with Valerii, and ends it himself.

While they continue to encounter one another professionallly - their work means they can hardly avoid one another - Tyrol and Valerii now have an uneasy distance between each other, and Valerii's actions around a captured Cylon [[Raider]] have begun to disturb Tyrol.

Thereafter, Tyrol is part of the team assembled on the ill-fated recon Kobol on the [[Raptor 1]], which then crashlands near the ruins of the [[Tomb of Athena]]. ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I]], [[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II]])

While Tyrol was the more experienced leader, his non-commissioned status left Lt. [[Crashdown]] in charge of the survivors. When Crashdown blamed [[Tarn]] for leaving a needed med kit behind -- Socinus was injured during the crash and a drug called [[serisone]] was needed to help him breathe -- Tyrol stepped in, recommending that he and Cally accompany Tarn. After successfully retrieving the kit from the Raptor crash site and heading back to the party, the trio was ambushed and Tarn was the only one killed. ([[Scattered]]) Eventually, he and Cally make it back to the party, only to find out that it is too late. With no other alternative, Tyrol euthanized Socinus with an overdose of [[morpha]] from both medkits. ([[Valley of Darkness]])

Upon discovering that the Cylons are setting up an anti-aircraft missle battery, Crashdown plans a strike to take the unit (and its accompanying [[DRADIS]] dish) out of operation. While the others of his party, notably Baltar and Cally, attempt to voice their indignation of such a plan, Tyrol firmly reminds them that Crashdown is in charge. Despite Tyrol's own misgivings of how the plan is to be executed, they follow through to the point right before the attack.

When it became clear that there were five Cylons at the battery, Cally refused to act as a distraction. Tyrol attempted to diffuse the situation by trying to state that the DRADIS dish was undefended; all that needed to be done was to destroy that, and the turret could not automatically target any incoming [[SAR]] operation. Crashdown has a breakdown and irrationally threatens to kill Cally, prompting Baltar to kill Crashdown.

As the command officer, per se, Tyrol later destroyed the DRADIS dish as the Cylons pursued them towards it. Tyrol then made a stand against the Cylons, screaming and firing his pistol at them. The Cylons were all killed; a surprised Tyrol turned around and saw that a [[Raptor]], preserved by Tyrol's destruction of the dish, had destroyed the Centurions. ([[Fragged]]).

Tyrol was arrested and interrogated by Colonel Tigh, due to his relationship with Commander Adama's would-be assassin. Tigh accused him of being part of the plot to kill Adama, throwing him in the same cell as Valerii. In order to extract information from Valerii, Baltar injected a drug that induced a systemic shutdown of Tyrol's organs. (This was during an alleged attempt to draw blood from Tyrol for Baltar's Cylon detector.) After extracting the number of Cylons in the Fleet from Valerii's subconscious, Tyrol was spared a painful death -- and was eventually proven to be a bona-fide human.

Tyrol was present when his own deckhand, Cally, killed Valerii, as Tyrol accompanied the security escort to Valerii's testing cell ([[Resistance (episode)|Resistance]]). This act caused Tyrol to withdraw more from interaction with his own staff, many of which were already treating him coldly from his interaction with the now-confirmed Cylon copy of Valerii.

As with many on ''Galactica'', the stress of working without relief in sight or with little hope began to take its toll on Tyrol. For him, the challenge of keeping the old Vipers running with very few spare parts and sometimes extensive damage became too much to manage. Under pressure from [[CAG]] [[Lee Adama]] to keep his Vipers flying, and mostly because he had little else to do, he scribbled out a design for a new fighter and began to assemble it from basic metals and parts ([[Flight of the Phoenix]]). Initially, his flight crews were skeptical that the Chief's project was anything but a pipe dream. But word soon spread as the fuselage formed and Tyrol's dream became reality. While Colonel Tigh was visibly against the project at first, Commander Adama noticed that the project, for whatever outcome it might yield, gave the crew something to strive for, something to hope for, and tacitly allowed off-duty crew to work on the project. Many, including [[Anastasia Dualla]] from the [[CIC]], and [[Kara Thrace]], lent a hand.

Tyrol's group was stuck when trying to place a skin on the new fighter, since spare parts were reserved for the Vipers. But Helo suggested carbon composite materials as an alternative to cover the ship. This solved the covering but added a significant new ability: Stealth. The carbon composites would make the new fighter practically invisible to [[DRADIS]] detection.

After the ship's [[Logic bomb]] crisis, the new fighter, named the [[Blackbird]], was given a trial flight by Kara Thrace, with very good results. In a ceremony, President Roslin christened the fighter, and Tyrol revealed the nickname of the fighter in honor of the President: ''Laura''.

=== Helo's Return ===

After the return of [[Karl Agathon]] and another version of Sharon Valerii, pregnant with Agathon's child, the two attempt to reconcile their feelings for the biological creation. Helo and Tyrol eventually have a fistfight with lots of namecalling over what the Sharons were, but in reality, both were upset over the fact that the two Cylon copies were real people that whom they loved, despite the reality of what they were ([[Flight of the Phoenix]]). Their realization of this fact led them to what amounted to an uneasy truce.

Later on, after the appearance of Admiral [[Helena Cain]] and the advanced [[Mercury-class]] ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]'', he and Agathon stop Lt. [[Alistair Thorne]] from raping Sharon and Tyrol accidentally kills Thorne in the process. Tyrol and Agathon are summarily arrested and transfered to ''Pegasus'' for court martial, against Commander Adama's objections. However, Admiral Cain's "court martial" is over before Adama even knew it began, and she sentenced both to be executed for murder and treason. This prompted Adama to launch Vipers and a Raptor loaded with a marine strike team to recover them both ([[Pegasus (episode)|Pegasus]]).

Helo and Tyrol receive a stay of execution through the efforts of [[Laura Roslin]] while the two battlestar commanders prepare to destroy the [[Resurrection Ship]] and its Cylon attack fleet that has followed ''Galactica''. Tyrol admits to his difficulty with dealing with the existence of the second Sharon, and tells Helo that he's got to "let it go", an idea that Helo supports, both understanding each other's take on the situation.

The two prisoners are seen receiving two sets of visitors, one welcome, one not. First, Lieutenant Adama visits them to tell them how close ''Galactica'' came to a shooting war with ''Pegasus'' ([[Resurrection Ship, Part I]]), asking the two, "Just how many kinds of stupid ''are'' you?" A day or so later, Specialists [[Vireem]] and [[Gage]] bind and beat the two prisoners in retaliation for the death of Lieutenant Thorne. [[Executive officer]] [[Jack Fisk]] comes to break up the beating, but refuses the prisoners' thanks as he was fond of Thorne himself.

After the escaped Cylon agent [[Gina]] escapes and shoots Admiral Cain, killing her, Tyrol and Helo are released and return to ''Galactica.'' Both Tyrol and Helo visit Sharon Valerii at her specialized cell. She happily greets Helo, but completely ignores Tyrol. He gets the hint and soon leaves the room, still unable to recover from the memory of the Sharon he knew as "Boomer."

Tyrol also begins to experience a recurring nightmare in which he jumps from the upper portion of the flight deck to his death. [[Cally]] finds him asleep but twitching on the ''Galactica'' deck, but when she attempts to wake him, he attacks her in a frenzied rage, beating her savagely.

Deeply distressed by what he had done, Tyrol requested counselling with a priest, and was assigned [[Cavil|Brother Cavil]]. After some time with Tyrol, Cavil identifies the source of Tyrol's anxiety as arising from fear that he is a [[Cylon agent|Cylon sleeper agent]], much like [[Sharon Valerii (Galactica copy)|Sharon Valerii]] was. Tyrol points out that Sharon was totally convinced by her programming that she was human; Tyrol is haunted by the fear that it was impossible to truly know if you were a Cylon or not. Cavil assures him that he was not, quipping that he knew "because I'm a Cylon and I've never seen you at any of the meetings.".

[[Cavil]] tells him to get back to work, which is where his real family is, and argues that they, [[Deck Crew 5|the deck crew]], love him, "even Cally, ''especially'' Cally" ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I]]). Tyrol was subsequently responsible for exposing [[Cavil]] as a Cylon agent when he recognized him as one of the returnees from the rescue mission to [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Caprica|Caprica]]. Upon realizing this, Tyrol tackled Cavil, called for security, and stated 'Code Blue.'

Following his rescue, Valerii leads Helo to "her" [[Raptor]], now surrounded by several [[Cylon Centurion]]s, convincing him that they have no direct way off of the planet ([[Water]]).

After receiving a "Colonial signal" on a radio receiver they carry, Valerii leads Helo to a city where they find a fully-equipped "fallout shelter" in which two people can live in reasonable security, hidden from above-ground Cylon operations, and with sufficient supplies to last a considerable period of time ([[Act of Contrition]]).

=== The Experiment ===

The purpose in establishing this "nest" is to elicit an emotional response in Helo towards Valerii. When this fails, as Helo continues to seek a way off Caprica, the Cylons arrange for Valerii to be "captured", concluding that if Helo does not seek to rescue her, the experiment has failed, and he must be killed ([[You Can't Go Home Again]]).

Helo does indeed "rescue" Valerii. Helo has always been fond of Valerii; his long-time affection for her (stilled by "her" relationship with [[Galen Tyrol]]) arises within him from the dramatic rescue, which leads to Helo and Valerii having sex ([[Six Degrees of Separation]]). Valerii later reports this achievement to Doral and Six. A new hideout, a cabin in the woods, is being constructed for Helo and Valerii. She is instructed to lead him there and have him stay with her - or kill him if he attempts to leave ([[Flesh and Bone]]).

She solicits her aid in finding the missing Thrace ([[The Farm]]).

After Thrace escapes to the outside of the hospital where she was imprisoned, Valerii arrives at the rescue scene in a stolen [[Heavy Raider]] and destroys several Centurions that attack the Resistance rescue party. As priestess [[Elosha]] examines a gravestone marker along the ancient trail, the handcuffed Valerii senses danger but is too late to warn anyone; two "Bouncing Betty"-style antipersonnel mines detonate, killing Elosha. At the same instant, a group of Centurions open fire. As others hide or return fire, Valerii vaults away, with Lee Adama in pursuit, believing she is trying to escape. Valerii scoops up a grenade launcher lying ahead, and just as Lee Adama thinks she is about to shoot him, she aims for the last Centurion and destroys it ([[Home, Part I]]). At camp, Adama and Thrace are perplexed that Helo still loves Valerii, despite his awareness of her true nature as a Cylon.

During the trek, Valerii casually tells Helo that their child is a girl. Not long after, Commander Adama's search party arrives at Roslin's camp. The warm reunion of the two leaders and family is interrupted when Adama sees this second copy of Sharon Valerii. Reacting as his son did, Commander Adama immediately tries to choke her to death. He releases her after experiencing terrible chest pains (probably the result of his recent surgery, or from anxiety), as she says "And you asked 'why'?" (mysteriously referencing what Commander Adama said over the dead body of "Boomer" Valerii).

[[Tom Zarek]]'s follower, [[Meier]], tries to convince Valerii to help him kill both Adamas as part of a power play by Zarek. Valerii believed her ''Galactica'' counterpart was being held in the [[brig]], but Meier informs her that she was killed. She expresses her outrage to Helo that [[Cally]] killed Boomer, receiving only a minor punishment. Valerii deduces that the Colonials don't see humanoid Cylons are people; she is a thing they may destroy once they no longer need her. Valerii appears to take up Meier's proposal to kill Commander Adama and Lee Adama, but after they all draw their weapons, she shoots Meier instead, saving the lives of both Adamas. She announces to Commander Adama that she is not the same Sharon Valerii that shot him, and that she is not a sleeper agent with hidden protocols waiting to activate; she makes her own choices. She surrenders the weapon to Commander Adama, to everyone's surprise.

=== The Cooperative Cylon ===

Subsequently, Valerii is brought aboard battlestar ''[[Galactica]]'' and imprisoned in a new reinforced cell designed to incarcerate "Boomer." The virtual [[Number Six]] tells Dr. Baltar that Valerii's baby will be born in that cell. Number Six considers Valerii's and Helo's biological child to be hers; she says that she will be its "mother" and Baltar will be its "father" ([[Home, Part II]]).

While in her cell, Valerii nearly has a miscarriage, and is rushed to [[Sickbay]] where Dr. [[Cottle]] succeeds in saving the fetus. [[D'anna Biers]], a reporter for the [[Fleet News Service]], stumbles upon Valerii while filming her documentary in Sickbay. Biers threatens to expose that Commander Adama is harboring a Cylon aboard ''Galactica'', but he confiscates what he believed was Biers' tape of Valerii. In reality, Biers secretly switches tapes and keeps the real one. This critical information was not broadcast in the final cut of her documentary distributed to the Fleet, but it was broadcast back to other Cylons on Caprica (by way of two Raiders that attack ''Galactica'' in order to get within transmission range). The Cylons on Caprica (including another copy of Biers and yet another Valerii copy) are surprised yet overjoyed that Helo's Valerii is still alive (they are apparently unaware that she had survived). They are incredibly concerned that her hybrid child survives, saying that it must be protected at all costs ([[Final Cut]]).

When ''Galactica'' experiences mysterious computer failures and system malfunctions from a mutated version of a Cylon virus [[Valley of Darkness|thought eradicated]], Commander Adama orders Helo to show the incarcerated Valerii the strange Cylon code. Valerii identifies it as a very virulent [[Logic bomb]] that will take control of the ship and kill off the crew without her help. Reluctantly, on advice from President Roslin, Commander Adama brings Valerii to [[CIC]], where Valerii cuts her arm open and connects her body to a fiber optic line to communicate with ''Galactica's'' mainframe [[Computers|computer]] and communication channels. The process is painful both to Valerii and to the crew watching the spectacle. With Valerii now with access, she takes into her a portion of the logic bomb code, then instructs Lieutenant [[Felix Gaeta|Gaeta]] to wipe the hard drives of the system computers to erase all Cylon virus traces for good. ''Galactica'' is a sitting duck to a massive Cylon fighter force on the outskirts of [[DRADIS]] range while Valerii makes adjustments to the code. She resends the code out on the communication channels to the Cylon fleet. In a reversal of the events suffered by the Colonials in the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies|holocaust]], every Cylon fighter loses power and weapons. Adama's Vipers have a [[Great Cylon Turkey Shoot|free-for-all shooting]], destroying every Cylon fighter without a single Colonial casualty ([[Flight of the Phoenix]]).

=== The Cylon "Interrogator" ===

After ''Galactica'' reunites with battlestar ''Pegasus'', Admiral [[Helena Cain]] sends Lieutenant [[Alistair Thorne]] to inspect the incarcerated Valerii. He beats and sexually assaults her while his guards watch and hold her. Fortunately for Valerii, both Helo and Tyrol find out about Thorne and what was done to his previous [[Gina|prisoner]] and arrive in time to stop him. Tyrol accidentally kills Thorne in the process. Both he and Helo are arrested by the ''Pegasus'' guards and taken to Cain's battlestar, where Cain hastily convenes courts-martial for the men (without Adama's knowledge) and sentences Agathon and Tyrol to death.

Commander Adama sends a [[Marines|Marine]] force and his Viper squadrons out to retrieve his men. Valerii and all of the fleet await news on the survival of her "past" and current love as a military standoff between the battlestars begins ([[Pegasus (episode)|Pegasus]]).

Valerii's attempted rape by Thorne results in a hairline fracture in one of her ribs and minor bruising. Still in shock for the incident, Commander Adama (who has reached a détenté with Admiral Cain over Helo's execution) personally appologizes to Valerii over the incident ([[Resurrection Ship, Part I]]). This is also the first time that Adama refers to Valerii as a 'her,' as opposed to as an 'it.'

Valerii is happily reunited with Helo and Tyrol when the two are released after Adama resumes full command of the Fleet, though she is more enthusiastic to see Helo than Tyrol. ([[Resurrection Ship, Part II]]).

===The Abortion Question===
Weeks later, President Roslin, on her deathbed, recommends that Valerii's fetus be aborted, fearing dire consequences for the Fleet.

On hearing this news, Helo is terrified, but Valerii, having cooperated fully to aid the Fleet to save herself and her child and to show that not all Cylons are dangerous, is enraged. Marines sent to inspect her and later to take her to [[sickbay]] for the procedure are forced to restrain the angry Cylon.

At the last minute (spurred by threats from his virtual [[Number Six]]), [[Gaius Baltar]] learns of an astonishing ability of the fetal blood of Valerii's baby: it destroys cancer cells. Taking a small blood sample, he injects it into the dying Laura Roslin. Moments later, her cancer is "gone," according to Dr. [[Cottle]]. The abortion procedure is cancelled.

The recovering Roslin visits Valerii in her cell and smiles at the sight of Valerii stroking her belly, just as a human female would ([[Epiphanies]]).

Valerii begins to bleed; her placenta is detaching. An emergency [[Wikipedia:Cesarean section|birth procedure]] must to be performed by Dr. [[Cottle]] to save both the baby's and Caprica-Valerii's life. Helo and Valerii name the baby girl [[Hera]] and marvel at her as she lay in an incubator. Some time later, believing their baby is out of danger, the baby apparently dies due to her underdeveloped lungs and Dr. Cottle's failure to intubate her in time. In a state of shock, Valerii nearly strangles Cottle in grief before being subdued, and subsequently falls into a deep depression.

However, unbeknownst to Caprica-Valerii, Hera is still alive. In a move to not have to kill the baby but at the same time not have it raised by Valerii or risk having it captured by unseen Cylon agents, Valerii's baby was switched with another dead child. President [[Laura Roslin|Roslin]], Dr. Cottle and Presidental aide [[Tory Foster]] place Valerii's baby in the care of [[Maya]], a foster mother. Maya is told a cover story that disguises Hera's true identity ([[Downloaded]]).

Valerii's depression over losing her child only worsens. Helo convinces her to aid in the rescue of [[Samuel Anders|Anders]] and the other survivors on Caprica, in part to try and draw her out of her depression. Valerii's knowledge of Cylon FTL technology makes the rescue possible by acting as a conduit between the Colonial Raptors and the far more advanced FTL computer salvaged from a Heavy Raider ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I]]).

On Caprica, Thrace demonstrates a new level of trust for Valerii by throwing her a gun during a firefight with ambushing Centurions. Later, Valerii is as perplexed as everyone else when the Cylons disengage and apparently leave the planet for good. She ''is'' aware, however, that [[Cavil|Brother Cavil]], a man who approaches the group and loudly proclaims the end of the occupation to be a miracle, is a [[Cylon agent]]. She witholds this information from the others. On ''Galactica'', Cavil is exposed by Chief Tyrol (who realizes that a copy of Cavil was already present in the Fleet). Angered by Valerii's obvious withholding of Cavil's nature, Admiral Adama sends Valerii back to the brig along with Cavil. When asked by a distraught Helo why she didn't report this crucial fact, she replies "They killed my baby. Do you think I care about you, or us, or whether or not Adama trusts me anymore?" Valerii withdraws further, shutting Helo out completely. ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]).

Four months after ''Galactica's'' retreat brings many changes. Sharon Agathon (now married to Karl "Helo" Agathon") is still in her special brig, but Admiral Adama has apparently taken to sitting down to tea and talking in confidence with her. Her cell now has a couch, table, and other amenities.

As part of a plan to rescue the people of New Caprica, Admiral Adama decides to enlist Agathon into the Colonial Fleet as part of an insertion force that will serve as a liaison with a small weapons cache to aid in the resistance and form a plan. Agathon leads two Raptors in an intra-atmosphere Jump successfully and meets with [[Samuel Anders]] and his squad. Their planning is interrupted when an unknown number of [[Cylon Centurion]]s fire at the group ([[Precipice]]).

The warm reunion of the two leaders and family is interrupted when Adama sees this second copy of Sharon Valerii. Reacting as his son did, Commander Adama immediately tries to choke her to death. He releases her after experiencing terrible chest pains (probably the result of his recent surgery, or from anxiety), as she says "And you asked 'why'?" (mysteriously referencing what Commander Adama said over the dead body of "Boomer" Valerii).

[[Tom Zarek]]'s follower, [[Meier]], tries to convince Valerii to help him kill both Adamas as part of a power play by Zarek. Valerii believed her ''Galactica'' counterpart was being held in the [[brig]], but Meier informs her that she was killed. She expresses her outrage to Helo that [[Cally]] killed Boomer, receiving only a minor punishment. Valerii deduces that the Colonials don't see humanoid Cylons are people; she is a thing they may destroy once they no longer need her. Valerii appears to take up Meier's proposal to kill Commander Adama and Lee Adama, but after they all draw their weapons, she shoots Meier instead, saving the lives of both Adamas. She announces to Commander Adama that she is not the same Sharon Valerii that shot him, and that she is not a sleeper agent with hidden protocols waiting to activate; she makes her own choices. She surrenders the weapon to Commander Adama, to everyone's surprise.

=== The Cooperative Cylon ===

Subsequently, Valerii is brought aboard battlestar ''[[Galactica]]'' and imprisoned in a new reinforced cell designed to incarcerate "Boomer." The virtual [[Number Six]] tells Dr. Baltar that Valerii's baby will be born in that cell. Number Six considers Valerii's and Helo's biological child to be hers; she says that she will be its "mother" and Baltar will be its "father" ([[Home, Part II]]).

While in her cell, Valerii nearly has a miscarriage, and is rushed to [[Sickbay]] where Dr. [[Cottle]] succeeds in saving the fetus. [[D'anna Biers]], a reporter for the [[Fleet News Service]], stumbles upon Valerii while filming her documentary in Sickbay. Biers threatens to expose that Commander Adama is harboring a Cylon aboard ''Galactica'', but he confiscates what he believed was Biers' tape of Valerii. In reality, Biers secretly switches tapes and keeps the real one. This critical information was not broadcast in the final cut of her documentary distributed to the Fleet, but it was broadcast back to other Cylons on Caprica (by way of two Raiders that attack ''Galactica'' in order to get within transmission range). The Cylons on Caprica (including another copy of Biers and yet another Valerii copy) are surprised yet overjoyed that Helo's Valerii is still alive (they are apparently unaware that she had survived). They are incredibly concerned that her hybrid child survives, saying that it must be protected at all costs ([[Final Cut]]).

When ''Galactica'' experiences mysterious computer failures and system malfunctions from a mutated version of a Cylon virus [[Valley of Darkness|thought eradicated]], Commander Adama orders Helo to show the incarcerated Valerii the strange Cylon code. Valerii identifies it as a very virulent [[Logic bomb]] that will take control of the ship and kill off the crew without her help. Reluctantly, on advice from President Roslin, Commander Adama brings Valerii to [[CIC]], where Valerii cuts her arm open and connects her body to a fiber optic line to communicate with ''Galactica's'' mainframe [[Computers|computer]] and communication channels. The process is painful both to Valerii and to the crew watching the spectacle. With Valerii now with access, she takes into her a portion of the logic bomb code, then instructs Lieutenant [[Felix Gaeta|Gaeta]] to wipe the hard drives of the system computers to erase all Cylon virus traces for good. ''Galactica'' is a sitting duck to a massive Cylon fighter force on the outskirts of [[DRADIS]] range while Valerii makes adjustments to the code. She resends the code out on the communication channels to the Cylon fleet. In a reversal of the events suffered by the Colonials in the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies|holocaust]], every Cylon fighter loses power and weapons. Adama's Vipers have a [[Great Cylon Turkey Shoot|free-for-all shooting]], destroying every Cylon fighter without a single Colonial casualty ([[Flight of the Phoenix]]).

=== The Cylon "Interrogator" ===

After ''Galactica'' reunites with battlestar ''Pegasus'', Admiral [[Helena Cain]] sends Lieutenant [[Alistair Thorne]] to inspect the incarcerated Valerii. He beats and sexually assaults her while his guards watch and hold her. Fortunately for Valerii, both Helo and Tyrol find out about Thorne and what was done to his previous [[Gina|prisoner]] and arrive in time to stop him. Tyrol accidentally kills Thorne in the process. Both he and Helo are arrested by the ''Pegasus'' guards and taken to Cain's battlestar, where Cain hastily convenes courts-martial for the men (without Adama's knowledge) and sentences Agathon and Tyrol to death.

Commander Adama sends a [[Marines|Marine]] force and his Viper squadrons out to retrieve his men. Valerii and all of the fleet await news on the survival of her "past" and current love as a military standoff between the battlestars begins ([[Pegasus (episode)|Pegasus]]).

Valerii's attempted rape by Thorne results in a hairline fracture in one of her ribs and minor bruising. Still in shock for the incident, Commander Adama (who has reached a détenté with Admiral Cain over Helo's execution) personally appologizes to Valerii over the incident ([[Resurrection Ship, Part I]]). This is also the first time that Adama refers to Valerii as a 'her,' as opposed to as an 'it.'

Valerii is happily reunited with Helo and Tyrol when the two are released after Adama resumes full command of the Fleet, though she is more enthusiastic to see Helo than Tyrol. ([[Resurrection Ship, Part II]]).

===The Abortion Question===
Weeks later, President Roslin, on her deathbed, recommends that Valerii's fetus be aborted, fearing dire consequences for the Fleet.

On hearing this news, Helo is terrified, but Valerii, having cooperated fully to aid the Fleet to save herself and her child and to show that not all Cylons are dangerous, is enraged. Marines sent to inspect her and later to take her to [[sickbay]] for the procedure are forced to restrain the angry Cylon.

At the last minute (spurred by threats from his virtual [[Number Six]]), [[Gaius Baltar]] learns of an astonishing ability of the fetal blood of Valerii's baby: it destroys cancer cells. Taking a small blood sample, he injects it into the dying Laura Roslin. Moments later, her cancer is "gone," according to Dr. [[Cottle]]. The abortion procedure is cancelled.

The recovering Roslin visits Valerii in her cell and smiles at the sight of Valerii stroking her belly, just as a human female would ([[Epiphanies]]).

===The Birth===

Valerii begins to bleed; her placenta is detaching. An emergency [[Wikipedia:Cesarean section|birth procedure]] must to be performed by Dr. [[Cottle]] to save both the baby's and Caprica-Valerii's life. Helo and Valerii name the baby girl [[Hera]] and marvel at her as she lay in an incubator. Some time later, believing their baby is out of danger, the baby apparently dies due to her underdeveloped lungs and Dr. Cottle's failure to intubate her in time. In a state of shock, Valerii nearly strangles Cottle in grief before being subdued, and subsequently falls into a deep depression.

However, unbeknownst to Caprica-Valerii, Hera is still alive. In a move to not have to kill the baby but at the same time not have it raised by Valerii or risk having it captured by unseen Cylon agents, Valerii's baby was switched with another dead child. President [[Laura Roslin|Roslin]], Dr. Cottle and Presidental aide [[Tory Foster]] place Valerii's baby in the care of [[Maya]], a foster mother. Maya is told a cover story that disguises Hera's true identity ([[Downloaded]]).

Valerii's depression over losing her child only worsens. Helo convinces her to aid in the rescue of [[Samuel Anders|Anders]] and the other survivors on Caprica, in part to try and draw her out of her depression. Valerii's knowledge of Cylon FTL technology makes the rescue possible by acting as a conduit between the Colonial Raptors and the far more advanced FTL computer salvaged from a Heavy Raider ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I]]).

On Caprica, Thrace demonstrates a new level of trust for Valerii by throwing her a gun during a firefight with ambushing Centurions. Later, Valerii is as perplexed as everyone else when the Cylons disengage and apparently leave the planet for good. She ''is'' aware, however, that [[Cavil|Brother Cavil]], a man who approaches the group and loudly proclaims the end of the occupation to be a miracle, is a [[Cylon agent]]. She witholds this information from the others. On ''Galactica'', Cavil is exposed by Chief Tyrol (who realizes that a copy of Cavil was already present in the Fleet). Angered by Valerii's obvious withholding of Cavil's nature, Admiral Adama sends Valerii back to the brig along with Cavil. When asked by a distraught Helo why she didn't report this crucial fact, she replies "They killed my baby. Do you think I care about you, or us, or whether or not Adama trusts me anymore?" Valerii withdraws further, shutting Helo out completely. ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]).

==Trust==

Four months after ''Galactica's'' retreat brings many changes. Sharon Agathon (now married to Karl "Helo" Agathon") is still in her special brig, but Admiral Adama has apparently taken to sitting down to tea and talking in confidence with her. Her cell now has a couch, table, and other amenities.

As part of a plan to rescue the people of New Caprica, Admiral Adama decides to enlist Agathon into the Colonial Fleet as part of an insertion force that will serve as a liaison with a small weapons cache to aid in the resistance and form a plan. Agathon leads two Raptors in an intra-atmosphere Jump successfully and meets with [[Samuel Anders]] and his squad. Their planning is interrupted when an unknown number of [[Cylon Centurion]]s fire at the group ([[Precipice]]).

*This Sharon Valerii is still referred to as the Caprica copy, even though she is now on Galactica, because she was first encountered on Caprica. She is also sometimes called 'Helo-Sharon' by fans (as opposed to 'Tyrol-Sharon') or simply 'Sharon' (as opposed to 'Boomer', a nickname more commonly associated with Galactica-Sharon; although Baltar once called Caprica-Sharon "Boomer" in [[Home, Part II]], he is the only character to have done so).
*During Season 1, Caprica-Valerii parts her hair on the left side of her head, while "Boomer" Valerii parts her hair to the right.
*The emergency birth surgery performed on Valerii is known on the real-world Earth as a [[Wikipedia:Cesarean section|cesarean section]]. The term is derived from the name of Roman Emperor [[Wikipedia:Julius Caesar|Julius Caesar]], believed to have been birthed by this procedure. This term is not actually used in dialogue, although it is obvious that this procedure is the one in use. == Biography ==

Dualla's father thought that her enlistment in the [[Colonial Fleet|Colonial Fleet Reserve]] was crazy, and he viewed the military as a joke. She signed up anyway because she wanted to believe in something. This rift with her father would continue throughout her service and the last time they spoke they got in a heated argument; three weeks later the Cylons attacked, and Dualla never got a chance to reconcile with him ([[Final Cut]]).

At the time of the [[Cylon attack]] she monitors fleet-wide communications. Dualla is one of the first to notice the unusually-high levels of shipboard malfunctions and failures aboard other battlestars ([[Miniseries]]).

After the Cylon attack, she coordinates Fleet activities like [[FTL|jumps]] with Tactical Officer [[Felix Gaeta]]. In this responsibility, she discovers that the ''[[Olympic Carrier]]'' fails to Jump with the fleet after yet another Jump to escape a 5-day long, relentless attack by the Cylons after their escape from [[Ragnar Anchorage]] ([[33]]).

Due to his attraction to Dualla, presidential aide [[Billy Keikeya]] "volunteers" her to join an off-ship mission to the ''[[Astral Queen]]'' ([[Bastille Day]]). Led by Captain [[Lee Adama]], the mission is to attempt enlistment of prisoners aboard the ''Queen'' in resupplying ''Galactica'' with water following an act of sabotage ([[Water]]). During the mission, the team is taken hostage by prisoners during a jail break lead by fellow Sagittaron and political agitator [[Tom Zarek]].

Freed without personal harm during this situation, Dualla returns Billy Keikeya's affections, and they date during off-duty periods ([[Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down]]).

Dualla receives a minor concussion when Cylons board the ship ([[Valley of Darkness]]). Dualla aids in [[Laura Roslin]]'s escape from ''Galactica'' after the President's arrest by covering up the tracks of their secret communications coordinating their movements in the Fleet, and getting Colonel Tigh to sign permission to close off a causeway which they use as an escape route. At this time, Dualla seems to take a greater personal interest in [[Lee Adama|Apollo]] ([[Resistance (episode)|Resistance]]).

Dualla is assigned to give [[D'anna Biers]] a tour around the battlestar as part of Bier's documentary of the ship ([[Final Cut]]). Lee Adama seems to return Dualla's personal attraction during a sparring exercise with the petty officer ([[Flight of the Phoenix]]).

Dualla's [[avionics]] training helps in building a stable communications package for the experimental [[Blackbird]] fighter ([[Flight of the Phoenix]]).

Keikeya, apparently attempting to solidify his relationship with the petty officer, proposes to Dualla, but she refuses. Keikeya later sees Dualla with Lee Adama on ''[[Cloud 9]]'' and accuses her of leading him on. Shortly after Keikeya's accusation, four terrorists commander the lounge and its occupants in exchange for the surrender of [[Sharon Valerii (Caprica copy)|Sharon Valerii]]. When a ruse by Admiral [[William Adama]] is discovered, the [[Sesha Abinell|leader]] of the the terrorists orders Dualla's death. Keikeya intervenes and manages to shoot the terrorist, but the terrorist fatally wounds Keikeya before dying. Lee Adama is also left severely wounded from a friendly-fire incident during an abortive pre-assault reconnaisance led by [[Kara Thrace]]. Dualla promises to watch over Lee Adama until he recovers in [[sickbay]]. When he finally regained consciousness, Dualla was so happy that neither of them noticed Starbuck leaving the sickbay with a heartbroken expression ([[Sacrifice]]).

A few months later, still involved with Apollo, Dualla assists in the counting of ballots for the Presidential election. Dualla conspires with [[Tory Foster]] and [[Saul Tigh]] to rig the election in Roslins's favor, indicating that she comprehends the disaster that would follow if Baltar is elected. Though the plot initially succeeds, Lt. Gaeta's curiosity leads to Admiral Adama's discovery of the duplicity. Adama covers up the plot but returns the vote, for better or worse, to its actual result, with Baltar being elected to the Presidency.

A year later, Dualla serves as Communications and Executive Officer<ref name="podcast">{{cite rdm podcast| episode = Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II | act = 6 | id =xodee | timestamp = 00:09:36 | totalrunning = 00:17:49 }}</ref> on ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]'', part of its skeletal crew in orbit around [[New Caprica]]. *Dualla's counterpart in the [[Battlestar Galactica (TOS)|Original Series]] is [[Rigel]]. According to [[Ron Moore]]'s [http://www.scifi.com/battlestar/blogs/ blog entry] on April 18, 2006, Dualla is actually more or less directly inspired by Rigel, saying Dualla is "filling the role of another woman in the original BSG series who used to man the communication system on their bridge. That character was called "Rigel" but I didn't think that name worked in the remake, so I gave her the name of Dualla."
*Dualla was known throughout all of the first season and part of of the second season only as "Dualla" or "Dee". Her first name was finally revealed in the episode, "[[Final Cut]]" in an on screen caption during her documentary interview; her first name has yet to be spoken aloud.
