Would it be fair to say that the Mercury class is at least 12 years old, since Tyrol claimed to have served onboard battlestars such as the Atlantia, the Columbia and the Pegasus since he was 18? It could be that one or more of the ships he mentioned was still the Cylon War-1 battlestar, but considering that there were 120 battlestars by the time of Cylon War-2, and if Galactica was to be the last of her class, it'd seem likely that the Mercury class has been around for over a decade. --[[User:David Templar|David Templar]] 20:16, 15 October 2005 (EDT)

:Not a safe assumption. There could easily have been intervening ship classes between the original style and mercury class, and we don't know which order Tyrol served on each of those ships. The '''''Mercury'' class''' battlestar is an advanced warship introduced into the [[Colonial Fleet]] sometime after the First [[Cylon War]]. For the unnamed original class, to which ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]'' belongs, see [[Original Battlestar (RDM)]].

==Overview==

Following the end of the [[Cylon War]], the original battlestars remained in service, and other battlestars were built. Their numbers steadily increased to a grand total of 120 ships in the Colonial Fleet. New models employed technologies, such as networked computers, which had been prohibited during the war ([[Mini-Series]]). A ''Mercury''-class battlestar therefore sports several features not found aboard ''Galactica'' such as automated sliding doorways and basic computer recognition stations at vital areas. At the time of the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies]], a ''Mercury''-class battlestar was a top-of-the-line craft.

The physical appearance of the ''Mercury''-class is different than that of the original battlestar. The "neck" section is smaller, and the ''Mercury''-class is equipped with eight sublight engine pods, compared the older class's four. These are also more "boxy" in appearance than those of the original. The flight pods also appear to have two entrances each, above and below the midline. Unlike ''Galactica'', ''Pegasus'' appears to have a full armor "skin", but in ''Galactica's'' case this may have been deliberately removed prior to its decommissioning.

Based on figures from the episode "[[Pegasus (episode)|Pegasus]]", the standard crew complement of a Mercury-class battlestar is in excess of 2,500.

Also, in addition to having better armament and weapons than the [[Galactica]] the Mercury Class Battlestar is known to known to have the production means to build new Vipers from basic resources ([[Scar]]).

Would it be fair to say that the Mercury class is at least 12 years old, since Tyrol claimed to have served onboard battlestars such as the Atlantia, the Columbia and the Pegasus since he was 18? According to David Eick's video blog, it would have been impossible to afford creating new sets for the entire interior of the Pegasus on the budget of an episodic television show. This expense was circumvented when a year beforehand Ron D. Moore and David Eick bought (for next to nothing) the abandoned sets of the failed pilot for the FOX network's "Lost In Space" remake, directed by John Woo. The production team then held onto the sets hoping to find some later use for them, until later using them for the Pegasus. ''Pegasus'' is a [[Mercury-class]] [[battlestar]] that was stationed at the [[Scorpion Ship Yards]] during the [[Cylon attack]]. It survived when its commanding officer, Admiral [[Nelena Cain]], ordered a [[blind jump]] - but not before rescuing a number of the shipyard workers, including the [[Humano-Cylon]] agent [[Gina]]. Gina alerted the Cylons to the location of the ''Pegasus'', and the subsequent attack resulted in eight hundred of the crew's deaths. However, Gina was apprehended. Chief [[Tyrol]] mentioned during his interrogation by [[Saul Tigh|Colonel Tigh]] that he served aboard a number of Battlestars in his military career, including the ''Pegasus''. ("[[Resistance]]") Despite her familiarity with him, Admiral Cain had no reservations sentencing him and [[Helo|Karl Agathon]] to death when they inadvertently killed [[Thorne|Lieutenant Thorne]], Cain's chief Cylon interrogator. According to David Eick's video blog, it would have been impossible to afford creating new sets for the entire interior of the Pegasus on the budget of an episodic television show. This expense was circumvented when a year beforehand Ron D. Moore and David Eick bought (for next to nothing) the abandoned sets of the failed pilot for the FOX network's "Lost In Space" remake, directed by John Woo. The production team then held onto the sets hoping to find some later use for them, until later using them for the Pegasus. The sets were then radically redesigned and painted to give them the aesthetic look of the ''Galactica'', but sleeker and more advanced.

Pegasus was the second battlestar known to have survived the [[Cylon Attack]]. It was commanded by Commander [[Cain]], whom [[Viper|Viper]] pilots [[Bojay]] and [[Sheba]] served under. It was the only surviving ship from the [[Battle of Molecay]], meeting up with the [[Galactica|Galactica]] in [[The Living Legend, Part I (TOS)|The Living Legend]].

The military genius Cain lead the ship against two [[Cylon Basestar|Cylon Basestars]] to permit the [[Galactica]] and the Fleet to escape. The question of the survival of Cain and his battlestar was always in doubt, though it is generally assumed by the fandom that the ship survived.

Pegasus is derived from the Greek mythos. Pegasus was a winged horse-god who was the foal of Poseidon; this image of a winged horse is emblematic on the Helmet of Pegasus's [[Viper]] pilots in [[The Living Legend, Part I|The Living Legend]].
