D'anna Biers is known in The Fleet as a Colonial reporter for the Fleet News Service (Final Cut). Biers appears to be more of a tabloid rumor-and-innuendo format news journalist and less of the conventional Fleet journalist types such as James McManus.

Biers is investigating the shootings of four civilians during a military intervention authorized by Colonel Tigh in what she dubs for sensationalism's sake as the "Gideon massacre". Her efforts to interview Galactica's crew are constantly thwarted by military protocol and stonewalling by Commander Adama, who privately acknowledges Tigh's mistakes, but seems adamant not to render any punishment.

The social and political repercussions of the Gideon incident become too much for President Laura Roslin to ignore. The citizens of the Fleet are becoming critical of Galactica and wonder if the military places itself at a different level of self-responsibility than its citizens. Working with Commander Adama, President Roslin invites Biers aboard Colonial One and proposes something interesting to the reporter. Adama and Roslin will give Biers "unlimited" access to Galactica and her crew to create a documentary on what it is like to be the last defensive group of the Twelve Colonies, as well as allowing her to interview many of the crew on the Gideon incident.

Biers' is initially given a tour of the battlestar by Petty Officer Anastasia Dualla, but finds the nuts-and-bolts technology and layout information boring. She and her photographer, Bell, prefer to record and interview the candid moments of Galactica's crew--even going so far as entering the senior pilot's quarters, where a scantily-clad Lee Adama finds the intrusion most unwelcome.

Biers begins in-depth personal interviews with many of the crew, including Dualla, Lieutenants Gaeta, Margaret Edmonson, Kara Thrace and Karl Agathon, as well as attempts to interview command staff such as Colonel Tigh. Of all the interviews, she desperately wants to ask Tigh many questions on his decisions in the Gideon incident, but Tigh stonewalls and evades her questions, partially from his annoyance in the situation, but also because he is distracted by a mysterious death threat left in his quarters: a verse of a poem from a Caprican poet known as Kataris.

Biers appears to be in the right place at the wrong times throughout her documentary filming. She captures the growing behavioral problems with Lieutenant Louanne Katraine, a Viper pilot who later crash-lands her Viper after failing a routine landing and is found to have been abusing stims because of the pressures she endures from the loss of her family and friends as well as the demands of being a Viper pilot. Biers also captures the sabotage to a Raptor that was intended to shuttle Colonel Tigh to Cloud Nine for some downtime for the colonel as well as a bit of business on orders of Commander Adama.

As Biers passes through sickbay during her documentary, she makes a highly unusual find. Sharon Valerii is alive and being treated in sickbay. The existence of this second copy of the known Cylon infiltrator, who was thought to be dead by The Fleet, is too much for Biers not to document. However, Commander Adama intercepts Biers and demands that she give him the intriguing footage of Valerii. Biers pointedly asks why Adama is harboring this known Cylon in secret aboard the ship, and suggests that news of Valerii's existence could ruin Adama in the eyes of the Fleet. Adama evades the question and redirects it at Biers, asking whether exposure of this second Valerii's existence to the Fleet would do anyone any good. She surrenders a tape to Adama, but unknown to him, Biers retains the actual footage of Valerii in secret for herself.

Biers gets an opportunity to document what happens in CIC during a Cylon Raider raid at the Fleet.

As Biers is editing the documentary, reviewing the footage from the senior pilot's quarters, she sees Joe Palladino on his bunk with a copy of a book by Kataris. Biers' knowledge of Palladino's involvement in the Gideon incident immediately determines that Palladino is the likely suspect in the death threats. She and Bell grab their photo gear and rush to Tigh's quarters to find that Palladino has bound Tigh's wife, Ellen and threatens to shoot Colonel Tigh with a sidearm. Tigh manages to talk the agitated lieutenant down and disarm him, where marines take the wayward Viper pilot away.

Bier's final documentary is reviewed by Tigh, Adama, and President Roslin. While Tigh is initially perturbed at the documentary's unshiny look into Colonial military life, Adama finds it a good story, "warts and all." The documentary is broadcast to the Fleet, with Biers concluding the documentary with a rousing monologue:

:"I came to Galactica to tell a story. In all honesty, I thought I knew what that story was before I ever set foot here. How an arrogant military let their egos get in the way of doing their job safeguarding the lives of the civilian population. But I found the truth was more complex than that. These people aren't Cylons. They're not robots blindly following orders and polishing their boots. They're people. Deeply flawed, yes, but deeply human too. And maybe that's saying the same thing. What struck me the most is that despite it all: the hardships, the stress, the ever-present danger of being killed-- despite all that, they never give up. Never lie down in the road and let the truck run them over. They wake up in the morning, put on their uniforms, and do their jobs. Every day, no pay. No rest. No hope of ever laying down the burden and letting someone else do the job. There are no relief troops coming, no Colonial fleet training new recruits every day. The people on Galactica are it. They are the thin line of blue separating us from the Cylons.

:"Lieutenant Gaeta told me a remarkable statistic. Not a single member of Galactica's crew has asked to resign. Not one. Think about that. If you wore the uniform, wouldn't you want to quit? To step aside and say, "Enough. Let someone else protect the Fleet." I know I would. But then, I don't wear a uniform. Most of us don't, most of us never will. The story of Galactica isn't that people make bad decisions under pressure. It's that those mistakes are the exception. Most of the time, the men and women serving under Commander Adama get it right. The proof is that our fleet survives. And with Galactica at our side, we will endure. This is D'anna Biers, Fleet News Service."

But the Fleet is not the only group that sees the documentary. A group of humanoid Cylons on Caprica--copies of Aaron Doral, Number Six, another Sharon Valerii copy and one other person, hidden from view initially in the theater where they sit, watch Biers' documentary (including, surprisingly, the footage of the Sharon Valerii copy in sickbay that Adama had presumably confiscated) with great interest. The Valerii copy chuckles in surprise at the survival of her pregnant doppleganger on Galactica, and the others are very intent on monitoring the pregnancy and survival of the Cylon/human hybrid fetus. The mysterious 4th person in the theater is revealed: a second copy of D'anna Biers, which notes that the Raiders that intercepted Galactica were used to relay the documentary and its forbidden footage of Valerii from themselves to a nearby Cylon fleet for transmission to Caprica, at the price of some loss of Cylon material.

Notes
*D'anna Biers is one of two Cylon agents revealed in Season 2 so far. Her ultimate goals may have originally been to turn the civilians against Galactica, but this plan may have been later abandoned. Her current goal seems to be to keep tabs on Caprica-Valerii, being held in Galactica's brig.
*Since Biers has not appeared in past episodes that feature the fleet-wide press, it can be speculated that prior to the Cylon Attack, she was more of a tabloid investigative reporter than a mainstream journalist.
*Biers' existence as a Cylon infiltrator brings the total number of revealed models to six as of "Final Cut". This leaves six unknown models as of this episode. Speculation on other characters and their true identities as Colonials or Cylon infiltrators is still ongoing.
*In behind the scenes interviews, Lucy Lawless has said that to contrast her character with Galactica's crew, D'Anna still wears fashionable clothes, make up, and jewelry, probably because she has access to some form of black market in the Fleet.
*Lucy Lawless has stated that she will return as D'anna in 10 episodes of season 3 (fully half of the 20 episode season, though they might be interspersed throughout the season).
*Lucy Lawless' more renowned TV character, Xena, originates from Amphipolis; an actual village situated between Greek provinces Macedonia and Thrace. See also Kara Thrace entry.
*At the official Xena 2006 Convention, Lucy Lawless stated that:

Lieutenant Karl C. Agathon was the ECO aboard Raptor 478, piloted by Lt. Sharon "Boomer" Valerii. He is young, loyal, capable, resourceful and attracted to Valerii. Those aboard Galactica seem to find his real name cumbersome or unwieldy. He's almost always addressed by his callsign, "Helo."

Biography
At the time of the Cylon Attack Lt. Karl Agathon, serial number PK-789-934, is on patrol in Valerii's Raptor flying with battlestar Galactica's last fully-operational Viper squadron, and witnesses the destruction of the squadron by Cylon Raiders, after the latter exploits the Command Navigation Program to disable the Vipers.

Following the attack, Agathon and Valerii attempt to return to Galactica, avoiding Cylon patrols, but are unsuccessful: their Raptor is damaged in a Cylon missile strike, and Helo receives a wound in his leg from shrapnel that pierces their ship. As a result of the damage received, the Raptor is forced down on Caprica, where Valerii makes emergency repairs. Moments after Valerii's repairs, their ship is mobbed by civilians desperate to get off the planet.

With limited space for survivors aboard the Raptor, Agathon volunteers his seat to Dr. Gaius Baltar and remains on Caprica in the hope that Baltar would be of benefit to the Colonials in their renewed fight against the Cylons. Both Helo and Boomer felt that there was no chance that he would survive the Cylon nuclear attack on Caprica, but he selflessly chooses to stay behind anyway, giving up his own life so Baltar could get to Galactica.

Marooned
After Boomer's departure, Helo apparently separates from the surviving refugees and flees from Cylon ground forces. After six days on Caprica, surviving on anti-radiation medications from his survival pack, he is captured after noticing a version of the Cylon known (secretly only to Gaius Baltar) as Number Six.

Helo is "rescued" by a copy of Sharon Valerii, unaware that this Sharon is a copy and not the one who abandoned him on Caprica. She guides him across Caprica as part of an elaborate (if potentially hastily-conceived) plan / experiment designed to make this second Valerii the object of Agathon's affections. Several situations are engineered to make this happen:

*A "honey trap" offering reasonably-secure accommodations (a "fall-out shelter") together with sufficient supplies for two people beneath a restaurant (Act of Contrition)
*Engineering Valerii's capture to test Helo's loyalty towards her (You Can't Go Home Again / Litmus)
*Establishing a further (long-term) "honey trap" for Helo and Valerii in the wilderness of Caprica.

However, the Cylon plan goes awry when Valerii appears to fall in love with Agathon. She forces them both on the run once more, this time genuinely seeking to escape from Caprica via the military base at Delphi, now under Cylon control.

During their attempts to reach Delphi, Agathon witnesses a troop of Cylon Centurions being lead by Number Six - the woman he thought he had killed when Valerii rescued him. This draws him to the conclusion that the Cylons are using human clones they have created (Colonial Day). Once at Delphi, Agathon receives another shock: not only are further versions of Six on-hand - he comes face-to-face with another Valerii copy, revealing the full truth about the woman known as "Boomer" to him. Believing he was lured into a trap, Agathon goes on the run, leaving Valerii at the base.

The Valerii copy that Helo has paired with later catches up with him, and while he shoots her in the arm, he does not kill her as she might be of use to him in escaping the planet. Caprica-Valerii then informs Helo that she is pregnant with his child, and that they should go to the Delphi Museum. There, Agathon is reunited with Kara "Starbuck" Thrace (who just arrived from Galactica using a stolen Cylon Raider) immediately after she kills a copy of Number Six and retrieves the Arrow of Apollo. Thrace, realizing immediately that Valerii is a Cylon (knowing much earlier than Helo that Cylons can mimic human form) tries to kill Valerii, but Agathon stops her because she is pregnant ("Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II", "Scattered").

Valerii runs away out of fear of Thrace, taking her Cylon Raider. Fearing that Number Six would finish transferring her consciousness to a new body and warn the Cylons about the humans' presence in Delphi, Agathon and Thrace make their way to Thrace's old apartment ("Scattered", "Valley of Darkness"). Later, Thrace and Agathon join up with the human resistance on Caprica (Resistance).

The Resistance and Escape from Caprica
Agathon, Anders and others later rescue Thrace from the Cylons' "hospital". Valerii returns to aid Helo in locating the missing Thrace, and later saves the day by gunning down several Centurions in a stolen Heavy Raider. Helo, Thrace, and Valerii leave Caprica en route to the Fleet (The Farm). The group lands on the Astral Queen, which has broken off from the rest of the Fleet (Home, Part I). When Lee Adama grabs the new copy of Valerii and threatens to shoot her, Helo raises his gun at Lee's head in response. They are calmed by Roslin, who then orders Valerii thrown out of an airlock. Valerii convinces Roslin of her usefulness before this happens, and later accompanies Helo and others to Kobol to find the Tomb of Athena (Home, Part I). On the way to the Tomb of Athena, Apollo remarks to Starbuck that he is disquieted that Helo and this Valerii copy love each other, and Helo admits to Valerii that he now loves and trusts her. When they finally reach the tomb, Commander Adama orders Helo to stay outside with Valerii and Tom Zarek while Chief Tyrol guards all of them. With the successful gathering of information on the whereabouts of Earth, Helo and the group return to Galactica and the reunified Fleet.

Home on Galactica
Helo's welcome-home to Galactica, months after being declared KIA on Caprica (Home, Part II), isn't a generally warm one. Many in the crew find his romance with the Caprica Valerii disquieting or disgusting. A few crew warm up to Helo after his suggestion of using carbon composites on the new fighter, the Blackbird, which turns Tyrol's pet project into a significant stealth technology (Flight of the Phoenix).

Chief Tyrol is still nursing the loss of Boomer (the Galactica copy of Valerii that left Helo on Caprica and later shoots Commander Adama), and now deals the return of another Valerii, her "memories" of him, and the fact that Helo is romantically involved with her. The friction between Helo and Tyrol becomes too much and a fight ensues before both realize that doing so would gain them little. The two tacitly appear to accept the awkward situation for what it was.

Helo and Tyrol learn of the gang-rape of the captured Cylon on battlestar Pegasus, and are shocked to learn that the "Cylon interrogator", Lieutenant Alistair Thorne, would be "interrogating" the incarcerated Valerii that day. Helo is prepared to fight the drunken Pegasus crewmembers for essentially being disrespectful, but Tyrol convinces him to head to the brig to aid Valerii instead. While successful in stopping the assault, the two are arrested and taken to Pegasus when Thorne is accidentally killed. Admiral Helena Cain conducts summary courts-martial on the two Galactica crewmembers, finding them guilty and slating them for execution. When Commander Adama hears of this abrupt treatment, he launches a Raptor with Marine units as well as his Viper squadrons to get Helo and Tyrol back. A standoff ensues, with not only Helo's life in the balance, but thousands of others in the Fleet (Pegasus).

Aboard the Pegasus
After Starbuck returned with images of the Resurrection Ship, Adama and Cain agreed to a truce. Helo and Tyrol were given a stay of execution, but not a pardon. While they were imprisoned aboard the Pegasus, a pair of deck hands, irate about Thorne's death, assaulted them. Jack Fisk, the XO of the Pegasus, put a stop to this by citing regulations, but rebuffed Helo's thanks. Like the deck crew, Fisk had been saved from death by Thorne, and he was not sympathetic to Valerii, whom he viewed as a machine.

After the destruction of the Resurrection Ship and the death of Admiral Cain, Fisk became Commander of the Pegasus. He returned Helo and Tyrol to the Galactica, where the former was joyfully received by Boomer.

The Events of Epiphanies
Things got ugly when the dying President Roslin ordered the hybrid baby aborted. Helo attempted to dissuade Adama from carrying out the order in private conversation in the Admiral's office, but failed. When Boomer was being brought to the medical bay for the abortion, Helo blocked the door with his hand on his pistol. He offered to take Boomer aboard a Raptor and leave the Fleet, but was rebuffed by Adama, who told him, "You're a soldier." Helo retorted that he was a father, like Adama.

Fortunately, Baltar defused a potentially violent incident by arriving with his report on the medically-useful nature of the hybrid fetus. The consequences from this action remain to be seen.

Notes
Name
The new Battlestar Galactica plays heavily on Greek mythology / history (the Olympian Gods, use of names such as Delphi, etc.). Therefore it might be interesting to note that "Agathon" may be derived from Agathos Daemon - meaning good spirit, one of the group of spirits (daemons) that lie between the gods and mortals. Also, the name Helo bears some similarity to Helios/Helius, the greek god of the sun. Helo is also slang for helicopter, and the Raptor craft Helo and Boomer fly is fashioned after a US Army helicopter.

Character
Helo's full name (or even his fate) wasn't revealed until "33". He was initially intended as an expendable character; originally he was supposed to have actually died when the Raptor had to leave him behind on Caprica. Penikett's performance in the mini-series convinced TPTB otherwise. Curiously, Helo's second replacement on "Boomer" Valerii's Raptor, Racetrack, was also intended as a one-shot character, but was retained by TPTB for similar reasons as Penikett's character and his performance.
Overview
When two Raptors go missing after a training mission, new Pegasus commander Barry Garner challenges Admiral Adama's orders by sending his battlestar directly into the rescue zone--and a trap.

Summary
*Two Raptors begin a training mission outside Pegasus, which is near a binary star, causing DRADIS and communications interference. In the C.I.C., the Raptors disappear from DRADIS, the Comm officer believing that they may be in distress.

*On Galactica, Chief Tyrol and the deck crew are in the process of unloading containers, Tyrol finds a pregnant teenager who asks for Dr. Cottle.

*Lee Adama arrives on the battlestar Pegasus, where he runs into Kara Thrace. Lee has been promoted to Major, and both report to Commander Garner in the C.I.C. Garner is quick to chew out now-Captain Thrace over the disapperance of the Raptors.

*Commander Garner and Major Adama talk in private about the discipline on Pegasus. Garner thinks that Starbuck is a huge part of the problem, but Adama defends her, citing her excellent piloting skills. Garner thinks that the virtues learned in his experience as an engineer would do the ship some good.

*On Colonial One, President Roslin is being hounded by her new aide, Tory Foster, about preparing for the coming election. Elsewhere, Tom Zarek discusses the idea of presidency, however concedes he's not able to garner support, but is willing to support someone more scientific: Dr. Baltar.

*Back on Galactica, Dr. Cottle & Admiral Adama discuss the fate of the young woman found in the container, Rya. Rya mentions the fact that she doesn't want to keep the baby, but Admiral Adama (upon request from the Gemenese delegate) is intent on sending her back to her family. Dr. Cottle suggests that she request asylum aboard Galactica.

*News of Rya's asylum request has raised a stir amongst the Fleet. President Roslin discusses the issue with Admiral Adama, Tory Foster, and Delegate Sarah Porter from Gemenon. Delegate Porter mentions that the abortion is a obscenity and demands that the girl be returned to her parents. Officially, President Roslin responds by saying the asylum request is under review. Afterwards, President Roslin mentions she's not willing to even consider the idea of abortion. She eventually announces to the fleet an Executive Order making abortion by mother or doctor subject to criminal arrest.

*While reviewing the last transmissions from the Raptors, Starbuck makes a startling discovery, in that the reason for the disappearance may be the result of answering a supposed distress call. She attempts to bring this up with Commander Garner, who flatly rejects the theory.

*At the last known position, the additional search parties learn of the distress call that lured the first Raptors away. Commander Garner decides to start preparing the Pegasus for jump.

*Over wireless, Commander Garner, Major Adama, and Admiral Adama discuss the missing raptor situation. Commander Garner feels that the Pegasus should jump to bring home the missing crews and ships. When the Admiral asks Lee if he concurs, Lee discusses Starbuck's theory that the raptor were drawn into a Cylon trap. Admiral Adama is inclined to agree with the Major and Starbuck, and orders a recon mission to ascertain the fate of the two raptors. Garner is furious over the decision, and orders Major Adama off the C.I.C.

*Garner decides to make the jump regardless of Adama's orders. Raptors are launched from Pegasus towards the now located raptors, only to find both Raptor crews dead. At that moment, three Basestar jump into view which begin attacking Pegasus with conventional and nuclear missile barrages seconds after their arrival.

*During the course of the assault, Pegasus's FTL drive is disabled. Garner attempts to determine the cause from C.I.C., but is unable to do so due to the confusion of the Engineering crew. Commander Garner decides to head down to the engine room to ascertain the damage, and transfers command of Pegasus to Major Adama. Adama, after a moment of hesitation, swings into action, ordering Pegasus into the fray, closing with one of the Basestars and engaging it with the forward batteries, severely damaging the Cylon ship.

*Through Garner's successful repair of their FTL system, Pegasus manages to jump away. Commander Garner, however, dies in the process from vaccum exposure, as the chamber he was in had a slow-leaking hull breach.

*In Admiral Adama's quarters, the Admiral and Major Adama review the reports from the incident on Pegasus. After pointing out that Lee was more forgiving of the late Commander than Starbuck was, Admiral Adama asks what Garner's fatal flaw was. Lee responds that Garner was accustomed to working with machines, but that command is about people. The Admiral asks Lee to keep that in mind, as he offers Lee the job of commanding Pegasus, along with a promotion to Commander.

*Gaius Baltar proclaims his candidacy for President of the Colonies in the Presidential election in the midst of a press conference called by President Roslin regarding abortion in the Fleet.

Questions
*Would Adama allow Dr. Cottle to be arrested? From the episode, he is of the opinion that he would do what is necessary.
**Given that Cottle is the only real doctor left in the fleet, Adama may be hesitant to take such an action.
***This idea is supported by Cottle's behavior toward officers: Adama is the only one to whom he shows even marginal respect.
**Are there no doctors on Pegasus? If Cain had a large civilian fleet to recruit from, it is likely that she would have drafted some doctors into service.
*Was Baltar's report real, or was it just invented to produce the opportunity to drive his wedge?
**With the constant Cylon attacks to the Fleet (barring the unexpected return of Pegasus) the population is almost always declining, as noted by Admiral Adama.
*Who will replace Baltar as Roslin's Vice President?
**Can Roslin actually pick another Vice President, under Colonial law, if Baltar refuses to resign? One of the reporters at the end actually directly asked if Baltar would remain as Vice President. Perhaps Roslin cannot forcibly remove Baltar from his office just because he's running aginst her.
***If Colonial law works similarly to American political protocol, Baltar was elected in his own right. For example, George Bush cannot force Dick Cheney to resign, only Mr. Cheney himself can elect to resign. Interestingly, 204 years ago, US President John Adams faced a similar situation: His own Vice-President, Thomas Jefferson, plotted Adams' political downfall.
*How will Zarek position himself in the Baltar campaign?
**It is likely that Zarek hopes to become Vice President himself.
***Does Zarek plan to have Baltar killed, as per his plan in "Colonial Day"?
****Zarek actually seems willing to make a beneficial alliance with Baltar, which Roslin would never agree to.
****Baltar may be a political novice but he's no fool; he would spot that a mile away. In fact, Baltar specifically asks Zarek what he (Zarek) would want in return. Zarek gave a diplomatic answer rather than openly ask for the VP slot.
*Will Tigh accept the fact that Lee Adama now outranks him and has command of a ship? Or does Saul have no interest in command and already told Admiral Adama that before the posting was offered to Lee?
**As mentioned in "Scattered," Col. Tigh was never really interested in commanding a battlestar.
***Fleet protocols, as in the real-world US Navy and other naval services around the globe, would require Tigh, as the senior officer to take command, as he did when Adama was incapacitated.
****This is true for an intra-ship command structure, but if other qualified officers were available, Col. Tigh probably had the privilege to pass up the command of Pegasus, citing XO's prerogative (or something similar).
*What will happen to Rya, now that she had been granted asylum on Galactica?
*Why was Lee promoted straight from Major to Commander? Can a Colonel not be placed in command of a battlestar for long-term purposes?
**No. Colonel Jack Fisk was promoted to Commander of Pegasus before his death. It appears to be something of a rank nomenclature formality, as Garner was promoted up from being head of engineering. Compare to the established terminology convention on Star Trek for always referring to the commanding officer of a ship as "Captain", even if that officer does not hold that specific rank.
***The use of "captain" is done in real life as well. In the US Navy, a person in the command of a vessel is referred to as "Captain" even if his actual rank is Lieutenant Commander, Ensign or even if he/she is a Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO).
*Had Garner been serving as XO to Pegasus's previous commander, the late Jack Fisk?
*Does the fact that the Cylons had such a large force waiting to ambush Pegasus indicate that they have a new Resurrection Ship in place?
**Given that there were three basestars in wait, it is more likely that the Cylons opted on surprise and sheer numbers to succeed. Still, Pegasus caused one basestar to retreat, despite being outnumbered. It is likely that the lack of a Resurrection Ship resulted in the basestar's retreat.
**Before, the Cylons were confident in making a frontal assault on a battlestar with a single basestar, in "Scattered", etc. They are markedly less confident now.
*How does the double layer flight pod system on Pegasus operate? Just before the battlestar jumps away from the ambush, there is a short sequence of Vipers returning to the ship that shows them landing on two distinct levels of the flight pod, with Vipers landing on the lower level being upside down with respect to Pegasus. Both the Colonials and Cylons obviously have some form of artifical gravity on their spacecraft, so this explains why such an arrangement is possible.
**For more on the use of artificial gravity, see the article, Science in the Re-imagined Series.
*How could abortion be legal and established throughout the colonies despite being against the religious views of at least one planet? Was it introduced only recently?
**Abortion may have been illegal or tightly-curtailed on that one planet. How much power did the Colonial political structure give to individual planets or smaller geographic areas?
***On present day Earth, there are several countries which have legalized abortion, but which have fundamentalist internal regions/cultural subgroups which frown upon it. The Twelve Colonies were ruled by a federal system, not a loose confederation adhering to princiles of States' Rights, etc.; the majority view in the federal government could probably enforce such laws on member worlds.
*What kind of equipment is available to fix small breaches such as the one in the "Pegasus" Engine room?
** Helo uses a hand-held pressure pad to seal a minor breach in the damaged Raptor during the Miniseries right after he recives his leg wound. Would such a device not help here?
***Maybe not all hull breaches are small enough to fix that way.
***There may not have been time to patch it, the ship was under heavy fire and could be destroyed at any moment; Restoring the FTL drive was the priority.

Analysis
*When Baltar announces his candidacy for the Presidency, Number Six applauds with a slow clap. This action runs in parallel to how then-Commander William Adama led the entire crew in a long, drawn-out slow clap in respect of President Roslin when she was re-instated to her office in "Home, Part II".
*Survivor count is decremented by six from "Sacrifice", but seven people died in that episode - terrorists Sesha Abinell, Vinson, Page and Chu, two unnamed marines, and civilian Billy Keikeya. At least one birth must have taken place to offset the population count between the two episodes.
*Based on the Colonial One whiteboard seen toward the end of the episode, only five people died as a result of the ambush on Pegasus: Richard "Buster" Bayer, Lyla "Shark" Ellway, the unnamed crew of Raptor 314, and Commander Barry Garner.
**This casualty figure is conspicuously low, considering that Galactica lost 85 crewmen as the result of a hit by a single nuclear missile in the miniseries, while Pegasus is hit with no less than three in this episode.
**On the other hand, it is at least consistent with the surprisingly low number of casualties incurred in the Battle of the Resurrection Ship, and may indicate that the hull armor on Pegasus is significantly stronger than on Galactica, which has many conspicuously bare structural ribs.
**There may be two further explanations for this (1) that the board hadn't been updated to reflect the damage on the Pegasus, only the pilots lost. (2) A large number of the Galactica casualties were caused by the decision to vent the spreading fire rather than from the actual impact of the missile.
*In the course of this episode's timeline, Lee Adama rises from the rank of Captain (CAG of Galactica) to Major (No details are given on that posting except Adama was assigned to Pegasus), to Commander and CO of Pegasus in the wake of Commander Barry Garner's death saving his ship.
**Major Adama's duty was intended as a temporary stint as Pegasus acting XO, to familiarize himself with the duties of a senior officer. In the opening scene, he tells Anastasia Dualla that he expects to return to Galactica "in a couple of weeks".
*Garner's decision to mount a rescue operation in contravention of his commanding officer's orders is an explicit parallel to "Pegasus", down to the choice of words:
:Adama: "I'm getting my men."
:Garner: "I'm going to get our men."
*Kara Thrace's posting is finally clarified in this episode: she is now serving as CAG on Galactica.
**She was transferred to Pegasus in "Pegasus" and then promoted to that ship's CAG over Cole "Stinger" Taylor in "Resurrection Ship, Part I". In "Epiphanies", it is made clear that Lee Adama regained his posting as Galactica's CAG. In "Epiphanies", Thrace is seen piloting one of Galactica's Mk. II Vipers with Kat; in "Scar" she is serving on Galactica, and appears to have assumed the majority of Adama's responsibilities as CAG, although she still takes orders from him.
**During this episode it's mentioned that she's only been on board Pegasus for four days before getting thrown in the brig, so clearly she isn't Pegasus's CAG any longer. Thus, despite the great esteem Cain held her in (she was the second speaker at Cain's funeral, after Jack Fisk), it seems clear that she was removed from her position on Pegasus sometime after Cain's death.

Notes
*Timeline-wise, Baltar says that he made an initial projection of the fleet's population "over seven months ago". This would have been before the arrival of Pegasus, since he said he factored in the arrival of her crew subsequently.
*Baltar states that he added the crew of the Pegasus into his calculations, with the result of the end of the human race within 18 years at current attrition rates.
*It has been "almost a month" since Apollo was shot in "Sacrifice".
*The recap at the beginning of this episode includes two scenes that did not actually appear in any previous episode, but were constructed by redubbing existing footage.
**The scene where Colonel Tigh and Admiral Adama discuss Garner's promotion is constructed from the scene in "Black Market" when Adama and Tigh are telling Apollo to go to Pegasus on the hangar deck. The scene has been cleverly redubbed, so that Adama is saying entirely new lines when the camera is pointed at Tigh (not at Adama's face), and then Tigh says new lines when the camera is pointed at Adama.
**The same technique is used when Baltar is talking to Gina: when the camera is pointed at Baltar, we hear Gina saying "You must betray Roslin and run for President in the upcoming election", but this was never heard in the aired version of "Epiphanies".
*Capt. Cole "Stinger" Taylor is still onboard Pegasus, mentioned by Capt. Thrace as being in the brig for insubordination.
*The adjectival form of "Gemenon" is "Gemenese".
*Under Gemenese law, minors are the "property" of their parents.
*Mercury class battlestars do not need to retract their flight pods prior to a jump, unlike the Galactica type.
*The coolant pressure gauges on Pegasus measure in PSI, presumably Pound-force per square inch. This is consistant with the use of customary units on the Viper Mk. II's Altimeter, seen in "Act of Contrition".
*This is the fourth episode of the season in which Grace Park has not appeared as Sharon Valerii.
*Writer Jeff Vlaming references Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice" when he has Laura Roslin tell Quorum of Twelve delegate Sarah Porter, "you have your pound of flesh".

Noteworthy Dialogue
*Following the Cylon ambush of Pegasus and the death of Commander Garner
:Admiral Adama: In your opinion, off the record, what was Garner's flaw?
:Major Lee Adama: He was used to working with machines. Command is about people.
:Admiral Adama: Remember that, as you take command of "The Beast" (Pegasus). Garner was my decision; His failures, my responsibility. Don't let me fail a second time. Congratulations, Commander.

*Responding to President Roslin's decision to criminalize abortion:
:Vice-President Baltar: It is true in the light of recent events, the President may have lost support in some quarters. I would ask the people to understand that if this is an extreme decision, we live in extreme times. The decision has been made with good faith. I, however, cannot with good conscience support it. I am so sorry, Madame President, but the Cylon have no understanding the meaning of the word "freedom". How could they? They're programmed...machines. Every time you take away one of our freedoms, every time we restrict or curtail one of our rights, we become one step closer to being like them. As the Vice-President, I am bound to follow the administration's lead; As President, I should have no such strictures. Given the current situation, I'm afraid that I have no alternative but to announce that I am, as of now, a candidate for the Presidency.

: For Centurions from the original series, refer to: Cylon Centurion Model 0005.

The basic unit of Cylon ground forces, the Cylon Centurion appears to be an upgrade to the Cylon Centurion Model 0005. They have long, needlelike fingers with multiple joints and have a double barreled automatic projectile weapon mounted on the end of each arm. These newer, fiercer Centurions are capable of moving extremely fast via bipedal locomotion. The projectile guns built into each arm are so powerful that they make counterattacks very difficult by Colonials since the barrage is, in effect, much like a gatling gun. Unlike the Model 0005, a single Centurion of the reimagined series is more than enough to terrorize a squad of Colonial fighters.

The Cylon Centurions may also have different armors. For instance, a small number of them wreaked havoc when boarding Galactica, and could only be destroyed using explosive rounds (Valley of Darkness).

Centurions encountered on Caprica reacted more slowly, acted less intelligently, and were more easily destroyed by small arms fire. This may be due to the Cylons' plans for Helo and the copy of Sharon Valerii with him; killing them would render their experiments worthless. A similiar group of Centurions found on Kobol during the episode Fragged were equally less individually intelligent. It may be that these Centurions are very simple soldiers that, despite their menacing statistics, are limited in their evolution and programming. Centurians are not sentient, and are not downloaded upon destruction.

It seems that the Cylon collective prefers not to use these Centurions in large-scale encounters, despite their obvious effectiveness. This may be because the Humano-Cylon models are more manipulative by way of psychology and terrorism and, frankly, prefer to play with their prey before striking it down by whatever means they have at their disposal.

Notes
*RDM said in a blog entry on January 20th, 2006, that "the Centurions are not sentient and their memories/experiences are not downloaded into new bodies when they die".

Cinematic Notes
The creators of the reimagined series decided that using actors in an elaborate Cylon robot outfit (as was done in the Original Series) would detract from the realism of the series. They decided to make fully computer-generated Cylon Centurions for the new series.

Inaugural director Michael Rymer wanted the new Cylon warrior to blend in and avoid detracting from the live actor's performances. However, the new designs were eye-catching, and the new robot became a popular addition to many scenes. The virtual Cylons are designed with full articulation in the hands and joints that gives a realistic appearance to the viewer. Initially the new warrior was built with more human movement, such as swaggering. However, the movements did not fit the robotic attitude that the writers wanted to convey and were later discarded.

Actors interact with a life-size cardboard stand-in when filming a scene that will later have virtual Cylon warriors inserted.
Overview
:After Cylon Raiders ram the Galactica on destructive suicide missions, the crew scrambles to fight a raging fire threatening to incinerate the ship.

Summary
* Lieutenant Boomer enters Galactica's rejuvenation center to relax and unwind with Athena and Boxey, who are playing a shuffleboard-type game (Boxey is winning); Boomer is on furlon from duty for the next 24 centars.
* Boxey tells Boomer that he has trained Muffit to "sniff" out mushies (edible treats for daggits).
* Suddenly, a loud siren begins to blare, and red alarm lights flash throughout the ship. On the bridge, Colonel Tigh informs Commander Adama of incoming Cylon forces, possibly from a basestar they encountered 10 centars ago; Blue Squadron is launched.
* As Tigh and Adama study the scanner, they come to realize that they are facing a major attack rather than a mere combat probe; all squadrons are launched, and the Galactica's compartments are sealed to protect against a hull breach.
* The Vipers engage a huge number of Cylon Raiders, which are not fighting back. The Vipers are destroying Raiders at will in numerous quantities, but two Raiders slip through the rain of Viper fire.
* One Raider heads toward the Galactica's bridge, which closes its protective shield in defense. Apollo and Sheba close in and appear to destroy the Raider with laser fire; however, the destruction of the Raider occurs too close to the bridge, which suffers heavy damage, suffering explosions, fallen girders, and shattered glass.
* Adama, nearly unconscious, lies motionless on the floor of the bridge; Tigh finds him and orders Omega to bring Dr. Salik immediately.
* Starbuck tries but fails to destroy the other suicidal Raider; it successfully rams the Galactica's port landing bay, causing massive explosions and damage throughout the ship, including the rejuvenation center.
* Boomer extinguishes a small fire and then attempts to restore communications, while Athena and Boxey tend to the wounded.
* Tigh believes the Cylon fighters were packed with solonite or a similar explosive; boroton has been used to extinguish the fire on the bridge, but they have lost "deep scan" and internal communications. They decide to use the Viper pilots as their "scanners", so they begin rotating squadrons to maintain a constant patrol.
* The damage report is grim: not only was energizer #1 destroyed, but so was the boroton mist control center (the main firefighting system aboard the Galactica). Also, fires rage out of control on numerous decks throughout their crippled vessel.
* Smoke begins pouring into the rejuvenation center from the damaged doorway, but the lifemasks were destroyed in the initial impact. The stranded occupants move to the "safe" side of the room, while Boomer begins trying to hotwire the door to the storage compartment.
* Apollo visits a gravely injured Adama, who needs an emergency medical procedure that is quite risky, given the Galactica's fragile state.
* After several attempts, Boomer finally succeeds in opening the door. The trapped crew members crowd safely through the door to (temporary) safety; Boomer dives through the hatchway just as the outer door succumbs to the raging fire outside.
* Apollo studyies the Galactica's schematics to find a way to reach his stranded sister and son; a small duct (part of the ship's intricate ventilation system) connects the bridge to the rest of the ship, including the rejuvenation center, but the accessway is too small for a person to negotiate.
* Tigh's first and foremost priority is putting out the fire threatening the ship. Apollo suggests firing boroton into the launch bay from a modified version of Viper laser turrets, while the Fire Captain thinks of a new way to use the megapressure pumps in connjunction with the firefighting equipment.
* Boomer, who has found their end of the small accessway, affixes a help note to Muffit; Boxey order the mechanized daggit into the tunnel to seek help.
* As they active the megapressure pump, which has been connected to the boroton firefighting system, Apollo, Starbuck, and lastly Sheba fire their boroton loads into the landing bay, extinguishing the flames; however, the megapressure pump blows a seal and fails, reigniting the flames in the landing bay.
* As the inferno nears energizer #2, causing a momentary loss of power in sickbay, Adama is prepped for emergency surgery; he suggests Tigh put out the fire by blowing portions of the hull, employing the vacuum of space.
* Apollo and Starbuck don EVA suits and begin spacewalking (with tether lines), planting explosive devices at various points along the hull; Apollo remembers Boxey's "mushies" trick, and suggests to Tigh to put mushies near the open duct, which he does.
* As the temperature climbs to critical in the energizer and solium compartments, Muffit emerges unexpectedly onto the bridge from the ventilcation duct; they attach lifemasks and a note from Tigh onto his collar and send him back to their stranded crewmates, who are sharing scant few lifemasks amid deteriorating conditions.
* A handhold on the hull being used by Starbuck breaks away, but Apollo reacts quickly to catch him.
* Dr. Salik undertakes the critical procedure on Adama, as the energizer temperature exceeds critical.
* While making the hazardous journey back to the storage compartment, Muffit sees a fallen firefighter in the corrider below; however, he continues with his mission, delivering the likemasks and Tigh's note.
* As Boomer and Athena prepare for the hull to be blown, Muffit dashes back into the duct, disappearing down the tunnel; Boxey dives in after him but is retrieved by Boomer.
* Apollo loses his grip and floats, adrift in space; Starbuck leaps toward him, the momentum carrying them to safety as the hull charges detonate, extinguishing the blaze once and for all.
* Adama, after a successful surgery, is awake and recovering in sickbay. Muffit, presumed dead, is suddenly brought in on a stretcher, badly burnt but still functional; he had gone back and saved the life of the fallen firefighter. They promise Boxey that Dr. Wilker will fix up Muffit to be as good as new.

Questions
* If the attack destroyed internal communication, then how did Omega know so quickly (within centons) that Boomer, Athena and Boxey were stranded in the rejuvenation center? In most disaster situations, when chaos is reigning, initial reports are very terse, with extremely limited and fragmented information.
* In sickbay, a crewman tells Cassiopia that he saw Boomer, Athena and Boxey "go in there [the rejuvenation center] right before the attack". But how is this possible, as they didn't enter together at the same time? When Boomer is first seen entering the room, Athena and Boxey were already comfortably camped out playing the shuffleboard game (which Boxey was winning, as they made a point of mentioning in the dialog). Perhaps the crewman couldn't remember correctly because his eyes were constantly being diverting down to Cassiopia's ... uniform; he couldn't quit glancing down at it, even while being led away.
* Why was the storage compartment of the rejuvenation center so large and accomodating? It seemed to be about half as big as the rejuvenation center itself. It even had its own phone.
* How did the technical crews so quickly adapt the boroton pressure pumps to the Vipers' laser turrets? It sounds like a feasible plan in the long run, but it also sounds like something that couldn't be done at the snap of the fingers, given that the equipment comes from two totally separate systems (military attack craft, firefighting equipment).
* After activating the device interfacing the megapressure pump system with the boroton firefighting system, why did the engineer walk away from the device, leaving it completely unattended. Indeed, the unit would fail at a critical point soon thereafter, greatly jeopardizing their chances for success.
* If Tigh ordered Omega to "have some mushies sent up" to the bridge, then why is he (Tigh) seen fetching them himself soon thereafter? Wouldn't it make more sense to have someone from the mess hall bring it to the bridge, rather than have the acting commander of the fleet go to the kitchen to perform a delivery himself?

Analysis
Notes
* In the rejuvenation center, crew members are briefly seen playing a board game resembling a combination of chess and checkers. Instead of being a two-player game, though, there are four players, each sitting at an edge of the playing board.
* Other rejuvenation center games include Colonial variations of billiards (without cue sticks), table tennis and shuffleboard.
* Boomer and Boxey agree to play a game called "Compartment Bulyarks" but are interrupted by the attack.
* Unlike the Officer's Club, the rejuvenation center is open to everyone aboard the Galactica, from flight officers to crewmen; even civilians, children, and daggits appear welcome. Presumably (although not explicitly mentioned), people on vessels other than the Galactica may reserve time in the rejuvenation center (after a short shuttle hop to the battlestar).
* The schematics of the Galactica were very deficient, devoid of any markings or labeling; the naming schemas used for decks, sections, compartments, etc., appear to be little more than hastily-assembled dialogue soundbites. It seems that a lot more effort had gone into the intricate games in the rejuvenation center (which were destroyed in the first few microns of the episode) than on the "detailed" blueprints of the Galactica.
*Boomer:"It doesn't show in my file, Athena, but when I was a kid on Caprica, I hot-linked more hovermobiles than there are doors on this ship."
*Boomer:"Boxey, it looks like I mashed your mushies."
*Tigh:"Apollo, if the fire reaches the Energizer or the solium, either one... the Galactica is doomed."
*Adama:"Let the vacuum of space smother it."
Person 1: Statement
Overview
:When several Viper pilots are killed in a freak accident, Adama turns to Starbuck for help - but her involvement in the aftermath of the accident and in training new pilots causes the truth surrounding Zak Adama's death to finally surface.

Summary
* It is Dwight “Flat Top” Saunder’s 1,000th deck landing, which brings Galactica’s pilots down to the hangar deck to celebrate
* As the celebrations continue, a communication drone stowed on the Hangar Deck breaks loose from its restraints, falling to the deck and igniting its motor. The drone flies across the hangar, smashing into the celebrating pilots where it explodes, killing Flat Top and twelve others and putting seven more in sickbay
* As the surviving pilots prepare for a memorial service for their fallen comrades, Kara "Starbuck" Thrace has flashbacks to her first meeting with William Adama, following the death of his son, Zak
* During the memorial service itself, she, Lee Adama and Bill Adama all have flashbacks – to Zak Adama’s funeral and (in Thrace's case) to her telling Zak he’s qualified as a Viper pilot
* Following the service, Commander Adama asks Thrace to oversee the training of any new pilots they can find in the fleet
* Thrace is initially hesitant, and the Commander guesses the cause is Zak's accident. He reassures her that his son’s death was not her fault – which causes Thrace to remember her admission to Lee Adama: that she passed Zak through his basic training when he had in fact failed (Mini-Series)
* She reluctantly accepts the duty, but memories of Zak continue to haunt her as she plays cards with Gaius Baltar, oblivious of a conversation that takes place between Crashdown and Felix Gaeta concerning Baltar’s Cylon detector – a conversation that leaves Boomer very uncomfortable
* Elsewhere on Galactica, President Laura Roslin is examined by the ship’s medical officer, Doctor Cottle. His diagnosis is not good: her cancer is inoperable. Roslin decides that she wants to try alternative therapy using Chamalla extract – something entirely unproven in its effectiveness
* Later, Thrrace meets her first batch of recruits. They are all pilots – but none have ever flown a Viper. With no simulators aboard Galactica, the newbies – Nuggets – are thrown in at the deep end: straight into the cockpit of the real thing
* Their performance during their first training flight is hardly stellar, and Thrace is uncompromisingly hard on the first batch of recruits, washing them all out
* Captain Adama confronts her on her decision, and realises it is caused more by guilt about Zak than on the ability of the trainees. When she refuses to reinstate the trainees, he takes the matter up with Commander Adama
* Commander Adama initially supports Thrace's decision, but a misunderstanding between him and Lee causes him to meet with Thrace to discuss Zak’s death
* When Starbuck tries to dodge the issue, Adama pins her down, and she admits the truth: Zak botched his final training flights, but she passed him because she was in love with him and they were engaged – but Zak really wasn’t the right material for flying Vipers
* Angered and hurt, Adama orders her to reinstate the trainees and to get out of his cabin
* Starbuck leads a handful of the trainees on a training flight, only to have a group of Cylon Raiders show up
* In the ensuing dogfight, Starbuck takes care of the Raiders (with Hot Dog's aid), but her Viper is damaged, forcing her to eject inside the atmosphere of a weather-wracked moon

On Caprica
* Karl Agathon and Sharon Valerii are tracking the source of the signal they previously picked up out in the woods (“Water”)
* The signal leads them to a restaurant in the city, which has a radiation shelter under it, stocked with everything they need to survive - water, food, blankets - even anti-radiation medication
* Their arrival at the restaurant is observed by a copy of Six.

Summary from scifi.com
After a flight deck accident kills 13 pilots and wounds many others, Kara is thrust into service as a flight instructor and ordered to turn a group of civilian pilots and academy washouts into full-fledged Viper pilots.

The assignment brings back painful memories for Kara. She can't forget how she let Zak — Commander Adama's son and her lover — pass Basic Flight when he wasn't ready, and how it ultimately cost him his life. Determined never to repeat the mistake, she flunks out the would-be pilots on their first day.

She is immediately confronted, first by Lee, then by Adama, and forced to admit to the Commander her role in Zak's death. Adama orders her to continue training the "nuggets." Meanwhile, Sgt. Hadrian continues her investigation into the detonators found in Sharon's spacecraft, and President Roslin consults the ship's doctor about her cancer.

Far away on Cylon-occupied Caprica, Sharon and Helo find a secret cache of food.
Questions
* Did the scene with the Viper burning and Starbuck's ejection at the end actually happen then? The problem is that it was also shown earlier in the episode, in two parts, apparently as flashforwards for Starbuck. (This is the case in the Australian version, at least.)
**This happened at the end of the episode. It was not a flashforward from Starbuck's POV, but for the audience.

Analysis
An interesting episode that reveals a lot of the back story around the late Zak Adama, hampered by a weak start.

The bonhomie between Starbuck, Lee and Adama as seen in the teaser doesn’t entirely work. Coming on top of the clear division between Adama and Lee following the latter’s activities on the Astral Queen just 48 hours before, it is hard to accept the cameraderie that they share here.

Also, while hijinks are to be expected, even in the most dire situations – the crew are going to have to let off steam at times – the whole “1,000th” landing idea smacked too much of a contrivance to get Galactica’s pilots together so that a bunch of them can be knocked off.

Moving on, there is Adama's cosy tête-à-tête with Starbuck regarding the role of instructor, the cosy little cuddle at the end just doesn't sit right. Until now, Adama has been portrayed as approachable but aloof. Personnel of all ranks have been comfortable in talking to him openly, and have clearly regarded him with respect. However, there has always been a degree of separation
between him and those around him. So it's a little hard to accept Adama as a man given to heartfelt hugs with junior officers - no matter what their past.

The hug serves a single purpose: a means to give Adama's relationship with Starbuck a little extra depth ready for his fall when her revelation concerning Zak is finally made.

However, once the story gets past these little wobbles, it turns into a finely-crafted piece, weaving the past, present and - in Starbuck's case - the future into a picture of love, guilt, betrayal, need, and hurt. The acting throughout is outstanding, and the framing superb throughout. The interweaving of Starbuck's and Adama's recollections of Zak's funeral with the Service for the Dead on Galactica is particularly potent, while Starbuck's flashbacks in particular serve to reveal her angst far more effectively than any amount of dialogue. To quote an old cliché: a picture is worth a thousand words.

Alongside the main story arc, other elements are moved forward, either directly, or through dialogue. It is through the latter that we learn that the water situation in the fleet is still not resolved, and that operations are continuing on the ice moon discovered by Boomer and Crashdown in "Water"; we also learn – via the card game – that secrets on Galactica are proving hard to keep: rumours are already spreading that Gaeta is assisting Baltar in the development of his Cylon detector.

Given a more direct reference is Roslin's illness. In a nice follow-on from "Bastille Day" she meets the Galactica's medical officer. Something of a cliché himself - a healer killing himself through smoking - but even so, he is a useful foil for opening a new mini-arc to Roslin's character: her determination to fight the cancer through orthodox and possibly unorthodox means.

Finally, on Caprica, it is now clear that the Cylons want Helo to remain with Valerii. The receipt of the "military signal" and the discovery of the cosy little "radiation shelter" are together too much of a coincidence. The shelter is a honey-trap, and Valerii is the bait.

An essential element to any story is the performance of the actors, and "Acts" presents some of the strongest performances just seen in BSG. In this, Edward James Olmos clearly silences any critics of his acting abilities. With barely a turn of the lips, an opening or narrowing of the eyes, he conveys everything we need to know about Adama's reaction to Thrace's admission in his cabin: confusion, hurt, betrayal, loss, anger and finally – fury. It's been a while since such a range of emotional reactions have been so powerfully portrayed, and full kudos to Mr. Olmos and to the episode's director and director of photography for the manner in which the scene is crafted.

Equally deserving of praise is Katee Sackhoff for her handling of Thrace's memories and dilemma. Here, for the first time, we get to see what goes on behind the “Starbuck” mask; and the flashback scenes to her time with Zak are handled with extraordinary poise, and add the required depth needed to reinforce her guilt at his loss, and her fear of what might happen should she ever be put in a similar position again – or that Adama should ever discover the truth.

Overall, a vastly different episode from all that has gone before and one that is, as stated before, saved from mediocrity only in the interweaving of the various story elements – future, present and past – and the outstanding performances from both Sackhoff and Olmos, well-supported by Jamie Bamber and James Callis.

Notes
*It is 48 hours since the prisoner uprising on the Astral Queen
*Water replenishment ops are still underway
*Galactica has a remaining contingent of 40 Vipers on top of her 5 Raptors (revealed in "Water"), but now only has 21 combat-ready pilots and a further 8 newbie “nuggets”
*Cylon Raiders have guns of an apparently similar nature to those mounted on Vipers
*Zak and Starbuck were engaged, and that led to her passing him for flight duty
*Adama's relationship with Starbuck is not as long-standing as the mini appeared to suggest: they have only served together for 2 years
*Word is leaking out about Baltar's “Cylon detector”
*Helo and Valerii still appear to be the only “people” left alive on Caprica. Neither seem in any hurry to get off the planet. (More humans are discovered in the second season episode, "Resistance".
*The Colonial military use what appear to be HumVees and Deuce-and-a-half trucks!
*While the Viper is burning on entry into the atmosphere, the Viper's altimeter is going in reverse, indicating altitude gain.
*The "R&D TV Animation" skit during the credits consists of David Eick pushing Ron Moore out the office window and Moore being run over by a mini van.

Noteworthy Dialogue
In Adama's Cabin, with Thrace and Adama, discussing comments made earlier by Lee Adama:

Adama: He said something else. That you might have been feeling guilty about something you did for Zak. What did you do for him?
Thrace: I don't know. You'd have to ask Lee.
Adama: I'm asking you.
Thrace: Well I don't kn- I, ah...I don't really know what he was talking about, so...
Adama: Don't fence with me, Kara. I love you like a daughter. I don't deserve that.
Thrace: Ummm...Zak...failed...basic flight. He wasn't a bad pilot, he just had no feel for flying...and, um, when it came to his final check ride he...busted...three of the test manoeuvres, and I should have flunked him, but I didn't. The bottom line is your...son...didn't have the chops to fly a Viper...and it killed him.
Adama: (following a flashback): You did it because you were engaged.
Thrace (breaking down): Because I made a mistake...because I was just...I was so in love with him...and I let that get in the way of doing my job...and um, and he um, he just wanted it so much, and I...I didn't want to be the one who crushed him...
Adama: Reinstate the trainees to flight status.
Thrace: I will...but I just want you to understand...that I...
Adama: Do your job.
Thrace: Yes sir...
Adama: And walk out of this cabin...while you still can...

Retcons
*Pyramid: In the Mini Series, pyramid is the name of a poker game. Later on, pyramid became the name of a sports game (similar to the original series' triad), and the card game was re-named Full Colors. (Resistance)
* Fleet numbers: In the mini-series, a total of 40 FTL ships (led by Roslin) rendevous with Battlestar Galactica at Ragnar Anchorage. This makes the count 41 ships, including Galactica. However, this number was enlarged for the series. In "33", Dualla states: "Jump 237 underway... 53 ships have jumped, 10 still reporting trouble with their FTL drives, including Colonial One." The count offered in "The Farm" was similar - 24 ships had left to join Roslin's fleet, which was "almost a third" of the fleet, putting the number at about 75.
*The Astral Queen: In the Mini Series, Billy Keikeya stated to Laura Roslin that the captain had 500 prisoners in his cargo hold, and that the Queen was a cargo vessel transporting prisoners to a prison. In "Bastille Day", the Billy's lines were redubbed: 1,500 prisoners were aboard the Queen, that the Queen was a prison transport. Lee Adama would go on to later state that the Queen was en route to Caprica during the Cylon attack for parole hearings.
*Cylon Detector: In the episode "Flesh and Bone", it takes only minutes to identify Sharon Valerii as a Cylon. However, in "Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down", he states that complete testing on one sample of blood takes 11 hours. Perhaps it's easier for his test to make a conclusive positive than a conclusive negative.

Danglers
*Zarek-Tigh Plotline: In the episode "Colonial Day", it is heavily implied that Ellen Tigh revealed the location of Valance to agents of Tom Zarek, and that she intends for her husband, Colonel Saul Tigh to meet with Zarek's people in the near future. As of the middle of the second season, this plotline has not been revisited.

Recasting
*Zak Adama: In the Mini Series, a different actor was pictured as Zak Adama. In "Act of Contrition", a new actor portrayed Zak, and the picture was changed to reflect the casting choice.
*Ellen Tigh: Same with Zak Adama. The picture of Saul Tigh's wife, which Tigh had burned a hole through, was originally a picture of David Eick's wife. When Kate Vernon was cast as Ellen in "Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down", the image was changed.
*Richard Adar: In the miniseries, portrayed by David Eick in a photograph in Baltar's domicile on Caprica. Recast as Colm Feore for the episode "Epiphanies".

VFX Gaffes
*Viper and Pilot numbers: In the episode "Flight of the Phoenix", 42 Vipers are deployed at a time when no more than 34 could have been serviceable, and with no more than 25 pilots available.
*Colonial One: Half-way through Season 1, the Colonial One CG model was updated and the seal of the President of the Colonies was added to the hull. However, the reuse of stock footage from the Mini-Series and earlier in the first season cause the seal to continually disappear and re-appear in the same episode depending on what shot is used.
*Viper Types: When Starbuck and Kat launch on Combat Air Patrol (CAP) in the episode "Scar", both pilots are flying Viper Mk. VIIs; however, during the lauch tube sequence, a Viper Mk. II was shown. As an earlier scene showed Starbuck boarding her Viper Mk. VII, it implied Kat was flying a Viper Mk. II, in complete contradiction to the rest of the episode.
**It is likely the show has no stock footage of a Mk. VII launch sequence, as they are not used often.

Dialogue Errors
*DRADIS/RADAR:Starbuck refers to "radar range" instead of "DRADIS" in "The Hand of God", when describing the attack plan on the Cylon asteroid base.
**It actually sounds like Starbuck said "Raider range" in this scene.

A High School in a suburb of Delphi City on Caprica. It survives the Cylon Cylon Attack remarkably well and becomes a base of operations for the anti-Cylon resistance movement that has sprung up among survivors. Led by Samuel Anders, captain of the pro Pyramid team the Caprica Buccaneers, over 100 people at one time live and operate out of the bombed out High School and it provides good cover from the Cylons, who have never attacked. For recreational purposes Anders and the Buccaneers construct a make-shift Pyramid court in the school's courtyard for anyone who wishes to use it.
Battlestar Pegasus was the second battlestar known to have survived the Cylon Attack. It was commanded by Commander Cain, whom Viper pilots Bojay and Sheba served under. It was the only surviving ship from the Battle of Molecay, meeting up with Galactica in The Living Legend.

The military genius Cain leads the ship against two Cylon Basestars to permit the Galactica and the Fleet to escape. The question of the survival of Cain and his battlestar was always in doubt, though it is generally assumed by the fandom that the ship survived.
Pegasus is derived from the Greek mythos. Pegasus was a winged horse-god who was the foal of Poseidon; this image of a winged horse is emblematic on the Helmet of Pegasus's Viper pilots in The Living Legend.
