*[[William Adama|Bill Adama]], wearing civilian clothes, is conversing with another gentleman in a shaded room. Adama talks about his combat experience, commanding billions of cubits of men and materials, but doesn't want to go through with something. The man responds that he's only asking for one hour of his time, and that "sometimes there are things that you gotta do."
*Across the city, Dr. [[Gaius Baltar]] is speaking with [[Caprica-Six]] in a limo, talking briefly about having things done for you as opposed to being independent. Baltar and Caprica-Six begin fooling around in the limo, when a call comes through. Baltar is immediately shaken, he apologizes, and asks the other person to wait for him. The other person sounds ready to leave, but Baltar tells the person on the other end to wait for him, or he will sue them for abandonment.
*[[Laura Roslin]] is sending out the last guest from a baby shower she hosted for her sister. Laura and her two younger sisters then sit on the couch, celebrating and laughing together.
*In an apartment kitchen, [[Kara Thrace]] is contemplating something and preparing food when the doorbell rings. Kara is surprised, saying they're early, and greets [[Lee Adama]] at the door, carrying flowers. Kara invites him in, and calls for Zak. [[Zak Adama]] comes out and greets his brother, and introduces Kara as his girlfriend.
*Baltar pleads with Nurse Barbara to stay with his father [[Julius Baltar|Julius]] at his apartment, after she is stabbed with a steak knife, but she refuses and leaves. Caprica-Six walks in, despite Baltar's instructions to stay in the car. Baltar starts berating his father over the fact that he's driven away three nurses, at great cost to him, while his father starts talking about Baltar's past. Baltar starts yelling and hitting his father, demanding that he shut up. Baltar then sends Caprica-Six away, saying he will be spending the rest of the evening with his father.
*Laura Roslin is approached by two Caprica City Police officers at her apartment. The two inform her that the night before, her father and her sisters died in a car accident. The other driver survived, and was intoxicated at the time of the accident. Roslin, upset, calmly asks the officers to leave. She stands in her apartment, alone, thinking, and then walks to a park in her nightgown. She rests her feet in the fountain, and then wades in the water, and rests on a nearby rock, letting the splashing water wash over her. The drops of water falling into the pond match what was seen in the earlier montage.

*In the Hangar Bay, Lee Adama is complaining about the amount of materials the ship captains want from ''Galactica''. Lee is signing a number of documents (and also sending some back for revision), when a deckhand argues over the fact that the magnetic accelerators are being stripped. While Lee points out that they can be used as autoloaders for the civilian ships, the deckhand says that "it's like tearing the old girl's heart out", as it's used in launching Vipers. Lee compromises that the accelerators will be last thing they remove from ''Galactica'', then they'll "turn out the lights, and let the old girl die in peace."

*The act opens with [[William Adama|Admiral Adama]] finished packing the last of his belongings into boxes to be moved to the Cylon basestar. As the last of his belongings is closed, the rattling of the hull can be heard overhead.
*Paulla tells [[Gaius Baltar|Baltar]] that they now control a majority in at least half the ships in the fleet. While Paulla continues to cheer about their political power, Baltar looks up to see [[Virtual Six]]. Six points out that "humanity's final chapter is about to be written," with him as the author. Baltar turns back to Paulla, thinking back.
*In [[Sam Anders|Anders']] room, [[Kara Thrace|Kara]] sits with him, contemplating the notes she got from Hera ([[Someone to Watch Over Me]]). With equations and notes, Kara continues to ponder.

Baltar shoos the young woman upstairs, while Baltar declares Caprica an intruder and orders her out. Caprica-Six mentions that she had Julius moved to the Regency, a full-time care facility. Caprica mentions that he loves his new arrangements, and that the last time she saw him, he seemed happy.

* The episode does not have an opening teaser beyond the "Previously..." segment and a brief depiction of Galactica deckhands and several Baseship Number Eight pilots guiding passengers to ships and other ''Galactica'' bound ships from the Baseship. Nor does the opening credits include clips from the episode, the first time this has happened since the start of Season 3.
*We finally learn [[Sherman Cottle|Cottle]]'s first name: Sherman. Adama calls him by it when telling him he's too valuable for the fleet to lose.
* It is revealed that [[Laura Roslin]] had two sisters (one pregnant), and that they and her father were killed in an automobile accident at some point before she was appointed as Secretary of Education under the Adar Administration.

Also confirmed [[Galen Tyrol]] was imprisoned for his role in unwittingly helping Boomer to escape with Hera (a scene indicating this was filmed for "[[Islanded in a Stream of Stars]]" but cut from the televised version).
* For the first time in many episodes, the six surviving members of the [[Significant Seven]] appear in the same episode (albeit [[Leoben]] appears only in the opening recap). This was the first time we have seen a [[Doral]] or a [[Simon]] since [[The Hub]].
* In the flashback to Starbuck's apartment, the painting of the Eye of Jupiter can be seen behind her when she opens the door.

Athena is presumably also on this mission despite her giving up hope her daughter is alive since she is present and remained on the starboard side with Helo. Doc Cottle initially volunteers for the mission, but stays behind at Adama's request. Although Gaius Baltar does not volunteer, he seems to be highly conflicted with himself.

== Analysis ==
*Cavil plans to use Hera to find out how she was created in order to continue the Cylon species, presumably through normal reproduction.
**It also proves Cavil intends to dissect Hera to discover the secret of procreation, confirming both Starbuck's and Athena's worst fears.
*Roslin likely feels quite protective of Hera as despite being barely able to walk, she volunteers for the rescue mission (although her love for Adama likely also played a part in her decision).
*Cottle may be either the best doctor in the fleet or one of the only ones as Adama says he's too valuable for the fleet to lose on the rescue mission.
*Baltar seems conflicted when volunteers are called. This inner conflict stems from his earlier conversation with Lee Adama where he confessed that he had never done anything for purely selfless motivations with no gain for himself. He does not, however, cross the line and join the volunteers.
** If Baltar does join, then it would seem likely that all the elements are in place to fulfill the Opera House vision: Athena, Roslin, Caprica Six and Baltar will all be in pursuit of Hera.
** Baltar's Virtual Six has told him many times that he is supposed to be Hera's guardian and "father". It seems incongruous with his destiny for him not to join a mission to rescue Hera.
*It's clear that despite his controversial choices, Adama still commands a great deal of loyalty and respect from the crew. Much of the crew - or at least those that are on the hangar deck at the time - volunteers for the mission. At the very least, Adama has enough people with him to take ''Galactica'' into battle.
** It should be noted that although the non-volunteers appear to outnumber the volunteers at least two-to-one, many of the non-volunteers are civilians.
** It should also be noted that almost all the Marines volunteer for the mission.
** Also, it is likely Adama will have more volunteers than are visible on screen in the hangar deck scene. Certainly not all the crew of ''Galactica'' were on the hangar deck at the time given the size of the combined crew at this point. Doubtless some had to stay on duty (Colonel Tigh confirms this when he says in CIC that that those on duty must report to Adama later to declare themselves) or were on the Cylon basestar or civilian ships helping offload Galactica's stripped parts. It was also probably impractical for the producers to muster some 3000 plus extras for this scene to show Galactica's full crew.
** Given that Adama had trouble manning ''Galactica'' during the occupation of [[New Caprica]], when the ship was stated as being at half strength, it is fair to assume the Admiral is going to need roughly half the original crew compliment to carry out this last combat mission - roughly 1300 people. As stated above, this many volunteers are not seen on screen, but given some crew could volunteer later, Adama might well muster about this number in the end.
*In the brig Tyrol tells Helo-who is surprisingly civil even sympathetic toward Tyrol given his hand in the abduction-that they are all the same referring to the Eights. He says it as a word of advice and warning. That they made them the same and therefore can only expect betrayal from Athena as what happened to Tyrol at the hands of Boomer. However, given the fact that he has no first hand knowledge of making the Eights and the other seven Cylon models and the psychic pain Galen suffered at the betrayal, his opinion most likely comes from deep, deep, abiding pain and not a intellectual analysis in his disregard of the individuality of Athena and the other Eights and particularly Athena's track record of loyalty. This also maybe a case of misery loves company and Tyrol, subconsciously or knowingly, wants to see Helo and Athena split up to allay his own feelings of being duped, by saying they are all a like and putting doubt in Helo's mind. Also, by claiming that Athena and the other Eights are just machines this could mitigate the guilt for his role in the abduction and possible death of Hera. If Athena is just a machine, then she cannot be hurt emotionally. She has no emotions, just a programmed facsimile. Tyrol wouldn't have to feel responsible for such pain he caused her since, as a machine, she can't really feel it, sparing '''''himself''''' a lot of pain and guilt.
*Tyrol is himself a Cylon machine, so his rant speaks of denial and projected self-hatred as well as bitterness.
*The finale appears to be taking a character-driven approach, devoting significant screen time to pivotal flashbacks for the central characters that relate to their current circumstances.
**We see the first time Starbuck and Apollo' met, with hints alluding to their future romantic relationship.
**Roslin deals with the sudden death of her sisters and father by wading into a fountain, which she uses to disguise the tears that she shed for the lost of her family. The gushing water cuts to a shot of her IV drip as she lies dying on Galactica.
**Baltar and Caprica-Six begin their relationship with an act of compassion on Six's part towards Baltar's father. Baltar's selfishness, a theme raised repeatedly in the episode, is contrasted with Caprica Six's seemingly genuine concern for [[Julius Baltar|Julius]].
*One of the shots in the opening sequence is of a sun rising over a blue planet: daybreak. The theme may symbolize an end to the fleet's long four years of gloom and darkness.
**In that image of the planet, Antarctica is clearly seen, specifically the Ronne Ice Shelf, Queen Maud Land, and the Antarctic Peninsula. Where southern South America and southern Africa would be, the surface is covered by clouds, and the location of southern Australia/New Zealand is too dark. Although not as recognizable as the image of North America in [[Crossroads, Part II]], it is clear that the planet shown here is our Earth.
***Despite the similarities, the sun and the stars are in the wrong position for this to be our Earth. More than likely, the planet being depicted is Caprica. Especially when the sequence is taken as a whole: The Galaxy, Sun rise over a planet, In orbit over the planet, then a helicopter like fly over of Caprica City heavily implies that was Caprica as the planet we saw.
*Hera is drawing "dots", as Cavil calls them, on the Colony. These are much more numerous than the simple line that she gave Starbuck, its at least a full page long. It seems to be an entire musical score. However, not knowing that they are music notes, Cavil doesn't see this.
*Someone left a picture of Athena about to kiss Hera on the head on the now abandoned memorial wall. It may have been Athena herself, who has given up on Hera's survival.
* Baltar's reaction to Lee's accusation that he has never done a selfless thing in his life shows how much the character of Baltar has grown, especially in the Fourth Season. Previously, whenever someone called Baltar's motives or attributes(especially his loyalty) into question, he reacted very passionately, and angrily, to defend himself(and often led to him being coaxed into doing what Virtual Six wanted, to the detriment of the humans in the fleet). On this occasion, however, Baltar not only does not even attempt to defend himself, he resignedly admits that he wouldn't trust him either(tacitly admitting both that Lee is correct in his assertion and that his self-serving actions have been extremely detrimental in the past). This change in attitude visibly surprises Lee who seems quite taken aback and appears to momentarily contemplate talking to Baltar again when he returns to the Hanger Deck.
* Adama's decision to rescue Hera was prompted by Constanza's remarks about saving the photos of his fallen comrades because he didn't want to leave them behind. It should not then be surprising to see that Constanza was one of the first pilots(not counting Lee Adama) to cross the line and join in the potential suicide mission with Adama.
* Ander's flashback of his life before the War contains an interesting aspect of Anders not seen before. Though he was implanted with memories of being a "jock", but when he candidly spoke to the sports reporter, he revealed a more intellectual and artistic side of himself. This may be a hint of his former personality (a scientist and musician) before Cavil blocked his memories.
* In a humorous side commentary, Skulls points out that many of the dangerous or lethal Raptor missions are usually given to him and Racetrack. Historically, this has been true as the duo have been pivotal for discoveries such as New Caprica, receiving the first message from the Resistance, discovering that the Cylons were tracking the fleet to the Nebula, propulsion problems (exploding engine) due to contaminated jet fuel.
* Skull's comment of "The more things change the more they stay the same." is a different twist of quoting the Pythian Prophecy that "All this has happened before, and all this will happen again." The phrase is a common proverb in English, indicating that surface changes only serve to reveal enduring underlying constants. It is derived from a French epigram by novelist Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr (1808-1890), "plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose."

How can Ellen download without resurrection technology? Does that mean that Ellen is not in the womb of Caprica 6? (Or does Caprica 6 and/or child die forcing resurrection?) Which basestar has she resurrected on?

==Plot hole==
Found a major plot hole regarding the Journey of the Five. Anders states that they traveled at near-light speed from Earth to the Colonies, resulting in a time dilation effect. Time passed slower aboard the ship than it did in real space. Since Earth was nuked 2000 years ago, then that means 2000 years passed in real space while a considerably shorter amount of time passed aboard the Five's space ship. We don't know the exact amount of time that passed aboard the ship, but it is safe to assume that it would have been considerably less than 2000 years. The question becomes: how far does the ship travel? If the time dilation effect results in 2000 years passing in real space, then the Five space ship must have traveled at most only a few light years to reach the colonies. If, for example, only 5 years pass aboard the Five ship and they are traveling close to light speed, then they can only travel a bit less than 5 light years to reach their destination. Which means the Colonies and Earth are *much* closer to each other than the series has let on. Even given a roundabout journey by the RTFF, the distance to the Algae Planet alone would have to be very close in order for the Five to stop and plant clues there, to say nothing of the virus probe or the possibility that the Five built the Star Map on Kobol as well.

So this Final Five resurrection ship was quite obviously already on its way to the 12 colonies by the time of the holocaust. It seems to me that if 2000 years passed outside of a ship traveling close to c, then it would have traveled a significantly high fraction of 2000 light years. If we could launch a ship to Alpha Centauri at 99% of c, then those of us on Earth would see it arrive in around 5 years (leaving aside time for acceleration/deceleration), not 100, 1000, or 2000 years. I ran the problem past a physicist and this is what I got:

The ship from Earth, travelling at near-light speed, takes 2000 years to travel to the Colonies. Anders says they resurrected onto a ship that they built in orbit of Earth, implying that it was still in orbit at the time of the Earth holocaust. Even if the ship had a head start, it would only be a few light years from Earth when the holocaust took place, given that the resurrection project would have to have been completed and installed aboard the ship before it left, and the Five all worked on the project.

At .99 c, approximately 250 years would pass aboard the Five's ship, while 2000 years would pass in real time. Given the fact that they had resurrection technology, it's easily possible for the Five to survive the trip.

The continuity problem is that Galactica's journey to Earth is incredibly roundabout, even given a detour to Kobol. It's 13 000 light years from the Algae planet to the Ionian Nebula, while Kobol is only 4000 light years from the same place. (It took light from the first supernova 4000 years to reach Kobol.) Given the other stops Galactica took along the way, they were almost going around in a huge circle (like going from Los Angeles to New York by way of Argentina).

Seems to me that since we don't know the distances involved, the speed at which the ship was travelling, or the relative positions of the star systems in question it is useless to speculate on this point. For instance, how do you know they didn't run into the Colony Cylons part way there (and jumped with them the rest of the way to 12C)?

==Nature of the Cylons==

Seems significant to me that the Cylons seem to follow similar patterns on Earth as well as the 12 Colonies. Did mech Cylons occur on Kobol? Also, what became of the Eath mech Centurians? Wouldn't they set out to hunt down the Colonists? What of any survivors from the hybrid basestar in Razor?

I also wonder about Cavil. Why did he react so strongly to the removal of the telencephalic inhibitors from the Centurians? I would assume that he would feel affinity for them being that he desires to be mechanical in nature.

Speaking of the Centurians.... just what do THEY think of all this? I hope the writers have addressed some of these points!

In the analysis of the episode we should consider adding something mentioning the parallel between Cavil/Ellen's sexual relationship with the kinds of relationships that the Lords of the Kobol had among themselves (mainly Zeus and Hera who were brother and sister '''AND''' husband and wife. This also counts for Saul/Caprica Six and Tyrol/Boomer. There is an interesting irony in how Cavil (an atheist) and Ellen (a monotheist) manage to mirror the behavior of polytheistic deities that they have both rejected. == Summary ==

*The final moments of "[[Precipice]]" are reshown as the captured detainees are being taken off the trucks. [[Cally Tyrol]] is freed, as the Centurions march up the hill. Tyrol continues to run as gunfire is heard. As the screen goes to black, the words "One Hour Earlier" are displayed.
*[[Galen Tyrol]] is frantically talking with [[Saul Tigh]] about a list of detainees he received from his [[Felix Gaeta|source]], Cally Tyrol is among the listed. Tigh snaps him back to his senses, noting that they can locate the people now that they cracked the Cylons' coordinate system.
*Chief Tyrol immediately gets to work, succesfully calculating the location of the execution, and gathers a team to rescue Cally and the others.
*Tyrol's team, including [[Seelix]], is able to catch up with the Cylons, and get in position as Cally Tyrol starts running. *Anders seems to know, or at least suspect, what is so special about Maya's child.

*Baltar has become a suicidal drunk - his appearance has become slovenly and he appears to have given up on basic grooming. He is also having trouble performing the act of sex with Caprica-Six.
*Admiral Adama's claim that his crew "will find immortality as only the Gods once knew" draws on [[wikipedia:Iliad#The story of the Iliad|the choice]] given to [[wikipedia:Achilles|Achilles]] by [[wikipedia:Thetis|his mother]] about joining the war in [[wikipedia:Troy|Troy]]: fight couragously and perish in battle, or be forgotten by history. Achilles chose to go to battle and is a legend. According to interviews, [[Bradley Thompson]] and [[David Weddle]] deliberately draw inspirations from ancient stories like [[wikipedia:Homer|Homer]]'s [[wikipedia:Iliad|Iliad]].
*There is a discontinuity between "[[Precipice]]" and this episode regarding the execution scene. First, Cally apparently changed direction between episodes for more dramatic effect. At the conclusion of "Precipice", Cally is shown jumping into a gully to the "left" of where the trucks are stopped, and is apparently shown running "down", toward the initial camera position. The camera shoots Cally from her right as she runs, showing a backdrop of trees and vines. In "Exodus, Part I", she is shown running to the "right", towards Tyrol and the other resistance fighters. The camera here is also from Cally's right, but this time she is running in front of a barren background. Secondly, the gunfire starts at a different time. At the conclusion of "Precipice", Cally is clearly shown running ''while'' the gunfire begins. In "Exodus, Part I", Tyrol throws her to the ground ''before'' it does.
*Saul Tigh seems to be a well-respected and capable leader of the resistance, and his people-skills seem to have improved drastically as evidenced by the way he handles the distraught Tyrol when news of his wife's fate is leaked to him from inside the New Caprica government. This stands in stark contrast of Tigh's leadership of the Fleet after Boomer's attempted assassination of Adama, where Tigh exhibits a profound lack of leadership ability, a fact that he himself acknowledges when Adama returns to active duty and relieves him of command. Perhaps the experience leading the Fleet was a hard lesson learned. This may have to do with the fact that Tigh chose to command the resistance, whereas command of the Fleet just fell to him.
* Apparently, Seelix has improved her shooting skills because she takes up a sniper position at the execution site, while in "[[Fragged]]" she stated that she hadn't fired a weapon since basic training.

He refuses until she forces it onto him before the [[Colonial Marine Corps|Marine]]s remove her.

*[[Margaret Edmondson|Margaret "Racetrack" Edmondson]] and [[Hamish McCall|Hamish "Skulls" McCall]] are conducting reconnaissance to see if any Cylons are following the Fleet's jumps. Their [[Raptor]] hides behind an asteroid as they play [[Triad (RDM)|cards]] and wait.
*The trial begins. Cassidy asks the courtroom how loss is measured.
*She notes the number of people who settled on New Caprica, the number who escaped in the [[Second Exodus]] and the number lost: 5,197 left behind, killed or otherwise missing.
*The attorney claims that the trust put in Baltar was gravely misplaced, and that the ultimate price must be paid.
*[[Romo Lampkin]], Baltar's attorney, immediately asks to change the plea to guilty as a ploy to use reverse psychology to claim that the power of [[w:Mob rule|mob rule]] is trying to sway opinion in the court.
*Lampkin claims that President Roslin is seeking vengeance on Baltar for [[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II|her lost election]], and claims that the [[New Caprica]]ns were victims of a hopeless battle. Baltar's decision to surrender to the Cylons had saved lives, he claims, versus what Lampkin claims Roslin would have done -- stand and fight.
*Back on Racetrack's Raptor, five [[Basestar (RDM)|baseships]] suddenly appear and attack. Racetrack's [[FTL]] drive barely comes online in time to allow them to escape an incoming missile.
*Back on ''[[Galactica]]'', in [[CIC]], Admiral [[William Adama|Adama]] orders a scan for any [[Cylon transponder|tracking devices]] that may have been left on Fleet ships during the New Caprica siege. At the same time [[Tory Foster]] hands Roslin a cup and a thermos can. Roslin insists on asking the incarcerated [[Caprica-Six]] for information. When Tigh objects, Roslin snaps back, uncharacteristically.
*[[Lee Adama]] enters CIC near Roslin, who is collecting herself in the Weapons Control station. He notices Roslin's cup, which she left on the table, and smells it, detecting something unexpected.
*Caprica-Six is questioned. She suggests that the [[refinery ship]] is being tracked by a unique radiation signature emitted by the ship. The [[Virtual beings|virtual Baltar]] appears and convinces her not to cooperate further. Caprica Six retaliates to Tigh's interrogation by recalling [[Ellen Tigh]], inciting Tigh to strike her, and Six to strike back before [[Marine]]s intervene and shackle the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylon]].

===Act 2===
*In court, Tigh is questioned, and asked if Baltar appeared to help the [[New Caprica Resistance|resistance]] in any way. Tigh is noticeably drunk. When questioned about Ellen, Tigh acknowledges her involvement but becomes more withdrawn.
*Lampkin cross-examines about the [[NCP]] [[Precipice|initiation bombing]] and how the resistance attempted to target Baltar. Lampkin continues to question about Ellen Tigh's [[Exodus, Part I|collaboration]] by asking Colonel Tigh if his wife was a collaborator, muddying the differences between Ellen Tigh and Baltar. Lampkin points out that Tigh appears drunk. Matters turn for the worse when Tigh begins to hear the music.
*Tigh is asked the nature of Ellen's death, and Tigh resolutely answers, claiming that Baltar's inaction made him kill his wife. He reflects a portion of his wife's [[Exodus, Part II|last words]] to tell how he would do anything to have Baltar killed. Tigh begins to show increasing signs of anger as the music in his head continues to increase in volume.
*In Joe's Bar, Anders turns a eye to strange noises from the bar's public wireless and shares a look with Foster.
*Under testimony, Roslin notes the execution of 200 people under Cylon tyranny.
*Lampkin attempts to get Lee Adama to give some insight about Roslin's testimony and Roslin herself, instead of being a passive observer who is simply satisfied in embittering his father.
*Lampkin attempts to play to Lee Adama's sense of justice by putting him between two difficult decisions. One being the betrayal of Roslin and his father, or putting his words about justice into action by sharing the personal information with Lampkin.

===Act 3===
*Admiral Adama drags the drunken Tigh to his quarters. The Fleet is nine jumps away from the nebula, and repairs are being made to the fuel ship to keep it from being tracked.
*Tigh says that he can't "smell her anymore" and apologizes for his actions in court. Adama replies that, as his [[Scattered|oldest friend]], he could never embarrass him.
*In the admiral's quarters, Major Adama suggests the idea of sending the fuel ship on a different course to throw off the Cylons temporarily, and the admiral, who appears a little less than sober himself, coldly takes it under advisement.
*The two Adamas verbally spar. Admiral Adama angrily accuses his son of helping Lampkin by telling him about what Tigh did to Ellen. The major denies knowing anything about that, and his father calls him a liar, and a coward, for not having the guts to face Tigh with the accusations himself. He further states that Baltar is a guilty traitor, and does not deserve a trial at all.
*In response, Major Adama resigns from military duty, stating flatly that he will not serve under a man who questions his integrity. The admiral accepts the resignation, stating with the same cold bitterness that he will not accept an officer who has none.
*At the next court session, Lee Adama asks permission to question Roslin himself.
*Lee Adama (in civilian dress) questions President Roslin about the number of times that Baltar saved her life. He points out that it was Baltar who [[Epiphanies|saved her from cancer]]. When Admiral Adama objects, Lampkin asks for hostile witness latitude, which is given.
*Roslin admits that her cancer was cured thanks to Baltar's idea to inject her with the blood of the half-Cylon child. When asked what medications she was taking at the time, she claims that she cannot remember because she was taking a lot of different things. When asked specifically about [[chamalla]] use, Roslin answers in the affirmative but she points out that her use of it [[Home, Part II|provided the first clues to Earth]], and also notes Lee Adama's own involvement.
*Before Lee Adama asks his next question, Roslin whispers to him: "Don't do this." He then asks if she is taking chamalla again.
*Admiral Adama tries to overrule the line of questioning but other tribunal judges overrule him, forcing Roslin to answer. She recalls [[Miniseries, Night 1|her fondness for Lee Adama's early leadership]], how calling him "Captain Apollo" way back then had a nice ring to it, but how sad she is for him now.
*Adama notes that chamalla can be sweetened to mask its bitter taste, recalling the cup of tea that Tory gave Roslin at ''Galactica'''s CIC, which gave him the clue to her use of the drug.
*Roslin confirms that she is taking chamalla again. She then challenges counselor Adama to finish what he started with his last question. After being goaded by her to do so, he asks her why she was taking the drug again. She tells the court that she is taking the drug again because her cancer has returned.

===Act 4===
*[[Anastasia Dualla]] packs her bags and leaves her husband in disgust over his questioning of Roslin and his usage of a justice system that she believes is very dysfunctional.
*On ''[[Colonial One]]'', reporters pepper President Roslin about her cancer, how it will be treated, and if she plans on using Hera Agathon's blood again. The line of questioning infuriates Foster, causing her to lash out at the reporters, and Roslin asks her to leave the press conference. When [[Karen Fallbrook]] asks how long the President has to live, an unflinching Roslin repeats the same question at the reporter, leaving Fallbrook speechless.
*After the press conference, Roslin angrily criticizes her aide, complaining that Foster is off her game. Foster claims that she hasn't been sleeping well. Roslin is unsympathetic, and flatly states that if Foster does not pull it together, she will have her replaced by someone who can "run a comb through her hair" once a week.
*In his quarters, the drunken Tigh still hears the mysterious music and tries to track its source.
*[[Helo]] arrives in CIC as interim [[Executive officer]] and finds Lt. [[Felix Gaeta|Gaeta]], who briefs him. The [[tylium]] fuel ship decoy plan is nearing completion, but there are no further reports of Cylon forces. The Fleet is a mere three jumps from the nebula.
*Helo remembers a certain smell in the air when trouble was brewing, recalling the weather on [[Caprica (RDM)|Caprica]] before a big storm. He believes that "something over the horizon" is coming, something that doesn't bode well for the Fleet. "A storm is coming," he says.

*The episode has one of the most sparse musical scores yet. The only major pieces are during Roslin's dream at the beginning and the music Tigh keeps hearing. According to a [http://bearmccreary.com/html/blog/blog027.htm blog entry] by composer [[Bear McCreary]], director [[Michael Rymer]] and the editors decided not to use any music during the court room part, in order to let the scenes speak for themselves.
*It is the first episode without an intro sequence, thus increasing the effective running time a little bit. Because of that, no updated [[Survivor Count]] is available. The last known count was 41,398, accounting for [[Henry Cheadle]]'s apparent death in "[[The Son Also Rises]]".
*The bitterness of chamalla and that it can be sweetened to make it taste better, is first mentioned by the oracle [[Dodona Selloi]] in "[[Exodus, Part I]]".
*One of the shots of others listening to the trial on the [[wireless]] shows the [[refinery ship]] from "[[Dirty Hands]]".

* There is a [[Cult of Baltar|growing number of people]] in the Fleet who believe that [[Gaius Baltar|Baltar]] has some sort of healing or divine abilities. [[Virtual Six]] doesn't want him to brush off these devoted followers, indicating that his belief that he is the "Chosen One" is coming true.
* [[Samuel Anders]] wears a uniform with rank insignia and hangs around with [[Diana Seelix|Seelix]] and [[Brendan Costanza|Costanza]]. Together with being addressed as "you [[nugget]]s", this indicates that he joined the pilot training program. This fact is confirmed in "[[He That Believeth In Me]]".
* [[Bell]] has apparently suffered no lasting, adverse effects from his association with [[D'Anna Biers]], who is otherwise known as the [[humanoid Cylon]] "[[Number Three]]", given his presence in the courtroom videotaping Baltar's trial.

=== The Ionian Nebula / The Strange Music ===

* It appears the closer the [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]] is to the [[Ionian nebula]], the more [[Saul Tigh|Tigh]], [[Samuel Anders|Anders]], and [[Tory Foster|Foster]] hear the music with distracting effects. In the case of Foster, it leads her to the point of exhaustion. In Tigh's case, it leads to further emotional distress, and only further discredits him as a witness in the trial due to his outburst to "turn off that music!".
* Tory Foster appears to be losing her composure to some extent based on her declining grooming habits and snappish attitude toward the reporters.
* When [[Karl Agathon|Agathon]] tells [[Felix Gaeta|Gaeta]] that a "storm is coming", it hearkens back to Admiral [[William Adama|Adama]]'s words to him at the end of "[[The Woman King]]", specifically to how Agathon has often been the voice in the wilderness. His ability to sense or remember certain details hails back to the final scene in "[[Rapture]]" when he remembers that [[Kara Thrace|Thrace]] had painted the picture of the mandala. It is also similar to [[Sharon Agathon|his wife]] predicting that "something dark is coming" in "[[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I]]".

=== The Cylons ===

* The Cylons have apparently been tracking the Fleet since the destruction of the [[Temple of Five]]. Their strategy was to delay jumping into any system that the Fleet has been until after six plus hours to ensure that the Fleet would not realize that they were being tracked.
* Adama's military experience comes into play again when he orders that the trailing [[Raptor]] stay for a total of 12 hours. This is reminiscent of his previous strategies such as the decision to attack the Cylon tylium factory in "[[The Hand of God (RDM)|The Hand of God]]". When he changes the regular pattern and stays longer than the Cylons had expected, he finally catches them in the act.

=== Lee Adama ===

* Lee Adama immediately displays signs of fear once Roslin challenges him to "finished what you started" after asking her if she is taking chamalla again. This indicates that either he suspected that Roslin's cancer has returned or he was beginning to feel that his actions are treacherous.
*This is not the first time that a belief in taking a principled but unpopular stand leads Lee Adama into a morally dubious area. Ironically one such decision also involves Laura Roslin - Lee's decision to mutiny against his father when the then Commander Adama tries to remove Roslin from office during the events of "[[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II]]". He almost precipitates a gun battle aboard ''Colonial One'' when he mutinies against Colonel Tigh, who is commanding the strike team sent to arrest Roslin, who ultimately surrenders and does not back the younger Adama's move. This suggests a continuous personality trait of failing to judge the consequences of a headstrong pursuit of a perceived moral cause. Soon after, Lee exhibits a similar late realization of the dangerous moral territory he wandered into when he hesitates and ultimately finds himself unable to advocate a widespread mutiny against his father's leadership over the wireless ([[The Farm]]).
**The tendency to try and stand on principle (and thus assuage one's own conscience) over practicality seems to be an Adama family trait. The elder Adama has also done this on numerous occasions, sometimes with tragic results ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]).
* Adama's actions towards his father and Roslin have led to another impasse between himself and Dualla. Lee Adama has come to a point where he has been alienated from his father, from Roslin, and his wife, in an attempt to gain some sort of respect from Lampkin and to act in accordance with his noble conceptions of justice by following in his grandfather's footsteps.
* Adama's words to the pilots in "[[A Day in the Life]]" come back to haunt [[Margaret Edmonson|Margaret "Racetrack" Edmonson]] when the Cylons jump on top of her Raptor right after the end of a card game. The ship's systems apparently had been powered down as Edmonson can't even maneuver or evade the missile to give the FTL drive a few more moments to spin up.

=== The Trial ===

* Lampkin's opening statement is another prime example of his rhetorical skill. He uses reverse psychology to goad the mob to respond and eventually lead one man in the audience to state his desire to see Baltar die. This display of emotion plays in Lampkin's favor as it would make the judges wary of giving into the mob mentality. Secondly, he cleverly paints Roslin as a fanatic by proposing that had Roslin been president when the Cylons invaded New Caprica, the entire human race would have been exterminated. However, as [[Precipice|Zarek has stated to Roslin]], if she had been President, the settlement and eventual invasion of New Caprica would have never taken place.
** The opening statement is similar to the opening statement in the film ''[[Wikipedia:The Devil's Advocate (film)|The Devil's Advocate]]''.
* Baltar is only being tried for crimes that the prosecution believes can be proven. He is therefore not being tried for the genocide of humanity that occurred during the [[Miniseries]]. Although the show's audience knows his involvement, none of the primary characters in the series who give testimony have to date any hard evidence of his complicity, beyond Laura Roslin's drug-induced recollection whilst dying of cancer in "[[Epiphanies]]". This is acknowledged before, when she tries to challenge Baltar about the settlement of New Caprica. She tells him that she saw him together with Six, but knows that she has no concrete evidence ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I]]).
* [[Cassidy]]'s numbers for the surviving human population are contradictory. It seems that the number the writers arrived at for the surviving humans only refers to the ''civilian'' population of the Fleet, excluding the military personnel. The regular survivor count in "[[Collaborators]]" is higher. The second confusion stems from her saying "the sum total of survivors [...] who settled on New Caprica". This clearly means only the people down on the planet. However her number of 44,035 also includes the ''total'' population left in orbit, both military and civilian. This writing error makes her statement that 5,197 people were lost entirely inaccurate, but aside from that the numbers fit with what has been established before (see: [[Survivor Count]]):

Notes from the podcast:

* The opening teaser is indeed set in the Kobol Opera House that has been seen numerous times. This particular scene in the teaser was a late addition as the director and producers wanted to create a foreboding atmosphere to the episode. This was influenced by the fact that the studio executives were not favorable to the idea of ending the season with Baltar's trial.

* Moore goes more into the original trial storyline that involved the Sagittarons and Baltar. In summary, during their time on New Caprica, the food supply had been contaminated and a famine had fallen on most of the colonists, except the Sagittarons, who had been very careful with their harvests and supplies. This alienation between the Sagittarons and the rest of the colonies came to a collision when Baltar was attempting to have the Sagittaron leadership share their food with the other colonists. Unfortunately, Baltar was forced to kill one of the leaders, and thus began the riots and slaughter directed towards the Sagittarons. It was to be eventually revealed that this killing was a necessity instead of an act of genocide.

* Another component of the original storyline was to have Lee Adama be Baltar's only attorney and that Lee's morals come into play when he obtains a video recording of Baltar actually shooting the Sagittaron leader. The cliffhanger of the episode was supposed to leave the audience wondering what Lee Adama will do now that he believes Baltar is guilty.

* Over time, Moore and the director agreed that this storyline involved too many plot elements that the audience had never witnessed about Baltar. Once the decision was made, Moore completely revised the whole trial and rewrote the episodes.

* Ron Moore hints that Athena and Roslin did indeed see each other during the dream sequence. A deleted scene had Roslin in the the restroom attempting to cool her head down while Athena comes out from one of the stalls. They look at each other briefly in a silent acknowledgment that they did see each other in the dream.

*Ellen Tigh explains her recent actions, that she would do absolutely anything to save Saul, including betraying the resistance. Tigh consoles her and provides her a drink when she asks. She falls unconscious, her drink having been poisoned by her husband. He says that he loves her, rests his head on her corpse, and weeps.
*On ''[[Colonial One]]'', [[Gaius Baltar]] tells the Cylons that they have failed in their experiment and suggests the Cylons simply leave. A [[Number Three|Three]] voices the concern that one day the descendants of mankind might exact vengeance upon the Cylons, should they be left to their own devices.
*[[Felix Gaeta|Gaeta]] suddenly looks up, noticing dozens of explosions can outside the window, signalling the beginning of the [[Battle of New Caprica]].
*Anders and the resistance team has set a series of explosions, mimicking a Fleet attack and causing confusion among the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylons]].

===Act 2===
*The Raptors succeed in drawing off the entire Raider defenses of the two baseships, and leave the vicinity of New Caprica with the Raiders in pursuit.
*When [[Leoben Conoy]] leaves the residence inside the Detention Center to aid with the fighting, he keeps [[Kara Thrace]] inside. She assaults him and tries to escape, but he knocks her unconscious.
*[[Tom Zarek]] tasks [[James Lyman|Jammer]] to protect [[Laura Roslin]] as she makes her way to ''Colonial One''.
*At the entrance to the shipyard, where the Cylons keep the grounded Colonial vessels, a team under Tigh and [[Galen Tyrol]] are pinned down by [[Cylon Centurion]]s.
*The Cylons realize the decoy drones as ''Galactica'' jumps into the planet's upper atmosphere, avoiding initial detection from the baseships. As the ship plunges rapidly towards the planet, mid-descent, ''Galactica'' launches its Vipers.
*Before it could collide with the ground, the ship jumps back into space. The Vipers begin to attack targets on the ground and clear the way of Centurions for civilians to escape. As Galactica falls, nav board in CIC is shown with a map and pencils, with "china" on them.
*As others are freed from the Detention Center, Anders finds his unconscious wife and carries her away.
*''Galactica'' is shaken up by her reentry to orbit. Their plan to remove the Raider fighter defenses to allow the civilians to escape is working, and, according to plan, the two basestars near the planet are coming for them. But when two more baseships appear out of the nebula, Admiral Adama realizes they cannot hold off all four.

===Act 3===
*The battle is turning against ''Galactica''. Her FTL drives are down, most of her weapons are offline and there is heavy structural damage from the atmospheric entry. The basestars are closing in and the battlestar is bombarded from all sides with no hope of survival. "It's been an honor," Adama says.
*At that moment ''Pegasus'' joins the battle, Lee Adama having disobeyed his father's orders. He opens fire with the forward batteries and incapitates one basestar in the opening salvo. Admiral Adama orders priority repairs on the FTL drives.
*When Thrace awakens, she goes back to retrieve [[Kacey Brynn]] against Anders' advice, who soon follows her.
*The Cylons realize that they have lost and decide to evacuate the planet. [[Number Three]] volunteers to stay behind and set off the nuclear weapon that was left in the city for such a contingency. She offers Baltar a place with the Cylons and leaves.
*Several Colonial ships initiate intra-atmosphere [[FTL|jumps]] from New Caprica as soon as they become airborne.
*''Pegasus'' succeeds in drawing fire off of her sister ship, and is heavily bombarded by missiles, having left all of her Vipers and most of her crew back with the rest of the civilian Fleet. Admiral Adama realizes that his son has planned a one-way mission for ''Pegasus'', and orders recall of ''Galactica's'' fighters. With her fighter complement back on board, Adama orders a jump back to the rendezvous point as ''Pegasus'' fights on.
*On ''Colonial One'', [[Felix Gaeta]] holds Baltar at gunpoint, and accuses of having betrayed humanity. Gaeta admits his guilt in idealistically believing in Baltar, but has realized, in the end, that Baltar was only thinking about himself. Baltar admits his own guilt and begs Gaeta to shoot him. Gaeta relents, however, giving Baltar a final chance to redeem himself: stop Three from setting off the nuclear bomb.
*With ''Pegasus'' dying, Lee Adama orders everyone to abandon ship. He sets the ship on a collision course with a basestar as the last of the skeleton crew leaves in Raptors. ''Pegasus'' collides with a basestar, destroying it; the remains of its starboard [[flight pod]] collide with and destroy yet another basestar.
*Kara Thrace returns to the apartment to find Kacey, and Conoy enters with the child.

===Act 4===
*To try to regain possession of Kacey, Kara Thrace appears to give in to Leoben's demands to say "I love you." She does, and kisses him. As they are embraced, Thrace uses the diversion to stab the Cylon to death. She picks up Kacey and leaves with Anders.
*Three searches [[Dodona Selloi]]'s tent, but the [[oracle]] has left. Outside, [[Caprica-Six]] and Baltar find Hera next to [[Maya]]'s lifeless body, still alive.
*Three arrives, asks to hold the child, and leaves with her. [[Caprica-Six]] says Three no longer intends to detonate the nuke, then leaves the planet with Baltar.
*Laura Roslin and a group of resistance fighters enter and retake the now abandoned ''Colonial One'' at Roslin's insistence and are the last ship to leave the planet.
*On ''Galactica'', many people are reunited as Tyrol immediately takes charge of ushering the incoming refugees. When Thrace shows Kacey to Tyrol, [[Julia Brynn|another woman]] walks by and recognizes the girl as her daughter, whom the Cylons had stolen. The mother thanks Thrace for rescuing Kacey. Thrace is visibly and emotionally paralyzed by the revelation that Kacey is not her actual daughter.
*Admiral Adama gives a warm welcome to his son, who was happy not to have followed his father's orders.
*The admiral welcomes Tigh back aboard, and congratulates him on bringing everyone back from New Caprica. With a tremble to his voice, Tigh quietly replies, "[[Ellen Tigh|Not all of them]]."
*The colonists in ''Galactica's'' [[hangar deck]] begin chanting "A-dam-a, A-dam-a..." and carry the admiral on their shoulders in celebration. Adama turns to see Tigh wandering off, numbed with grief.
*Tory Foster tells Roslin that neither Maya nor Hera can be found, and it seems likely neither made it off the planet. Foster apologizes, but Roslin muses that this was part of [[Religion in the Twelve Colonies#The Lords of Kobol|something bigger than them]].
*Admiral Adama shaves off his mustache and returns to a fully staffed [[CIC]], aboard the now very loud, bustling corridors of ''Galactica''.

* "Exodus, Part II" was awarded the [[Awards and Honors|IGN.com Editor's choice award]], following a review in which it recieved a rating of 9/10. This marks the second of such awards presented for the third season, the first of which was awarded for the season premiere [[Occupation]].

*This episode marks the destruction of ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]''.
* The two parts of "Exodus" were originally planned as one episode. However, it was quickly realized that the story was far too large for one episode and it was split in two. This happened before with "[[Scattered]]", "[[Valley of Darkness]]" and the "[[Resurrection Ship, Part I|Resurrection Ship]]" two-parter. It also helped save money because the construction of New Caprica, the extensive location shooting, the number of actors, as well as the special effects for "Exodus, Part II" were very expensive and the production was over budget.
* The Viper Mark VIIs deployed by ''Galactica'' in this episode have a yellow engine-glow instead of their usual blue. This is also the case in "[[Maelstrom]]" suggesting that it is a normal effect in atmospheric flight.
* The moment where Lee Adama pauses to look back at the ''Pegasus'' CIC and says "thank you" is reminiscent of a similar moment in the ''[[MemoryAlpha:Ds9|Deep Space Nine]]'' episode "[[MemoryAlpha:The Changing Face of Evil|The Changing Face of Evil]]", in which, after the doomed ''Defiant'' is ordered to be evacuated, Captain Sisko takes a long look back at his ruined bridge. As with ''Pegasus'', in the next shot, the ship is destroyed. Bradley Thompson and David Weddle, who wrote "Exodus, Part II", were staff writers on DS9.

== Analysis ==

*Baltar may not be aware that most of the civilians have already escaped the planet when he says, in the Gaeta-Baltar scene, "The Cylons have a nuke in this complex. Nobody, and I mean nobody, is getting off this planet alive unless I stop D'Anna."
*The Cylons are not keeping closer tabs on the whereabouts of the launch keys -- no alarms or other warning -- and don't notice that they are gone until the attack starts. Since only a Cylon could enter the facility, and as the only other Cylon (one of the Threes) is incapacitated before the attack (possibly unable to download and warn the others), this appears to be a logical omission.
*While it seems that the Cylons leave the planet implausibly under-guarded, Ron Moore has mentioned in his podcasts that the Cylons do have major operations elsewhere (possibly hinting at the search for Earth story arcs later in the series).
*With the former crew of ''Pegasus'' on ''Galactica'' now, the ship has something close to its standard crew size. (''Galactica's'' crew was deduced to be 2,693 in the episode "[[Water]]", and ''Pegasus's'' was introduced with a crew count of 1,752 in "[[Pegasus (episode)|Pegasus]]" (see [[Crew tally]]). William Adama notes that over half of the crew has settled on [[New Caprica]] in "[[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I]]", and Lee confirms that both ships are at half-strength in "[[Occupation]]".) Military operations should be much smoother now, and repairs to the ship in general are more feasible.
*While the combination of the ''Pegasus'' and ''Galactica'' air wings give the latter battlestar a full-strength fighter wing, the Fleet has suffered the loss of its most advanced and best-armed warship. With it also went the capability to build replacement Vipers. Defensively, the Fleet is pretty much back to the position it was in when it left the Colonies.
*''Pegasus'' parallels its role with the [[Pegasus (TOS)|original ''Pegasus'']] as it fights to the end to defeat two basestars, allowing ''Galactica'' and the Fleet to escape from the Cylons. However, while the Original Series left the fate of its ''Pegasus'' and her crew to speculation, the Re-imagined continuity's ''Pegasus'' is totally destroyed and its crew evacuated.
* Despite the DRADIS distorting nebula surrounding the planet of New Caprica, several scenes and lines of dialogue in this episode clearly show DRADIS to be at least partially functional. This could indicate that there are gaps in the nebula allowing DRADIS to function, or that the Colonials developed ways to operate limited DRADIS despite the distortion.
