:Interesting. However, please refer to our [[BW:SP|spoiler policy]], which should address your questions on the subject. ::Thanks for pointing me at the policy page. I am a little new here so apologies for any misunderstanding on my part. My concern is that these spoilers are in HTML hidden fields, so it seems that they may not be intended to be visible to anyone, even to page viewers who have been warned. Meanwhile, anyone doing a casual Google search on Lampkin will see the spoiler right away (it's only the 6th result on the page). In other words, you can see spoilers on Google that page viewers themselves can't see (without a view source anyway). :::::: Well, I hardly think Google is about to change their indexing scheme for little old us. : It would make some sense if the Aerelon dialect were Irish. Both places have a history of repression by larger powers. Plus, Michael Hogan's Northern/Eastern Ontario accent has traces of Irish influence, and since [[Saul Tigh]] is most recently from Caprica but originally from Aerelon, you could rationalize his accent as being Caprican with Aerelon influences. == Overview ==
:''[[The Fleet (RDM)|The Fleet]] makes a stop at a planet and discovers the location of a [[The Temple of Five|religious artifact]] that may further lead the way to [[Earth]]—for both the Colonials and the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylons]].''

== Summary ==

===Act 1===
* The [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]] is mending its wounds from its passage to the [[algae planet]]. The harvest proceeds well and is into its 14th day, and appears to be closing up shop.
*[[Kara Thrace|Starbuck]] flies from ''[[Galactica]]'' to the harvest camp in a [[Raptor]], intentionally creating more noise than usual. [[Lee Adama]] is managing the harvest operations with his wife, [[Anastasia Dualla]].
*When Major Adama leaves to greet Kara Thrace, Dualla's face barely hides her disappointment and frustration at Adama's hasty departure.
*Major Adama greets Thrace with an admonishment of her piloting, but his comments are very brief; the two pilots embrace and passionately kiss.
*Adama wants he and Thrace to stop hiding their feelings and divorce their respective spouses. Thrace reminds him that marriage in the eyes of the [[Religion in the Twelve Colonies#The Lords of Kobol|gods]] is a sacrament; she has made a vow she will not break. Adama reminds her that their repeated secret encounters would be frowned on by the gods as well. Adama becomes frustrated, Thrace holds her position, and the two are left trapped in their feelings.
*On a [[Basestar (RDM)|basestar]], the little human/Cylon hybrid, [[Hera]], is crying and is not well. [[Gaius Baltar]] is awakened by her cries and visits the child, who is attended by the [[Number Eight]] known once as [[Sharon Valerii]].
*[[Galen Tyrol]] is part of the harvest team. He is repeatedly distracted by something which apparently only he can sense, and keeps looking out towards the unexplored hills beyond the harvest site. [[Samuel Anders]], also working on the harvest, comments that the algae harvest tastes as badly as it smells. Tyrol jokes that the algae is "breakfast, lunch and dinner until we can find a hot-fudge planet."
*After sensing something strange one time too many, Tyrol leaves the harvest camp and begins a trek to a mountainous area. He discovers a door--not a naturally-carved one, but a rectangular door, apparently constructed by human hands.
*Tyrol enters the door and walks through a passageway into an immensely large domed room, carved from within the mountain. In the center of the room is a center spire that reaches high into the structure. The spire is surrounded by five pentagonal obelisks. The center spire has ancient tribal carvings at the bottom, as well as illuminated crystalline pillars atop it. Tyrol, the son of a [[Religion in the Twelve Colonies#The Clergy|priest]] and an [[oracle]], has a fair idea of what he has discovered: The [[Temple of Five]].

===Act 2===
*Carbon dating of the temple indicates that is is approximately 4000 years old, which matches when the 13th colony left [[Kobol]] in search of Earth.
*[[Laura Roslin]] discusses what she knows with Tyrol over [[wireless]] about this special [[Temple|temple]] as it is told in the [[Sacred Scrolls]] in Admiral [[William Adama]]'s quarters. But before they can digest the information further, they are alerted to four [[Basestar (RDM)|basestars]] that [[FTL|jump]] into orbit of the planet and move towards the Fleet.
*Admiral Adama orders the civilian Fleet to escape to [[emergency jump coordinates]], but leaves ''[[Galactica]]'' behind; Adama does not want to repeat the situation on [[New Caprica]], where he retreated with the remains of the Fleet and abandoned the colonists there. Adama chooses to stay to protect his harvest team until they can escape. He and Roslin also agree that, if the Temple of Five has a marker to [[Earth]], they must not let the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylons]] take it.
*However, very uncharacteristically, the Cylons do not attack. In fact, they request communications with Adama. The voice that Adama hears is not a welcome one: It is [[Gaius Baltar]]'s.
*The Cylons request a meeting on ''Galactica'' to discuss the [[Eye of Jupiter]]. The [[Number Three]] copy that Baltar calls [[D'Anna Biers|D'Anna]], a copy of [[Cavil]], Baltar, and the [[Number Eight]] copy once known as [[Sharon Valerii]] board the battlestar under heavy [[marine]] guard.
*The virtual [[Number Six]] in Baltar's mind warns him that, while he may feel like he has returned home, he cannot stay: The Colonials would "toss (him) into an airlock and have a party."
*On the way to the meeting, [[Sharon Agathon]] recognizes the Eight copy as the former [[Sharon Valerii|"Boomer" Valerii]]. Colonel [[Saul Tigh]] denies her entry into the meeting. The two Eights are left outside the doorway, facing each other with mutual looks of contempt and curiosity.
*The two sides meet, with Admiral Adama taking point as the lead speaker. Roslin stands behind, refusing to acknowledge Baltar's greeting or his presence.
*Baltar attempts to take the initiative in an attempt to serve as a mediator, but this infuriates Roslin so strongly that she leaves the meeting.
*Adama receives the Cylon's terms: Leave peacefully so that they can gather the [[Eye of Jupiter]], and they will not attack. Cavil, with a sardonic face, adds the surrender of Baltar to the terms as well, to the former president's and Three's shock, "to sweeten the pot."
*Boomer-Eight tells Sharon Agathon that Hera is alive, but unwell, on their basestar. Agathon refuses to believe her.
*Admiral Adama is not amused by the Cylon's deal. Close to Three's face, Adama states his terms: ''Galactica'' will lay waste to the whole continent, destroying the planet's treasures with his nuclear arsenal should the Cylons attempt to land on the planet. The two sides depart in a state of détente.

===Act 3===
*Admiral Adama manages to get an order to his son of the situation and to destroy the site if the Cylons invade before the Cylons jam all wireless communications.
*Major Adama instructs Samuel Anders to organize fireteams to defend against a probable Cylon incursion. Anders, also realizing what Adama has been doing with Thrace, is very angry and initially refuses to oblige until Thrace asks him to comply.
*[[Cally Tyrol|Cally]] and Galen Tyrol speak in the temple. He tells her of how he was annoyed at his parents and their worship. Cally sees reverence on his face, despite his general mood of disbelief.
*Lieutenant [[Felix Gaeta]] has conducted some scans of the star system of the algae planet. He warns that the sun of this system is in danger of becoming a supernova very soon. Gaeta, who normally is as secular as his commander, finds it very strange how the Cylons and Colonials arrive at this one place at this time just before the planet's imminent destruction. Adama notes that the "higher powers" at work appear to have a strange sense of humor.
*The [[basestar command]], with Baltar in attendance, discuss their plan to get the Eye. Cavil feels that annilihation of ''Galactica'' is the best option with the standoff (given that they are machines that can wait out humanity for years, or even millenia, and find Earth eventually).
*D'Anna, without consulting the other Cylons, has solely initiated the jamming of Colonial communications, and has already sent a [[Heavy Raider]] with a squad of [[Cylon Centurion|Centurions]] to the planet as the basestar fleet jumped in, successfully avoiding Colonial detection. This action confuses the others, particularly [[Caprica-Six]].
*D'Anna notes that, as soon as the Centurions recover the Eye, the other Cylons can destroy ''Galactica''.
*The Centurions on the planet are seen connecting additional materials to their back as they march away from their ship.

===Act 4===
*The Colonials, with Anders at the lead, plan out their defense on the planet. One team will manage ammunition distribution, another team will create [[tylium]] mines.
*As the harvest team-turned-point defense teams leave the tent, Major Adama compliments Anders for his honest, to-the-point direction to the group, indicating that Anders would make a good officer. Anders scoffs at Adama's compliment, inferring that he knows what Adama and Thrace have been doing. When Adama tries to object, Anders tells Adama not to insult his intelligence, as he is aware that Adama is not that only one that Thrace has enjoyed sexual company with.
*On the basestar, in the [[Hybrid]]'s room, D'Anna-Three is savoring the opportunity to see the faces of the final five [[Humanoid Cylon]]s--"maybe the face of [[God]] himself." The Hybrid notes, in her quizzical manner, that the "five lights of the apocalypse" and the "sins" will be revealed only to the "chosen one," lifting her head and staring directly at Baltar as she says "the chosen one" repeatedly. D'Anna's eyes are closed and is not aware that the Hybrid is addressing Baltar.
*Caprica-Six enters and questions D'Anna's intentions. D'Anna dismisses their three-way relationship as she tells of her plan to leave with Baltar to discover the secrets of the Temple. Six is visibly hurt at being left behind.
*The planet team begin their final preparations, led by Dualla. With [[wireless]] jammed, she notes how hardwired observation points are to be created to warn of any Cylon advance, with Starbuck's Raptor taking point with directions to fly to the nearest observation point to relay any sightings. Thrace's annoyance at Dualla's precise direction leads to some catty replies by Thrace, which Dualla ignores.
*As the observation teams take their positions, Starbuck begins her recon flight. As she turns along a ravine, she spots the Centurion emplacement and is immediately fired upon by the Cylon's missile battery. Starbuck tries to evade and successfully manages to relay that she found Centurions before her Raptor is struck by a missile. With the controls on fire and visibility lost, Starbuck screams as she keeps her hands on the flight controls and fights for control of the Raptor. The [[Battle of the Algae Planet]] begins.
*As President Roslin explores what little is known about the Temple of Five from the Sacred Scrolls, in particular, the [[five priests]] for which it was built, Admiral Adama interrupts her, telling her of Boomer's return and asking if the story of Hera's faked death was true. Roslin admits the truth. When she tries to explain the reasons why, Adama abruptly leaves in anger.
*Adama tells the Agathons of Hera's discovery, and both are incensed. When Helo argues how painful it was for them and how Adama should know the pain of the moment, Adama reminds him that, unlike [[Zak Adama|his son]], their child is still alive, and that they should be grateful for that. Sharon Agathon glares at Adama and says she wants to see her child, inferring a greater intention.
*Major Adama reports to Anders that Starbuck's Raptor has gone down, but also tells him that a rescue mission is out of the question; they haven't enough manpower to rescue Thrace and defend their position.
*Six Heavy Raiders leave a basestar towards the planet.
*''Galactica'' sees the Heavy Raiders on [[DRADIS]] immediately. Tigh feels that this is a test to see if the Colonials are bluffing. Roslin believes that they were bluffing until Adama orders [[Hoshi]] to arm of a series of missile tubes, each containing a nuclear missile.
*As Anders argues for Thrace's rescue, Lee Adama explodes in defense of the mission, arguing the point that he has known and cared for Thrace for much longer than Anders, who tells Adama he is going after his wife. Adama's troops hold Anders at gunpoint.
*Unaware how events are escalating around and above him, Chief Tyrol illuminates the carved writings of the Temple with his flashlight and reads the inscriptions, trying to locate the actual resting place of the Eye. At one point, his flashlight's beam moves close to the target-shaped symbol in the center of the central spire.
*The basestar command detects the [[Radiological alarm|radiation signature]] of the missiles as ''Galactica'' targets the Temple.
*Adama authorizes the release of the missiles.

== Questions ==
*Will Adama go through with his plan to nuke the planet? ([[Rapture|Answer]])
*Did Starbuck survive the crash of her Raptor? ([[Rapture|Answer]])
*What is the [[Eye of Jupiter]] and how does it point the way to [[Earth]]? ([[Rapture|Answer]])
*How much truth is there to Anders' claim of Kara Thrace's chronic infidelity ("You think you're the first?")?
*How will Athena and Helo knowing their child is still alive affect their relationship with Adama?
*How will Adama finding out Hera is still alive affect his relationship with Roslin?
*Is there a connection between the Temple of Five and the five missing Cylon models? ([[Rapture|Answer]])
*Who or what is "The One Whose Name Cannot Be Spoken" whom the Five supposedly follow? Is this a reference to [[Religion in the Twelve Colonies#The Jealous God|the Jealous God]], who may or may not be the "one true God" of the Cylons?
*What are the "sins" of the Five that the Hybrid speaks of?
*Who is the "Chosen One" that the Hybrid speaks of? ([[Rapture|Answer]])
*What consequences will Number Three's actions have within the Cylon society? ([[Rapture|Answer]])
*Why does D'Anna feel that Caprica-Six cannot accompany her and Baltar?
*What is the Fleet doing without the presence of ''Galactica''?
*Will there be further confrontations between the two "Sharon Valerii"-type [[Number Eight|Eight]] models, as seen in the passageway tirade between [[Sharon Valerii|Boomer]] and [[Sharon Agathon|Athena]]? ([[Rapture|Answer]])
*Were the Cylons really willing to hand Baltar over to the Fleet?
*When did [[Sharon Valerii|Boomer]] go over to the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylons']] way of thinking? In this episode she clearly doesn't seem to think of herself as human anymore like she did in "[[Downloaded]]." ([[Podcast:Rapture|Answer]])
*Was the Cylon that was pointed out to be Boomer the same one that has been seen amongst the Cylon baseship leadership? If so, then her turning over to the Cylon side was complete by the time the Cylons had abandoned New Caprica.
*Is there a connection between [[Hera]] and the [[Eye of Jupiter]]? ([[Rapture|Answer]])
*Does Dualla know about the affair between Lee and Kara? ([[Rapture|Answer]])
*Will Hera be rescued from the Cylon baseship and returned to Athena? ([[Rapture|Answer]])
*Did Adama inform Athena and Helo that it was the President who ordered the secret adoption of Hera? ([[Rapture|Answer]])
*What were the specifics of the target package selected by Adama? ([[Rapture|Answer]])
*Did the Cylons experience the same trouble navigating through the star cluster that the Fleet did?

== Analysis ==
*At least eighteen people perished as a result of navigating through the radiation field of the star cluster. Most of these casualties are likely the skeleton crews of the ''Adriatic'' and the ''Carina'' and one of them is [[Louanne Katraine|Kat]].
*This episode ends the debate whether [[William Adama|Admiral Adama]] knew about [[Laura Roslin|President Roslin]]'s secret plan to hide [[Hera]] ("[[Downloaded]]", "[[Exodus, Part I]]") -- he did not know.
*[[Caprica-Six]] and [[D'Anna Biers|D'Anna]]'s dialogue indicates that they have been intimate with each other as well as with [[Gaius Baltar|Baltar]].
*This is the first time the Cylons use "human" names on the basestar when not speaking with Baltar. D'Anna is named by Caprica-Six and another Number Three. Cavil's name is used by D'Anna.
*Coincidence (and destiny / predestination) seems to be a major theme with this episode: the humans & Cylons show up at the planet at the same time; the temple is discovered by Tyrol, son of a priest who revered this place; the planet is orbiting a star that will go supernova within days.
*At an unknown point in time, ''Galactica'' acquired at least four more nuclear warheads, bringing the total to at least seven; beginning the series with five and using one to destroy a basestar ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II]]) and another being detonated by [[Gina]] on ''[[Cloud 9]]'' ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]). ''[[Pegasus]]'' may be the source, as these warheads may have been resupplied from ''Pegasus'''s arsenal, which likely occurred during the events of "[[Pegasus (episode)|Pegasus]]".
*When the Hybrid speaks of the Chosen One, she looks directly at Baltar, not D'Anna, who has her eyes closed.
*Kara Thrace's explanation of marriage as a sacrament is similar to the [[w:Annulment (Catholic Church)|principles of the Roman Catholic Church]]. In this religion, a marriage between a baptized man and woman is one of the seven sacraments of the faith. A sacramental marriage cannot be dissolved, but only reviewed later to determine if the marriage was valid at all. If the marriage is invalid, an annulment is allowed. This suggests, by extension, that Thrace and Anders have had [[dedication ceremony|dedication ceremonies]] (the Colonial equivalent of baptism) if such a requirement is needed by the gods.
*There is no "shaft of light" coming from any identifiable source in the Temple at the end of the episode except for Tyrol's flashlight as he explores and reads. The movement of the spotlight is caused by Tyrol's movement of the flashlight. Nothing is shown in the episode that suggests that anything inside the Temple is light-sensitive.
*The [[tylium]] planned for the mines could come from three possible sources: Starbuck's Raptor, the harvest camp's power generators, or reserves kept for the Raptors and other ships servicing the harvest camp. If it was taken from Starbuck's Raptor, this supports the [[Substances in the Re-imagined Series#The Tylium Question|high energy yield of the fuel]] that, at the same time, would not sacrifice the Raptor's flight ability.
*Now that Baltar seems to have some purpose again, he has become more attentive to his grooming, finally trimming his beard.

== Notes ==
*Writer [[Jane Espenson]] revealed that this episode was originally titled "Eye of [[Zeus]]."<ref name="espenson-2">{{cite_web|url=http://www.tvsquad.com/2006/12/11/jane-espenson-on-post-the-passage-questions/|title=TV Squad: Jane Espenson on post-The Passage questions|date=11 November 2006|accessdate=11 November 2006|last=McDuffee|first=Keith|format=|language=English}}</ref> In the podcast for this episode, Ron Moore explains that "Eye of Jupiter" just sounded better than "Eye of Zeus" and thus it was changed.
*This episode, whose teaser clocks in at just over 11 minutes, has the longest teaser of any episode thus far, narrowly beating out that of "[[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I]]".
*Outdoor sequences of the algae planet were filmed near Kamloops, British Columbia [http://www.scifi.com/battlestar/video/index.php?cat=videoBlog&vid=46979].
*According to the podcast, the interior of the Temple of Five is the same set, an abandoned factory, as the large room on [[Ragnar Anchorage]] where Doral is left behind in the [[Miniseries]].
*This episode was screened in movie theaters in six cities (New York, Atlanta, St. Louis, Chicago, Dallas and Los Angeles) by TV Guide as a free promotional on December 14, 2006 one day before the United States airing. The source was a digital copy with no commercials. In at least two cities (Chicago and Los Angeles) writers from the show held a Q&A session after for fans. Also in at least two cities more than one screening was held. [http://community.tvguide.com/thread.jspa?threadID=700013556]
*The eye of Jupiter, also known as the Great Red Spot, is a circular gaseous thunderstorm that has marked planet Jupiter's surface for more than 300 years now. The spot is twice the size of Earth and it is Jupiter's most prominent feature being visible also from the Earth.

== Noteworthy Dialogue ==

*''Cylon baseship requests to speak with Admiral Adama''
::'''Adama''': Put it through speaker. This is Admiral Adama.
::'''Baltar''': Admiral. I can't tell you what a genuine pleasure it is to hear your voice. This is Gaius Baltar.

*''Baltar and Internal-Six discuss boarding the Galactica'':
::'''Six''': Feels like old times, doesn't it?
::'''Baltar''': Can't believe how much I actually missed this place.
::'''Six''': You know you can't return. They'd toss you out the nearest airlock and then throw a party.

*''Lee and Kara, discussing contingency plans:''
::'''Kara''': Can I make a suggestion you won't like?
::'''Lee''': Do you make any other kind?

*''the Cylon representatives, aboard Galactica:''
::'''D'Anna''': The weapons are hardly necessary.
::'''Cavil''' (sarcastically, clasping his hands): Yes. Exactly. We come in peace.

*''The Hybrid, giving more obscure prophecy:''
::'''Hybrid''': The five lights of the apocalypse rising, struggling towards the light... sins revealed only to those who enter the temple... only to the chosen one... the chosen one... the chosen one...
::'''D'Anna''': The Five await me. Gaius, I'm so close to knowing the truth!
::'''Hybrid''': Look into the eye to know thyself...look into the eye to know thyself...

*''During a meeting between Roslin and Adama with Baltar and the Cylons''
::'''Roslin''': (''Roslin to Adama'') I think you can handle this without me. . . if you can stomach it.
*''Caprica-Six confronts Baltar and D'Anna about their secretive behavior''
::'''Caprica''': I'd like to think we that three have shared something, transcended the barriers that separate people, and yet somehow, the more time goes on, the more I find myself on the outside looking in.
::'''Baltar''': Well, that's not the case at all, is it? Because, we three, we're integral, we're part of...

: "When I wrote this episode, the upcoming episode was already well along, and it was called 'Eye of [[Zeus]].' So all the dialogue in my episode reflected that. It got changed to Jupiter later, and I don't know why. It's always hard to get names to legally clear. All you need is one guy named Zeus who lives in [[w:North Hollywood|North Hollywood]] and [[w:Standards and Practices|Standards and Practices]] is all over you to change the name. == Overview ==
:''A [[Bulldog|figure]] from [[William Adama|Adama]]'s past returns to haunt him. His return raises questions about why the Cylons launched their initial attack against the [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)|Twelve Colonies]].''

== Summary ==

=== On ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]'' ===

* ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]'' detects three [[Cylon Raider (RDM)|Raiders]]. Much to the surpise of the [[CIC]] crew, two Raiders are pursuing a third Raider, damaged by Cylon gunfire. [[Kara Thrace|Starbuck]] and [[Louanne Katraine|Kat]] are dispatched. After destroying the pursuing Raiders, they go after the third.
* In CIC, [[Admiral Adama]] orders Kat and Starbuck to escort the Raider to ''Galactica'', after hearing, from the Raider, a familiar human voice and callsign: [[Bulldog]].
* In the hangar bay, Adama and the party are surprised that a human has exited the Raider. A visibly weak Daniel Novacek salutes Adama; Adama returns the salute.
* Over a meal (noodles eaten with chopsticks) Adama asks Novachek how he escaped. He relates a story of plague on the [[Basestar (RDM)|basestar]] and escaping after killing a [[Number Three]] with a blow to the nose delivered through the cell bars.
* Bulldog is debriefed by the [[Laura Roslin|President]] with Adama present, where they tell a (decidedly shaky) story of a mining facility too close to the Armistice Line. When the briefing ends, Roslin immediately questions Adama's story. He replies that it is "his mess" and that he resolve it. After she leaves, Adama kicks over a table in frustration.
* Novachek sees [[Saul Tigh]] in his quarters shortly after Adama talks to him. Tigh informs Novacek that Adama (aboard battlestar ''[[Valkyrie]]'') ordered Novachek shot down to get rid of evidence of their incursion into Cylon space.
*Meanwhile, Adama confesses the mission's actual specifics to his son, [[Lee Adama|Lee]], and his belief that he provoked the Cylon attacks on the Colonies. Aghast at first, Lee Adama tries to console his father, blaming the [[Colonial Fleet (RDM)|Fleet Admiralty]], saying that he was "only one man." Adama responds, "It only takes one."
* [[Kara Thrace]] reviews their Viper's gun film from the fight with the Cylon Raiders and realizes that the Cylons were deliberately missing their target, letting Bulldog get away. She goes to Saul Tigh with this information, who deduces that Bulldog was sent there by the Cylons to kill the admiral.
* Tigh finds Novacek in the process of killing Adama and stops him. Bulldog has flashbacks to being let out of his cell.
* Later, Adama presents his resignation to Roslin. Bemused, she refuses to accept it, and points out that the Admiralty may have been trying to provoke a war, and that he cannot shoulder the entire responsiblity for the holocaust on his shoulders. She then tells him that his penance will be to accept a [[Medal of Distinction]] for his long years of service, and to be a hero, a trait badly needed for the [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet's morale]].
* After sending Novacek off to a berthing on another ship with a uniform, Tigh (now wearing an eyepatch instead of medical gauze) and Adama sit down for a drink in the admiral's quarters to discuss what happened to [[Ellen Tigh]] on [[New Caprica]].

=== On a [[Basestar (RDM)|basestar]] ===
*In a dream, [[Three]] is trying to avoid marines on ''[[Galactica]]''. The marines corner her against a hatch labelled "End of Line." The marines raise their weapons and Three tells them to shoot.
*As the shots go off, Three wakes up in bed with [[Baltar]] and [[Caprica-Six]]. She has apparently been having a sexual relationship with Baltar and possibly Six as well.
*In the Cylon control room, Caprica-Six questions Three about her bad dreams. Caprica Six asks if the dreams are about Baltar. Three indicates otherwise, but does not elaborate.
*Three gives a [[Cylon Centurion]] orders to shoot her, and then delete any information regarding the incident. The Centurion obeys and shoots her in the head. In the moments before she is downloaded, she experiences memories from New Caprica and a startling vision of [[Final five|five white-robed beings]] whose identity is obscured.
*Three awakes in a [[Cylon rebirthing tank]] where a Three, Five, Six, and Eight help her recover. The downloaded Three tells her counterpart, "There's something beautiful, miraculous between life and death."

== Questions ==
*Did Bulldog know of or see other human prisoners during his three years of captivity?
*What class of battlestar does ''[[Valkyrie]]'' belong to?
*Why would a "Stealth Ship" in enemy territory break radio silence and use active [[DRADIS]]?
*How was the ''[[Valkyrie]]'' able to track, target and engage a stealth ship?
*Was ''[[Valkyrie]]''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s mission the only one the admiralty undertook or were there others?
*Was [[Laura Roslin]] right in speculating that the admiralty might have sent ''[[Valkyrie]]'' in order to provoke a war?
*Just what exactly was the "Unknown" craft that jumped near Stealthstar, disabled it, and then jumped away? Whose was it? Where did it come from?
*Who were the five white-robed figures [[Three]] saw in her vision before downloading? ([[The Passage|Answer]])
*Does Bulldog have information regarding the five remaining humanoid Cylon models of which nothing is known?
*How did Baltar's status change from torturee in "[[A Measure of Salvation]]" to an apparent sexual relationship with [[Caprica Six]] and [[Number Three]]?
* Was Adama's whole command staff transferred from the ''[[Valkyrie]] ''to ''[[Galactica]]'' after the failure of the recon mission?
*Why did Number Three go through all the trouble to program the Centurion to erase its memory once it shot her? Was she afraid of being "[[boxing|boxed]]" by the other Cylons for reasons of insanity or because it would do some sort of damage on the Centurion once its processed the kill? ([[Rapture|Answer]])
*How did Bulldog find the Fleet?

== Analysis ==
*''Valkyrie'' appears to be an intermediate step between the ''Galactica'' and ''Mercury'' battlestar designs. In addition, it seems to be slightly smaller than either; this may mean that it is a "light" or "fast" battlestar type designed to support larger vessels.
*Adama and Roslin know each other well enough by now to tell when the other is lying, or is not fooled by a lie, even when others around can't. Roslin has always been the better of the two in this ability, as early as revealing Adama's initial ruse about the location of [[Earth]] ([[Miniseries]]).
*At the end of the episode, [[Saul Tigh]] is trying to deal with his guilt over his wife, but he does not seem to want his job as XO back, at least not any time soon.
*Adama's feelings of guilt over his actions during ''[[Valkyrie]]'s'' mission shed new light on the motivation for his speech at ''[[Galactica]]'s'' decomissioning ceremony at the begining of the series. Also, they explain his near-monomania with safeguarding and/or rescuing those under his command or protection.
*The Cylons are able to detect and destroy the [[Stealthstar]] that had only entered two kilometers into their space. This seems suspicious given the fact that they were unable to detect the [[Blackbird]], presumably a far less sophisticated design. Either the Cylons had more advanced detection equipment on the [[Armistice Line]], or they had advance knowledge of Bulldog's mission.
**It is only speculation that the Blackbird's stealth capabilities were less effective than those of the Stealthstar. The reason that the Blackbird went undetected by the Cylons is that its hull, at Helo's suggestion, was made of carbon composite. There is no way of knowing whether or not this was true of the Stealthstar.
**In addition, the Cylons near the [[Armistice Line]] would have known to look for stealth ships, as they probably suspected that the Colonial fleet would try to gain intelligence on the Cylon military status. After the destruction of the Colonies, it is unlikely that the Cylons believed that the Colonials were still in possession of any kind of stealth fighter and would not attempt to detect one.
**Bulldog was communicating to ''Valkyrie'' before being attacked. The Cylons may have been able to detect this radiation and fire at the source of it.
*Bulldog's story is even less believable given the fact that it took Kara Thrace several hours to gut a [[Raider]] and learn how to fly it. The Raider Kara captured was damaged, but it would still have taken Bulldog some time to adapt the raider for his own use.
**As the episode implies that Bulldog was deliberately released by the Cylons in an effort to direct his anger towards Adama, it is possible that the Cylons allowed Bulldog to gain a working knowledge of the raider.
*Bulldog probably could have stolen a Heavy Raider, which unlike the light versions seems to have a crew compartment and perhaps piloting controls, but then the production crew couldn't have re-used the captured-Raider prop from "[[You Can't Go Home Again]]" on the flight deck set.
*Kara Thrace going to Tigh with her findings is an acknowledgment of their shared semi-pariah status and the connection that was shown in "[[Collaborators]]" for the first time.
*The last two scenes of "Hero" appear to have been edited to ensure that the final scene was with Adama and Tigh. Right after the celebration scene, Adama is seen giving Bulldog a new uniform, but Adama is wearing his everyday uniform. In the final scene with Tigh, Adama is wearing his dress grays from the celebration. It appears at the very least, the two scenes were in reverse order, meaning the episode originally ended with Adama giving Bulldog his new uniform.
*During her experience between death and rebirth, Three finds herself reliving a series of memories from her various lives, including a shot of her in a theater on Caprica in "[[Final Cut]]", her final moments during "[[Downloaded]]", and her discovery of Hera on New Caprica in "[[Exodus, Part II]]". She also has a vision of another kind: the [[Opera House|opera house]] seen by Baltar during the final moments of "[[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II]]".
**This sequence, as well as this episode as a whole, showcases a number of fundamental BSG leitmotivs that have had little to no exposure in their original form since the end of season one/beginning of season two. The music as well as the imagery, reminds us that we've seen the opera house before, and the associated musical themes will likely help elucidate the symbolism behind the two visions.
*Three's flashbacks after being shot by the centurion indicate that she is the same individual who was killed on Caprica by [[Caprica-Six]] in "[[Downloaded]]" and who found Hera in "[[Exodus, Part II]]". It is of course possible that some of these recollections are the result of memory-sharing rather than direct experience.
**If she is the same Three that died on Caprica, that leaves the question how it can be that she didn't get the opera house experience on her first death, even though she was stuck in limbo for thirty-six hours because of the massive casualties at the cafe in "[[Downloaded]]". It is plausible that this Three wanted to die because she'd never experienced death before.
**It is also plausible that God is only just now trying to tell her something. The opera house may act as a cue, a signal sent from God that facilitates reflection on one's own destiny at a pivotal point in their existence, when it is no longer acceptable to ignore their role in God's plan out of arrogance or inconvenience (Baltar, "[[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II]]" ), or because it seems a contradiction of the identity they'd formed by refusing to question their fate (Three, from the final days of the occupation through "Hero"). In both cases, the opera house is revealed to a soul straddling the line between life and death, both in a physical and spiritual sense, and it is perhaps this balance that can uniquely invoke the presence of God, and guide the chosen instruments towards their intended destiny.
**It is interesting to note the central role Hera plays in both of the visions that bring us to the opera house.
*There is at least [[Stoffa|one other doctor]] of some kind in the fleet, because Cottle instructs Bulldog to report to him.
**This doctor is probably a psychotherapist that specializes in some sort of mental trauma issues. Considering that Bulldog was in captivity for such a long time, and his breakdown while attacking Adama, at the very least, Bulldog will need a counselor to help him work through all of the emotional and mental scars that he's endured. Cottle had already confirmed that Bulldog was generally well cared for, physically, by the Cylons.
*Based on the Raider's apparently staged attack, the Cylons appear to know the current location of the Fleet.

== Notes ==
*Laura Roslin reviews a [[:md:Image:Dossier.png |dossier]] prepared for her by [[Billy Keikeya|Billy]] on her first day aboard ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]''. It includes large photos of battlestar ''Galactica'', a photograph of the CIC crew of ''[[Valkyrie]]'', a (mostly illegible) certificate bearing [[Saul Tigh]]'s name, and a cursory biography of William Adama. This biographical information has been intergrated into [[William Adama]] article. Also, an analysis of Colonial dates used in the dossier can be found in the [[Timeline %28RDM%29#Analysis of Colonial Dates |Timeline (RDM)]] article.

*Admiral William Adama names Major Lee Adama to succeed him as commander of ''Galactica'' in his [[:md:Image:3x8-Hero-ResignationLetter.jpg | resignation letter]].

*In Adama's flashback, the admirals are wearing their decorations on their day uniforms. This contrasts with most Colonial Fleet officers shown thus far, who only wear their decorations on their dress uniform sash.

*Admiral Corman's office is decorated with weapons and war memorabilia. Admiral [[Helena Cain|Cain]]'s quarters were similarly decorated. Both individuals seemed ready, almost eager, for a conflict.

*Both [[Gaius Baltar]] and [[Sharon Agathon]] appear in this episode, but neither has any lines.

*In Number Three's dream, the door at which she is shot by the marines is labeled "End of Line". As well as being a metaphor for death, this is a statement repeated often by the Cylon [[Hybrid]]. "End of Line" is a also a reference to the movie [[w:Tron (film)|''Tron'']] <ref name="podcast2">{{cite rdm podcast| episode = Hero| act = 1 | id =endofline| timestamp = 00:16:56 | totalrunning = 00:47:05 }}.</ref> and could also be a computer/programming reference.

*This episode shares some plot elements with the ''[[MemoryAlpha:Star Trek: The Next Generation|Star Trek: The Next Generation]]'' episode, "[[MemoryAlpha:The Defector|The Defector]]," written by Moore. Notably, it begins with a dramatic chase delivering a dubious ally into friendly hands that is later shown to be staged. Additionally, both episodes feature plots revolving around a contested border.

* For the episode, [[Bear McCreary]] created a musical theme for Novacek, called "Novacek's Theme", which was "very much inspired by [[w:Alfred Hitchcock|Hitchcock]]'s collaborations with composer [[w:Bernard Herrmann|Bernard Herrmann]]". <ref name="bear_mccreary">{{cite_web|url=http://www.bearmccreary.com/html/blog/blogmain.htm|title="Hero"|date=17 November 2006|accessdate=25 November 2006|last=McCreary|first=Bear|format=blog|language=English}}</ref>

*In her vision of the Opera house, Three briefly glimpses five white figures. In his Podcast for this episode, Moore implies that these correspond to the final five Cylon models.<ref name="podcast">{{cite rdm podcast| episode = Hero| act = 3 | id =fivecylons| timestamp = 00:30:51 | totalrunning = 00:47:05 }}.</ref>

* Adama jokingly chides Novacek for his "bullshit attitude". The line was censored in the broadcast of the episode on the [[w:Sci Fi Channel (United States)|Sci Fi Channel]] in America, however in the release of the video on [[w:iTunes|iTunes]], in the Canadian broadcast on the [[w:Space: The Imagination Station|SPACE channel]] and in the UK and Ireland broadcast on [[w:Sky_One|Sky One]] the line was uncensored.

== Noteworthy Dialogue ==
*''Speaking to another Number Three after downloading:''
:'''Number Three''': There's something beautiful, miraculous between life and death.

*''Bulldog calls on Saul Tigh at Saul's quarters:
:'''Tigh''': So ... drink?
:'''Bulldog''': You have no idea!
:'''Tigh''' (scowling, unseen): Yes, I do.

== Official Statements ==
*A video blog gives an insight to this episode during filming. <ref>{{cite_web|url=http://www.scifi.com/battlestar/video/index.php?cat=videoBlog&vid=34824|title=Introducing Bulldog|date=2006-10-11|accessdate=|last=|first=|format=VID|language=}}</ref>
*[[Bear McCreary]] discusses writing "Noavcek's Theme" on his web blog:
*: In general, I only write thematic material for characters who matter in the grand scheme of the series, in hopes that the character will return at a later point in the story. In rare cases I make an exception in order to give a guest star a particularly resonant musical voice. For example, [[Bill Duke]]'s [[Phelan]] from [[Season 2 (2005-06)|season two]]'s [[Black Market]] required his own theme, since all the events of the episode led up to his eventual stand-off with [[Lee Adama|Lee]].
*:
*:Hero was obviously another such case. Novacek's mysterious past drives nearly every scene in the entire show, and it was clear he required his own theme as well.<ref name="bear_mccreary"/>
'''Kathryn Ann Sackhoff''', credited as '''Katee Sackhoff''', is an American actress who portrays [[Kara Thrace|Kara "Starbuck" Thrace]] in [[Battlestar Galactica (RDM)|the re-imagined ''Battlestar Galactica'']].

== Biographical Notes ==

Born and raised in and around St. Helens, Oregon, Sackhoff moved to Beaverton when she was 15. Sackhoff originally took up swimming and planned to swim in college, and then be in a competitive swimming career, but a knee injury ended those plans (just as a knee injury ended her character's plans of being a [[Pyramid (RDM)|pyramid]] player). After this, Sackhoff took up acting when she was 16.

Sackhoff most recently starred opposite [[imdb:nm0000377|Richard Dreyfuss]] and [[imdb:nm0001315|Marcia Gay Harden]] in the CBS series, ''[[imdb:tt0285356|The Education of Max Bickford]]''. On the big screen, she appeared opposite [[imdb:nm0000130|Jamie Lee Curtis]] in Dimension Films' ''[[imdb:tt0220506|Halloween 8: Resurrection]]''. She was also featured in the films ''[[imdb:tt0206963|My First Mister]]'' with [[imdb:nm0001441|Christine Lahti]] and ''[[imdb:tt0221218|The Glass House]]'' with [[imdb:nm0000178|Diane Lane]].

Upon graduating from high school in Portland, Oregon, Sackhoff moved to Los Angeles, where she landed the lead role in the MTV pilot ''[[imdb:tt0238384|Locust Valley]]''. She went on to star in the Fox Family Channel series ''[[imdb:tt0251507|The Fearing Mind]]''. Sackhoff's other television credits include a recurring role on MTV's ''[[imdb:tt0190106|Undressed]]'', guest spots on ''[[imdb:tt0108757|ER]]''; ''[[imdb:tt0182656|Zoe, Duncan, Jack & Jane]]'' and ''[[imdb:tt0179128|Chicken Soup for the Soul]]''. She also had a supporting role in the USA Network film ''[[imdb:tt0213708|Hefner: Unauthorized]]''. She will appear in the upcoming films ''[[imdb:tt0496436|White Noise 2]]'' and ''[[imdb:tt0758762|The Last Sentinel]]''.

According to Ron Moore and David Eick in the podcast for "[[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]", Katee is ''no longer'' dating a tackle from the Kansas City Chiefs.

Katee has a dog named "Meatball". Recently, she aquired a new dog from a Vancouver pet store, whom she named Nelly B (after her ''[[imdb:tt0285356|The Education of Max Bickford]]'' character).

Katee is 5'6" tall.

Sackhoff wears a thumb ring on one of her hands. This piece of jewelry was written into the series and is said to be an engagement ring from [[Zak Adama]].

== Tattoos ==

Katee has three tattoos that we know of. She has a crucifix tattoo on her left shoulder blade. In the show, it is always covered up by bandages, etc. when the skin might be exposed (her scene with [[Samuel Anders|Anders]] at the beginning of "[[The Farm]]", for example) as christianity is not present in ''Battlestar Galactica''. Since "[[Unfinished Business]]" it has been inked over with a large stepped pyramid.

Katee also has a tattoo of a Japanese character for "choice" on the back of her neck. In season one, they usually tried to avoid showing the back of Starbuck's neck in camera shots, but an observant viewer can still see it. In Season 2 her hair was longer, but when she tied it to a ponytail it was nontheless visible.

[[Image:Bonafiscalia.JPG|thumb|left|Katee's tattoo on her right arm|thumb]]
Katee's third tattoo is on her right forearm, just below the inner side of her elbow; consisting of the words "bona fiscalia". "Bona fiscalia" is Latin for "public property". This tattoo is actually visible in numerous episodes. At the beginning of the show, they tried to avoid showing it, for example by having Katee tuck her arm slightly behind her in wide-shots, but it was still visible on ocassion, and with time they abandoned the attempts.

Leader of the [[resistance (movement)|resistance group]] on [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Caprica|Caprica]], '''Samuel T. Anders''' was also the captain of the professional [[Pyramid (RDM)|Pyramid]] team known as the [[Caprica Buccaneers]].

==Biography==
Anders was leading his team in high-altitude training in the mountains outside of [[Delphi]] when the [[Cylon Attack]] occurred and the planet was bombarded with nuclear weapons.

Being in a high-altitude rural area shielded Anders and his team from the blasts and most of the radioactive fallout that followed. He and the Buccaneers became ''ad hoc'' resistance fighters from that point forward, raiding armories and collecting caches of weapons, anti-radiation medication, ammo and supplies in the hopes of staying alive and defending themselves against the Cylons.
[[image:Resistance-Anders_Starbuck.jpg|thumb|left|'''Anders''' and [[Kara Thrace]] play [[Pyramid (RDM)|Pyramid]] at the [[resistance (movement)|Resistance]]'s HQ on [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Caprica|Caprica]] in "[[Resistance]]".]]
Anders was able to rally upwards of over 100 people, mostly hikers and survivalists, to his resistance against the Cylons and from the former [[Delphi Union High School]] he was able to strike back at the Cylons for about 50 days. Unlike [[Karl Agathon|Helo]], the Caprica-based (and pregnant) [[Sharon Valerii (Caprica copy)|Sharon Valerii]], and [[Kara Thrace|Starbuck]], Anders seems to be focused more on surviving on Caprica than he is with leaving the planet ([[Resistance]]).

Anders' main focus for a time keeping himself and his resistance movement alive long enough for Starbuck to return to Caprica once again with reinforcements from ''Galactica'' and evacuate them. Starbuck gave him her [[Identification Tags|fleet ID tags]] as a promise that she would come back for him. Aside from surviving and waiting for rescue, Anders planned to locate and destroy as many Cylon hybrid-producing "farms" as possible before Starbuck returns ([[The Farm]]).

Anders and the resistance movement began conducting acts of terrorism against the Cylons after they appropriated Delphi for their own. His aim was to scare the Cylons into believing there is no safe place for them and to kill them in the most gruesome way possible so they remember when they are reborn what it is like to die violently, like in an explosion ([[Downloaded]]).

Anders' physical features vaguely resemble [[Lee Adama|Apollo]], which perhaps explains Starbuck's immediate attraction to him. However, Anders appears much more self-assured than Apollo.

Following the Cylon's reappropriation of Delphi, Anders and his fighters continued their insurgency, and carried out a series of attacks on the Cylons, the most notable of which was the destruction of a café which killed roughly 40 Cylons. Anders, having planted the bomb in a garage, was prevented from leaving when he had to stay and defend the bomb from a Centurion. Hiding behind a car on the other side of the garage, Anders was mostly protected from the blast but buried under some rubble, and was not comforted to be later "rescued" by [[Sharon Valerii (Galactica copy)|Sharon]] and [[Number Three]]. Anders was spared, as he would be a useful source of information. When [[Caprica-Six]] began talking about genocide and God's love, Anders didn't understand, but used the opening to try and kill Three. Sharon knocked the gun out of his hand, and Three was more than willing to take revenge, but all were astonished when Six suddenly killed her. Heeding Six's orders to get out, Anders fled, still puzzled by what had transpired ([[Downloaded]]).

Anders survived an assault by the Cylons at the resistance's headquarters -- the same morning that the Caprica [[SAR]] team landed nearby. When retreating to the Raptors, the Cylons assaulted them ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I]]), forcing them to go to higher ground. After the Cylons stopped attacking them, Thrace feared the worst and had Anders promise to kill her -- so that the Cylons would be unable to put her in one of their [[farms]] -- and she promised that she would kill him as well. Fortunately, this was not the case as the Cylons had left the Colonies and that the survivors of their attack were spared.

After Anders had been rescued, he and Thrace had developed a relationship -- eventually forcing a rift to occur between Thrace and Lee Adama. They had married and moved to [[New Caprica]]. During the 380th day of Baltar's presidency, he had developed [[Wikipedia:pneumonia|pneumonia]], forcing Thrace to beg Lee Adama to release some antibiotics reserved for the ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]'''s pilots.

Since the Cylons had forced the ''Pegasus'' and the defense fleet away from New Caprica, it is unknown whether or not Anders survives his sickness -- though he is visited by a copy of [[Leoben Conoy]] who inquires on Kara Thrace's whereabouts ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]).

{{spoiltext|Anders likely survives his illness, as he and [[Galen Tyrol|Tyrol]] partake in a plot to bomb a Cylon heavy trasport four months after the beginning of the occupation.}}

==Notes==
*"Ander" is derived from a Greek term meaning "Man" (a well known example would be that "Anderson" means "Son of Man", etc). Fitting, given that Anders is leading the last free humans alive on Caprica in a resistance against the Cylons: it's literally a fight of "Man" versus Machines.
