Sharon "Boomer" Valerii is a copy of the Cylon human model Number Eight who is initially planted as a "sleeper" agent in the Colonial Fleet. She is unaware of her true nature and serves for two years as Lieutenant Valerii on Galactica, where she is assigned as a Raptor pilot and also engaged in a secret relationship with Chief Galen Tyrol. After the Cylon attack, her underlying programming repeatedly emerges which leads her to unconscious acts of sabotage. Growing confusion about her true self result in a deep depression and an ultimately failed suicide attempt. After Valerii returns from a successful mission to destroy a Cylon basestar, she shoots Commander Adama in the chest, wounding him critically. She is jailed in the brig and soon afterwards killed by Specialist Cally.

Her consciousness is downloaded and she is reborn in another body. Subsequently, she experiences severe problems integrating into Cylon society and long considers herself more human than Cylon. She eventually works together with Caprica-Six in an attempt to change Cylon popular opinion about humans and she emerges as one of the Cylon leaders jointly responsible for the end of the occupation of the Twelve Colonies and later the Cylon occupation on New Caprica.
Biography
Life on Galactica
Initially, Valerii is a "sleeper" agent, unaware of her Cylon status. As far as she is aware, she was born on the mining colony of Troy, the daughter of a family from Aerelon (Flesh and Bone). Troy itself was destroyed in an unexplained cataclysm, allowing Valerii's background to be established as that of an orphan. Following her arrival on-board Galactica, she enters into a relationship with the ship's Chief Petty Officer Galen Tyrol, which is against military protocols concerning fraternization between officers and non-officers. Whether this is unintentional or a subconcious reaction to her Cylon personality program is unclear.

At the time of the Cylon attack, Valerii is flying her Raptor to Caprica with Galactica's last remaining operational Viper squadron when they learn of the attacks and attempt to engage two Cylon Raiders. However, the Viper squadron is destroyed (their ships powered down by their tainted CNP), and the Raptor is damaged while trying to escape, forcing Valerii and Helo to make an emergency landing on Caprica. After repairing the Raptor, they are mobbed by desperate civilians and undertake an unexpected rescue operation, lifting a number of children and adults from the planet. However, Helo chooses to give up his place aboard the Raptor so that Dr. Gaius Baltar can be rescued (Miniseries).

After being found by Laura Roslin's group of stranded military and civilian ships, Valerii works hard within the new civilian Fleet, assisting Laura Roslin's attempts to gather other stranded civilian ships within the space surrounding Caprica as possible. She finds a number of ships critical to the fledgling Fleet's survival (such as a fuel tanker). After the Fleet (with Galactica leading it) leaves the solar system of the Colonies, Valerii aids in other critical acts, such as the discovery of a tylium-rich asteroid, replete with an active Cylon mine (The Hand of God), and locating a source of water to replenish the Fleet's lost supply after a sabotage of Galactica's stores (Water).

Acts of sabotage
However, at the same time she is apparently supporting the Fleet, Valerii's underlying Cylon programming periodically emerges. Her Cylon programming is the cause of the sabotage Galactica's water tanks (Water). Later, she likely assists a copy of Aaron Doral to access to a munitions store. The Doral copy constructs a suicide bomb which very nearly kills Commander Adama and Colonel Tigh.

Having "awoken" to her human personality shortly after the bombs used to destroy Galactica's water tanks were planted, she finds herself soaking wet. Valerii's human personality becomes increasingly concerned that she is not all she appears. Her worry increases when she experiences a certain "attraction" to a captured Cylon Raider, and is able to give insight into how it can be properly assessed and understood (Six Degrees of Separation, Flesh and Bone). Her concerns are further elevated when, following the bombing by Doral, Galactica's Master-at-Arms, Sergeant Hadrian, suspects her and Tyrol of Cylon complicity (Litmus).

Valerii is isolated from Tyrol following this event, and he later ends their relationship following the arrest of Specialist Socinus (Litmus). Facing Tyrol's own suspicions concerning her activities immediately before the bombing, Valerii finds herself emotionally isolated and stressed. She takes the Cylon detector test created by Dr. Gaius Baltar. Baltar hides the positive test results to cover himself from recrimination from other Cylon agents and lies to the young lieutenant (Flesh and Bone). Valerii finds short solace in his test results but deals with increasing anonymous accusations from others when she finds the word "CYLON" written on the mirror of her locker (Six Degrees of Separation).

Frightened and isolated, Valerii withdraws into herself and attempts suicide, but finds herself initially unable to do so. During her second attempt, she is interrupted by Dr. Baltar who, rather than discouraging her, essentially gives her his blessing on her attempt. Following his departure from the bunkroom, Valerii succeeds in shooting herself, but her Cylon personality apparently interrupts the attempt. Valerii can only severely wound herself in the face (Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I).

After Starbuck absconds with the captured Raider intended for an attack on a basestar orbiting Kobol, Commander Adama orders Valerii and ECO Racetrack to use a Cylon transponder in their Raptor to infiltrate the basestar and place a nuclear warhead within to destroy it. The mission is a success. However, when the weapon would not auto-release from the Raptor after landing, Valerii exits the ship and enters the basestar. Inside, she encounters a dozen copies of herself, confirming her worst fears. Valerii escapes in the Raptor while her copies caress the weapon just before it detonates and destroys the basestar. Back on Galactica, her encounter with her copies on the basestar apparently forces Valerii's Cylon personality to emerge once more, with astonishing repercussions: on being congratulated for the mission, she shoots Commander Adama in the chest, critically wounding him (Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II).

Imprisonment and death
Valerii is quickly restrained by guards and jailed in the brig. During her emprisonment, Tigh attempts to forcibly extract information from her by gunpoint. Sharon's human and Cylon personalities appear to stonewall him (Scattered). Chief Tyrol is later thrown in the same brig cell by Col. Tigh, also suspected of being a Cylon. While imprisoned together, Valerii tries to convince Tyrol that her feelings for him were real and important, but he rejects her and threatens to kill her if she touched him.

Dr. Gaius Baltar later enters the cell, ostensibly to collect a blood sample from Tyrol to prove his innocence using the Cylon detector, but instead Baltar injects Tyrol with a potent toxin that would kill him in a matter of seconds if Baltar doesn't give him an antidote. Baltar interrogates Sharon, demanding to know how many other Cylons were in the Fleet, using the dying Tyrol to blackmail her. Valerii, near hysterics, protests that she didn't know. Baltar insists that somewhere in her subconscious mind, underneath all of her programming and false memories, she truly does know and with a stressful enough stimulus, the information would come forward. At the last second, she cries out that there were eight other Cylons in the Fleet. Baltar revives Tyrol.

Soon after, while being transferred to a new reinforced cell in the brig built to hold Cylons for later experiments, a large crowd of crewmembers jeers at her and calls her a traitor. An enraged Cally breaks through the crowd holding a gun and shoots Valerii at point-blank range. Dying in Tyrol's arms, her last words are "I love you, Chief" (Resistance).

Valerii's body is sent to the morgue and autopsied. The recovered Commander Adama visits her corpse, asking "Why?" aloud, and weeps over her body. Commander Adama gives Cally a slap on the wrist by sentencing her to only 30 days in the brig for discharging a weapon without authorization. Cally is never tried for murder since Valerii wasn't human (The Farm).

Rebirth and life among Cylons
However, Valerii's consciousness does not die. When Cally shoots Valerii, Galactica is close enough to the then-unknown Cylon Resurrection Ship so that her consciousness is retrieved for download into another body. Her resurrection occurs in the Caprica city of Delphi (Downloaded). On rebirth, Valerii rejects her Cylon nature and continues to call herself "Sharon" instead of "Eight," even going so far as to reclaim her former apartment. A copy of Number Three, representing the status quo of the Cylons, is deeply disturbed by this, going so far as to suggest that Sharon be "boxed."

Another "Hero of the Cylon", Caprica-Six, protests vehemently, and Three advises her to get Sharon to change. When Sharon laments the loss of Tyrol, Six tells Sharon of her own love for Baltar, which prompts Sharon to inform her that Baltar is still alive. Realizing that Three has an ulterior motive, the two play along. After a Caprica Resistance bombing, Three, Sharon, and Six are trapped in a garage with Samuel Anders. Listening to the dry conversation, Six suddenly reveals the truth: "Sharon" and "Caprica" are celebrities in a culture of unity, and, through their love for human individuals, have realized the true horror of the Cylons' actions. Using their celebrity status, they could therefore convince a large portion of the rest of Cylon society of their new belief that the Cylon genocide of humanity was wrong. Valerii stops Anders from killing Three, and is shell-shocked when Six smashes Three's skull. After telling Anders to escape, Six begs Sharon to help her reveal the truth of the genocide to the other Cylons. Sharon eventually agrees, and a new path is forged (Downloaded).

Valerii starts to work with Caprica-Six and they are obviously successful in their attempt to change popular opinion among Cylons about the genocide on the human race. According to a Cavil model who is shortly imprisoned on board Galactica, Valerii and Caprica-Six convinced a majority that "the slaughter of mankind was a mistake" which ultimately leads to an end of the occupation of the Twelve Colonies (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I). One year later, Valerii is one of the leaders of the Cylon force occupying New Caprica, along with Caprica-Six and a Number Five (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II). Though her influence among other Cylons appears to have decreased quickly, most evident when she is unable to help Cally get out of detention, as Cally is about to be executed (Precipice). Their initial plan on New Caprica, "to push past the conflict that separated us from humans for so long", fails and the occupation is ended after four month (Exodus, Part II).

Currently, Valerii is believed to be on the same baseship as Caprica-Six and Gaius Baltar, but until now she has not been clearly identified among the many Eights on board the Cylon vessel (Hero).

Notes
*This Sharon is still referred to as the Galactica copy (Galactica-Sharon'), even though she is now with the Cylons, because she was first encountered on Galactica. Fans also refer to her as 'Tyrol-Sharon' (as opposed to 'Helo-Sharon') or just as 'Boomer' (as the callsign is more closely associated with her than with Caprica-Sharon, who is usually just called 'Sharon' and more recently 'Athena').
*Number Six rhetorically asks Baltar in "Flesh and Bone" why he thinks that Valerii got her callsign, "Boomer."
**As shown twice in "Water" and by her destruction of the basestar in "Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II," the Galactica Valerii appeared to have a penchant for blowing things up. This is inconsistent with her namesake from the Original Series.
**Number Six could have been using sexual innuendo when she rhetorically asked why the Galactica Valerii's callsign was "Boomer." For example, regarding "Six Degrees of Separation," actress Grace Park said in interviews that she was so determined to make an enthusiastic lovemaking scene, i.e. copious amounts of moaning and the like, that when the scene director finished they flat out said their footage would have to be heavily edited.citation needed
**Alternately, this may be a script joke referring to the anime Bubblegum Crisis. Bubblegum Crisis generally focuses on police in conflict with rogue androids with a human appearance, referred to as "boomers;" some of these are sleepers. It should be noted that Boomer from the original Battlestar Galactica predates this usage.
**'Boomer' is also a nickname for a ballistic missile submarine. "Helo" is a similar nickname for a helicopter.
*During Season 1, Galactica-Sharon parts her hair on the right side of her head, while Caprica-Sharon parts her hair on the left side of her head.
Biographical Notes
Jane Espenson grew up in Ames, Iowa, where she admits she watched too much television. (Starsky and Hutch was reportedly a favorite.) At age 13 she took a stab at writing an episode of M*A*S*H. She attended college at UC Berkeley, studying linguistics as an undergrad and graduate student. While in grad school, she submitted spec episodes to Star Trek: The Next Generation.

After winning a spot in the Walt Disney writers' fellowship (1992-93), Espenson worked in sitcoms for a number years. She is also a Star Trek alumni, having written the Deep Space Nine season 4 episode "Accession".

Her first staff job on a drama was on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which she joined in the middle of Season 3. Espenson wrote 23 episodes of the show, more than any other writer besides showrunners Joss Wheldon and Marti Noxon. During her stint on Buffy, she wrote the Hugo Award-winning episode "Conversations with Dead People." Espenson would go on to write for two other Joss Whedon TV series, Firefly, and the Buffy spinoff, Angel.

Espenson did a year as Co-Executive Producer at Gilmore Girls, and brief stints as Co-Executive Producer of the cancelled FOX dramas Tru Calling and The Inside. Next, she served as Co-Executive Producer of the sitcom Jake in Progress, which was also short-lived.

Along the way, she also wrote an episode of The O.C. as well as several episodes of the animated series "The Batman."

She reportedly tells people often she has the best job in the world.
The name of the freighter is notable, as it seems to be named after the Greek Titan Prometheus. Prometheus is noted for taking fire from the Gods and giving it to the humans against Zeus's wishes. Given Tom Zarek's continual referencing of Admiral Adama as Zeus, and the fact that the Prometheus is the hub of the black market, an organization which seeks to redistribute goods from the military to the civilians, the parallel is very apparent.

Complaints and Concerns
I hate the spoiler policy. I don't want to be spoiled. I won't be using or contributing to the site significantly until after the end of the season and before you start spoiling season 3.

Character summaries in particular should be free of spoilers like "died in tbe episode Scattered," (before it aired), especially when the character doesn't die in Scattered after all when it finally airs.

Socinus lives!

-MHall

: I personally go by group consensus. If the consensus is that spoiler information is used, then that's the consensus; if it is vice-versa, then spoiler information isn't used (or packaged so as not to spoil the casual reader). As we're an information resource and episode guide, spoilers are a necessary evil. Some of the spoiler information changes from script to shooting, hence the inaccurate statement of Socinus' death in "Scattered"; it doesn't preclude him dying later on due to his injuries, so he may still die this season.

: For instance, I noted that details often change from the initial script to the final shooting. Permit me to use Boomer as an example: her being a human Cylon was never in the previous versions of the mini-series script, but changed -- indirectly -- after one of Ron Moore's friends made a quip about there not being a "By your command" line in the script. (That information came from the mini-series DVD commentary track.) -- Joe Beaudoin 09:41, 17 Jul 2005 (EDT)

Actually, I think that there is no way of making a spoiler-free version for everybody and making it work, too - because some country will always be the last to air the show, and by then, parts of the rest of the world will have forgotten about it already.

There is however one exception: There should really be no spoilers for shows that have not even aired, or at least not anywhere but that episode's summary. Otherwise, there is really no way one can enjoy this wiki and the show. (Happened for me with Home II.) I would even go as far as extending the no-spoilers for not-yet-aired shows for 24 hrs after the show, again, with the exception of the episodes's page. Because, let's fact it, lots of people will use P2P to see the show, because otherwise it would be years until they get to see it. (And if they are unlucky, they would have to see a synchronised version, too.) So the latter suggestion would enable them to look up things here while not having to wait for the show to arrive.

And one final thing: Spoiling from the scripts does not even make much sense - as the first poster on this page points out; and the audio comments imply the same. So my guess would be that spoiling not-yet aired shows will put off users from using this site, which is hardly a good thing, and it doesn't make much sense in the first place to do so, because the scripts will not air the way they were written, anyway. So I really would suggest a <u> No spoilers for unaired shows</u> policy. -- Still not king 12:32, 28 August 2005 (EDT)

::I agree. We gain very little by jumping the gun on upcoming episode spoilers - for example, I didn't need to know that spoileriffic note on the episode summary for Resurrection Ship at all. There's no reason not to be patient with these things. I do not agree, however, with a 24 hour injunction against posting episode details - we should be able to start wiki-ing as soon as it airs in our respective timezones. If we want to stay spoiler free on the west coast, we can always just not log on during the three hour window. Likewise, when the brits start getting Season 2, Part II before we do, we shouldn't force ourselves to wait for the U.S. airings. --Peter Farago 12:45, 28 August 2005 (EDT)

:::I was intentionally proposing just 24 hours - that is what it might take to get to see the show if you have to get it by P2P, and in the meantime, one might still want to check out something -- not the episode summary, of course, but a plain page about a character. It's a minor part of my proposal, though -- the important one is No spoilers of unaired shows. -- Still not king 20:13, 28 August 2005 (EDT)

::::I really like the idea of not posting regarding unaired shows. There's no way to avoid spoilers for shows that have aired already, but the show doesn't really exist until it's aired, in a way (insofar that it might be changed). I also really like the idea of a 24-hour wait period after the first (and thus, British, right?) air time. A day isn't that long, really, and I'm not sure about anyone else, but these episodes make my mind race and I'd probably be too excited if I went straight from the sofa to the computer after watching. --Day 14:35, 29 August 2005 (EDT)

:::::One of the nice things about the wiki system is that if you post something innacurate or overzealous, someone else can come along and tone it down a bit. I'm starting a vote. --Peter Farago 15:03, 29 August 2005 (EDT)

:This is rediculous. You come onto a site that has a quite obvious spoiler policy on the front fage, you go to read about upcoming episodes, and then you cry about being spoiled. Gee, obviously the best way to solve this is to stop people from posting new information. Kuralyov 08:51, 31 August 2005 (EDT)

:The whole debate is a bit odd to me. "Spoilers" by definition have to do with un-aired episodes, and anything written about un-aired episodes is, by definition, speculation. That speculation may be more informed or less, but it's still just that, speculation. You have to watch the episode to find out what actually happens. If anything maybe there should be a reminder on un-aired ep pages that the information may or may not be accurate. Back in the day, there was another sci-fi show, "Babylon 5" which had/has a website much like this one - "The Lurker's Guide to Babylon 5." The Lurker's Guide, while being an accurate and detailed guide to the show, was also a haven for every kind of spoilage and speculation imaginable, which I and many others found only enhanced our enjoyment of the show. --Astarte 05:22, 3 September 2005 (EDT)

::I was also a fan of the lurker's guide. I think an important difference here is that the production staff of B5 (ie, JMS) were very tight-lipped and conscious of avoiding big spoilers. The staff of the Re-imagined series have been much looser, and credible spoilers for various production details have been leaked far and wide throughout the first half of the second season. --Peter Farago 13:25, 3 September 2005 (EDT)
Spoiler Warning
How about episode pages that have not been aired yet get a spoiler tag, so that people that can contribute to them knowing full well that they'll likely be spoiled? Same can be done with character and event pages, so that information introduced to them from episodes not yet aired can also be used on this Wiki without fear of spoiling those that do not wish it. Thoughts?-- Joe Beaudoin 09:39, 31 August 2005 (EDT)

:I'm afraid it wouldn't do me much good, since I read the diffs on everything on the recent edits page anyway. Maybe we could allow spoilers on episode summary pages but discourage them elsewhere? Avoiding the episode summaries isn't very hard. --Peter Farago 12:11, 31 August 2005 (EDT)

I found this problem with the Pegasus ep and related data. I wanted to keep the Fall of the Twelve Colonies page accurate with what we knew about surviving Battlestars, but this is still a spoiler, so the data there is left a bit vague unless someone digs for it. Still, a spoiler is a spoiler. The talk page would satisfy both spoiler-hunter and seeker on an episode article. We'd just need to add a "Spoiler" topic there, and note to people that if you are going to see an episode page for a show that hasn't aired, you are asking for it, literally. At least the talk page has an extra layer for avoiders to have, but because of the nature of this wiki, eliminating spoilers takes away a lot of the research fun. Data's gotta go somewhere and we can't commit the juicy bits for the main page to memory until the ep is aired. Spencerian 12:40, 31 August 2005 (EDT)
:::I dislike the thought of having to move massive amounts of text. So far, I've been avoiding pages to do with unaired episodes. That's easy enough. My main concern is someone clicking through and wondering, "Who the heck is Gina?", thinking it's some pilot who's name they missed or some small character. Then they read about an episode they didn't want to. Or, in another case, someone reading all about Lee and the information going on, at the end, past the most recent episode. I think keeping character pages clear is the better idea. --Day 17:01, 1 September 2005 (EDT)

Subpage?
How about comitting spoilers to a subpage of an article? For instance, Pegasus (episode) would have a subpage called Pegasus (episode)/Spoilers? I believe that would be fairly straight forward, given the title of the subpage. :-)

Then, after the episode airs, we can simply merge the contents together from the spoiler page into the main page of the article in question. Just my view. -- Joe Beaudoin 12:48, 31 August 2005 (EDT)

:This sounds like a lot of work. I actually agree with Spencerian that anyone who clicks on the episode page for an unaired episode is explicitly asking for it. Additionally, those are easy edits to avoid reading. I'm going to go and complicate things now... --Peter Farago 12:53, 31 August 2005 (EDT)
What is a spoiler?
In response to Day's query below ("So what constitutes a spoiler for this new voting catagory?"): I believe a spoiler is anything from an as-yet-unaired show. Examples: Lucy Lawless's character, Cain, Gina, etc. I think the revelation about Boomer is fair game, as that was the end of the Mini-Series. It's hard to escape that fact when most press articles now refer to her as a Cylon. For the purposes of my argument and vote, a "spoiler" is any information that has not yet been broadcast. Is that a fair assessment? -- ryq 16:40, 1 September 2005 (EDT)

:I concur with this definition. I just thought it would pay to be absolutely clear. --Day 16:56, 1 September 2005 (EDT)

:What about various countries using this page? What an Australian considers a spoiler may already be known via broadcast in the states. Using this logic, spoiler pages could end up lasting for literally months after an original broadcast. --Adedward 16:15, 3 September 2005 (EDT)

:: Which is a problem with a "no spoiler" spoiler policy... Different countries see episodes at different times. Fact of the matter remains that there will always be spoilers within the wiki, so there will always be an "all spoilers permitted" policy -- in that way. The current discussion, however, is more towards spoiling episodes that haven't aired anywhere. -- Joe Beaudoin 18:37, 3 September 2005 (EDT)

::: Precisely. Once an episode has aired for the first time somewhere, then it can be said what's really in it. Before it's aired anywhere, stuff "known" about it can change and so could very well be disinformation. Also, regardless of what the MPAA (or whatever the acronym is) wants, once an episode airs in one place, it is very soon available via download on the internet. I don't think this site should condone such downloading, but it's a reality and, as I understand it, Australia is the leader in downloading TV programs. There's also some behavioral patterns that indicate that the SciFi Channel and SkyOne and the peroduction staff might very well be tacitly embracing this method of dissemination with the idea that it actually raises viewership numbers when the things air for the first time in an area. They've, of course, not made any official statement.

::: All that being said, I think the first air date, whether that's in the UK, the US, Australlia or Kamchatka, should be that date after which comprehensive information about an episode should no longer be considered a spoiler with respect to character pages. Episode pages are, really, a finer-grained debate. --Day 15:15, 6 September 2005 (EDT)

::: I concur with Day in that I believe nothing is canon until a) the episode is legitimately broadcast anywhere, or b) TPTB declare some aspect of the show as canon. It has been proven that scenes or characters or plots are moved, re-written or deleted between the page and the screen. I'm concerned that some "spoilers" (ie, rumours, hear-say, etc) may reflect poorly on this wiki, and therefore spoilers should be left out of the main article (and on the Talk page) unless and until they are proven correct. For example, I do not disagree with Lucy Lawless' character having an article at this time (we know she was part of the cast), but I believe what her character says and does, and what plots involve her, should be kept on the Talk page until they are broadcast. On a related note, I am amazed at all the info you guys find about unaired shows. :) -- ryq 16:08, 6 September 2005 (EDT)

== What is a spoiler? ==

Does this mean in the Mini-Series episode article, we have to take out the revelation about Boomer's heritage and move it to the talk page? Or does this new thing mean that information about unaired episodes goes on their talk pages until they've aired (or 24 hours after) when we can then move it to the main page? The Pegasus is a Mercury-class battlestar that was stationed at the Scorpion Ship Yards during the Cylon attack. It survived when its commanding officer, Admiral Nelena Cain, ordered a blind jump - but not before rescuing a number of the shipyard workers, incluidng the Humano-Cylon agent Gina. Gina alerted the Cylons to the location of the Pegasus, and the subsequent attack resulted in eight hundred of the crew's deaths. However, Gina was apprehended. Some time later, the Pegasus encountered the fleet led by the Galactica. ("Pegasus")
Chief Tyrol mentioned during his interrogation by Colonel Tigh that he served aboard a number of Battlestars in his military career, including the Pegasus. There is a good possibility that he is familiar with Admiral Cain, Pegasus commanding officer, and her crew. ("Resistance")
<i>Pegasus</i> was the second battlestar known to have survived the Cylon Attack. It was commanded by Commander Cain, whom Viper pilots Bojay and Sheba served under. It was the only surviving ship from the Battle of Molecay, meeting up with the <i>Galactica</i> in The Living Legend.
The military genius Cain lead the ship against two Cylon Basestars to permit the <i>Galactica</i> and the Fleet to escape. The question of the survival of Cain and his battlestar was always in doubt, though it is generally assumed by the fandom that the ship survived.

: Colonel Tigh's world is turned upside down when his wife arrives on the Galactica -- but is she all she professes?

Summary
* Laura Roslin comes aboard the Galactica as Adama receives a report that Baltar’s Cylon detector is operational.
* Unable to shake Conoy’s words to her (Flesh and Bone), she wants Adama to take the test first; he reluctantly agrees.
* When a lone Cylon Raider shows up, Lee Adama is ordered to intercept, and Tigh is stunned to learn Adama is off-ship.
* The Raider is crippled, and a Raptor is dispatched to gather intel on it, particularly how its FTL drive operates.
* Adama returns to the Galactica on a Raptor with a further shock for Tigh: his wife, Ellen.
* Roslin calls Baltar to check on the progress of Adama’s Cylon test – only to find Adama has cancelled so that a woman called “Ellen” can be tested. Roslin orders Baltar to restart Adama’s test immediately.
* Roslin summons Tigh to Colonial One and reveals her suspicions regarding Adama, and challenging a defensive Tigh over Adama’s behavior in leaving the Galactica unannounced.
* Tigh takes the wind out of Roslin’s sails when he states Adama was off-ship so he could collect Tigh’s missing wife.
* After Tigh has left her office, Roslin calls Baltar and orders him to stop Adama’s test and resume Ellen’s.
* Later, at a dinner in Adama’s quarters, Ellen behaves with a mixture of her old self – trying to play footsie with Lee Adama under the table, and trying to flirt with him over the table – and strange curiosity concerning Earth.
* Adama deflects her probing by asking how it could be that she got aboard a ship, the Rising Star, without anyone having any knowledge or her or of treating her during her alleged 3 weeks of being unconscious.
* Ellen simply shrugs off the questions in her apparently drunken state and breaks up the party with her “drunken” playing.
* As she and her husband return to their quarters, they encounter Baltar, with whome she openly flirts, both annoying Tigh and raising Six’s curiosity.
* After Baltar has departed, Ellen deflects her husband’s anger at her behaviour by claiming Adama wants her, then dragging Tigh after Baltar.
* In Baltar’s lab, a row is brewing over the various tests that should have been carried out; things being even more complicated when Tigh and his wife arrive, and the disagreements and suspicions become a three-way argument, which is broken up when Adama, Lee and Tigh are summoned to CIC.
* The Cylon Raider has stopped behaving oddly, and is on an collision course for Galactica. Alert Fighters are dispatched at Tigh’s order, and the Raider is destroyed.
* Later, back in Baltar’s lab, Ellen’s test results come through and are apparently green. Baltar, however simply states to Six that having everything turn up green makes life a lot easier.

On Caprica:
*Helo and Valerii are trying to avoid the Cylons by running through the storm drains under a city.
*Valerii has a plan -- she claims to have overheard the Cylons discussing a huge base at Delphi, she believes they can steal a ship from there and get off the planet.
*Doral and Six are definitely affected by the fact that even though Valerii has run off, she is experiencing emotions they have never had -- as is Helo.

Summary from scifi.com
President Roslin's fears that Commander Adama is a Cylon are stoked when she learns he's making secret wireless calls to other ships. Then, to make things worse, a single Cylon raider appears near the Galactica and begins acting strangely after being damaged in battle.

When Adama returns to the ship with Tigh's wife, Ellen, an earthy temptress and irrepressible flirt who claims to have been in a coma since their civilization was destroyed, Roslin's suspicions increase. She orders Baltar to screen both Ellen and Adama with his newly completed Cylon-detector.

Meanwhile, Col. Tigh and the rest of the crew watch warily and gather data as the wounded Cylon raider jumps in and out of space.

On Caprica, the Cylon overseers fear that the Cylon Sharon is developing a strange feeling toward Helo — love.
Questions
*Is Ellen Tigh an Humano-Cylon?
Analysis
An episode that cleverly mixes intrigue and humour to conjure a rich tapestry that is somewhat different from earlier episodes – but no less entertaining in the questions it raises.

The intrigue is initially driven out of Roslin’s paranoia towards Adama, but quickly re-centres on Ellen Tigh.

Roslin’s paranoia is fed by Leoben Conoy’s last words to her in “Flesh and Bone” – she is genuinely concerned that Adama is a Cylon, and his pre-occupation with Ellen Tigh doesn’t help calm her fears. But even when the mystery surrounding Adama’s actions is resolved, the intrigue doesn’t let up: just who or what is Ellen Tigh? Human or Cylon?

The weight of evidence for her being human is almost overwhelming. She is vindictive, manipulative, calculating (witness her ability to play footsie under the table with Lee Adama after hearing about his brother's death), but human nonetheless. She has clearly been a destructive force in Tigh's life - and most likely the reason for his drinking problem, and despite her claims to want a reconcilliation, it is clear that little has really changed within her: she is man-hungry, and delights in sowing the seeds of mischief.

BUT - and there is always a "but" in BSG, the writers throw in just enough to create doubt:
*Why is it that - as Adama points out - no-one can remember her either being aboard the Rising Star or being treated for her injuries until the last few days?

*Why can’t the Captain of the Rising Star remember how she came to be aboard his ship. Her "rescue" from Picon sounds so dramatic, surely someone would remember her coming aboard the ship, whether she was conscious or not?
*And why is her interest at the dinner table focused singularly on the subject of Earth? Is it really the "talk of the fleet", or is there something behind her persistence?
*She operates in a manner strikingly similar to a cross between Six and Conoy. Like Six, she is not afraid to use her sexual mores against men; like Conoy, her words seem laced with half-truths and are frequently manipulative and border on the insidious
*Finally, there is her comment on meeting Baltar, “Oh, I know exactly who you are.” On the one hand, it could simply be a result of her recognising Baltar as a leading scientist and (no doubt) playboy, and her predatory nature kicking-in. On the other hand, knowing exactly who someone “is” usually means a person is not fooled: they know intimate secrets about the individual they are meeting, and so the comment is usually taken as a thinly-veiled threat. Does Ellen Tigh know more than she is letting on?

Even the denouement concerning Ellen Tigh’s heritage is open to interpretation: Baltar proclaims her to be human, but then admits to Six he’s decided all results are going to be “green”; as he puts it: “no muss, no fuss”. He won’t even reveal the true result of the test to Six.

Six’s reaction to Ellen Tigh is equally interesting: “Something here, isn’t there?” she states after Ellen’s unconventional introduction to Baltar – and it is doubtful she is referring to the flirting that takes place; rather, her words are a warning, as is her follow-up comment: “You should be watching her.” Six has sensed something in Ellen Tigh, and it is something she doesn’t trust.

So, could it be that Ellen Tigh is a Cylon? Certainly, it has been established that there are 12 models of Cylon, so again, this leaves room for her to be one. But – again – if she were, that would raise an interesting precedent: it would mean that that Cylons can replicate living (or once-living) humans. Were this to be the case, it would significantly alter the balance of things. For this reason, more than any other, it is unlikely Ellen Tigh is anything more than a human woman with an agenda of her own.

Meanwhile, on Caprica things also continue to take an interesting turn. Now fugitives together, Helo and Valerii are finally making an attempt to get off the planet, and Valerii is reaching the point where if she doesn’t admit her status to Helo, he’s going to guess. Above them – literally - we are given further insight into Cylon motivations for what was occurring around Helo, and once again it all seems to boil down to the emotions generated by love: loyalty, need, protectiveness, desire, generosity, anguish, the motivations it creates – all of which appear to be beyond Cylon understanding, even though they are capable of other, baser emotional responses, as witnessed by Six’s tears and Doral’s hurt envy. And there is still that small matter of procreation hanging in the air...

Perhaps the one weak link in the episode is the arrival of the Cylon Raider. Despite all the material the production crew have to play with in this episode, this one thread sticks out from the rest and almost screams “Padding!” at the top of its voice.

As an attempt to heighten concern about Adama’s real motivations (the Raider turning up while he is out and about in a Raptor), it is nothing short of clumsy. As a means of confirming the fact that the Colonials don’t have FTL systems of a comparable size to those contained in the captured Raider, and are thus keen to find out all they can about a “working” version, it is short on drama. Was the Raider really crippled? Was it playing a game with the Colonials - if so, to what purpose? What caused Starbuck to come to this conclusion? None of the answers to these questions are even hinted at - much less explained, leaving the entire Raider situation something that has a big “So what?” hanging over it.

But this aside, “Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down” serves up another interesting blend of character-driven drama that demonstrates that Battlestar Galactica is also capable of some fine humour.

Questions
*The test themselves apparently take 11 hours to generate results (although Boomer’s result in “Flesh and Bone” was obtained in far less time than this – "a couple of minutes", according to Baltar, and about 60 seconds of screen-time.)
**Baltar claims in Resistance that he allowed Boomer to believe she was Human "for [his] own purposes". Does he have the ability to determine other Cylon infiltrators in a much shorter timeframe than he chooses to admit in this episode? Perhaps he was just going through the math in his head - but then why the half-serious jokes about suicide as he contemplates the task?

Notes
*The script was originally called "Secrets and Lies". However, "Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down" is the official title for the episode, according to Ronald D. Moore.
*It is 3 days since the events of "Flesh and Bone".
*There are now 47,905 survivors in the fleet, a loss of 49 since "Flesh and Bone". Compared to other casualty figures in the first season, this is unusually high for a three-day period.
**Are Boomer (tested last episode) and Baltar himself included in this figure?
*Billy’s relationship with Dualla is picking up, despite his attempts to pump her for information
*Tigh’s alcoholism was more than likely kicked-off by his wife – either directly or through her infidelity – or possibly both.
*Baltar apparently has no intention of being honest about the results of his Cylon tests.
*The Galactica has a forward observation lounge that has become a much sought-after trysting-place, with individuals and couples rotated through it at regular intervals.
*The Cylons have established a major base at Delphi, another major city on Caprica.

Noteworthy Dialogue
* As Commamder Adama and Laura Roslin talk in the CIC:

:<b>Commander Adama:</b> Madame President, we are the proud owners of the universe's first bona fide Cylon detector.
:<b>Laura Roslin:</b> Well, that is great news. So... when do we begin?
:<b>Commander Adama:</b> Doctor Baltar would like to start widespread testing as soon as possible, but there are some serious limitations, because he can only do one person at a time and verification takes hours.
:<b>Laura Roslin:</b> So, who's going to go first?
:<b>Commander Adama:</b> (thinking for a second) The test... right. I think people in sensitive positions should go first.
:<b>Laura Roslin:</b> I completely agree. How about you?
:<b>Commander Adama:</b> Excuse me?
:<b>Laura Roslin:</b> If you're a Cylon, I'd like to know.
:<b>Commander Adama:</b> If I'm a Cylon, you're really screwed.
:(Adama and Roslin both start laughing)
:<b>Laura Roslin:</b> Seriously, I do think you should go first. Show everyone in the fleet that they can trust the people at the top.
:<b>Commander Adama:</b> Well then, maybe YOU should go first. (silence) All right... I'll go first.

* As Commander Adama, Colonel Tigh, Ellen Tigh, Apollo, and Laura Roslin are eating dinner:
:<b>Ellen Tigh:</b> So Bill, now the question on everyone's mind -- and, I do mean everyone -- is "Where's Earth?" and "When are we going to get there?"
:<b>Commander Adama:</b> Yeah... that's classified information.
:<b>Ellen Tigh:</b> Oh, there's that word again!
:<b>Colonel Tigh:</b> Ellen, leave the man alone.
:<b>Ellen Tigh:</b> Come on! If there aren't privileges to being an XO's wife, then what's the point? I mean, Bill, we're all family here, so come on!
:<b>Laura Roslin:</b> The need for secrecy is paramount, Ellen. Oh, I'm sorry. Perhaps you don't know that the Cylons look like us now.
:<b>Ellen Tigh:</b> Oh... that. Yes. Yes, I knew that.
:<b>Laura Roslin:</b> It's recent news. Most people just found out a few days ago.
:<b>Ellen Tigh:</b> (thinking) A thing like that would travel fast.
:<b>Commander Adama:</b> Any one of us could be a Cylon.
:(the entire table goes silent)
:<b>Ellen Tigh:</b> BOO!
:(everyone jumps in their seat, but Ellen and Saul start laughing)
*"'Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down' was originally called 'Secrets and Lies', or 'Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down' by Jeff (Vlaming). And when I saw those titles on the script, I knew we had to go with 'Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down'. It was too good. Too good a title to let lie on the cutting room floor." -- Ronald D. Moore podcast
*"'Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down' began life as a very different episode than it ultimately came out to be. It was originally going to be a riff on 'Crimson Tide'." -- Ronald D. Moore podcast
*"It did feel right that, perhaps, there was one place; that perhaps there was one area of the ship, which accepted a window or a port to look out and that it would be a fairly confined space for the crew on these very long, deep space missions that probably lasted months, if not years. And that there might be a place where they can go to and just stargaze. And in this situation, it seemed like there would be a lot of people lining up to try and look out at the stars, you know, a break from the monotony of staring at metal walls." -- Ronald D. Moore podcast, talking about the observation area of the Galactica
*"The long and the short of it was that we had just come out of a very heavy, very dark, very disturbing episode. And the very next episode was supposed to be 'Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down' which was all about a very disturbing, very dark, very (sort of) unhappy episode where our two -- two of our lead characters started pointing guns at one another. So there came a point when I just decided, well, lets just punt. Lets not do the dark and brooding episode. Lets try a different tone. Lets see if the show can withstand something lighter. Lets try something that's closer to a comedy, or as close to a comedy as Galactica can withstand." -- Ronald D. Moore podcast
She was selected as a candidate pilot ("nugget") for Viper training under the command of Lieutenant Kara "Starbuck" Thrace. ("Act of Contrition") While she may still be a new pilot, she has a taste for fighting, and is often on the front lines when the Galactica engages Cylon forces.

Biography
"Kat" is a young woman in her early 20's, and survivor of the Cylon Attack she is selected from relative obscurity to become one of the Galactica's first intake of trainee pilots after 7 experienced pilots are killed in freak accident (Act of Contrition).

Described as a "boonie jumper", she is placed under the command of Kara Thrace for training, alongside nugget pilots Constanza and Perry, with whom she forms a friendship.

Thrown in at the deep end - flying Vipers on their very first day of training, none of the nuggets performs particularly well - Kat in particular failing to make a combat landing on Galactica. This leads to the entire intake initially being washed out by Thrace, prior to being reinstated on the orders of Commander William Adama.

Kat's training continues until she is selected to fly with Lee Adama during a raid to secure tylium desposits from the Cylons (The Hand of God).

She also participated in the defense of Galactica when the battlestar was attempting to relocate the Fleet. ("Scattered")

Overview
: Chaos is rampant as paramedics try to save Commander Adama's life after he is shot, and the Galactica is separated from the fleet.

Summary
On Caprica
* In the Delphi Museum, Helo and Kara Thrace (Starbuck), after Starbuck attempts to shoot Sharon Valerii, talk about her being pregnant; Helo believes her, while Starbuck refuses to accept the fact.
* After Starbuck's attempt to shoot Valerii, she absconds from the Delphi Museum's grounds in the Cylon Raider. (Exclaims Starbuck: "The bitch took my ride.")

Questions
* Does Tigh recall that Gaius Baltar first tested his Cylon detector on Valerii? Or did he know in the first place?
* Regarding the firewall status display: What is not to say that the Cylons programmed the display, or more accurately the GUI interface for it, to show a false reading on their intrusion progress?
* Interesting connundrum: If Kelly is the Galacticas third-in-command, then why haven't we seen (or heard) more from him in the past? It seems to be more or less contrived.
* Just how many aboard the Galactica agree with Adama's decision to jail Roslin?

Analysis
Notes
* Socinus's lungs are filling with fluid.
* Captain Kelly is the third in the chain of command, after Tigh.
* Adama and Tigh served on a freighter together after leaving the military; Adama was responsible for bringing Tigh back into the military when he reentered.
* This episode marks the first (known) attempt at networking Galacticas computer systems.
* Tigh's distrust of Baltar seems evident in this episode, particularly in the reply he made to Gaeta regarding the trust he had in the Lieutenant's programming abilities over Baltar's.
* Tigh's wife has taken residence in Tigh's quarters.
* The Cylons have unveiled a new craft in this episode: an armed troop carrier.

Bloopers
* During the scene on Caprica, Helo exclaims "for God Sake's" instead of the more Colonial "for Gods' Sakes".

<b>Person 1:</b> Statement

and so on, and so on...
* "We shot a scene where I’m in the brig, and Tigh is trying to get in my face, and I’m all, 'Just shoot me now, you pussy.' It was great." -- Grace Park,

* We've almost completed shooting the opening of Season Two, with Michael Rymer back at the helm filming a two-parter written by David Weddle & Bradley Thompson called 'Scattered' and 'Valley of Darkness.' Things have been going well so far, with a good mood on the set and a feeling of satisfaction and pride running through the whole team at their accomplishments in year one and anticipation for year two." --
He continually berated Hector for errors in judgment and seemed to be the more cantankerous yet level-headed of the two automatons.
Apparently knowlegeable about Terra, he attempted to perform a piece from the Royal Theater of Terra, an event interdicted by Sarah -- though after the encounter with the Eastern Alliance, she relented, permitting Hector and Vector to put on a show for the children.
