Armageddon is the first novel in Richard Hatch's continuation series, published 1997.

Twenty years after the fall of the colonies the fleet has long since left the Cylon's behind. Or have they? As Commander Adama's health fails Starbuck and Apollo encounter Cylon's on a recon patrol. Starbuck is shot down and seemingly killed.

Soon after Adama dies and Apollo is left in command of the fleet. But a cylon fleet is closing in and the evil of Count Iblis is rising once more. He also faces internal strife and a nagging certainty that Starbuck isn't dead...

what has happened to the characters and the world
The story picks up about eighteen years after the old series so there are some big changes.

Commander Adama: Dies in the opening sequence. Cause heart attack.

Apollo: Promoted Lt.commander some time ago, becomes temporary commander in aftermath of Adama's death. Driven by developing metal powers he sets out to rescue Starbuck and defeat a cylon armada. By the end of the book he is made full commander, on one condition that he can keep flying vipers.

Starbuck: Fathered a girl child (Dalton) with Cassiopia. Eventually lived with Athena for some yahren before she threw him out when he asked to marry her. Has bounced bettween the two ever since.

Athena: Lt.Col and second in command of Galactica. Considers herself capable enough to become commander.

Cassiopia: Had a daughter with Starbuck but married another (unknown) man. Divorced some yahren before. Appears to have reconciled with Starbuck since. She and Athena still don't get along.

Sheba: Active pilot as well as pilot trainer. Still believes her father Cain is alive.

Boomer: Also teaching pilots.

Baltar: Still in command of a basestar (presumably after being rescued after Adama dumped him on a nearby planet soon after the hand of God).

Boxey: Now known by given name of Troy. Was the youngest person to graduate flight school but Dalton has since broken that record. May have feelings for Dalton. The only one who called him Boxey at this point was Adama.

Dalton: Starbuck and Cassiopia's daughter. Has her mothers looks and her fathers cardsharp and piloting skills. Theres a rumor she was rushed through flight training because she won everybodies money.

Muffit: Status unknown.

Battlestar Pegasus: Persumed destroyed in action. No evidence to support or deny this possiblity.

The fleet: Numbers have dropped slightly as ships have broken down for good or had to be cannablised to fix another. Some groups have settled habitable worlds along the way. (It's unknown if the cylons have found any of them). There is a movement on board to break off and colonise the nearest inhabitable planet rather than go on to Earth.

The Cylon's: No one has seen them in six yahren. However they are still around and they may be changing...

Count Iblis: Has not been seen in yahren. But for a being as old as him that may not mean much

Notes
A yahren is a Colonial measurement of time.

Analagous to an Earth year; plural form is same as singular, "yahren".

Note
Within some fan circles, a yahren is considered to be around two-thirds (2/3) the length of an Earth year, thus helping to explain the relative longevity of Colonial people compared to Terran humans. This reasoning is picked up in Richard Hatch's sequel novels. The glossary in the first novel Armaggedon states that a yahren is 200 days.

In the reimagined series the colonials say year instead, although a brief mention of the term appears in the documents visible at Armistice Station.
