== Summary ==

* Several [[Viper (RDM)|Viper]] pilots have been killed while guarding the ''[[Majahual]]'', an ore mining ship located on top of metal ore-rich asteroid. The Fleet's goal is to gather sufficient ore there to create two new squadrons of Vipers.
* With the [[Resurrection Ship]] destroyed as well as most of the nearest Cylon fleet, the Cylons are far less brazen in attacks, sending only a few Raiders to harass the mining operation.
* ''Galactica'' stays behind to guard the mining operation with their [[CAP]], while ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]'' stays with the civilian fleet at a remote location.
* There is too much debris in the system to use [[DRADIS]] to quickly sight and kill the Raiders. [[Combat Air Patrol]]s are needed instead, using their [[Mark One Eyeball]] to find the Raiders.
* One particular Raider, known as "[[Scar]]" is the cause of the pilot deaths.

As a distraught Thrace leaves, Sharon tells her to be careful.
* When a rookie pilot from ''Pegasus'', [[Brent Baxton|BB]], is killed, Kat berates Starbuck for giving him "textbook" advice. Later, Kat berates a hungover Starbuck again for being late to lead her own pilot's briefing as well as assigning [[Joseph Clark|Jo-Jo]] in her place on CAP, which leads to his death at the hands of Scar.
* Thrace and [[Lee Adama]] talk over drinks, when Thrace propositions Adama for a "quick lay." The two pilots attack each other, clothes flying, but Thrace is too aggressive, which turns Adama's desire almost completely off. He asks her what was wrong, and she admits that her feelings for Samuel Anders are very confused. When Adama tells her that it's the "living guys" she can't deal with, Thrace is so confused that she slaps Adama, then kisses him for his thoughtfulness in reminding her that he is her friend before she leaves his quarters.
* Starbuck is on patrol with Kat as her wingman when they spot a Raider. Both chase the Raider, but Scar is using that second Raider as a decoy and tries to ambush them from behind.
* Starbuck's instincts tell her to check their "six" (rear), which successfully locates Scar but leaves her Viper with moderate damage when Scar scores hits on her Viper.
*Starbuck leads Scar into a canyon on an asteroid, flips, and flies at Scar on a collision course. Kat shouts at Starbuck to break off as Scar is a machine and won't break off. Starbuck realizes this; she is making a suicide run, as her mind begins to drift out of focus as she thinks of Anders.
* At the last moment, Starbuck breaks off her [[CBDR]] run, and Scar chases her. Starbuck instructs Kat to ambush him from behind while Starbuck lures him into Kat's killzone, in a similar ambush that Scar attempted on them. The ambush is successful, with Kat winning her challenge over Starbuck.
* Starbuck fills the "Top Gun" beer stein for Kat and congratulates her. Then, Starbuck praises the memory of the many pilots lost to Scar and past battles. Admiral Adama and Colonel [[Saul Tigh|Tigh]], both laudable Viper pilots themselves in the [[Cylon War]], attend the celebration. Admiral Adama ends the tribute with "[[So say we all]]."
* Training with Helo in the gym, Starbuck says that she could have killed Scar, but she would have killed herself in the process. Helo tells her that backing off and letting her wingman get the kill was the right thing to do. == Questions ==


*Is Scar a reincarnation of the Cylon Raider that Starbuck captures in "[[You Can't Go Home Again]]?"
*The Fleet has obtained enough metal ore to (eventually) construct two new squadrons of Vipers: will they be Mark II's, or Mark VII's?
**It is likely that the ''Pegasus'' production facilities will create Mark VIIs, as the ''Pegasus'' is a more modern battlestar than ''Galactica'' (which does not have these facilities). Since the Mark IIs are outdated models that were only on ''Galactica'' for museum purposes, the blueprints and equipment molds in the production facilities are most likely not set to produce equipment for the older Vipers.
**They may also decide to produce more of the stealth fighters, as they have now seen their combat and surprise capabilities.
*Did Starbuck and Apollo actually have sexual intercourse briefly and then stop, or did they never actually get that far?
*With Thrace serving on ''Galactica'', who is instructing [[nugget]]s on ''Pegasus''?
*If Raiders reincarnate so that Cylon forces can benefit from their learned experience, why don't Centurions? (It was noted that Centurions cannot reincarnate in [http://blog.scifi.com/battlestar/archives/2006/01/#a000114 RDM's January 20 blog entry].)
**The three basic Cylon models represent something of a spectrum of advancement: from their original, purely mechanical form (the Centurions), to the almost-entirely "organic" forms (the humanoid Cylons). The Raiders are described (podcast, "[[Six Degrees of Separation]]") as supposed to be "in the gap" between [[Number Six]] and a Centurion. Centurions cannot resurrect, and they also contain none of the more advanced bio-mechanical technology the Cylons have developed (as demonstrated by destroyed Centurions, etc). Raiders, on the other hand, ''do'' contain "bio-mechanical" technology, albeit not as advanced as that used in the humanoid Cylons. Perhaps the resurrection technology is based on that bio-mechanical "wetware".
**It is possible that Centurions are not reincarnated, as so relatively few were lost in the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies]], that to reincarnate any lost to resistance attacks may not be cost-effective when compared against the need to have experienced fighters against ''Galactica's'' battlegroup.
* Do Cylon Basestars also have the ability to reincarnate given that they appear to be composed of similar bio-mechanical technology as the Raiders?
**Although humanoid Cylons are truly sentient, Raiders are not truly sentient but have the self-awareness level of an animal. Perhaps, although Basestars make use of some bio-mechanical materials, are even less developed, and they do not actually possess a "consciousness" at all.
*As Apollo was not flying in this episode and is in a supporting role, could the events of "Scar" be taking place concurrently with the events of "[[Black Market]]," given that neither Starbuck or Kat are featured in that episode?
**Based on the population counts or Fleet status, it's not likely that the episode events are running concurrently. In "Black Market," the Fleet is united (else, Apollo could not fly to ''[[Cloud Nine]]'' or the ''[[Prometheus]]''). In "Scar," ''Galactica'' and the ''Majahual'' are in one system while ''Pegasus'' guards the rest of the Fleet in another location.
**As CAG of two battlestars, Apollo need not fly in every mission now with the relatively high levels of existing pilots and new recruits from ''Pegasus'' as well as ''Galactica's'' own pilots. Since Starbuck appears to have returned to her 2nd pilot in command status (acting as CAG in Apollo's absence), she manages some CAG responsibilities on ''Galactica'', such as pilot briefings. Kat appears to brief pilots as well, suggesting she is higher in the pilot command chain than before.
*How are the consciousnesses of dead Raiders "stored"? The resurrection ship images only showed humanoid bodies awaiting download of dead Humano-Cylons, no full Raiders nor dissociated bio-mechanical brains awaiting transfer.
**There may have been bio-mechanical brains in storage we didn't see; also, the ship acts as a transmitter and could simply transmit their consciousnesses to accompanying basestars.

== Analysis ==
*The title "Scar" refers to the "ace" Cylon Raider this episode centers around. While all Cylon Raiders appear visually identical, this particular unit has extensive hull damage, whether from asteroid impacts, scoring from near-misses or other debris, giving it a weathered, craggy look - essentially, "battle scars".
*Many of the pilots Starbuck toasts are minor and recurring characters who have died in previous episodes. In the order she lists them:
**[[Dwight Saunders|Flat Top]] - killed in deck accident in "[[Act of Contrition]]", along with twelve others.
**[[Perry|Chuckles]] - killed in action during the [[Battle for the Tylium Asteroid]] in "[[The Hand of God]]".
**[["Jolly" Anders|Jolly]] - killed in action in the [[Miniseries]], along with nineteen others.
**[[Crashdown]] - shot by Dr. Gaius Baltar in "[[Fragged]]".
**[[Flyboy]] - killed in action by a Cylon Centurion in [[Valley of Darkness]].
**[[Stepchild]] - killed in action during the [[Battle for the Tylium Asteroid]] in "[[The Hand of God]]".
**[[Fireball]] - killed in action during the [[Battle for the Tylium Asteroid]] in "[[The Hand of God]]".
*Among those not mentioned were Capt. [[Jackson Spencer|Jackson "Ripper" Spencer]], KIA in the [[Miniseries]], and [[Karma]], KIA in "[[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I]]".
**This may be truthfully reflecting Starbuck's earlier comment that she can't remember the names of all of the pilots that have died. This is acknowledged in the podcast.

*During the "previously on Battlestar Galactica" intro, a clip of a scene which has never actually aired before in any episode was played. Judging by Adama's rank insignia, it appears to be from the time when he was still a Commander. In the scene, Starbuck argues to Adama and Roslin that they must mount a rescue operation to save the Caprica Resistance, but Adama and Roslin are in agreement that it is impossible and tell her they can't. What episode this was originally meant for is unknown:

*During the "in this episode" sequence of the credits, there are two images not seen in the episode; one of Starbuck standing at a distance, and one of a gun being placed before the camera. These could have been cut from the training scene.
* This episode was the third of the most recent four episodes to begin ''[[Wikipedia:In medias res|in medias res]]'', after [[Resurrection Ship, Part II]] and [[Black Market]]. Though the technique was used well in this episode -- aside from the use of the same endpoint, with Starbuck and Scar charging toward each other, for both acts III and IV -- its apparent prevalance in the series here detracts from the episode. (However, [[RDM|RDM's]] [[podcast]] for "[[Black Market]]" indicates that beginning that episode with Lee's confrontation with [[Phelan]] was not part of the original script and was done as an act of "desperation".)
**This episode's use of the flashbacks, going back and forth between past and current events, resembled "[[Act of Contrition]]" than either of the Season Two episodes mentioned above.
**While the openings of "[[Resurrection Ship, Part II]]" and "[[Black Market]]" were a quick teaser from the end of the episode, jumping back to the beginning (to "hook" the audience), this entire episode was structured around such flashbacks. RDM stated that the flashbacks in the other episodes were done to get the audience's attention, (as stated above, "Black Market" wasn't even supposed to have this). "[[Epiphanies]]" also had flashbacks, but these were not ''in media res'' flashforwards to later events, but straightforward flashbacks.
*Regular series writers David Weddle and Bradley Thompson seem more responsible than anyone else for expanding the minor pilot characters as the series has progressed. They wrote "[[Act of Contrition]]", in which the nuggets were introduced, then "[[The Hand of God]]", which was the second time they all appeared (and when Chuckles died). Kat and Hot Dog then reappeared in "Scattered" and "Valley of Darkness", which Weddle and Thompson also wrote. The character of Kat received more development since "Flight of the Phoenix", the writers' most recent entry before this episode.

== Notes ==

*As most of this episode is told in flashback, the survivor count is a little confusing. The episode begins with Kat and Starbuck's final mission against Scar, then flashes back to 4 days earlier, within the teaser. The survivor count is then shown to be 4 less than last week's count. Does this include the pilots killed by Scar? (because most of what we seen in the episode happens in the "past"?)
**At least three people died onscreen in Black Market (Fisk, Phelan, and Fisk's killer), and there was more than 1 pilot killed by Scar, so presumably the survivor count is for the "96 hours previously" section.
*As the episode begins, mining ship ''[[Majahual]]'' has been conducting operations in a thick asteroid field for 29 days.
*Kat is now qualified to fly Viper Mk. VIIs.
*New nuggets are still being trained and added to the Fleet's ranks. Kat's assertion that "no replacements are coming" in "[[Final Cut]]" appears to no longer be relevant with the arrival of ''Pegasus'' and her resources.
**It was mentioned in "[[Act of Contrition]]" that ''Galactica'' didn't have any flight training simulators and so preferred to train pilots that had prior flight experience. With the arrival of Pegasus it is likely that the fleet now has Viper flight simulators and so pilots can now be trained more easily.
*Nuggets enter the [[Colonial Fleet]] at the rank of Ensign after completing flight training.
*Pilot training apparently takes place on ''Pegasus'', with recruits being assigned to ''Galactica'' afterward.
**This is probably a result of the circumstances imposed by ''Majahual's'' extended mining operation. ''Pegasus'' is outside of the combat zone, guarding the civilians, while Galactica was constantly on guard for attack. Logically, trainee pilots would not be deployed to the combat zone until after they got their wings. Now that they have finished mining and have moved on, training may continue on both.
*Kara Thrace retains the rank of captain, but is now serving as a pilot on ''Galactica'' under CAG Lee Adama.
*The Fleet has found an asteroid containing large supplies of vital metals needed to build completely new Vipers in earnest (instead of making do with what spare parts they have). The Fleet has obtained a large enough supply of metals to create two entire squadrons of Vipers. (It has never been definitively stated how many Vipers are in a "squadron", but based on non-official concept outlines various interviews, it is probably 20.)
**''Pegasus'' has Viper production facilities, one of her more modern capabilities that ''Galactica'' lacks. During the episode, the ''Pegasus'' production team finishes its first combat-ready Viper.
*Anders appears in flashbacks (re-used footage) in this episode.

There would be a shot of Apollo holding up Reilly's "skin" magazine and taking bids, etc. This "skin" magazine can be briefly seen when Starbuck is packing it into a box of Reilly's personal effects. (Its name appears to be "[[Nymph]]".) During the following scene when they're talking about Scar in the pilot's loungeroom ("88 hours ago"), if you look closely in the background, you can see [[Brendan Constanza|Hot Dog]] reading it, presumably having won the auction.
*Lee Adama doesn't fly in this episode, and is never seen in a flight suit. A lot of the day-to-day work of being the CAG, such as assigning and briefing pilots, falls to Starbuck.

*The recovered President [[Laura Roslin]], discusses her plan to eliminate black market problems within the [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]] in Adama's quarters with Admiral [[William Adama|Adama]], ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]'' Commander [[Jack Fisk|Fisk]], and Dr. [[Gaius Baltar|Baltar]].
*When he arrives back in his quarters on ''Pegasus'' (Cain's old quarters) Fisk is garroted by several black market gangsters. One in particular stands out as a well-dressed "businessman".
*[[Lee Adama]], severely depressed since his ejection from the [[Blackbird]], has apparently been nurturing a relationship on ''[[Cloud 9]]'' with a woman named [[Shevon]], who has a young daughter named [[Paya]].
*In a "morning after" talk, Lee and Shevon talk in tones that hint towards his wanting of a serious relationship. Shevon appears to dodge these, and requests 100 extra cubits as Lee is leaving since he "stayed the night".
*In flashback scenes, we see a past love of Lee Adama on Caprica. The scenes revolve around a rendezvous between Lee and this girl, which resolves with her running away. The details and intensity of these flashbacks increase as the episode progresses.
*Apollo finds a small fortune of luxury goods in Fisk's closet, including a gold bracelet with the monogram "E.T" on it. Apollo realizes it's [[Ellen Tigh]]'s, and confronts Col. [[Saul Tigh]] about it in his quarters. Tigh says that it was he and not his wife who traded it to Fisk for good liquor, fruit, etc. for Ellen and himself. Tigh explains that Fisk was deeply involved in using ''Pegasus'' as a hub to fence black market goods.
*Dr. [[Cottle]]'s autopsy finds cubits jammed in Fisk's mouth, perhaps as a warning. Adama realizes that Fisk was trying to undercut one of his black market suppliers, and they took revenge.

*On ''[[Colonial One]]'', President Roslin, piecing together her [[Epiphanies|near-death recollections of Caprica]], becomes aware of Baltar's pre-holocaust contact with a copy of [[Number Six|the Cylon agent]] known to the Fleet as "[[Shelly Godfrey]]" and "[[Gina]]". She candidly asks Dr. Baltar, her vice president, to resign. While he never wanted any political power in his life or the office at first, he wants to stay VP now. Roslin tells him it's not an offer she'll make again, but he leaves anyway.
*Off duty, working out in ''Galactica's'' gym, [[Anastasia Dualla]] comes to [[Lee Adama]] to bravely ask if their flirtation while working out is leading somewhere. Adama has no idea what to say, and Dualla takes the quiet hint.

He finds the bruised Shevon and Paya, and decides to take them to ''Galactica'', but is ambushed by thugs, who nearly garrote him. As he is held within a breath of his life, he is confronted by a well-dressed, blunt "businessman", who warns him to back off of the investigation.
*After the beating, Apollo notices the corpse of the man that garroted Fisk. [[Tom Zarek]] drops by the scene in Shevon's room later, and discusses the black market with Apollo.
*Zarek points out that the black market does get supplies where they are needed. Nonetheless, Zarek mentions the central hub of the black market, ''[[Prometheus]]'', a ship so lawless it's practically "off the grid", where you can supposedly get anything. Zarek gives a name to the "businessman" -- [[Phelan]] -- and tells Apollo that he probably took Shevon there. Additionally, he points out that Phelan has given Lee the murderer -- the thug with a bullet in his head -- and that it should be considered "a way out."
*On ''Prometheus'', alone, Lee Adama searches and finds Paya and other children locked up.
*Apollo encounters Phelan in the ''Prometheus's'' bar. Apollo warns that ''Galactica'' is fully aware of his location, and that the battlestar would vent ''Prometheus's'' air into space unless he gets Shevon and Paya back, and the black market is shut down.
*Phelan counters that the Fleet needs the black market; it's like a pressure valve. Whenever a ship falls behind in the supply schedule, the black market fills the need. Phelan states that they sell all things to fill all wants, including ''child'' prostitution. Adama is horrified. Shevon is dragged out and admits to her work for Phelan as a prostitute.
*Taking a gun from one of Phelan's guards, Adama threatens Phelan about the black market crossing the line and after several flashbacks, shoots him in the chest.
*Apollo turns to Phelan's guards, also in shock, and tells them that he's not going to shut down all black market trade because the Fleet needs it for vital supplies whether he likes it or not. However, they continue their business at his whim only. If there are more killings, if they hold back essential medicines or use children, he will annihilate them without restraint.
*Shevon rejects Apollo, telling him he doesn't really care for her and only sees her as a replacement for the girl he left on Caprica.
*Back on ''Colonial One'', the Adamas present their reports to the President. Roslin is upset that Apollo did not shut down the black market, but Apollo counters that they will never have a perfect system and there will always be a black market.

== Questions ==
*How were the black market gangsters able to penetrate ''Pegasus''' security, causing the death of its second commanding officer in a short period?
**It is likely that ''Pegasus'' draconian command structure allows for abuse, and Fisk's own use of the market led to tacit protection of it, including its figurehead, Phelan.
*At the end of the episode, Zarek is seen walking in a crowd on the ''Prometheus'', with one of Phelan's old men nearby. Is Zarek going to try to fill the power vacuum left in the wake of Phelan's death? Was it just showing how everyone needs to use the black market, even someone like Tom Zarek who claims to wash his hands of involvement with it?
**Did Zarek somehow set up the entire incident to get Apollo to kill Phelan for him, allowing him to take over control of the black market?
***It's possible that Zarek is going to fill the gap with his own agents and use it as political leverage against President Roslin at some future point in time. This is just speculative however, more evidence would be required to prove Zarek's hand in the Black Market.
*The woman that William Adama (father) discusses with Lee Adama (son). Is it Shevon, the prostitute (the obvious, close-at-hand issue)? Or, is it the girl back on Caprica (the deeper-seated, much more affecting issue)?
**Could very easily be both, though it is probably the latter of the two choices. If Admiral Adama's relationship with his son was strained before the attacks, he might not know about his son's prior bedroom activities.
*Why hasn't Roslin openly accused Baltar of collaborating with the Cylons after "[[Epiphanies]]"?
**Possibly it is because she has no actual "evidence", and she remembered seeing him when her mind was in shambles dying of cancer, so she may not feel confident enough in this revelation to act on it more openly. However, it does seem to have influenced her to the point that unofficially, she no longer trusts Baltar.
*** Of course, she didn't before, given the contents of her letter.
*Did Apollo's pregnant former love on Caprica actually die, or is she perhaps one of the handful of survivors? Or worse, a prisoner in one of the Cylon [[Farms]]?

== Analysis ==

*Ron D. Moore admits in his podcast that this episode did not live up to his expectations. The long complaint about failed goals he made in his blog was actually about this episode, and not "[[Downloaded]]", as speculated by other unofficial sources.
*It may be that Moore was attempting to work the story as a detective mystery, but fell short of the goal.
*This is the third episode to use a "Flash Forward" introduction to the storyline as a hook (''[[wikipedia:in medias res|in medias res]]''); this was also used just two episodes previous in [[Resurrection Ship, Part II]]. Moore has said that the device was added after he was disappointed with initial cuts of the episode to try to add suspense. The narrative technique also appeared in "[[Act of Contrition]]".
*Apollo's recent angst may appear to some viewers as rather hastily added to the character, much like the issues involving [[Laura Roslin]]'s miraculously fast recovery from her cancer in the [[Epiphanies|previous episode]].
**Then again, it was rather addressed in [[Resurrection Ship, Part II]] when Lee admits to Kara, "I didn't wanna come back alive."
*The Apollo-Dualla relationship, a story thread running since "[[Resistance]]", appears to have been stopped very abruptly, with only Adama's angst as an excuse in ending their flirtation. The manner in which Dualla and Adama speak to each other appeared out of character. Dualla later appears with [[Billy Keikeya]], where he says little, and Dualla appears ready to give Adama up and continue things more seriously with Billy. Actor Paul Campbell (Billy) has been filming a lot of TV pilots and other projects, so he hasn't had much to do this season. But, in comparison to [[Cally]] or [[Kat]], who now seem better developed, Billy's character appears underused.
**The relationship between Apollo and Dualla may have been a contingency plan in case Campbell left the series.
***Actually, RDM said it was introduced because they thought it would make an interesting love triangle.
*Much of the regular cast, including [[Kara Thrace]], [[Sharon Valerii]], [[Helo]], [[Felix Gaeta]], [[Galen Tyrol]], and [[Cally]] do not appear in this episode. Baltar's virtual [[Number Six]] is seen in what some may feel was a distracting appearance, taunting Baltar on ''Pegasus'' and in the meeting with Roslin.
*Col. Tigh is merely a person to be interviewed in Apollo's investigation. Dr. [[Cottle]]'s screen time has increased in the last two episodes, although his character's contribution may be too short for some.
*Like many "pulp" murder mysteries, the episode appeared without a special point or purpose other than to unravel the mystery. Perhaps the writers were attempting to stress the ''realism'' of living in a "Rag Tag Fugitive Fleet" of civilians; yes, there would probably be gangsters carving out fiefdoms who would run drug, medicine, and prostitution rackets. The show took a really dark turn when it made mention of child prostitution. Once again, this isn't anything that several police-dramas airing at the same time of night as BSG haven't done, and nothing is "shown"; a character just mentions in dialog that he runs a ring of this, and the "good guy" promptly kills him and shuts it down. However, the entire idea of the drug rings, etc. is a little disturbing, even if entirely logical.
*The storyline of Apollo's pregnant girlfriend on Caprica was unusual in that this episode is the first mention of such a crucial backstory thread. Considering the extent to which the memory seems to weigh Lee down, it seems contrived to introduce it so late in the series, especially when there have been [[Resurrection Ship, Part II|many circumstances]] in earlier episodes during which such reflection would have been considerably more apt. In addition, confusion arose concerning Shevon's line about Adama's old flame "want(ing) to give you a child." That is, many viewers may not have understood that Adama's old love was actually already pregnant. Further, the incessant repetition of the flashback, which did not vary, did little to advance the plot.
*[[Jack Fisk]] being killed as easily as Cain was implausible. Admiral Adama is now escorted by marines at all times. With Cain's [[Gina|killer still on the loose]], it would rational for Fisk to have some paranoia.
**Phelan and his men clearly had access to Fisk already, so it may not be all that implausible.
**Considering that an attempt on Adama's life has already happened once, marines should have been escorting him from the very beginning. With Fisk and Cain now both dead, there may be a standing Fleet or Colonial military order in place that automatically activates, similar to such real-world orders in the US military.
*The scene between Baltar and Roslin was interesting in its scripting and acting. Roslin is determined to be ''extremely'' polite, forceful, and cheery despite the fact that she's making a power play and now ''knows'' Baltar has something to do with the fall of the Colonies. Viewers should probably expect this revelation to come to a head at the close of season 2.

== Notes ==
*Survivor count for this episode was 49,597. That's one less than last week's episode, "[[Epiphanies]]" in which a suicide bomber attacked the tylium refinery. However, bodies are seen blasted into space, and Adama actually says in dialog "people are dead", so more than one should have died. However, this number is occasionally offset by new babies born in the Fleet, which can account for some small discrepancies.
*Zarek notes that he is the representative of the ''[[Astral Queen]]'', although in "[[Colonial Day]]", he was elected to represent the colony of [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Sagittaron|Sagittaron]]. Given the nature of the conversation, however, he may have been speaking of his status as ''de facto'' leader of the Astral Queen.
*Central characters [[Kara Thrace|Starbuck]] and [[Sharon Valerii]] do not appear in this episode.
*Fisk, Phelan, and Apollo all use the term "cigar" in this episode. The use of the term "cigar", as opposed to the normal term of [[fumarello]], was a curious find in the episode. **Although we won't know until [[Resurrection Ship|next episode]], that seems initially unlikely, as the Blackbird is being used for the Recon mission against the Cylon "Unknown". The episode seemed to suggest that both were occurring at the same time.
*Where did the ''Pegasus'' crew get fresh fruit?
**Dualla explains in "[[Final Cut]]" that their ships have very effective refrigeration units to keep food fresh for long duration duty tours, etc.
*In the absence of Apollo and Starbuck, who is leading ''Galactica's'' fighters against ''Pegasus''? [[George Birch]]? [[Simes]]?
**Answer: [[Louanne Katraine]] ([[Resurrection Ship, Part I]]).
*As for the unknown ship in the Cylon fleet, what ''is'' its function? Is it, as Adama speculates, a Raider factory? Or a command-and-control vessel? Could it be a [[Cylon agent|humanoid Cylon]] creation facility? The next episode's title, "Resurrection Ship," could foreshadow that possibility, as when Humano-Cylons "die" they're downloaded into new bodies. Where would these new bodies be stockpiled?
*Could the new "Cylon mothership" be a command ship that contains the Re-Imagined Series' equivalent of the [[Imperious Leader]]?
*Roslin is commander-in-chief of the Colonial fleet. Could she be the one to order Cain to stand down by citing regulations to Roslin's benefit in the same way that Cain has done against Adama? Roslin could also order another member of ''Pegasus'' to assume command to enforce this. At the same time, Roslin's never been the type to use force, and may use other means to keep this event from turning into a bloodbath.
**Further, Cain doesn't seem to think of Roslin as the "real" president, just "Secretary of Education". Even if Roslin does order Cain to obey Adama, would Cain even consider them legitimate orders?
*Does the Blackbird have FTL? It's a bit smaller than the Raptor and, if it's based on the Viper design, wouldn't have one. At the same time, how is Starbuck supposed to go on the recon mission without one?
**Based on the information provided for the [[Raptor]] and [[Viper (RDM)|Viper]], both ships are similar in size. A possibility could be in the amount of energy generated by both fighters. Seeing as the Raptor is equipped with more surveillance & communication equipment, it may have additional generators to power a [[FTL]] drive. Refer to talk page for additional discussion regarding Blackbird FTL capability.

== Analysis ==
*[[Cally]]'s charged reaction to the drunken Pegasus crewmen ''bragging'' about raping Number Six/Gina repeatedly is probably due to herself being the survivor of an attempted rape, in "[[Bastille Day]]". This disgust with the ''Pegasus'' crew's gang-rape of Gina is interesting in light of the fact that Cally had no compunctions about killing the ''Galactica'' copy of Valerii. Evidently she now acknowledges the Cylons' humanity in at least some measure. Perhaps she's felt a connection between this and her own assault on board ''[[Astral Queen]]'' by [[Mason]] in "[[Bastille Day]]".
**It's also possible that, since her fellow female deck crew also look disgusted and follow her out, women just don't appreciate talk about rape in general. RDM says something to this effect [[Pegasus (podcast)#Act 3|in the podcast]].
*It is also interesting on a dramatic level how the portrayal of Cally's killing Galactica-Valerii in "[[Resistance]]" contrasts with the portrayal of the brutalized Gina and the attempted rape of Caprica-Valerii. It was less shocking to many to watch Boomer being shot to death than it was to watch Caprica-Valerii being pinned down over her bunk and almost raped—possibly because, while killing a Valerii copy is an understandable act of revenge, raping one would be a senseless act of cruelty.
*Talking amongst themselves on Cylon-occupied Caprica, the Cylons mentioned in passing that there was a main Cylon fleet in "[[Final Cut]]".
*In the miniseries, Adama first proposes that ''Galactica'' will go about independent of the rest of the fleet and fight the Cylons. Roslin persuades him to instead protect and lead the fleet on their escape from the colonies. The ''Pegasus'', in contrast, ''did'' travel about independently attacking the Cylons. The condition of the ''Pegasus'''s crew may be an indication of what would have happened to ''Galactica'' if she stood and fought.
*In contrast to ''Galactica'''s nearly evenly gender-divided crew, the crew of the ''Pegasus'' seems predominantly male to a very high degree. Admiral Cain was the only female aboard ''Pegasus'' with a speaking role, with only a couple other females visible in the hallways or in the ''Pegasus'' ready room. This stands in notable contrast to Ron Moore's egalitarian vision of gender issues in the military, and appears to have been an intentional decision made during production. In addition, the dialogue of the drunken ''Pegasus'' crewmen suggests they've perhaps forgotten how to act around women— they either ignore or fail to understand Cally and Selix's disgust with their talk about gang-raping Gina. This may be a contributing factor to the behavior of the ''Pegasus'' crew—the relative paucity of women aboard ''Pegasus'' and the resulting sexual frustration could have led to the overly regimented, authoritarian, and brutal culture the crew developed, culminating in the senseless, repeated gang rape of the Cylon prisoner [[Gina]].
*Not simply relying on her rank, Admiral Cain asserts her dominance in more subtle ways as soon as she sets foot on ''Galactica''. Despite the fact that she's bringing one ship to join dozens, she welcomes ''Galactica'' back to the Colonial Fleet, thus defining the Fleet as wherever she is. Later she tells Roslin 'You look like I just shot your dog' when she asserts her authority over Adama. Both of these acts give some show of being welcoming or friendly, but also claim her spot at the top of the food chain.
**Although ''Pegasus'' is only one ship, it's only one of two battlestars in the fleet. Being a [[Mercury class battlestar]], it is also more advanced than ''Galactica'', which was scheduled to be decommissioned. As such, the older battlestar hasn't the resources that ''Pegasus'' does. Although Cain's statement obviously shows her enlarged ego, it rings true purely from the standpoint of military prowess.
**Cain is also the higher ranking officer—with the rest of Colonial Fleet destroyed, command naturally fell to her, not Adama, despite her absence from the remainder of the fleet. So by military regulation her statement also rings true.
*[[Peter Laird|Laird]], ''Pegasus' '' deck chief, refers to events since "the war happened". Admiral Cain and her ''Pegasus'' crew seem to still consider fighting against the Cylons to be a war, while in the [[Miniseries]] Commander Adama admitted that "the war is over, we lost".
**Laird is still on ''Galactica'' during the period immediately leading up to the assault on Caprica-Valerii. As the deck chief of the ''Pegasus'' wouldn't his presence be required on his own ship or has he, like Apollo and Starbuck, been reassigned?
***According to [[Pegasus (podcast)#Act 3|the podcast]] in a scene deleted for time, Laird is reassigned as deck chief of ''Galactica'' over Tyrol. Of course, that raises the question of who is now performing deck chief duty on Pegasus.
*Thrace's criticism of Taylor's reconaissance plan - that the Cylons would never leave such an obvious blind spot unaccounted for - is the same criticism she made of Tigh's initial assault plan in [[The Hand of God (RDM)|The Hand of God]].

*Ron D. Moore stated in his podcast that there were a number of scenes filmed for this episode that had to be deleted for time, but that he expects to be edited back into the episode for the DVD release. According to Moore, although most episode rough cuts run a little overtime and one or two scenes have to be edited out, "Pegasus" had more than a full extra Act worth of material left over. The full episode would have been an hour and 15 minutes long. Moore tried to put in more scenes to push it to 90 minutes, in which case Scifi Channel would air it as a 90 minute special (as they had done in the past for "Stargate Sg-1" on occasion), but ultimately not enough material could be included in "Pegasus" to make it 90 minutes long without detracting from story quality; they were left with an episode that was too short to be a 90 minute special, but also too long to include all filmed scenes in a one hour episode. Deleted scenes, which Moore says will be restored in the DVD release, include:
**A scene when Adama, Tigh, and Roslin are heading to the flight deck to meet Admiral Cain when she first arrives on the ship, and while they're walking Adama and Tigh give Roslin a brief biography of Cain; who she is, that she was an up and coming officer promoted to Admiral over several other possible choices, etc.

The subplot would show how Roslin wanted ''Pegasus'' to provide machine parts for repairs to the civilian Fleet, and that after these are repeatedly ignored the civilian fleet ultimately goes "on strike" by refusing to give ''Pegasus'' more [[tylium]] fuel. It would also expand on Cain's refusal to acknowledge Roslin as the President (and therefore her superior as Commander-in-Chief).
*Moore also stated in the podcast that an alternate version of the attempted rape scene with Boomer was also filmed in which the rape was actually underway when Tyrol and Helo intervened. * [[Laura Roslin]]'s illness has reached a critical level. While she is still well enough to walk, Dr. [[Cottle]] gives her approximately one month to live.
* [[Karl Agathon|Helo]] has become ''persona non grata'' to many of the crew who distrust him due to his romance with the Caprica copy of [[Humano-Cylon]] [[Sharon Valerii (Caprica copy)|Sharon Valerii]].
* Many of the crew, even the generally level-headed and reliable Lieutenant [[Felix Gaeta|Gaeta]], are showing the strain of the apparent futility and fatigue of running from the Cylons.
* Chief [[Galen Tyrol|Tyrol]], with also little else to do with scrapped Vipers, begins a project to craft a new fighter. Initially many crew are very skeptical, but soon many others help Tyrol.

Gaeta and Baltar work together to figure a way to rid the ship of it by erasing the hard drives of all computers. Doing this, however, would leave the ship a sitting duck for an attack while time is needed to restore function and data to the computers.
* Adama, after asking the advice of the President, allows the Caprica Valerii to connect herself to the ship's mainframe and communication systems while Gaeta and Baltar erase the hard drives of all computers.
* A Cylon fighter armada consisting of hundreds of [[Raider]]s and [[Heavy Raider]]s attempts to activate the bomb. However, Valerii responds by transmitting a version of the same bomb to the Cylon fleet, disabling it as the Cylons did the Colonial fleet during the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies]]. The Viper squadrons annihilate the helpless Cylon fleet in a joyous moment of payback.
* Kara Thrace takes the new fighter, dubbed the [[Blackbird]], for a initially ungainly test spin. This fighter was designed for speed, and delivers it. Lee Adama, in a Viper chase plane, is horrified when the Blackbird disappears, but Kara rises above to face his ship quietly, proving the new fighter's stealth ability.
* In a ceremony similar to the one given to Commander Adama in the [[Miniseries]], President Roslin inspects and christens the new fighter. Many sign the ship. Tyrol reveals the name of this first fighter: ''Laura''.
* The mere work on the new fighter renewed the creativity and hope of the crew--a reason why Adama allowed its construction to continue, despite the logic bomb crisis.

== Questions ==
* This episode was rare in that Baltar's [[Number Six]] was completely absent in this episode, despite the Cylon-rich plot. What would she have said about Valerii's aid or the logic bomb?
**According to RDM's podcast Number Six was in this episode in one scene which was in the end deleted for time; in it Baltar gets up from working on the Cylon virus with Gaeta and has a conversation with Six standing in the middle of CIC.
*It is unlikely that the Caprica-Valerii's presence on ''Galactica'' is a secret to her crew since extraordinary measures were made to house her. It is possible that Adama is using a lie-of-omission to cover the existence of the second Valerii to the civilian fleet, since it is very likely that her likeness has been distributed to the rest of the fleet as a warning to keep a watch for other copies, a policy established in a Season 1 episode. While is it improbable that the death of the Galactica-Valerii could be fully contained, it is probable that Adama realizes that rumor and innuendo will disguise the fact that they harbor a second copy for interrogation purposes. In the [[Final Cut|previous episode]], Commander Adama angrily ordered [[D'anna Biers]] not to reveal her existence because it could divide the Fleet. There is likely an order to all under Adama's command not to discuss the existence of the second Valerii outside of military circles, although it would not likely stop them from discussing the matter amongst themselves.
*Is [[Anastasia Dualla|Dualla]] attracted to Apollo (or vice versa)? Dualla seemed to "check out" Apollo's "backside" in "[[Resistance]]", and now she's in close physical contact with him. And Apollo has what almost might be called a jealous look when Billy shows up. Yet in "[[Home, Part I]]" Lee let it slip in conversation that he "loves" Starbuck (he didn't necessarily say it in more than platonic/fraternal way, however).
*Helo got angry at Chief Tyrol for calling Boomer a [[Toaster]]; is this a sign that Helo is thinking more sympathetically towards the Cylons than before? Like the Cylons, does he consider it an "offensive racial epithet"?
* Also with regard to Helo, where did he get the idea to use carbon-composite on the Blackbird? Is that something he thought up himself, or perhaps did Caprica-Valerii 'point' him in that direction?
**There is nothing to indicate that Caprica-Sharon influenced his decision for this.
*Is order on ''Galactica'' starting to break down? In the [[Miniseries]] Starbuck was put in the [[brig]] for striking a superior officer. Now, Starbuck assaulted Racetrack but there were was no visible punishment, and Tyrol got into a fight with Helo (who outranks him), also with no shown punishment. The deck crews aren't bothering to hide the [[Wikipedia:still|still]] they built as much as before, going to far as to have a large "Welcome Back Cally" party with its products in public. Col. Tigh makes a halfhearted verbal chastisement of Tyrol when Tigh finds the still, but doesn't do anything about it and ends up taking a jar of booze for his own use. Also, even Lt. Gaeta is now snapping back at the command officers, shouting and even [[frak|cursing]].
*Was the software code Helo showed to Caprica-Boomer only a virus or did it contain instructions outside the scope of destabilizing and controlling ''Galactica's'' systems? Valerii's response to the code seemed to indicate it had affected her on some level. Perhaps was she merely compiling it in her head.
*If the Cylons are so interested and cautious about protecting Caprica-Boomer and her unborn child as stated by [[Aaron Doral]] in "[[Final Cut]]", why then are they willing to launch a massive assault against ''Galactica?''
*To what extent is Cylon knowledge & experiences shared? We know that [[Cylon agent]]s can transfer their consciousness to other copies of themselves ([[Miniseries]]), but are other Cylon models (such as the drones) interconnected? They would have to be on some level for Caprica-Boomer's trick to work. Is there some 'collective consciousness' at work (similar to the 'Borg' in Star Trek)?
**Caprica-Boomer seemed to imply in "[[Home, Part I]]" that she wasn't involuntarily in constant communication with the other Cylons through some sort of wireless communication net. She probably "switched off" her connection when she went on the run for real in "[[Flesh and Bone]]", because two Cylons talking amongst themselves (Six and Doral) said that they didn't know what she was planning (or thinking).

== Analysis ==
* While Humano-Cylons appear human to the cellular level, Sharon could control a fiber-optic connection inserted into her forearm. This suggests that the humanoid Cylon design uses light-sensitive cells disguised as regular cells in their forearms as data access nodes, probably involving the cells interacting with her [[Silica Pathways|Silica Relays]] in her brain, the last vestiges of the humanoid Cylons' mechanical nature. Based on Valerii's extreme discomfort in having to cut herself to interface with the data line in this way, it could be presumed that this is not a typical practice for Humano-Cylons.
* Continuing from "[[Resistance]]", Dualla is shown being attracted to Apollo.
* Tyrol's comment to Lee Adama on the lack of miracles, and his answer to the problem, may remind some of another [http://www.startrek.com/startrek/view/series/TOS/character/1112502.html great miracle worker] of television science fiction.
* Despite Valerii's belief that she has become a "liability" to the Cylons, the previous episode made it clear that at least some Cylons considered the survival of her baby a paramount concern. The virus, installed before her arrival, was probably oblivious to this, but the massive fleet the Cylons deployed to interdict ''Galactica'' could not have been. Additionally, an earnest attack would almost certainly have included a [[Basestar (RDM)|basestar]]. We must therefore assume that the Cylons had a more complicated motive in making such a massive material sacrifice.
** Perhaps they hoped to furnish Valerii with an opportunity to demonstrate her loyalty and strategic value to the fleet, thus enabling her to ensure her future safety.
** Alternatively, perhaps the fleet was sent to ''remove'' the logic bomb from ''Galactica'', now that it was putting Valerii in harm's way. However, why so many, and why did one of the Raiders try to activate the logic bomb?
** Perhaps there are different Cylon factions working at cross purposes.
**The armada contained several Heavy Raiders as well--perhaps the Cylons were planning on boarding Galactica and taking Sharon by force.
**Sharon could have just been "assuming" that she was a liability, and simply be wrong. The virus itself was introduced into the ship in "[[Scattered]]" and that was before Caprica-Boomer arrived on ''Galactica.'' In "[[Final Cut]]" it was established that by that episode the Cylons were surprised that Sharon was still alive (they didn't know): perhaps they didn't know she was on ''Galactica'' up to that point. But by this point, however, the Cylons knew Sharon was on ''Galactica'' when the attack was launched. The virus appears to have just been acting out its function since "[[Scattered]]" (ignorant that its actions would destroy Sharon). However, this doesn't clearly explain why the massive Raider attack was launched.
* Our heroes passed up a major opportunity by destroying the Cylon fleet. Adama revoked Roslin's presidency on the basis of the misappropriation of a SINGLE captured Cylon Raider, yet they eliminated dozens of crippled-but-serviceable assets in the name of retribution. After all that work to create a single new fighter, wouldn't a squadron of superior Raiders be worth maintaining in the unused starboard flight pod?
**A point against the idea of capturing a Raider involves the lucky manner in obtaining the first one. The Raider in "[[You Can't Go Home Again]]" was brain-dead from a lucky shot. The Raiders here were turned off by a virus, but it may have been too difficult to remove all of their control mechanisms. Since these are in fact organic mechanisms that could still be fighting to survive, they may have their own ability of causing additional harm if captured alive.
**Further, ''Galactica'' had not idea how long it would be until Cylon reinforcements showed up; they probably didn't want to wait for a Basestar to come. Further, the civilian fleet had jumped away from ''Galactica'' in anticipation of the attack, and ''Galactica'' probably didn't want to leave them unattended too long. There wasn't enough time and it was too dangerous.
**At this point, ''Galactica'' could have as many as two Heavy Raiders already—the one that crash-landed into the starboard pod in "[[Scattered]]" and the one Starbuck, Helo, and Sharon returned with in [[Home, Part II]]
***The Heavy Raider that crash landed in "Scattered" may have suffered irreparable damage.
***One of the Heavy Raiders' (most likely the one from "[[The Farm]]") brains was used in "[[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I]]" as a means of plotting multiple long jumps back to Caprica.
*As noted below, Helo is now a Viper pilot. This isn't unexpected, as the fleet's desperation in training new Viper pilots has led them to recruit otherwise unqualified candidates ([[Act of Contrition]]). Compared to these rapidly trained nuggets, a trained military pilot such as Helo, even if he wasn't qualified and trained as a Viper pilot, would be a great asset. It's likely that he was given some training between "[[Home, Part I]]"/"[[Home, Part II]]" and this episode.
*It was Helo that suggested the use of carbon composites for the Blackbird, and Starbuck says "Good call, Helo" after it is finished – showing that despite everything, Helo's opinions are still respected, perhaps symbolic of his redemption in the eyes of his crewmates.

===Deus Ex Machina Dilemmas in this Episode===
Some viewers may express confusion over the amount of time necessary to build the new fighter as well as the time it took to fight off the logic bomb and the Cylon attack. All in all, the whole episode may seem like a series of ''deus ex machina'' events to close up the episode.

To the episode's credit, it appears that several days' worth of time elapsed in the episode. This might stretch believability in the fighter's construction, but not in the logic bomb crisis. It must be noted that the breakdown in morale has left many of the crew with ''very'' little to do that's worthwhile in their free time. A monumental task such as building a fighter may be easy for a highly motivated, highly skilled and '''highly bored''' group of people. (Note the near-cheerful disposition of the workers when Lee Adama and Tigh visit the fighter.)

Further, the fighter was aided by specialists of particular fields in its construction--something that the Chief hasn't the luxury of having while in combat situations. As such, he had more willing and able resources at his command to create the ship than during any Viper repair. The crew also was not under pressure to build the system rapidly; there were many contributors, and work such of this led to a fast build time. It may also be presumed that the Viper design, of which the Blackbird is derived, may have a simple construction of [[avionics]], crew pressure module, engines, and superstructure. These ships are designed for rapid repair and redeploy, so, aside from the Blackbird's initial framework, much of the ship would likely be similar to a Viper. Also, the Blackbird is likely built with more modern technology than that found in the older and harder-to-service Viper Mk. II fighters--the Blackbird is likely descended more from the advanced Mk. VII Viper, of which Tyrol's crew was trained to understand and maintain, not the ancient Viper Mk. II museum pieces.

It was also established in the episode that there were spare spacecraft parts available to Tyrol—at the beginning of an episode he marks a severely damaged Viper for scrap, and Col. Tigh walks in on his still and informs him of some extra engines and other parts that another ship in the fleet is trying to dispose of. Given the ability to cannibalize already-built parts, the assembly of the Blackbird is not as great a task as building a Viper from scratch might be.

Given that the Blackbird wasn't employed in the main plot to, say, take on the hundreds of Cylon fighters in a desperate attack using last-minute technology, the ship was an interesting development. Some viewers may wonder why the Colonials have never built (or why viewers have never seen) a stealth craft to date, or why the Cylons haven't used them in their attacks. Generally speaking, technology usually appears when there is a need for it, and not merely a desire for it. Since both sides are very dependent on DRADIS for coordination and tactical advantage in a fight, the idea of commanding a squadron of ships you cannot see on your own tactical plot can be a bit challenging. Further, while the Colonials still had a standing force in case the Cylons returned, such sneaky technology may seem out of mind to defense strategists when there's no enemy about to test it--especially an enigmatic one such as the Cylons. The Colonials were more intent (at least, up until Baltar's time) to defend itself by using less sophisticated technology and basic war principles such as armor and superiority of numbers, not in making high-tech, fly-by-wire ships with complex evasive ability. As Starbuck seemed to prove in the Blackbird's maiden flight, no amount of technology will compensate for the power of a good pilot and her [[Mark One Eyeball]].

In his podcast for this episode, [[Ronald D. Moore|Ron D. Moore]] acknowledges the build-time dilemma for the Blackbird, and notes that the vagueness of time elapsed to build the machine was intentional so as to allow it to be built and done with in one episode, instead of drawing out the building into two or three episodes.

* [[Laura Roslin]]'s scouting team makes its way through rain and cold towards the [[Gates of Hera]] and the [[Tomb of Athena]]. With the death of [[Elosha]], Roslin now has to interpret what information they have of the [[Sacred Scrolls]] by herself or using the help of the second copy of [[Sharon Valerii (Caprica copy)|Sharon Valerii]].
* Meanwhile, on ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]'', Commander [[William Adama|Adama]] and others on the command staff pore over their topography data of [[Kobol]] to determine Roslin's whereabouts. Adama plans a [[Raptor]] expedition to Kobol, travelling himself to "reach out" to Roslin there and work to mend fences.

* The mood of the reunion sours when Commander Adama sees the second Valerii. Upset, he attacks her and throws her to the ground, but stops his assault when the pressures of his recovery form anxiety that causes him chest pain. Valerii says, "And you ask 'why?'" (mysteriously answering Adama's question, "Why?" said over her ''Galactica'' counterpart's dead body).
* Roslin and Commander Adama bury the hatchet in their first heart-to-heart conversation about themselves and the Fleet. When Roslin brings up the Caprican resistance and whether abandoning the Colonies was the best idea, Commander Adama cuts her off, stating that Roslin saved his life, and that of his son. If he did not take her advice, they would all be dead.
* With Commander Adama in the group, Tom Zarek tells Meier to abandon their plans on Lee Adama, but Meier secretly continues the plan, giving Sharon Valerii one of his [[Stallion|civilian sidearms]] to shoot Lee Adama while he and another Zarek team member work to shoot Commander Adama.
* Valerii relates her feelings to Helo on how the Fleet sees her and other Cylon agents: as machines, not people, with no rights. Realizing what Meier is trying to do (but not relaying the story to Helo), she tells Helo to trust her in what must be done next.
* The team finds the Tomb of Athena. Immediately, Valerii raises her gun towards Commander Adama as Meier raises his gun to Lee Adama's head. But Valerii is feinting: She shoots Meier instead while Lee Adama kills another Meier conspirator that raised his gun at him. Valerii states to Commander Adama that, unlike "Boomer", she is aware of who and what she is, and that she makes own decisions on her destiny. She surrenders her gun to Commander Adama as her first of [[Flight of the Phoenix|many]] overtures of good faith.
* The [[Arrow of Apollo]] is not a key to the door of the Tomb; the expedition pushes the door open. Commander Adama leaves Zarek, Valerii, and Helo guarded by Tyrol outside while Roslin, the Adamas, Keikeya and Thrace enter the Tomb. Inside, they find [[Wikipedia:Sarchophagus|sarcophagi]], each bearing statues that represent the tribal symbols. One status, Sagittaron, is missing his arrow.
* When the Arrow is placed on the Sagittaron statue, a hologram of sorts activates around the team, placing them on a grassy field surrounded by stone pillars with glowing representations of the ancient tribal symbols that would later form the symbols of the Colonies. They soon deduce that they are standing on a representation of [[Earth]] in a planetarium of sorts that shows the Zodiac: the constellations form a representation what the Thirteenth Tribe would see from the vantage of Earth's sky.
* Lee Adama finds what they came for in the virtual sky above: The [[Wikipedia:Lagoon_Nebula|Lagoon Nebula]], a celestial point known to the Colonials as well, which now provides the Fleet both a destination and a direction to Earth, although Commmander Adama warns that the Nebula is very far away.
* Back on ''Galactica'', Adama completes his reunification of the Fleet and fence-mending by leading a rousing ovation for the reinstated President Roslin at an assembly in the port [[Hangar Deck|hangar deck]], complete with cheers from the crowd.
* Sharon Valerii is placed in the special brig designed for her counterpart. Helo visits her while Gaius Baltar watches with his virtual Number Six, who now returns in her usual form. She claims now that she is an "angel of [[God]]" with a mission to guide and protect Baltar "until the end of the human race."

== Questions ==
* How did Adama and the others return from the map of Earth?
**What exactly was the map of Earth? Were they in the same room in the Tomb of Athena, and a 3D hologram was projected around them? Could it have been "all in their heads?" If so, would it even be perceived by the Cylons if they tried to view it?
***In Ron D. Moore's blog on the official Scifi.com site, October 14, 2005 entry, Moore says that the map was "probably a holographic projection of some sort". As for what was preventing the Cylons finding the map now that the Tomb was open, Moore said that they planned to have Cylon Centurions attack again at the Tomb, destroying the hologram projector, however it was decided not to do this because it didn't flow well dramatically.
****Presumably, the Colonials took the Arrow with them, and without it, the map won't turn on.
**Did they retrieve the Arrow of Apollo? Is the map still active? If the Cylons find the map in working order and can use it, could they use the strength of their information networks to find Earth before the colonials do?
*Just who or what is the copy of Number Six that Dr. Baltar sees all the time? It is firmly established that she is not some sort of computer chip in his head, but at the same time it is established that she can't possibly be just a hallucination by Baltar's guilt-ridden subconscious mind. Baltar himself has come to the realization that she is aware of actual facts (like that a Cylon copy pregnant with a hybrid child would be brought into the new brig) that his own subconscious couldn't possibly have known of. Six herself simply said that she's "an angel of God sent here to protect you [Gaius]". Is she truly some form of supernatural force (like Count [[Iblis]] in the Original Series)? Repeated medical scans showed no foreign objects in Baltar's mind.
**Could [[Gaius Baltar]] himself be a Cylon?
**Could the Cylons simply have developed an "organic chip" that would be indestinguishable from Baltar's normal brain tissue when scanned? (Cylons do seem to have mastered much of bio-mechanical engineering.) If so, does Six exist more like a transponder from a nearby Cylon source, where his body and mind can be monitored by what he sees and does, and responses and an image of Six sent to him. Obviously, from his virtual sex with Six, the connection also can control his senses and manupulate him like a marionette: Six's image could even assault Baltar ([[Six Degrees of Separation]]).
**While the Cylons have made notable advancements in macro-bioenginering, they may still lack the required expertise in micro-bioengineering as it relates to cells, most notably demonstrated by their inability to create human/Cylon embryos at will ([[The Farm]]). If there is not a chip in Baltar's head, and he is not hallucinating, could this add more to the speculation that Baltar himself is a [[Cylon agent]]? (See [[Gaius Baltar]]'s page for arguments for and against this theory in the Speculation section.)
**How was Six capable of moving the chair in the Cylon holding cell? The chair was seen in both positions in "objective" shots (i.e. shots not from Baltar's POV that didn't include Six.)
***This may be a simple continuity error or it might suggest that Six can selectively appear as a physical manifestation, as hinted at by the appearance of [[Shelly Godfrey]].
***Baltar could have simply hallucinated that she moved it.
*Caprica-Boomer reminded Adama that he asked her Galactica counterpart's corpse "why" in [[Resistance]]. How did she know, without also knowing that Galactica Boomer had been killed? Or, was Boomer answering Adama's question of "why" from his attack: that humans have always abused Cylons as he had just done?
**Along that line, in the previous scene with [[Karl Agathon|Helo]], Caprica-Boomer mentions how she was able to remember portions of her life (such as getting her wings), and not others (such as the assassination of [[William Adama]]). Is the communication between copies delayed or possibly selective, even in death?
***Caprica-Sharon elaborated on this more in "[[Resurrection Ship, Part II]]", in which she is actually referring to Adama's question of "Why are we as a species worthy of survival?" asked in the [[Miniseries]]. The connation that she is referring to Adama's emotional question of "Why?" to Galactica-Sharon's corpse in this same episode could just be the result of messy editing.
*How can Adama use the Messier number M8 to refer to the Lagoon Nebula? The Messier catalog was created in 1774, on Earth. Possible answers:
**Language and nomenclature in the show is allegorical. Same reason the Colonials speak English, same reason Adama references the game of craps ("gotta roll a hard six"), same reason all the characters have Western names.
**Parallel development between Earth and the Twelve Colonies extends past attire, vehicles, medicine and government documents to include highly specific astronomical nomenclature.
**The show is set in the past, and Galactica arrives at Earth in time to influence 18th century astronomy.
**The show is set in the distant future, and the inhabitants of Kobol are actually descendents of an Earth-based population, some of whom returned after a vaguely-alluded-to disaster.
***This is supported by otherwise difficult to explain terms such as the Battlestar [[Columbia]], which appears to be named for the 15th century Earth explorer [[Wikipedia:Christopher Columbus|Christopher Columbus]].
***It is also supported by the setup of the map itself. Only someone who could have been on Earth originally could have properly plotted out the Zodiac constellations as seen from Earth. Unless of course the map was created by the Lords of Kobol, whoever or whatever they were.
*What are Tom Zarek's true motivations? We see in [[Home, Part I]] that he had a desire to become the next "Fleet Commander", like [[William Adama]], and willing to go along and eliminate anyone in his way, such as [[Lee Adama]]. Yet during the foray on Kobol, he reverses his position and applauds [[Laura Roslin]] when she re-assumes the presidency.
*Caprica-Sharon's claim that the Cylons know more about Colonial religion than the Colonials raises interesting questions. The Cylons had direct access to the Arrow of Apollo and had at least a token presence on Kobol. If all of them knew where the Tomb of Athena was as Valerii claims, why didn't they use this knowledge to locate Earth themselves?

== Analysis ==
*The map to Earth is believable and satisfying: no goofy special effects or flaming letters spelling out "Go This Way," just basic astronomy. It gives the Colonials both a "compass" and "landmarks" to follow.

*The compass is the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lagoon_Nebula Lagoon Nebula], an actual nebula visible from both Earth and the Colonies. Assuming the Colonials' astronomical instruments are advanced enough to permit them to see the nebula from a greater distance than we can, the Lagoon Nebula gives them a general direction to head toward. They also know that Earth is within realistic traveling distance, and they know that Earth will be in a sphere centered on the Lagoon Nebula. The twelve star groupings that appeared on the Colonies' original flags are actual constellations, the twelve signs of the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zodiac Zodiac] (Aquarius, Aries, Cancer, Capricorn, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Pisces, Sagittarius, Scorpio, Taurus and Virgo). These constellations will serve as landmarks: at the right planet, or within perhaps a few light-years of the nebula, these constellations will begin appear as they do on the Colonials' flags, assuming that they compensate for the natural drift of stars relative to Earth over time, as constellations are not static.

*If each of the Twelve Tribes had an associated symbol that the Thirteenth Tribe identified in their constellations, did the Thirteenth Tribe have one of their own? There is a thirteenth constellation in the Zodiac, [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ophiuchus Ophiuchus] the snake-bearer, which is not included in astrology.

:Ophiuchus may, however, be included in Greek mythology, as it is speculated that the snake-bearer represents Asclepius, the healer. The story of Asclepius is that he learned the secrets of life and death while watching one snake cure another snake he had wounded. Zeus struck Asclepius down out of fear that, under his care, the human race could become immortal.

*As the nebula and constellations in the map to Earth are recognizably ours, this would appear to indicate that the Tomb of Athena isn't a Cylon construct intended to lead the Colonials astray.

*Even so, it could take the Colonials years of searching within the vicinity of the Lagoon Nebula to find Earth.

* This may be the first episode where Adama and the President call each other by their first names, and not formally: "Bill" and "Laura." By the end of this episode, it appears that Adama realizes that, while Roslin did step over the line with her redirection of Starbuck, that there was a logical need to get information on Earth in any way possible. After his near-death experience, Adama seemed more resigned that they should all meet their doom or glory together rather than separate. Roslin reinforced the fleet's hope and gave it direction and purpose. Adama's rousing formal applause generation for Roslin at the end of the episode shows that Adama has firmly buried the hatchet between himself and the President.

* Commander Adama's sense of humor is returning: first in his talk with Billy about Roslin's comments on his future of being president someday ("Don't let it go to your head: [[Richard Adar|Adar]] was a moron.") and in his glib comment on how well their luck was going so far, as their Raptor's descent subjected them to several G-forces and pressed both of them firmly, visibly and uncomfortably against the bulkheads.

* Helo is already experiencing repercussions regarding his relationship with Caprica-Boomer. First by Apollo, who voices his uneasiness about the pair to Starbuck and then later, indirectly, by Commander Adama himself who makes a point of leaving Helo outside the Tomb of Athena with Zarek, Boomer and Tyrol. Tyrol was given the order to guard them which indicates that the chief is the only one of the four left outside that Adama trusts.

== Notes ==
*Population is 47,855, a loss of three since Part I. Two of these were seen on-screen in the last episode (Elosha and a [[Laura Roslin faction]] [[Wikipedia: Redshirt (character)|Redshirt]]). The other may have happened offscreen in the same ambush.

Caprica-Sharon herself acknowledges that it's weird that she has deep-seated memories of things she fully knows she's never actually done.
*Caprica-Sharon apparently still believes that there is only "one true God" and that the Colonials "worship false idols".
*Caprica-Sharon flat out says that the Cylons know more about the Colonial religion than the Colonials themselves.
*According to Starbuck's observations, the Cylons have a plan for Caprica; "they're cleaning up the bodies, moving in the heavy machinery to repair the infrastructure..."

*Dr. Baltar has had a medical scan performed on his head, and it appears that there are no "foreign objects", like a metallic computer chip containing a copy of Number Six's mind, within it.
*Baltar has come to the realization that the copy of [[Number Six]] he sees cannot be just a hallucination, because she knows things his subconscious mind couldn't possibly know.
*This episode probably begins a few hours after [[Home, Part I]], although it could conceivably begin immediately after it.

Both lines were changed at the behest of the studio's standards and practices unit.

* The events of this episode appear to begin immediately after [[The Farm]]. Adama appoints Birch as CAG at the end of that day or the morning of the next, and his foibles appear to consume at least a day, possibly two.
* With [[Lee Adama]] [[Wikipedia:AWOL|AWOL]], [[William Adama|Adama]] and [[Saul Tigh|Colonel Tigh]] are going over possible new [[CAG]]s. As Tigh reluctantly points out, none of them are Apollo.
* Unbeknownst to Tigh, Adama has already made his choice: Lieutenant [[George Birch]], now promoted to Captain. Adama had only called in Tigh, hoping that he and his XO were "on the same page". During the whole discussion, he is crushing walnuts in his hands. During his speech to Birch, he states that everyone on the Galactica is family, including his sons.
* Meanwhile, Adama has another problem; the Press. He attempts to communicate to them about the segmentation in the Fleet. The attempt backfires, with questions from the press remaining unanswered.
* In the compartment over, [[Gaius Baltar]] is looking into the corridor from the hatch's threshold. Now having the knowledge that there are eight [[Cylon agent]]s onboard, he is becoming increasing paranoid. Six attempts to soothe him, claiming that he does not share the other human's fate. She also goes on to say that humans are masters of self-destruction.
* As the new CAG, Birch is enthusiastic and attempts to grow into his new role. One of his new duties is to lead combat exercises. In an asteroid field, [[Brendan Constanza|Hot Dog]] and [[Louanne Katraine|Kat]] are to practice attack runs on an asteroid.
** Hot Dog fires a missile at the primary target, only to wing it (and earn a scolding from Birch, who states that he knows Hot Dog can do better).
** A communications glitch during the target exercise causes both Hot Dog and Kat to think they are each cleared for their attack runs. Birch fails to resolve the confusion, and a tragedy almost occurs: Hot Dog releases another missile while Kat begins strafing the primary asteroid target. The missile causes the asteroid to splinter, the debris from it almost killing Kat. While her Viper is winged, Kat manages to make it out alive.
* Another incident occurs, when two vessels (a fuel tanker and a civilian ship) are attempting a straight-forward refuel op. Birch has been supervising the op, which has been running for four hours. Tigh firmly notes that while Birch is Adama's man, he is green and inexperienced.
** Adama orders the op be aborted, but not in time to prevent the ships from colliding. Fortunately, the resultant damage is non-critical.
* Adama talks to Dee in his cabin. Dee speaks her mind, saying that everyone is separated; parents and children, friends. After the emotional discussion, Adama attempts to dismiss her. She refuses, saying that it is time to heal the wounds.
* As Adama is walking through Galactica's empty corridors, he reflects. After his reflection, he returns to [[CIC]], where he orders that the intel on [[Kobol]] be brought to his office. "It's time to put the Fleet back together," he states, matter-of-factly.

=== On [[Astral Queen]] ===

* Members of the [[Quorum of Twelve]], Roslin, and [[Lee Adama]] are arguing over what their next move should be. Roslin attempts to persuade everyone to await [[Kara Thrace]]'s (Starbuck's) return with the [[Arrow of Apollo]]; she is steadfast in her belief that the Arrow will open the [[Tomb of Athena]], which holds the way to [[Earth]].
* An unidentified ship is approaching Roslin's fleet. Zarek and Meier are preparing to have a nearby ship with missile batteries, the ''[[Adriatic]]'', attack the unidentified ship. President Roslin joins the discussion and argues that they should wait; Meier argues that the unidentified vessel should be destroyed before leaving the weapons range of the nearby ship.
* Just in time, Starbuck's voice is heard over the wireless hailing them from the unidentified ship. Starbuck's appropriated troop carrier is permitted to dock.
* Apollo reunites with Starbuck, impulsively kissing her, to her surprise. Apollo is shocked to discover that Starbuck and Helo have brought [[Sharon Valerii (Caprica copy)|Caprica-Valerii]] back with them. He goes berserk, grabbing Valerii and shoving his pistol in her face. [[Karl Agathon|Helo]] approaches from behind, placing a gun against Apollo's head.
* Roslin defuses the situation, with both men putting down their arms. She then turns about and orders "put that thing [Valerii] out the airlock!" to be executed. Valerii is dragged off, but claims to know how to find the Tomb of Athena. Roslin then spares the "young woman"'s life, if only temporarily.
* Apollo spends some time talking to Starbuck, trying to convince her to open up to him and assuring her he will be there for her. During this discussion he lets it slip that he loves her. Although he later insists he didn't say it, Starbuck doesn't let him get away with taking it back.
* Zarek and Meier have a private discussion: Zarek is looking to command the new fleet to freedom that he has "promised". Meier discusses the fact that they need Roslin, but find that Adama may be a problem. During this conversation, Meier brings up the point that Elosa made: according to the scriptures, there is a price for landing on Kobol, and it is paid in blood. It is insinuated that Lee Adama should be the one to pay the so-called price.

* A contingent, including Meier, Zarek, Valerii, Agathon, Thrace, [[Elosha]], Roslin and Apollo, land on Kobol. Elosha (reading from the scriptures) and Valerii (reciting scripture from memory) state that the path to Athena's Tomb is along a stone ridge.

Entrenched in a high position, the trio of Centurions attempts to wipe out the party -- Helo takes out one, Thrace and Lee Adama take out another, and Valerii runs off, only to use a grenade launcher to take out the remaining Centurion.
* Elosha is found dead and Roslin tearfully retrieves the blood-covered book of scriptures from her.

* As Lieutenant Valerii demonstrates, the Cylons have excellent knowledge of the Colonials' scriptures, sufficient to anticipate mining the path alongside the gravestones, for example. What other nasty surprises are in store for the party on Kobol? Will the Tomb of Athena which they expect to find even be the "real" tomb?
* Agathon is seemingly aghast at the treatment of Sharon upon boarding the ''Astral Queen''. What did [[Karl Agathon]] expect when a glorified poster child for humanity's genocidists falls into the hands of the survivors? Did he hope to hide that she was a Cylon -- or hope that they would be merciful?
* Will Agathon be put up for charges for his attempted assault of Lee Adama? ([[Pegasus (episode)|Answer]])
* What "fate" is Baltar's internal Six referring to? How will Baltar be "spared"?
* Given the press' reactionary ferocity regarding the martial law edict, has the press hounded Baltar regarding martial law and his now-powerless position as Vice President of the Colonies? If not, why?
* Will Thrace eventually heal from her emotional trauma experienced in the Cylon breeding farm? How will she deal with it, particularly as a previous victim of child abuse?
* How will Thrace and Lee Adama pursue their relationship, now that Adama has admitted his feelings for her?
* What is the exact nature of Dee and William Adama's relationship? It seems more personal on an emotional level for both of them; leaving this question to be asked: What has Dee done to deserve this level of Adama's trust?
* When will a rescue mission be mounted for the Caprican survivors?
* How will Zarek and Meier deal with dispatching Lee Adama?
* With Elosha dead, will there be another spiritual advisor filling that vacuum?
** Since she died on Kobol, is it true that her soul is also gone? (Providing that the "soul" exists in the Battlestar universe, of course.)
*Why does Tigh suggest [[Perry]] as a choice for new CAG? He was killed in the Battle for the Tylium Asteroid in "[[The Hand of God]]", and was a nugget besides. Is there another pilot of the same name?

== Analysis ==
*The [[Arrow of Apollo]] looks rather ornate for a functional arrow. It may instead have once served as a symbol of religious or temporal authority, not unlike the [[Wikipedia:Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom|Britsh Crown Jewels]].
*The 9,500 Gemenons in the Roslin faction alone represent 20% of the fleet population. If the populations of the 12 colonies were represented equally throughout the fleet, they should each represent approximately 8.3% of the total population. As a result of this figure, we must make two assumptions:
**Through accident or design, the Gemenon population of the fleet is substantially larger than the other colonies.
**All, or nearly all of the Gemenon population has allied with the Roslin faction. This makes sense, given what Cpl. [[Venner]] has said about Gemenon fundamentalism, and Roslin's use of the "religion card".
*Of the remaining 8,500 souls belonging to the Roslin faction, 6,250 are from Caprica. If we assume that the non-Gemenon population of the Roslin faction represents an even cross-section of the fleet's population, Caprica represents 74% of the remaining 11 colonies.
**Assuming all the Gemenon population left with the Roslin faction, and the Caprican portion of the Roslin faction is a representative sample, the fleet's demographics break down as follows:
***60% from Caprica
***19.9% from Gemenon
***20.1% from elsewhere
***This is not completely implausible, since both ''[[Galactica]]'' and ''[[Colonial One]]'' were likely serving the needs of the closest colony, Caprica, when the [[Cylon Attack]] occurred. On the other hand, it would make the [[Quorum of Twelve]] a rather poor representational system.
***Alternatively, there may be some factor which earned the allegiance of the a greater-than-average portion of the Caprica population. Roslin is presumably a native of Caprica herself.
*A frequent question about "[[Resistance]]" was why didn't Baltar ask Galactica-Boomer the names of the 8 Cylons left in the fleet, and it was suspected of being a plot hole. Now here, Baltar himself is shown regretting not asking her the identiy of the other 8 Cylons. Perhaps he only had enough time to ask her one question and still save Chief Tyrol's life, and he was planning on asking her more if "that idiot hadn't killed her".
*Birch is flying a Viper Mark VII in this episode, which was Apollo's preference prior to the damage he sustained during an atmospheric [[SAR]] in "[[You Can't Go Home Again]]". He, and his entire squadron, used Mark II Vipers in the [[Battle for the Tylium Asteroid]] (21 days later), although at least six Mark VIIs were deployed in "[[Scattered]]" (36 days later). Perhaps it just took the better part of three weeks to rehabilitate the Mark VIIs.
*Another hard to explain name appears in this episode. The name of the ship ''[[Adriatic]]'', obviously derived from the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adriatic_Sea Adriatic Sea], is an arm of the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mediterranean_Sea Mediterranean Sea] that separates Italy from the Balkan peninsula on [[Earth]].

*This episode apparently begins immediately after the events of [[The Farm]].
*Population count is 47,858, a gain of one since [[The Farm]], probably to account for the return of Helo. This means that Starbuck was never written off as "presumed dead", and if Sharon was ever included in the count before her outing as a Cylon, her copy isn't being added back after her defection.

* The events of this episode appear to begin immediately after [[The Farm]]. Adama appoints Birch as CAG at the end of that day or the morning of the next, and his foibles appear to consume at least a day, possibly two.
* With [[Lee Adama]] [[Wikipedia:AWOL|AWOL]], [[William Adama|Adama]] and [[Saul Tigh|Colonel Tigh]] are going over possible new [[CAG]]s. As Tigh reluctantly points out, none of them are Apollo.
* Unbeknownst to Tigh, Adama has already made his choice: Lieutenant [[George Birch]], now promoted to Captain. Adama had only called in Tigh, hoping that he and his XO were "on the same page". During the whole discussion, he is crushing walnuts in his hands. During his speech to Birch, he states that everyone on the Galactica is family, including his sons.
* Meanwhile, Adama has another problem; the Press. He attempts to communicate to them about the segmentation in the Fleet. The attempt backfires, with questions from the press remaining unanswered.
* In the compartment over, [[Gaius Baltar]] is looking into the corridor from the hatch's threshold. Now having the knowledge that there are eight [[Cylon agent]]s onboard, he is becoming increasing paranoid. Six attempts to soothe him, claiming that he does not share the other human's fate. She also goes on to say that humans are masters of self-destruction.
* As the new CAG, Birch is enthusiastic and attempts to grow into his new role. One of his new duties is to lead combat exercises. In an asteroid field, [[Brendan Constanza|Hot Dog]] and [[Louanne Katraine|Kat]] are to practice attack runs on an asteroid.
** Hot Dog fires a missile at the primary target, only to wing it (and earn a scolding from Birch, who states that he knows Hot Dog can do better).
** A communications glitch during the target exercise causes both Hot Dog and Kat to think they are each cleared for their attack runs. Birch fails to resolve the confusion, and a tragedy almost occurs: Hot Dog releases another missile while Kat begins strafing the primary asteroid target. The missile causes the asteroid to splinter, the debris from it almost killing Kat. While her Viper is winged, Kat manages to make it out alive.
* Another incident occurs, when two vessels (a fuel tanker and a civilian ship) are attempting a straight-forward refuel op. Birch has been supervising the op, which has been running for four hours. Tigh firmly notes that while Birch is Adama's man, he is green and inexperienced.
** Adama orders the op be aborted, but not in time to prevent the ships from colliding. Fortunately, the resultant damage is non-critical.
* Adama talks to Dee in his cabin. Dee speaks her mind, saying that everyone is separated; parents and children, friends. After the emotional discussion, Adama attempts to dismiss her. She refuses, saying that it is time to heal the wounds.
* As Adama is walking through Galactica's empty corridors, he reflects. After his reflection, he returns to [[CIC]], where he orders that the intel on [[Kobol]] be brought to his office. "It's time to put the Fleet back together," he states, matter-of-factly.

=== On [[Astral Queen]] ===

* Members of the [[Quorum of Twelve]], Roslin, and [[Lee Adama]] are arguing over what their next move should be. Roslin attempts to persuade everyone to await [[Kara Thrace]]'s (Starbuck's) return with the [[Arrow of Apollo]]; she is steadfast in her belief that the Arrow will open the [[Tomb of Athena]], which holds the way to [[Earth]].
* An unidentified ship is approaching Roslin's fleet. Zarek and Meier are preparing to have a nearby ship with missile batteries, the ''[[Adriatic]]'', attack the unidentified ship. President Roslin joins the discussion and argues that they should wait; Meier argues that the unidentified vessel should be destroyed before leaving the weapons range of the nearby ship.
* Just in time, Starbuck's voice is heard over the wireless hailing them from the unidentified ship. Starbuck's appropriated troop carrier is permitted to dock.
* Apollo reunites with Starbuck, impulsively kissing her, to her surprise. Apollo is shocked to discover that Starbuck and Helo have brought [[Sharon Valerii (Caprica copy)|Caprica-Valerii]] back with them. He goes berserk, grabbing Valerii and shoving his pistol in her face. [[Karl Agathon|Helo]] approaches from behind, placing a gun against Apollo's head.
* Roslin defuses the situation, with both men putting down their arms. She then turns about and orders "put that thing [Valerii] out the airlock!" to be executed. Valerii is dragged off, but claims to know how to find the Tomb of Athena. Roslin then spares the "young woman"'s life, if only temporarily.
* Apollo spends some time talking to Starbuck, trying to convince her to open up to him and assuring her he will be there for her. During this discussion he lets it slip that he loves her. Although he later insists he didn't say it, Starbuck doesn't let him get away with taking it back.
* Zarek and Meier have a private discussion: Zarek is looking to command the new fleet to freedom that he has "promised". Meier discusses the fact that they need Roslin, but find that Adama may be a problem. During this conversation, Meier brings up the point that Elosa made: according to the scriptures, there is a price for landing on Kobol, and it is paid in blood. It is insinuated that Lee Adama should be the one to pay the so-called price.

* A contingent, including Meier, Zarek, Valerii, Agathon, Thrace, [[Elosha]], Roslin and Apollo, land on Kobol. Elosha (reading from the scriptures) and Valerii (reciting scripture from memory) state that the path to Athena's Tomb is along a stone ridge.

* Agathon is seemingly aghast at the treatment of Sharon upon boarding the ''Astral Queen''. What did [[Karl Agathon]] expect when a glorified poster child for humanity's genocidists falls into the hands of the survivors? Did he hope to hide that she was a Cylon -- or hope that they would be merciful?
* Will Agathon be put up for charges for his attempted assault of Lee Adama? ([[Pegasus (episode)|Answer]])
* What "fate" is Baltar's internal Six referring to? How will Baltar be "spared"?
* Given the press' reactionary ferocity regarding the martial law edict, has the press hounded Baltar regarding martial law and his now-powerless position as Vice President of the Colonies? If not, why?
* Will Thrace eventually heal from her emotional trauma experienced in the Cylon breeding farm? How will she deal with it, particularly as a previous victim of child abuse?
* How will Thrace and Lee Adama pursue their relationship, now that Adama has admitted his feelings for her?
* What is the exact nature of Dee and William Adama's relationship? It seems more personal on an emotional level for both of them; leaving this question to be asked: What has Dee done to deserve this level of Adama's trust?

* With Elosha dead, will there be another spiritual advisor filling that vacuum?
** Since she died on Kobol, is it true that her soul is also gone? (Providing that the "soul" exists in the Battlestar universe, of course.)
*Why does Tigh suggest [[Perry]] as a choice for new CAG? He was killed in the Battle for the Tylium Asteroid in "[[The Hand of God]]", and was a nugget besides. Is there another pilot of the same name?

== Analysis ==
*The [[Arrow of Apollo]] looks rather ornate for a functional arrow. It may instead have once served as a symbol of religious or temporal authority, not unlike the [[Wikipedia:Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom|Britsh Crown Jewels]].
*The 9,500 Gemenons in the Roslin faction alone represent 20% of the fleet population. If the populations of the 12 colonies were represented equally throughout the fleet, they should each represent approximately 8.3% of the total population. As a result of this figure, we must make two assumptions:
**Through accident or design, the Gemenon population of the fleet is substantially larger than the other colonies.
**All, or nearly all of the Gemenon population has allied with the Roslin faction. This makes sense, given what Cpl. [[Venner]] has said about Gemenon fundamentalism, and Roslin's use of the "religion card".
*Of the remaining 8,500 souls belonging to the Roslin faction, 6,250 are from Caprica. If we assume that the non-Gemenon population of the Roslin faction represents an even cross-section of the fleet's population, Caprica represents 74% of the remaining 11 colonies.
**Assuming all the Gemenon population left with the Roslin faction, and the Caprican portion of the Roslin faction is a representative sample, the fleet's demographics break down as follows:
***60% from Caprica
***19.9% from Gemenon
***20.1% from elsewhere
***This is not completely implausible, since both ''[[Galactica]]'' and ''[[Colonial One]]'' were likely serving the needs of the closest colony, Caprica, when the [[Cylon Attack]] occurred. On the other hand, it would make the [[Quorum of Twelve]] a rather poor representational system.
***Alternatively, there may be some factor which earned the allegiance of the a greater-than-average portion of the Caprica population. Roslin is presumably a native of Caprica herself.
*A frequent question about "[[Resistance]]" was why didn't Baltar ask Galactica-Boomer the names of the 8 Cylons left in the fleet, and it was suspected of being a plot hole. Now here, Baltar himself is shown regretting not asking her the identiy of the other 8 Cylons. Perhaps he only had enough time to ask her one question and still save Chief Tyrol's life, and he was planning on asking her more if "that idiot hadn't killed her".
*Birch is flying a Viper Mark VII in this episode, which was Apollo's preference prior to the damage he sustained during an atmospheric [[SAR]] in "[[You Can't Go Home Again]]". He, and his entire squadron, used Mark II Vipers in the [[Battle for the Tylium Asteroid]] (21 days later), although at least six Mark VIIs were deployed in "[[Scattered]]" (36 days later). Perhaps it just took the better part of three weeks to rehabilitate the Mark VIIs.
*Another hard to explain name appears in this episode. The name of the ship ''[[Adriatic]]'', obviously derived from the[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adriatic_Sea Adriatic Sea], is an arm of the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mediterranean_Sea Mediterranean Sea] that separates Italy from the Balkan peninsula on [[Earth]].

They will fit as many people as possible onto the craft, and will dispatch a rescue mission for the remainder upon return to ''[[Galactica]]''.
*As the team is about to assault the airstrip, they are ambushed, and Thrace is hit by a bullet that grazes off her head and gets lodged in her abdomen. She loses consciousness.
*Thrace wakes up in a hospital. She is being attended to by a doctor named [[Simon]], who tells her that she was brought into the hospital by Anders, and that Anders died from a shrapnel wound. Thrace is devastated.
*Thrace spends the next few days conversing with Simon, who muses that women capable of bearing children are a rare "commodity" now that the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylons]] have nuked the Colonies, and suggests that Thrace should consider giving birth to a child.

Among them is [[Sue-Shaun]], who begs Kara to destroy the "baby machines" and end their misery. She obliges with a prayer, a pair of medical tongs, and a primal scream.
*Thrace staggers outside, braining the Six model with a fire extinguisher in the process, only to find a new Simon standing there to greet her. Just then, [[Karl Agathon|Helo]] and the rest of the resistance emerge from the woods. They pepper Simon with bullets, but soon get bogged down in a firefight with a squad of [[Cylon Centurion|Centurions]]. Time for the second rescue in as many minutes: [[Sharon Valerii (Caprica copy)|Caprica-Valerii]] swoops down in a stolen [[Cylon Heavy Raider]] and blows the enemy away.
*Thrace relates her experiences in the hospital to the others. Valerii explains that the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylons]] have a flaw which renders them unable to reproduce biologically, and that they have been holding human women in "farms" to try to implant them with human/Cylon embryos. This effort has failed, however, leading the Cylons to believe that conception requires "love". According to this theory, Valerii was able to conceive with Helo because of their love for each other.
*Helo, Sharon, and Starbuck leave Caprica on the Heavy Raider. Starbuck has promised [[Samuel Anders|Anders]] to return someday to rescue the Resistance. In the meantime, Anders says he will try to destroy as many farms as he can.

*Commander Adama returns to duty, and is greated by applause in the [[CIC]]. He tells the crew that he loves them all.
*To try to rally support to the president, Zarek wants [[Lee Adama]] to make a recording denouncing his father. Lee stops in the middle of it and says he can't go through with that. It's left to Roslin to win over the fleet.
* Roslin plays the "religion card" to convince a third of [[The Fleet (RDM)|The Fleet]] to jump with her to Kobol despite an infuriated and staunchly secular Adama. She transfers to the ''[[Astral Queen]]'' from which she transmits a message imploring the Fleet to follow her and the path the [[Lords of Kobol]] have set out for her. Adama didn't board the ''Astral Queen'' because he thought only three or four ships would seriously listen to her religious nonsense. Instead, 24 ships ("almost a third of the Fleet") go with her.
*Cally is thrown in the brig for killing Galactica-Boomer. Chief Tyrol implores Adama to release her, because she was traumatized by events on Kobol on not in her right mind when she did it. Adama agrees to let her off easy by charging her with discharging a firearm without permission, which gives her only one month in the brig.
*Adama asks Tyrol if he could love Boomer even though she was a machine. Tyrol isn't quite sure, but it becomes apparent that Adama is asking himself the question as much as he is Tyrol; Adama loved all of his pilots like his children.
*Adama visits Galactica-Boomer's body in the morgue. He asks "Why?" then breaks down crying over her body.

== Questions ==
*Caprica-Valerii says that she knows that [[Leoben Conoy]] told Kara she was special during his interrogation aboard ''Galactica''. How could she have known this? How do the Cylon agents communicate to each other?
**Since it is confirmed that Humano-Cylon bodies do transmit their consciousness or updated information from body to body upon death, this implies that '''all''' models share memories between each other, no matter where they are. Caprica-Valerii seems to know much of ''Galactica's'' state of affairs when asked. If such communication is the case, wouldn't the relative strength of such a signal from the body be a tip-off for Colonials to locate the remaining Cylon infiltrators?
**Valerii also says that she "hasn't accessed that data" when asked how many farms there are. Does this mean that Cylons transmit information only upon death? She knew about Leoben during "[[Flesh and Bone]]" but she doesn't know the thoughts of the other Cylons on the planet who have not died. Conversely the Cylons seem unaware of her rebellious thoughts.
***Has the rebellious Sharon Valerii severed her connection with the other Cylons? After she switched sides in "[[Flesh and Bone]]", the other Cylons seem unaware of her current thoughts and actions. Perhaps she only knows of events on ''Galactica'' before this point?
**Leoben appeared to acknowledge in "[[Flesh and Bone]]" that he was too far from Cylon forces for his personality to be recovered. Was he able to covertly transmit his memories to one of the basestars encountered in [[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II]]" or "[[Scattered]]" by way of another agent?
*Will we see Simon again? ([[Downloaded|Answer]]) Is he one of the eight Cylon agents hiding in the fleet?
*How did Simon know Anders name?
**RDM's blog states that one of the member's of Anders' resistance was probably a Cylon (not necessarily any of the resistance members we saw on screen) who tipped them off to Anders, though this didn't make the final cut of the episode.
*Why does the Caprica resistance seemed more concerned about Kara's disappearance than Sue-Shaun's? Did Kara's love interest generate the greater concern?
*Could Commander Adama's evident grief upon viewing the corpse of Galactica-Boomer in the ship's morgue mean that they were personally involved at some point? Or, perhaps, did the level of humanity that this Boomer showed cause Adama to mourn her loss as he would a daughter or daughter-figure such as Kara? In any case, given her role in Adama's assassination attempt, this is strange and strong behavior.
*Would any viable embryos harvested by the Cylons be accelerated into mature adults or placed ''in vitro'' into a host? Would the host be humano-Cylon or human?
**Caprica-Valerii seemed to imply that no viable hybrid embryos had ever been produced by the Farms, at least up until this point. Then again, she said that they "weren't very successful", which is somewhat vague.

== Analysis ==
*What exactly did the Cylons do to Kara's ovaries? Simon tells Six (listen hard): "...pending lab test results on sample for ovaries, complete removal will proceed tomorrow". Starbuck escaped right after this, which means that they were ''not'' able to "completely remove" her ovaries, so at the very least Starbuck can still have children. However, female humans only have '''two''' ovaries: how can you have a "sample" one? -- Perhaps what was ''meant'' was "egg cells" or "ovum" but this didn't flow well in dialog, so the script was changed to read "ovaries" even though this was not intended. However, in either case it would seem that the Cylons at least obtained several sample egg cells from Starbuck. Will this lead to developments later on?
*In Ron D. Moore's blog entry for October 14, 2005, after finishing the last scripts for season two he jokingly says he has "the reward of time spent thinking about something besides Kara's missing ovaries ("Now, where did I leave those ovaries? They were right here a minute ago...") ". What is meant by this?

Trying to understand their failure, the Cylons developed a new theory: the element they were missing was love, and perhaps a hybrid baby conceived in love would succeed. This was the reason why [[Karl Agathon|Helo]] was set up by the Cylons into being trapped in a position where he would fall in love with [[Sharon Valerii (Caprica copy)|the copy of Sharon Valerii]] and have sex with her. ===On ''Galactica''===

*Dr. [[Cottle]] arrives on ''[[Galactica]]'' from the ''[[Rising Star (RDM)|Rising Star]]'', and informs Colonel [[Saul Tigh|Tigh]] that Commander [[William Adama]] is still bleeding internally, and that he will have to operate to stabilize his condition.
*It becomes apparent that the pressures of the day (coming up on two, without sleep) have gotten to Tigh, as he has begun drinking on duty. He becomes confused, questioning why [[Lee Adama]] is leading a crew to rescue the survivors from [[Kobol]], and causes him to act very rudely to members of the crew.
*After being informed about an arrival on the ship, Tigh goes to meet the [[Quorum of Twelve]], who demand that they be given access to the imprisoned [[Laura Roslin]]. Tigh contends that Adama removed Roslin from power, believing she was a threat to the stability of [[The Fleet (RDM)|The Fleet]], and denies accusations by the Quorum members that he will try to initiate martial law upon the Fleet.
*Meanwhile, Roslin is starting to experience delusions caused by [[Chamalla]] withdrawal while being held in ''Galactica's'' brig, which prompts [[Billy Keikeya]] to ask [[Venner|Corporal Venner]], a devout follower of the [[Pythia|Pythian]] prophecies, to obtain Chamalla extract for Roslin.
*[[Ellen Tigh]] visits Roslin in the brig, and believes Roslin is going crazy. She states that Saul should allow the Quorum members access to the imprisoned President, as it will prove that she was a threat to the stability of the government.
*The Quorum members visit, and, having taken the Chamalla and regained some lucidity, Roslin makes a statement to the members, stating that the military coup has failed, and that she is still retaining the position of President. She then goes on to tell the members that she is dying from terminal breast cancer, and the Quorum members realize that she is the dying leader who will lead the fleet to [[Earth]]. Realizing he has severely underestimated Roslin, Tigh herds the Quorum members out of the brig.
*Tigh then appears before the press, and states that because of the attempted coup against the military, he is declaring martial law over the Fleet, which throws the room into chaos.

===On Kobol===

*After holding a funeral for [[Socinus]] and [[Tarn]], the ground crew stranded on Kobol discover that the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylons]] are cannibalizing parts from their own [[Heavy Raider]] to build an anti-aircraft battery.
*[[Crashdown]] deduces that the [[Cylon Centurion]]s won't look for them, but will instead use the battery to shoot down any aircraft that come looking for the survivors.
*Even though [[Galen Tyrol|Tyrol]] and [[Gaius Baltar]] both object, Crashdown decides that they will have to take out the anti-aircraft battery if they want to get rescued, despite more than half the group lacking proficiency in the use of firearms.
*In a hallucination, [[Number Six|Six]] tells Baltar that one of the crew will turn against the others, and that it is Baltar's duty to accept his role as the father of the new race of human-Cylon hybrids.
*When the crew ready their assault on the battery, they discover that more Cylons have reinforced the security around the battery, which leads Tyrol to believe the makeshift [[DRADIS]] dish that the Cylons are using to guide the missiles will be left unprotected. In spite of this, Crashdown tells them he is in charge and that they will proceed with the plan.
*During this time, Lee Adama and a compliment of medical personnel and [[Marines]] have piloted 2 Raptors to the planet's surface.
*When [[Cally]] objects to being a diversion for the attack, Crashdown pulls a gun on her and threatens to shoot her unless she follows her orders. Tyrol pulls his gun on Crashdown, but when it looks like Crashdown will fire, he is shot in the back and instantly killed by Baltar.
*This action reveals their position to the Cylons, who start chasing after them through the forest. The team makes their way to the DRADIS dish, during which time [[Seelix]] is shot in the leg, and Tyrol is shot in the arm, but he manages to use a grenade launcher to take out the dish. Although they are outmanned, Tyrol stands up and bravely opens fire on the advancing Cylons, but the Raptors in the air use their missiles to destroy the Cylons.
*As the rescued crew leaves Kobol, Six tells Baltar that he is fulfilling his role in the prophecy, and that she will act as his conscience.
*Tyrol and Baltar cover for Crashdown's demise, indicating to [[Lee Adama]] that he died while fighting the Cylons.

If they had wished to intercept the [[SAR]] party or rescue their forces stranded on the planet, they could have done so easily. == Analysis ==

*Baltar appears in his virtual home with Six, but dressed in his fatigues and not at all spiffy as in past visions. Is this an indication that Baltar's mind is becoming more tortured, or is more or less brainwashed by Six than before?
*The somewhat delusional Roslin complains of a ringing sensation when Ellen Tigh appears. Immediately after she leaves and the hatch closes behind her, Roslin no longer hears the ringing and appears visibly relieved. She exclaims, "Oh my gods...Ellen Tigh." Could the Chamalla extract and their visions she sees be giving Roslin herself a way of detecting Cylons with her own senses, or do Ellen's grating personality traits extend into the subsonic range? Given that Roslin has had past visions that have later been logically and correctly identified as factual (to scripture or to current events), this may not be a stretch.
*Another interpretation to Roslin's complaint of ringing may be that Roslin may have barely realized that Ellen was in her presence and, in her delusion, thought she was talking to someone else. In this case, Roslin would have good reason to want to speak with the wife of the acting commanding officer that could set her free.

This seems barely sufficient to include the bodies seen on screen, let alone the number of casualties implied in [[Valley of Darkness]], but perhaps a number of the casualties haven't had time to expire yet. At the end of the episode, factoring in Crashdown's death, the total stands at 47,861.

: I really like watching the stuff that we did on Kobol when we were running through the forest and shooting guns. I am really excited about those episodes for Cally and when she almost got shot by [[Crashdown]] ([[Samuel Witwer]]), I thought that was really cool. It was difficult to film at the time, because it was freezing cold and we were running through the forest, but I think that the end results were great. I think it was really fun.
