== Overview ==
:''Battlestar ''Galactica'' discovers Kobol, and a chain of events are set in motion that threatens to change everything.''

== Summary ==
* Following the [[Colonial Day]] celebrations, [[Gaius Baltar]] finally beds [[Kara Thrace|Kara "Starbuck" Thrace]], but as they make love, she cries out for [[Lee Adama]], shattering Baltar's mood.
* Stricken by her apparent rejection of him in their coupling, Baltar in turn comes close to rejecting [[Number Six|Six]] and find it impossible to concentrate on anything – including his duties as Vice President.
* Elsewhere on ship, [[Sharon Valerii (Galactica copy)|Boomer]] attempts to take her own life, but breaks down in tears before she can shoot herself. She is called to the Ready Room for a pre-flight briefing.
* [[Laura Roslin|Roslin]] discovers that her cancer treatment is not going well. Her cancer has spread to her lymphatic system, giving her perhaps 6 months to live
* Baltar verbally fences with Lee Adama and is somewhat insulting to Thrace, tipping Lee off that the doctor has slept with Thrace. Later, still thinking about Thrace, Baltar cracks in front of Roslin.
* Following a recon mission, Boomer and [[Crashdown]] return to ''[[Galactica]]'' with evidence they have stumbled upon [[Kobol]].
* Determined to have things out with Thrace, Lee confronts her in the [[Hangar Deck]], and the two come to blows. Thrace realizes that her actions with Baltar have hurt Lee Adama.
* Reviewing the evidence returned by Boomer and Crashdown, Roslin has a vision which [[Elosha]] confirms to be the [[City of the Gods]] on Kobol.
* Roslin has two further visions – the [[Arrow of Apollo]] and the [[Tomb of Athena]], and accepts the scriptures as fact.
* Boomer, still confused, attempts to take her own life – “encouraged” by Baltar in defiance of Six.
* When [[William Adama|Adama]] reviews the evidence, he orders an extensive surface survey of the planet, seeing it as an opportunity for them to settle. Warned he should get off ''Galactica'' by Six, Baltar assigns himself to the survey.
* Roslin tries to convince Adama that Kobol will point the way to [[Earth]], but they must use the captured [[Cylon Raider]] to return to [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Caprica|Caprica]] and retrieve the Arrow of Apollo.
* Three Raptors depart ''Galactica'' for Kobol, but on arrival they find themselves in the midst of a Cylon force of Raiders – and a [[Basestar (RDM)|basestar]].
* One Raptor is destroyed, and one - carrying Baltar – crash-lands on Kobol.
* Before a rescue mission can be launched, the basestar must be taken out – and Starbuck hatches a plan to do just this using the captured Raider.
* Hearing this, Roslin meets with Starbuck and convinces her into going to Caprica instead to retrieve the Arrow, by telling her that Adama does not actually know where Earth is.
[[Image:bsg-klg1-1.jpg|thumb|right|Adama studies ancient documents on Kobol.
(c) Universal]]
===On Caprica===
* [[Karl Agathon|Helo]], alone and on the run, encounters “his” [[Sharon Valerii (Caprica copy)|Valerii]]. He shoots and wounds her. Unable to kill her outright, he takes her with him.
* When Valerii tries to talk to him, Helo cuts her off and inists that to him she is only a way off the planet.

== Questions ==
* Why did the Thirteen Tribes leave [[Kobol]]?
**In a deleted scene, Col. Tigh asks [[Elosha]] this same question, and she says that one God decided that he should be raised up above all others, and rebelled, and this triggered the cataclysm that drove humans off of Kobol.
***Could this be a reference to the beginning of the Cylon's religion and their "one true God"?
**In another deleted scene from season 2's "[[Fragged]]", Roslin says that the Sacred Scrolls don't say that humanity was exiled from Kobol, but rather "there was some sort of battle amongst the Gods, and when it was over we ''chose'' to leave".
* What happened to the gods who lived on Kobol “with man”?
* Did the gods remain on Kobol after humanity left?
* Given the similarities with the [[Greek Gods|Greek Pantheon]], did the gods decide to follow the 13th tribe to Earth, thus establishing the myths of the Olympian gods?
* Do the Cylons consider Kobol as their spiritual home as well (“The birthplace of us all” – [[Leoben Conoy]], "[[Flesh and Bone]]")?
* Did Boomer's Cylon personality interfere in her attempt at suicide, resulting in her wounding herself, or did her human personality lack the conviction of the act, resulting in the wound? Or was it simply an accident that she missed?
* It seems to be implied from Boomer's more lucid comments that she was afraid she was going to hurt someone that it was her human personality that wanted to kill herself, to prevent herself from carrying out some Cylon mission. It seems unlikely that she could have missed.
* Given that [[Cylon transponder]]s were aboard ''Galactica'', why did the Cylons make such an attempt to destroy ''Galactica'' during their first attack - up to and including deploying nuclear weapons against her? Was the device inactive - if so, why was it in [[CIC]] in the first place ([[Miniseries]])?
**The transponder was probably there so the Cylon Raiders carrying nuclear missiles could target its location in the Mini-Series. Even if ''Galactica'' survived, the transponders would still allow the battlestar to be tracked.

== Analysis ==
*'''Why would Starbuck have sex with Baltar?:''' As Starbuck said, she feels she's a screwup. Based on what we've seen and heard of Starbuck throughout the season, and specifically Apollo's comments in this episode, she has a history of recklessly diving into physical relations with no thought whatsoever as to the consequences; Starbuck instinctively starts thinking something must be wrong when things are going right, such as her growing relationship with Apollo, because she's so used to things going wrong. Also, Lee left her dancing with Baltar in the last episode.
*When Sharon shoots herself, she is holding an automatic pistol, but the sound was that of the larger sidearms carried by pilots when flying off-ship missions (only slightly suppressed), rather than the report of a "normal" pistol being fired.

== Notes ==
*It is 3 days since the events of [[Colonial Day]].
**Kara leaves Baltars quarters at the start of the episode with her blue dress from Colonial Day. It seems more likely that this episode continues directly on from the previous episode.
*There are now 47,897 survivors in the fleet, a net loss of 1 since "Colonial Day".
*[[The Fleet (RDM)|The Fleet]] is beginning to run short of supplies.
*Humans departed Kobol some 2,000 years prior to the setting of the series .
*Kobol is a place where the “gods and man lived together in paradise”.
*Some of the "gods" appear to be buried on Kobol (The [[Tomb of Athena]]).
*[[Socinus]] has been released from the brig and returned to duty (There is a deleted scene to this episode where the Chief gets him out of the brig).
*The "[[R and D TV|R&D TV Animation]]" skit during the credits consists of David Eick transforming Ron Moore into Martha Stewart by shooting lightning from his fingers.
*[[Ellen Tigh]] does not appear in this episode, but she is present in deleted scenes.
*The [[Cylon transponder]] is an indirect nod to [[Battlestar Galactica (TOS)|the original series]], in which [[Apollo (TOS)|Apollo]] and [[Starbuck (TOS)|Starbuck]] use an IFF-type device to identify their [[Cylon Raider#Original Series Raider|Raider]] to Colonial forces when they launch an attack on a Cylon Basestar ([[The Hand of God (TOS)]]).

== Noteworthy Dialogue ==
* ''In the bunk room, when Gaius Baltar interrupts Sharon Valeri’s second attempt at suicide:''
:Sharon Valeri: ''(as she pretends to be cleaning her hand gun)'' What’s going on?
:Gaius Baltar: ''(cautiously)'' Well, I was going to ask you the same question. Actually, I was looking for Lieutenant Thrace but...sometimes it’s good to...talk these things over.
:Number Six: ''(feigning pity)'' Deep down she knows she’s a Cylon, but her conscious mind just won’t accept it.
:Sharon Valeri: Sometimes I have these...dark thoughts.
:Gaius Baltar: What kind of dark thoughts?
:Number Six: Her model is weak, always has been. But in the end she’ll carry out her mission.
:Sharon Valeri: I don’t know, but I’m afraid I’m going to hurt someone. I feel like I ought to be stopped.
:Number Six: ''(moving to the other side of Boomer)'' She can’t be stopped. She’s a Cylon. You can’t help her, Gaius...but you could probably sleep with her. (Baltar reacts with a look of disgust at Six.) That’s what you want, right?
:Gaius Baltar: ''(to Boomer)'' I’m not sure why...sometimes...we must embrace that which opens up for us.
:Sharon Valeri: Embrace?
:Gaius Baltar: Life can be a curse as well as a blessing. (his voice becomes more intense) You will believe me when I tell you: there are far worse things than death in this world...
:Sharon Valeri: So you’re saying…?
:Gaius Baltar: No. No, no, no. What I say...is meaningless. Listen to your heart. Embrace that which you know to be the right decision.
:''(They look at each other as Six regards Baltar with a look of complete incomprehension, then Baltar stands and kisses Boomer on the forehead before walking out of the bunkroom. Seconds later there is the sound of a single gunshot from inside.)''

* ''In ''Galactica's'' landing bay:''
:Lee Adama: Going hunting?
:Kara Thrace: ''(loading ammunition into the Cylon Raider)'' I'm manning the gunnery for the Jump test tomorrow. See if our boy here can shoot anything with our ammo.
:Lee Adama: So it's a boy now.
:Kara Thrace: I changed my mind.
:Lee Adama: You ever wonder why everyone else calls it a "she", but to you, it's a "he"?
:Kara Thrace: That's fascinating, Lee. You should write a paper.
:Lee Adama: Well, that's not really my style. I'm not as smart as...say, Doctor Baltar. How is the Vice President, by the way?
:Kara Thrace: I don't know. Haven't seen him.
:Lee Adama: ''(thinks for a second)'' So...he's a love-them and leave-them kind of guy, I guess.
:Kara Thrace: I guess.
:Lee Adama: Ships just pass in the night...
:Kara Thrace: Yep.
:Lee Adama: Didn't mean a thing.
:Kara Thrace: No.
:Lee Adama: You were just bored, looking for something to do. So frakking the Vice President of the Colonies seemed like a great waste of time!
:Kara Thrace: Do you want something from me?
:Lee Adama: Not a thing-
:Kara Thrace: -because I don't owe you anything.
:Lee Adama: No, you don't owe me anything. because I'm just a CAG, and you're just a pilot. A pilot who can't keep her pants on! Oh, it's just like old times, Kara. Like when you got drunk and you couldn't keep your hands off the Major-
:''(Kara turns around and swings a punch at Lee, but Lee returns the favor by punching Kara in the eye)''
:Lee Adama: Why'd you do it, Kara? Just tell me why.
:Kara Thrace: Because I'm a screwup, Lee. Try to keep that in mind.

* ''As Kara Thrace pilots the Cylon Raider in a weapons test, she contacts Commander Adama:''
:Commander Adama: ''(to Kara)'' Go ahead.
:Kara Thrace: I believed you. Believed in Earth.
:Commander Adama: What are you doing, Starbuck?
:Kara Thrace: Bringing home the cat, sir.
:Commander Adama: We can talk about this.
:Kara Thrace: No, I don't think so.
:Commander Adama: I want you to remember one thing. I do not regret anything that I did. Be sure that whatever you're going to do, you don't regret it later. Do you understand me?
:Kara Thrace: I guess we'll find out. ''(Starbuck uses the FTL computer to Jump to Caprica)''
:Lee Adama: ''Galactica'', Apollo. Starbuck has jumped away. Repeat, Starbuck has jumped away.
:Colonel Tigh: She wasn't scheduled for a Jump test! Where the hell did she go?
:Commander Adama: Home.

== Official Statements ==

=== Regarding Lack of Definitive Information Regarding [[Kobol]] ===
{{from_RDM_blog}}

:"In the last two episodes it is noted by the priestess that the thirteen tribes left [[Kobol]] about "2000 years ago" and the initial estimate of the age of the ruins is the same, but nothing is concrete of course. This is where I have a problem: They were obviously a star faring civilization to leave Kobol to being with. To do so requires information technology. Why is their history of that time so sketchy and lacking of concrete records? Yes it was 2000 years in the past but come on, it's not like they only had [[Wikipedia:papyrus|papyrus]] to write on. "

:I've been presupposing some kind of cataclysm or crisis that occurred soon after mankind settled on the 12 worlds which either wiped out the knowledge base or had it deliberately destroyed for some reason. This doesn't seem that implausible when one considers that a tremendous amount of knowledge from the Greco-Roman tradition was lost after the fall of the [[Wikipedia:Roman Empire|Roman Empire]] and plunged the western world into the so called [[Wikipedia:Dark Ages|Dark Ages]]. Clearly, the Colonials did not fall all the way back to papyrus, and they do in fact, know that they are descendants of refugees from Kobol, hence the term "[[Colonies]]." They must have possessed star-faring technology at the time of the exodus, but I don't know how far we'll go into this specific backstory in the series, however.

=== Other Statements ===

* ''[[Jamie Bamber]] talks about his response to the argument held between [[Kara Thrace]] and [[Lee Adama]] in this episode:''

: It's sort of an explosion of jealousy that is a complete surprise to him because I don't think he's ... he's not fully aware of what he feels. There's something quite like a gut reaction that really was exciting to play. It was a surprise to me. [http://gateworld.net/galactica/articles/bamber01.shtml]
I removed the line about Ellen or her infedelity being the cause of Tigh's alcoholism because it is clearly wrong in light of "[[Scattered]]" and the deleted scenes from that episode. The flashbacks in that episode clearly show that Tigh already has a drinking problem when he first meets Adama. I removed the line about Ellen or her infedelity being the cause of Tigh's alcoholism because it is clearly wrong in light of "Scattered" and the deleted scenes from that episode. The flashbacks clearly show that Tigh already has a drinking problem when he first meets Adama. == Overview ==

: ''[[Saul Tigh|Colonel Tigh's]] world is turned upside down when [[Ellen Tigh|his wife]] arrives on ''[[Galactica]]'' -- but is she all she claims to be?''

== Summary ==
* [[Laura Roslin]] comes aboard ''[[Galactica]]'' as [[William Adama|Adama]] receives a report that [[Gaius Baltar|Baltar’s]] [[Cylon detector]] is operational.
* Unable to shake off [[Leoben Conoy|Conoy’s]] words to her ([[Flesh and Bone]]), she wants Adama to take the test first; he reluctantly agrees.
* When a lone [[Cylon Raider]] shows up, [[Lee Adama]] is ordered to intercept, and [[Saul Tigh|Tigh]] is stunned to learn Adama is off-ship.
* The Raider is crippled, and a [[Raptor]] is dispatched to gather intel on it, particularly how its [[FTL]] drive operates.
* Adama returns to ''Galactica'' on a [[Raptor]] with a further shock for Tigh: his wife, [[Ellen Tigh|Ellen]].
* Roslin calls Baltar to check on the progress of Adama’s Cylon test – only to find Adama has cancelled so that a woman called “Ellen” can be tested. Roslin orders Baltar to restart Adama’s test immediately.
* Roslin summons Tigh to ''[[Colonial One]]'', reveals her suspicions regarding Adama, and challenges a defensive Tigh over Adama’s behavior in leaving ''Galactica'' unannounced.
* Tigh takes the wind out of Roslin’s sails when he states Adama was off-ship so he could collect Tigh’s missing wife.
* After Tigh has left her office, Roslin calls Baltar and orders him to stop Adama’s test and resume Ellen’s.
* Later, at a dinner in Adama’s quarters, Ellen behaves with a mixture of her old self – trying to play footsie with Lee Adama under the table, and trying to flirt with him over the table – and a strange curiosity concerning [[Earth]].
* Adama deflects her probing by asking how it could be that she got aboard a ship, the ''[[Rising Star (RDM)|Rising Star]]'', without anyone having any knowledge of her or of treating her during her alleged 3 weeks of being unconscious.
* Ellen simply shrugs off the questions in her apparently drunken state and breaks up the party with her “drunken” playing.
* As she and her husband return to their quarters, they encounter Baltar, with whom she openly flirts, both annoying Tigh and raising [[Number Six|Six]]’s curiosity.
* After Baltar has departed, Ellen deflects her husband’s anger at her behavior by claiming Adama wants her, then dragging Tigh after Baltar.
* In Baltar’s lab, a row is brewing over the various tests that should have been carried out; things become more complicated when Tigh and his wife arrive, and the disagreements and suspicions become a three-way argument, which is broken up when Adama, Lee and Tigh are summoned to [[CIC]].
* The Cylon Raider has stopped behaving oddly, and is on a collision course for ''Galactica''. [[Alert Fighters]] are dispatched at Tigh’s order, and the Raider is destroyed.
* Later, back in Baltar’s lab, Ellen’s test results come through and are apparently green. Baltar, however simply states to Six that having everything turn up green makes life a lot easier.

=== On Caprica: ===
*[[Karl Agathon|Helo]] and [[Sharon Valerii (Caprica copy)|Valerii]] are trying to avoid the Cylons by running through the storm drains under a city.
*Valerii has a plan -- she claims to have overheard the Cylons discussing a huge base at [[Delphi]], she believes they can steal a ship from there and get off the planet.
*[[Aaron Doral|Doral]] and [[Number Six|Six]] are definitely affected by the fact that even though Valerii has run off, she is experiencing emotions they have never had -- as is Helo.

== Questions ==
*Is [[Ellen Tigh]] a [[Cylon agent|Cylon]]?
*What is [[Gaius Baltar|Baltar]] hoping to gain from keeping the test results secret?
**Answer: The official season 1 companion book explains this more fully. Basically, Baltar does not know if the Cylons in the Fleet are capable of communicating with each other. That's why in "[[Flesh and Bone]]" he didn't call in the Marines to grab Sharon as soon as she left his lab; if he reveals one or two of the Cylons, while more are still at large, he is afraid that the others will then target him for assassination. More or less, Baltar's plan is to screen out as many people as he can to find all of the Cylons, and then reveal them in one fell swoop. Even if they don't possess a communications net they might just realize his Cylon detector works if one of their number like Boomer is revealed by the test; he wants them to think it doesn't really work. Alternatively, as it might take years to test the entire Fleet, Baltar would do what he will do later on in "[[Resistance (episode)|Resistance]]"; find one Cylon, then interrogate it to find out who the other Cylons are, etc. For the moment, he is biding his time.
** This does not, however, account for Six's apparent ignorance of whether or not Ellen is a Cylon. If her question on this to Baltar was not purely rhetorical, and if she does not know, what does this say about her nature? At the very least, it would indicate that she is not privy to all that Baltar does and knows. This has implications for her precise nature, what activates her appearances, and what happens when she is dormant.

== Analysis ==
*Could Ellen Tigh be a Cylon? ''See [[Cylon agent speculation#Ellen Tigh?|Cylon agent speculation]]''.
*Continuing from the previous episode, Caprica-Sharon now seems to be honestly trying to lead Helo away from the Cylons and truly escape.
*This is the first mention of the city of [[Delphi]] and Helo's hostile reaction to the news of its being used as a Cylon hub. Plausibly the emotional reaction is due to Delphi being a spiritual center for the Twelve Colonies.
*The test apparently takes 11 hours to generate results (although Boomer’s result in “Flesh and Bone” was obtained in far less time than this – "a couple of minutes", according to Baltar, and about 60 seconds of screen-time.)
**Baltar claims in [[Resistance (episode)|Resistance]] that he allowed Boomer to believe she was human "for [his] own purposes". Does he have the ability to determine other Cylon infiltrators in a much shorter timeframe than he chooses to admit in this episode? Perhaps he was just going through the math in his head - but then why the half-serious jokes about suicide as he contemplates the task?
*Perhaps a "positive" result with a real Cylon takes much less time, but it takes 11 hours to be definitely sure someone isn't a Cylon.
*Is it possible that the Cylon Raider is there to transmit instructions to other Cylons within the fleet? In [[Final Cut]], we see that they can receive messages from their agents.
**In a deleted scene, they mention that they noticed a high-frequency burst which could have been a Cylon within the fleet sending out a signal, but they couldn't track which ship it came from.

== Notes ==
*The script was originally called "Secrets and Lies". However, "'''Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down'''" is the official title for the episode, according to [[Ronald D. Moore]].
*It is 3 days since the events of "[[Flesh and Bone]]".
*There are now 47,905 survivors in the fleet, a loss of 49 since "Flesh and Bone". Compared to other casualty figures in the first season, this is unusually high for a three-day period.
**Are Boomer (tested last episode) and Baltar himself included in this figure?
*Billy’s relationship with Dualla is picking up, despite his attempts to pump her for information
*Baltar apparently has no intention of being honest about the results of his Cylon tests.
*''Galactica'' has a forward observation lounge that has become a much sought-after trysting-place, with individuals and couples rotated through it at regular intervals.
*The Cylons have established a major base at [[Delphi]], another major city on Caprica.
*Helo curses the Cylons for choosing Delphi as their base.
*The opera music that Baltar is listening to in his lab while talking to and getting intimate with Number Six is titled "Battlestar Operatica", and was written and composed by [[Bear McCreary]]. It is sung in Italian, and directly relates to Baltar's situation. The lyrics translate: "Woe upon your Cylon heart / There's a toaster in your head/ And it wears high heels / Number Six calls to you / The Cylon Detector beckons / Your girlfriend is a toaster / Woe upon your Cylon heart / Alas, disgrace! Alas, sadness and misery! / The toaster has a pretty dress / Red like its glowing spine / Number Six whispers / By your command" (translation given in the liner notes for the Season 1 soundtrack, reposted [[Soundtrack (Season 1)#Lyrics and Translations|on this page]], with permission).
*[[Edward James Olmos]], who portrays [[William Adama]], also directed this episode. He was originally to direct "[[Flesh and Bone]]" but could not do so due to scheduling conflicts.
*The "R&D TV Animation" skit during the credits consists of Ron Moore substituting himself for a knight and the knight smashing David Eick's head in with a mace.

== Noteworthy Dialogue ==

* ''As Commamder Adama and Laura Roslin talk in the CIC:''

:Commander Adama: Madame President, we are the proud owners of the universe's first bona fide Cylon detector.
:Laura Roslin: Well, that is great news. So... when do we begin?
:Commander Adama: Doctor Baltar would like to start widespread testing as soon as possible, but there are some serious limitations, because he can only do one person at a time and verification takes hours.
:Laura Roslin: So, who's going to go first?
:Commander Adama: (thinking for a second) The test... right. I think people in sensitive positions should go first.
:Laura Roslin: I completely agree. How about you?
:Commander Adama: Excuse me?
:Laura Roslin: If you're a Cylon, I'd like to know.
:Commander Adama: If I'm a Cylon, you're really screwed.
:(Adama and Roslin both start laughing)
:Laura Roslin: Seriously, I do think you should go first. Show everyone in the fleet that they can trust the people at the top.
:Commander Adama: Well then, maybe YOU should go first. (silence) All right... I'll go first.

* ''As Commander Adama, Colonel Tigh, Ellen Tigh, Apollo, and Laura Roslin are eating dinner:''
:Ellen Tigh: So Bill, now the question on everyone's mind -- and, I do mean everyone -- is "Where's Earth?" and "When are we going to get there?"
:Commander Adama: Yeah... that's classified information.
:Ellen Tigh: Oh, there's that word again!
:Colonel Tigh: Ellen, leave the man alone.
:Ellen Tigh: Come on! If there aren't privileges to being an XO's wife, then what's the point? I mean, Bill, we're all family here, so come on!
:Laura Roslin: The need for secrecy is paramount, Ellen. Oh, I'm sorry. Perhaps you don't know that the Cylons look like us now.
:Ellen Tigh: Oh... that. Yes. Yes, I knew that.
:Laura Roslin: It's recent news. Most people just found out a few days ago.
:Ellen Tigh: (thinking) A thing like that would travel fast.
:Commander Adama: Any one of us could be a Cylon.
:(the entire table goes silent)
:Ellen Tigh: BOO!
:(everyone jumps in their seat, but Ellen and Saul start laughing)

== Official Statements ==

*"'Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down' was originally called 'Secrets and Lies', or 'Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down' by Jeff Vlaming. And when I saw those titles on the script, I knew we had to go with 'Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down'. It was too good. Too good a title to let lie on the cutting room floor." -- Ronald D. Moore [[podcast]]
*"'Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down' began life as a very different episode than it ultimately came out to be. It was originally going to be a riff on 'Crimson Tide'." -- Ronald D. Moore [[podcast]]
*"It did feel right that, perhaps, there was one place; that perhaps there was one area of the ship, which accepted a window or a port to look out and that it would be a fairly confined space for the crew on these very long, deep space missions that probably lasted months, if not years. And that there might be a place where they can go to and just stargaze. And in this situation, it seemed like there would be a lot of people lining up to try and look out at the stars, you know, a break from the monotony of staring at metal walls." -- Ronald D. Moore [[podcast]], talking about the observation area of the ''[[Galactica]]''
*"The long and the short of it was that we had just come out of a very heavy, very dark, very [[Flesh and Bone|disturbing episode]]. And the very next episode was supposed to be 'Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down' which was all about a very disturbing, very dark, very (sort of) unhappy episode where our two -- two of our lead characters started pointing guns at one another. So there came a point when I just decided, well, let's just punt. Let's not do the dark and brooding episode. Let's try a different tone. Let's see if the show can withstand something lighter. Let's try something that's closer to a comedy, or as close to a comedy as ''Galactica'' can withstand." -- Ronald D. Moore [[podcast]]
== Overview ==

: ''Continuing from the events of "[[Water]]", [[Galactica type battlestar|battlestar]] ''[[Galactica]]'' and [[The Fleet (RDM)|the Fleet]] face a chronic water shortage. Their only recourse: persuade 1,500 prisoners on the transport vessel ''[[Astral Queen]]'' to help them mine ice from a nearby moon. ''

== Summary ==
* ''[[Galactica]]'s'' fleet-critical water supplies have been sabotaged ([[Water]]).
* A source of water has been located on a nearby moon - but it is in the form of ice, and must be mined, which will require a crew of around 1,000.
* As that number cannot be spared from ''Galactica's'' crew, and it is unlikely civilians will volunteer, it is determined to try and enlist the help of the prisoners on the ''[[Astral Queen]]''.
* [[Laura Roslin|Roslin]] won’t have the prisoners forced into the work, so [[Lee Adama]] suggests the prisoners who volunteer could be awarded points to go towards their freedom.
* This idea does not go down well with Commander [[William Adama|Adama]], who is already at odds with his son over his new position as "special advisor" to the President ([[Water]]).
* However, Roslin decides to send a delegation lead by Lee Adama to the ''Astral Queen'' to put the idea to the prisoners. To address Adama's fears that they might inadvertently release dangerous prisoners into the Fleet's community, [[Billy Keikeya]] is selected to go as well and screen the prisoners prior to selection.
* As a further snub to his son, Adama insists military personnel also go – one to assist in the screening, who will report directly to him – and one to ensure the selected prisoners can handle the equipment that will be used to extract the ice.
* [[Anastasia Dualla]] is "volunteered" by Billy for the first role, [[Cally]] is eventually selected for the second.
* Arriving on the ''Astral Queen'', Lee puts the situation to the prisoners, and outlines the deal: help us and earn points towards your freedom.
* No-one volunteers. Instead, the nominated leader of the prisoners politely refuses the offer. Billy Keikeya recognizes him as [[Tom Zarek]], a political agitator from [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Sagittaron|Sagittaron]].
* While Dualla and Billy argue the merits of Zarek as a "prisoner of conscience" or terrorist – Billy almost idolizing him, Lee meets with Zarek to try and persuade him to help the fleet.
* On ''Galactica'', Adama meets with [[Gaius Baltar]], who is still equivocating over his [[Cylon detector]]. When Adama pushes Baltar into a corner, the doctor tries to admit he can’t actually build the detector.
* This releases a torrent of anger from Baltar’s virtual [[Number Six|Six]], which terrifies him into submission. She then instructs him on what to ask for in order to make the detector: a nuclear warhead.
* When Six only reveals a part of how this can be used to make the detector, Baltar is forced to think things through himself, and realizes it will actually work. Adama agrees to let Baltar have a warhead.
* On the ''Astral Queen'', a planned break-out takes place, and ''Galactica’s'' delegation is taken hostage.
* With the ship in his control, Zarek demands the immediate resignation of Roslin and her government on the grounds that, having never been elected, they do not represent the people.
* As Zarek uses Lee to try and gain insight into the dynamic between Roslin and Adama, an assault mission, led by [[Kara Thrace|Kara "Starbuck" Thrace]], is put together using ''Galactica’s'' [[Raptor]]s and [[Marines|Marine]] contingent. As a crack sharpshooter, Starbuck is ordered by Adama to kill Zarek if she gets the chance.
* Adama then tries to negotiate with Zarek himself, but is rebuffed. Lee Adama realizes the truth: Zarek wants Adama to send in the troops, believing a bloodbath aboard the ''Queen'' will bring down Roslin’s government.
* The Marines and Starbuck arrive in the Raptors and start cutting their way into the ship.
* In the cells, one of the prisoners decides he doesn’t like the way Cally has been “mocking” him, and decides to teach her a lesson.
* As Starbuck and her Marines enter the ship, matters come to a head as the prisoner shoots Cally, wounding her, after he clearly tried to rape her, and she bit off a piece of his ear.
* Lee Adama and Zarek rush to the cell where the prisoner is holding Cally. In the confusion, Lee obtains a handgun and puts it to Zarek’s head, giving him a choice: die immediately, or work with his men to supply the Fleet with water, and in return he’ll get to keep the ''Astral Queen'' and get his elections.
* The Marines then make their presence felt, as Starbuck takes a shot at Zarek – who is saved by Lee Adama.
* Roslin and Adama are initially less than pleased at these arrangements. Lee doesn’t really care. The prisoners are helping with the water, even if they have control of the ''Astral Queen'' they are still reliant on the Fleet for supplies, and under Colonial law, Roslin would have to face elections in seven months anyway.
* Later, Lee informs Roslin that he didn’t mean to offend her with his views, and that when the elections come, he’ll vote for her. His honesty causes her to reveal the truth about her cancer and the fact that she might not be alive come the elections.

===On Caprica===
* [[Karl Agathon|Helo]] and [[Sharon Valerii (Caprica copy)|Valerii]] reach a relatively undamaged city.
* As they explore the city, they are observed by [[Aaron Doral|Doral]] and [[Number Six|Six]] from a rooftop.
* Doral and Six discuss their heritage as Cylons - the "children of humanity", Six expressing regret that humans must be destroyed. Doral is less compassionate: parents need to die to let the children come into their own.

== Questions ==

*Both Six and Zarek make references to "humanity's children", is there a connection?
*Is Zarek genuinely willing to die for his beliefs?
*Can Baltar really use a nuclear warhead to build a Cylon detector, or does Six have some other plan? ([[Flesh and Bone|Answer]]).
*Will elections really be held in seven months? (Answer: [[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I|Yes, elections will be held]])

== Analysis ==
*'''Ship of the week concept/budget restraints:''' In their initial write-ups for the series, executive producers [[Ron Moore]] and [[David Eick]] initially envisioned having many episodes or most episodes involve going out into the refugee fleet and solving problems that arose within it and little fiefdoms that people would start to set up. However, as they state in the podcast for this episode, "Bastille Day" was the only episode of the first season in which they actually did this, and by season 2 they have said that they've more or less abandoned the idea (at least, it's no longer the "stock storyline" they originally thought it would be). The reason they dropped this idea, they say, is because '''"Bastille Day" went incredibly over-budget''': the ''Astral Queen'' prison interior used up all of the money they had thought would be spread out over the entire first season to create sets for several other ships that they might visit. Building a new set for each ship-of-the-week turned out to be such an expensive undertaking that it was untenable.
*'''Surviving cities on Caprica:''' The Cylons apparently did not nuke every single city on Caprica, such as they did [[Caprica City]], thought they did nuke most of them. Ron Moore points out in the podcast that at first this was just the plot expediency of needing an environment for Helo to interact in, which of course then asks the question "Why are some cities not nuked?" which then becomes a plot point for later episodes (soon Helo will find that at the least, the Cylons wanted a a few surviving cities to use as foward bases).
*'''Helo shouting in the empty city:''' It seems a little counter-intuitive that Helo would be shouting loudly to see if anyone might hear him, as the Cylons might find out his position. However, in Helo's defense we the viewers are only coming in to see him at this instant; Caprica-Sharon and Helo might have spent many boring hours beforehand wandering through an empty city, before Helo finally got fed up and started shouting. Also, it's only been 12 days since the Cylon attack, and Helo has no idea how far over Caprica they've spread yet.
*'''Boxey's only regular episode:''' This is the only episode of the regular series that [[Boxey (RDM)|Boxey]] appears in (He appeared in the [[Miniseries]] beforehand). According to the podcast, when the Miniseries was created the writers envisioned Boxey as being a major recurring character in most episodes of the series. However, on a case by case basis they found that inserting a child like Boxey did not harmonize with many of the dark scripts on the series, and once they show got underway and found its flow, they simply couldn't think of ways to write him into upcoming scripts. By the beginning of Season 2, they realized they hadn't been using him, and officially decided to simply abandon the character and consciously never tried to use him again.
*'''The flight briefing scene:''' Starbuck's flight briefing she gives as acting-CAG seems a bit "out of character" with what the series would later develop as its "norm", and shows some of the learning curve in the first few episodes before the writers and actors got a firm handle on just exactly how everything worked on the show. Starbuck as a character is in full "Top Gun" mode, even wearing aviator sunglasses with a stogie cigar in hand, while giving a very irreverant briefing. Actress Katee Sackhoff and the writers have said that after the first few episodes (after the time of "Bastille Day") they learned to start adding in "more of Katee into Starbuck", and Starbuck as a character smoothed out a great deal by the middle of the season. The other big oddity with this scene is that it's the only scene in the entire regualr series (post-Miniseries) to include Boxey, and his presence seems forced (Moore and Eick point this out in the podcast). Why would Starbuck bring a 10 year old to a flight briefing on a military ship? The concept pitch seems understandable on paper: Boxey is supposed to be the orphan kid the pilots adopted who lives with them and is sort of their mascot/gofer/helper, and as such would help Starbuck with a briefing. However Boxey didn't really get any buildup scenes to this, so here it seems that, without much prior explanation, there's just a kid helping Starbuck give a briefing. Some of the several quirks in the first few episodes which soon disappear.
*'''Tigh's momentary drinking relapse:''' In the Miniseries, Tigh went from completely incompetent drunk by the end of the story, continuing into "[[33]]" where Commander Adama even notes how good it is that Tigh isn't drinking anymore. With the Cylon attack, Tigh more or less decided to quit drinking. However, he has a bit of a relapse here and has a few shots, and is a little tipsy in front of some crewmen (though he's not slurring his speach and stumbling over furniture; he's a functioning alcoholic). Throughout the season he oscilates back and forth in his struggle with his alcoholism, sometimes he has relapses, though on the whole on his own he manages to seriously curtail his old drinking habit for a time (without being in a support group or anything, just by himself). Still, he relapses here: this is another instance of the series meeting its [[Naturalistic science fiction|goal to make a very realistic series]]: to make Tigh have an epiphantic, life-changing moment and adamantly stop drinking forever from the Miniseries onward would have been hackneyed and unrealistic. In real life, Tigh would have an ongoing struggle with his alcohol addiction, and even when trying to cut back find himself ''not'' meeting his goals from time to time; the characters on the series are flawed, human, and real.
*'''Starbuck also being a sniper:''' Starbuck simply also being a sharpshooter, "best shot in or ''out'' of the cockpit" stretches the credibility of these scenes: shooting in a Viper and shooting a sniper rifle are entirely different things. The force of moving the plot foward and trying to shoehorn a major character in becomes a bit obvious. Ron Moore actually conceded this point in his blog on [http://blog.scifi.com/battlestar/archives/2005/04/ April 11th, 2005], saying that it would have been jarring to introduce a new Marine sniper, but they had to find a way to keep main character Starbuck as part of the action:
::"I concede the point...we chose to go with the dramatic needs rather than the "real" choices. Making Kara the sniper was simply a way of providing more tension and drama into the final sequence of "Bastille Day" rather than going with a brand-new Marine sniper who the audience would have no investment in or identification with...It's a judgement call, frankly. We're always striving to keep things as "real" as we can make them, but we are still producing a television series and we're telling a story, so sometimes we bend the rules to make the show more compelling or to avoid awkward scenes that actually slow it down and dissipate the momentum."
*'''Cally becomes a bigger character:''' Starting with this episode, [[Cally]] started to become a larger character on the series, as noted by Moore and Eick in the podcast (see [[Bastille Day#Official statements|Official Statements]], below). Originally she was supposed to die, but instead she shows "balls" and bites a man's ear off in an attention-grabbing moment. Many fans and critics started noticing her more after this point.

== Notes ==

* Richard Hatch played the character of [[Apollo (TOS)|Apollo]] in the [[Battlestar Galactica (TOS)|original ''Battlestar Galactica'']] television series.
* Events here take place 4 days after those of "[[Water]]".
* In the [[Miniseries]] the ''[[Astral Queen]]'' is apparently a liner, rather than a prison ship.
** During a briefing, [[Billy Keikeya|Billy]] informs [[Laura Roslin|President Roslin]] that: "The Captain of the ''Astral Queen'' wants you to know that he has nearly 500 convicted criminals under heavy guard in his cargo hold. They were being transported to a penal station when the attack happened."
** In the re-cap clip shown at the top of this episode, Billy's lines are re-dubbed so that he says, "The Captain of the ''Astral Queen'' wants you to know that he has 1,500 prisoners under heavy guard."
** Instead of being taken to a penal station, as in the [[Miniseries]], [[Lee Adama]] states that the prisoners were being transferred to [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Caprica|Caprica]] for parole hearings.
** For the purposes of the increased number of prisoners, the ''Astral Queen'' becomes a prison ship.
* [[Kara Thrace|Starbuck]] is an expert sharpshooter with a rifle.
* The Colonials are going to be facing a fuel shortage at some point ([[The Hand of God (RDM)|Resolved in a later episode]]).
* [[Raptor]]s are designed for Marine assault and include an extendable docking skirt in their underside that can be pressurized (and possibly used in rescue operations?).
* ''Galactica'' has a small contingent of Marines onboard - perhaps around the 20-30 mark.
* ''Galactica'' has five "remaining" nuclear warheads.
* The [[Lords of Kobol]] are modeled on / parallel the [[Greek Gods|Olympian gods]] of Greek mythology.
* The quip made by the ''[[Astral Queen]]'''s captain, "I'm a bus driver, not a warden", is a homage to the original ''Star Trek'' television series. It is similar to Doctor Leonard McCoy's trademark quote, "I'm a doctor, not a bricklayer", or whatever fits at the time in the latter portion of the statement.
* The setup for this plot was likely inspired by the episode "[[The Gun on Ice Planet Zero, Part I]]". In both episodes, a group of criminals was conscripted from a prison ship to work on the icy surface of a hostile planet. A notable difference between the two episodes lies in how the workers were chosen. While the workers in "Bastille Day" were chosen in part for their expendability, the conscripts in [[The Gun on Ice Planet Zero, Part I]] were chosen for their expertise in harsh environments and in demolition work. Also different was the prisoners' motivation to take on the work. In "Bastille Day", the prisoners are offered the possibility of earning their freedom, whereas the prisoners in [[The Gun on Ice Planet Zero, Part I]] were offered nothing overtly other than the fear that the fleet might be destroyed without their services. A number of the take the assignment in the hopes of escaping during the action.
*According to the DVD commentary for the episode, the startling scene when Number Six yells in Baltar's face that "they're going to throw you out of an airlock!" was a visual homage taken from the film "[http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099871/ Jacob's Ladder]", which has a similar startling close up shot. Tricia Helfer was given scary makeup for the shot, but in such a slight way that it is difficult for the eye to see what's wrong with the shot, but the audience can tell on some level that something's wrong. If you pause during her close-up shot, you can see that she's wearing contact lenses that make her eyes look unnaturally bright, and a mouthpiece of fake teeth which are bent out of shape and unnaturally large.
*The "R&D TV Animation" skit during the credits consists of Ron Moore squashing David Eick into a ball and tossing him through the basketball hoop in the office.
*The building seen in the first scene with Helo and Sharon is actually the [[wikipedia:Vancouver Public Library|Vancouver Public Library]], one of the most recognizable buildings in the city of Vancouver.
*Major [[Cottle]], ''Galactica''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s ship doctor, is first mentioned in this episode, although he will not appear until next episode.
*President Roslin's hair style changes starting with this episode, from the straight-down hairstyle she had since the [[Miniseries]], to the swept-back style which she would sport through the end of season 2.

== Noteworthy Dialogue ==

=== Choosing Sides ===

Adama: Every man has to decide for themselves which side they are on.
Apollo: I didn't know we were picking sides. (walks off)
Adama: That's why you haven't picked one yet.

=== Children of Humanity ===

''On Cylon-occupied Caprica:''

Doral: She's good.
Six: So far.
Doral: Jealous?
Six: This all makes me so sad.
Doral: (matter-of-fact) They would have destroyed themselves anyway. They deserve what they got.
Six: We're the children of humanity. That makes them our parents in a sense.
Doral: True - but parents have to die. It's the only way children come into their own.

''Later, aboard the 'Astral Queen', in a broadcast by Tom Zarek:''

Tom Zarek: I make these demands not for me....but for you, the people. The survivors of the holocaust and the children of humanity's future. I am Tom Zarek, and this is the first day of a new era.

== Official Statements ==
*In the DVD commentary for "[[Bastille Day]]", David Eick and Ron D. Moore talk about Cally's character, and how initial drafts had her being killed:

:Eick: Nicki Clyne, who you see here playing Cally, was somebody who in the Miniseries, I remember Michael (Rymer) and I cast just on the basis of her look, 'cause we thought she was really cute, she kind of reminded us of a young [http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001167/ Shelley Duvall]. [...] she turned out to be so good that we— in launching the series we started talking about ways to involve her and I'm very proud of a moment coming up where she does something rather nasty, that...
:RDM: Well she almost died! '''She was gonna die in the intial drafts of this'''.
:Eick: That's right! He kills her! He rapes and kills her! And they're telling us we're too dark ''this'' year.
:RDM: Oh, I know. The second season is so much darker. And I don't think they even care. Yeah, Cally, Nicki, I hate to tell ya, but the bullseye was on Nicki here. And I can't even tell you why we decided it was, no I take that back I think it was your note; you said you wanted Cally to fight back and really show some balls in this scene. She bit his ear off...
:Eick: I said, "She bites his frakking ear off" and I was totally being...you know, just ''illustrative''! I didn't really mean it!
:RDM: And I wrote, "she bites his ear off"!
:Eick: "And I got the draft, and she bites his ear off! I was like "that's great!"
:RDM: '''And from that moment on, I think, she really became part of the show'''. In a real sense, once she had gone through that and survived, and you know Tyrol and the gang come in and see her in the hospital at the end you kind of felt like she is one of the family.

*In issue #348 of ''Starlog'' magazine, p.31, Nicki Clyne (Cally) said:

:"They used this mixture of corn syrup and coloring for the blood, which was extremely sticky...I had to squeeze this sponge of icky goo all over myself, and I had it on the ''whole'' day. I couldn't wipe off the blood for lunchtime and put it back on, because of continuity reasons. So for the entire day I had my shirt completely stuck to me, and my face was all sticky — it ''wasn't'' a nice feeling. When I ate my lunch, no one wanted to site with me. I even forgot I had this guck on me. I was walking around, throwing popcorn in my mouth and everyone was backing off and staring at me. I'm going "Hey, what's your problem?" Then it occurred to me, "Oh yeah, I look like Death! Right. OK!""

This list is fairly self-explanatory; these are [[deleted scenes]] that never made the final cut of the episode for any number of reasons.

When otherwise noted, all links below lead to the Sci-Fi Channel website and are playable using the [http://www.apple.com/quicktime Quicktime Media Player]. The files are relatively small, around 1 to 2 MB; therefore, you may want to download them before you play them, should you be on a narrowband (e.g. dialup modem) connection.
== Miniseries ==

Right now, we are not in the position of distributing or providing links to any digitized video files of these deleted scenes.

They are available on the Region 1 version of the [[Special:Booksources&isbn=0783288263|Battlestar Galactica Miniseries DVD]]. Below is a list, as they appear on that DVD.

* [[Billy Keikeya|Billy]] meets [[Laura Roslin]] aboard ''[[Colonial Heavy 798]]''; Roslin has just heard that she has terminal breast cancer.
* As [[Lee Adama|Apollo]]'s [[Viper (RDM)|Viper]] is about to dock with ''[[Galactica]]'', [[Aaron Doral]] poses questions to the film crew as to why Vipers and their landings are not automated.
* [[Sharon Valerii (Galactica copy)|Boomer]] and [[Karl Agathon|Helo]] make a difficult landing onboard the ''[[Galactica]]'', replete with incomplete CGI.
* [[Cally]], [[Socinus]] and [[Prosna]] talk about Valerii's and [[Galen Tyrol|Tyrol]]'s forbidden relationship.
* (Extended Scene) Billy and [[Anastasia Dualla|Dualla]] walk out of the unisex head to rejoin [[William Adama|Commander Adama]] and Roslin.
* Adama remotely detonates ''[[Galactica]]'''s remaining munitions, as a part of the pre-decommissioning ceremonies. (Adama implies that his father was a military man in this scene, though we later learn that his father was a civil liberties lawyer)
* (Alternate Scene) Apollo has the Cylon missile chase him through the Colonial Fleet training range on the [[Trevor Moon]], subsequently destroying the missile.
* Roslin and 798's crew find Apollo's Viper adrift and recover the ship.
* [[Kara Thrace|Starbuck]] and the [[Viper (RDM)|Mark II Vipers]] take on three unsuspecting [[Cylon Raiders]].
* Tyrol brings [[Boxey (RDM)|Boxey]] to the pilot's bunk, telling the child that the ''Galactica'' is a very lucky ship.
* Roslin and Billy discuss the current situation; Roslin questions Billy's support of her.
* Cally confronts Chief Tyrol regarding his relationship with Valerii prior to boarding [[Ragnar Station]].
* An entire subplot was cut involving Boxey spread out over several scenes. First, the opening scene where Boomer is confused about where she is and what she is doing is extended with Boomer finding a towel in her bag and using it to wipe her dirty hands. Next, Boomer returns to her room after replacing the detonator and encounters Boxey, who picks the lock on her locker and goes through her duffle bag, taking the aforementioned towel. The next scene is another extension during Tyrol's investigation of the sabotaged water tank in which he touches a piece of metal and gets dirt on his gloves of the same type Boomer wipes off at the beginning of the episode. In the next scene, Boxey accompanies Tyrol to see Boomer after she discovers water and waits outside while they talk, attempting to sell Crashdown some [[ambrosia]] he swiped from the engine room. Finally, after Boomer and Tyrol finish talking Tyrol notices Boxey is holding the towel he swiped from Boomer earlier, makes the connection between the stains on the towel and the dirt from the water tank, and realizes that Boomer may actually be responsible.
