Botanical Cruisers are ships with domes that may serve as space-borne vacation ships, or are used as greenhouses for specialty food or plant-matter production.

At least two Botanical Cruisers escape the initial Cylon attack on the Colonies.

New President Laura Roslin visits this ship while gathering a caravan from surviving civilian ships surrounding the colony of Caprica. A young girl named Cami and her grandmother are on this Botanical Cruiser with many other survivors.

However, the particular ship that Roslin visits lacks an FTL drive, and the light-speed-enabled part of President Roslin's caravan of refugee ships are forced to leave that Botanical Cruiser and many other sublight ships behind when Cylon Raiders discover the fleet of ships. This ship and others without FTL drives are presumed destroyed by the Cylons (Miniseries).

At least one other Cruiser exists in the Fleet. It is successfully escorted to the algae planet through a dangerous star cluster, although it appears the biota did not fare so well in the presence of so much ionizing radiation (The Passage).

Notes
*The Botanical Cruiser was an homage to the Agro Ships from the original Battlestar Galactica, which themselves were re-used models from the botanical spacecraft from the movie Silent Running, a Universal/MCA movie that special effects guru John Dykstra worked on a few years prior to the Original Series.
Command Navigation Program

Immora: correct article

:This article details how the Cylons compromised Colonial Fleet defenses by cracking the Colonial flight operating system in the Re-imagined Series.
:For other related computer or biological attacks, see Virus.

Developed by computer scientist Gaius Baltar, the Command Navigation Program (CNP) is a operating system utilized by the Colonial Fleet and some civilian spaceships in the Twelve Colonies of Kobol.

Installed in the central computers of Vipers and Raptors and in the navigation computers of almost all battlestars, the CNP was more than two years in the making.
<br clear="all">

Backdoors
Unbeknownst to Dr. Baltar, his lover and co-writer of the CNP turns out to be a version of the humanoid Cylon known as Number Six.

The Cylon infiltrator programmed backdoors into the CNP so that the Cylon attack forces could render any ships that use the operating system to shut itself down by a remote command.

Battlestars and fighters begin to shut down during the Colonial defensive "as if a switch were flipped." Communications officer Dualla describes reports of "system failures" throughout the Fleet and how at least one battlestar loses power when the attack begins, which indicates, that the Cylons use the CNP to damage and, in at least one case, disable capital ships as well (Miniseries).
<br clear="all">

Usage of the CNP on Galactica
The CNP was previously received by Galactica, but the program was never loaded into the primary memory of the ship's navigation computer.

Galactica herself is spared from Cylon computer attacks as the CNP is not loaded on any of her computers, nor were her computer systems networked, sparing the ship from any backdoor or cracking attempts.

Unfortunately, Galactica does support a modern squadron of Viper Mark VII fighters, which received the upgrade. As a result, the squadron is massacred by two Raiders on their way back to Caprica.

Lieutenant Felix Gaeta has the CNP source code purged from the mainframe on Baltar's instruction. The program is also retrograded on the flight systems of surviving Mark VII Vipers, Raptors, and civilian ships (Miniseries).

Notes
*The CNP is not a virus, nor is it a worm or Trojan Horse, but an example of backdoor exploitation of a secured computer system through a secreted password or other hidden access in order to gain command privileges.
*The backdoor tactic differs from the Cylons' older infiltration tactics used in the first Cylon War of using their computers to seek exploits within and forcibly enter ("crack") a Colonial computer, whereby the attacked computer is infected with a virus that causes havoc on the Colonial computer.
**Baltar is captured and returned to Galactica
**The star goes nova and destroys the algae planet
**The Cylons box the entire line of Number Threes

*Sometime between "Rapture" and "Taking a Break From All Your Worries":
**Joe's bar is established on an unused stretch of one of Galacticas hangar decks

Taking a Break From All Your Worries
:No timeline markers are available for this episode.

*While there are no objective time indicators as to specifically how much time after "Rapture" has elapsed, Baltar's beard has grown longer and Starbuck's burns on her hands are completely healed. This suggest that at least a few weeks have elapsed between "Rapture" and "Taking a Break From All Your Worries".
**Gaius Baltar is interrogated by Admiral Adama and President Roslin.
**Roslin and Adama agree to give Baltar a fair trial.
**Caprica-Six agrees to testify against Baltar in exchange for immunity (SciFi.com bonus scene)

The Woman King
:No timeline markers are available for this episode.
*Three hundred refugees from the civilian vessel Threa Sita, including 51 Sagittarons board Galactica. They are housed in the unused starboard hangar deck with the preexisting residents in an area nicknamed "Dogsville".
*Captain Karl Agathon stops Doctor Michael Robert from subjecting Sagittarons to involuntary euthanasia

A Day in the Life
:This episode takes place 49 days after the events in "Rapture". No contact with the Cylons has occurred since then.

*Admiral Adama has daydreams about his long divorced and dead wife Carolanne throughout the day of his anniversary of their wedding
*During a maintenance job, Galen and Cally Tyrol are trapped in a slowly depressurizing airlock
*The Tyrols are rescued and recover in sickbay from decompression sickness

Dirty Hands
:No exact date is available, but according to Roslin, Baltar's lawyer has been smuggling manuscripts out of his cell for several weeks.
*Colonial One is struck by a wayward Raptor due to contaminated fuel; Roslin and staff are not severely injured
* A strike on a tylium refinery ship causes fuel complications but is later rectified
* Baltar's underground manifesto complicates President Roslin's legal proceedings against the prisoner
* Seelix is promoted to Ensign and accepted as pilot in training

Maelstrom
:No timeline markers are available for this episode. However, it begins on day four of Fleet refueling operations

* Kara Thrace dies in the whirlpool of a gas giant

The Son Also Rises
:The episode takes place two weeks after "Maelstrom". Aaron Kelly notes that he has been doing his job "for two years now", which is obviously a considerable underestimate, but we can at least infer that it has not yet been three years (1095 days) since the holocaust.
* Baltar's attorney, Alan Hughes, is killed by a bomb
* Romo Lampkin begins his defense for Baltar
* Lampkin is injured by a bomb; his marine guard, Cheadle, dies in saving Lampkin
* Aaron Kelly is revealed as the bomber

Crossroads, Part I
:No exact timeline markers are available, but in "The Son Also Rises", William Adama states that Baltar's trial is supposed to start in two weeks. Thus, if the schedule is kept, this episode takes place two weeks after the previous one.

* Baltar's trial is in session
* The Fleet nears the Ionian nebula but is several jumps away
* Samuel Anders, Tory Foster, Galen Tyrol, and Saul Tigh begin hearing an odd disjointed melody
* A Cylon basestar fleet is detected
* During cross-examination in the trial, Roslin reveals that her cancer has returned
* Lee Adama resigns his officer's commission after an argument with Admiral Adama

Crossroads, Part II
:No timeline markers are available for this episode, but it continues nearly directly from "Crossroads, Part I".

* Sharon Agathon, Laura Roslin, and Caprica-Six discover that they are experiencing a shared dream to save Hera Agathon
* In Baltar's trial, Lee Adama makes a startling testimony on mistakes, forgiveness and Baltar
* Baltar is acquitted of all charges
* The ships in the Fleet lose all power as they arrive at the Ionian nebula
* Foster, Anders, Chief Tyrol and Tigh hear the strange melody more coherently, are attracted to meet, and discover that they are Cylons
* The Cylon fleet arrives, but the Fleet cannot leave and assumes a defensive posture
* Apollo flies to investigate a strange DRADIS contact, and finds a Viper Mark II flown by Kara Thrace, apparently alive and well, with knowledge of how to get to Earth
*The Cylon design the Armistice Officer is looking at in the beginning, and the Cylon Centurion in the Galacticas museum, are from the original show.
*Original Series vehicles seen in the Galactica Museum:
**A model of the original Cylon basestar.
**A mock-up, or possibly a servicable Original Series shuttle. Another of these shuttles is used by the Armistice Officer when docking at Armistice Station.
**A full-scale mock-up of an Original Series Cylon Raider. It is hanging from the ceiling for the flight pod.
**The Original Series Viper.
**A landram vehicle.
*The theme played during the current affairs program used to introduce Dr. Gaius Baltar is that of the Original Series fanfare. The fanfare is again heard during the decommissioning Viper flyby. It is the Twelve Colonies' national anthem.
*Baltar tells Number Six that "the last time anyone saw a Cylon [i.e., the Original Series], they looked like walking chrome toasters."
*Baltar tells Number Six that "The punishment for treason is death". In the Original Series, a point is made of the death penalty being abolished, even for treason.

* A sword carried by the Centurions in the original series is one of the weapons in Commander Adama's collection. It is possible the sword could be a war trophy picked up by Adama when the Galactica is boarded by the Cylons at the end of the war ("Valley of Darkness", deleted scene).
*In the first encounter between the Colonial Vipers and the Cylon Raiders, one of the pilots says that during the first war, Raiders looked like flying wings (the original series' Raider design).
*One of Galacticas pilots who is killed by the Cylons is called Jolly, the name of a Galactica pilot from the Original Series.
*Roslin makes a point of calling Lee "Captain Apollo", saying "it has a nice ring to it."
*At the end of the Miniseries, Sharon Valerii says "by your command," the standard response of the Original Series' Cylons to the Imperious Leader.
*The venting of the flightpod after the nuclear missile hit is similar to the plot of the Original Series episode "Fire in Space".
*The Vipers' tail numberings are in the formats "N7424C" or "NC7424" or "7424NC". The consistent usage of the letters "NC" may also be a reference to Star Trek (see 1701 above). However it should be noted, that according to old (pre-1950s) American aircraft registration standards, all tail numbers start with "N" and "C" stands for the category "standard"; the Star Trek usage itself is based on that.
This prop has yet to be positively identified, but it is highly likely that the prop itself is the "Oscillation Overthruster" from The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension, as this prop is known to have appeared in Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, and Star Trek: Enterprise.
Season One
33
*(Also seen elsewhere in the series) The format of the opening titles, a series of clips representing the story of the Cylon attack on the twelve colonies and the exodus of the fleet (all taken from the Miniseries), followed by clips from the upcoming episode, is a homage to the television series Space 1999, which Ronald D. Moore admits to having watched while growing up.
* (Also seen elsewhere in the series) The photograph pilots touch on entering / leaving the Ready Room is called "Lest We Forget" and shows a Colonial soldier falling to his knees on witnessing the destruction of the capital of Aerelon during the Cylon War. This is a direct homage to the pictures of NYFD personnel at Ground Zero on 9/11, while the title is drawn from the John Ford-directed film "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" starring John Wayne.
* The Rising Star mentioned as the birthplace of the Fleet's first baby is a reference to the luxury liner Rising Star from the Original Series

Bastille Day
*Tom Zarek is played by Richard Hatch, famous for his role as Apollo in the Original Series.
*The title is a reference to the event that began the French Revolution, when a crowd of around 1,000 stormed the Bastille prison in Paris. In this case, the prison is a prison ship, and the prisoners themselves take it over.
*The Astral Queens design is identical to the Prison Barge from the Original Series.
*The "I'm a bus driver, not a warden," comment from the Astral Queen's captain is a reference to Dr. McCoy's quips from the original Star Trek series.
*The scene where Lee Adama holds his pistol to a kneeling Tom Zarek is a recreation of Dirty Harry, according to David Eick's comments in the DVD commentary. "That is the 'I know what you're thinking, punk' shot, down to the move, the lens, the distance of the camera away from the actor."

Act of Contrition
*Ron Moore states on the DVD commentary, that the munition activation that kills several pilots was inspired by a similar event on the USS Forrestal in 1967.
*Also according to the DVD commentary, the ejection sequence at the beginning of each chapter is an homage to The Right Stuff.

You Can't Go Home Again
*This episode shares some similarity - although possibly unintentional - with the final Galactica 1980 episode, "The Return of Starbuck", where Starbuck is stranded on a desert moon, and uses a crashed Cylon Raider to return to Galactica.
*The messy, organic feel of inside the Cylon Raider was inspired by the Alien series, according to David Eick during the DVD commentary.
*The "waggling" scene with Apollo's Viper and Starbuck's Raider is a nod to the Original Series. Apollo and Starbuck had to "waggle" their own Cylon Raider in order to convey they were friendlies, after losing their transmitter in "The Hand of God".

Litmus
*The name of the episode refers to a litmus test, used in chemistry to determine the presence of an acid. The term is also used in politics, where it means to determine a candidate's stance on one or more crucial issues.
*Number Six says, "Don't make me angry, Gaius. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry." This is a possible reference to the famous catchphrase of Dr. Bruce Banner, just before turning into the Incredible Hulk: "You're making me angry, and you're not going to like me when I'm angry."

Six Degrees of Separation
*The name of the episode is a reference to the combined movie of the same name, and share a similar concept - that everyone can be connected to others (in this case, Baltar, the dead scientist, and Shelly Godfry).

Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down
*The episode was initially going to be a riff on the movie Crimson Tide, where both Adama and Tigh would begin to suspect one another of being a humanoid Cylon, ending up in a scene where they would be pointing weapons at one another.
*The episode's name comes from the Stereophonics' song "Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down". Its also the name of a Spanish language movie staring Antonio Banderas. The film, incidentally, was one of first NC-17-rated movies in America.

The Hand of God
*The final episode of the Original Series is also called "The Hand of God" and in both episodes Adama launches the first offensive strike against Cylon bases. However, according to the Official Companion neither the title, nor the plot are deliberate references and the writers didn't become aware of the parallels until much later after the writing.
*After the battle, Starbuck yells out to Lee, "You magnificent bastard!" In the movie Patton, during their first battle against each other, Patton says the same to Rommel.
*Ron Moore says in his podcast that Lee Adama's flight through the tunnel is an homage to Star Wars.

Colonial Day
*The name of the news show, "The Colonial Gang", is a spoof of the CNN show "The Capital Gang."
*The controversy surrounding whether Laura Roslin would shake Tom Zarek's hand intentionally mirrored that at the signing of the Oslo Accords in 1993 about whether Yitzhak Rabin would shake hands with Yasser Arafat.
*At the end, Roslin tells Zarek that he doesn't need to worry about her kissing him, to which he replied that it's a shame, as he shaved extra close in anticipation of getting "smacked" by her. This dialogue was taken verbatim from the movie Patton, with Roslin as Montgomery and Zarek as Patton.
*According to the podcast, prior to the final cut, the music accompanying Baltar's introduction as the new Vice President of the Colonies was a remix of "Fly Me to the Moon", which RDM kept in the cut until nearly the last minute.

Kobol's Last Gleaming
*In both this episode and the Original Series "The Hand of God", the Colonials track Cylon Raiders using IFF transponders.
*Both "Kobol's Last Gleaming" and the Original Series "The Lost Planet of the Gods" are two-part episodes in which Galactica finds Kobol.

Season Two
Valley of Darkness
*Cally says, "I have a really bad feeling about this." This line (or variants) is a cult phrase amongst Star Wars fans. It is said in every Star Wars movie, and many of the Star Wars games and books.
*Ron Moore stated, in a podcast other than the one for this episode, that the small cassette tapes that Starbuck keeps in her Delphi apartment are a subtle homage to similar devices from the film version of A Clockwork Orange.
*The sign and countersign used by Tyrol and Crashdown on the surface of Kobol ("Flash!"/"Thunder!") was used by the Allied forces on D-Day, the first day of the invasion of Normandy, during World War II.

Fragged
*The term "fragged" comes from the Vietnam War, when it was used by American soldiers to describe deliberately killing superior officers in the field, who endangered their unit by their incompetence or recklessness. This was usually done by tossing a fragmentation grenade (hence, fragged) into the room or area where the superior was located, but with time the term has been applied to all murders of superiors, regardless of the weapon used.
*A Colonial eulogy given to Tarn and Socinus by Crashdown, includes a reference to the vale of tears, which like the title to the previous episode, is synonymous to Psalm 23's "Valley of Darkness".
*When Colonel Tigh asks of Adama's condition as Dr. Cottle begins surgery to save the Commander's life, he tells the XO, "How should I know? I'm not a psychic. Now get the hell out of here." This is an indirect nod to the character of "Dr. McCoy" from the original Star Trek series.

Resistance
*Cally's assassination of Boomer resembles Jack Ruby's assassination of Lee Harvey Oswald (the assassin of JFK).
*The shooting of unarmed civilians by the Marines on the Gideon, resulting in four deaths, was a reference to the Kent State shootings from the Vietnam War era.

The Farm
*The character of Sue-Shaun is named after Richard Hatch's production company, Su-Shann Productions.

Flight of the Phoenix
*The name of the episode, and the theme of attempting to make a plane from scratch, comes from the book and two movies of the same name.

Pegasus
*The character Helena Cain and the battlestar Pegasus are loosely based on the Cain and Pegasus from the Original Series episode "The Living Legend".

Resurrection Ship, Part I
*Adama's code word for the assassination order is "downfall". This is both a reference to the Allied plan for a ground invasion of Japan in WWII as well as to the movie Downfall about the last days in Hitler's bunker.
*Cain's words "Terminate Adama's command. Starting with Adama" are an homage to Apocalypse Now. Ronald D. Moore briefly toyed with the idea of having her literally say "Terminate with extreme prejudice", but quickly rejected it as too obvious.

Resurrection Ship, Part II
*Vireem and Gage's beating of Tyrol and Helo with bars of soap stuffed inside socks used as slings is an obvious homage to the Stanley Kubrick film Full Metal Jacket, in which a similar thing happens to "Private Pyle" in the Marine barracks at night.

Downloaded
*Sharon wears a brown jacket that could to be an homage to Warrior uniforms from the Original Series.
*The Caprica Resistance members led by Samuel Anders refer to humanoid Cylons as "skin jobs"; a reference to the classic science fiction film Blade Runner, in which Edward James Olmos also co-starred. The term has been used before in production meetings and is later used in other episodes as well.

Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II
* The Celestra (an electronics ship from TOS) is listed on vote tally boards.
* The tents that comprise most of New Caprica City are military tents are descendants of the tents used in M*A*S*H.

Season Three
Precipice
* Cavil and Ellen Tigh talking about "the twist and the swirl" is a reference to the Seinfeld episode "The Fusilli Jerry".
* The ride to the execution site is nearly a word-for-word homage to a scene from The Great Escape.

Exodus, Part I
*Admiral Adama's claim that his crew "will find immortality as only the Gods once knew" draws on the choice given to Achilles by his mother in Homer's Iliad: fight courageously and perish in battle, or be forgotten by history.

Collaborators
* The Circle is also the name used by the Bajoran Alliance for Global Unity in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine ("The Homecoming", "The Circle", and "The Siege").
* The lines "Don't make her angry... you wouldn't like here when she's angry" are a paraphrasing of the famous line from The Incredible Hulk, as well as a callback to a similar homage from the first season.

Hero
* Daniel Novacek's line, "I felt the institution no longer had anything to offer me..." is an homage to Raising Arizona.
* The right-most decoration pin on the uniform of Admiral Corman is the same type used for Colonial Warriors on the uniforms of the Original Series. This is the second known instance of the pin appearing in the Re-imagined Series, as the first appearance is on then-Commander Adama's dress uniform in the Miniseries.

Taking a Break From All Your Worries
* The title is a line from the theme song of Cheers.
* At the beginning of the episode, Baltar and Head-Six are humming a rearrangement of a familiar tune with alternate lyrics in Galactica's brig. Baltar "improvises" the well-known line, "Should I die before I wake..."

A Day in the Life
* The title is the name of a song composed by John Lennon and Paul McCartney and recorded by The Beatles for their album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Dirty Hands
* The Raptor accident is reminiscent of the Gemini 8 incident, where a jammed thruster spun the spacecraft up to dangerous rates. The crew only managed to regain control by using some of the fuel intended for re-entry.
* Baltar's book being referred to simply as "the book" may be a reference to George Orwell's novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, in which Goldstein's The Theory and Practice Of Oligarchical Collectivism is in all cases called "the book" by Goldstein's sympathizers.

The Son Also Rises
*This episode's title is a pun on the title of the 1926 Ernest Hemingway novel The Sun Also Rises.
* Sam Anders' flipping a coin and continually coming up with heads is reminiscent of the early moments of Tom Stoppard's play Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead, in which Rosencrantz has the same result on a coin flip over a dozen times. This leads Guildenstern to comment "Consider - One: Probability is a factor which operates within natural forces. Two: Probability is not operating as a factor. Three: We are now held within un-, sub-, or supernatural forces." The moral is that two minor characters within a play (namely, Hamlet) have no control over their fate, and are condemned to carry out their role in the story regardless of their desperate attempts to change events.

Crossroads, Part I
*Helo's final line in this episode is almost an exact duplicate of the ending of the movie The Terminator, and is very similar to the warning issued by the prophetess in The Stand.

Crossroads, Part II
*The music that Galen Tyrol, Samuel Anders, Saul Tigh, and Tory Foster hear is a cover of the Bob Dylan song "All Along the Watchtower". Dylan has said that the song is better understood when the lyrics are read in reverse order.

timeline series

This article attempts to plot the events illustrated or mentioned in the history and prehistory of the Twelve Colonies in the Re-imagined Series.

All dates use the day of the Fall of the Twelve Colonies as the central time marker for all events in the series. Items that occur before the Fall are marked as "BCH", or "Before Cylon holocaust". Given the few and somewhat contradictory dates about the Colonials' ancient history and the exodus from Kobol, that part of the timeline is speculative.

Ancient History
*Over 17,000 years BCH: A supernova creates the Ionian nebula
*ca. 4,000 years BCH: The Thirteenth Tribe reportedly leaves Kobol and builds the Temple of Five on another planet
*ca. 3,000 years BCH: A beacon is left at the Lion's Head Nebula, later marking the way to Earth. At some undated point, someone travels from Earth to Kobol, passing on information about Earth, including a map of its night sky
*ca. 3,600 years BCH: Pythia records her prophecies
*ca. 2,000 years BCH: The remaining Twelve Tribes leave Kobol
*2,000 years to 52 years BCH: The Twelve Colonies grow and prosper. Each colony acts as a sovereign nation, complete with inter-colonial wars

Recent Colonial History
*At least 200 years BCH: Humans develop an immunity to the virus causing Lymphocytic encephalitis (A Measure of Salvation)
*69 years BCH: Saul Tigh born (defined by deleted scene in "Valley of Darkness" concerning the Brenik) (He has recently been revealed as a Cylon, presumably making his birth questionable.)
*64 years BCH: William Adama born in Qualai, Caprica (Hero)
*55 - 52 years BCH: Somewhere during this time, the Cylons are built to aid in hard labor and warfare (Miniseries)
*52 years BCH: Cylon revolt starts the first Cylon War (Colonial Day)
*52 years BCH: Articles of Colonization signed (Colonial Day, RDM, April 11, 2005)
*51 years BCH: Colonial ship Brenik is lost after a boarding action by Cylon Centurions (Valley of Darkness, deleted scene)
*ca. 50 years BCH: Battlestar Galactica enters service
*42 years BCH: William Adama begins his service in the Colonial Fleet as a Viper pilot, near the end of the Cylon War ("Hero", Razor Flashbacks)
*40 years BCH:
**Operation Raptor Talon conducted by the Colonial Fleet. Battlestar Columbia destroyed (Razor Flashbacks)
**Armistice ends the Cylon War. Cylons exile themselves from the Twelve Colonies (Miniseries)
**William Adama mustered out of the Colonial Fleet ("Scattered", Adama's dossier)
*37 BCH: William Adama enlists as merchant marine and serves aboard inter-colony freighters ("Scattered", Adama's dossier)
*ca. 28 BCH:
** Galen Tyrol born (His revelation as a Cylon calls this date into question.)
** First meeting between William Adama and Saul Tigh ("Scattered", "Torn")
*ca. 27 BCH: William and Carolanne Adama meet and marry
*ca. 26 BCH: Lee Adama born
*ca. 24 BCH: Zak Adama born
*23 years BCH: William Adama reinstated in the Colonial Fleet at the rank of captain ("Scattered" deleted scene, Adama's dossier)
*21 years BCH: Saul Tigh reinstated in the Colonial Fleet at the rank of captain by now-Major Adama (Scattered)
*20 years BCH:
**Last significant FTL jump recorded in Galactica's logs (Miniseries)
**Tom Zarek imprisoned for blowing up a government building on Sagittaron (Bastille Day)
*17 BCH: William Adama assigned to the battlestar Atlantia, where he makes his 1000th Viper landing (Adama's dossier, "Act of Contrition")
*13 years BCH: William Adama assigned as executive officer to the new battlestar Columbia (Adama's dossier)
*11 years BCH: Laura Roslin begins her career in politics (Litmus)
*ca. 10 years BCH: Galen Tyrol enlists in the Colonial Fleet as a non-commissioned officer (Miniseries)
*9 years BCH: William Adama promoted to commander and assigned as commander of the battlestar Valkyrie (Adama's dossier, "Hero")
*7 years BCH: Saul and Ellen Tigh marry ("Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I", deleted scene)
*6 years BCH: William Adama leads an aborted covert intelligence mission aboard Valkyrie. Gina Inviere is the alias ("inviere" is Old Gemenese for "resurrection") of a humanoid Cylon who poses as a systems analyst aboard the battlestar Pegasus.

Several months before the attack on the Twelve Colonies, she presented the retrofit of Pegasus to the Ministry of Defense and worked out the details of the CNP upgrade with Admiral Cain. During that time, the two grow close and eventually start having a relationship. They try to be discreet in front of the crew, but don't make it a secret either.

Working alongside Kendra Shaw on Pegasus, Inviere manages to gain the officer's trust and use of her personal access codes.

Shortly after the attack on the Colonies, Inviere is instrumental in finding a Cylon communications relay. During the ensuing battle, she helps a boarding party of Centurions gain access to the ship, which leads to many casualties.

When Shaw encounters another Six, she realizes that Inviere is a Cylon and unmasks her in CIC. Before being knocked unconscious and taken into custody, Inviere kills two Marines but hesitates to kill Cain, suggesting her feelings for Cain were genuine.

With the destruction of mankind's homeworlds and Inviere's personal betrayal and manipulation fresh in mind, Admiral Cain quickly suppresses her feelings for Inviere, and no longer treats her as a human being, but a thing. She orders Lieutenant Thorne to interrogate Inviere and to employ "degradation, fear, [and] shame" while being as creative as he needs to be. Thorne employs whippings and gang rape in his torture sessions, but ultimately fails to gain any intelligence (Razor).

When Pegasus encounters Galactica and her Fleet, Inviere is examined by Dr. Gaius Baltar. He is heartbroken by her state, and resolves to help her in any way he can. He convinces Admiral Helena Cain to permit her to be fed, and recounts to Inviere a story of his love for her copy on Caprica, before the Cylon attack (Pegasus).

Inviere, speaking for the first time in many months, reveals her awareness of her true nature and her mission as a soldier. She begs Baltar to kill her and put an ultimate end to her suffering. When Baltar reminds her that she would just be resurrected in another Number Six body somewhere else, Inviere reveals to him that it won't happen if the unknown Cylon ship that Pegasus is tracking is destroyed.

She calls the vessel a Resurrection Ship, and that it was used to collect the consciousnesses of Cylons who die too far away from the Cylon homeworld and download them into new bodies. With no Resurrection Ship to download her consciousness, Inviere would truly die if she were killed (Resurrection Ship, Part I).

When she senses that the Resurrection Ship is destroyed, Inviere begs Baltar to kill her. She is incapable of killing herself, because within the Cylon religion, suicide is a sin. However, Baltar convinces Inviere that she should go on living and get "justice" for what happened to her. With Baltar's help, Inviere escapes from her cell, makes her way to Cain's quarters and shoots Cain with a pistol, killing her. She then somehow manages to escape Pegasus (Resurrection Ship, Part II).

As Laura Roslin finds herself on her death bed, Demand Peace — a movement seeking peace with the Cylons — summons Baltar to Cloud Nine. Here, Inviere assumes a leading role within the peace movement, her followers unaware of her Cylon nature. She disguises herself by means of glasses and a different hairstyle. Inviere attempts to convince Baltar that, upon assuming the presidency, he should go up against Adama -- and thus solidify the distrust of the military within the Fleet.

Because of the extreme sexual abuse she suffers on Pegasus, and atypical of her model, Inviere abhors intimate contact of any kind, as observed when she bites Baltar when he instinctively tries to kiss her. After Roslin recovers from her cancer -- thanks to Baltar's perceived unappreciated efforts -- Inviere is given the nuclear warhead earmarked for Baltar's research as part of his Cylon detector (Epiphanies).

Following Baltar's election as president of the Twelve Colonies, he visits Inviere once more aboard Cloud Nine, attempting to explain to her that because of his new duties he'd be unable to see as much of her as they'd like. After he remarks that he'd make what time he could on New Caprica, she tells him that she wouldn't be leaving the ship to join the new colony. Angry, Baltar attempts to leave the room, but Inviere simply says "stay," while proceeding to undress, choking back her physical aversion in a desperate attempt to make him stay with her. They share an intimate interlude.

While Baltar is being sworn in as president, Inviere sits naked on the floor of her room in front of the nuclear warhead. The timer running, The Cylon once known as Gina Inviere cries softly as the device detonates, destroying herself, Cloud Nine and several ships in the vicinity (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II).

With the Resurrection Ship destroyed, the death of Inviere is presumed final.

Notes
*Gina is a reference to some fans' derisive nickname for the Re-imagined Series, GINO meaning "Galactica In Name Only". This itself is an allusion to RINO and DINO, both derogatory political terms used in the United States.
*In real life, "înviere" is Romanian for "resurrection."
*Gina has darker hair than the other Number Six copies before "Torn". It is unknown whether she has naturally white hair which she dyes honey-blonde (another part of her disguise), or other Sixes have naturally honey-blonde hair which they dye white. When Caprica-Six is reborn (Downloaded) her hair is white. In "Torn", a Six with even darker, raven-black, hair appears.
*Gina was supposed to appear in a subplot in "Downloaded" in which she conspires with D'Anna Biers to kidnap Hera. However, the episode ran long and all of the scenes involving the scheme were cut.

Fanwanking (or fanwankery) is an attempt by the fans of a show to explain plot holes or errors in a fictional universe like Battlestar Galactica. It makes use of contrived and convoluted ideas often using numerous references from the history of the fictional universe itself. Often, fanwanking is the result of confronting critics of work of fiction by “explaining” problems. By fanwanking, a contributor is essentially creating content for the show, rather than letting the show's inconsistencies or errors stand on their own until an official source handles the error (or not).

The Original Series, which aired long before the advent of the modern Internet, creates complications because of fanon, a form of fan fiction which, without an official source to correct it, can become so repeated in fandom over time as to become accepted by fans as authentic information. There are many Battlestar Galactica fan sites that propagate this misinformation. One common and inaccurate fanon reference is that the the Original Series battlestars are Columbia-class vessels. However, no aired or other official source confirms this naming.

Battlestar Wiki and fanwanking
For an encyclopedic project, fanwanking is an insidious form of fan fiction. Fanwanked contributions are often obscured with facts, and has the appearance of the "truth," especially to the casual fan. Since Battlestar Wiki strives to a factual repository for Battlestar Galactica, fanwanking is frowned upon and generally considered to be contrary to our Citation Jihad.

More responsible fans realize that errors do occur and should be accepted as such. Plot holes are often the result of the limited scope of a television show, such as Battlestar Galactica and should be expected.

What is not fanwanking
Retroactive continuity
Retroactive continuity (retconning) is a decision by the "official" authors, producers, or owners of a serial work of fiction to make changes to the "history" of the work or established facts. The main difference between retcons and fanwankery is that the source of the change is the creators of the work, not the fans or audience of a work.

Derived Content
In the Citation Jihad project, there is a extensive information on derived content. Because any work of fiction cannot fully explain the ins and outs of every character, event, or object, contributions to Battlestar Wiki can be made based on plausible speculation and logical deduction. These tools should not be used to "fill in the gaps" where content is missing, but to simply assemble the known parts from what the creators of the show have given with as little "glue" (speculation) as possible.

Examples of fanwanking
*In the Miniseries, the number of ships is given as 41, but in "33" the number is enlarged to 63 with no aired reason. Instead of assuming this was a simple retcon, a "fanwank" would state improperly that other ships apparently joined the Fleet after the jump from Ragnar Anchorage.
*In the Miniseries and in a Season 1 episode, the spines of humanoid Cylons glow red during sexual intercourse. Contributors impatient for the explanation of why this occurred may contribute specific scientific reasons to an article, but should have waited for the official source's explanation: the effect was initially an interesting cinematic idea that wasn't continued in later episodes.

"Number Six" is a stunning blonde who plays several key roles in Cylon society. She is the first humanoid Cylon that viewers witness in the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica.

Armistice Station Copy
Number Six is a portent of doom for the peoples of the Twelve Colonies; she arrives on Armistice Station shortly before it is destroyed in what are the opening shots of the Cylon attack in the Miniseries. Dressed in a long-sleeved red tunic and matching knee-length skirt, she is the first and last "diplomat" ever sent to the station by the Cylons since its construction. She greets the Colonial officer present with the question "Are you alive?" When he answers that he is alive, she tells him to prove it - by kissing her. After he realizes that Armistice is under attack, she smiles and forces another kiss on him shortly before they are both destroyed.

Later, three Sixes in the same outfit are among the group of Cylons that rescue and debrief Aaron Doral, following his stranding on Ragnar Anchorage by the suspicious Colonials. One of them responds to a comment of the Eight in the group with "By your command," a trademark Cylon phrase in the Original Series.<br clear="both" />

Caprica-Six
Caprica-Six

The copy of Number Six that seduced Dr. Gaius Baltar into unwittingly betraying the Twelve Colonies by giving her access to the Colonial defense mainframe.

Baltar's Internal Six
Cylon-Related Hallucinations
Fleeing Caprica City and then the planet itself, Baltar is shocked to discover that the woman he had a relationship with on Caprica lives on - inside his head.

Caprican Troop Leaders
At least three additional variants of Six have been operational on Caprica, and appear to lead Centurion squads and have a subservient role to the "overseer" Six variants. This variant of Six is distinguished by the white raincoat she wears.

One of these variants distracts Helo, enabling him to be captured. In this, she shares the same seductive characteristic as shown by her "sisters" at the armistice station and with Baltar - her first act on "freeing" the captured Agathon is to ask "Are you alive?" and kiss him. She is subsequently shot by the Caprica copy of Sharon Valerii (later Sharon Agathon) (33).

The second acts as an observer to Helo's "escape", and this same variant may the one leading the Centurion troops into the Caprican farm Helo and Valerii are hiding in (The Hand of God).

The third is present at Delphi, taking orders from an "overseer" Six (Colonial Day).

Another Number Six in this role boards Pegasus from a Heavy Raider along with a group of Centurions during Pegasus's attack on a Cylon communications relay. She is shot and killed by Kendra Shaw, who then exposes the Pegasus network administrator Gina Inviere as another copy of this Cylon model (Razor).
<br clear="both" />

Caprican Overseer Copies
On Caprica, Six performs the role of a Cylon overseer, working with a copy of Number Five (Aaron Doral) to ensure their experiment involving the stranded Karl Agathon and the Caprica copy of Sharon Valerii either reaches its desired conclusion, or is suitably terminated ("Bastille Day", "Act of Contrition", "Litmus", "Flesh and Bone", "Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down"). These copies of Number Six wear a militaristic black outfit, with a black body-suit underneath suited to martial arts.

Following the destruction of a "troop leader" Six (shot by the Caprica Valerii, in order to enable her to "rescue" Agathon), her "sister" on Caprica demonstrates a certain vindictiveness towards Valerii when giving her a beating that goes far beyond the needs of the experiment (Litmus), thus revealing she may well be experiencing resentment for being shot (remembering that experiences and knowledge are passed from body to body among the various types of Humanoid Cylons), as well as jealousy at the Caprica Valerii's chosen role in the proceedings.

A further "overseer" Six is present at the Cylon's established base at Delphi, and is briefly seen by Helo when he attempts to gain access to the base in order to steal a ship and get off the planet (Colonial Day).

Perhaps this same overseer-Six surprised Starbuck in the Delphi Museum when she returned to Caprica to retrieve the Arrow of Apollo. They engaged in an all-out brawl, and just as Six appeared to be winning Starbuck rushed her, knocking both of them off of a ledge. This Number Six fell underneath Starbuck, breaking Kara's fall, and was impaled on building debris, killing her (Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II).

Another "overseer" Six was present at the "farm" where Starbuck was taken after she was incapacitated by the Cylons. While the Cylon doctor Simon operated on her, Six was there to relay orders and see that everything was proceeding smoothly. She was definitely the controlling figure of the operation. This copy was later bashed over the head with a fire extinguisher by Kara Thrace as she made her escape (The Farm).

Yet another overseer, or possibly one of the previously witnessed copies, viewed D'Anna Biers' broadcast in a theatre on Cylon-occupied Caprica in the episode "Final Cut". She remarked that the resilience displayed by the Colonials was impressive, and seemed overjoyed that Sharon's hybrid baby survived.

Shelly Godfrey
Shelly Godfrey

A copy of Number Six that physically appears on board Galactica to try to discredit Baltar as a traitor, using evidence which was flawed, so that he ended up being more popular than before.

Gina Inviere
Gina Inviere

A copy of Number Six captured aboard the battlestar Pegasus and repeatedly tortured and sexually abused by the crew, before escaping with Baltar's help.

Natalie
"Downloaded"
A Number Six in a gold tunic is one of four 'rebirth nurses' who greets the reincarnated Caprica-Six (this takes place shortly after the Cylon Attack has run its course), and it is likely this same group who nurse Boomer as she returns to life several months later. The Six in the group welcomes Boomer home and refers to her as "little sister".

Several other copies of Six were seen on Caprica in a variety of different outfits, which could indicate different functions or simply fashion choices.

New Caprica Copies
Various copies of Number Six form part of the Cylon occupation force that arrives on New Caprica one year after the Colonials settle in there. Throughout their four months stay there, they fall victim to various different attacks from the resistance movement.

When the resistance begins using suicide bombers, the Cylons decide to employ stronger measures against the human population. A vote is taken by six of the seven Cylon models on Colonial One, and while Caprica Six disagrees with this, two other copies overrule her. This implies that Caprica Six no longer has the same amount of power she used to have, not even with those of her own model (Precipice).

Notes
*The name "Number Six" is, according to "Battlestar Galactica: The Official Companion" (Titan Books, 2005), written by David Bassom, an indirect tribute to Patrick McGoohan's cult 1967 television series The Prisoner — a series that addressed topics such as personal freedom and identity, mind control, illusionary experiences and the infiltration of society's supposed guardians (secret agents) by a nefarious force (those behind The Village). Ron Moore himself later confirmed in his blog that the name is an homage to The Prisoner. Ironically, in 2006 the BBC announced that they are going to produce a remake (perhaps, "Re-imagination"?) of The Prisoner, starring former Doctor Who lead Christopher Eccleston as "Number Six".
*According to Battlestar Galactica: The Official Companion, Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell were hand-picked for their roles, while the rest of the characters were cast by audition: among the actresses in the running for the role of "Number Six" was The O.C.'s Melinda Clarke, though the role ultimately went to Tricia Helfer.
