==Overview==
A '''basestar''' (known interchangeably as a "baseship") is the most prominent example of the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylon]] military presence.

Basestars are approximately the same size as a Colonial [[Galactica type battlestar|battlestar]] but appear to be more technologically advanced.<ref>The official SciFi.com website indicates that basestars "dwarf" a battlestar. However, aired information in season 3, which shows ''Galactica'' and ''Pegasus'' in close proximity to a basestar, contradict SciFi.com's information.</ref> While basestars may have a somewhat longer "footprint" due to their "Y" shape, their mass is similar to most battlestars. They are equipped with a superior [[FTL|jump system]] and no visible means of sublight propulsion, lacking any engine pods or nacelles, but remain capable of chasing down a battlestar ([[Exodus, Part II]]).

Basestars operate a fleet of small fighters called [[Cylon Raider|Raiders]] and are capable of deploying hundreds of these simultaneously (see Related Imagery). The enormous amount of Raiders serve as a basestar's primary point-defense system.

Basestars possess several rooms and hallways, that are sleek but generally bland; Cylons [[Projection|project different environments]] to get around the ship more easily. Data and other functions such as analyzing photographs are handled in literal streams of water that go over a lit up computer glass surface. Cylons can [[Cylon data port|interface with the data by simply placing their hands in the basins]].

==Command and Control==
[[Image:Baseshipcontrolroom.jpg|thumb|right|Baseship control room. ([[Torn]])]]
A basestar is operated by many [[Cylon agent]]s. Up to [[Torn|all seven models]] of Cylon agents issue commands for the basestar from a central command and control center. Consensus is typically the normal procedure, although the process of deliberating and voting on decisions may cause the basestar to react more slowly than a battlestar's command and control in a [[CIC]].

A basestar's functions are managed by a partially-humanoid Cylon incorporated into the ship, known as a [[Hybrid]]. The Hybrid, for all respects of identity and control, ''is '' the basestar. The ship is an extension of her body and she is the ship's mind. The Hybrid, despite its humanoid appearance, is not a considered a fellow Cylon agent and lacks voting power as other agents have in Cylon affairs.

A basestar has a [[datastream]], or computer network, which interfaces with the Hybrid and all aspects of the basestar's operation.

==Armaments==

A basestar is capable of launching conventional or nuclear missiles from "turrets" mounted throughout the hubs and central axis that rotate to allow the basestar to fire in any direction<ref>Intelligence Debrief: Cylon Basestar, "Battlestar Galactica: The Official Magazine", June/July 2006, page 56.</ref>. Basestar-launched nuclear strikes against Colonial ships are usually carried out only before Raider deployment. One example of a Cylon nuclear attack involved three Cylon basestars that [[The Captain's Hand|ambush]] the battlestar ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]''. They open their attack firing several nuclear missiles before deploying Raiders and switching to a non-nuclear firing solution ([[The Captain's Hand]]).

A basestar's complement of Raiders is estimated as high as 792 fighters<ref>Intelligence Debrief: Cylon Basestar, "Battlestar Galactica: The Official Magazine", June/July 2006, page 56.</ref>, not counting fighters in repair or otherwise offline.

This tactic, along with the massive amounts of Raiders that a basestar can unleash, suggest a similarity with the ''[[Wikipedia:Arsenal ship|Arsenal ship]]'' concept to overwhelm and destroy a foe. It is probable that basestars used nuclear weapons to destroy the bulk of the [[Colonial Fleet]] (using their [[backdoor]] in the [[CNP]] to compromise their defenses first) in the opening wave of their [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies|destruction of the Colonies]].

After the Colonial commanders draw away their Raider wings, [[Battle of the Resurrection Ship|two basestars are torn apart]] by the kinetic guns of the battlestars ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]'' and ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]'' in a joint mission to destroy a Cylon [[Resurrection Ship]]. It would seem that that basestars rely heavily on their Raiders for close-range gun defense through sheer numbers of fighters. Since a basestar does not appear to have batteries (the primary offensive/defensive weapons on battlestars), nor any armoring<ref>Intelligence Debrief: Cylon Basestar, "Battlestar Galactica: The Official Magazine", June/July 2006, page 57.</ref>, basestars appear quite vulnerable to battlestars in close-range combat without Raider fighter support ([[Resurrection Ship, Part II]]).

== Encounters with the Colonial Fleet ==
[[Image:Basestar_above_armistice-station_-_00.04.06.jpg|thumb|left|A basestar above the [[Armistice Station]]]]
* As part of an annual offering of diplomacy, the [[Colonial Fleet]] staffs the [[Armistice Station]] in the hopes that the Cylons will attend, but it goes unfulfilled for forty years. Suddenly, without any warning or detection, a Cylon basestar arrives over the station, and dispatches a [[Cylon agent]] to the station. [[Number Six#Armistice Station Copy|This agent]] accosts the [[Armistice Officer]] as the basestar launches a salvo of missiles and obliterates the station.
<div style="clear: both;"></div>

[[Image:Basestarcaprica-00.56.10.jpg|thumb|right|Basestars over Caprica]]
*Days later, the Cylons begin their genocidal campaign against the Twelve Colonies. In all likelihood, several basestars and their support craft arrived at each Colonial world and deploy nuclear missiles, airbursting them to annihilate the populace. Several basestars orbit the ruined planet of [[Caprica]] as [[Sharon Valerii (Galactica copy)|Lt. Sharon "Boomer" Valerii]] guides her [[Raptor]] to an emergency landing on the planet during the attack. Boomer's Raptor guides by debris of destroyed Colonial units, including the shattered hulk of a battlestar ([[Miniseries]]).
<div style="clear: both;"></div>

[[Image:Basestar-ragnar-02.38.56.jpg|thumb|left|Two basestars over [[Ragnar]]]]
* A substantial Cylon force consisting of no less than two basestars and several hundred fighters and other small craft converge on [[Ragnar Anchorage]] in an attempt to flush out and destroy the fugitive ships led by the battlestar [[Galactica (RDM)|''Galactica'']]. After transferring as many armaments and supplies as possible from the munitions depot, ''Galactica'' departs the station's surrounding EM storm and presents itself as a shield, allowing [[The Fleet (RDM)|the Fleet]] to slip out and make [[FTL|jumps]] away. The entire contingent of civilian ships escape, as does ''Galactica'' after she and her [[Viper (RDM)|Vipers]] endure a [[Battle of Ragnar Anchorage|thorough pounding]] ([[Miniseries]]).
<div style="clear: both;"></div>

[[Image:Basestar-33-00.21.05.jpg|thumb|right|A basestar attacks ''Galactica''.]]
* Basestars pursue ''Galactica'' and the Colonial Fleet for five full days after the escape from Ragnar. ''Galactica'' spurs the Fleet to stay on the move, executing [[FTL|FTL jump after jump]], only to see the Cylons reappear at each location 33 minutes later ([[33]]). The Cylons had apparently infiltrated the ''[[Olympic Carrier]]'', a civilian starliner, and are able to track it through each successive [[FTL|jump]]. Following the 239th jump, the ''Olympic Carrier'' doesn't immediately rendevous at the jump coordinates, and it is feared the ship is lost. She reappears later, but several indications hint that she has been overtaken by Cylon forces, and the Colonials have no recourse but to destroy the liner. As soon as ''Galactica's'' [[Viper (RDM)|Vipers]] destroy the liner, the basestars arrive on the scene, and the Colonial Fleet executes their 240th jump. The Cylons do not immediately follow, ending the pursuit.
<div style="clear: both;"></div>

[[Image:Basestar_over_kobol_nuked_-_00.32.45.jpg|thumb|left|A basestar over [[Kobol]] is destroyed]]
* The Fleet eludes further contact with the Cylon forces for several weeks. The planet Kobol is discovered by a single Raptor on a probing reconnaissance mission, and a follow-up mission is planned. The reconnaissance team of three Raptors is surprised by a basestar now in orbit over Kobol, and screening Cylon Raiders obliterate one Raptor while shooting down another and forcing it to crash land on the planet below. The remaining Raptor escapes back to battlestar ''Galactica'', relaying the shocking news. [[William Adama|Commander Adama]] devises a plan to eliminate the basestar, using a Raptor fitted with a [[Cylon transponder]] to deploy a nuclear warhead inside. [[Sharon Valerii (Galactica copy)|Lt. Sharon "Boomer" Valerii]] is [[Arrow of Apollo|later tasked]] to the mission, accompanied by new ECO [[Margaret Edmondson|Lt. Margaret "Racetrack" Edmondson]]. En route, the transponder works exactly as planned. Despite their anxiety, the Raptor infiltrates the basestar. The interior view of the basestar that Boomer and Racetrack are afforded is overwhelming &ndash; a vast, cavernous void of bio-mechanical components lacking a distinctive floor or ceiling. Surfaces appear organic &ndash; fleshy if they were to be touched &ndash; resembling the interiors of a Raider. During the deployment of the nuclear warhead, Boomer exits the Raptor and removes her helmet, indicating that the interior space is indeed pressurized and oxygenated, more than likely controlled by ventricle-like airlocks evident during the Raptor's entrance. The pair extricate themselves from inside the basestar, and once outside, detonate the warhead. The annihilation of this basestar represents the first aired instance in the series that Colonial forces successfully destroy a basestar ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II]]).
<div style="clear: both;"></div>

[[Image:Basestar_-_scattered_-_00.31.44.jpg|thumb|right|''Galactica's'' Vipers on approach to a basestar.]]
* Scant moments after this victory, another basestar ambushes ''Galactica'', causing the crew to perform yet another immediate FTL jump. This haphazard jump (due to mishandled coordinate updates) separates the battlestar from the rest of the Fleet, and a few hours are spent developing a course of action. The decision is made to jump back to her previous location to recalculate the jump coordinates, and upon doing so, the battlestar and the basestar square off in a vicious engagement. During the recalculation, a Cylon [[Heavy Raider]] manages to crash-land on ''Galactica's'' starboard flight pod ([[Scattered]]). After the battlestar jumps away, the basestar too departs the area after sending a detachment of [[Cylon Centurion|Centurions]] to Kobol.
<div style="clear: both;"></div>

[[Image:TheEnemysGateIsDown.jpg|thumb|left|A basestar under attack by ''Galactica'' and ''Pegasus'']]
* Upon the reunion of the Colonial Fleet with the assumed-lost [[Mercury-class Battlestar|battlestar]] ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]'', Admiral [[Helena Cain]] reveals that a Cylon fleet, consisting of two basestars and a mysterious unknown ship, has been following ''Galactica'' ([[Pegasus (episode)|Pegasus]]). By way of a bold reconnaissance mission in the Colonial [[Blackbird]], the commanding officers discover the identity of the mysterious vessel to be the Cylon [[Resurrection Ship]] ([[Resurrection Ship, Part I]]). The Colonials concoct an aggressive, intricate plan using stealth, deception, and sheer brute force to [[Attack on the Resurrection Ship|eradicate]] the Resurrection Ship, as well as its escorting basestars. In a brilliant display of firepower, the two battlestars make short work of the two basestars, suffering minimal damage in return ([[Resurrection Ship, Part II]]).
<div style="clear: both;"></div>

* Over a month later, and now devoid of their Resurrection Ship, the Cylons deploy basestars in a new tactical fashion. Two Raptors from ''Pegasus'' are lured away from their reconnaissance training mission near a [[Wikipedia:Binary star system|binary star cluster]], the crews killed by carefully venting their crew compartments, and the Raptors set adrift. In his zeal to retrieve the Raptors, newly-promoted [[Barry Garner|Commander Barry Garner]] disregards both [[William Adama|Admiral Adama's]] orders and [[Lee Adama|Major Lee Adama's]] advice and takes ''Pegasus'' to the last known location of the missing craft. ''Pegasus'' deploys two more Raptors to scan the located Raptors. As the rescue Raptors discover the lost Raptors' fate, three basestars pounce upon the Colonials and immediately engage by launching salvos of nuclear missiles &mdash; the first time they've done so since the destruction of the Colonies. ''Pegasus'' reels under heavy damage, and only through the heroic self-sacrifice of Commander Garner, the sound direction of Major Adama, and the unwavering support of ''Pegasus's'' Vipers (led by [[Kara Thrace|Captain "Starbuck" Thrace]]) the battlestar survives. As a means of buying time until the disabled FTL drive was repaired, Major Adama directs the battlestar's forward gun batteries to barrage the closest basestar, focusing on the core of it until it is forced to withdraw. ''Pegasus'' indeed survives [[Battle of the Binary Star System|this encounter]], albeit with a substantial amount of damage, but it heralds a less brashly aggressive, more subversively calculative approach by the Cylons ([[The Captain's Hand]]).

[[Image:Baseshipcloseup305.jpg|thumb|right|Baltar's baseship]]
* The next appearance of basestars comes at the [[Fall of New Caprica|fall of New Caprica]] to Cylon occupation. Several, approximately six or seven, basestars emerge from the planet's shrouding nebula, and in the face of overwhelming strength and numbers, an understaffed Colonial Fleet makes a reluctant jump away, and the Cylons take the planet without firing a shot. The Cylons then task at least two basestars with guarding the surrounding space of the planet.

*Four months later during the [[Battle of New Caprica]], ''Galactica'' launches its rescue operation of the humans of New Caprica, two basestars move to combat it without any fighter support as the raiders are otherwise occupied. Soon two more basestars jump and move to engage bringing the total to four. Before long, ''Galactica's'' FTL drives and maneuvering thrusters are disabled, and the port side of the ship reaches its structural limits. Battlestar ''Pegasus'' then arrives with its forward batteries blazing, scoring several hits that destroy one basestar. Commander Lee Adama orders his battlestar towards the basestars to give Galactica time to repair its FTL drive and escape. Later with ''Pegasus'' taking phenomenal damage, Commander Adama orders all hands to abandon ship, using standby Raptors to jump away from the battle. He ensures that the weapons are set to autofire and that the ship is on a collision course with one of the basestars before departing. The damaged, unmanned ''Pegasus'' collides into one basestar, destroying both. The remnants of ''Pegasus’s'' starboard flight pod collide with another of the remaining basestars, destroying it ([[Exodus, Part II]]).

[[Image:SickBase.jpg|thumb|left|The infected basestar]]

*A basestar is disabled and presumed dead after it encounters a beacon left near a nebula that marked the way to [[Earth]]. The probe apparently contained a pathogen that infects and kills Cylons of all kinds, be it Raider, Centurion, or agent. The [[Resurrection Ship]] is ordered to jump away from the area and thus resulting in the permanent deaths of the ship's contingent of biological Cylons. It later presumably self-destructs soon after the ''Galactica'' investigation team leaves ([[Torn]]).
<div style="clear: both;"></div>

==Casualties==

By the end of "[[Exodus, Part II]]," a total of five basestars are confirmed as destroyed by Colonial forces.
*"[[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II]]" - 1
*"[[Resurrection Ship, Part II]]" - 1
*"[[Exodus, Part II]]" - 3

One basestar was heavily damaged and possibly destroyed in "Resurrection Ship, Part II," and another in "The Captain's Hand."

A further basestar self-destructed or succumbed to [[Lymphocytic encephalitis|a virus]] and is destroyed in "[[A Measure of Salvation]]".

==Notes==
[[Image:Basestarinmuseum.jpg|thumb|right|A model of a [[Cylon War]]-era Cylon [[Basestar (TOS)|basestar]] on display in the defunct museum.]]
*In the [[Miniseries]], ''Galactica'''s new museum displays a model of the Cylon basestar used in the [[Cylon War]]. As it happens, this design is identical to the basestars seen in the [[Battlestar Galactica (TOS)|Original Series]]. However, despite the identical use of the ship design, the universe of the Re-imagined Series does not use the same weapons as that of the Original Series, so viewers are left to ponder what armed the Re-imagined incarnations of the Original Series Cylon warships. The museum also displays a deactivated [[Cylon Centurion Model 0005]]--again, the same design of Cylon warrior as used in the Original Series, and indicated in the episodes as the Cylons seen in the Cylon War of the Re-imagined Series continuity.
*Beginning with the episode "[[Collaborators]]", a new exterior design [http://media.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Image:Change.jpg] was implemented for the basestars, bearing a sharper, more mechanical look then they previously had. This was apparently an upgrade by the VFX crew to make the exterior mirror more the interior design, which we saw for the first time in that episode.
'''Louanne "Kat" Katraine''' was the assumed name of a young woman named Sasha, a drug runner on [[The Twelve Colonies#Caprica|Caprica]] with flying experience ([[The Passage]]). She is selected as a candidate pilot ("[[nugget]]") for [[Viper (RDM)|Viper]] training under the command of Lieutenant [[Kara Thrace|Kara "Starbuck" Thrace]] ([[Act of Contrition]]). While she is a new pilot, she has a taste for fighting, and is often on the front lines when ''[[Galactica]]'' engages [[Cylon]] forces. She becomes ''Galactica''&#39; [[CAG]] during the colonization and occupation period of [[New Caprica]].

Katraine later dies after receiving cumulativly fatal radiation exposure while escorting civilian ships through a star cluster to a planet with a food source ([[The Passage]]).

== Biography ==

Katraine's real name is actually Sasha. She took the name "Louanne Katraine" from a girl who died two days before [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies|the attack]]. She was a drug runner on [[Caprica]] working for a person named [[Enzo]] ([[The Passage]]).

Katraine is selected from relative obscurity to become one of [[Galactica|''Galactica'''s]] first intake of trainee pilots after 13 experienced pilots were killed in a freak accident ([[Act of Contrition]]).

Described as a "boonie jumper", Katraine is placed under the instruction of [[Kara Thrace]], alongside nugget pilots [[Brendan Constanza]] and [[Perry]], with whom she forms a friendship.

Thrown in at the deep end - flying [[Viper (RDM)|Vipers]] on their very first day of training, none of the nuggets perform particularly well - Kat in particular fails to make a [[Combat landing|combat landing]] on ''Galactica''. Thrace washes out the entire group of candidates until Commander [[William Adama]] later forces Thrace to reinstate them.

Katraine's training continues until she is selected to fly with [[Lee Adama]] during a raid to secure a [[tylium]] mine from the Cylons ([[The Hand of God (RDM)|The Hand of God]]). Her fellow nuggets [[Perry]] and [[Stepchild]] are killed in this action, but she and [[Brendan Constanza|Hot Dog]] survive and are greeted as heroes on their return to ''Galactica''.

Kat participates in the defense of ''Galactica'' when the battlestar becomes separated from [[The Fleet (RDM)|the Fleet]], and has to face down a Cylon [[Basestar (RDM)|basestar]] in order to relocate it ([[Scattered]]).

After Lee Adama's defection to the [[Laura Roslin faction]], his replacement, the newly promoted Captain [[George Birch]] negligently endangers Katraine during a training exercise. She is almost killed when Birch incorrectly directs her to attack an asteroid target as [[Brendan Constanza|Hot Dog]] fires a missile at the target. Katraine's improving piloting skills save her from a dangerous collision with debris ([[Home, Part I]]).

Kat is later promoted from cadet to the rank of Lieutenant. She becomes increasingly exhausted with the mounting pressures of service in the Fleet with long hours, constant danger, and no possiblity of reinforcement. While trying to combat her fatigue, Kat becomes dependent on [[stims]], of which the effects of their overuse make her emotionally unstable. She "moons" a documentary crew for her "buddies" on [[Freighter 212]], berates Chief [[Galen Tyrol|Tyrol]] for mechanical failures that are beyond his control, and later crashes her Viper into the [[landing bay]], totalling the vehicle ([[Final Cut]], [[Flight of the Phoenix]]). She is pulled from flight status for some time, but is reinstated by the time that the advanced battlestar ''Pegasus'' joins the Fleet , when she flies wingman to [[Lee Adama|Apollo]] on [[CAP]] when first contact is made with ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]''.

In the wake of Admiral Cain's integration of ''Galactica'' and ''Pegasus''' officers, Kat appears to have been made the acting-CAG of ''Galactica'' flight team. With Starbuck and Apollo both transferred to ''Pegasus'' and the failure of Cpt. [[George Birch]] as [[CAG]] during Lee Adama's absence, Katraine appears to be the most likely choice to fill the command vacuum. She is flight leader of the Viper wing that stands off against the ''Pegasus'' Vipers. In spite of making repeated requests for firing clearance, she manages to keep the situation from degenerating into a fire fight, and avoids several collision attempts in the fighters' deadly "chicken" game, each attempting to force the other side to fire first ([[Resurrection Ship, Part I]]).

On day 189 of the human exodus, Kat is assigned CAP with [[Kara Thrace|Starbuck]]. Kat's maturity and past insensitivity show growth when Starbuck orders her to stop her small talk about Starbuck's off-hours behavior, which Kat does so without skipping a beat and returns to business by requesting permission to do a weapons check. As Kat test-fires her Viper's guns, an ammo misfire destroys Kat's port gun and sends debris at Starbuck's Viper, cracking her cockpit window. The two declare an emergency and safely return to ''Galactica.'' The cause of the malfunction was soon determined to be sabotage later blamed on a civilian ammunition worker that is part of the "[[Demand Peace]]" movement ([[Epiphanies]]).

Katraine is more than personally upset with Starbuck's apparent behavior issues and doesn't really care. While Kat obviously admires Kara Thrace, she tires quickly of Starbuck's drinking and bragging, which is affecting her work, and in turn affecting the pilots, especially the [[nugget]]s. Fed up with Starbuck's lording over the "Top Gun" beer stein as well as the rampaging Raider ace known as "[[Scar (Raider)|Scar]]," Kat makes a bet with Starbuck on who will destroy the morale-sucking Raider first.

Kat manages pilot combat reviews, having become a highly skilled tactical pilot herself. She grimaces at Starbuck's inefficiencies and chimes in often to correct or chide Starbuck, much to Thrace's chagrin. Things come to a head in their rivalry when Kat openly criticizes Starbuck for substituting [[Jo-Jo]] for patrol rather than flying herself (she awoke that morning hungover and unable to fly). Jo-Jo and his wingman are both killed, and Kat is incensed. But instead of Starbuck delivering the first punch, it's Kat that delivers it. Their fight is interrupted by Captain [[Lee Adama|Adama]], who orders them on patrol near the [[Big Spud]]. Kat and Starbuck find Scar, and Starbuck's Viper is damaged in a near-successful ambush. The consummate wingman, Kat continually speaks to Starbuck to get a bearing, although Starbuck resists out of pride rather than working jointly to destroy Scar. When Starbuck realizes that because of [[Samuel Anders]] she doesn't want to die in order to take Scar with her, she guides Kat in to her position, where Kat delivers the killing blow to Scar.

Kat chides Starbuck once more in the pilot's recreation room as she holds the Top Gun mug. Starbuck pours champagne in the mug and tells Kat, "You've earned it." Kat's slight smile in response is not only that of smugness, but also that of honor - for Starbuck to tell her that she was (at least for the time being) the best - is pleasing as a master would compliment a student ([[Scar]]). Kat's smugness is short-lived, as Starbuck offers a toast to all the pilots who died during their flight from the colonies. Overwhelmed with the memory of lost comrades, Kat nearly bursts into tears.

By the time of the Cylon invasion of [[New Caprica]], with Lee Adama in command of ''Pegasus'' and Kara Thrace having left the fleet and settled planetside, Katraine has been promoted to ''Galactica'''s [[CAG]] ([[Exodus, Part I]]). During the [[Battle of New Caprica]], she leads a group of Vipers escorting decoy [[Raptor]]s, and presumably assists in the defense of ''Galactica'' in the following space battle ([[Exodus, Part II]]). Following the destruction of ''Pegasus'', Lee Adama returns to ''Galactica'' and replaces Katraine as the CAG, who in turn becomes the leader of [[Blue Squadron (RDM)|Blue Squadron]] ([[Torn]]).

[[Image:Season 3 - Promo - The Passage - Kat.jpg|thumb|left|One of Kat's final moments ([[The Passage]]).]]
During a food shortage throughout the fleet, ''Galactica'''s pilots are tasked with safely guiding the civilian ships through a highly radioactive star cluster to a food source on the other side. During this time Katraine encounteres [[Enzo]], who survived the attack and calls her by her real name, Sasha. Enzo confronts Katraine and threatens to reveal Kat's past to others unless she helps him. Thrace observes the argument and later confronts Enzo about it, who in turn reveals Katraine's secret to Thrace. Katraine confirms it to Thrace, who is angered over the secret, even suggesting that Kat could have possibly unknowingly aiding the Cylons in their infiltration of Caprica. Katraine begs Thrace not to tell Admiral Adama, saying that she wants to tell him herself.

Before the final trip through the passage, Katraine, who had already received a deadly dose of radiation on earlier trips, switches radiation badges with Helo. During the final trip, she loses track of the ''[[Fanu Sadin]]'', but remains in the passage until she finds the vessel and joins the rest of the Fleet on the other side. Upon landing, Katraine is celebrated as a hero, but then succumbs to radiation poisoning, collapsing on the flight deck.

On her deathbed, Katraine receives an apology from Thrace, as well as an overdose of sleeping pills that would allow her to pass away painlessly. Admiral Adama also visits Katraine, giving her an honorary promotion to CAG, and then tells her how the situation reminds him of when his son, [[Zak Adama|Zak]], was born. Kat tries telling him about her past, but he cuts her off saying it doesn't matter. After Katraine's death, Thrace places a photo of her on the wall of rememberance, and Admiral Adama makes her posthumous promotion official by switching her name on the pilot roster with Lee Adama's ([[The Passage]]).

==Notes==
*Katraine's assumed first name, Louanne, was revealed in the episode "[[Final Cut]]" during her inteview with [[D'anna Biers]].
*It was initially assumed that some of Kat's family may have survived the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies]], as implied when Kat shouted "Hi, Mom!" while waving into the camera in "[[Final Cut]]". However, given what was revealed in "[[The Passage]]", it may have been ficticious.
*In the DVD commentary for "[[Act of Contrition]]", David Eick and Ron D. Moore elaborate on the increased role of the nugget pilots as the series progressed:

:Eick: This young actress playing Kat has proven to be--and there's Bodie Olmos, Eddie's son, in the center there who's Hot Dog, he's also become a recurring character.
:RDM: Well those three in the front, [[Chuckles]], [[Hot Dog]], and Kat, they all became "pilots" to us. And I don't think we really had any expectation of that. The idea was we were going to do "the nuggets", "the new pilots", was just going to be its own kind of story, and ''maybe'' you might see one of these guys again later. And what started happening is the writers just started putting them in, like almost every scene that we dealt with the pilots (of Galactica) so these ''became'' our "recognizable faces".
:Eick: Kat is quite fine. She's someone we're now talking about, and have already, built into a much more prominent character. She's just a really, really talented actor, and she's someone who in a very different way than Katee (Starbuck), just exemplifies that sort of masculine fortitude, despite being a woman, that is required to be a pilot like this. In one of the upcoming episodes ([[Scar]]), we're actually going to deal with the tension between Kara Thrace and Kat.
:RDM: Yeah, what happens when your protege starts outdistancing you. What happens when you train this young pilot, and it's great that she's a hot shot and all that, and then wait a minute, what if she starts being better than you?
'''Sharon "Athena" Agathon''' is a copy of the Cylon human model [[Number Eight]] who is first encountered by [[Karl Agathon|Karl "Helo" Agathon]], when he is stranded on [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Caprica|Caprica]]. She is initially assigned to seduce him by impersonating Lt. [[Sharon Valerii]], as part of a Cylon cross-breeding experiment, but later turns against her people and helps him escape the planet; pregnant with his child during that time. Helo, first shocked by her true nature, ultimately accepts her as the mother of his child and declares his love for her.

Once on ''Galactica'', she is imprisoned and long seen as a mere object. She frequently provides intelligence, but is severely mistreated by an interrogator from ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]'' who beats and sexually assaults her. Over time, she earns [[William Adama|Admiral Adama's]] trust by helping the [[Colonial Fleet]] escape peril several times and she is eventually appointed as an officer of the Colonial Fleet. Agathon gives birth on ''Galactica'', but her child [[Hera]] is subsequently hidden from her and she believes Hera to be dead. She is married to Karl Agathon.

== Biography ==
=== Cylon cross-breeding experiment ===
This [[Number Eight]] is first seen on [[Caprica]], as the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylons]] decide to use her in an elaborate experiment focused around [[Karl Agathon|Karl "Helo" Agathon]] who is stranded on the planet after he gave up his seat on his and [[Sharon Valerii|Boomer's]] [[Raptor]] on the day of the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies]]. The Cylons intend to use this Eight who is an identical copy of Helo's friend and colleague [[Sharon Valerii|Sharon "Boomer" Valerii]], to examine the possibilities of Cylon-human procreation. This second Valerii appears to Helo to rescues him after he is captured by a [[Number Six|Six]] and [[Cylon Centurion|Cylon Centurions]]. Unaware that Cylons have developed human models, Helo believes her to be the "Boomer" he knows from ''Galactica'', returning to rescue him. Following this rescue, Valerii leads Helo to "her" Raptor, now surrounded by several Cylon Centurions, convincing him that they have no direct way off of the planet. Copies of [[Aaron Doral]] and [[Number Six]] oversee the experiment ([[Water]]).

After receiving a "Colonial signal" on a radio receiver they carry, Valerii leads Helo to a city where they find a fully-equipped "fallout shelter" in which two people can live in reasonable security, hidden from above-ground Cylon operations, and with sufficient supplies to last a considerable period of time ([[Act of Contrition]]). The purpose in establishing this "nest" is to elicit an emotional response in Helo towards Valerii. When this fails, as Helo continues to seek a way off Caprica, the Cylons arrange for Valerii to be "captured", concluding that if Helo does not seek to rescue her, the experiment has failed, and he must be killed ([[You Can't Go Home Again]]).

Helo does indeed "rescue" Valerii. Helo has always been fond of Valerii; his long-time affection for her (stilled by "her" relationship with [[Galen Tyrol]]) arises within him from the dramatic rescue, which leads to Helo and Valerii having sex ([[Six Degrees of Separation]]). Valerii later reports this achievement to Doral and Six. A new hideout, a cabin in the woods, is being constructed for Helo and Valerii. She is instructed to lead him there and have him stay with her - or kill him if he attempts to leave ([[Flesh and Bone]]). But Valerii's human emotions begin to question the Cylon's overall goal. Realizing that she has herself fallen in love with Helo, Valerii disobeys her instructions and attempts to lead Helo to [[Delphi]], where they hope to steal a vehicle and get off the planet ([[Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down]]). On the way to the spaceport, Valerii shows signs of being pregnant: she succumbs to a bout of morning sickness ([[The Hand of God (RDM)|The Hand of God]]) and develops a ravenous appetite ([[Colonial Day]]).

=== Helo's discovery ===
[[Image:Boomerhelokara.jpg|235px|left|Helo attempts to stop Kara from shooting Sharon, in the Delphi Museum.|thumb]]
On reaching Delphi, Valerii and Helo break into the Cylon facilities to reach the spaceport. When Helo encounters yet another copy of Valerii, he draws the initial conclusion that she is a human clone created by the Cylons, and goes on the run alone ([[Colonial Day]]). When Valerii catches up with him, her emotional condition is so confused that she challenges him to shoot her ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I]]). Helo can only bring himself to wound her, and takes her with him to use her to somehow get off Caprica. While Helo keeps her at gunpoint, Valerii leads him to the [[Delphi Museum]]. Waiting out a storm in a nearby ruined building, Valerii tells Helo that her love for him is real and that she is pregnant with his child.

When she and Helo come across [[Kara Thrace|Starbuck]], who lands near the museum to retrieve the [[Arrow of Apollo]], Thrace realizes on-sight that this Valerii is a Cylon (having left [[Sharon Valerii (Galactica copy)|"Boomer" Valerii]] behind with the [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]]) and attempts to shoot her. Helo stops Thrace and reveals to her that Valerii is pregnant ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II]]). Starbuck, like Helo, also wrongly concludes that Caprica-Valerii must be a Cylon copy of the "real" Sharon Valerii on ''Galactica''. Valerii tries to convince her that she and "Boomer" Valerii are both Cylons but also just as "real" as the other. Valerii attempts to prove this by recollecting the first time she and Starbuck met, to no avail.

=== Resistance movement and arrival at the Fleet ===

While Thrace and Helo argue over Valerii, the confused and frightened Cylon escapes in Thrace's Cylon Raider to save herself and the life of her unborn child ([[Scattered]]). After tracking them for several days, Valerii returns to Helo and a human [[Caprica Resistance|resistance movement]] that had formed on Caprica. She offers her aid in finding the missing Thrace ([[The Farm]]). After Thrace escapes to the outside of the hospital where she was imprisoned, Valerii arrives at the rescue scene in a stolen [[Heavy Raider]] and destroys several Centurions that attack the Resistance rescue party. Convinced that Helo's Valerii copy can be sufficiently trusted, or at least give useful information on Cylon activity, the humans allow Valerii to accompany them as they fly the Heavy Raider back to [[The Fleet (RDM)|the Fleet]].

When Valerii walks aboard the ''[[Astral Queen]]'', [[Lee Adama]] reacts violently. The son of Commander [[William Adama|Adama]] (shot by the sleeper Cylon agent "Boomer" Valerii) grabs this second Valerii and places his gun to her head. Helo draws his sidearm against Adama, forcing a standoff, but President Roslin urges both men enough to withdraw their weapons, and orders Valerii to be ejected out the airlock. Valerii pleads for her life, telling Roslin she knows the precise location of the [[Laura Roslin faction|faction's]] objective: The [[Tomb of Athena]]. Roslin reconsiders and places Valerii in the brig. Roslin later confirms that the Cylon is actually cooperating out of a maternal instinct to protect her lover and child. <!-- working on their side because Valerii wants her child and Helo to remain safe from what Roslin interprets as a mothering instinct.-->

=== Guide on Kobol ===
[[image:sharonhome.jpg|235px|Sharon on Kobol, with Helo, Elosha, and Roslin.|thumb]]
Valerii accompanies Roslin's party to [[Kobol]]. Valerii recites the specific passages of the Tomb in the scriptures of the [[Sacred Scrolls]] and plots the group's path along a ridge nearby. As priestess [[Elosha]] examines a gravestone marker along the ancient trail, the handcuffed Valerii senses danger but is too late to warn anyone; two "[[Wikipedia:S-mine|Bouncing Betty]]"-style antipersonnel mines detonate, killing Elosha. At the same instant, a group of Centurions open fire. As others hide or return fire, Valerii vaults away, with Lee Adama in pursuit, believing she is trying to escape. Valerii scoops up a grenade launcher lying ahead, and just as Lee Adama thinks she is about to shoot him, she aims for the last Centurion and destroys it ([[Home, Part I]]). At camp, Adama and Thrace are perplexed that Helo still loves Valerii, despite his awareness of her true nature as a Cylon.

During the trek, Valerii casually tells Helo that their child is a girl. Not long after, Commander Adama's search party arrives at Roslin's camp. The warm reunion of the two leaders and family is interrupted when Adama sees this second copy of Sharon Valerii. Reacting as his son did, Commander Adama immediately tries to choke her to death. He releases her after experiencing terrible chest pains (probably the result of his recent surgery, or from anxiety), as she says "And you asked 'why'?" (mysteriously referencing what Commander Adama said over the dead body of "Boomer" Valerii).

[[Tom Zarek]]'s follower, [[Meier]], tries to convince Valerii to help him kill both Adamas as part of a power play by Zarek. Valerii believed her ''Galactica'' counterpart was being held in the [[brig]], but Meier informs her that she was killed. She expresses her outrage to Helo that [[Cally]] killed Boomer, receiving only a minor punishment. Valerii deduces that the Colonials don't see humanoid Cylons are people; she is a thing they may destroy once they no longer need her. Valerii appears to take up Meier's proposal to kill Commander Adama and Lee Adama, but after they all draw their weapons, she shoots Meier instead, saving the lives of both Adamas. She announces to Commander Adama that she is not the same Sharon Valerii that shot him, and that she is not a sleeper agent with hidden protocols waiting to activate; she makes her own choices. She surrenders the weapon to Commander Adama, to everyone's surprise.

=== Cooperation with the human fleet ===
[[Image:Valerii_virus.jpg|thumb|170px|left|Valerii in trance while disabling the Cylon logic bomb.]]
Subsequently, Valerii is brought aboard battlestar ''[[Galactica]]'' and imprisoned in a new reinforced cell designed to incarcerate "Boomer." The virtual [[Number Six]] tells Dr. Baltar that Valerii's baby will be born in that cell. Number Six considers Valerii's and Helo's biological child to be hers; she says that she will be its "mother" and Baltar will be its "father" ([[Home, Part II]]).

While in her cell, Valerii nearly has a miscarriage, and is rushed to [[Sickbay]] where Dr. [[Cottle]] succeeds in saving the fetus. [[D'anna Biers]], a reporter for the [[Fleet News Service]], stumbles upon Valerii while filming her documentary in Sickbay. Biers threatens to expose that Commander Adama is harboring a Cylon aboard ''Galactica'', but he confiscates what he believed was Biers' tape of Valerii. In reality, Biers secretly switches tapes and keeps the real one. This critical information was not broadcast in the final cut of her documentary distributed to the Fleet, but it was broadcast back to other Cylons on Caprica (by way of two Raiders that attack ''Galactica'' in order to get within transmission range). The Cylons on Caprica (including another copy of Biers and yet another Valerii copy) are surprised yet overjoyed that Helo's Valerii is still alive (they are apparently unaware that she had survived). They are incredibly concerned that her hybrid child survives, saying that it must be protected at all costs ([[Final Cut]]).

When ''Galactica'' experiences mysterious computer failures and system malfunctions from a mutated version of a Cylon virus [[Valley of Darkness|thought eradicated]], Commander Adama orders Helo to show the incarcerated Valerii the strange Cylon code. Valerii identifies it as a very virulent [[Logic bomb]] that will take control of the ship and kill off the crew without her help. Reluctantly, on advice from President Roslin, Commander Adama brings Valerii to [[CIC]], where Valerii cuts her arm open and connects her body to a fiber optic line to communicate with ''Galactica's'' mainframe [[Computers|computer]] and communication channels. With Valerii now with access, she takes into her a portion of the logic bomb code, then instructs Lieutenant [[Felix Gaeta|Gaeta]] to wipe the hard drives of the system computers to erase all Cylon virus traces for good. ''Galactica'' is a sitting duck to a massive Cylon fighter force on the outskirts of [[DRADIS]] range while Valerii makes adjustments to the code. She resends the code out on the communication channels to the Cylons, disabling the entire fleet of Cylon fighters. ([[Flight of the Phoenix]]).

=== Interrogation and abuse ===
[[image:Pegasus-Thorne_Boomer.jpg|235px|Valerii is beaten and sexually assaulted during an interrogation by Lt. [[Alistair Thorne|Thorne]].|thumb]]
After ''Galactica'' reunites with battlestar ''Pegasus'', Admiral [[Helena Cain]] sends Lieutenant [[Alistair Thorne]] to inspect the incarcerated Valerii. He beats and sexually assaults her while his guards watch and hold her. Fortunately for Valerii, both Helo and Tyrol find out about Thorne and what was done to his previous [[Gina|prisoner]] and arrive in time to stop him. Tyrol accidentally kills Thorne in the process. Both he and Helo are arrested by the ''Pegasus'' guards and taken to Cain's battlestar, where Cain hastily convenes courts-martial for the men (without Adama's knowledge) and sentences Agathon and Tyrol to death.

Commander Adama sends a [[Marines|Marine]] force and his Viper squadrons out to retrieve his men. Valerii and all of the fleet await news on the survival of her "past" and current love as a military standoff between the battlestars begins ([[Pegasus (episode)|Pegasus]]). Valerii's attempted rape by Thorne results in a hairline fracture in one of her ribs and minor bruising. Still in shock for the incident, Commander Adama (who has reached a détenté with Admiral Cain over Helo's execution) personally appologizes to Valerii over the incident ([[Resurrection Ship, Part I]]). This is also the first time that Adama refers to Valerii as a "her", as opposed to as an "it". Valerii is happily reunited with Helo and Tyrol when the two are released after Adama resumes full command of the Fleet, though she is more enthusiastic to see Helo than Tyrol. ([[Resurrection Ship, Part II]]).

Weeks later, President Roslin, on her deathbed, recommends that Valerii's fetus be aborted, fearing dire consequences for the Fleet. On hearing this news, Helo is terrified, but Valerii, having cooperated fully to aid the Fleet to save herself and her child and to show that not all Cylons are dangerous, is enraged. Marines sent to inspect her and later to take her to [[sickbay]] for the procedure are forced to restrain the angry Cylon.

At the last minute (spurred by threats from his virtual [[Number Six]]), [[Gaius Baltar]] learns of an astonishing ability of the fetal blood of Valerii's baby: it destroys cancer cells. Taking a small blood sample, he injects it into the dying Laura Roslin. Moments later, her cancer is "gone," according to Dr. [[Cottle]]. The abortion procedure is cancelled. The recovering Roslin visits Valerii in her cell and smiles at the sight of Valerii stroking her belly, just as a human female would ([[Epiphanies]]).

===Birth of her daughter===
[[Image:Sharondownloaded.jpg|170px|thumb|left|Helo comforts Valerii as the doctors start to perform an emergency birth procedure ]]
Valerii begins to bleed; her placenta is detaching. An emergency [[Wikipedia:Cesarean section|birth procedure]] must to be performed by Dr. [[Cottle]] to save both the baby's and Caprica-Valerii's life. Helo and Valerii name the baby girl [[Hera]] and marvel at her as she lay in an incubator. Some time later, believing their baby is out of danger, the baby apparently dies due to her underdeveloped lungs and Dr. Cottle's failure to intubate her in time. In a state of shock, Valerii nearly strangles Cottle in grief before being subdued, and subsequently falls into a deep depression.

However, unbeknownst to Caprica-Valerii, Hera is still alive. In a move to not have to kill the baby but at the same time not have it raised by Valerii or risk having it captured by unseen Cylon agents, Valerii's baby was switched with another dead child. President [[Laura Roslin|Roslin]], Dr. Cottle and Presidental aide [[Tory Foster]] place Valerii's baby in the care of [[Maya]], a foster mother. Maya is told a cover story that disguises Hera's true identity ([[Downloaded]]).

Valerii's depression over losing her child only worsens. Helo convinces her to aid in the rescue of [[Samuel Anders|Anders]] and the other survivors on Caprica, in part to try and draw her out of her depression. Valerii's knowledge of Cylon FTL technology makes the rescue possible by acting as a conduit between the Colonial Raptors and the far more advanced FTL computer salvaged from a Heavy Raider ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I]]).

On Caprica, Thrace demonstrates a new level of trust for Valerii by throwing her a gun during a firefight with ambushing Centurions. Later, Valerii is as perplexed as everyone else when the Cylons disengage and apparently leave the planet for good. She ''is'' aware, however, that [[Cavil|Brother Cavil]], a man who approaches the group and loudly proclaims the end of the occupation to be a miracle, is a [[Cylon agent]]. She witholds this information from the others. On ''Galactica'', Cavil is exposed by Chief Tyrol (who realizes that a copy of Cavil was already present in the Fleet). Angered by Valerii's obvious withholding of Cavil's nature, Admiral Adama sends Valerii back to the brig along with Cavil. When asked by a distraught Helo why she didn't report this crucial fact, she replies "They killed my baby. Do you think I care about you, or us, or whether or not Adama trusts me anymore?" Valerii withdraws further, shutting Helo out completely. ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]).

===Officer of the Colonial Fleet===
[[Image:Season 3 - Promo - Epi 1 - 2 - C-Number Eight, Adama, Helo.jpg|235px|Sharon Agathon is sworn-in by Adama as a Colonial Officer.|thumb]]
More than a year later, and four months after ''Galactica's'' and ''Pegasus's'' retreat from New Caprica, Sharon Agathon, now married to Karl "Helo" Agathon, is still in her special brig, but Admiral Adama has taken to sitting down to tea and talking in confidence with her. Her cell now has a couch, table, and other amenities ([[Occupation]]). Admiral Adama commissions Agathon into the Colonial Fleet as a Lieutenant (Junior Grade). This could be because he trusts her, because the upcoming rescue mission is much easier with her help, or some combination of both.

Her first mission as an officer has two objectives: to lead an insertion force that will serve as a liaison between the [[New Caprica Resistance|resistance]] and ''Galactica'' during the extraction of the New Caprica population, and to, herself, infiltrate the Cylon defenses and secure the [[launch key]]s to the grounded Colonial Ships. She leads two Raptors in an intra-atmosphere Jump and links up with [[Samuel Anders]] and his squad at the [[Breeders Canyon]]. Their planning is interrupted when an unknown number of [[Cylon Centurion]]s ambush their position ([[Precipice]]). Agathon and her assigned Marines had anticipated enemy contact, so the Marines, from a supporting position, easily neutralize the Cylon attackers.

That night, the combined force of Agathon, her Marines, and Anders' squad return to [[New Caprica City]]. On the day following, Agathon enters the [[New Caprica Detention Center|detention center]] to recover the launch keys. Two human [[New Caprica Police]] guards, not being able to distinguish Sharon from any other Eight unit, let her enter and she interfaces with a data terminal to determine the location of the keys. As she is taking them, a [[Number Three]] enters the room and recognizes her as a defector. The Three tells her that [[Hera]] is still alive, and Agathon responds that Adama would not lie to her, shooting the Three in each leg, and departs. When she hands over the keys to [[Galen Tyrol]], she asks if Hera had truly died and, and he affirms ([[Exodus, Part I]]).

Following the Battle of New Caprica, Sharon is eating in the mess hall with Helo, insisting that they not use the callsign Boomer, as it belonged to [[Sharon Valerii|another Sharon]]. Helo asks the crew for suggestions for a callsign, finally opting for [[Hot Dog]]'s suggestion: Athena, after a number of robotic callsigns are proposed. The gathered personnel's treatment of Sharon during the exchange is good-natured ribbing, implying that she has finally managed to achieve a degree of acceptance ([[Torn]]).

==Notes==
*Until season 3, "Caprica-Sharon" or "Caprica-Valerii" was the nickname used to differentiate this character from "Boomer" Valerii, the original Cylon "sleeper" agent.
*During Season 1, Caprica-Valerii parts her hair on the left side of her head, while "Boomer" Valerii parted her hair to the right.
*Sharon Agathon's callsign, "Athena", may be a reference to her nature as a Cylon, if the Colonists share the Greek myth that Pallas Athene sprung from the head of Zeus fully grown without ever having a childhood – much as a Cylon does.
* Her callsign also creates a parallelism with the [[Original Series]] character of [[Athena (TOS)|Athena]]. In the Original Series, Athena was the daughter of [[Adama (TOS)|Adama]]. [[William Adama]], in the Re-imagined Series, felt a close fatherly bond to "Boomer" Valerii. Agathon's relationship with Adama is very similar and reinforces the similarity with the Original Series character.
Captain '''Karl C. Agathon''' was the [[ECO]] aboard [[Raptor 478]], piloted by Lieutenant JG [[Sharon Valerii (Galactica copy)|Sharon "Boomer" Valerii]]. He is young, loyal, capable, resourceful, and attracted to Valerii. Those aboard ''Galactica'' seem to find his real name cumbersome or unwieldy. He's almost always addressed by his callsign, "Helo."

== Biography ==

At the time of the [[Cylon Attack]], Lieutenant Karl Agathon, serial number PK-789934, is on patrol in Valerii's Raptor flying with [[battlestar]] ''Galactica's'' last fully-operational [[Viper (RDM)|Viper]] squadron, and witnesses the destruction of the squadron by [[Cylon]] [[Raider]]s, after the Raiders exploit the [[Command Navigation Program]] to disable the Vipers.

Following the attack, Agathon and Valerii attempt to return to ''Galactica'', avoiding Cylon patrols, but are unsuccessful: their Raptor is damaged in a Cylon missile strike, and Helo receives a wound in his leg from shrapnel that pierces their ship. As a result of the damage received, the Raptor is forced down on Caprica, where Valerii makes emergency repairs. Moments after Valerii's repairs, their ship is mobbed by civilians desperate to get off the planet.

With limited space for survivors aboard the Raptor, Agathon volunteers his seat to Dr. [[Gaius Baltar]] and remains on [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Caprica|Caprica]] in the hope that Baltar will be of benefit to the Colonials in their renewed fight against the Cylons. Both Helo and Boomer feel that there is no chance that he will survive the Cylon nuclear attack on Caprica, but he selflessly chooses to stay behind anyway, giving up his own life so Baltar can get to ''[[Galactica]]''.

=== Marooned ===

After Boomer's departure, Helo apparently separates from the surviving refugees (who soon succumb to radiation poisoning<ref>The fate of these refugees is noted briefly by [[Laura Roslin]] ([[Mary McDonnell]]'s character acting as narrator) in the special program, "[[Battlestar Galactica: The Story So Far]]."</ref>) and flees from Cylon ground forces. After six days on Caprica, surviving on anti-radiation medications from his survival pack, he is captured after noticing a version of the Cylon known (secretly only to Gaius Baltar) as [[Number Six]].

Helo is "rescued" by [[Sharon Agathon|a copy of Sharon Valerii]], unaware that this is not the same one who abandoned him on Caprica. She guides him across Caprica as part of an elaborate (if potentially hastily conceived) plan / experiment designed to make this second Valerii the object of Agathon's affections. Several situations are engineered to make this happen:
[[Image:Valley_of_Darkness-Starbuck_Helo.jpg|thumb|right|300px|Helo and [[Kara Thrace|Starbuck]] in her apartment in [[Delphi]], [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Caprica|Caprica]] in [[Valley of Darkness]].]]
*A "honey trap" offering reasonably secure accommodations (a "fall-out shelter") together with sufficient supplies for two people beneath a restaurant ([[Act of Contrition]])
*Engineering Valerii's capture to test Helo's loyalty towards her ([[You Can't Go Home Again]] / [[Litmus]])
*Establishing a further (long-term) "honey trap" for Helo and Valerii in the wilderness of Caprica.

Agathon eventually admits that he has feelings for Valerii and that he would have gladly traded places with Chief Tyrol, who he knew was having an illict relationship with her. Following this, the two have sex in a forest on Caprica. Afterwards, Valerii is instructed by the Five and Six overseeing the experiment to lead her lover to a nearby cabin, and to kill him if he refuses to settle there. However, the Cylon plan goes awry because Valerii has apparently fallen in love with Agathon. She forces them both on the run once more, this time genuinely seeking to escape from Caprica via the military base at [[Delphi]], which is now under Cylon control.

During their attempts to reach Delphi, Agathon witnesses a troop of Cylon [[Centurion]]s being led by Number Six - the woman he thought had been killed when Valerii rescued him. This draws him to the conclusion that the Cylons are using human clones they have created ([[Colonial Day]]). Once at Delphi, Agathon receives another shock: not only are further versions of Six on-hand - he comes face-to-face with another Valerii copy, revealing the full truth about the woman known as "Boomer" to him. Believing he was lured into a trap, Agathon goes on the run, leaving Valerii at the base.

The Valerii copy that Helo has paired with later catches up with him, and while he shoots her in the arm, he does not kill her as she might be of use to him in escaping the planet. Caprica-Valerii then informs Helo that she is pregnant with his child, and that they should go to the [[Delphi Museum of the Colonies|Delphi Museum]]. There, Agathon is reunited with [[Kara Thrace|Kara "Starbuck" Thrace]] (who just arrived from ''[[Galactica]]'' using a stolen [[Cylon Raider]]) immediately after she kills a copy of Number Six and retrieves the [[Arrow of Apollo]]. Thrace, realizing immediately that Valerii is a Cylon (knowing much earlier than Helo that Cylons can mimic human form) tries to kill Valerii, but Agathon stops her because she is pregnant ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II]], [[Scattered]]).

Valerii runs away out of fear of Thrace, taking her Cylon Raider. Fearing that [[Number Six]] will finish transferring her consciousness to a new body and warn the Cylons about the humans' presence in Delphi, Agathon and Thrace make their way to Thrace's old apartment ([[Scattered]], [[Valley of Darkness]]). Later, Thrace and Agathon join up with the [[Caprica Resistance|human resistance]] on Caprica ([[Resistance (episode)|Resistance]]).

=== The Resistance and escape from Caprica ===

Agathon, [[Samuel Anders|Anders]] and others later rescue Thrace from the Cylons' "hospital". Valerii returns to aid Helo in locating the missing Thrace, and later saves the day by gunning down several Centurions in a stolen [[Heavy Raider]]. Helo, Thrace, and Valerii leave Caprica en route to [[The Fleet (RDM)| the Fleet]] ([[The Farm]]). The group lands on the ''[[Astral Queen]]'', which has broken off from the rest of the Fleet ([[Home, Part I]]). When [[Lee Adama]] grabs the new copy of Valerii and threatens to shoot her, Helo raises his gun to Lee's head in response. They are calmed by Roslin, who then orders Valerii thrown out of an airlock. Valerii convinces Roslin of her usefulness before this happens, and later accompanies Helo and others to Kobol to find the Tomb of Athena ([[Home, Part I]]). On the way to the Tomb of Athena, [[Lee Adama|Apollo]] remarks to Starbuck that he is disturbed that Helo and this Valerii copy love each other, and Helo admits to Valerii that he now loves and trusts her. When they finally reach the tomb, Commander Adama orders Helo to stay outside with Valerii and Tom Zarek while Chief Tyrol guards all of them. With the successful gathering of information on the whereabouts of Earth, Helo and the group return to ''Galactica'' and the reunified Fleet.

=== Home on ''Galactica'' ===

Helo's welcome-home to ''Galactica'', months after being declared MIA on Caprica ([[Home, Part II]]), isn't a generally warm one. Many in the crew find his romance with the Caprica Valerii disquieting or disgusting. A few crew warm up to Helo after his suggestion of using carbon composites on the new fighter, the [[Blackbird]], turns [[Galen Tyrol|Tyrol]]'s pet project into a significant stealth technology ([[Flight of the Phoenix]]).

Chief Tyrol is still nursing the loss of Boomer (the ''Galactica'' copy of Valerii that left Helo on Caprica and later shoots Commander Adama), and now must deal with the return of another Valerii, her "memories" of him, and the fact that Helo is romantically involved with her. The friction between Helo and Tyrol becomes too much and a fight ensues before both realize that fighting will gain them little. The two tacitly appear to accept the awkward situation for what it is.

Helo and Tyrol learn of the gang-rape of the captured [[Gina|Cylon]] on battlestar ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]'', and are shocked to learn that the "Cylon interrogator", Lieutenant [[Alistair Thorne]], would be "interrogating" the incarcerated Valerii that day. Prior to this discovery, Helo is prepared to fight the drunken ''Pegasus'' crewmembers over their disrespect, but Tyrol realizes what is coming for Valerii and convinces him to head to the brig to her aid. While apparently successful in stopping the assault, the two are arrested and taken to ''Pegasus'' when Thorne is accidentally killed. Admiral [[Helena Cain]] conducts summary courts-martial on the two ''Galactica'' crewmembers, finding them guilty and sentencing them to execution. When Commander Adama hears of this abrupt treatment, he launches a Raptor with [[Colonial Marine Corps|Marine]] units as well as his Viper squadrons to get Helo and Tyrol back. A standoff ensues, with not only Helo's and Tyrol's lives in the balance, but thousands of others in the Fleet ([[Pegasus (episode)|Pegasus]]).

===Aboard ''Pegasus''===

After Starbuck returns with images of the Resurrection Ship, Adama and Cain agree to a truce. Helo and Tyrol are given a stay of execution, but not a pardon. While they are imprisoned aboard ''Pegasus'', a pair of deck hands, irate about Thorne's death, assault them. [[Jack Fisk]], the XO of ''Pegasus'', puts a stop to this by citing regulations, but rebuffs Helo's thanks. Like the deck crew, Fisk had been saved from death by Thorne, and he is not sympathetic to Valerii, whom he views as a machine.

After the destruction of the [[Resurrection Ship]] and the death of Admiral Cain, Fisk becomes the Commander of ''Pegasus''. He returns Helo and Tyrol to ''Galactica'', where the former is joyfully received by Valerii.

=== The events of [[Epiphanies|Epiphanies]] ===

When the dying President Roslin ordersthe hybrid baby aborted, Helo attempts to dissuade Adama from carrying out the order in private conversation in the Admiral's office, but fails. When Valerii is being brought to the medical bay for the abortion, Helo blocks the door, his hand on his pistol. He offers to take Sharon aboard a [[Raptor]] and leave the Fleet, but is rebuffed by Adama, who tells him, "You're a soldier". Helo retorts that he is a father, like Adama.
Baltar defuses the potentially violent incident by arriving with his report on the medically useful nature of the hybrid fetus. There are no apparent consequences from his actions.

=== The hybrid birth ===

Helo is present when [[Hera]], the human-Cylon hybrid, is born. He and Valerii marvel at their baby, and Helo shocks Valerii when he says that it almost makes one believe in the Cylon [[God]]. When Valerii attacks Dr. [[Cottle]], accusing him of murder after he informs her of the baby's [[Maya|"death,"]] Helo tries to restrain her but ends up with marines pointing guns at him as Valerii is returned to her cell.

=== Caprica SAR & New Caprica ===

Despite Valerii's continued belief that Cottle and the other humans killed [[Hera]], Helo is able to convince her to assist Kara Thrace's plan for the rescue of Samuel Anders and his [[Caprica Resistance]] group ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I]]). Helo and the others manage to survive the Cylon assault after [[Cavil]] informs them that the Cylons have left the Colonies.
With the happenstance discovery of [[New Caprica]], the relationship between Helo and [[Sharon Valerii (Caprica copy)|Sharon Valerii]] becomes increasingly strained, due primarily to her growing depression over the loss of their child and the fact that Valerii did not inform the SAR team that Caprica-[[Cavil]] was a Cylon agent.

During the year in orbit around New Caprica he and Sharon Valerii become married. Agathon is acting as a replacement to [[Felix Gaeta]] as ''Galactica'''s tactical officer ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]) and has been promoted to the position as ''Galactica's'' XO.<ref name="XO"/><ref name="podcast"/>

== The Second Exodus ==

While he temporarily relinquishes the XO slot after the Battle of New Caprica and Tigh's return to ''Galactica'', Tigh's actions and attitude cause him to be relieved of duty ([[Collaborators]]). Helo finds himself once again acting as Adama's right-hand man ([[Torn]]). During this time, Helo is shown to have been promoted to Captain (although the exact date of his promotion is still unknown) ([[A Measure of Salvation]]).

When faced with using the recently discovered Cylon virus as an agent for genocide (A Measure of Salvation), Helo undermines the mission, which he feels is an atrocious and evil action, by sabotaging the Cylon prisoner's prison cells so they all suffocate before they can be downloaded into a Resurrection Ship, and therefore downloading the virus. Roslin and Adama both know the potential culprit, but Adama, who felt the President was on morally shaky grounds using genocide as a military solution, decides not to take any action against Helo.

== Notes ==

=== Name ===

The [[Reimagined|new]] [[Battlestar Galactica (RDM)|Battlestar Galactica]] plays heavily on [[Greek mythology]] and history; the use of names such as [[Delphi]] and those of the [[Wikipedia:Twelve Olympians|Olympian gods]] is an example. Helo's names have many possible referrents:
*[[Wikipedia:Agathon|Agathon]] was an ancient Greek tragic poet.
*''[[Wikipedia:Agathodaemon|Agathos Daemon]]'' was of one of the spirits that lie between the gods and mortals in Greek mythology. He is associated with the cultivation of grapes and grain as well as luck and abundance.
*The prefix "Agatho-" means 'good' in Greek.
*[[Wikipedia:Helios|Helios]] was the Greek god of the Sun associated most prominently with the myth of [[Wikipedia:Phaëton|Phaëton]].
*"Helo" is slang for [[Wikipedia:Helicopter|helicopter]], and the [[Raptor]] craft Helo crews is visually based on an [[Wikipedia:AH-64 Apache|Apache helicopter]]. This fits with the callsign of his former co-pilot, "[[Sharon Valerii (Galactica copy)|Boomer]]", which is slang for a ballistic missile submarine.

=== Character ===

*In an [http://scifibrain.ign.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2965&Itemid=0&limit=1&limitstart=1 interview], actor Tahmoh Penikett discussed the (unofficial) backstory he had worked out with [[Katee Sackhoff]] to explain her comment in "[[Scattered]]" that they "go way back":
:"We are old friends and we have been through a lot together. I have been asked this question before, but I think it is pretty safe to bet that we were either in the academy together or we have known each other for years. Whether there has ever been a romantic relationship, that is definitely a possibility--especially with Starbuck...It could have been a one night stand, but there is in fact a relationship. We are more like brother and sister, and have been through a lot together. Helo really understands Starbuck and she understands him. They are a lot closer than most people think."
*Helo's full name (or even his fate) wasn't revealed until "[[33]]". He was initially intended as an expendable character; originally, he was supposed to have actually died when the Raptor left him behind on Caprica. Penikett's performance convinced [[Wikipedia:The powers that be|TPTB]] otherwise. Curiously, Helo's [[Crashdown|second]] replacement on Boomer's Raptor, [[Margaret Edmondson|Racetrack]], was also intended as a one-shot character, but was retained by TPTB for similar reasons.
*While he is shown in a [[Raptor]] during the funeral of his [[Hera|daughter]] in [[Downloaded]], "[[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I]]" is the first time he has done his job as [[ECO]] on screen since the [[Miniseries]].

The stub calls the Warrior an "upgrade" of the old chrome toaster.
Given what we have seen of the inside of the BaseStar and Starbuck's Raider, isn't it likely that the Warrior is a product of the semi-organic line of Cylons?

The Warrior is, at best, the conceptual and functional sucessor to the old Centurion. A similar relationship might be found between the the M-4 Sherman tanke of World War II and the M-1A2 Abrams tank of today. Both machines do the same job, have many analogous features, but the only contributions the Sherman made to the development of the Abrams were its flaws.

Nick Kuzmik

: Actually, given that we never saw any organic matter come out of a shot Cylon Warrior, we can assume it is more robotic than organic. Obviously, this has not been stated overtly, so it is still conjecture. Therefore, it is possible that the Cylon Warrior is an "evolutionary" step to an organic-like Cylon (one with more fluid movement and flexibility) using non-organic materials. -- [[User:Joe.Beaudoin|Joe.Beaudoin]] (not logged in)
Bigger problem: what's with that ''entire'' paragraph? How do we *know* they weren't deployed in large numbers on the ground to mop up colonial units after the intial attacks? I always assumed they were, just off screen.--[[User:The Merovingian|The Merovingian]] ([[Special:Contributions/The Merovingian|C]] - [[Special:Editcount/The Merovingian|E]]) 21:46, 1 April 2006 (CST)

<blockquote>The Cylon Centurions may also have different armors. For instance, a small number of them wreaked havoc when boarding Galactica, and could only be destroyed using explosive rounds (Valley of Darkness). </blockquote>
Other than their resistance to small arms fire, there was no indication that the Centurion boarding party comprised an up-armored model, although that would not be a bad a idea considering the close and nasty fighting they could anticipate.

Comparison of the images on the Centurion page <ref>http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Image:Cylon_Centurion_New_001.jpg</ref> and <ref>http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Image:Centz.jpg</ref> does show evidence of modified armor. Furthermore, additional armor would reduce speed and manuverability, which creates a contradiction, as the attack on Galactica is when the Centurions were at their most nimble. I propose that this is not a matter of Cylon armor, but of Colonial <i>ammo</i>.

Its been a while... that and I don't own any of the DVD's so somebody has to help me out here...
But Helo and Boomer's "kills" on Caprica are suspect because the Cylons were playing with him. Did we ever confirm the destruction of a Centrion via Colonial Fleet sidearm fire? Or did they just fall down and play dead after getting hit with lead spitballs?

On Kobol, again, I don't recal any confirmed pistol kills, we did see some probable <i>rifle</i> kills. But a rifle with full metal jacket, ball round; heck, if I'm fighting Cylons, all I'm bringing is armor-piercing; is a very different catridge from a pistol round. By way of example, fire a full metal jacket, 9 mm Parabellum from a HK P9 pistol. Now fire that same round from an HK MP5. The MP5 will have higher muzzle velocity, longer range, greater accuracy, and greater penetration. Changed that to a necked-down micro-caliber, and a service rifle could concievably take out Centurions with the right ammo.

Which brings us to the question: "Why didn't they have the good bullets on Galactica?" Sean Connery said it oh so well in <u>Hunt For Red October</u>, "Most of the things in here don't react too well to bullets."
Shipboard security is probably issued some time of frangible round that won't over penetrate, and won't richocet too much. That also means it is pretty much uselless against armor. The limited stockpile of explosive rounds are there "just in case" they need to penetrate some armor, but the dedicated armor piercing ammo is probably stored somewhere that was not conveniently accessible.

With regards to the Cylons varried speed and intelligence, I still think that the Centurions are like the Raiders, crunchy on the outside, chewy on the inside. Its also possible that the team sent to board Galactica was a group of elites. Older, more experiences, better trained. Kind of like Scar in a way...
:Yeah, I noticed the stuff about the non-sentient, non-organic stuff shortly after writing all that. I guess the if its an official source we have to accept the assorted armor thing. Though it begs the question, why not use the beefy ones more often?
[[User:Grimlock|Grimlock]] 23:19, 16 October 2006 (CDT)
:: The Cylons are practical beings, who are limited by the amount of natural resources at their disposal. It follows that they may not need to upgrade Centurions ''en masse'' since it's not the most practical thing to do. As Six mentions in the Miniseries, they still have the old "walking chrome toaster" models around, since they have their uses. Or they may simply be limited by said resources at their disposal. After all, you don't need a heavily armored Cylon to plant tress now, do you? In addition to that question, bear in mind that Centurions also double as manual labor -- heavier armor detracts their effectiveness, even if they are machines. -- [[User:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|Joe Beaudoin]] [[User talk:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|So say we all]] - [[Battlestar Wiki:Site support|Donate]] 07:48, 18 October 2006 (CDT)
== Armor Hood ==
More a question of curiosity then anything else, but while I was looking at some of the pictures (especially the ones from the miniseries and those from season 3) I noticed the metal "hood" the Centurions have that covers the back of their head seems to vary in sizes. In the miniseries and the full body picture in the wiki, the hood seems to rise higher then the top of the cylon's head. But in other [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Image:Centz.jpg shots], such as those of the Centurion garding Baltar in Collaborators, the hood seems noticeably smaller. I'm wondering if its a change in design or simply due to the positioning of the Cylon's head. --[[User:Ghilz|Ghilz]] 22:40, 30 October 2006 (CST)
:It's just the positioning, the Centurions have looked the same throughought the whole series, if only looking a bit taller....but they're probably the same height too. --[[User:Sauron18|Sauron18]] 23:51, 30 October 2006 (CST)

== Downloads and Centurions ==

We've already established that Centurions are just 'bots. No organics, presumably no downloading. While Athena may have provided the reasoning behind that, there is a good reason not to limit the Centurions that way. The best example is Scar. He was experienced, wily, and very lethal.

Now imagine how the events in Valley Darkness could have gone if there was one centurion on each team that had 1/3 of that skill and experience. I'm not saying the Centurions can't learn... but if they can learn and benefit from experience, are they smart enough to rebel later?

The smart move would be to build a Centurion around the CNS of a skin job and just download into a "combat" body when needed. But this doesn't seem possible. Recall tha tCavil had to scratch open his carotid artery with and empty shell casin.

Not sure where I'm going here but something is bugging me

Grimlock: Just trying smooth the language about "different armors"

: ''For Centurions from the [[Original Series]], see [[Centurion (TOS)]].''

[[Image:CylonCenturion.jpg|200px|thumb|right|Centurion, Warrior of the Cylon Army.]]

The basic unit of Cylon ground forces, the '''Cylon Centurion''' appears to be an upgrade to the [[Cylon Centurion Model 0005]]. They have long, talon-like fingers with multiple joints and have a double barreled automatic projectile weapon mounted on the end of each arm. These newer, fiercer Centurions are capable of moving extremely fast via [[Wikipedia:bipedal locomotion|bipedal locomotion]] and are capable of jumping over obstacles. The projectile guns built into each arm are so powerful that they make counterattacks very difficult by Colonials since the barrage is, in effect, much like a [[Wikipedia:gatling gun|gatling gun]]. Unlike the Model 0005, a single Centurion is more than enough to terrorize a squad of Colonial fighters. They also use mortars in combat.

It is unknown whether the Centurions can "speak." It is certainly possible that they communicate with each other via some sort of computer network, and thus have no need for verbal speech.

The Cylon Centurions may also have different armor options. For instance, a small number of them wreaked havoc when boarding ''[[Galactica]]'', and could only be destroyed using explosive rounds ([[Valley of Darkness]]).

Centurions encountered on [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Caprica|Caprica]] reacted more slowly, acted less intelligently, and were more easily destroyed by small arms fire. This may be due to the Cylons' plans for [[Karl Agathon|Helo]] and [[Sharon Valerii (Caprica copy)|the copy of Sharon Valerii]] with him; killing them would render their experiments worthless. A similar group of Centurions found on [[Kobol]] during the episode [[Fragged]] were equally less individually intelligent. It may be that these Centurions are very simple soldiers that, despite their menacing statistics, are limited in their evolution and programming. Centurions are not sentient, and are not [[Resurrection Ship|downloaded]] upon destruction.

On [[New Caprica]], the Centurions are used for a variety of jobs. Among them guards, soldiers and executioners.

When the Cylons created their new Centurions, they did not give them sentience, making them rely solely on programming. Ironically this was done, according to information from [[Sharon Agathon]], to prevent another robotic rebellion similar to the one the Cylons themselves originally orchestrated. Moreover, the Centurions are programmed to not harm any of the 12 humanoid Cylon models and they cannot distinguish one copy from another ([[Precipice]]).

===Cinematic Notes===
The creators of the Re-imagined Series decided that using actors in an elaborate Cylon robot outfit (as was done in the Original Series) would detract from the realism of the series. They decided to make fully computer-generated Cylon Centurions for the new series.

Inaugural director [[Michael Rymer]] wanted the new Cylon warrior to blend in and avoid detracting from the live actor's performances. However, the new designs were eye-catching, and the new robot became a popular addition to many scenes. The virtual Cylons are designed with full articulation in the hands and joints that gives a realistic appearance to the viewer. Initially the new warrior was built with more human movement, such as swaggering. However, the movements did not fit the robotic attitude that the writers wanted to convey and were later discarded.

Actors interact with a life-size cardboard stand-in when filming a scene that will later have virtual Cylon warriors inserted. Some times human actors (production assistants in reality) stand in for the CG Centurions in more complex shots. As revealed in a [http://www.scifi.com/battlestar/bts/videoblog/ Video Blog] entry on SciFi's ''Galactica'' website, stand-ins portraying Centurions are made to wear thick black vests with the word '''CENTURION''' printed across them. Much like the cardboard stand-ins the "actors" are then digitally painted out of the shot and replaced with virtual Centurions.
== My Prediction ==

And it shouldn't be a big surprise, but I have to state it for the record:

Battlestar ''Pegasus'' makes its last appearance today. I think it will be used to ram a basestar or two to save ''Galactica'', which puts up a good fight but is getting outmatched.
My prediction doesn't come from anything but from the gut, but it should be interesting if it comes true. --[[User:Spencerian|Spencerian]] 16:53, 20 October 2006 (CDT)
:I'm hoping that it doesnt get destroyed, seeing as that would kill Lee Adama and far too many other people - if this happened, people would switch off. I'm predicting that it'll save the day at the last second. If you think about it, Lee Adama was ordered to stay behind with the fleet and continue the search for earth. I'm betting that he does the usual thing of going against orders, jumping back anyway at the last second and launches a nuke or two at a basestar.
== Is this a clue? ==

When Starbuck gets back to Galactica with the kid, and the supposed mother sees it, and latches on, she says either "Gods bless you" or "GOD bless you", and after watching it about 5 times on my TiVo, I'm leaning towards GOD, singular, and perhaps a clue that this lady is not who she claims. I mean, if that really is a hybrid, then it would be valuable enough to pull such a move just to get it out of Colonial hands.

Also, if it weren't for horrible interior design, I'd rather Galactica had been boned, and they all just moved into Pegasus and renamed it Galactia-A or something. If it weren't for the lame bridge, it'd be a much better ship.

: The assumption is reasonable -- however, I believe it is extremely likely that the woman is who she claims to be. Also, given the horrible success rate at Cylon farms, it is likely that Kacey was indeed a ruse to get Thrace to love Conoy. Once Conoy had Thrace's love, their love would lead to the next step. As for the "God" versus "Gods" thing.... also, it's been indicated that the Colonials have varying faiths, and some don't necessarily believe in the Sacred Scrolls, Pythia and all that jazz. Also, it wouldn't be ''Battlestar Galactica'' without ''Galactica''... -- [[User:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|Joe Beaudoin]] [[User talk:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|So say we all]] - [[Battlestar Wiki:Site support|Donate]] 00:01, 21 October 2006 (CDT)
== Galactica's atmospheric insertion ==

I haven't been able to double check but I'm pretty sure Helo read off their altitude as "900,000." Now IIRC, the Colonials use metric so that would be meters. In other words, they were 600 miles off the deck. So I'm pretty sure I misheard that.

But even factoring for editing and such, I'm pretty sure they took some dramatic lisence with the freefall time.

RDM said they were going to try to keep the physics real, and this is peanut stuff.

<math>s=v_{i}t+\frac{at^{2}}{2}</math>
<math>v_i=0</math> because theyare starting from rest, so freefall time given by <math>\sqrt{\frac{2s}{a}}=t</math>
::I think Zarek knew who was in charge at that exact moment. It's hard to challenge for leadership in the middle of a fight. It's hard to change the course of a ship in mid-stream. There's nothing to say that Zarek won't challenge for the presidency in later episodes, but at that exact moment, I think that the only thing he was thinking about was getting off the planet along with everybody else. And I do speculate that maybe he was thinking that he was on the wrong side of the coin over the whole Baltar election and maybe has a new-found fondness for Laura Roslin from the evidence of the firing squad and the evacuation. While Zarek can clearly show that he did not collaborate with the Cylons by way of his incarceration, it is very likely that Zarek (a man that plays the political game almost as well as Roslin) wants little to do with inheriting the administration of a despised president. Only Roslin, the past president, will stand an immediate chance to assume the interim role once more with support from the populace. Based on his behavior, it seems that Zarek, once Roslin's adversary, appears to accept Roslin far more than in the past, even with concern for her life. He may choose to be her vice president, and she might accept it. --[[User:Spencerian|Spencerian]] 20:55, 24 October 2006 (CDT)

::::I think Zarek plays the political game quite a bit better than Roslin. He simply does not have as good a position as she does coming out of all of this. I agree wholeheartedly with this analysis. Roslin will, from a purely popular standpoint, have a much better position than Zarek going into whatever reorganization the fleet and civilian population will undergo in the aftermath of the great escape. Indeed, Adama is very clearly (for the present moment) viewed as something of a messiah, and I suspect any support Adama cares to throw into the presidency will go directly to Roslin. Zarek knows what time it is, and I suspect that he will quietly accept the vice-presidency. A cynical man might even be pardoned for supposing that Zarek foresaw this and planned accordingly. --[[User:Felix Culpa|Felix Culpa]] 22:52, 25 October 2006 (CDT)
==Quite the episode==
Y'know, I realized, this episode's tossed up a lot about the show. We started off with one half-crewed battlestar, then grew to two half-crewed battlestars, and now we're down to one fully-crewed battlestar. Plus, Ellen was killed, Starbuck's been through hell, and a good 3/4 of the fleet has gone through horrible events at the hands of the Cylons. I'm REALLY looking forward to seeing what our beloved RDM does with the series. --[[User:BklynBruzer|BklynBruzer]] 20:11, 24 October 2006 (CDT)
==Atmospheric Heating Effects==

Of course it looked cool, but I am not really sure why the underside of Galactica would have been superheated as it descended toward New Caprica City the way it was protrayed in the episode. Such superheating is not the result of free-falling through the atmosphere, but actually the result of friction with the atmosphere due to extreme velocity. Which is precisely why skydivers do not burn up after jumping out of an airplane but space craft deorbiting (traveling initially at about 5 miles per second coming from low Earth orbit as an example) do. Galactica jumped into the atmosphere over New Caprica City, it did not (strictly speaking) reenter the atmosphere. It is possible, of course, that any velocity Galactica had prior to jumping was imparted to or else retained by Galactica after the jump. However, one might be pardoned for supposing that any such velocity would have been along the ship's main bow-to-stern axis (though this is not necessarily true), and not stright along the free fall axis the ship was clearly heating up on (i.e., from dorsal-to-ventral axis). I would also point out that Galactica did not appear to be traveling at a sufficient speed in its fall to cause superheating, though of course this may be the subject of debate. Anyway, just a thought. The dramatic effect more than made up for any possible technical inaccuracy, and I agree woth those who think this is the best episode on the new series yet. --[[User:Felix Culpa|Felix Culpa]] 19:13, 25 October 2006 (CDT)
: Although I agree with your assessment -- and not to fanwank at all -- perhaps the burning effect is a result of jumping into a planetary atmosphere? -- [[User:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|Joe Beaudoin]] [[User talk:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|So say we all]] - [[Battlestar Wiki:Site support|Donate]] 06:44, 26 October 2006 (CDT)
::Well you have to keep in mind the mammoth size of the ''Galactica''. I think she was moving more than speedily enough to cause severe heating on the lower parts of the ship. --[[User:BklynBruzer|BklynBruzer]] 10:28, 26 October 2006 (CDT)
:::Just a relevent excerpt from the [[Podcast:Exodus, Part II|podcast]] (maybe it deserves a podcast ref on "Galactica type battlestar"):
:::"We had some internal questions about the technical feasibility of Galactica jumping into the atmosphere and falling through the- falling like a rock through this. You could argue it either way. It's all s- it's science fiction so who knows what Galactica's made of and the structure integrity, etc., etc. My logic was, "Look. If Galactica can take hit from a nuke, and keep on moving, which we established in the miniseries. If it can take a nuke and still be ok on some level, this is a tough motherfuckin' machine." So that means if it- I can buy that it has enough structural integrity to fall through that atmosphere. It couldn't maneuver. It can't fly. That's not what it's designed to do. But I bought the idea that it could hang together long enough to just fall straight down and then launch its Vipers and then get the hell out of there." --[[User:Steelviper|Steelviper]] 10:38, 26 October 2006 (CDT)

::::Uh... Yeah, I think Galatica was moving fast enough. Neglecting air drag, some quick calculations, I put her speed near the ground at somewhere near Mach 2.25. Remember that the SR-71 flew at Mach 3+, but only in the neighborhood of 80,000 feet. The air is much thinner, and consquently frictional heating is much less. But Galactica was accelerating and moving into denser air layers.
::::Now given her downright crappy aerodynamics, it is not implausable that pockets of air stalled beneath the ship during the fall. This would allow the gasses to become super heated. Contrast this with say and SR-71. A given air molecule is only in contact with the skin of the plane for about .09 seconds.
::::Once we bring friction in, I don't think these numbers will vary <i>too</i> wildly, but if that's just a guesstimate
::::So anyway, Was she falling hot enough to glow red hot? I'm thinking no. Just too much metal, too much mass. Was she falling hot enough to superheat the surrounding atmosphere, I'll say "until I can perform more precise calculations, yeah, its possible."

:That centurions come equipped with different armor was mentioned by Bradley Thompson in the BW:OC. They are neither organic nor sentient though. --[[User:Serenity|Serenity]] 08:06, 16 October 2006 (CDT)
:Yeah, I noticed the stuff about the non-sentient, non-organic stuff shortly after writing all that. I guess the if its an official source we have to accept the assorted armor thing. Though it begs the question, why not use the beefy ones more often?

Plus, if you add up all the different Cylons seen so far, I think it's already over 12. [[User:Kuralyov|Kuralyov]] 13:39, 19 Jun 2005 (EDT)

Are we debating where the note in Adama's quarters, and 6's statements to Baltar about there being "12 Cylon Models" refers to 12 Humano-Cylon body types, in which case we have confirmed sightings of 4.

If we include ALL Cylons, this would add [[Cylon Warrior]], [[Cylon Raider]], Transports, and [[Cylon Basestar]], this brings the total up to 8.

If we include [[Cogitators]] and [[Cylon Centurion]] from the first war, that brings us up to 10.
PS How do I include a link, as I've done here, but with different text? And while I'm at it, what is a good way to find the link I'm looking for?

:: Do it like this (but without the spaces between the brackets): [ [Adama, William|Commander Adama] ]

And I think it'd be more than ten; there are:
#Cylon Centurian (seen in miniseries museum)
#Original Basestar (seen in miniseries museum)
#Original Raider
#New Raider
#New Basestar
#Warrior
#Transport
#Number Six
#Conoy
#Doral
#Boomer

So, going by the reasoning that there are twelve total models of Cylons including all the different Humanoid variants, that means there's a grand total of one more Cylon to be revealed. And since in press releases RDM has said that Season Two will introduce "one '''or two''' new Cylons" that's clearly not true. [[User:Kuralyov|Kuralyov]] 23:45, 19 Jun 2005 (EDT)

Unless those sneaky Cylons lied about the 12 thing just to mess with the cast's head... Random thought: Six specified that she is Model 6 of 12. I know "model" heavily implies something physical, but have any of they Cylons specified that "model" refers to their bodies?

I guess where I'm going with this is that could "model" by like a "personality model?" That said, certain personality models might have an affinity for a certain body type. Like Conoy #2 might have woken up as a Cylon Warrior or as a #6 because another Conoy body wasn't available at the time.

Or not. I'm a little zorched
