*The Cylon design the Armistice Officer is looking at in the beginning, and the Cylon Centurion in the Galacticas museum, are from the original show.
*A model of the original series' Cylon Basestar is also in the Galacticas museum.
*A mock-up, or possibly a servicable original series shuttle is another craft seen in Galacticas museum. Another of these shuttles is used by the Officer when docking at Armistice Station.
*A full-scale mock-up of an original series Cylon Raider is visible in the Galactica museum. It is hanging from the ceiling for the flight pod.
*The Original Series Viper appears in the museum as well.
*Finally, a Landram vehicle is seen in Galacticas museum.
*The theme played during the current affairs programme used to introduce Dr. Gaius Baltar is that of the original series fanfare. The fanfare is again heard during the decommissioning Viper flyby.
*Baltar tells Number Six that "the last time anyone saw a Cylon [i.e., the original series], they looked like walking chrome toasters."
*Baltar tells Number Six that "treason gets the death penalty;" in the original series, a point was made of the death penalty being abolished, even for treason.

* A sword carried by the Centurions in the original series is one of the weapons in Commander Adama's collection. It is possible the sword could be a war trophy picked up by Adama when the Galactica is boarded by the Cylons at the end of the war (Valley of Darkness deleted scene).
*In the first encounter between the Colonial Vipers and the Cylon Raiders, one of the pilots says that during the first war, Raiders looked like flying wings (the original series' Raider design).
*One of the Galacticas pilots who is killed by the Cylons is called Jolly, the name of a Galactica pilot from the original series.
*Roslin makes a point of calling Lee "Captain Apollo," saying "it has a nice ring to it."
*At the end of the Miniseries, Sharon Valerii says "by your command," the standard response of the original series' Cylons to the Imperious Leader.
The consistent usage of the letters "NC" may also be a reference to Star Trek (see 1701 above). However it should be noted, that according to old (pre-1950s) American aircraft registration standards, all tail numbers start with "N" and "C" stands for the category "standard"; the Star Trek usage itself is based on that.
*The original USS Enterprise makes a humorous cameo in the shot of the Fleet immediately before the memorial service.

Season One
33
*(Also seen elsewhere in the series)The format of the opening titles, a series of clips representing the story of the Cylon attack on the twelve colonies and the exodus of the fleet (all taken from the Miniseries, followed by clips from the upcoming episode, is a homage to the ITC / Century 21 television series Space 1999, which Ronald D. Moore admits to having watched while growing up.
* (Also seen elsewhere in the series) The photograph pilots touch on entering / leaving the Ready Room is called "Lest We Forget" and shows a Colonial soldier falling to his knees on witnessing the destruction of the capital of Arilon during the Cylon Attack. This is a direct homage to the pictures of NYFD personnel at Ground Zero on 9/11, while the title is drawn from the John Ford-directed film "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" starring John Wayne.
* The Rising Star mentioned as the birthplace of the fleet's first baby is a reference to the luxury liner Rising Star from the original series

Bastille Day
*Tom Zarek is played by Richard Hatch, famous for his role as Apollo in the original series
*The title is a reference to the event that began the French Revolution, when a crowd of around 1,000 stormed the Bastille prison in Paris. In this case, the prison is a prison ship, and the prisoners themselves take it over.
*The Astral Queens design is identical to the Prison Barge from the original series.
*The "I'm a bus driver, not a warden," comment from the Astral Queen's captain is a reference to Dr. McCoy's quips from Star Trek.
*The scene where Lee Adama holds his pistol to a kneeling Tom Zarek is a recreation of Dirty Harry, according to David Eick's comments in the DVD commentary. "That is the 'I know what you're thinking, punk' shot, down to the move, the lens, the distance of the camera away from the actor."

Act of Contrition
*Ron D. Moore states on the DVD commentary that the munition activation that kills several pilots was inspired by a similar event on the USS Forrestal in 1967.
*Also according to the DVD commentary, the ejection sequence at the beginning of each chapter is an homage to The Right Stuff.

You Can't Go Home Again
*This episode shares some similarity - although possibly unintentional - with the final Galactica 1980 episode, "The Return of Starbuck," where Starbuck is stranded on a desert moon, and uses a crashed Cylon Raider to return to the Galactica.
*The messy, organic feel of inside the Cylon Raider was inspired by the Alien series, according to David Eick during the DVD commentary.
*The "waggling" scene with Apollo's viper and Starbuck's Cylon Raider is a nod to the original series; Apollo and Starbuck had to "waggle" their own Cylon Raider in order to convey they were friendlies, after losing their transmitter in "The Hand of God".

Litmus
*The name of the episode refers to a litmus test, used in chemistry to determine the presence of an acid. The term is also used in politics, where it it means determining a candidate's stance on one or more crucial issues.
*Number Six says, "Don't make me angry, Gaius. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry." This is a possible reference to the famous catchphrase of Dr. Bruce Banner, just before turning into the Incredible Hulk: "You're making me angry, and you're not going to like me when I'm angry."

Six Degrees of Separation
*The name of the episode is a reference to the combined movie of the same name, and share a similar concept - that everyone can be connected to others (in this case, Baltar, the dead scientist, and Shelly).

Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down
*The episode was initially going to be a riff on the movie Crimson Tide, where both Adama and Tigh would begin to suspect one another of being a Cylon agent, ending up in a scene where they would be pointing weapons at one another.
*The episode's name comes from the Stereophonics' song "Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down". Its also the name of a Spanish language movie staring Antonio Banderas. The film, incidentally, was one of first NC-17-rated movies in America.

The Hand of God
*The final episode of the Original Series is also called "The Hand of God" and in both episodes Adama launches the first offensive strike against Cylon bases. However, according to the Official Companion neither the title, nor the plot are deliberate references and the writers didn't become aware of the parallels until much later after the writing.
*During the battle, Starbuck yells out to Lee, "You magnificent bastard!" In the movie Patton, during their first battle against each other, Patton says the same to Rommel.
*Ronald D. Moore says in his podcast that Lee Adama's flight through the tunnel is an homage to Star Wars.

Colonial Day
*The name of the news show, "The Colonial Gang", is a spoof of the CNN show "The Capital Gang."
*The controversy surrounding whether Laura Roslin would shake Tom Zarek's hand intentionally mirrored that at the signing of the Oslo Accords in 1993 about whether Yitzhak Rabin would shake hands with Yasser Arafat.
*At the end, Roslin tells Zarek that he doesn't need to worry about her kissing him, to which he replied that it's a shame, as he shaved extra close in anticipation of getting "smacked" by her. This dialogue was taken verbatim from the movie Patton, with Roslin as Montgomery and Zarek as Patton.

Kobol's Last Gleaming
*In both this episode and the original series "The Hand of God", the Colonials track Cylon Raiders using IFF transponders.
*Both "Kobol's Last Gleaming" and the original series "The Lost Planet of the Gods" are two-part episodes where the Galactica finds Kobol.

Season Two
Valley of Darkness
*The title is a reference to Psalms 23:4.
*Cally says, "I have a really bad feeling about this." This line (or variants) is a cult phrase amongst Star Wars fans. It is said in every Star Wars movie, and many of the Star Wars games and books.
*The small cassette tapes that Kara keeps in her Delphi apartment could be an homage to similar devices from the film version of A Clockwork Orange.

Fragged
*The term "fragged" comes from the Vietnam War, when it was used by American soldiers to describe deliberately killing superior officers in the field, who endangered their unit by their incompetence or recklessness. This was usually done by tossing a fragmentation grenade (hence, fragged) into the room or area where the superior was located, but with time the term has been applied to all murders of superiors, regardless of the weapon used.

*When Colonel Tigh asks of Adama's condition as Dr. Cottle begins surgery to save the Commander's life, he tells the XO, "How should I know? I'm not a psychic. Now get the hell out of here." This is an indirect nod to the character of "Dr. McCoy" from the original Star Trek series.

Resistance
*Cally's assassination of Boomer resembles Jack Ruby's assassination of Lee Harvey Oswald (the assassin of JFK).
*The shooting of unarmed civilians by the Marines on the Gideon, resulting in four deaths, was a reference to the Kent State Shootings from the Vietnam War era.

The Farm
*The character of Sue-Shaun is named after Richard Hatch's production company, Su-Shann Productions.

Flight of the Phoenix
*The name of the episode, and the theme of attempting to make a plane from scratch, comes from the book and two movies of the same name.

Pegasus
*The character Helena Cain and the battlestar Pegasus are loosely based on the Cain and Pegasus from the original series episode "The Living Legend".

Resurrection Ship, Part I
*Adama's code word for the assassination order is "downfall". That's both a reference to the Allied plan for a ground invasion of Japan in WWII as well as to the movie Downfall about the last days in Hitler's bunker.
*Cain's words "Terminate Adama's command. Starting with Adama" are an homage to Apocalypse Now. Ronald D. Moore briefly toyed with the idea of having her literally say "Terminate with extreme prejudice", but quickly rejected it as too obvious.

Resurrection Ship, Part II
*Vireem and Gage's beating of Tyrol and Helo with bars of soap stuffed inside socks used as slings is an obvious homage to the Stanley Kubrick film Full Metal Jacket, in which a similar thing happens to "Private Pyle" in the Marine barracks at night.

Downloaded
*Sharon wears a brown jacket that seems to be an homage to Warrior uniforms from the original series.
*The Caprica Resistance members led by Samuel Anders refer to humanoid-Cylons as "Skin Jobs," a reference to the classic science fiction film Blade Runner, in which Edward James Olmos also co-starred. The term has been used before in production meetings and is later used in other episodes as well.

Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II
* The Celestra (an electronics ship from TOS) was listed on vote tally boards.

* The tents that comprise most of New Caprica City are military tents, descendants of the tents used in M*A*S*H.

Season Three
Precipice
* Cavil and Ellen Tigh talking about "the twist and the swirl" is a reference to the Seinfeld episode "The Fusilli Jerry".
* The ride to the execution site is nearly a word-for-word homage to a scene from The Great Escape.

Exodus, Part I
*Admiral Adama's claim that his crew "will find immortality as only the Gods once knew" draws on the choice given to Achilles by his mother in Homer's Iliad: fight courageously and perish in battle, or be forgotten by history.

Season One

* The ride to the execution site is nearly a word-for-word homage to a scene from The Great Escape.

Exodus, Part I
*Admiral Adama's claim that his crew "will find immortality as only the Gods once knew" draws on the choice given to Achilles by his mother in Homer's Iliad: fight couragously and perish in battle, or be forgotten by history.

* The tents that comprise most of New Caprica City are military tents, descendents of the tents used in M*A*S*H.

* The ride to the execution site is nearly a word-for-word homage to a scene from The Great Escape.

Exodus, Part I
* (Also seen elsewhere in the series) The photograph pilots touch on entering / leaving the Ready Room is called "Lest We Forget" and shows a Colonial soldier falling to his knees on witnessing the destruction of the capital of Arilon during the Cylon Attack. ===You Can't Go Home Again===
*This episode shares some similarity - although possibly unintentional - with the final Galactica 1980 episode, "The Return of Starbuck," where Starbuck is stranded on a desert moon, and uses a crashed Cylon Raider to return to the Galactica.

Colonial Day
*The controversy surrounding whether Laura Roslin would shake Tom Zarek's hand intentionally mirrored that at the signing of the Oslo Accords in 1993 about whether Yitzhak Rabin would shake hands with Yasser Arafat.

Pegasus
*The character Helena Cain and the battlestar Pegasus are losely based on the Cain and Pegasus from the original series episode "The Living Legend".

Cylon agents are the quintessential Cylon form in the Re-imagined Series. These Cylons mimic human form so completely that they are nearly undetectable to current Colonial technologies.

Cylon agents have the capacity to emulate many human physical acts, including sex. Cylon agents also display convincingly human personalities (affection, jealousy, sadness, anger, sense of humor, religiousness etc.) This behavior continues even when interacting with other Cylons outside of Colonial scrutiny, clearly establishing that their personalities are genuine.

The Cylon agents are responsible for masterminding the complete destruction of the Twelve Colonies through their use of sabotage and infiltration.

Origins
Following the end of the Cylon War (Miniseries), nothing was heard of the Cylons in 40 years.

During their forty years of isolation, the Cylons developed or evolved into a humanoid form.

The creators of the Cylon agent is left to speculation based on series events. While the opening credits claim that the Cylons "evolved," the concept of biological evolution (in the Darwinian fashion) is impossible with mechanical beings. The "evolution" is obviously a planned architectural change from the mechanical to the biomechanical for the inherent Cylon design.

The original Cylon, the Cylon Centurion Model 0005, a sentient robot, is likely to have had a major, if not a sole role in the creation of the agents.

Series information shows that the Cylon agents existed in secret for at least two years prior to the Colonies' destruction. This information does not provide concrete evidence as to when the first models were created and how long they have been among the human population. There is also no evidence as to whether all the 12 models were created at once or whether they were created at different times during the forty year exile.

Physiology and Psychology
Cylon agents are visually indistinguishable with the human form, down to the cellular level, but not completely at a molecular level. Dr. Gaius Baltar is able to create a detector that can distinguish Cylon from human, but rarely used the device to a positive end (Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down).

Each Cylon agent has the same face, stature, hair, eye and skin color, gender, and other biometrics as all the others of his or her model. This point technically makes each copy a twin of itself, but there are some models that choose to make cosmetic differences. Examples include D'anna Biers, Gina and a Number Six model with black hair (Torn). As well, each copy appears to start with the same basic personality, but each personality grows more distinct due to their individual experiences.

Cylon agents can be programmed as 'sleeper agents.' Sleeper agents appear to have a low-level Cylon personality that can conduct operations while placing the human sleeper personality "on-hold." "Boomer" Valerii was one such agent (Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II). Most agent copies, particularly Numbers Five and Six, assume a human persona but are fully aware of their true nature and behave more or less as a human "spy."

Agents are susceptible to the same emotional traumas and clevages that their human counterparts are, further proving that personalities are a realistic part of their psyche. A case in point is a copy of Number Six, known as Gina, who is physically and sexually assaulted repeatedly by the crew of Pegasus. These repeated assaults lead to Gina's near-catatonic state at the time Peagsus discovers the Fleet (Pegasus).

Cylon agents can dream, a process that appears to be natural to the Cylon agent.

Some or all Cylon "female" models may have the capacity to bear children seeded by human males ("33," "Flesh and Bone," "The Hand of God", "Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II"). The Cylons tested numerous methods of sexual reproduction, yet these failed due to a known flaw in the Cylon agent design. Cylon agents cannot reproduce with each other biologically, so in an attempt to subvert this deficiency, they try to interbreed with humans, creating hybrid offspring. "Farms" were apparently set up across all the occupied Colonies where survivors, specifically, young fertile women of child-bearing age, were rounded up, placed under heavy sedation and turned into "baby machines" through artificial insemination. However, this methods have been unsuccessful thus far. Another drastically different approach is taken by attempting to conceive a child through a bond of love. It seems that Helo and Caprica-Valerii's love-child is the lone success story of the relatively short history of Cylon sexual reproduction (The Farm).

The bodies of Cylon agents sometimes appear to have tremendous stamina and strength, and appear to be designed to destroy or resist commonly dangerous human diseases, although they are not immune from all contagions. In keeping with their desire to be a better human, however, the Cylons did not or could not further improve on other characteristic design flaws of the human body. Cylon agents are heavily fortified to resist damage from intense radiation fields that would kill a human after short exposure (The Passage), but apparently they are still susceptible to damage from certain types of radiation or trauma (Miniseries). Despite their resistance to certain forms of energy, Cylon agents, unlike the Cylon Centurion, cannot be made "bulletproof" ("Precipice," "Hero").

The majority of the Cylons follow a monotheistic religion (with the possible exception of the Cavil model, which appears to be an atheist).

Cybernetic Behavior
Upon the death of an agent's body, a Cylon agent transfers its consciousness into another copy of itself. This "resurrection" is limited by distance, signal integrity, and proximity to the Cylon homeworld or a Resurrection Ship (Miniseries, "Flesh and Bone," "Resurrection Ship, Part II").

It appears that all Cylon agents share a collective knowledgebase of data from other active or deactivated Cylon agents, regardless of their model.

The psychology of Cylon agents is based on what they simply refer to as "projection." Essentially an enhanced form of a self-induced and controlled hallucination, projection is how they choose to see the world around them, in any form they wish, whenever they wish. For example, if a Cylon were standing in a hallway, they could choose to see it as a forest filled with birds, trees, and sunlight. This mode of visualization is pleasing to agents (Torn).

Although they cannot do so remotely or wirelessly, Cylon agents can interface with a computer system or computer network by photo-optical means. They can perform this through subdermal physical contact if required or, preferably, through a Cylon data port.

<div style="clear: both;"></div>

Known Cylon Agent Models
There are twelve models of Cylon agents (Miniseries), representing twelve personality archetypes that the Cylons have witnessed in humanity. All seven models revealed to the viewers as Cylon agents have also been revealed to the central Colonial characters as of the episode, "Collaborators." The identities of the final five remaining Cylon agent models are unknown to both humanity and the seven known models.

There are many copies of each model, although the specific number of each copy (or the number of individual personalities that inhabit them) has not been specified. There appears to be no significance to any of the specific numbers assigned to the different Cylon agents, although Number Three did refer to Boomer (Eight) as "little sister" upon her download (Downloaded).

Number Three
First seen posing as a reporter from the Fleet News Service, this model was revealed to be a Cylon to viewers at the end of "Final Cut" when a second copy was shown living on Caprica. Threes seem to be the most calculating and duplicitous models shown to-date, even manupulating and deceiving other models if they feel warranted. The copy that tried to box Sharon Valerii exhibited these characteristics strongly in the episode, "Downloaded."

This model's status as a Cylon is unknown to the Colonials until either shortly after the rescue of the surviving members of the Caprica Resistance (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II), or after the Cylon occupation of New Caprica (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II.)

A copy of this model has appeared under the name/alias "D'anna Biers."
<div style="clear: both;"></div>

Number Five
This model attempts to sow the seeds of discontent or confusion, particularly during crucial life-threatening situations, and endeavors to undermine authority that threatens his objectives (Miniseries). Number Five models are more covert, assuming an ordinary "everyman" appearance that's blended in what may seem to be insignificant behind-the-scenes issues (such as converting Galactica into a museum). Of all the models thus far, the Number Five models are the most militant, fanatic and consistent in message and objectives to the Cylon objectives, whether he is dispassionately discussing the fate of humanity with his comrades or attempting to kill or maim Colonials in a suicide bomb attack (Litmus).

Viewers first meet a Number Five during a tour of Galactica with other Colonial citizens (possibly the press) as we see the battlestar for the first time at the start of the Miniseries. Viewers aren't sure of Cylon's true identity until the Miniseries' conclusion.

Copies of this model have appeared under the name/alias "Aaron Doral."
<div style="clear: both;"></div>

Number Six
This is the first Cylon agent model shown to viewers at the start of the Miniseries.

This model utilizes the human need / desire for sexual relations to her advantage. She tends to be very religious and monotheistic. Model 6 desires to know what it is to be alive. There is something inherently enigmatic about her, more so than with the other models. Sixes have been described as "usually so hardcore", referring to their tendencies towards violence.

Typically she is the alpha female, as demonstrated on multiple occasions (Miniseries, 33, Water, Six Degrees of Separation).

Copies of this model have appeared under the names/aliases "Shelly Godfrey" , "Gina", and "Caprica" (in honor of her work on Caprica towards the destruction of the Colonies).

<div style="clear: both;"></div>

Number Eight
Number Eight is generally a saboteur designed to infiltrate Colonial military units and is likely programmed to use any Colonial munitions to cause havoc (Water). The Number Eight model is the closest witnessed Cylon agent model to show its abilities as a soldier. This model has shown naiveté in many matters. She is apparently not as religious as other Cylon models, but has demonstrated that she can love, and is capable of being impregnated by a human (Six Degrees of Separation, Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II).

She may be "defective", as the Cylon programming within the sleeper agent known as "Boomer" on Galactica conflicts multiple times with its human personality (Water). Also, the fully aware Sharon Valerii found by Helo on Caprica switches alliances from Cylon to Colonial after falling in love with Helo and aids the Colonials for a time (several episodes, most notably "Flight of the Phoenix"). Number Eight is the third Cylon agent introduced during the Miniseries. However, viewers do not discover her true identity until the very end of the Miniseries when a second copy of Sharon Valerii appears at Ragnar Anchorage while retrieving an abandoned copy of Number Five.

Copies of this model have appeared under the name "Sharon Valerii." One copy, Sharon Agathon, has defected from the Cylon and has joined the Colonial Fleet, generally replacing her "Boomer" counterpart as a Raptor pilot.
<div style="clear: both;"></div>

Leoben Conoy
Leoben Conoy (Cylon agent model number unknown) was the fourth model witnessed by viewers (although viewers would not know until the end of the Miniseries that they had already seen the third introduced Cylon agent, Sharon Valerii). The Conoy model has shown to be religiously oriented and claims to be prescient on some level, using dogma and intermixing truth with falsehoods. It was first discovered on Ragnar Station, claiming to be a scavenger / arms dealer (Miniseries).

The Conoy models also appear obsessed with matters of mating, bonding, and reproduction, as demonstrated by a particular agent's fascination and obsession with Kara Thrace ("Flesh and Bone," "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II," "Occupation," "Precipice," and "Exodus, Part II").

Conoy can be likened to the serpent of the Genesis tale in the Earth Christian Bible, taunting people with knowledge then watching as the negative consequences come into devastating fruition. Leoben copies have likely been encountered by the Caprica Resistance, as Samuel Anders recites in jest some comments made by another Leoben copy captured in the Fleet (Flesh and Bone, The Farm).
<div style="clear: both;"></div>

Simon
The Simon model (Cylon agent model number unknown) was encountered by Kara "Starbuck" Thrace on Cylon-occupied Caprica. Posing as a doctor, Simon was actually involved with the Cylon hybridization program. Simon resembles a tall, somewhat thin middle-aged black man who speaks in a comforting strong voice (The Farm) Unlike other models, Simon doesn't seem to have many military aspects to his physical or mental configuration, and was easily overcome by a wounded Thrace. Simon may be a model based primarily on human intellectualism and logic. Simon is the only model out of the seven that has not as of yet been seen as an infiltrator in The Fleet.
<div style="clear: both;"></div>

Cavil
The Cavil models (Cylon agent model number unknown) posed as cynical Colonial priests in the Fleet.

Cavil models do not subscribe to the theology of the Cylon, but usually adhere to the party lines in group decisions.

In several instances, the Cavils display dark, draconian solutions to the insurgency on New Caprica that equal the militant zeal of Numbers Three and Five.
<div style="clear: both;"></div>

Speculated Infiltrators
:See the Cylon agent speculation article for analysis on characters and their likelihood of being a Cylon agent, based on episode information.

Human/Cylon Hybrids
Conceived by the Eight believed to be Sharon Valerii and Helo, the infant Hera is the first and only known human/Cylon hybrid.

For some time Hera was hidden away from both humans and Cylons, and believed to be dead by her parents. President Laura Roslin had the baby hidden with Maya as her adoptive parent. Despite Roslin's attempts to protect the child on New Caprica, Hera is now in the hands of the Cylons (Exodus, Part II).

A child, Kacey, is presented by a Conoy model to Kara Thrace as an hybrid offspring purportedly created with her genetic material in the episode "Occupation". The Cylons' ruse is revealed when Kacey's human mother later claims the child (Exodus, Part II).

Ron Moore elaborates on the twelve models
In a 10/24/05 interview on "The Chase Show" on the SF webcast news site TheFandom.com with veteran "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" actress Chase Masterson, Ron D. Moore is interviewed and directly answers two key questions in the Twelve Models debate and the origin of Sharon Valerii in particular. Here is a transcription of that interview segment.

:Chase: ... I just have to ask something... is there one Boomer that's just human?
:Ron: No, there's not. I mean, the idea is not there was one like an original human model that they were copied from. The idea was that these were... these models of Cylon were developed out of their own study of us. The Cylons on some level looked at humanity and said, "Well, you know what, there's really only twelve of you... and these are the twelve." And then if you look at them, they kind of represent different archetypes of what humanity is. Um, Sharon, in particular &mdash; Sharon-Boomer, went through quite a trans-metamorphosis because in the original Miniseries script, in the first draft, she wasn't a Cylon at all. She was going to be just &mdash; I wrote her just &mdash; I wanted a youngish pilot, who was the rookie, who was sort of vulnerable in ways, who made mistakes in ways that you're not used to seeing your heroes on TV shows do, and I was really interested in this idea of the officer, the female officer in love with the male deck chief in violation of all the rules and I kinda thought, going forward, that she and the chief, in combination with Boxey, who's really only in the Miniseries and one or two other episodes, would form sort of our family unit, that that was kind of a family...
:Chase: OK...
:Ron: ... and actually, after that first draft was written, it was David Eick, my producing partner, who said, "You know what, if at the end of this thing, at the very end when all the Cylons walk into Armistice &mdash; into the Ragnar station at the end... if you turn around and Sharon is one of the Cylons, he said, we're definitely gonna get picked up for a series.
:Chase: (laughs) OK... that did make... that really did seal the deal...
:Ron: ... and I just really went... that's a great idea and I realized that, because I'd had laid... I had written a story straight, I really hadn't cheated. There was no hint of who Sharon might be, and it really did suck you in, and really sort of, you believed her as a person first, and then we revealed her as a Cylon.
:Chase: ... Right....
:Ron: ... And so what happened after that was, I assumed going into the first season &mdash; well I didn't assume, I just planned... to slowly, over the course of the first year, peel back the layers &mdash; that Sharon would only start to sort of discover her Cylon nature by the end of the first year.
:Chase: Oh, God... and it was heartbreaking, watching that unfold, because I loved her much as human, and she was just adorable, with him and then with the kid, it was like, oh, what a great girl, she's um... you know, young and cute, and &mdash; who's the actress &mdash; and that whole thing, and then you're like, WHAT?
:Ron: Yeah...
:Chase: ... She's the enemy...
:Ron: I know then, she's the enemy, then she's the one that is your most worry, what's she gonna do next.
:Chase: Yeah. You really took us on quite a journey there. I was still hoping for a human one running around somewhere, but no, huh?....
:Ron: No.
:Chase: Oh, well...

With this information from the show's central creative leader, it is established as canon that:

* There are precisely twelve human Cylon models. The other varieties of Cylon spacecraft or fighters are not factored into this count of 12 models.
* None of the Cylon agents were ever an actual human.
* The twelve models are based on on archetypes determined by the Cylons that form what they perceive were the specific kinds of human behavior and/or personality, distilled into twelve varieties.

Notes
* A Cylon Centurion can not differentiate the differing versions of one model from another (Precipice). For example, if faced with two differing number eight models, Sharon "Boomer" Valerii and Sharon Agathon, it would not be able to discriminate between them without external aid.
* While Centurions may not be able to tell the difference between different versions of the same model, other Cylon agents do not have this problem ("Downloaded", "Exodus, Part I", "The Eye of Jupiter").
* According to Cavil in "Exodus, Part I", the pain associated with each successive download is worse than the one before. The first download feels like little more than a headache, but the third feels like someone has rushed a white hot poker through the head. However, this might be a subjective feeling that varies with model and circumstances. Sharon Agathon's report in "Scar" supports Cavil, but a Number Three considers her last download to be rejuvenating (Downloaded).
* In "Torn" Caprica-Six mentions that the Cylons do not talk about the final five Cylon agents. In the same episode Gaius Baltar confirms that during his term as President on occupied New Caprica and on the basestar he is on, he only saw the first seven models.

Leoben Conoy is a Cylon agent first encountered at Ragnar Anchorage. He fancies himself as a prophet with predilections for enlightened monotheistic religious dogma, whereas he is more likely to sow the seeds of doubt or mis-information, weaving lies in the fabric of truth and faith.

__TOC__
Ragnar Anchorage Copy
Conoy is first encountered at the Ragnar Anchorage, where he poses as an arms dealer. It is likely that he was assigned with the monitoring of this depot station as the war began, gaining intelligence on battlestars that visited there. Alternatively, he may have been tasked with stealing away or destroying the ammunition (or the station itself) to prevent its use by the Colonials.

Conoy is already sick from the radiation around Ragnar, suggesting he had been there for several hours before Galactica's arrival.

Conoy becomes trapped aboard the station with Commander Adama after a warhead is accidentally detonated. As they try to find another way out of the station, Leoben reveals his true nature to Adama through conversation, initially by claiming to be something of a philosopher. Identifying Conoy as a Cylon on the point of death, Adama challenges him and learns of the Cylon's ability to transfer their consciousness to another body when dying. Only Leoben can't -- the radiation of Ragnar is interfering with his ability.

A fight ensues, during which Leoben exhibits unnatural strength and speed. Adama manages to kill Conoy by forcing his head over an outventing steam pipe then bludgeoning him to death with a flashlight. He then brings Leoben's body back to Galactica for examination. Samples from this body, when burned, revealed synthetic materials -- which permitted Adama, Colonel Tigh and Dr. Gaius Baltar to deduce that Cylons could mimic humans in appearance (Miniseries).

The body is later stored in the ship's morgue (Flesh and Bone).

Later, three copies of Leoben are among the group of Cylons that rescue Aaron Doral, abandoned on Ragnar by the Colonials after Dr. Baltar fingers him as a Cylon agent, and debrief him.

Gemenon Traveller Copy
Conoy is again encountered when a copy is found apparently stowing away aboard the Gemenon Traveller. Knowing the model's ability to weave fact, fiction and outright lies into a confusing fabric of truth, half-truths and deceit, Adama wants the copy destroyed. However, he is overruled by President Roslin, who demands the model be interrogated.

Lieutenant Kara "Starbuck" Thrace is assigned to interrogate Conoy aboard the Gemenon Traveller. Over the course of eight hours, Conoy demonstrates his ability to confuse and mix truth with lies: he claims to have planted a nuclear device somewhere in the fleet, but will not reveal where. He also mixes what appears to be religious mumbo-jumbo with penetrating insights into Colonial philosophy and Starbuck's own past (Flesh and Bone).

While she resorts to ever-more drastic measures to obtain details on the alleged bomb's location, Starbuck finds herself being drawn into Leoben's vision of life. So much so that when Roslin orders his execution, Starbuck very much empathises with him.

Prior to his death, Conoy reveals there is no bomb, and uses a reason suggested by Starbuck in the initial stages of his interrogation: that since he is so far from other Cylon centers of influence, he cannot transmit his "soul" back to home should his body die. However, the real purpose of his mission is revealed when President Roslin arrives aboard the Traveller and he manages to whisper to her that Adama is in fact a Cylon -- thus planting a potentially dangerous seed of doubt between her and Adama.

Convinced now of the danger in keeping Conoy alive, Roslin orders him ejected from the Traveller's airlock.

Interestingly, Roslin had a premonition of Conoy's surfacing in the fleet when she had a dream about him at the time he is captured. Later, in her cabin on Colonial One, she has a vision of him talking to her which prompts her decision to visit him in person - thus allowing him to complete his mission.

At the time of the dream and the vision, Roslin assumes that both are the result of her using Chamalla to treat her cancer. However, both may have been the result of some form of psychic ability on the part of Conoy or Roslin. One last such incident is the correct fortelling by Leoben that the Fleet would eventually find the legendary homeworld of Kobol, home of the Gods and birthplace of mankind, although he might have simply extrapolated that from the Fleet's course.

New Caprica Copy
During the Cylon invasion of New Caprica a Conoy copy slips into Kara Thrace and Samuel Anders' tent and asks the ailing Anders where Thrace is (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II).

This Conoy copy kidnaps Thrace and holds her in an apartment located within the Cylon complex built in New Caprica City, shortly after the Cylon occupation of New Caprica.

Though never directly stated, it is heavily implied that this Conoy is the same Cylon previously interrogated and tortured by Thrace (Flesh and Bone). Ostensibly, the New Caprica copy of Conoy attempts to befriend her with food and politeness in a reverse-Pygmalion attempt to appease her, and perhaps to convert her to the Cylon monotheistic religion.

Conoy's attempts initially fail, and painfully. Thrace refuses his kindnesses and assaults and kills Conoy at least five times. Conoy returns each time, patiently resuming his attempts at appealing to Thrace (Occupation).

Conoy takes a dramatic tactical change and introduces Thrace to Kacey, a young child appearing to be two years old. He claims that Kacey is his and Thrace's biological daughter, created using his genetic material and one of Thrace's ovaries recovered from the ruins of the farm she was held in on Caprica. Whatever the truth of Kacey's origin, Conoy successfully uses the child to break down Thrace's resistance after the child suffers an accident that Thrace blames herself for. The Cylon surprisingly finds Thrace taking hold of his hand at Kacey's hospital bedside (Precipice).

During the Battle of New Caprica, he leaves to presumably help in the attack and is forced to knock out Thrace after she attempts to find out what is going on. Kara later returns to the apartment to find Kacey, and Conoy appears with Kacey. He uses Kara's frantic desire to take Kacey during the evacuation to force her to say she loves him, which she reluctantly complies. They kiss for several moments as Conoy is unaware of the knife Kara acquired earlier. She stabs him in the stomach and kills him one final time as he collapses on the floor.

Despite Kara's bond to Kacey, it turns out the girl was simply a human child kidnapped on New Caprica. Kara discovers this when Kacey's rightful mother claims her aboard Galactica. (Exodus, Part II).

Other Copies
Apparently the Caprica Resistance captured and interrogated their own copy of Conoy, as Samuel Anders sarcastically quotes his philosophy to Kara Thrace (Resistance). This is speculation, of course.

A Leoben or two are witnessed in the background of the park and cafe scenes in "Downloaded"; however, these are played by a stand-in as Calum Keith Rennie was unavailable for the episode.

Several Leobens are seen on the Cylon baseship that Gaius Baltar wakes up on shortly after he and the Cylons flee from New Caprica. Caprica-Six tells Baltar that his model believes the hybrid model who controls the baseship is speaking the "words of God" in her endlessly incoherent diagnostic babble (Torn).

Another Leoben was recovered from the infected baseship by Galactica. He was going to be part of their plan to infect the entire Cylon race with the virus spawned from the 13th Colony probe. However, he and the other Cylons captured by the Galactica were executed by Karl Agathon before they were within download range of a Resurrection Ship (A Measure of Salvation).

At the standoff between Galactica and several basestars; a Leoben states that the Temple of Five and Eye of Jupiter are far too important to be risked over the testing of Adama's bluff to nuke the planet
(The Eye of Jupiter).

Notes
* Laura Roslin inadvertently referred to him as "Leoben ConROY" during "Flesh and Bone," which had to be edited when it was used as a sound bite in an intro segment in a subsequent episode.

*Conoy is the name of a township in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
Specter, an older IL-series Cylon, demonstrates despicable traits of (and including) thievery, dishonesty and deceptiveness.

His forces manage to occupy the entire marsh-like planet of Antilla, but is constantly attacked by Megan's children -- Kyle, Miri, Ariadne, Robus and Nilz. When Starbuck is forced into a controlled crash-landing on Antilla, he is almost taken to Specter, however the family-turned-military force waylays the Cylon force.

Specter manages to mislead Lord Baltar into believing that they had managed to capture the warrior, who he conveniently leaves nameless. As attempts to get the warrior by force remain fruitless, an agreement is arranged by Kyle to trade Megan's life for Starbuck's. Specter attempts to deceive Megan's children by floating a manufactured dummy while the children send over the same in place of Starbuck. This forces Specter to continue leading Baltar upon a string.

Lucifer, Baltar's newer IL-series cogitator, despises the lower grade Cylon and attempts to undermine Specter's attempts to curry Baltar's favor. Lucifer manages to come across uncomplimentary requisition orders for additional war material, even though the planet is supposedly under complete control. Specter manages to, yet again, mislead Baltar, and even compel Baltar to sympathize for the Cylon's plight on Antilla; the Cylons do not fare well on marsh planets due to oxidation.

After a successful and embarrassing attack by Megan's children and Starbuck, Specter again deceives Baltar into believing, not that the garrison had come under attack, but that the commotion was due to his Cylons destroying "the last of the human habitations." Specter manages to secure a place aboard Baltar's basestar so that he can later be reassigned wherever the Imperious Leader needed such experienced hands (The Young Lords).

*A specter is a type of demon from folklore that is of ghostly or evil nature, also spelled "spectre" in the British-English vernacular. Both spellings are pronounced the same, however.
*This naming of the IL-series units supports the theory by Joe Beaudoin that all IL-series Cylons are somehow named after a creature or some evil figure from collective histories of Mankind, as shown in the series.
