Discovery
Lt. Margaret "Racetrack" Edmondson discovers the planet later known as New Caprica after her Raptor accidently jumps to the wrong coordinates while on a rescue mission to Caprica. Ground surveys reveal that New Caprica is a cold world with a harsh climate, and that only about 20% of the surface - a small temperate band around the equator - is habitable. The planet is located in a solar system surrounded by a dense nebula. The nebula renders DRADIS all but useless, which makes the planet strategically appealing as it theoretically would protect the planet from Cylon detection.

Excited by her discovery, Edmondson returns to the battlestar Pegasus with information and sensor readings on the planet. The mere prospect of setting foot on a planet causes great excitement amongst the Fleet quickly dividing it into two factions - those who wish to stop running from the Cylons and colonize the planet, and those that do not.

Colonization
President Laura Roslin writes off colonization as unrealistic, given the harsh climate. However, the discovery of New Caprica happens to coincide with the impending presidential election (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I). Presidential candidate Gaius Baltar and running mate Tom Zarek seize upon colonization as their wedge issue, offering the Fleet the prospect of settlement under the presumption that Cylon technology will be unable to penetrate the nebula. Roslin disagrees with this assessment, but the majority of the travel- and war-weary survivors of the Fleet find the idea of colonizing the planet enticing. Baltar and Zarek win a decisive mandate, and Laura Roslin is voted out of office. President Baltar's first executive order is to begin settlement, bringing an end to the Fleet's search for the planet Earth (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II).

Shortly after Baltar's inauguration a nuclear warhead, smuggled off of Galactica, is detonated aboard and destroys Cloud 9, a ship that is part of the fleet orbiting New Caprica. This incident will later have a devastating impact on the human settlers of New Caprica.

One Year Later
The population of New Caprica is concentrated in a small settlement called New Caprica City. The climate proves unforgiving, and there are major shortages of medical supplies and basic living materials - more than a year after colonization, most of the population continues to live in canvas tents. A small number of grounded ships also serve as living quarters. Many among the population of New Caprica City, including Galen Tyrol and the workers' union which he leads, blame President Baltar and his lack of leadership for the majority of economic and social problems facing the settlers on New Caprica (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II).

Just over a year after colonization, the population of New Caprica City is 39,192 (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II). A small group of around 2,000 civilians remain in orbit in those ships incapable of making planetfall (Occupation).

Cylon Occupation
Three hundred and eighty days after settlement, the Cylons discover New Caprica after detecting and then tracing the radiation signature of the nuclear warhead detonated on Cloud 9 and jump into New Caprica's orbit with a fleet of basestars. Galactica and Pegasus, in orbit above the planet, are caught by surprise and vastly outnumbered. With both ships at half strength, commander Lee Adama pursuades admiral William Adama to jump away from New Caprica with the other few ships orbiting the planet. Admiral Adama promises to return.

On the planet, President Baltar is confronted by a Cylon delegation consisting of Caprica Six, Sharon "Boomer" Valerii and a copy of Number Five. Left with no choice, Baltar surrenders to the Cylons on behalf of what remains of the human race, now trapped on New Caprica (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II).

The Cylon forces are initially led by Caprica Six and Boomer under the sincere intention of establishing peace between the Cylons and the human race. However, they quickly lose their influence to the more militaristic Cylon models (Precipice, Exodus, Part II). The Cylons become an occupying force on New Caprica, with President Baltar and his staff reduced to a puppet administration controlled by Cylon rule. Vice President Tom Zarek refuses to cooperate and is sent to a detention center (Precipice).

A band of human resistance fighters, regarded by the Cylon-occupiers as insurgents, begin to strike back against the Cylons. The resistance is significantly aided by an unknown, inside source that passes them classified information, allowing the resistance to wreak considerable havoc on the Cylons. This leads to the formation of The New Caprica Police (NCP), humans who volunteer to work for the Cylon authority. The New Caprica Police are regarded with both disgust and disdain by the majority of the planet’s human civilization. Considered to be Cylon collaborators, the NCP are forced to wear black ski masks to hide their identies in an attempt to protect themselves from human reprisal.

The Battle of New Caprica and the Second Exodus
Based on a contigency plan developed prior to colonization by Saul Tigh and William Adama, a Raptor is deployed from the hiding battlestars and regularly jumps into New Caprica's orbit in an attempt to contact the humans left behind. Concealed from Cylon detection by the nebula, the Raptor establishes contact with the resistance movement. With communication realized, Adama and his military personnel devise a plan to evacuate the human prisoners. However, the plan's success hinges on the retrieval of the planet-bound ships' launch keys. Confiscated by the Cylons, these keys are necessary to activate the FTL drives on the grounded ships.

Admiral Adama deploys a two-Raptor team led by newly commissioned Sharon Agathon that covertly lands on New Caprica and successfully establishes contact with the resistance. Agathon is able to locate and retrieve the hidden launch keys while pretending to be a different copy of her Cylon model (Precipice) and they are secretly returned to their respective ships (Exodus, Part II). With the rescue attempt now under way, Pegasus Commander Lee Adama is ordered to provide escort protection for the hiding fleet to a pre-arranged location where they will rendevous with Galactica if the rescue mission is successful, or continue the search for Earth alone if it is not. Admiral Adama then jumps Galactica to New Caprica. Once in orbit, Galacticas Raptors deploy decoys, creating illusory targets that trick the Cylon's into believing they are chasing the two battlestars, scattering their fleet of basestars. Adama takes advantage of the Cylon's confusion by jumping Galactica directly into New Caprica's lower atmosphere, deploying Blue Squadron and then jumping back into higher orbit. With Blue Squadron providing air cover, resistance fighters begin attacks on Cylon ground forces, liberate the New Caprica Detention Center and chaperone civilians to their designated ships which begin to launch and jump to the rendevous point.

Back in orbit above New Caprica, a badly damaged Galactica is surrounded by four basestars. Adama, unable to jump away and without enough time to fix the ship's damaged FTL drive, resigns himself to defeat. At this moment, Commander Lee Adama, having ignored his father's order, arrives with Pegasus and diverts the Cylon attack on Galactica to his own ship. Galactica's crew is able to repair the ship's FTL drive, and upon the successful return of the ship's Viper squadron, escapes to the rendezvous point.

Pegasus, having left its vipers to guard the escaping ships at the rendevous point, is left with no fighter cover. The battlestar is mortally damaged and Commander Adama and his skeleton crew are forced to abandon the ship. Boarding Raptors, they escape to the rendezvous point. Pegasus is sent on a collision course with one of the remaining basestars. The resulting explosion destroys another of the basestars.

Aftermath
While the rescue mission is considered a success, approximately 2,000 humans die during the operation and the preceding four month long occupation.

Casualties include Tucker "Duck" Clellan, one of Galactica's best Viper pilots who is driven to despair by the murder of his wife, Nora (Battlestar Galactica: The Resistance), and conducts a suicide attack on the NCP (Occupation); Ellen Tigh, who is poisoned by her husband for collaborating with the Cylons; and Maya, who is killed while attempting to board her escape ship with her adopted baby daughter, the human/Cylon hybrid Hera. The child survives, but without the protection of her mother is left behind and recovered by the Cylons. Knowing he cannot escape with the rest of the human population Gaius Baltar elects to leave with the Cylons, at the invitation of Number Three copy D'anna Biers.

With the humans gone, and with their possession and control of the hybrid-child finally realized, the Cylons see no strategic or logical reason to remain on the planet. It is assumed that like the humans they abandon New Caprica.
Flight of the Phoenix
<blockquote>The events of this episode likely occur over several weeks with the construction of the Blackbird, and it was designed to have a vague timeline per the episode podcast. However, In "The Farm," Commander Adama gives Cally Henderson a 30 day sentence on Day 61, the same day he resumes command of the Fleet. It is likely that Henderson's release marks day 91. Precise date stamping is problematic regarding most other events outlined in the episode.</blockquote>
Resurrection Ship, Part I
*Day ~175:
Downloaded
<blockquote>The originally aired episode contained an error in the form of a second time stamp title card which said "ten weeks ago" refereing to Boomer's death and resurrection, which placed the events of the previous episode, "Resistance," ten weeks prior. This was corrected to "ten weeks later" for the DVD release and subsequent airings, dating Boomer's death ten weeks after "Zero Hour", the attack on the Colonies. However, even this date may be incorrect for Boomer was killed on approximately day 53, which is just over 7.5 weeks from Zero Hour, not ten. While these inconsistencies within the episode makes the time of events problematic, given what was established before with the downloading process i.e. if not automatic it happens within a few hours at most, and even taking into account the flawed dates, Caprica Six and Boomer where resurrected well before the birth of Hera Agathon.</blockquote>
*Day 1 (Flashback Zero Hour: Caprica Six is killed in a nuclear blast wave (Miniseries)):
**Caprica-Six is resurrected
*Day 53 (Flashback: Cally Henderson kills Sharon "Boomer" Valerii (Resistance)):
**Boomer is resurrected
*Precise dates to be determined:
**A Number Three "D'anna Biers" unit tasked Caprica-Six to help Boomer adjust to her Cylon nature.
**Caprica-Six and Boomer resolve to persuade the Cylons to adopt a new approach in dealing with the Colonials.
*Day 270:
**Hera Agathon born, approximately one month premature
**President Roslin, in secret from Admiral Adama, has Hera's death faked and the child hidden as an adoption by Maya.

Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I
<blockquote>Tom Zarek states that the Fleet has been "cooped up in metal boxes for nine months" the morning after the in this episode. This date is roughly taken as Day 270, with an implied give-or-take of a couple weeks. The surrounding events noted above can, however, be placed relative to this point with a good degree of certainty based on episode dialogue.</blockquote>

Leoben Conoy is a Cylon agent first encountered at Ragnar Anchorage. He fancies himself as a prophet with predilections for enlightened monotheistic religious dogma, whereas he is more likely to sow the seeds of doubt or mis-information, weaving lies in the fabric of truth and faith.

__TOC__
Ragnar Anchorage Copy
Conoy is first encountered at the Ragnar Anchorage, where he poses as an arms dealer. It is likely that he was assigned with the monitoring of this depot station as the war began, gaining intelligence on battlestars that visited there. Alternatively, he may have been tasked with stealing away or destroying the ammunition (or the station itself) to prevent its use by the Colonials.

Conoy is already sick from the radiation around Ragnar, suggesting he had been there for several hours before Galactica's arrival.

Conoy becomes trapped aboard the station with Commander Adama after a warhead is accidentally detonated. As they try to find another way out of the station, Leoben reveals his true nature to Adama through conversation, initially by claiming to be something of a philosopher. Identifying Conoy as a Cylon on the point of death, Adama challenges him and learns of the Cylon's ability to transfer their consciousness to another body when dying. Only Leoben can't -- the radiation of Ragnar is interfering with his ability.

A fight ensues, during which Leoben exhibits unnatural strength and speed. Adama manages to kill Conoy by forcing his head over an outventing steam pipe then bludgeoning him to death with a flashlight. He then brings Leoben's body back to Galactica for examination. Samples from this body, when burned, revealed synthetic materials -- which permitted Adama, Colonel Tigh and Dr. Gaius Baltar to deduce that Cylons could mimic humans in appearance (Miniseries).

The body is later stored in the ship's morgue (Flesh and Bone).

Later, three copies of Leoben are among the group of Cylons that rescue Aaron Doral, abandoned on Ragnar by the Colonials after Dr. Baltar fingers him as a Cylon agent, and debrief him.

Gemenon Traveller Copy
Conoy is again encountered when a copy is found apparently stowing away aboard the Gemenon Traveller. Knowing the model's ability to weave fact, fiction and outright lies into a confusing fabric of truth, half-truths and deceit, Adama wants the copy destroyed. However, he is overruled by President Roslin, who demands the model be interrogated.

Lieutenant Kara "Starbuck" Thrace is assigned to interrogate Conoy aboard the Gemenon Traveller. Over the course of eight hours, Conoy demonstrates his ability to confuse and mix truth with lies: he claims to have planted a nuclear device somewhere in the fleet, but will not reveal where. He also mixes what appears to be religious mumbo-jumbo with penetrating insights into Colonial philosophy and Starbuck's own past (Flesh and Bone).

While she resorts to ever-more drastic measures to obtain details on the alleged bomb's location, Starbuck finds herself being drawn into Leoben's vision of life. So much so that when Roslin orders his execution, Starbuck very much empathises with him.

Prior to his death, Conoy reveals there is no bomb, and uses a reason suggested by Starbuck in the initial stages of his interrogation: that since he is so far from other Cylon centers of influence, he cannot transmit his "soul" back to home should his body die. However, the real purpose of his mission is revealed when President Roslin arrives aboard the Traveller and he manages to whisper to her that Adama is in fact a Cylon -- thus planting a potentially dangerous seed of doubt between her and Adama.

Convinced now of the danger in keeping Conoy alive, Roslin orders him ejected from the Traveller's airlock.

Interestingly, Roslin had a premonition of Conoy's surfacing in the fleet when she had a dream about him at the time he was captured. Later, in her cabin on Colonial One, she had a vision of him talking to her which prompted her decision to visit him in person - thus allowing him to complete his mission.

At the time of the dream and the vision, Roslin assumed both were the result of her using Chamalla to treat her cancer. However, both may have been the result of some form of psychic ability on the part of Conoy.

New Caprica Copy
During the Cylon invasion of New Caprica a Conoy copy slips into Kara Thrace and Samuel Anders' tent and asks the ailing Anders where Thrace is (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II).

This Conoy copy kidnaps Thrace and holds in an apartment located within the Cylon complex built in New Caprica City, shortly after the Cylon occupation of New Caprica.

Though never directly stated, it is heavily implied that this Conoy is the same Cylon previously interrogated and tortured by Thrace (Flesh and Bone). Ostensibly, the New Caprica copy of Conoy attempts to befriend her with food and politeness in a reverse-Pygmalion attempt of appeasing her, and perhaps converting her to the Cylon monotheistic religion.

Conoy's attempts initially fail, and painfully. Thrace refuses his kindnesses and assaults and kills Conoy at least five times. Conoy returns each time, patiently resuming his attempts at appealing to Thrace (Occupation).

Conoy takes a dramatic tactical change and introduces Thrace to Kacey, a young child appearing to be two years old. He claims that Kacey is the biological child of both him and Thrace, created using one of Thrace's ovaries, recovered from the ruins of the farm she was held in on Caprica, and his genetic material. Whatever the truth of Kacey's origin, Conoy successfully uses the child to break down Thrace's resistance after the child suffers an accident that Thrace blames herself for. The Cylon surprisingly finds Thrace taking hold of his hand at Kacey's hospital bedside (Precipice).

During the Battle of New Caprica, he leaves to presumably help in the attack and is forced to knock out Thrace after she attempts to find out what is going on. Kara later returns to the apartment to find Kacey and Conoy appears with Kacey. He uses Kara's frantic desire to take Kacey during the evacuation to force her to say she loves him, which she reluctantly complies. They kiss for several moments as Conoy is unaware of the knife Kara aquirred earlier. She stabs him in the stomach and kills him one final time as he collapses on the floor.

Despite Kara's bond to Kacey, it turns out the girl was simply a human child kidnapped on New Caprica. Kara discovers this when Kacey's rightful mother claims her aboard Galactica. (Exodus, Part II).

Other Copies
Apparently the Caprica Resistance captured and interrogated their own copy of Conoy, as Samuel Anders sarcastically quotes his philosophy to Kara Thrace (Resistance). This is speculation, of course.

A Leoben or two are witnessed in the background of the park and cafe scenes in "Downloaded"; however, these are played by a stand-in as Calum Keith Rennie was unavailable for the episode.

Several Leobens are seen on the Cylon baseship that Gaius Baltar wakes up on shortly after he and the Cylons flee from New Caprica. Caprica-Six tells Baltar that his model believes the hybrid model who controls the baseship is speaking the "words of God" in her endlessly incoherent diagnostic babble (Torn).

Another Leoben was recovered from the infected baseship by Galactica. He was going to be part of their plan to infect the entire Cylon race with the virus spawned from the 13th Colony probe. However, he and the other Cylons captured by the Galactica were executed by Karl Agathon before they were within download range of a Resurrection Ship (A Measure of Salvation).

At the standoff between Galactica and several basestars; a Leoben states that the Temple of Five and Eye of Jupiter are far too important to be risked over the testing of Adama's bluff to nuke the planet
(The Eye of Jupiter).

Notes
* Laura Roslin inadvertently referred to him as "Leoben ConROY" during "Flesh and Bone," which had to be edited when it was used as a sound bite in an intro segment in a subsequent episode.

*Conoy is the name of a township in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
