: Here's the thing though... is Katee counting "Razor" as one episode? If so, then that makes "Revelations" episode 11, by her count. Also, about 4.13... it seems that there are only 10 episodes "in the can", as far as I can determine. Also, production numbers can be taken out of order; it's happened before to series such as ''Babylon 5'' and even the original BSG. So, 4.13... Is ''that'' episode 11, or is that part of episode 10, which may be extended? Plus we have two missing episodes that are unaccounted for, 4.07 and 4.09.
Since the episode apparently has an [http://syfyportal.com/news425104.html advance screening] tomorrow, maybe we should lock the article. I vaguely I recall that a similar screening resulted in the episode summary or analysis to be written. That's not so bad, but we have no way to verify the stuff. Plus, I don't think we should spoil it for everyone just because a handful of people have seen the episode already. :Yes, this is weird. Are there any major characters anywhere else? I mean, there are three Cylon models + Boomer in the Cylon fleet but they're not exactly good candidates. Did we leave someone behind somewhere? Surely, the final Cylon isn't dead. It has to be a major character. I guess it has to be one of Helo/Roslin/Baltar. == Earth - Speculation ==

Kara Thrace is the harbinger of death, according to the hybrid. She is also the only character we know has been to Earth. What if she triggered a series of events that led to the destruction of the 13th tribe? She probably isn't the 5th, but she's something else. I think she's playing the character of Krishna for those of you who've read Bhagavad Gita, but at the same time her connections to the arrow of Apollo make me think she might be Arjuna. In either case, her counterpart would be the 5th.

What is hard to explain is her viper. How does it explode visibly and then come back in mint condition in the nebula? Vipers don't have FTL either, so everything seems weird.

* International Space Station and satellites probably wouldn't be affected by nuclear war
* They can't all be dead - there's got to be somebody alive from the 13th tribe.
* New York, sure, but who would waste a nuke on New Jersey? (*grin*)

ISS and other spacecraft in low-earth orbit will see their orbits decay within a decade (or even less) due to atmospheric drag without periodic reboosts (the demise of Skylab in 1979 is a perfect example of this). Even satellites in pretty high Earth orbit will fall back to Earth within a few hundred years - assuming that a significantly long time has elapsed since whatever happened on Earth, the only stuff left in orbit will be stuff out at the Clarke (geosynchronous) orbit.
== Locating Earth based on just a bearing ==

There's a comment made in the main article stating that making a precision jump based solely on a bearing seems unlikely. It doesn't seem to me like this would necessarily be the case. Based on the bearing, Galactica should be able to scan in that direction, looking for solar systems. From there, they could scan for inhabitable planets. Assuming they truly are in our solar system, that narrows it down to one planet. We know that Colonial FTLs are capable of some extremely precise jumps, so jumping into orbit doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility.

The part that seems unlikely to me is that the fleet has been haphazardly stumbling around all this time jumping from point to point, several hundred jumps from the 12 Colonies. Now the Fleet is within jump range of Earth, without even knowing exactly where they were going.

--[[User:Scionic|Scionic]] 16:55, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
:I don't think the Fleet jumped from their position to Earth in one jump. Getting to Earth probably took many jumps, which is what Lee meant when he said his course would have to be corrected as they went. The writers just skipped all these intermediate jumps and cut straight ahead to the final one. --[[User:Catrope|Catrope]]([[User talk:Catrope|Talk to me]] or [[Special:Emailuser/Catrope|e-mail me]]) 22:00, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
::Even given that, it would be more believable to jump somewhere into the solar system rather than directly into orbit on the final jump. That's really just dramatic license. However, as said above, it makes sense that they would use astronomical readings to determine the location of star systems in the direction. But, it wouldn't be the usual generic, faster-than-light sci-fi scans. BSG's stellar navigation is mostly more in line with real astronomy, i.e. using passive readings -- [[User:Serenity|Serenity]] 23:05, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
:::In watching the episode again, it looks like they very well might be inside the Sol System for their final jump, presumably to save time/fuel instead of slogging their away across the system at sublight. The last establishing shot of the fleet before the final jump shows a yellow star, fairly close. This is presumably our Sun. Plus, I have to say I disagree on the method of stellar navigation. For general in-system navigation and plotting, passive systems would make sense, but for FTL jumps (which have been indicated to be many light-years long), sci-fi faster-than-light scans would almost be necessary. Otherwise they'd be jumping into a region of space based on a scan that is many months or even years old. It would be like mounting an FTL drive on my car, and jumping into the middle of a busy freeway based on a picture I took a couple weeks ago - I could very well jump into the middle of another car, jump into a location that no longer exists, etc. --[[User:Scionic|Scionic]] 06:09, 16 June 2008 (UTC)
::::Better sure, but such magical technology simply doesn't exist. And all serious works of sci-fi deal a bit with the lightspeed information lag. True, BSG makes jumps next to planetary bodies and especially ships way too easy sometimes, but now and then, it's also pointed out how dangerous such jumps are. And that whole thing is the reason behind the term [[Red Line]]. A limit behind which jumps can't be plotted (e.g. stellar movement extrapolated from known data) accurately enough to have a certain margin of error. -- [[User:Serenity|Serenity]] 11:54, 16 June 2008 (UTC)
:::::The Universe is a very big and empty place... Using normal tools they indeed see outdated images, the way things were months maybe years before... But the movement of stars and planets can be easily observed and predicted accurately enough to jump in space and not inside a star or planet. Remember, they don't have to jump directly into orbit around Earth, probably not even in the solar system, just close enough to get a closer look and get more accurate coordinates... -- [[User:Evilforce|Evilforce]] 11:59, 16 June 2008 (UTC)
== Is it Earth at all? ==
Is the planet actually Earth? No recognisable land masses are visible from orbit, unlike in "[[Crossroads, Part II]]". The ruins look vaguely like Brooklyn and the Temple of Aurora, but it's inconclusive. The only thing conclusive is the star patterns match. Perhaps this is another pointer along the way. -- [[User:Xlynx|Xlynx]] 16:15, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
:The scriptures say the dying leader wasn't supposed to survive to see their new home, although that's making two assumptions - that the dying leader is Roslin and the new home is the planet. --[[User:Xlynx|Xlynx]] 23:27, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
::"Inductive reasoning is the death of philosophy". You can never prove anything definitively based on observed evidence, but I'd be willing to bet my house (if I owned one) on that being Earth. Aside from the many, many on-screen things, it would be a huge slap in the face to viewers if this was just [[Terra]] or something. Consider that the writers have set up this exquisite concept that in the near future civilisation is destroyed, only for it to be revealed that this is just some arbitrary planet. == Overview ==
:''President [[Laura Roslin]]'s abduction by the Cylon [[Hybrid]] triggers a bitter power struggle within the Fleet. The [[Quorum of Twelve (RDM)|Quorum]] has little information and demands to know what happened, while [[Tom Zarek]] insists that he is to be declared interim president. [[Lee Adama]] opposes him and enlists the help of notorious lawyer [[Romo Lampkin]] to find a candidate for the post, leading to a surprising decision. Meanwhile, Admiral [[William Adama|Adama]] and Colonel [[Saul Tigh|Tigh]] come to blows over Tigh's relationship with [[Caprica-Six]] and Adama's obsession to find Roslin.''
*With President [[Laura Roslin]] missing, a meeting is held by the [[Quorum of Twelve (RDM)|Quorum of Twelve]]. Vice President [[Tom Zarek]] heads the meeting and tells the delegates that with Roslin missing, he is to be sworn in as interim President.
*Upon hearing the news, [[Lee Adama]] contacts his [[William Adama|father]], who doesn't take it well.
*[[Natalie]], who has [[Guess What's Coming To Dinner?|just been shot]] by [[Sharon Agathon]], is taken to the [[sickbay|infirmary]]. She starts to have a vision or [[projection]] that she is in a forest on a sunny day. In real life, she only focuses on the faces of those who are taking her to the infirmary.
*Dr. [[Cottle]] immediately starts to operate on her. When she tries to make physical contact, likely sensing that she is about to die, Cottle takes her hand. However, just as they operate, her image of the forest brightens to a bright flash. The second this happens, her heart monitor flat lines, and Cottle announces her death.
*Admiral Adama sees Sharon Agathon and is angered by her decision to kill an unarmed woman, even if she was a [[Cylon (RDM)|Cylon]]. Agathon starts to explain her dream about a [[Number Six|Six]] taking away her [[Hera Agathon|child]] at the [[Opera House]]. Eventually, Adama orders a guard to take her away to the [[brig]] and refuses her access to her daughter.
*When Adama returns to the [[CIC]], he hears that the [[Resurrection Hub]] has disappeared from its last known location.
=== Act 1 ===

=== Act 2 ===
=== Act 3 ===

[[Image:410 Lampkin and pepperbox.jpg|thumb|Lampkin holds Lee Adama at gunpoint.]]

* Adama faces down the gun-wielding Lampkin, who explains that Adama's the perfect candidate for president and thus should die. However, Lampkin says that hope is the last thing they need; he says that humanity is a doomed race and should accept its fate. Lampkin kicks over the duffel bag, which has Lampkin's rationale for his actions. Adama opens it, discovering [[Lance]], who had been dead for weeks. Lampkin explains that "those debased dregs of humanity" killed Lance, and are looking for a place to "roost and ''rot'' again". Lampkin explains that the cat is immaterial, but it is the last physical connection he had with his [[Faye Lampkin|wife]]. Adama assures Lampkin that everyone that survived had to make difficult choices: there was nothing he could have done for his wife and two daughters (Jennifer and Kate), noting that only a handful of people elected to stay behind on [[Gemenon (RDM)|Gemenon]] who were on Lampkin's shuttle during the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies|attack]].
* Adama talks down Lampkin in a speech about having to make choices about their own survivial at the cost of other people's lives, urging him to put the past behind him and move on. Adama believes that he can make a difference in the Fleet; Lampkin asks him if that's his final word, then asks him to swear by it.
* Leland Joseph Adama is sworn in as interim president in a ceremony on ''[[Colonial One]]'', attended by Admiral Adama, [[Tory Foster]], and [[Tom Zarek]], in addition to the [[Fleet News Service|press corps]]. Lampkin listens to the ceremony on the wireless in his quarters.
* Admiral Adama informs Colonel Tigh that he's stepping down as military leader of the Fleet, promoting Tigh to admiral, as Tigh's the only person he can trust to command ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]''. Tigh scoffs this, reminding Adama of the [[Resistance (episode)|last time]] he commanded the Fleet; Adama notes that Tigh is a different man who found out a lot about himself since that time. Adama tells Tigh to bring the people to [[Earth (RDM)|Earth]]. As his last order, Adama tells Tigh to give custody of [[Hera Agathon|Hera]] to the in-hack [[Sharon Agathon]], expressing a need for everyone to have a family.
== Notes ==

* ''[[w:Sine qua non|Sine qua non]]'' is a Latin phrase meaning "without which not"; usually appended to mean "without which it could not be". It is famously used by [[w:Andrew Jackson|Andrew Jackson]], who says the following after receiving an honorary degree from [[w:Harvard|Harvard]]: "[[w:E pluribus unum|E pluribus unum]], my friends. Sine qua non."
* The pistol Lampkin uses to threaten Adama is a [[Stallion]]. The model previously appeared prominently in "[[Home, Part II]]".
* The episode features the first explicit mention of [[Gravity in the Re-imagined Series|artificial gravity]] in dialogue.
* The book ''[[Searider Falcon]]'' makes another appearance. Adama finds it in the derelict Raptor, somewhat singed.
* The lullaby [[Sharon Agathon]] hums to [[Hera Agathon|Hera]] is the same one hummed by [[Sharon Valerii]] to a captured [[Raider (RDM)|Raider]] in "[[Flesh and Bone]]".
* The infamous number, [[47]], appears in this episode as well: [[Romo Lampkin]] tells [[Lee Adama]] that they went through 47 candidates for interim president when confronting him on ''[[Colonial One]]''.
* While [[Tom Zarek]] claims that the government of the "past five years", it has only been about three and a half years since [[Laura Roslin]] and [[William Adama]] have risen to power.
* It can be inferred that [[James McManus]] is talking to Tom Zarek during the [[wireless]] interview, given that Zarek calls the interviewer "Jim".
* William Adama's comment about how often he had to repair his [[H.M.S. Glutton o' Punishment|model ship]] is a reference to the end of "[[Maelstrom]]", as well as a possible inside-joke about the fact that [[Edward James Olmos]] smashed the very expensive prop in and ad-lib during the shooting of that episode.

== Analysis ==

===General===
*Most civilians appear to have incorrectly assumed that the basestar's disappearance was a deliberate act of kidnapping, possibly in retaliation for Natalie's shooting.
* The apparition of loved one dredged up by a survivor—this time [[Lance]], the only remaining physical connection to [[Romo Lampkin]]'s wife, [[Faye Lampkin|Faye]]—is reminiscent of not only Adama's apparition of [[Carolanne Adama|his ex-wife]] in "[[A Day in the Life]]", but of Saul Tigh's apparition of [[Ellen Tigh]] during the fourth season, in which they cling to some memory of their wives.
* Despite the fact that ''[[Galactica]]'' has left the Fleet before to engage combat, this episode marks the first time that the [[The Fleet (RDM)|civilian Fleet]] is intentionally left without any defense. The only other time the Fleet was left without military aid was after [[Sharon Valerii|Boomer's]] assassination attempt of William Adama, when ''Galactica'' accidentally jumped to different coordinates than the rest of the Fleet ([[Scattered]]).

===Characters===
* [[William Adama]]'s actions in the search for [[Laura Roslin]], namely the unreasonable allocation of resources and putting the Fleet at unnecessary risk, are precisely the same actions he executed when searching for [[Kara Thrace]] in "[[You Can't Go Home Again]]". Similarly, it is Colonel [[Saul Tigh|Tigh]] who helps bring the end to Adama's irrational actions, this time without Roslin's help and more violently.
* Odd as it seems, [[Romo Lampkin]]'s erratic behavior towards Lee Adama is not wholly uncontrolled. Throughout the encounter, Lampkin forces Adama to defend his willingness to make tough decisions, his courage, and his optimism. He uses his personal tragedies to full effect, confronting Adama with the dead cat just as he used the memory of his love for Faye to manipulate Caprica-Six. His willingness to use any means necessary to do the job (either to acquit Baltar or to vet presidential candidates). He tacitly admits his plan towards the end, in his response to Adama's determination to make a positive difference: "Is that your last word?....Then swear it." While there is still a streak of craziness in Lampkin's actions that goes beyond his usual eccentricities, this behavior is in line with his previous manipulations of people (for example through his kleptomania), including Lee Adama.

=== Cylons ===
* The child of [[Caprica-Six]] and Tigh will be the first known fully Cylon child, should it come to full term.
* The ability of Tigh to impregnate Six indicates a fundamental difference between the [[Final Five]] and [[Significant Seven]], as Significant Seven Cylons have been thus far unable to conceive with one another.

== Questions ==
* Is there any significance to [[Natalie]]'s dying visions? If so, what?
* What exactly happened to the rebel baseship and the [[Resurrection Hub]]? How did the rebels and Colonials escape if their baseship was destroyed?
* How will the Fleet react to an [[Lee Adama|Adama]] as president?
* Will [[Caprica-Six]]'s child remain a secret?
** Will she be allowed/able to give birth to what would be the first fully Cylon child?
** If so, what will happen to the child? Will [[Saul Tigh|Tigh]] take on fatherly responsibilities?
*How will [[Gaius Baltar]] react to Caprica-Six and Saul Tigh's child?
* How will the [[Quorum of Twelve (RDM)|Quorum]] and the Fleet respond to Tigh's being left in charge of ''Galactica'' and the military?
* Who will be Tigh's [[XO]]?
* Will Adama manage to find [[Laura Roslin|Roslin]] by waiting out in deep space?
* Has [[Kara Thrace]] been re-accepted by her comrades?
* Did someone really kill [[Lance]], or did the cat die of natural causes or possibly neglect?

== Official Statements ==

* ''[[Michael Taylor]] discusses his spoiler-free impressions of a scene:''
: I was in the editing room, watching one of our talented editors assemble a rough cut of a single scene. Not a huge scene, just a relatively brief but quietly powerful scene between [[William Adama|Adama]] and [[Saul Tigh|Tigh]] (you’ll see it in Episode 8, “Sine Qua Non”). What struck me is that while the dialogue was relatively simple, these two actors brought so much to it that the smallest looks and gestures carried immense weight. It made me realize anew how, after four seasons, these characters have accumulated so much history and nuance. As embodied by actors like [[Edward James Olmos|Edward J. Olmos]] and [[Michael Hogan]], they are wrenchingly human. Less characters than people I have now spent years with, and who still surprise me.<ref name="thewatcher">{{cite_web|url=http://featuresblogs.chicagotribune.com/entertainment_tv/2007/11/answers-to-your.html|title=Answers to your 'Razor' questions and clues about 'Battlestar Galactica's' final season|date=16 November 2007|accessdate=16 November 2007|last=Ryan|first=Maureen|format=|language=}}</ref>

== Noteworthy Dialogue ==

* ''[[William Adama]] confronts [[Saul Tigh]] about [[Caprica-Six]]'s pregnancy:''
: '''William Adama:''' I know that you've been spending a lotta time interrogating the Six, but now the brig guards tell me that every time you order them out, you turn off the cameras.
: '''Saul Tigh:''' I'm not torturing her, if that's what you're worried about.
: '''Adama:''' I'm not. That I could almost understand. This I can't. [[Cottle]] tells me she's pregnant. What the frak have you been thinking, colonel? ''Do you deny it...? You don't... '''You can't.''''' What the hell have you been thinking? Who's interrogating whom? How many of our secrets have you told this thing?
: '''Tigh:''' ''How can you even ask me that?'' Question my loyalty?
: '''Adama:''' Your loyalty? I need more than your loyalty. You're my first officer, I need judgment. I need your ''competence''. You're jeopardizing this ship, putting it at risk because of your weaknesses.
: '''Tigh:''' ''My'' weaknesses?
: '''Adama:''' Yeah, your weaknesses!
: '''Tigh:''' You're risking all our lives—for what? Our missing pilots? ''No—for a frakking woman! '''A frakking woman!'''''
: '''Adama:''' ''You watch what you frakkin' say about that woman! She's the president! Not some frakkin' skinjob that I've been banging!'' What do you think [[Ellen Tigh|Ellen]] would say about this?
: '''Tigh:''' Leave Ellen out of this.
: '''Adama:''' What do you think Ellen would say about her husband impregnating a frakkin' Cylon prisoner?
: '''Tigh:''' '''You ''motherfrakker''!''' (violence ensues)

*''Admiral Adama chews out [[Sharon Agathon]] for murdering [[Natalie]]:''
:'''Adama:''' You murdered an unarmed woman, and by doing so you put the lives of every single person in this fleet at risk; and quite possibly cost the lives of the [[Laura Roslin|president]] and [[Karl Agathon|your husband]]. You disobeyed the direct orders of your superior officers, but more importantly, you betrayed a promise to me. I [[Precipice#Noteworthy Dialogue|trusted you]].
:'''Agathon:''' Sir, I will accept any form of punishment that you think I deserve. I just ask that you please don't take away [[Hera Agathon|Hera]].
:'''Adama:''' I'm afraid the [[brig]] is no place for a little girl. ''Guards!'' Get her out of my sight!

*''[[Romo Lampkin]] to [[Lee Adama]]:''
:"Lampkin's First Rule of Legal Dynamics: When an irresistible force meets a movable object, stand aside and wait for the class action suit."

*''More Lampkin:''
:'''Lampkin:''' So you can't be dissuaded, will you? Not even when you hear my fee?
:'''Lee Adama:''' Fee?
:'''Lampkin:''' Appearances to the contrary, I'm actually in this for the money. I have a reputation to maintain after all.
:'''Adama:''' OK, so what did Roslin offer you to defend Baltar?
:'''Lampkin:''' (pointing at a small window in the bulkhead) Room with a view.
:'''Adama:''' I'm not sure I can improve on that.
:'''Lampkin:''' Then pro bono it is, counselor. Word to the wise: sometimes it's better to settle for what you've already got.

*''Lampkin about political power and Lee Adama:''
:'''Lampkin:''' Quandary is, one doesn't generally get the chance to wield political power without the ambition to actively seek it. That same ambition often compromises the unselfish motives that began the quest. In other words, in a battle of it versus ego, that ego rarely wins.
:'''Adama:''' Roslin never sought power.
:'''Lampkin:''' Exception that proves the rule. One could argue that Laura Roslin is a study in ''repressed'' ambition, just like you, Mr Adama. Never seeking out a job until it's handed to you. [[CAG|Flight leader]], [[Pegasus (RDM)|battlestar]] commander, [[Quorum of Twelve (RDM)|Quorum]] delegate. Man doesn't carve out a path like that through life without...
:'''Adama:''' Alright, enough of the psychoanalysis. Let's get back to the job at hand.

*''Lampkin and Admiral Adama on the hangar deck, watching the deck crew and pilots at work:''
:'''Lampkin:''' Writs of forfeiture. The captains want to be absolved of any blame should anything untoward happen. One of the less ennobling consequences of a legal culture. No one wants responsibility. (hands him a pen to sign) Lee said you [[The Hand of God (RDM)|once]] gave ''him'' something before a mission. A lighter, wasn't it?
:'''Adama''' It belonged to my [[Joseph Adama|father]]. Foolish to think a hunk of metal can keep him safe.
:'''Lampkin:''' And yet, that's what we do, isn't it? Hang on to hope in every hopelessly irrational way that we can. (watches the crew wishing each other luck) But not like ''those'' poor bastards. Giving away their luck just when they need it most. It's like they've given up.
:'''Adama:''' If you've never been in combat, you have ''no'' idea what they're thinking.
:'''Lampking:''' I've always imagined you were a realist, Admiral, not one to indulge a vain hope at the cost of lives. But then, everyone has his limits. "Sine qua non", as they say.
:'''Adama:''' Without which not.
:'''Lampkin:''' Yes. Those things we deem essential, without which we cannot bear living. Without which life in general loses its specific value, becomes abstract.
:'''Adama:''' You may have a point, counselor.
:'''Lampkin:''' And while I'm on a roll: [[Tom Zarek]] may not be an ideal president, but we could do worse.
:'''Adama:''' You're right. There are limits to my realism. Goodbye counselor.

*''Lampkin confronts Lee Adama after naming him the candidate for interim president:''
:'''Lampkin:''' Savor your victory Mr. Adama, because you'll never get the chance to serve (pulls out a gun and points it at Adama).
:'''Adama:''' What are you doing?
:'''Lampkin:''' Why? Because you're perfect for the job of course. Because after the vicious separation that was Baltar's presidency and the ''bitter'' disappointment that was Roslin's, you ''are'' a shining beacon of hope. Only hope is the last thing we need. We're a doomed race. It's time that we made our peace with that essential truth.
:'''Adama:''' Romo, what the hell are you talking...?
:'''Lampkin:''' Why? You want to know why? (drops his duffel bag and kicks it over to Adama) '''Open it!'''
:'''Adama:''' (Adama does so and finds [[Lance]]'s corpse inside) Eww. Frak.
:'''Lampkin:''' That's right. They killed my cat!
:'''Adama:''' They?
:'''Lampkin:''' They! Those debased dregs of humanity out there! Lost a tribe in search of a new home, so they can roost and rot ''again''!
:'''Adama:''' How long has the cat been dead?
:'''Lampkin:''' "''How long?''" It's irrelevant! It's immaterial! It wasn't even ''my'' cat!
:'''Adama:''' Romo, it's been dead for weeks.
:'''Lampkin:''' It belonged to my [[Faye Lampkin|wife]]. I just retrieved him from a vet on Gemenon when the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies|bombs started to fall]] and fate presented me with a choice. I could get back on that shuttle, or...I could run home, try to save my family. How do you think I chose?
:'''Adama:''' Romo, we all had to make difficult choices. You don't think I know? Your wife's name was Faye. You had two daughters. Jennifer and Kate. There were over two hundred passengers on that shuttle! Only a handful chose to stay behind. (Lampkin stares at him questioning) Yeah, that's right. It was in your file when you were handed the job as Baltar's counsel. And no one blamed you Romo, because at a certain point, we all made decisions that saved ''our'' lives at the cost of others. You think you're unique, Romo? Think your sins are so special?
:'''Lampkin:''' Is that how it goes? You're gonna rest your entire case on that ''pathetic'' little bit of insight?
:'''Adama:''' No. Unless, the clean start, the fresh slate, maybe they're illusions like you said. But at a certain point, faith in ourselves, in our right to survive as a species, as a people...it's not a given, it's a choice. Well, I made mine. And if you can't stomach that, then you'd damn well better squeeze that trigger right now. Go on. What are you waiting for? Or you can make a choice. Put your past behind you. Put the gun down, and help me, because I'm telling you, I'm gonna make a difference in this fleet.
:'''Lampkin:''' Is that your final word?
:'''Adama:''' That's up to you.
:'''Lampkin:''' Then swear it. (the next scene shows Adama being sworn in as president)
== My Prediction ==

And it shouldn't be a big surprise, but I have to state it for the record:

Battlestar ''Pegasus'' makes its last appearance today. I think it will be used to ram a basestar or two to save ''Galactica'', which puts up a good fight but is getting outmatched.
My prediction doesn't come from anything but from the gut, but it should be interesting if it comes true. --[[User:Spencerian|Spencerian]] 16:53, 20 October 2006 (CDT)
:I'm hoping that it doesnt get destroyed, seeing as that would kill Lee Adama and far too many other people - if this happened, people would switch off. I'm predicting that it'll save the day at the last second. If you think about it, Lee Adama was ordered to stay behind with the fleet and continue the search for earth. I'm betting that he does the usual thing of going against orders, jumping back anyway at the last second and launches a nuke or two at a basestar.
== Is this a clue? ==

When Starbuck gets back to Galactica with the kid, and the supposed mother sees it, and latches on, she says either "Gods bless you" or "GOD bless you", and after watching it about 5 times on my TiVo, I'm leaning towards GOD, singular, and perhaps a clue that this lady is not who she claims. I mean, if that really is a hybrid, then it would be valuable enough to pull such a move just to get it out of Colonial hands.

Also, if it weren't for horrible interior design, I'd rather Galactica had been boned, and they all just moved into Pegasus and renamed it Galactia-A or something. If it weren't for the lame bridge, it'd be a much better ship.

: The assumption is reasonable -- however, I believe it is extremely likely that the woman is who she claims to be. Also, given the horrible success rate at Cylon farms, it is likely that Kacey was indeed a ruse to get Thrace to love Conoy. Once Conoy had Thrace's love, their love would lead to the next step. As for the "God" versus "Gods" thing.... also, it's been indicated that the Colonials have varying faiths, and some don't necessarily believe in the Sacred Scrolls, Pythia and all that jazz. Also, it wouldn't be ''Battlestar Galactica'' without ''Galactica''... -- [[User:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|Joe Beaudoin]] [[User talk:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|So say we all]] - [[Battlestar Wiki:Site support|Donate]] 00:01, 21 October 2006 (CDT)
:Hi, BR. That's a valid question. Before the Cylon fleet discovered New Caprica, Dualla was commenting how hard it was to see anything in the nebula, and they were in orbit. :When you see the Raptors flying towards New Caprica waiting to launch their drones, you can see Galactica lurking just behind the nebula, making her invisible to Cylon DRADIS. Once the drones were close enough to the planet they would register as two battlestars coming out of nowhere, which makes the Cylons think they jumped in. This leaves the question why there wasn't any soup visible on the DRADIS screens, but maybe both Cylons and Colonials just modified their DRADIS consoles to ignore anything at the nebula's location, so as to make the DRADIS image less distracting. == Galactica's atmospheric insertion ==

I haven't been able to double check but I'm pretty sure Helo read off their altitude as "900,000." Now IIRC, the Colonials use metric so that would be meters. In other words, they were 600 miles off the deck. So I'm pretty sure I misheard that.

But even factoring for editing and such, I'm pretty sure they took some dramatic lisence with the freefall time.

RDM said they were going to try to keep the physics real, and this is peanut stuff.

<math>s=v_{i}t+\frac{at^{2}}{2}</math>
<math>v_i=0</math> because theyare starting from rest, so freefall time given by <math>\sqrt{\frac{2s}{a}}=t</math>
== Isn't Tom Zarek vice-president? ==

If I recall correctly, Tom Zarek was elected as Baltar's vice-president. Now that Baltar has departed for parts unknown, wouldn't Zarek ascend to the presidency? How can Roslin legally lay claim to the presidency? Shouldn't Zarek be heading up to Colonial One? [[User:Spidey3|Spidey3]] 11:12, 24 October 2006 (CDT)

:Zarek said he resigned when the Cylons set up Baltar's puppet government. It would take a lawyer and a precise knowledge of Colonial law to determine if he still has a claim to the office --[[User:Serenity|Serenity]] 11:19, 24 October 2006 (CDT)

::I think Zarek knew who was in charge at that exact moment. It's hard to challenge for leadership in the middle of a fight. It's hard to change the course of a ship in mid-stream. There's nothing to say that Zarek won't challenge for the presidency in later episodes, but at that exact moment, I think that the only thing he was thinking about was getting off the planet along with everybody else. And I do speculate that maybe he was thinking that he was on the wrong side of the coin over the whole Baltar election and maybe has a new-found fondness for Laura Roslin from the evidence of the firing squad and the evacuation. The man is pretty pragmatic at times. It will be interesting to see which way their relationship turns over the coming episodes.--[[User:Straycat0|Straycat0]] 17:32, 24 October 2006 (CDT)

:::There's also the matter of association. While Zarek can clearly show that he did not collaborate with the Cylons by way of his incarceration, it is very likely that Zarek (a man that plays the political game almost as well as Roslin) wants little to do with inheriting the administration of a despised president. Only Roslin, the past president, will stand an immediate chance to assume the interim role once more with support from the populace. Based on his behavior, it seems that Zarek, once Roslin's adversary, appears to accept Roslin far more than in the past, even with concern for her life. He may choose to be her vice president, and she might accept it. --[[User:Spencerian|Spencerian]] 20:55, 24 October 2006 (CDT)

::::I think Zarek plays the political game quite a bit better than Roslin. He simply does not have as good a position as she does coming out of all of this. I agree wholeheartedly with this analysis. Roslin will, from a purely popular standpoint, have a much better position than Zarek going into whatever reorganization the fleet and civilian population will undergo in the aftermath of the great escape. Indeed, Adama is very clearly (for the present moment) viewed as something of a messiah, and I suspect any support Adama cares to throw into the presidency will go directly to Roslin. Zarek knows what time it is, and I suspect that he will quietly accept the vice-presidency. A cynical man might even be pardoned for supposing that Zarek foresaw this and planned accordingly. --[[User:Felix Culpa|Felix Culpa]] 22:52, 25 October 2006 (CDT)
==Atmospheric Heating Effects==

Of course it looked cool, but I am not really sure why the underside of Galactica would have been superheated as it descended toward New Caprica City the way it was protrayed in the episode. Such superheating is not the result of free-falling through the atmosphere, but actually the result of friction with the atmosphere due to extreme velocity. Which is precisely why skydivers do not burn up after jumping out of an airplane but space craft deorbiting (traveling initially at about 5 miles per second coming from low Earth orbit as an example) do. Galactica jumped into the atmosphere over New Caprica City, it did not (strictly speaking) reenter the atmosphere. It is possible, of course, that any velocity Galactica had prior to jumping was imparted to or else retained by Galactica after the jump. However, one might be pardoned for supposing that any such velocity would have been along the ship's main bow-to-stern axis (though this is not necessarily true), and not stright along the free fall axis the ship was clearly heating up on (i.e., from dorsal-to-ventral axis). I would also point out that Galactica did not appear to be traveling at a sufficient speed in its fall to cause superheating, though of course this may be the subject of debate. Anyway, just a thought. The dramatic effect more than made up for any possible technical inaccuracy, and I agree woth those who think this is the best episode on the new series yet. --[[User:Felix Culpa|Felix Culpa]] 19:13, 25 October 2006 (CDT)
: Although I agree with your assessment -- and not to fanwank at all -- perhaps the burning effect is a result of jumping into a planetary atmosphere? -- [[User:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|Joe Beaudoin]] [[User talk:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|So say we all]] - [[Battlestar Wiki:Site support|Donate]] 06:44, 26 October 2006 (CDT)
::Well you have to keep in mind the mammoth size of the ''Galactica''. I think she was moving more than speedily enough to cause severe heating on the lower parts of the ship. --[[User:BklynBruzer|BklynBruzer]] 10:28, 26 October 2006 (CDT)
:::Just a relevent excerpt from the [[Podcast:Exodus, Part II|podcast]] (maybe it deserves a podcast ref on "Galactica type battlestar"):
:::"We had some internal questions about the technical feasibility of Galactica jumping into the atmosphere and falling through the- falling like a rock through this. You could argue it either way. It's all s- it's science fiction so who knows what Galactica's made of and the structure integrity, etc., etc. My logic was, "Look. If Galactica can take hit from a nuke, and keep on moving, which we established in the miniseries. If it can take a nuke and still be ok on some level, this is a tough motherfuckin' machine." So that means if it- I can buy that it has enough structural integrity to fall through that atmosphere. It couldn't maneuver. It can't fly. That's not what it's designed to do. But I bought the idea that it could hang together long enough to just fall straight down and then launch its Vipers and then get the hell out of there." --[[User:Steelviper|Steelviper]] 10:38, 26 October 2006 (CDT)

::::Uh... Yeah, I think Galatica was moving fast enough. Neglecting air drag, some quick calculations, I put her speed near the ground at somewhere near Mach 2.25. Remember that the SR-71 flew at Mach 3+, but only in the neighborhood of 80,000 feet. The air is much thinner, and consquently frictional heating is much less. But Galactica was accelerating and moving into denser air layers.
::::Now given her downright crappy aerodynamics, it is not implausable that pockets of air stalled beneath the ship during the fall. This would allow the gasses to become super heated. Contrast this with say and SR-71. A given air molecule is only in contact with the skin of the plane for about .09 seconds.
::::Once we bring friction in, I don't think these numbers will vary <i>too</i> wildly, but if that's just a guesstimate
::::So anyway, Was she falling hot enough to glow red hot? I'm thinking no. Just too much metal, too much mass. Was she falling hot enough to superheat the surrounding atmosphere, I'll say "until I can perform more precise calculations, yeah, its possible."
::::[[User:Grimlock|Grimlock]] 11:18, 26 October 2006 (CDT)
:::::Superheating is caused by frictional energy converted to heat and the formula for energy is Energy = Force x Distance or Energy = Mass x Acceleration Squared x Distance or Energy = Mass x Velocity Squared. Mass is an equal factor in creating energy as Velocity squared. Point is: The Galactica's got a lot of mass. I argue that it's probably a million times the size of the space shuttle which is 2000 times the size the Mercury 3 that carried Alan Sheppard to be the 1st American in space, both objects that superheated. Also, a problem that aircraft like the SR-71 have at approaching Mach 3 is that the engines superheat, limiting speeds to about Mach 3. The Soviet Mig-25 interceptor, whenever it makes a run at the supposed Mach 3.5 that it can do, has to have it's engines replaced because the parts fuse due to superheating as a result of frictional energy. --[[User:Straycat0|Straycat0]] 12:21, 26 October 2006 (CDT)
== Nuclear Weapons ==

I was just watching this episode, and I realised that both the Galactica and the Pegasus had nuclear weapons on board. My question is: Why didn't they use them? I'm sure one nuclear warhead would have been more than enough to destroy a basestar, and on the algae planet it's revealed that galactica has 4. It makes no sense to me...
--> [[User:Evilforce|Evilforce]] 17:10, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
:Well a nuclear warhead is more than capable of blowing a basestar to shreds when it's detonated ''inside'' the basestar, but when detonated on the ''outside'', one nuke is probably not enough. ''Galactica'' survived a nuclear hit with not too much material damage in the [[Miniseries]] (although they did loose about a hundred crew members, the only way they could lose the ship at that point was by letting the fire get to the fuel lines), and ''Pegasus'' survived being hit by two nukes while the ship was in condition five (they probably had some more damage than ''Galactica'' did, but evidenced by the [[Battle of the Communications Relay]], they were back to full offensive capability relatively quickly after [[Scylla|they got some parts]]). A basestar can probably take about the same as a battlestar, so I think it doesn't worry too much when hit by just one nuke (it does significant damage, but it's far from a one-hit kill).
:Also, bear in mind that a nuke doesn't necessarily reach its target, especially when there's hundreds (or, in the case of the [[Battle of New Caprica]], probably even two to three thousand) Raiders ready to shoot it down. Even out of seven nukes (not four, as you said), probably only one would get somewhere. Another disadvantage is that any Vipers in the vicinity of the blast would have their pilots fried (this probably applies to Raiders too, as the Cylons have never been seen going nuclear while they had Raiders in the air). In this case, I agree it would've made sense to use nukes, but I'd've targeted a large Raider wave instead (all Vipers were down on the planet, after all). --[[User:Catrope|Catrope]]([[User talk:Catrope|Talk to me]] or [[Special:Emailuser/Catrope|e-mail me]]) 18:09, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Good point... but I was mostly thinking of the Pegasus... It jumped in, and had no visible obstacles between itself and one maybe two of the basestars. One basestar was destroyed by maybe 10-20 shots from the main battery...
Wouldn't it have made more sense to make the first strike using a nuclear missile? Or maybe all of them! I'm sure at least one basestar would have been destroyed, leaving the conventional weapons for another one of the four basestars...
Maybe the use of those warheads would have saved both battlestars...
--- [[User:Evilforce|Evilforce]] 20:41, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
:There's no reason to use nukes when 20 shells will do the same job. Gun shells are cheap, plentiful and producible (there's a facility aboard ''Galactica'' producing Viper ammunition, they probably produce larger shells as well ([[Sacrifice]])) and easy to fire, nukes are expensive, not reproducible and require a hell of a lot of protocol stuff before they can be launched. --[[User:Catrope|Catrope]]([[User talk:Catrope|Talk to me]] or [[Special:Emailuser/Catrope|e-mail me]]) 20:48, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
:Not to mention the fact that DRADIS barely works in the New Caprica nebula... Also, the Cylons could more than likely intercept a ship-to-ship nuke before it could hit its target, which is why they went to the trouble of smuggling the nuke aboard the [[Guardian basestar]] in "[[Razor]]". -- [[User:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|Joe Beaudoin]] [[User talk:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|So say we all]] - [[Battlestar Wiki:Site support|Donate]] - [[bsp:|Battlestar Pegasus]] 21:29, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
The way I see it, the nukes on the Pegasus were wasted. The cylons could have possibly intercepted the nukes or they may have hit their target... But what happened is this: No nukes were used, either by Galactica or Pegasus... the obvious result? Pegasus was lost along with it's unused nuclear arsenal.
== Is this a clue? ==

== Where does this question go? ==

Earlier today, I posted a question in the Questions section about why the DRADIS displays on both battlestars were inexplicably clear of the nebula's interference, but it was deleted. Is there a more appropriate place for it? --[[User:BlueResistance|BlueResistance]] 21:00, 21 October 2006 (EDT)

:Hi, BR. That's a valid question. Before the Cylon fleet discovered New Caprica, Dualla was commenting how hard it was to see anything in the nebula, and they were in orbit. Now, in this episode, both sides appeared to be using DRADIS without issue from the interference. Me senses a [[Continuity errors (RDM)|continuity error]]. You can re-add the question here (note my winded explanation) or add to the continuities article. --[[User:Spencerian|Spencerian]] 20:40, 21 October 2006 (CDT)
::Reaching a concenus and corlaberation is the wiki's primary goal. Sometimes authros disagree, so usually once something is removed and someone things it should say, bring it up on the talk page is the proper course of action to dicuss the matter further. --[[User:Shane|Shane]] ([[User_Talk:Shane|T]] - [[Special:Contributions/Shane|C]] - [[Special:Editcount/Shane|E]]) 03:23, 22 October 2006 (CDT)

If that does give you enough time to for your scene, set the intial hight higher.
== Isn't Tom Zarek vice-president? ==

Y'know, I realized, this episode's tossed up a lot about the show. We started off with one half-crewed battlestar, then grew to two half-crewed battlestars, and now we're down to one fully-crewed battlestar. Plus, Ellen was killed, Starbuck's been through hell, and a good 3/4 of the fleet has gone through horrible events at the hands of the Cylons. ==Atmospheric Heating Effects==

::::[[User:Grimlock|Grimlock]] 11:18, 26 October 2006 (CDT)
== Nuclear Weapons ==

--> [[User:Evilforce|Evilforce]] 17:10, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Battlestar ''Pegasus'' makes its last appearance today. I think it will be used to ram a basestar or two to save ''Galactica'', which puts up a good fight but is getting outmatched.
I'm predicting that it'll save the day at the last second. If you think about it, Lee Adama was ordered to stay behind with the fleet and continue the search for earth. == Is this a clue? ==

== Isn't Tom Zarek vice-president? ==

Y'know, I realized, this episode's tossed up a lot about the show. Plus, Ellen was killed, Starbuck's been through hell, and a good 3/4 of the fleet has gone through horrible events at the hands of the Cylons. ==Atmospheric Heating Effects==

::::[[User:Grimlock|Grimlock]] 11:18, 26 October 2006 (CDT)
== Nuclear Weapons ==

--> [[User:Evilforce|Evilforce]] 17:10, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Battlestar ''Pegasus'' makes its last appearance today. I think it will be used to ram a basestar or two to save ''Galactica'', which puts up a good fight but is getting outmatched.
== Is this a clue? ==

:Hi, BR. That's a valid question. Before the Cylon fleet discovered New Caprica, Dualla was commenting how hard it was to see anything in the nebula, and they were in orbit. ::Reaching a concenus and corlaberation is the wiki's primary goal.

== Isn't Tom Zarek vice-president? ==

==Quite the episode==
I'm REALLY looking forward to seeing what our beloved RDM does with the series. --[[User:BklynBruzer|BklynBruzer]] 20:11, 24 October 2006 (CDT)
==Atmospheric Heating Effects==

::::[[User:Grimlock|Grimlock]] 11:18, 26 October 2006 (CDT)
Frankie, regarding your deletion of answered questions - I think we should keep old questions, even once later episodes answer them.
