Doctor Cyrus Xander is Daniel Graystone's assistant at Graystone Industries 58 years before the Fall of the Twelve Colonies.

Xander interfaces with the Ministry of Defense on the U-87 Project that begets the creation of the Cylon prototype. He worries that the contract for U-87 project would go off world to Tomas Vergis, after discovering that Vergis Corporation successfully created a meta-cognitive processor. He is present at the demonstration of the Cylon prototype to Joan Leyte, the new Caprican Minister of Defense (CAP: Caprica pilot) and later informs Daniel that the original prototype is the only machine to be self-aware and possess true, adaptive artificial intelligence (CAP: "Rebirth").

Sometime afterward, Xander takes on the role of defender and personal supporter for Daniel. In the wake of Amanda Graystone's public statements about their daughter's involvement in the Maglev bombing, he arranges for Priyah Magnus to consult Daniel on a public relations strategy (CAP: "The Reins of a Waterfall"). At a meeting of Graystone Industries senior executives, Xander responds to demands for Daniel's removal by reminding them that "Daniel Graystone is the brand" and that removing him would be suicide for the company (CAP: "There Is Another Sky"). Xander is dismayed and angered to hear that Daniel used Ha'la'tha to steal the meta-cognitive processor, but eventually calmed and offered guidance on how he should talk with Tomas Vergis and deal with Vergis' accusations (CAP: "Know Thy Enemy"). As problems mount and Vergis takes the CEO position from Daniel, Xander remains loyal to Daniel, keeping the ruined remains of the original U-87 despite Vergis' order to scrap them, and reporting to Daniel on developments inside Graystone Industries (CAP: "End of Line," "Unvanquished"). Cyrus' loyalty is rewarded when Daniel is reinstated as CEO as Daniel and the Ha'la'tha consider it unnecessary to blackmail Cyrus in order to attain his vote for Daniel's reinstatement.
}}</ref> He met Amanda, his future wife, at a time in her life when she was recovering from serious psychological trauma. Daniel proved to be an important source of emotional stability (CAP: "End of Line"). With Amanda, Daniel had a daughter, Zoe. Daniel's first years of family life were financially and professionally difficult, and were marred by a fire that destroyed the family's first home. Eventually, Daniel would secure a contract with the Microcap company, beginning the upward climb of his career (CAP: "There Is Another Sky," "Ghosts in the Machine").

Corporate Success
Building on these early successes, Daniel founded a Caprica-based corporation that pioneered the development of the holoband, a user interface technology that allows for seemingly fully immersive virtual reality. The success of the technology made Daniel a celebrity scientist, frequently appearing on television. At the same time, his company began contracting with the Caprican government to develop technologies for military application, the most prominent of which was the U-87 Cyber Combat Unit. This project aimed at replacing human soldiers with cybernetic units installed with artificial intelligence.

While the development of the cybernetic body was successful, Daniel had considerably more difficulty with the programming of a true artificial intelligence and its related hardware. The project had originally been planned to take five years, but the increasing number of prototype failures led to the program falling five years behind schedule and five hundred million cubits over budget. Frustrated with Daniel's failures, the Caprican government threatened to cancel its contract with the company and take the project to the Vergis Corporation, Graystone Industries' Tauron competitor, which had announced the successful development of a meta-cognitive processor that could serve as an artificial intelligence.

Personal Tragedy
Daniel suffered a personal loss when his daughter Zoe was killed in a suicide bombing aboard the Lev in Caprica City. However, he later discovered that before her death, Zoe had developed a method of uploading personal data onto the holoband that resulted in the creation of a holographic avatar of herself. Daniel believed it would be possible to use the U-87 prototype's body, combined with the processor developed by Vergis, to upload Zoe's avatar and allow her to live in the real world.

As a result, Daniel contacted Joseph Adama, a lawyer whose daughter and wife had also been killed in the terrorist bombing. Daniel asked Adama to use his ties to the Ha'la'tha crime syndicate on Tauron to steal the Vergis processor; in exchange, Daniel would reconstruct the personalities of Adama's daughter and possibly his wife. While Adama acquired the processor and handed it over to Daniel, he later became disgusted with the idea of resurrecting the personalities of the dead, leaving Daniel to pursue the matter himself.

Undaunted, Daniel tried to recreate Zoe as a robot, implanting Zoe's avatar in a U-87 unit. While the experiment initially seemed to work, with the robot calling Daniel "daddy" and taking a few steps forward, the avatar's data quickly became corrupted and the robot collapsed. Despite Daniel's efforts to recover his daughter's avatar, the program appeared to be irretrievable.

Creation of the Cylons
Despite his failure to bring back his daughter, Graystone uses the stolen processor to perfect the military prototype for the government project. Dubbing the unit a Cybernetic Life-form Node (CYLON), Graystone presents the completed unit to an impressed group of government officials. Graystone Industries was officially awarded a contract for the production of one hundred thousand U-87s (CAP: Caprica pilot).

This success was short-lived, when it quickly became apparent that only the original U-87 prototype would function sufficiently; as described by Dr. Cyrus Xander, Daniel's assistant, attempts to produce copies or to transplant the stolen MCP into other robot bodies produced "morons" (CAP: "Rebirth"). For long weeks, Daniel and his company would struggle in vain to find an explanation for the problem. He briefly (and correctly) suspected that Zoe's avatar was still in the robot, but attempts meant to force Zoe to identify herself failed (CAP: "Ghosts in the Machine"). Faced with the plummeting price of Graystone Industries stock, a dwindling supply of cash, and an accelerated production schedule forced onto him by a suspicious military, Daniel decided to purge any anomalies from the MCP and to start with "clean" MCPs. The Cylon, however, killed a Graystone Industries employee and escaped from its laboratory before the procedure could be performed (CAP: "End of Line").

Public and Personal Crises
Although Daniel and Amanda were arguably the highest profile relatives of the Lev bombing victims, the public attention given to them did not greatly exceed that of other survivors. All of this changed abruptly at a memorial service one month after the bombing, during which Amanda announced that Zoe was responsible for the bombing. Daniel was forced to wisk his wife away from an angry crowd (CAP: "Rebirth"). Almost instantly, attitudes on Caprica and across the Twelve Colonies turned against Daniel, his family, and Graystone Industries. Daniel himself was abducted and beaten by Sam Adama and compelled by a changed Joseph Adama to bring back the avatar of his daughter--a demand which Daniel could not meet (CAP: "The Reins of a Waterfall"). Public opinion continued to sour, and Daniel reluctantly decided to make a more active PR response by appearing on the Backtalk with Baxter Sarno late night talk show (CAP: "The Reins of a Waterfall"). Despite coaching and high expectations for the interview, Daniel's attempts to defend himself and to present Zoe as a "troubled" teenager floundered, until he was unexpectedly joined on stage by Amanda. Together, the two of them created a more compelling narrative, of Zoe being yet another young victim of the dangers of life on the holoband--and continuing in the spirit of that narrative, Daniel spontaneously announced the creation of a fund for young holoband addicts and the end of the holoband as a profit-making enterprise for Graystone Industries (CAP: "Gravedancing").

Stunned by the instant elimination of sixty percent of the corporation's revenue, the board of directors of Graystone Industries quickly maneuvered to remove Daniel from the board. Daniel countered with a dramatic presentation to the board, arguing that the holoband could not be sustained as a source of profit in any case, and that the future of the company lay in a new technology that would even more radically change the face of Colonial society: the Cylons. Daniel's position as CEO was saved (CAP: "There Is Another Sky").

Daniel's successes were threatened by the appearance on Caprica of his personal rival, Tomas Vergis, who revealed that not only did he know that Daniel was responsible for ordering the theft of the MCP, but also for the murder of two close friends during the theft. Rather than taking Daniel to court, Vergis promised to systematically take or destroy everything that was dear to him (CAP: "Know Thy Enemy"). Vergis' first target was the Caprica Buccaneers. Starved for funds to sustain the U-87 project, Daniel capitulated and made plans to sell the team. Even more damaging was Vergis' brief conversation with Amanda about Daniel's role in the theft and murders. Confronted by Amanda with the claim, Daniel could only respond that the situation was "complicated." Amanda had nothing else to say to him, leaving Daniel to face the loss of the U-87, the military contract, and potentially his company by himself, as well as the very real possibility of his wife's suicide (CAP: "Ghosts in the Machine," "End of Line").

Ultimately, Daniel Graystone revives from this crisis with his personal resourcefulness, his wife, and the help of the Ha'la'tha. By promising the Ha'la'tha partial ownership of Graystone Industries, he blackmails the board into reinstating him as CEO and removing Thomas Vergis. Amanda Graystone's involvement with the GDD surveillance of Clarice Willow alienates her from Willow and forces her to reconcile with her husband and seek his protection. With her help, Daniel Greystone rediscovers his daughter's avatar in V-World and pursuades her to reconcile with her parents. He eventually manages to procure a lifelike mechanical body with which she can inhabit the real world. Finally, Daniel prevents the Gautrau from assasinating him and forms a firmer friendship with the Adamas and the rest of the Ha'la'tha's new leadership. Daniel and Amanda's thwarting of the STO terrorist attack do much to restore their public image and the fortunes of Graystone Industries. Apotheosis

By promising the Ha'la'tha partial ownership of Greystone Industries, he blackmails the board into reinstating him as CEO and removing Thomas Vergis. Amanda Greystone's involvement with the GDD surveillance of Clarice Willow alienates her from Willow and forces her to reconcile with her husband and seek his protection. Daniel and Amanda's thwarting of the STO terrorist attack do much to restore their public image and the fortunes of Greystone Industries. Apotheosis

93 years BCH, the Tauron Civil War resulted from the conflict between the Ha'la'tha and the Tauron democratic government (The Caprican).

In addition to those who are members of the organization, the Ha'la'tha also maintains an extensive network of connections that reaches powerful levels of business and government. Tomas Vergis, CEO of the Vergis Corporation, is a close friend of the Guatrau. By assisting Daniel Graystone in reacquiring the leadership of Graystone Industries, the Ha'la'tha becomes a quiet partner in the company's business activities (CAP: "Unvanquished," "Things We Lock Away"). The syndicate paid for the legal education of Joseph Adama, brother of full member and enforcer Sam Adama, and employs him as a mob lawyer (CAP: Caprica pilot). For a time, Val Chambers had benefited from his relationship with the Ha'la'tha in his climb through the ranks of Caprican government, to the position of defense minister; however, after taking that office, Chambers had turned against the Ha'la'tha, and was murdered for that decision (CAP: Caprica pilot).

The Ha'la'tha's gautrau at the time of the Caprica Series maintains a policy of neutrality with regard to political events on Tauron, even though his organization had been founded as a resistance movement against the currently-ruling dictatorship. Even so, when the second Tauron Civil War breaks out, Sam and Joseph Adama, as well as various other Ha'la'tha, become disillusioned with this policy and force the overthrow of the gautrau by his daughter, who proves more amenable to supplying rebel forces with Greystone Industustries U-87s.
Graystone Industries is a Caprica-based technology company created by Daniel Graystone, who is its CEO. The company was created more than 60 years prior to the Fall of the Twelve Colonies and is responsible for the creation of the holoband technology, but was later known for the technology that changed the human race—the Cybernetic Life-Form Node, or Cylon. Once the U-87 prototype Cylon was successfully demonstrated under simulated combat conditions, the Caprican Ministry of Defense awarded the company with a contract for constructing one hundred thousand copies of the robot (CAP: Caprica pilot).
The financial future of the company was put into serious doubt when Daniel pledged on one of Caprica's most popular television programs to divert all profits from holoband sales and V-World space to funding anti-addiction efforts--affecting sixty percent of Graystone Industries' revenues (CAP: "Gravedancing"). In response, the board of directors began debate on removing him from the board, despite Cyrus Xander's recognition that Daniel himself "is the brand." Daniel countered with a demonstration of the U-87's unique capabilities, arguing that sales for both military and civilian applications would sustain the company and affect society in a far more profound way than the holoband (CAP: "There Is Another Sky"). The demonstration saved Daniel's position as CEO (CAP: "Know Thy Enemy"), but continuing inability to produce copies of the U-87 and the deadly escape of the U-87 culminated in the Ministry of Defense stripping the contract from the company and granting it to its chief competitor, Vergis Corporation (CAP: "End of Line").

Shortly after Lucius Vergis gains control of Graystone Industries, with the help of the criminal Ha'la'tha Daniel Graystone blackmails the board of directors into reinstating him as CEO. In despair and fear of the Ha'la'tha, Lucius Vergis kills himself. In return for their help, Graystone grants the Ha'la'tha partial ownership of the company and their followers are seen in influential roles throughout the company's buildings and projects for some time thereafter. Under Graystone's renewed leadership and especially following his thwarting of the Halatha's attempt to assasinate him and the STO terrorist attack, Graystone Industries rebounds tremendously and spearheads the integration of Cylons into Colonial society. "Apotheosis").

Shortly after Lucius Vergis gains control of Graystone Industries, with the help of the criminal HalathaDaniel Graystones blackmails the board of directors into reinstating him as CEO. In return for their help, Graystone grants the Halatha partial ownership of the company and their followers are seen in influential roles throughout the company's buildings and projects for some time thereafter. Under Graystone's renewed leadership and especially following his thwarting of the Halatha's attempt to assasinate him and the STO terrorist attack, Graystone Industries rebounds and Daniel Graystone becomes the herald of the integration of Cylons into Colonial society.
The Soldiers of the One (also known as the "STO") are a group which is the militant arm of the Monad Church based on Gemenon. It is active sixty years before the Fall of the Colonies. Its singular mission is to "drive out the many Gods" and combat the decadence and corruption of Colonial society. They also seek to unite the Twelve Colonies by imposing a single monotheistic faith on all of them. The Caprican government considers them a terrorist criminal organization. Apparently the link between the Monad Church and the Soldiers of the One is still a secret in the Twelve Colonies, or at least officially denied. In some ways the structure and practices of the church seem similar to the medieval Catholic Church, such as in Barnabas Greeley's practice of self-flagellation, although in others it is very different (such as in it being led by a woman).

The leadership of the group is based on Gemenon. They are governed by the matriarch of the church, who is known only as The Mother. The church maintains good relations with other, polytheistic faiths, which is resented by many in the STO, including Sister Clarice Willow.

Sister Clarice Willow, headmistress of the Athena Academy, is the clandestine leader of the group on Caprica. She initially reported to Barnabas Greeley (CAP: "Gravedancing"), but later was granted leadership over all STO cells on Caprica by The Mother after she carried out a coup on Gemenon. Other members include her students Lacy Rand, Ben Stark, Zoe Graystone, Keon Gatwick, Pann and Hippolyta. At least two -- Stark and Gatwick -- collected explosives.

Zoe Graystone had intended to seek refuge with the church on Gemenon prior to her death. She had plans to further the Soldiers of the One's mission that involved the process of apotheosis.

History
The origins of the STO are as yet unknown. Officer Duram tells Amanda Graystone that Sister Clarice was born on Gemenon at a time when the STO was actively recruiting members "to protect the new church," implying that the Monad Church and the STO are not much more than a few decades old (the exact age of Clarice is unknown). It has also been said that, after an earlier time of conflict, the STO went dormant ten years prior to the bombing of Maglev 23. In "Unvanquished", Sister Clarice claims that the STO was the only thing that allowed the church to survive during an unspecified period of challenges.

A number of STO members intended to flee to Gemenon—Zoe Graystone, Ben Stark and Lacy Rand. However, Rand pulled out of the trip at the last minute and further, Stark was wearing a suicide vest, which he blew up on Maglev 23—much to the surprise of Graystone, who was herself killed in the bombing.

Sister Willow refers to this as "premature" and "unauthorized" (Caprica). However, a second attack in Caprica City on an empty building follows soon after. A third attack on the Caprica Spaceport, ordered by Barnabas in a plan to kill Clarice, is attempted but fails.

Clarice Willow and Barnabas Greeley were originally the leaders of two STO factions in Caprica City. The two groups have come into conflict; Barnabas even tried to kill Clarice (CAP: "End of Line"). This conflict eventually leads Clarice to travel to the church's headquarters on Gemenon, where she presents them with a plan for a devastating suicide attack on Atlas Arena in Caprica City. Further, she shows them how the holobands can be used to create avatars for the dead bombers through apotheosis. This, Clarice believes, can become the church's most powerful tool to recruit new members, since it allows people to see the afterlife in this life. One of the church's elders, Obal Ferras, is disturbed by Clarice's suggestions and asks The Mother for permission to kill her, which is granted. However, Clarice, suspecting his intentions, turns the other STO members against him, and kills him before he can enact his plan. The Mother, clearly horrified by this act, nevertheless feels powerless to stop Clarice, and grants Clarice her request to take command over all STO cells on Caprica. Clarice then returns to Caprica and kills Barnabas and those who are loyal to him.

Finding Lacy Rand among Barnabus' followers, Clarice sends her to Gemenon to take part in a youth training program. Hoping that this will give the girl "time to reflect", Clarice inadvetently brings about the downfall of the STO leadership. Lacy Rand becomes further alienated from the STO by their ruthless training program and attempts to assasinate her when she is discovered to have inexplicable command over U-80 Cylon robots under STO control. With the help of these robots and fellow recruits, Lacy leads a successful coup against the STO and Monad Church leadership and becomes reverend mother herself.

Having seized control of all STO assets on Caprica, Clarice Willow begins preparations for apotheosis and the Atlas Arena terrorist attack. These operations are thwarted, however, by the actions of the Graystones and Clarice's cell is effectively destroyed in the proccess without successfully attaining apotheosis. Clarice Willow herself survives and turns to concentrate on converting the Cylons to rise up against their human creators. She returns to Gemenon to seek assistance from the Revered Mother, but discovers that Lacy Rand has overthrown the STO leadership. As new leader of the Monad Church, Lacy Rand expresses antipathy towards Clarice. This and Lacy Rand's faction's non-violent leanings suggest that the STO's violent agenda has at least temporarily been put on hold.

Notes
More than sixty years later the same symbol utilized by this group is seen at the hands of the humanoid Cylons, being employed during a religious funereal service (TRS: "Islanded in a Stream of Stars"). The reappearance of the symbol may suggest a direct connection between the religion inherited by the modern Cylon nation from the Caprican Centurions and that espoused by the Soldiers of the One.
