The show opens with the statement "The Cylons where created by man. They rebelled. They evolved. They look and feel human. Some are programmed to think they are human. There are many copies and they have a Plan." While this is being said they show the Cylon Fleet.

Next, you are taken inside Galatica and you see two Ones being escorted to an airlock. Both of them are having a difference of opinion.

One A - "I was doing fine here, thanks for exposing me."

One B - "You weren't doing fine. Thank goodness. If you'd wiped out this fleet you would have made us ever more irredeemable in the eyes of our parents."

One A - "No, I would have proved us to be superior."

One B - "No, no see, I figured out what went wrong."

One A - "Well that's a very useful revelation to have, if your standing in front of an airlock."

One B - "None the less"

One A - "Our failure is obvious, we had our foot on the throat of humanity and we failed to step down hard enough."

One B - "That was our error. Have you learned nothing in all this time in the fleet. Because I learned a great deal among the rebels on Caprica. Every killing of a human being was a grievous error. You want to know why?"

One A - "I really don't."

One B - "Are you certain?" Because it's fascinating."

One A - "Listen brother. If you are right, that means this whole project was doomed from the beginning."

You see two Ones standing over the resurrection tubs of the “Final Five:” Ellen Tigh, Saul Tigh, Samuel T. Anders, Galen Tyrol and Tory Foster they are talking about what they “the Ones” might expect after their parents resurrect. One of the “Ones” plans on joining one of the mothers, “Ellen Tigh” on Picon since he has never experience a nuclear holocaust in person. The other “One” is going to make his way to Caprica to make the final arrangement with their contact.

Dr. Gaius Baltar is having a little conversation with a “Number Six” who has been posing as an agent of a company seeking defense contracts in exchange for his access to government mainframes she helped him design the navigation program used by the Colonial warships. However, she has been covertly creating backdoors in the program. Shortly after their goodbyes “Number Six” meats up with a “Number One” and passes off the access codes to the Colonial Defenses which will later be used in the attack.

Inside of Club Pink Moon on Picon, you find a “Number One” talking with Ellen Tigh about why she like olives. They introduce themselves to each other (there is a quick flash to her inside of the resurrection tub). The “Number One” order her another drink.

Meanwhile back at the Cylon Fleet - The Cylon Fleet jumps to there potions over the Twelve Colonies so there attack can begin.

The “Number One” ask Ellen why she is there stating she is meant for greater things.

''Caprica Pyramid Training Camp:''

You see Sam T. Anders is practicing Pyramid with his teammates.

Meanwhile the Cylon Fleet jumps in over the Twelve Colonies and begins to count down to the attack.

Back on Caprica in Delphi you see Tory Foster driving to a Airport/Spaceport (a quick flash to her in her resurrection tub).

The Cylon Fleet continues to make their final preparation for attack..

Back in Club Pink Moon on Picon, Ellen and the “Number One” continue the conversation about people learning their lessons.

The Cylons Fleet closes in on the Colonies to begin their attack. The hybrid uses the backdoors the “Number Six” had created in the defense system. The vipers of the Colonial Fleet see the Basestars and raiders but the Battlestars won’t confirm they are there since the defense system is starting to crash. The Cylons scan the Battlestars and vipers and they all go dead in space. The Cylons begin to launch their nuclear weapons onto the Colonies.

Back at the Pyramid Training Grounds Sam and his team continue to practice as the bombs start to fall. (There is a quick flash to Sam in his resurrection tub). The bombs continue to fall.

Ellen and “Number One” carry on there conversation about sell yourself out.

The bombs make their final decent.

Tory is still driving to the Airport/Spaceport in Delphi, Caprica talk with someone on the car phone.

The Pyramid team continues its practice and the coach shows Sam up by making a great goal.

The warheads arm for their final dispersement. The coach toasts his goal with the team doctor (who really is a Humanoid Cylon a "Number Four").

Tory continues her drive.

The warhead launch out of their capsule and make their way to their final targets.

Sam falls to the ground giving into his defeat by the coach. The warheads are launched and begin to proceed to their targets. The destruction of the Colonies has begun. You are taken through several screens of the destruction throughout the Colonies.

Sam says “This has happened before.” The Pyramid team watches as the bombs go off near them. You see the team doctor crack a smile. You again are taken around the Colonies showing the attack by the Cylons. The progress reports come in. (See Noteworthy dialogue below). You see the screen of each Planet listed burning from the attack.

You now see Galactica and the CIC as they receive word of the attack. Saul Tigh the first officer thinks is just a joke being play on Commander Adama since he is about to retire. (A flash to Saul in his resurrection tub). There are some shots of different Humanoid Cylons throughout the Colonies just after the attacks. Back on Picon Ellen has been hurt badly and also says “This has happened before.” When she looks up at the “Number One” she asks if she is going to die. His reply is “No, not when you have so much to learn.”

Commander Adama makes the announcement to the crew of the ship about the attack on the Colonies. While he does this, you see rescue operation beginning through the Colonies. You see Galen “Chief” Tyrol making a motivation speech to his crew to get the Galactica ready for battle (there is a quick flash to him in his resurrection tub).

Back on Occupied-Caprica you see the Cylon Centurions collecting the damaged ones and bringing them to a container for what appears to be repairs. The Pyramid team sees this and debates what they should do. Meanwhile, on Colonial One they bring aboard survivors from Caprica. Back on Galactica Commander Adama finds a cryptic message left for him by Baltar. '''“There are only 12 Cylon models.” ''' You see Baltar in his cabin in shock and disbelief as to what has just happened.

Capable of atmospheric flight, the Viper Mark II is a single-seat craft possessing two kinetic energy weapons ([[Weapons in the Re-imagined Series#Viper and Cylon Raider|KEW]]s). Hard-points beneath the wings allow missiles, munitions pods and other ordnance to be mounted ([[The Hand of God (RDM)|The Hand of God]]).

The Viper Mark I entered Colonial service shortly before the outbreak of the [[Cylon War]].{{citation needed}} However, it is this Mark II variant (designed specifically for use with the Colonial [[Galactica type battlestar|battlestars]]) that has garnered the most recognition. The fighter served with distinction throughout the Cylon War, proving to be a capable fighting vehicle and winning renown across the [[Twelve Colonies (RDM)|Twelve Colonies]]; the Mark II is regarded as instrumental in ensuring that the Colonials did not lose the original Cylon War <ref>Its iconic status is not unlike that of the real world [[wikipedia:Supermarine_Spitfire|Supermarine Spitfire]], which is held in great esteem in the countries where it served - particularly Great Britain. Many Spitfires are preserved today as museum pieces, just as the Mk. II Vipers were aboard ''Galactica''.</ref>.

The Mark II remained in service after the end of the conflict, but was subsequently superseded by newer models. At the time of the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies|Cylon holocaust]], the sleek [[Viper Mark VII|Mark VII]] is the front-line variant of the Viper design. It retains the Mark II's general layout, but utilizes fully networked systems to provide superior battle management and combat information for the pilot.

Seemingly similar to the Cylon Raider in performance as well as weaponry, a Mark II is capable of holding its own against many times its number of Raiders in the hands of a seasoned pilot. ''Galactica''<nowiki>'s</nowiki> Viper contingent regularly fights off large Raider wings; in one particular instance, [[Kara Thrace]] defeats eight Raiders [[Hot Dog|almost single-handedly]] ([[Act of Contrition]]).

As part of its use in the [[Cylon War]], the Mark II was initially designed to resist Cylon attempts at disabling or damaging its flight controls <ref>The joystick used in the Mark II is a replica of real-life F/A-18 Hornet and F-15 Eagle</ref>. Given the number of analog gauges and controls, its likely that the Mark II was intended to be flown entirely without computer assistance in fear of compromise by an electronic attack. The Mark II is a long, sleek vehicle with specialized features for space attacks, reconnaissance, and atmospheric flight.

The fore section comprises the nose back to the cockpit. Located there are the forward [[RCS]] systems for maneuvering the craft; the forward landing gear; the main [[avionics]] and sensor packages and the single-seat cockpit.

The stern comprises the main engines, numerous RCS maneuvering jets, fuel tanks, wings and vertical stabilizer. The wings themselves contain the kinetic energy weapons, their munitions storage and feeds. Mounting points beneath the wings allow missiles, munitions pods and other items to be rack-mounted ([[The Hand of God (RDM)|The Hand of God]]).

The wing's roots contain the main landing gear, retracted during flight. The Mark II's shape is distinctive because of the offset "intakes" mounted just behind the cockpit. The port / starboard "intakes" incorporate small but powerful reverse thrust engines that can quickly counter a Viper's forward momentum in an emergency ([[The Hand of God (RDM)|The Hand of God]]).

The Mark II can rotate 180 degrees vertically in .35 seconds ([[Act of Contrition]]). It accelerates at six to seven G's ([[The Hand of God (RDM)]]), or 60 to 70 m/s²

== Overview ==

Capable of atmospheric flight, the Viper Mark II is a single-seat craft possessing two kinetic energy weapons ([[Weapons in the Re-imagined Series#Viper and Cylon Raider|KEW]]s). Hard-points beneath the wings allow missiles, munitions pods and other ordnance to be mounted ([[The Hand of God (RDM)|The Hand of God]]).

The Viper Mark I entered Colonial service shortly before the outbreak of the [[Cylon War]].{{citation needed}} However, it is this Mark II variant (designed specifically for use with the Colonial [[Galactica type battlestar|battlestars]]) that has garnered the most recognition. The fighter served with distinction throughout the Cylon War, proving to be a capable fighting vehicle and winning renown across the [[Twelve Colonies (RDM)|Twelve Colonies]]; the Mark II is regarded as instrumental in ensuring that the Colonials did not lose the original Cylon War <ref>Its iconic status is not unlike that of the real world [[wikipedia:Supermarine_Spitfire|Supermarine Spitfire]], which is held in great esteem in the countries where it served - particularly Great Britain. The Mark II remained in service after the end of the conflict, but was subsequently superseded by newer models. At the time of the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies|Cylon holocaust]], the sleek [[Viper Mark VII|Mark VII]] is the front-line variant of the Viper design. It retains the Mark II's general layout, but utilizes fully networked systems to provide superior battle management and combat information for the pilot.

Seemingly similar to the Cylon Raider in performance as well as weaponry, a Mark II is capable of holding its own against many times its number of Raiders in the hands of a seasoned pilot. The Mark II is a long, sleek vehicle with specialized features for space attacks, reconnaissance, and atmospheric flight.

The fore section comprises the nose back to the cockpit. Located there are the forward [[RCS]] systems for maneuvering the craft; the forward landing gear; the main [[avionics]] and sensor packages and the single-seat cockpit.

The stern comprises the main engines, numerous RCS maneuvering jets, fuel tanks, wings and vertical stabilizer. The wings themselves contain the kinetic energy weapons, their munitions storage and feeds. Mounting points beneath the wings allow missiles, munitions pods and other items to be rack-mounted ([[The Hand of God (RDM)|The Hand of God]]).

The wing's roots contain the main landing gear, retracted during flight. The Mark II's shape is distinctive because of the offset "intakes" mounted just behind the cockpit. The port / starboard "intakes" incorporate small but powerful reverse thrust engines that can quickly counter a Viper's forward momentum in an emergency ([[The Hand of God (RDM)|The Hand of God]]).

== Performance ==

The Mark II can rotate 180 degrees vertically in .35 seconds ([[Act of Contrition]]). It accelerates at six to seven G's ([[The Hand of God (RDM)]]), o 60 to 70 m/s^2.

* Plans are drawn up for the attack on the Cylon base on the asteroid, and [[Gaius Baltar]] is involved in preparations when Starbuck and Tigh show him recon photos of the refinery. They cannot simply nuke the base, as the radiation would render the tylium inert, so the best plan would be to destroy the containers holding the volatile unrefined tylium precursor. Tigh and Starbuck want Baltar to point out what it is, even though he has no idea what it looks like. In his mind, Baltar asks his virtual Number Six for help, but she tells him it is in God's hands and He will "tell" Baltar where to point. Baltar picks an object in the base, simply as a wild guess (though he doesn't tell the others that). Baltar is terrified, telling Six he didn't hear God's voice, but she reassures him that "God doesn't always speak in ''words''".
* Apollo is concerned that everyone thinks Starbuck is a better pilot than he is and would be better leading the mission. Starbuck cannot fly in the attack, because in the [[Weight Room|weight room]] Commander Adama demonstrates that her knee has not yet fully recovered from its [[You Can't Go Home Again|injury]]. On the hangar deck, Commander Adama encourages Apollo, telling him he thinks Apollo really can pull off this mission, because he is his son.
* The attack is launched, and [[Battle for the Tylium Asteroid|the battle]] commences: civilian mining ships jump in on one side of the Cylon base pretending to be on a survey mission, drawing off some Raiders from the base, while ''Galactica'' jumps in on the other side and launches a squadron of Vipers against it, which are confronted by the base's reserve Raiders. The Raiders sent against the mining ships peel off and advance with the others on ''Galactica''. Everything seems to be going wrong, but then Adama reveals that this was a feint, apparently only he and those directly involved in implementing the plan aware of the real plan.
*A second squadron of Vipers, led by Apollo, launches from inside of the mining ships. While appearing to be merely bait, and dismissed as such by the Cylons, the ships are the real thrust of the attack. With the raiders lured out of position by ''Galactica'', Apollo and his wing have a clear flight to the base.
*Once the Vipers reach the moon, however, things are far from easy: the Cylon base has a formidable anti-air defense system, and the Vipers' missile attack fails as the Cylons are able to jam the missiles' tracking systems.
*In a move of reckless improvisation worthy of Starbuck, Apollo avoids the Cylon defense grid by flying through its tylium mining tunnels to the center of the base, then dropping a pair of explosive charges at the supposed tylium-precursor container.
*Much to Baltar's surprise, his wild guess at which container held the volatile tylium-precursor was correct: as Apollo flies away, the entire base explodes with the force of a 3 kiloton nuclear warhead.
*With their base destroyed, the Cylon Raiders go into a panic and are easy prey for ''Galactica''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s Vipers to mop up. All planes return to ''Galactica'' in a moment of celebration. Civilian mining ships will be able to get enough tylium fuel from the asteroid to last the Fleet several years.
*In Baltar's dream world, he expresses his astonishment to Number Six: Baltar "realizes" that the only "logical" explanation is that God truly did guide his hand to the right point on the Cylon base. *The introduction of the prophesy of [[Pythia]] further link the series' mythology to the ancient Greece of our own planet. In Greek mythology, the Pythia was the priestess at Apollo's oracle in Delphi. The name itself comes from Python, the dragon slain by Apollo. The Pythia operated as a vehicle for Apollo's will to be known to those on earth. A believer would make a sacrifice and present a question to a priest. The priest would then present the question to the Pythia. The Pythia sat on a bronze tripod in the adytum, or inner chamber of Apollo's temple. In this sacred chamber the spirit of Apollo overcame the Pythia and inspired the prophecy.
**Pythia in ancient Greece was the Oracle of Delphi – and on Caprica, Helo and Sharon are making for the religious center of [[Delphi]].
*Following his seeking God’s forgiveness ([[33]]) and his repentance of his sins ([[Six Degrees of Separation]]), Baltar finally becomes God’s "instrument". He literally becomes the hand of God referenced in the episode title: he is the one that points out the target that will destroy the Cylon base.
