The Caprica Buccaneers are a pyramid team from Caprica, captained by Samuel T. Anders.

According to the Buccaneers, they were training in the mountains at the time of the Cylon nuclear bombardment of the colony. Shielded from the shockwaves and a bulk of the nuclear fallout, they managed to round up hitchhikers and other survivors camping in the mountains into a sizable resistance force. From there, they sieged supply depots, hospitals (for anti-radiation meds) and destroyed Cylon convoys. (Resistance)

The Buccaneers' team roster consisted of Anders, "Jo-man", "Rally", "Ten Point", Sue-Shaun, "Gripkey" and Morris Fink.

With her comments, Kara Thrace - who mentioned in Resistance that a "bum knee" robbed her of a professional pyramid career - either wasn't a fan of the team, or was a sharp critic. While questioning Anders' legitimacy, at gunpoint, she demands that he tell her how many "foul breaks" the Buccaneers had in the playoff against Aerelon. Anders tells Thrace that one foul break was called back, after instant replay, suggesting a parallel to the National Football League, in which officials may review replays after a play before making a final decision.

Notes
American viewers would recognize some veiled references to the National Football League:
*The team's nickname may be a reference to the 2003 Super Bowl champion, the Tampa bay Buccaneers
*Helo notes that he lost money on a playoff game, paralleling the NFL, in that wagering is part of the game.
*The use of instant replay by referees, as noted above.
While it is not clear whether or not he was a prisoner aboard the Astral Queen, he vocalized his support for Tom Zarek, espousing that Zarek was a freedom fighter and hero. He was part of the Sagittaron delegation that boarded Cloud 9 with Valance, the believed-to-be assassin out for President Laura Roslin.

Grimes first gained the attention of Captain Lee Adama when Grimes tried to rough up a person who called Zarek a murderer and terrorist. Later on, Grimes attempted to assault the captain in a bar on Cloud 9, only to be subdued by Adama (with assistance from Kara Thrace).

During Adama and Thrace's interrogation of Valance, Adama claimed that Grimes gave him up; it remains unknown whether or not there is any truth to this, given their "good cop, bad cop" interrogation routine on Valance. What happened to Grimes after the altercation remains unknown as well (Colonial Day).
D'anna Biers is known in the Fleet as a Colonial reporter for the Fleet News Service (Final Cut). Biers appears to be more of a tabloid rumor-and-innuendo format news journalist and less of the conventional Fleet journalist types such as James McManus.

Biers is investigating the shootings of four civilians during a military intervention authorized by Colonel Tigh in what she dubs for sensationalism's sake as the "Gideon massacre". Her efforts to interview Galactica's crew are constantly thwarted by military protocol and stonewalling by Commander Adama, who privately acknowledges Tigh's mistakes, but seems adamant not to render any punishment.

The social and political repercussions of the Gideon incident become too much for President Laura Roslin to ignore. The citizens of the Fleet are becoming critical of Galactica and wonder if the military places itself at a different level of self-responsibility than its citizens. Working with Commander Adama, President Roslin invites Biers aboard Colonial One and proposes something interesting to the reporter. Adama and Roslin will give Biers "unlimited" access to Galactica and her crew to create a documentary on what it is like to be the last defensive group of the Twelve Colonies, as well as allowing her to interview many of the crew on the Gideon incident.

Biers' is initially given a tour of the battlestar by Petty Officer Anastasia Dualla, but finds the nuts-and-bolts technology and layout information boring. She and her photographer, Bell, prefer to record and interview the candid moments of Galactica's crew--even going so far as entering the senior pilot's quarters, where a scantily-clad Lee Adama finds the intrusion most unwelcome.

Biers begins in-depth personal interviews with many of the crew, including Dualla, Lieutenants Gaeta, Margaret Edmonson, Kara Thrace and Karl Agathon, as well as attempts to interview command staff such as Colonel Tigh. Of all the interviews, she desperately wants to ask Tigh many questions on his decisions in the Gideon incident, but Tigh stonewalls and evades her questions, partially from his annoyance in the situation, but also because he is distracted by a mysterious death threat left in his quarters: a verse of a poem from a Caprican poet known as Kataris.

Biers appears to be in the right place at the wrong times throughout her documentary filming. She captures the growing behavioral problems with Lieutenant Louanne Katraine, a Viper pilot who later crash-lands her Viper after failing a routine landing and is found to have been abusing stims because of the pressures she endures from the loss of her family and friends as well as the demands of being a Viper pilot. Biers also captures the sabotage to a Raptor that was intended to shuttle Colonel Tigh to Cloud Nine for some downtime for the colonel as well as a bit of business on orders of Commander Adama.

As Biers passes through sickbay during her documentary, she makes a highly unusual find. Sharon Valerii is alive and being treated in sickbay. The existence of this second copy of the known Cylon infiltrator, who was thought to be dead by the Fleet, is too much for Biers not to document. However, Commander Adama intercepts Biers and demands that she give him the intriguing footage of Valerii. Biers pointedly asks why Adama is harboring this known Cylon in secret aboard the ship, and suggests that news of Valerii's existence could ruin Adama in the eyes of the Fleet. Adama evades the question and redirects it at Biers, asking whether exposure of this second Valerii's existence to the Fleet would do anyone any good. She surrenders a tape to Adama, but unknown to him, Biers retains the actual footage of Valerii in secret for herself.

Biers gets an opportunity to document what happens in CIC during a Cylon Raider raid at the Fleet.

As Biers is editing the documentary, reviewing the footage from the senior pilot's quarters, she sees Joe Palladino on his bunk with a copy of a book by Kataris. Biers' knowledge of Palladino's involvement in the Gideon incident immediately determines that Palladino is the likely suspect in the death threats. She and Bell grab their photo gear and rush to Tigh's quarters to find that Palladino has bound Tigh's wife, Ellen and threatens to shoot Colonel Tigh with a sidearm. Tigh manages to talk the agitated lieutenant down and disarm him, where marines take the wayward Viper pilot away.

Bier's final documentary is reviewed by Tigh, Adama, and President Roslin. While Tigh is initially perturbed at the documentary's unshiny look into Colonial military life, Adama finds it a good story, "warts and all." The documentary is broadcast to the Fleet, with Biers concluding the documentary with a rousing monologue:

:"I came to Galactica to tell a story. In all honesty, I thought I knew what that story was before I ever set foot here. How an arrogant military let their egos get in the way of doing their job safeguarding the lives of the civilian population. But I found the truth was more complex than that. These people aren't Cylons. They're not robots blindly following orders and polishing their boots. They're people. Deeply flawed, yes, but deeply human too. And maybe that's saying the same thing. What struck me the most is that despite it all: the hardships, the stress, the ever-present danger of being killed-- despite all that, they never give up. Never lie down in the road and let the truck run them over. They wake up in the morning, put on their uniforms, and do their jobs. Every day, no pay. No rest. No hope of ever laying down the burden and letting someone else do the job. There are no relief troops coming, no Colonial fleet training new recruits every day. The people on Galactica are it. They are the thin line of blue separating us from the Cylons.

:"Lieutenant Gaeta told me a remarkable statistic. Not a single member of Galactica's crew has asked to resign. Not one. Think about that. If you wore the uniform, wouldn't you want to quit? To step aside and say, "Enough. Let someone else protect the Fleet." I know I would. But then, I don't wear a uniform. Most of us don't, most of us never will. The story of Galactica isn't that people make bad decisions under pressure. It's that those mistakes are the exception. Most of the time, the men and women serving under Commander Adama get it right. The proof is that our fleet survives. And with Galactica at our side, we will endure. This is D'anna Biers, Fleet News Service."

But the Fleet is not the only group that sees the documentary. A group of humanoid Cylons on Caprica--copies of Aaron Doral, Number Six, another Sharon Valerii copy and one other person, hidden from view initially in the theater where they sit, watch Bier's documentary (including, surprisingly, the footage of the Sharon Valerii copy in sickbay that Adama had presumably confiscated) with great interest. The Valerii copy chuckles in surprise at the survival of her pregnant doppleganger on Galactica, and the others are very intent on monitoring the pregnancy and survival of the Cylon/human hybrid fetus. The mysterious 4th person in the theater is revealed: a second copy of D'anna Biers, which notes that the Raiders that intercepted Galactica were used to relay the documentary and its forbidden footage of Valerii from themselves to a nearby Cylon fleet for transmission to Caprica, at the price of some loss of Cylon material.

Notes
D'anna Biers is one of two Humano-Cylons revealed in Season 2 so far. Her ultimate goals may have originally been to turn the civilians against Galactica, but this plan may have been later abandoned. Her current goal seems to be to keep tabs on Caprica-Valerii, being held in Galactica's brig.

Since Biers has not appeared in past episodes that feature the fleet-wide press, it can be speculated that prior to the Cylon Attack, she was more of a tabloid investigative reporter than a mainstream journalist.

Biers' existence as a Cylon infiltrator brings the total number of revealed models to six as of "Final Cut". This leaves six unknown Humano-Cylon models as of this episode. Speculation on other characters and their true identities as Colonials or Cylon infiltrators is still ongoing.

In behind the scenes interviews, Lucy Lawless has said that to contrast her character with Galactica's crew, D'Anna still wears fashionable clothes, make up, and jewelry, probably because she has access to some form of black market in the Fleet.
"Leoben Conoy"

Callum Keith Rennie was born in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear in the North-east of England in 1960. However, he was raised and educated in Canada after his family emigrated to Edmonton, Alberta when he was four years old. Graduating from Strathcona High School, he had intended to go to college, but instead took his student loan (some $5,000) and purchased a truck and went fishing.

Following this, he sought work as a mountaineer, supporting this goal by taking on a wide range of manual labour ranging from cooking through to laying railway track. His initial adult brush with acting came when he took a job doing voice work at CJSR, the University of Alberta's campus radio station. This lead to 12 months of steady work writing and producing, including producing a play at a local theatre, which in turn lead to him appearing on stage in "American Buffalo".

Following this, he tried his luck as an actor in Vancouver, without success; problems with drug dealing followed and he was reduced to a string of low-paying jobs before he moved to Toronto and enrolled in the Bruhanski Theatre Studio. While studying, he appeared on stage in "Lost Souls and Missing Persons", and as a result was offered work at the Shaw Festival at Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Again, things did not work out. After a season at the festival, he returned to Vancouver where he started work on another play, but never completed it. There then followed a 10-year relationship with alcohol which only ended in 1993, when his left eye was damaged in a barroom brawl.

Following this incident, Rennie put his house in order, stopped drinking and concentrated on his film career. A host of critically-acclaimed films followed. These Included the "mockumentary" "Hard Core Logo" about a rock band on the road to ruin. despite his apprehension in taking on the role of Billy Tallant in the film, Rennie came away from it not only with critical plaudits, but also with a love of rock music fused with his upbringing on punk rock. He remains friendly with the lead singer of "The Headstones," Hugh Dillon, who played the lead singer of the punk rock band in "Hard Core Logo."

He also had a string of guest-starring roles in the major genre television series of the 1990s: The X-Files, Highlander, The Commish, Outer Limits, Forever Night, as well as a starring role in the children's television series, My Life and a Dog.

However, it was 1997 that brought Rennie to the attention of the international television audience, when he took over from David Marciano in the hit comedy / drama series Due South. The role came about after Marciano declined to continue in the role of Detective Ray Vecchio, and Rennie was given a unique one-year contract as Detective Stanley Kowalski, who was "covering" for the Vecchio character, who was supposedly deep undercover. The one-year contract meant Rennie could avoid being tied-into a long-running television series, something that he preferred not to do, having already turned down the semi-regular role of Alex Krychek in the X-Files.

Following the end of Due South, Rennie returned to theatrical films, taking supporting roles in a wide range of films, as well as guest-starring in TV series such as The DaVinci Inquest (recurring role as "Bob Marlowe" over 5 episodes), Mutant X, Dark Angel and Tru Calling.

Rennie is currently single, and lives with his dog, Alberta and cat, Cleek. He enjoys playing golf and also paints (and has sold a number of his works).

The Blackbird is a prototype Colonial stealth fighter craft constructed by Chief Petty Officer Galen Tyrol, his deck crews, and other members of Galactica. This craft was meant to supplement the Viper, given the issues in maintaining the remaining craft aboard the battlestar. Chief Tyrol had originally intended just to build a standard Viper but ended up building a ship that was of more value to Galactica than another Viper.

Design and Technology
The Blackbird is designed to use the Viper launch tubes, and therefore shares the same general shape. It is built more for speed than for maneuverability. If it is armed, it likely fires the same ammunition as typical Vipers, though this has not yet been demonstrated.

It does not use metal for its skin since this metal was reserved for Viper repairs. Instead, on Karl Agathon's suggestion, the Blackbird uses a carbon composite material, which makes it largely invisible to DRADIS scanning.

Along with the usual RCS mechanisms for directional control, the Blackbird is powered by obsolete DDG-62 engines (designed by Laird, a civilian aeronautical engineer) that came from the flight deck of a Colonial fleet ship named Baah Pakal. One must speculate that since a typical Viper's engines are vulnerable to heat-seeking missiles (Mini-Series), these must be as well. This would compromise its stealth features during powered flight. (This is less of a disadvantage in space than in atmospheric flight; a spacecraft's inertia is not affected by gravity, friction, and other factors an atmospheric-bound craft would be, and thus can fly indefinitely without firing its engines.)

The "Laura"
The first prototype was dubbed "Laura", in honor of President Laura Roslin. It was piloted for the first time by Kara Thrace.

Here is a breakdown of the people who aided CPO Galen Tyrol in its construction:

* Anastasia Dualla, troubleshooting of communication systems
* Anthony Figurski
* Cally
* Jammer
* Seelix
* Karl Agathon, suggested the use of carbon composite materials for the Blackbird's skin
* Saul Tigh, offered the DDG-62 engines
* Lee Adama

Colonel Tigh's was originally vocal in his belief that the project was a waste of time, but later provided assistance in procuring the DDG-62 engines. Others among Tyrol's own deck crew also at first believed the project to be a waste of time, which was mostly noted through their initial reactions to Tyrol's proposal. However, Commander William Adama believed that the project offered hope and purpose, therefore permitting it to continue despite the crisis with the Cylon logic bomb that infected the Galacticas systems (Flight of the Phoenix).

Notes
* The Blackbird may be capable of making FTL Jumps. While this has not been demonstrated as yet in the ship's debut episodes, the possibility is likely as Kara Thrace "acquired" the Blackbird to do her own recon of a mysterious Cylon fleet while Lee Adama and the Pegasus CAG flew a Raptor, the only small Colonial military vessel known to have FTL ability, to scout for the Cylon fleet ("Pegasus"). Since an attack would be very likely if the Cylon fleet were in sublight range, only an FTL-capable craft could make the trip. Else, the Blackbird is very fast and fuel-conservative, and could make the trip (albeit in a longer time) without the need for FTL engines. If the Blackbird is FTL-capable, there may have been enough room to add an unused FTL drive from a scrapped Raptor, perhaps the one from the destroyed Raptor that crash-landed on Kobol from "Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I."
*Carbon composites are a family of materials used in lightweight or high-temperature-resistant construction, of which a type is used in the nose and leading edges of the wings of NASA's Space Shuttle Orbiter. Carbon composites are somewhat fragile, so impacts (even one from a champagne bottle, which Laura Roslin jokingly attempted to do as she christened the ship) may cause the material to splinter or break. It was damage to this material that caused the destruction of Space Shuttle Columbia on STS-107.
*Executive Producer David Eick stated in his video blog that the Blackbird is "not a Viper", so it is not classed as a modified Viper model ("Viper Mark VIII", etc), but is an entirely distinct craft.
*The fighter's nickname creates a curious comparison with her namesake, Laura Roslin. The frail, but influential President Roslin and her rapid, secretive actions in her quest for Earth's location (including diverting Lt. Thrace from her original mission to destroy the Kobol basestar) as well as her savvy political work in "Colonial Day", are humorously similar in perspective to the abilities of "Laura", a structually weak, but highly agile and initially underestimated stealth fighter. Like President Roslin (the only known surviving official of the pre-holocaust Colonial government), the Blackbird is a unique commodity.
