== Overview ==

'''Carl Lumbly''' was born and grew up in Minneapolis, where he attended South High School. There he pursued academics and sport as arts, including theatre, were not emphasised in the curriculum. Following high school, he attended McAlester College, where he considered pursuing medicine or law after guidance from his father. He ultimately decided to pursue a major in English, while he took part in student productions like "Guys and Dolls". Upon graduation Carl sought work as a technical writer for 3M while pursuing part time work as a reporter for the Associated Press.

== Career ==

In the mid-70s he joined Rigg's workshop, where he performed in a variety of satirical revues. He left Minnesota, moving to San Francisco and then L.A. where on both occasions he landed on-stage roles opposite Danny Glover. Soon after, Carl was cast as Marcus Petrie in the hit televeision series Cagney and Lacey, a role he continued to play for six years, bringing him steady work and recognition as a television actor. In 2001 he joined the cast of Alias, and after the show's conclusion in 2006 has joined the cast of [[Battlestar Galactica (RDM)|Battlestar Galactica]] for its third season. His first appearance will be in the seventh episode entitled "[[Hero]]".

The '''Armistice Station Officer''', known as '''Colonel Wakefield''' according to the [[Battlestar Galactica (2005 Novel)|novelization of the Miniseries]], was assigned to the [[Armistice Station]], where he would represent the [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)|Twelve Colonies]] to attempt their continuation of diplomatic relations between the exiled [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylons]] and humans. He is also the father of [[Boxey (RDM)|Boxey]].

Col. Wakefield is the first member of the Colonial Fleet to see the Cylons in over 40 years when two upgraded [[Cylon Centurion]]s and someone that appears to be a strikingly beautiful human female arrive at the station. This female is actually [[Number Six]], a [[Cylon agent]]. While the Centurions look on menacingly, Six grabs the Armistice Officer and forcibly kisses him. He dies when a Cylon [[Basestar (RDM)|basestar]] destroys the station with missiles, signaling the start of the [[Cylon Attack]] ([[Miniseries]]).

Col. Wakefield was apparently assigned Armistice Station duty by [[Fleet Headquarters]], which sends a general message on the status of all [[FTL]]-capable ships that were able to jump to the Armistice Station to aid the Courier officer when he fails to report or return to Headquarters. Commander [[William Adama|Adama]], on receiving this message from Headquarters from ''[[Galactica]]'s'' Watch Officer, Lieutenant [[Felix Gaeta|Gaeta]], indicates that the battlestar's scheduled decommissioning ceremonies later that day would make them a bit too busy to help ([[Miniseries]]).

== Notes ==
The actor portraying Col. Wakefield, Ryan Robbins, underwent a significant transformation through makeup and prosthetics in order to appear older than he really was. The original script of the Mini-Series called for the opening to show a young Col. Wakefield repeatedly visiting Armistice Station over the 40 years between the end of the Cylon War and the Attack on the Colonies and progressively aging with each visit. Multiple scenes with Robbins in various age-enhanced makeup were filmed, however all of them except the final scene where [[Number Six|Six]] makes her entrance were cut.

The frak (excuse me for the word) they delay the show for October?! Anyone knows some information? I'm really upset about it. REALLY. Especially, after I saw [[Lay Down Your Burdens, part II]]...
--[[User:Nyiz|Nyiz]] 12:48, 12 March 2006 (CST)

:The answer is simple (and indeed, obvious): "[[Black Market]]". Black Market is the worst. episode. ever of Battlestar Galactica, and the saving grace is that Ron himself said "I think this episode is bad and I'm ashamed that we made it"....which, might I add, is more than those jackasses at Voyager and Enterprise ever did for us! They insisted that the crap they were shoveling at us was great television.---But I digress. The point is, season one was 13 episodes long (it's a standard-length "trial season") but for season 2 they got picked up for 20 episodes (full season length for a Scifi Channel show, like the Stargates). Ron Moore basically admitted in his blog that they got really pressed for time because of the extra episodes, had to do Black Market in a hurry, and ended up with a peace of crap. The editing is bad, the dialog is wooden, etc. etc. ("[[Sacrifice]]" wasn't too great either, but I think that's just a result of being a show that had to serve the purpose of killing Billy off, and it was well executed nonetheless).------------>So basically, the running theory is that they're taking longer to make season 3....'''so they can do a better job, and never have a bad episode like "Black Market" again, and instead have the movie-quality episodes that proliferated in Season 1 and Season 2.0'''.--[[User:The Merovingian|The Merovingian]] 13:10, 12 March 2006 (CST)

::Why I didn't think about that? You are right. Black Market-Scar-Sacrifice was a series of crap episodes, (well, Scar was not that crap, but I didn't like it) but startnig with ''[[The Captain's Hand]]'' they made excellent quality of episodes again. If this is the cost for making good episodes, then I can wait a few more months. --[[User:Nyiz|Nyiz]] 05:23, 14 March 2006 (CST)

== Ranks/Ceremonials ==
I went through and fixed most of the ranks and ceremonial titles for Season 3. There were a few I left, but for many of them I simply removed the rank altogether for people on New Caprica, since it's no known if they're still active military personnel or not. One exception was Starbuck, because Tyrol specifically addresses her by her rank at the end of LDYB Part II. [[User:Joemc72|Joe McCullough]] 12:14, 13 March 2006 (CST)
:I think you should have held off on removing individuals' ranks because mostlikely because of their circumstances, ex-militaries would retain their title and rank after leaving the service much as was done in the American South for centuries. I plantation owner would be called Colonel because when he was younger he served in the army or militia as that rank even though he's been retired from duty for decades. In the colonial case, since as we see, there's always the chance of a cylon return, they'd probably maintain their last rank in the case of being called back into service. --[[User:StrayCat0|StrayCat0]] 14:01, 15 March 2006 (MST)

== Hero ==
Should there be a new page created for the the so-called episode "Hero" spoiled by David Eick during his interview on iFMagazine? He talked about a script relating to "a revelation about something truly egregious and illegal that Adama was guilty of doing during the days leading up to the attack, and how he has kept the revelation of that incident from rearing it’s head." There seems to be enough to start an episode page but he didn't say which episode it will be, whether it's one of the 1st 3 "trilogy", right after that, or later in the season. But he did in fact elude to it so I think it should be documented. I don't know. I thought maybe one of the more BSG Wiki Gurus could have a better idea of how to handle this. --[[User:StrayCat0|StrayCat0]] 14:01, 12 May 2006 (MST)
: As long as it comes from info cited by Eick himself, we're fine with that. What I would do is not worry about where the episode is placed in the chronology, and create the page. When more facts reveal themselves later on, we can worry about where exactly this piece of the puzzle should go, which is a minor detail in my view. -- [[User:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|Joe Beaudoin]] [[User talk:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|So say we all]] - [[Battlestar Wiki:Site support|Donate]] 10:11, 12 May 2006 (CDT)
== Additional episodes of Season 3 ==

I may have found legitimate verification of the titles "Collaborators" and "Torn" for episodes 4 and 5 of season 3. On the website www.sidesexpress.com(this site is for Agents and Managers), a subsite for a staffing company called The Go Between, Inc., website http://www.gobetween.com/, and it looks like looking for casting for BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, #304 Collaborators, and BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, #305 Torn. The site requires a password that I don't know how to get to go beyond this point for details but it is reasonable to say that these are official, if possibly not perminent, names for these episodes. Then again, on the page for Actors, www.showfax.com, they don't have links for those episodes that would list roles that are being cast for. I found a few names of characters for Stargate Atlantis & SG-1 among others being cast for specific episodes on this page but not for BSG. So further information on these episodes other than the names, I haven't found anything on this site. The only thing is: this should be enough verification to create pages, or page placeholders, with these names for these episodes. Opinions? --[[User:StrayCat0|StrayCat0]] 09:22, 2 June 2006 (PST)
:For the path from www.sidesexpress, you have to select Vancouver, then episodes and you will see the episode names, but here's the end web address: http://www.sidesexpress.com/se_index.cfm?task=pname&locid=5&pt=1 --[[User:StrayCat0|StrayCat0]] 09:29, 2 June 2006 (PST)
::Our curent spoiiler policy is that unless Ron Moore, one of the writers, crew, or any of the cast members say it, it is not "confirmed". They've been known to shift around episodes and change names months in advance. Officially on BattlestarWiki, casting side excerpts are *not* a reliable source nor one that we use; I mean if you've seen some of the other sides, such as those for Pegasus or Resistance, HALF of the episode is completely rewritten between side form and the final script. You dont' get the "script" from those places you linked above; it's just a rough idea and the real episode might be nothing like that. So we don't use them. Please look over our Standards and Conventions page on the subject. --[[User:The Merovingian|The Merovingian]] ([[Special:Contributions/The Merovingian|C]] - [[Special:Editcount/The Merovingian|E]]) 13:07, 2 June 2006 (CDT)
== Museum of Television and Radio Spoilers ==

Have many of you heard of the event that happened last week at the Museum of Television and Radio involving viewings of BSG? Well, apparently RDM and D Eick also showed a Teaser for Season 3 that, for the most part, showed known information and, from what I've heard, scenes that don't provide usable material. However, there is apparently one quick scene from th Teaser that Ausiello from TVGuide.com described like this: "we saw some guy introducing a baby to Starbuck saying, 'This is your mother.'" This is a big tease! I think those who follow the show intently would surmize that this ties into the Missing Ovaries storyline as well as the Leobon Conoy Interigation storyline, ie., cylons using Kara's stolen ovaries to create a baby successfully with the help of Leobon Conoy. Here's the big thing: Is this enough info to stick in the Season 3 page, Kara Thrace's page, or any other page? What of this information can we use? I know I speculate too too much. And are the minor gods of this website going to accept this slightly hearsay information enough to use? I am fearful to start adding this stuff myself - low-self-asteem :( - lest somebody remove that quickly cuz it doesn't meet conventions. However, hearsay as it might be, it does come directly from RDM & Eick ...If the info is correct... --[[User:StrayCat0|StrayCat0]] 11:38, 14 June 2006 (PST)
Caprica Boomer notes that humano-Cylons are not wired into each other's brains, so they don't share knowledge directly. However, she was aware of events in the fleet, which means some level of data from Galactica Boomer was received. She also recollects to Starbuck on the first time they met in the Delphi Museum. Could the Sharon that Starbuck knew was a real human, her consciousness cloned into a series of Cylon copies? Food for thought. [[User:Spencerian|Spencerian]] 16:52, 22 Aug 2005 (EDT)

No. Baltar's Cylon detector showed that she physically was not not a human (I forget how exactly the detector works; something like the artificial, silicon based cells of humanoid Cylons can't hold up to radiation to well and after prolonged exposure degenerate a little). They still have to explain to us the exact nature of the humanoid Cylons, but it is apparent that they aren't fully biological creatures: I think they're made of synthetic chemicals bases (silicon, etc) and they have Silica Relays running through their body; I mean they can transmit their consciousness and thoughts over vast distances just using whatever's in their brain.
Are *ANY* of the humanoid Cylons based on real people? We don't know. But the Galactica-Boomer was definately not an original. -- Ricimer, 11 Sept, 2005.

I recommend that we use "Boomer" as the name of the now-dead Galactica copy we first encounter in the mini-series in the article as applicable. The Caprica version can be "Sharon Valerii" or "Valerii" provided that the context where the copy is found is made clear in that part of the article. Remember that Galactica's crew doesn't see the Caprica copy as "Boomer" and we shouldn't call her as such. I've also broken up the text here to make reading and information easier to find. [[User:Spencerian|Spencerian]] 10:20, 7 October 2005 (EDT)

::That it is. But it is worse to use "Boomer" for all of the copies, and since it may be a cold day in hell before Adama allows any Valerii copy to fly again in the service of the Colonials, using the callsign is inappropriate as "Boomer" is dead. Hopefully we won't find any more Valeriis to disambiguate. I'm trying to treat things as we did the Ellen Tigh/Saul Tigh matter. [[User:Spencerian|Spencerian]] 12:43, 11 October 2005 (EDT)

:::I think we should probably refer to the one currently on Caprica with Caprica Six as Boomer Reloaded and the one on Galactica as Sharon.
Actually, how about creating an article for each of the two major Valerii's -- [[Sharon Valerii (Galactica copy)]] and [[Sharon Valerii (Caprica copy)]], for instance -- and using [[Sharon Valerii]] as a disambig/information page for the Valerii model line? -- [[User:Joe.Beaudoin|Joe Beaudoin]] 14:05, 6 November 2005 (EST)

*I am unsure that that would be the best option. Perhaps by the end of season 3 we might make that choice, but that's 30 episodes from now. Right now, I just think they should be under one article, though it is a valid point. --->On top of this, we keep calling them "Galactica-Boomer" and "Caprica-Boomer". Someone then pointed out that we shouldn't call "Caprica-Boomer" 'Boomer' because it's a military callsign and she was never ''really'' in the military. However, I feel that originally this was a wise choice because Helo ''thought'' she was "Boomer" as she was ''posing'' as Galactica-Boomer. Also, we need to check if anyone calls her "Boomer" anymore after she is brought to ''Galactica''. Anyway, I approve of the prevailing tendency to refer to her post-"Home" as "Caprica-Sharon"--->Regardless, we have indeed encountered a problem now that we have this information from RDM: "Caprica-Sharon" is now on ''Galactica'', and "Galactica-Sharon" is now going to wake up in a new body on or near Caprica. We '''cannot''' refer to them as "Boomer 1" and her counterpart "Boomer 2" because that would imply that "Galactica-Boomer is the "original", and she is not; RDM said there is ''no'' "original", and "Caprica-Sharon" has equal claim to this. Perhaps we could use "Boomer 1" and "Boomer A"--->no, wait, that would be only more confusing. In addition to this, there are also other 'generic' "evil" standard-Cylon Sharons, like the one introduced at the end of "Final Cut". Maybe we could use the less-often prefered nomenclature: "Tyrol-Boomer" for Chief Tyrol's Boomer (Galactica-Boomer) and "Helo-Boomer" for the one that got impregnated by Helo ("Caprica-Boomer"). Of course, there is always the possibility of some crazy soap-opera love triangle and Tyrol falling for Caprica-Boomer because he thinks Galactica-Boomer is dead only to find that Galactica-Boomer has become the new Caprica-Boomer leading to a tense standoff with the standard Caprica-Six who is taking orders from Baltar-Six the angel of God who is in turn having a love triangle with Pegasus-Six a.k.a. Gina who will be supplied with a nuclear weapon and Raptor by Galactica-Jammer which will be preceded by Cally-Selix being outed by Galactica-D'Anna when in fact she is not a Cylon throwing blame off of Galactica-D'Anna even as Caprica-D'Anna is trying to indoctrinate Galactica-Caprica-Galactica Boomer into the Cylon religion only to be saved by Anders but not before being impregnated with Starbuck's missing egg cells. This could take a while. --[[User:Ricimer|Ricimer]] 19:53, 6 November 2005 (EST)
:Wow. Wow. Wow. WOW. Ricimer. Good LORD, man. There is some part loose in your head and I like it. Wow. Anyway, I actually kind of like the idea of sing Tyrol-Sharon (or, more properly, Tyrol-Valerii?) and Helo-Sharon (Agathon-Valerii? Ouch.). That's a bit odd, perhaps, to those of us who've been watching from the start, but what if someone missed the parts where Caprica-Sharon was on Caprica and so only know of this one that, as far as they know, has always been on ''Galactica''--and why the hell don't these wiki-morons get their facts straight about Galactica-Boomer and her pregnancy and all? ;) Or maybe we should call the one of them Preggers-Boomer or Mama-Boomer or something and the other, uh... Dead-Boomer or Sleeper-Boomer. Or maybe not. --[[User:Day|Day]] 03:05, 17 December 2005 (EST)

::I don't. Galactica-Valerii and Caprica-Valerii are still unambiguous, and with "Downloaded" indefinitely shelved, it appears they will remain that way. I find identifying them by their S.O.'s tasteless and no less confusing than our current system. --[[User:Peter Farago|Peter Farago]] 03:50, 17 December 2005 (EST)
*I think we should go with Joes idea and split the article with the Galactica/Caprica convention (though I have no problem with the Helo/Tyrol one either). If at some point in the series it becomes clear that a different convention makes more sense, we could change it then. Else we could be waiting a long time with one massive, confusing Valerii article (its only going to get bigger after all).--[[User:Undc23|Undc23]] 21:43, 28 December 2005 (EST)
====The Best Laid Plans, Sometimes Best Left Buried====

Four months, three new episodes, and [[Downloaded|a lot of Spoilers]] later, I feel that the time has come to disambiguate [[Galactica-Sharon]] and [[Caprica-Sharon]] into two separate characters pages, as Joe agreed. Obviously, following the model of the Humano-Cylon page, there will be "stubs" for Galactica and Caprica-Sharon on this page, leading to full articles (other models of Sharon, like the "The Hand of God" one, Ragnar copy, "Final Cut" copy, etc. will have their entire entry here (that is, just leave their info as is). I'll use the names "Galactica-Sharon" and "Caprica-Sharon" because those are the names which were ''not'' developed by me, but which developed ''ad hoc'' on the internet to tell the two apart (notably on Televisionwithoutpity, though I can tell you that it didn't ''start'' there, but on the messageboards for the show, etc.) Nextly, we aren't using "Caprica-Boomer", etc. because "Boomer" is a military callsign and after they found out she was a Cylon she wasn't part of their unit anymore. Come to think of it, I think they've ''never'' called her Boomer since Caprica-Sharon got to Galactica. --[[User:Ricimer|Ricimer]] 01:14, 24 January 2006 (EST)

:I'm inclined to agree with the split, (with the caveat that the articles should be located at [[Sharon Valerii (Galactica Copy)]] and [[Sharon Valerii (Caprica Copy]]), along with the various Number Six identities, but I feel like I should point out one thing: None of the cylon characters have actually received more screen time than any human character. If their articles are so large and ungainly that they demand to be split, this cries out of summary and concision. We will not have this recourse with the human character articles. --[[User:Peter Farago|Peter Farago]] 01:23, 24 January 2006 (EST)

::The two Boomers have each separetly had more development than several recurring characters; Cally, Racetrack, etc. Galactica-Boomer got about as much development as Tyrol, and Caprica-Boomer got about as much development as Helo, yet the experiences of each were unique. '''And the evidence speaks for itself'''; I mean just look at the article; quite a LARGE amount of information, for each separately, and you can see that they require no summary or concision. They've just both led...shall we say, "colorful"?...lives? That's kind of what makes "Sharon" one of the more intriguing characters. --[[User:Ricimer|Ricimer]] 01:59, 24 January 2006 (EST)

:I would also note that this is bound to generate some discussion and require some thought beforehand. We shouldn't jump the gun until we have broad consensus. --[[User:Peter Farago|Peter Farago]] 01:24, 24 January 2006 (EST)

::Truth. Yet this is a special case; it was already largely agreed that they ''should'' be separated, but it was decided to wait a while longer until they were known to be truly distinct characters (at the time, we were unaware of spoilers that Galactica-Sharon would come back and we thought she was dead for good. In light of this, I see the need as more pressing than ever). Many agreed ''already'' that this was the wiser choice. I want to get the ball rolling, let others play around with the idea to get used to it. --[[User:Ricimer|Ricimer]] 01:55, 24 January 2006 (EST)

::: I don't know that I agree with a split. I don't know that I ''disagree'' either, though. I just thought I'd post that I have some reservations. I don't have the time to look too closely at it right now, so I'll try to meditate on it and post an actual decision tonight (unless I'm too tired from work or something). --[[User:Day|Day]] 12:26, 24 January 2006 (EST)

::::I'm torn on a split because of the confusion that it can create. Yet at the same time, as time goes on, ALL of the character bio pages will become too large and cumbersome. Perhaps we should apply a process similar to what we did for the Cylon (RDM) and Twelve Colonies (RDM) pages--create a parent with child subarticles.
::::*A master page on the Valerii model that summarizes the model, VERY brief links to subarticles, and notes on other models encountered (minor or in-passing encounters).
::::*A series link that gives distinct subarticles for each major Valerii encountered (All two)

::::So the [[Sharon Valerii]] page is the parent, with [[Sharon Valerii (Caprica)]] and [[Sharon Valerii (Boomer)]] as subarticles. Another example, [[Number Six]] would be the parent, with [[Natasi]], [[Number Six (Virtual)]], [[Shelly Godfrey]] and [[Gina]] as subarticles.

::::This idea actually works better with Six (who has had four separate significant characters). For Colonials, we will have to look into something like this as well or severely truncate their bios over time as the show progresses. --[[User:Spencerian|Spencerian]] 13:10, 24 January 2006 (EST)

:::::Er, that's actually what I just suggested (the first option). The second option you listed is what we already do; have subarticles about the different copies. What I want is to do what we did on the humanoid Cylon page: brief description and a link, leading off to another article about that character in detail. My key point is that not ALL of them need their own pages, i.e. copies of Number Six with a "standard" personality don't need separate pages, just keep their info on the main page. I'm not sure of Natasi-Six and ChipSix are separate characers, though they probably are. Gina definately is, as is Shelley Godrey (I'm still not sure if she was a self-aware Six, or honestly acting out fake memories).--[[User:Ricimer|Ricimer]] 14:40, 24 January 2006 (EST)

::::::As there's been the call for a consensus, I'll put my two bits in: yes! I've been keen to see this for a while. Are we going to do the same with Conoy and Doral? (I wouldn't). As for Natasi and ChipSix, I think we should just have them in the main Number Six article, as they don't have different personalities and seperate articles would confuse. Also, I agree with Farago that the articles should be titiled like [[Sharon Valerii (Galactica Copy)]] and not [[Sharon Valerii (Galactica)]].--[[User:Undc23|Undc23]] 20:43, 24 January 2006 (EST)

:::::::Some final thoughts - I would not like to see Doral and Conoy's articles sectioned off either, as there really isn't enough content to justify it. The main articles should be more than disambig pages, with notes on the model as a whole, perhaps borrowed from [[Humano-Cylon]] - which I feel probably ought to be deleted soon anyway, in favor of [[Cylon Models]], along with stubs for the articles with their own pages, and full discussions for less-notable copies (such as the overseer six models, or Ragnar Valerii). I would also like to use series boxes for Valerii and Six, and categories as well (which can also be subcategories of "Characters (RDM)"). --[[User:Peter Farago|Peter Farago]] 21:49, 24 January 2006 (EST)

::::::::Farago I think you are jumping to conclusions of brobdingnagian proportions. Our pages for Conoy and Doral are ''already'' sectioned off with subheadings. No, (dragging in the debate over humanoid Cylon nomenclature) I feel that humanoid Cylons and "Cylons" are distinct. We should do what we have done before. Have a main "Cylon" page, with a separate "Humanoid Cylon" or "Cylon Agent" or whatever page, on which there are short descriptions of the known models of the 12, and links to their pages. (EXACTLY what it already done now, simply changing the *title*). I don't know what you mean by "series boxes". If I could be permitted, I'd like to do a "test" example in the future of what I envision it as, so we can all more clearly see it. Basically, I just think that the TITLE of the existing humanoid Cylon article be changed, and that Caprica-Sharon, Galactica-Sharon, and Gina get their own articles. --[[User:Ricimer|Ricimer]] 00:28, 25 January 2006 (EST)
== Why "Apparently 'Asian' Extraction"? ==

I glanced over a number of the human character bios (Helo, both Adamas, Starbuck, Roslin, and Dualla) and all the Humano-Cylon bios, and none of them make reference to their apparent Earth racial extractions. Why mention it for Sharon, much less put it at the top of the article? No one in the show talks about race (the closest they get to it is Colony reference, and Dualla and Zarek both being Saggitarons seems to nullify racial parallels). We're not even sure there were, or will be, any verified direct connection between the Earth races of today and Colonial humans. Unfortunately, the words "apparently 'Asian' extraction" come across more as an over-fixation on her Asian characteristics than anything else.

Could we get rid of the words? Or at least, in the interest of balance, make comparable comments in all the bios ("apparently 'Caucasian' extraction," "apparently 'African' extraction," etc.)? --[[User:BlueResistance|BlueResistance]] 15:35, 9 November 2005 (EST)

:::Well. Remember that the war lasted for about 12 years (the Articles of Colonization were signed 52 years ago, which Moore [http://blog.scifi.com/battlestar/archives/2005/04/index.html#a000025 says] is coincident with the outbreak of hostilities, the war explicitly ended 40 years ago). If we guess that the age to enlist in the colonial military is 18, and Adama enlisted at the start, that would make him at most 70. If Tigh enlisted in the war's last year, that would make him at least 58.

:::Beyond that, I'm not sure what we can say with much certainty. --[[User:Peter Farago|Peter Farago]] 05:26, 28 October 2005 (EDT)

:::: It might be asserted that joinin' age is lower in the Colonies. Is it not 16 in some European nations? I could be wrong. Of course, heck, the lifespans of Colonials could be vastly different from ours. They drive space ships routinely. They have FLT drives. Surely they have some medical technologies that we don't. Maybe they just live longer. This has no basis whatsoever on anything seen on screen, but it's possible, which means that any guesses we make of age based on the actors' appearences is fairly irrelevant. Of course... 70 would be about right for retiring, wouldn't it? But if Tigh is older, why hadn't he retired already? Or was Adama getting an early retirement? In which case, is 70 an ''early'' retirement? That might speak to Colonial life expectancy. Anyway... most of that is just rambling. --[[User:Day|Day]] 14:23, 28 October 2005 (EDT)

:::::Colonial military age is up to debate as Day stated, but we don't have to guess about when Adama joined the military. Moore also said in the same commentary I already referenced that he joined as a pilot in the last days of the war, which we <i>can</i> say with certainty was approximately 40 years ago. Tigh was also specifically said to have been slightly older than, and had seen more combat than Adama. Adding all of this together, we still come to the conclusion that both of them are most likely in their 60s. 10 years is a pretty safe margin of error. --[[User:Palpatine|Palpatine]] 02:09, 29 October 2005 (EDT)

::::::I'll have to double check that. It seems odd for Saul to refer to Bill as "the old man" if he's not at least a few years younger. Another interesting question - in our military, there's usually a provision for forced retirement if you get passed over for promotion for enough years. Does anyone know more about that? --[[User:Peter Farago|Peter Farago]] 14:41, 29 October 2005 (EDT)

My main problem with age (per recent edits) is the lack of consistency between bios. We may be able to get Tigh's down to within a few years, but it's still awfully sloppy, and other pages aren't much better. My edits were based on this thread (now that Peter located it for me). But let consensus rule...calculating ages aren't my specialty. --[[User:Spencerian|Spencerian]] 00:27, 20 January 2006 (EST)
==Rating==
According to a deleted scene on the season 2 dvds, Tigh was a petty officer, an assistant gunner's mate, and still a teenager when his ship got boarded. This took place very early in the war and Tigh was still a teenager (more like Cally in age than Tyrol). Also, in the last week of the war, Adama was serving on the Galactica when it was boarded and the Cylons used the same tactics as in Valley of Darkness. Adama told Tigh what happened over a drink and this is how Tigh knew what was happening. In the boarding he was in, he was assigned to guard the ship's magazines. I'll add stuff to the main page later, just wanted to get y'alls opinion on this. It's late.--[[User:Talos|Talos]] 00:53, 27 December 2005 (EST)

:Ricimer and I had an extended conversation about this on [[Talk:Cylon War]] which you may wish to refer to. --[[User:Peter Farago|Peter Farago]] 01:22, 27 December 2005 (EST)
::Thanks, I had missed that. It was just something I noticed while watching my new dvds yesterday. --[[User:Talos|Talos]] 11:38, 27 December 2005 (EST)
== Picture? ==

I'm all for changing the pictures in the template to the promotional thing if the one we had was only so-so, but I really liked Tigh's picture, so... Why go and change them systematically? Anyone else find this somewhat rash? --[[User:Day|Day]] 22:27, 28 December 2005 (EST)

:I changed the character bio photo for consistency with many of the character bios elsewhere that started to use their promo pics. This was completely arbitrary, so if the collective says to use another picture, please do so. I think I was also trying to save it from the Island of Misfit Images, I think. --[[User:Spencerian|Spencerian]] 21:01, 23 January 2006 (EST)

::One of them will be a misfit either way (unless we find a place for the other). But I appreciate people looking at and adopting images though... --[[User:Steelviper|Steelviper]] 22:19, 23 January 2006 (EST)

::: I think consistancy is well and good, but I think consistantly cool photos are better than consistantly "promo" photos. And if we decided to use promo stuff, we'd have to be inconsistant for the more minor characters. --[[User:Day|Day]] 12:17, 24 January 2006 (EST)

::::I concur. Consistantly cool is better than consistantly "promo". Although, in the name of consistancy I wonder if it might be a good idea to establish guidelines on the type of shots we're looking for (on the character project maybe?). Personally, I look for a good 8x10 head and shoulders shot that's at least two hundred pixels wide, that doesn't have any other characters significantly in the shot (to avoid confusion). While a promo standard could be established ("use the promo shot if you've got it"), I think the show is capable of producing shots that are more representative of "the character", and cooler. Also, a character shot that illustrates/represents something in the bio or description might have more value than "actor posing for a promo shot". The promo shots can look a look a lot more polished sometimes, but with the advent of the DVD release and some of the high-resolution captures that are taken today, I think they may be obsolete. --[[User:Steelviper|Steelviper]] 12:53, 24 January 2006 (EST)

== Images ==

I feel like we may be going a bit over-board on the number of pics on this page. I've a high-speed connection, but I don't want to alienate dial-up users and I don't want to angery any lawyers by skirting too close to "fair use". If I had to get rid of one, I'd say delete the (very dark) pic near the top with the "If the crew doesn't hate the XO..." quote. It's not a very quality shot.

Secondarily, I feel like the shot of Boomer and Tigh under "Tigh in Command" is huge. It also appears on the [[Scattered]] page, I think it should be replaced with the much-less-tall [[:image:Scattered-Tigh.jpg]]. Now, I may be a bit biased towards that one because I uploaded it, but I also think it displays wonderfully Tigh's overwhelmed feeling upon taking command. What do others think? --[[User:Day|Day]] 16:02, 20 January 2006 (EST)

*I think someone needs to get a screencap in [[Scar]] when Tigh has a really stupid grin on his face while Lt. Thrace walks up to Kat near the end. I might do it when I have a chance, but I don't feel like it right now.--[[User:Deadlygopher|Deadlygopher]] 02:25, 4 February 2006 (EST)

== Overview ==

: ''Admiral [[William Adama]] questions whether or not [[Sharon Valerii]]'s pregnancy should be aborted. Meanwhile Roslin's health declines rapidly as a pro-Cylon peace group attempts to sow civil disobedience within the Fleet.''

== Summary ==

* President [[Laura Roslin]] is brought on board ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]''. She is near death and has, at best, days to live.
* Captain [[Kara Thrace]] and Lieutenant [[Louanne Katraine]] are conducting Viper tests. During a test of the Viper's projectile systems, Kat's port gun is destroyed and a piece of it impacts on Thrace's cockpit. Thrace requests priority landing; both Vipers land.
* [[Cally]] and CPO [[Galen Tyrol|Tyrol]] discover that several rounds of ammunition from the damaged Viper are unusually light and fragile. A round of such ammunition would easily break as the cartridge loaded into the chamber and misfire, leaving the projectile lodged in the barrel. When the next round hit it, the overpressure destroyed the gun. Undoubtedly, someone is trying to sabotage the fleet's military readiness.
*The sabotage investigation quickly leads Lee Adama and Kara Thrace to Asha Janik, one of the recent civilian hirees in ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]'''s armory. When they apprehend her, she declares her allegiance to a self-proclaimed pacifist organization that wants peace with the Cylons.
*Vice President Baltar is given the presidential tour by [[Billy Keikeya]] in preparation for his assumption of the Presidency. Billy gives Baltar a letter from Roslin to be opened after her death.
* The new peace movement, led by Royan Jahee, is gaining momentum in the civilian population as people begin to realize that victory against the Cylons is impossible as well as questioning the current military tactic of 'attack-and-retreat'.
* [[Sharon Valerii|Sharon's]] baby's blood was used to destroy the cancerous masses in Roslin's system. The procedure to abort Sharon's fetus was not performed.

===On Caprica Prior to the Cylon Attack===
*Roslin finds out she has cancer
*Roslin meets with President Adar to discuss a teacher's strike, and his response.
*Roslin meets with the leader of the educational alliance, [[Naylin Stans]], and strikes an agreement.
*Adar disagrees with Roslin's methods and results, and asks for her resignation.
*Roslin then leaves for ''Galactica'''s decommisioning ceremony, telling Adar that "If you want my resignation when I get back, be prepared to fight for it."

== Questions ==

*Kara Thrace is flying Mk. II vipers with Galactica's pilots again. Is she still the CAG of ''Pegasus''?
**According to interviews with RDM, Starbuck is still the ''Pegasus'' CAG. There's nothing to say she couldn't just continue flying joint missions with ''Galactica'', etc.
*Now that Roslin recalls Baltar's involvment with a Cylon agent on Caprica, what will she do about it?
*Will there be any consequences for Helo's near-mutiny?
*Will Roslin's attitude toward the Cylon fetus change following her recovery?
**Ronald D. Moore's podcast implies that her urgency was only prompted by her lack of faith in Baltar's ability to handle the situation. Will she be content to let to Sharon carry to term now that her survival is no longer in question?
*Roslin's recent series of machiavellian orders (Cain's assasination in "[[Resurrection Ship, Part I]]", and the forced abortion here) appear to have been faciliated by her belief that, given her impending death, she wouldn't have to deal with the ethical ramifications. Will this alter her relationship with Admiral Adama in the long term?
*Is security really so lax that Baltar (whom Adama does not consider especially trustworthy) would be able to smuggle one of ''Galactica's'' very few nuclear warheads off-ship?
**He didn't steal it from the armory, it's the one he used to build the Cylon detector; he's got 24 hours a day unrestricted access to it.
**Raptors are capable of detecting radiological devices. Why wasn't the bomb noticed in transit? If it's possible to effectively shield a nuclear device from detection, why don't the Cylons do this to their own warheads?
**Alternately, is the nuclear device actually functional?
**According to Ron Moore's podcast, the nuke storyline will be dealt with in "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I" and "...Part II" to end the season.
*Why aren't there posters of [[Gina]] scattered all over the fleet to inform everyone of her Cylon identity, making it difficult for her to hide, let alone lead a Cylon-sympathy movement?
**Ronald Moore did admit during his podcast that this was Gina's "Clark Kent" disguise and it was very shaky the way they played it off that nobody would recognize her. Will this loose end be tied-up in some future story line when they get further into the Colonial underground storylines that the next few episodes are supposed to follow?
**On the other hand, Gina does not appear to be leaving her room on ''Cloud 9'' that much, and the humans who do see her are Cylon sympathizers anyway.
*Does Gina "remember" Number Six's memories about having a relationship with Baltar on Caprica, or even after? In "[[Pegasus (episode)|Pegasus]]", she did not seem to know him, as Baltar introduced himself to her and explained that he had a relationship with another Cylon copy of her model. Here, however, it sort of seems like she remembers having a physical relationship with him, but isn't "ready" to go back to that after her torture. Then again, her lines also be intrepretted to mean that she really never "knew" about him before she met him on ''Pegasus''. The process of Cylon memory-transfer and systematic updating isn't very well understood at this point.

== Analysis ==

* The survivor count this episode is 49,598, a net loss of six since [[Resurrection Ship, Part II]]. [[Helena Cain|Admiral Cain]] and the ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]'' marine killed by [[Gina]] account for two. Presumably the remaining were pilots or crew lost during the [[Battle of the Resurrection Ship|attack]] on the [[Resurrection Ship]].
** This seems to be extremely good fortune, as the two battlestars engaged in a major fleet action for an extended time.
* Roslin's affair with Adar was suggested by her comment in the [[miniseries]] that "he had a way about him... you just couldn't say 'no' to him."
*Naylin Stans implies that he believes the teacher's strike is a cause worth dying for. This claim is ridiculously hyperbolic.
**The fact that President Adar was willing to use the military to enforce a back-to-work order seems to indicate that the protest must've been more serious than simple wage issues.
*Roslin's medical chart showed her name and other information such as date of birth, but this information was too blurry for viewers to read.

===Serious Technical and Storyline Issues===

*Roslin's cancer cure was pure "deus ex machina." While many viewers may find Roslin's cure a necessary one as she has become a pivotal character in the show, the method of her cure leaves too many medical mistakes and is too easy of a cure.
*Cancer is not a viral disease, like AIDS or the common cold, but an invasive destruction of tissue by mutated cells, which usurp the function of healthy cells. For the cure to work the way it did would require it not only to destroy free-floating cells and metastasized tissue, but to ''repair'' any organs with healthy tissue.
*As cancer is not cureable here on Earth, for the show to invest a cure at the last minute may feel contrived by some.

Major plot elements that form a resolution in the show's past were generally introduced and left "in the air" for suspense over several episodes while both viewers and characters learned their significance. These included:
**The search for the [[Arrow of Apollo]] and the search for the [[Tomb of Athena]]
**The Experiment with Helo on Caprica (Season 1)
**Adama's survival after his shooting

The "epiphany" of Baltar's cancer cure could have been worked over at least two or three episodes while he and Cottle studied Sharon Valerii's child, which is a logical way to work a cancer cure. Baltar is a tinkerer--the miracle working viewers saw in this episode would be best left to other characters in science fiction where such "magical" inventiveness might be expected. In "Battlestar Galactica", this sudden resolution of the second major plot element in the series (we hear of Roslin's terminal cancer diagnosis when we first see Roslin in the Miniseries) that has dire ramifications for the Fleet should not be resolved with the proverbial swipe of a writer's pen in a single episode.

For more analysis on this and other scientific matters of the Re-imagined Series, see the article, [[Science in the Re-imagined Series]].

Other technical issues abound in this episode.

*A nuclear warhead was smuggled from ''Galactica'' to ''Cloud Nine''. How would such a device possibly get past the various [[Radiological Alarm|radiological sensors]] throughout the Fleet? This was a plot complication used in "[[Flesh and Bone]]" as well when a copy of [[Leoben Conoy]] claimed that a nuclear device was hidden in the Fleet. The writing element was difficult to believe in that episode, and it far less believable in this episode. Both the battlestar and the [[Raptor]] on which the freed "freedom movement" member left the ship are military vessels ''designed'' to sniff out hostile devices.
*The explosion of the bomb on the refinery ship is powerful enough to create a sizable hole on the ship. While space is a vacuum and so shock waves do not carry as they would in an atmosphere, the Raptor that flew close to the ship and was not very far from the explosion should probably be damaged from flying debris.

== Notes ==

* This episode begins 189 days after the Cylon attack on the colonies. There is a 48 hour gap between Roslin's deathbed treatment and her conversation with Jahee. The number of 189 days given in this episode, and "six months" given in the previous one, are inconsistent with the [[Timeline (RDM)|timeline]] which ''BattlestarWiki'' has developed that keeps track of dates. See ''Talk'' page on the Timeline for a full breakdown.
* [[Lee Adama]] is once again a Captain, and has been reinstated as ''Galactica'''s CAG.
* [[Gina]] has apparently become a member of the pro-Cylon resistance. The other members of the resistance are apparently unaware she is a [[Humano-Cylon]].
* Roslin was in an intimate relationship with President Adar.
*Roslin now recalls witnessing [[Gaius Baltar]]'s affair with a copy of [[Number Six]] on Caprica, prior to the attack.
* The radiation symbol used by the colonials is different from the one used in reality, but is still easily recognizable.
*Lee Adama has been reinstated as CAG, and his authority apparently extends to the Pegasus squadrons as well. This is consistent with Cole Taylor's authority over Galactica's air wing, when ''Pegasus'' was the flagship.
*Galactica has been recruiting civilians to handle "grunt work" on the hangar deck.
*Baltar was aware of the [[Demand Peace]] movement prior to this episode.
*At least three bodies can be seen being vented into space after the explosion onboard ''[[Daru Mozu]]''.
*The file photograph of [[humano-Cylon]] model [[Number Six|#6]] is of Shelly Godfrey, seen in the episode "[[Six Degrees of Separation]]".
* The nuclear device Dr. Baltar gives the resistance is the same one he was given to create his Cylon Detector in "[[Bastille Day]]".
* The ''Pegasus'' is barely featured in this episode, and none of its crew or interior locations were seen, except in the pre-episode recap.

== Noteworthy Dialogue ==

'''Secretary Roslin:''' "I'm on my way to the ''Galactica'' to represent this administration. If you want my resignation when I get back, be prepared to fight for it."

'''President Richard Adar:''' "One of the interesting things about being President, you don't have to explain yourself. To anyone."
: ''Chaos is rampant as paramedics try to save [[William Adama|Commander Adama]]'s life after he is shot, and the ''[[Galactica]]'' is separated from the fleet.''

: <i>'''Note''': This is part one of a two-part episode. See the episode, "[[Valley of Darkness]]," for the conclusion.</i>

== Summary ==

===On ''Galactica''===

*Moments after the shooting of [[William Adama|Adama]], a [[Cylon Basestar|basestar]] ambushes the Colonial fleet, prompting [[Colonel Tigh]] to execute an emergency [[FTL]] jump procedure for the fleet to rendezvous at another point. After ''[[Galactica]]'' jumps, it finds itself stranded from the rest of the fleet, in the middle of nowhere.
*After being shot by [[Sharon Valerii]], Commander Adama is rushed to the ship's infirmary. As Dr. [[Cottle]] is not onboard, a team of [[Layne Ishay|medics]] work to stabilize Adama's condition.
*Lieutenant [[Gaeta]] devises a plan to find the co-ordinates of the fleet: he networks the [[FTL]] computer to the Navigation, Damage Control, and Fire Control [[computers]] aboard ''Galactica'', so it will only take 10 minutes to compute the fleet's location. The only problem is that ''Galactica'' will have to jump back to [[Kobol]] to their last position, where the Cylons emerged, and keep both their fighters as well as the Cylon computer viruses at bay until the calculations are finished.
[[Image:201 02.jpg|thumb|Tigh brutalizes Valerii during her interrogation.]]
*[[Colonel Tigh]] visits the incarcerated Valerii, who insists she knows nothing about what's going on. She asks about Adama's condition.
*[[Lee Adama]] is given permission to leave the brig on a provisional basis by [[Colonel Tigh]] and helps lead the squadron that will attack the basestar.
*Once ''Galactica'' jumps back to Kobol, the [[Viper (RDM)|Viper]]s manage to hold off the oncoming waves of [[Cylon Raider]]s. A [[Heavy Raider]] makes it way towards ''Galactica''. It is shot down and crashes into the starboard [[flight pod]], depressuring it.
*Gaeta manages to calculate the fleet location, and ''Galactica'' jumps to meet them.
*The medics successfully stabilize [[William Adama|Adama]]'s condition, although he remains in serious condition.
*The crashed Heavy Raider seems completely destroyed as it lay on ''[[Galactica]]'s'' starboard flight deck, but multiple sets of red sensors soon light up from inside, and a group of [[Cylon Centurion]]s make their way out of the craft.

===On Caprica===

* In the [[Delphi Museum]], [[Karl Agathon|Helo]] and [[Kara Thrace]] meet after she recovers the [[Arrow of Apollo]]. Thrace attempts to shoot the Caprica copy of [[Sharon Valerii]].

* Helo stops Thrace and tells her that Valerii is pregnant. Kara refuses to accept it.
* After Kara's attempt to shoot Valerii, she escapes from the Delphi Museum's grounds in Kara's captured Cylon Raider. (Exclaims Starbuck: "Bitch took my ride.")

===On Kobol===

*On Kobol, the survivors of the Raptor crash escape into the forest to avoid the Cylons.
*With [[Socinus]] dying, Chief [[Galen Tyrol|Tyrol]], [[Cally]], and a crewmember named [[Tarn]] return to the crash site to retrieve a medkit. On their way back, the trio are ambushed by Cylons, and only Tyrol and Cally manage to escape.

== Summary from scifi.com ==

With Commander Adama fighting for his life after being shot by the Cylon infiltrator Sharon, and President Roslin languishing in the ''Galactica's'' brig after losing the power struggle with Adama, Colonel Tigh is thrust into the unfamiliar role of the sole leader in a time of crisis.

The situation worsens quickly. First, Tigh sends Lee to the brig for siding with Roslin against Commander Adama. Then an emergency jump to escape an incoming Cylon force goes wrong, leaving Galactica alone in space, separated from the rest of the fleet — and from the medical help needed to save Adama's life.

As Tigh struggles to come to terms with this crisis, he thinks back on his relationship with Adama, who saved him from oblivion and from his own fierce temper, and tries to tap into some of the wisdom that his old friend offered him.

It soon becomes clear that to reconnect with the fleet, ''Galactica'' must jump back into danger over Kobol and network its computers, a highly risky move that will make the ship vulnerable to attack from both the Cylon fighters and their crippling computer viruses.

Meanwhile, on the surface of Kobol, Chief Tyrol and the rest of the downed Raptor crew fight for their lives against an unseen enemy while Vice President Baltar seeks solace in his visions of Number Six, only to find those visions turn dark and haunting.

Light-years away, on Cylon-occupied Caprica, Kara and Helo must find some way to bring the Arrow of Apollo back to the fleet — but first they have to get it back from the avatar of Number Six who has found it in the Delphi Museum.<br><br>
== Questions ==

* Does Tigh recall that [[Gaius Baltar]] first tested his [[Cylon detector]] on Valerii? Or did he know in the first place? ([[Resistance|Answer]])
* Regarding the firewall status display: What is not to say that the Cylons programmed the display, or more accurately the GUI interface for it, to show a false reading on their intrusion progress?
**If you look really hard, the instant that Gaeta leans away from the status display to the floor to yank out the cable networking the computers (while he's not looking), the display does show that the last firewall was breached for a split second (probably why the Cylons weren't able to infiltrate a few but not all of Galactica's computers).
* Interesting connundrum: If [[Kelly]] is the ''Galactica'''s third-in-command, then why haven't we seen (or heard) more from him in the past? It seems to be more or less contrived.
** '''Note:''' Captain Kelly is the [[Landing Signal Officer]] on ''Galactica''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s flight deck (which was mentioned in the [[mini-series]]).
** He was first seen in the mini-series when Adama first appeared in the mini-series. Adama was going over his decommissioning speech and Kelly thanked Adama for the opportunity to serve with him. Kelly reappears in his LSO duties in the episode "[[Final Cut]]."
** He was third in command at the time of this episode. In the Mini-Series, Kelly gives Tyrol an order to aid the stricken port flight pod rescue after Tigh hesitates to give an order (himself following Adama's command to tend to the matter). Ordering is something only a third-in-command would have the guts or authorization to do in front of a second-in-command. Tigh did countermand him moments later to order the venting of the pod. This strongly suggests that Kelly has always been third in command.
* Just how many aboard the ''Galactica'' agree with Adama's decision to jail Roslin?
* What is the significance of the number "3"? It is prominently shown on a door that a younger William Adama enters (in Colonel Tigh's flashbacks); when Lieutenant Gaeta arranges 3 bars of soap beside each other after washing his hands in the bathroom, and is also shown during the sequence with the firewall (that Lieutenant Gaeta devises to slow down the infiltration of the Galactica's network by Cylon forces), that has 4 levels of encryption, with 3 sub-encryption codes for each barrier.
*How much time has passed between the point when the Galactica finally jumps back to rendezvous with the rest of the fleet, and when the Cylons make their way out of the crashed troop carrier? And for that matter, why hasn't anyone gone to clean up the wreckage from the flight deck?
** Considering that Colonel Tigh is still sitting at Commander Adama's bedside as [[Valley of Darkness]] opens, and that the Vipers deployed in this episode have just arrived in the flight deck, and the pilots are getting out of their aircraft, it is plausible to assume that [[Valley of Darkness]] takes place either directly after the events of this episode, or at the most, a couple of hours.
** RDM stated in audio commentary (podcast) for this episode that this landing pod - originally set up as a museum - is not in active use.

== Analysis ==
*Computers simply being networked is not a sufficient condition to allow foreign interference - why would any of the systems [[Gaeta]] linked be connected to [[wireless]] channels? Was the infiltration that he detected most likely originating from within ''[[Galactica]]''?

:No and yes. As with any other Colonial ship, ''Galactica'' receives data all the time from exterior sources. In addition to its mainframe computer, ''Galactica'' primary computers include the FTL, Navigation, Damage Control, and Fire Control systems. The mainframe ostensibly handles wireless communications (Note Caprica-Valerii's request for access to the mainframe with its communications channels in "[[Flight of the Phoenix]]"). The mainframe probably ''did'' come under attack by the Cylon virus but was able to avoid infection because a Colonial mainframe may have been what the Colonials believed would be the central lynchpin in stopping any Cylon computer cracking.

:While the Colonial Fleet was lax in their computer defenses since the [[Cylon War]], they probably believed that a networked computer system would be acceptable provided that their battlestar's mainframe computer or a robust avionics package and programming would be able to block or stop any electronic incursion. That fact might have been true--where it not for the [[Command Navigation Program]], which gave the Cylons a backdoor to any Colonial flight computer system. Instead of ramming the main door (mainframe) down, the Cylons used the "window", entering through a lesser computer (or opening a hole in their network) to achieve the same effect. The CNP helped to bypass the defenses of the mainframe, where normal communications were probably screened and electronic attacks thwarted, to enter through another system.

:''Galactica's'' computers may have never been networked in her history before this episode. Her computers may also not be as robust as her sister battlestars. But her computers were designed to be networked or run separately since Gaeta was able to set up a network at all. It was very likely that the mainframe was part of Gaeta's ad hoc network since the other computers would not be able to gather any data from the mainframe's wireless communications. Once the connections were made, the other computers (all of which probably had less resistance or defenses to Cylon viruses) were likely more subseptible to infection than the mainframe as these computers could now "hear" the same things that the mainframe heard normally in its business (such as Cylon electronic attack sequences), but was far more able to thwart. the lesser computers became infected quickly. After a time, even the mainframe in whole or in part would be infected since the Cylon virus is remarkably adaptable and polymorphic, even turning later into a [[Logic bomb]] after learning and probing ''Galactica's'' hardware.

== Notes ==

*The second season introduced the practice of showing the current fleet population in the opening credits. Throughout this episode, that population is 47,875. That represents 12 total casualties since "Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II".
* [[Socinus]]'s lungs are filling with fluid.
* Captain Kelly is now the third in the chain of command, after Tigh.
** '''Note:''' It is possible that Kelly is only third in command because of the malefactions of Apollo, and that, typically as fourth it is not a surprise that we have not seen him before. The sudden incapcity of two superiors has bumped him up the ladder. It is also worth noting that Doc Cottle holds the rank of Major, as stated in "[[Bastille Day]]", which would make him third in command, were it not for his absence from Galactica when Adama was shot.
** '''Note:''' Another possibilty is that Dr. (Major) Cottle might not even be in "Galactica's Line of Sucession" at all (he is a medical officer, not a combat officer); in the United States military there are times when a lower ranking person will be in "Operational Command" of people who are technically higher in rank. For example, the United States Navy makes a distinction between Line Officers and Staff Officers. Line officers are those officers in general military specialties, and are eligible to command ships and other units. Staff Officers, howeveer, are only permitted to command units within their specialty. Aboard ships, the senior Line Officer is in command, no matter the rank of any embarked Staff Officer.
* Adama and Tigh served on a merchant freighter together after leaving the military; Adama was responsible for bringing Tigh back into the military when he reentered.
* This episode marks the first (known) attempt at networking ''Galactica'''s computer systems, at least under William Adama's command.
* Tigh's distrust of Baltar seems evident in this episode, particularly in the reply he made to [[Gaeta]] regarding the trust he had in the Lieutenant's programming abilities over Baltar's.
* Tigh's wife has taken residence in Tigh's quarters.
* Starbuck seems to incorrectly assume that there is a "real" Sharon and that the Sharon on Caprica is just a copy of her.
* This episode introduces the first combat depiction of the Cylon [[Heavy Raider]], previously seen during [[Colonial Day]].
* This episode showed the first change in the intro sequence, including subtitles, a lack of the "episode clip" sequence, and the use of the theme music previously used only in the UK showings of the first season.

== Bloopers ==

* During the scene on Caprica, Helo exclaims "for God Sakes" instead of the more Colonial "for Gods' Sakes" or Cylon "for God's Sake".

== Noteworthy Dialogue ==

* ''In the Galactica's sickbay:''
*:<b>Colonel Tigh:</b> (to Commander Adama) You never should have brought me back into the service. If you had just let me be, I'd have died back there on Caprica along with everyone else, and been happier for it. I don't want a command. I never did. Don't you dare die on me now.

* ''During a flashback sequence:''
*:<b>Saul Tigh:</b> So, how'd you do it? How'd you get off this frakking freighter?
*:<b>William Adama:</b> Connections. Anne's father has a friend in the Defensive Committee.
*:<b>Saul Tigh:</b> So the new wife comes through for you. I wish I had in-laws with pull.
*:<b>William Adama:</b> Give me a couple years, and I'll have some pull. You watch me. I'll have my own Battlestar someday.

* ''In the Galactica's brig:''
*:<b>President Laura Roslin:</b> (to Tigh) Colonel, once we find the fleet, I'd like to have a word with you.
*:<b>Colonel Tigh:</b> There's nothing to talk about. You went up against the old man and you lost.

* ''Tigh's pep talk to the CIC crew:''
*: '''Tigh''': This is his command. His orders are still the word of the Gods on board this ship. Just so we're clear. This will be Adama's command until the day he dies. And we are not going to let him die. So say we all.

* ''On Caprica Sharon being "right":''
*: '''Starbuck''': She's right, huh? Sharon the Cylon is right. Let's all just listen to Sharon the Cylon. Do whatever she says. Because that's a good idea.
*: '''Helo''': Hey, Kara, she helped me get this far.
*: '''Starbuck''': OK. I get it. I get it, Helo. You and I go way back, so I get it. All right? I remember how you felt about her, but she is not the real Sharon. That is some cheap, knock-off copy.

* ''After Starbuck shoots at Caprica Sharon:''
*: '''Helo''': I'm not going to let you kill her. She's carrying my child.
*: '''Starbuck''': My Gods, men are so painfully stupid sometimes! How do you know that?
*: '''Helo''': I know, all right? She's not lying.
*: '''Starbuck''': They lie about ''everything'', Helo. Their entire existence is a ''lie''. They're not human, Helo, they're machines. You can't have a baby with a ''machine''.
*: '''Helo''': I don't know what to tell you, OK? But I believe her. It's hard to describe, we've been together for a long time. I mean, I know what she is, but she's not like the others! Look at me, she is not.

* ''Lee gives his word to Tigh regarding his parole:''
*: '''Lee''': All right, you have my parole. When I'm on duty, I will make no attempt to free her or sow insurrection among the crew. When I'm not on duty, I'll report back to this cell.
*: '''Tigh''': (matter-of-factly) Pre-flight brief is underway in the ready room.
*: '''Lee''': Right.

* ''Starbuck, upon the realization that Caprica Boomer has just stolen her Cylon Raider:''
*: '''Starbuck''': Bitch took my ride...

* ''Regarding the bar room scenes (i.e. how [[Saul Tigh]] and [[William Adama]] met) that were filmed, but weren't fully utilized:''
*: "We were going to open this show, with just that scene, to show how the two men met. And then come into this scene we're watching now, where Tigh takes command of ''Galactica'', and Adama's been shot, and there's all this chaos. And the episode was going to continue to sort of flashback onto their relationship. On the early days of Tigh and Adama. [...] And we shot those sequences. And edited it together, and we looked at them, but ultimately we didn't like them. We just didn't feel -- they weren't quite the show. [...] You can't really put your finger on any particular person, except maybe me, because it is my concept. [...] I don't know if I created, or had the writers of this episode, [[Bradley Thompson]] and [[David Weddle]], I don't know if I really gave them a rich enough environment to tell that backstory. "
* ''On splitting the original "Scattered" into "Scattered" and "[[Valley of Darkness]]".''
*: "We've always struggled with the length of our scripts, the length of our episodes. If you look at it, there's only 40 minutes in change of actual program content. And our scripts tend to run, in the early drafts, in the 50s or low 50s. [...] 60 page scripts are not unheard of. An ideal page script for us, going into shooting, is usually around 46-47 pages. Sometimes we make that, sometimes we don't. [...] And I think we did on 'Scattered', I think in the final draft it was around 47-48 pages. The shows are still too huge. They're still too long. The style of storytelling -- I might have talked about this before -- just requires spending more time on character, creating momenets, really, sort of, taking your time as you go through the show. [...] So we essentially divided it into two and created another action storyline for part two."
::I think we should leave it blank until we know. What if a director really wants his name removed from an episode at some point? --[[User:Peter Farago|Peter Farago]] 10:16, 17 November 2005 (EST)

:::Reminds me of this Eric Idle movie "Burn Hollywood Burn"; basically, he's the director of what's going to be the biggest movie of the decade...and also the biggest flop. It's got a gigantic special effects budget (like 3 disaster movies and 3 action movies roled into one). It's called "Trio" and it stars the action 'trio' of Slyvester Stallone, Jackie Chan, and Whoopi Goldberg (I kid you not, they actually appear in this thing; yeah, a gun-toting Whoopi Goldberg). Well, the idea behind "Allen Smithee" is it's an unusual made up name no one would really have, so that when a hollywood studio so butchers a director's project that it is A) not his creative vision at all and he was completely cut off from it and B) it would be career suicide to be associated with such a flop. Eric Idle's character the director of Trio who really has no control over it whatsover as the studio writers and execs are calling the shots (they put him in charge of camerawork and little else), so when he finally sees the finished rough cut he declares "It's worse than Showgirls!" and demands for it to be an "Allen Smithee production". Problem is, through blind luck Eric Idle's character's ''real'' name is "Allen Smithee"! And according to the director's guild rules the only name you can replace as director for the film is "Allen Smithee". So he goes berserk and steals the rough cuts of the film and hides them so the film can never be shown (it was a movie-in-a-movie thing about everyone trying to get the movie back). Dear god, the descriptions of "Trio" were like sitting in on a Berman and Braga writing session; Whoopi and Jackie's characters die in the end, while Stallone's character gets a sex change. However, Jackie Chan was so adamant that in his movies his character ''never'' dies that eventually they compromised by saying that his character does die, but gets ''reincarnated''. Sort of like the old "We can never have enough time travel or parallel universes on Star Trek!" routine they pulled on us.--[[User:Ricimer|Ricimer]] 12:17, 17 November 2005 (EST)
:Welcome to the Wiki. I'm sorry, but we have known this for months. Please check around --23:32, 6 January 2006 (EST)
::Actually, looking at this [[Talk:Pegasus_(episode)|talk page]], the suggestion was merely speculation; this episode confirmed it. It's a valid question from someone that doesn't want to be spoiled. --[[User:Sgtpayne|Sgtpayne]] 02:07, 7 January 2006 (EST)

Just how many "[[Resurrection Ship|Resurrection Ships]]" are out there? This ship looked pretty big, and it would have to be to store multiple copies of the [[Humano-Cylon|Humano-Cylons]] we've seen thus far. And, how does this fit into the "Rule of 12" that was mentioned in the [[Miniseries]]? --[[User:Sgtpayne|Sgtpayne]] 02:41, 7 January 2006 (EST)
:There is apparently only the one. They don't seem to have anticipated following Galactica (and Pegasus) so far away from the Twelve Colonies and the Cylon homeworld, so they built a transmitter ship to boost the signal and allow Cylons to download into it. Yes, I would assume it stores several hundred copies of each Cylon: please read the article "[[Humano-Cylon]]", in which, after months of debate, it was conclusively proven after an interview with Ron D. Moore that there are indeed "12 ''Models''" of Cylon (as per the 'rule' introduced in the Miniseries), but there can be several hundred (if not several thousand) copies of each model in existence. --[[User:Ricimer|Ricimer]] 02:57, 7 January 2006 (EST)
"Analysis" is for making detailed, '''point by point''' observations, criticisms, speculations etc. It is not a "Review", which is more what you wrote seems like. --[[User:Ricimer|Ricimer]] 00:13, 7 January 2006 (EST)

:I considered your viewpoint after huffing about this emotionally at first, then having a beer. Then I reverted your edit, Ricimer. For one, such analyses are prevalent throughout the episode pages. I made a similar analysis on "Final Cut" if memory serves and yet this did sit well with others. Analyses like this cannot HELP but take on a singular viewpoint at first. But, as others edit it, it will take on the consensus viewpoint. An analysis like this also gets the conversation started. If you see something noted that did not happen, by all means do remove or modify it and perhaps add your take on it too. "Battlestar Galactica" is fiction, not fact--an analysis here ''is '' by function, a review. Allow others to add, modify, or delete their 2 cents to my 2 cents on the episode before making such a dramatic edit (which, if you reread, does not contain any speculation but a take on what was seen). --[[User:Spencerian|Spencerian]] 00:35, 7 January 2006 (EST)
Wow. Did anyone else find Kara and Cain's relationship kind of spooky? I'd like to make mention of their connection on the page but I'm not sure how to word it... --[[User:Redwall|Redwall]] 00:24, 7 January 2006 (EST)

:Yes. Remember that Kara has issues of violence of her own. It's what makes her a strong pilot, but she is mentally, a barely caged psyche. At the same time, she may have been going along with Cain, realizing she's a nut. --[[User:Spencerian|Spencerian]] 00:35, 7 January 2006 (EST)

::Disagree. That chick was gettin' sucked in like nobody's business. (If she wasn't why would/will she speak so kindly of Cain at her coming funeral?) --[[User:Watcher|Watcher]] 00:44, 7 January 2006 (EST)

:::I don't think it's so much "spooky" from what I've seeen; simply, Starbuck is drunk on the idea of going back to Caprica; Cain read the logs, she knew about this ALREADY, Cain knew what strings to pull to win Starbuck over to her side. Battlefield promotion and a ''token'' compromise (returning Apollo to flight status) didn't hurt either (like Cain would ground ANY able-bodied pilots, much less Apollo whose one of their best, before quite possibly the biggest attack EVER made against the Cylons). --[[User:Ricimer|Ricimer]] 00:48, 7 January 2006 (EST)

::::Yep. That does sound like Cain. At first I didn't want to give her credit for those kind of tactical chops because of her (in the end) self-destructive tendencies (much like Starbuck BTW), but... who am I kiddin'? She's a pitbull. --[[User:Watcher|Watcher]] 00:57, 7 January 2006 (EST)
Apparently Galactica has a small contingent of bored, fugitive employees of Revell on board... 'cuz they sure as heck had shiny new models of both the Blackbird and the R.S. on hand in short order. And just in time for that military strategy session. --[[User:Watcher|Watcher]] 02:17, 7 January 2006 (EST)

:Yeah, I've always wondered how they managed to get those little models completed and what they are made out of. Its cool to see small replica models used in the planning. -- [[User:Blacklight|Blacklight]]

From the episodes "[[Act of Contrition]]" through "[[Resurrection Ship]]", ''Galactica's'' combat ability was severely limited by her manpower - more so than her shortage of mechanical resources. This list was created to keep track of ''Galactica's'' current and former Viper pilots, Raptor pilots, and ECOs, and now includes members of the crew of ''Pegasus'' as well.
====Vipers====
* Lt. JG [[Constanza|Brendan "Hot Dog" Constanza]]
* Lt. JG. [[Louanne Katraine|Louanne "Kat" Katraine]]
* 12 others (at most). 8 according to scifi.com, incl. 3 other nuggets.

Others: As of the [[Mini-Series]], Starbuck informs Cmdr. [[William Adama]] that "there are 20 of us climbing the walls down in the Ready Room". This is excluding the 20 members of Ripper's wing already sortied, and Apollo, on escort detail, and probably doesn't include ECOs.

In the [[mini-series]], three Mark VII Vipers are seen in formation inside the ragtag fleet before they hooked up with ''Galactica''. These could have been left behind with the non-FTL capable ships, or could have been carried to Ragnar in other ships as Apollo was.

After the accident in [[Act of Contrition]], Capt. Adama states to Lt. Thrace that there are 21 pilots remaining, by which he probably refers only to the Viper pilots. (If this number includes Raptor pilots and ECOs as well, then it is contradicted by the survival of 2 Raptor ECO's by the time of [[Fragged]], two episodes after an 18-Viper strong sortie in [[Scattered]], at a time when there would have been at most 19 total survivors.) It is difficult to imagine that Sergeant [[Hadrian]] made the same distinction when she referred to the thirteen killed and seven injured in the incident, since the most notable victim was actually a Raptor, not a Viper pilot.

Of the 11 present for funeral services, at least one (Crashdown) and possibly two (unidentified #4?) are known to be ECOs. Racetrack and the fourth ECO are clearly not present. Another one (Boomer) and possibly two (unidentified #5 or #7?) are known to be Raptor pilots. This leaves 7, at most 9 Viper pilots depicted in this scene. Adding the 7 injured pilots, we have a total of 14-16 accounted for, meaning 5-7 surviving and uninjured pilots must not have been present for some reason (perhaps performing a [[Combat Air Patrol]]). 8 nuggets were then recruited to fill out the ranks, including [[Kat]], [[Hot Dog]] and [[Chuckles]], bringing the total to 29.
{| align="center"
| [[Image:Nuggetextra1.jpg|75px]] || [[Image:Nuggetextra2.jpg|75px]] || [[Image:Nuggetextra3.jpg|75px]] ||[[Image:Nuggetextra4.jpg|75px]] || [[Image:Nuggetextra5.jpg|35px]]
|-
| align="center" colspan="5" | Unidentified nuggets from [[Act of Contrition]]. #3 ([[Stepchild]]) and one other were killed in [[The Hand of God]].
|}
In [[The Hand of God]], a total of 19 Vipers and 2 Raptors are deployed. Starbuck is inactive at this time due to her knee injury. [[Fireball]], [[Chuckles]], [[Stepchild]] and one unidentified pilot are killed in this operation, leaving the total at 25. According to scifi.com, three nuggets are killed and four vipers detroyed in this operation, so we must assume that [[Stepchild]] and the unidentified death were among their number.

In [[Scattered]], Galactica fields 18 Vipers, which is a feaseable number. If no other pilots than [[Flyboy]] were killed in [[Valley of Darkness]], with [[Joe Palladino]] in the brig, and with [[Louanne Katraine]] on medical leave, this means ''Galactica'' had at most 22 pilots available for duty by the time of [[Flight of the Phoenix]].

However, in that episode, 42 Vipers are sortied (not only nearly twice as many pilots as ''Galactica'' has, but more planes than she even has on hand!) It's probably safest to consider this an effects gaffe and be done with it, but if it was intended literally then apparently ''Galactica'' has been recruiting more nuggets since Act of Contrition - despite both Apollo's assertion in that episode that the eight candidates were the best-qualified in the fleet, and Kat's in "Final Cut" that there were no replacements coming.

Kat was reinstated to flight status by the time of "[[Pegasus (episode)|Pegasus]]". After encountering fellow battlestar ''[[Pegasus]]'', ''Galactica'' received a number of transfers to fill her depleted ranks. However, it is not probable that any ''Pegasus'' crewmen were deployed against that ship's own Vipers at the climax of the episode. Only 15 of ''Galactica's'' Mk. II Vipers can be clearly seen as the episode ends. Plus Kat, and minus Apollo and Starbuck (transferred to ''Pegasus''), ''Galactica'' can muster no more than 21 Vipers against ''Pegasus''.

====Raptors====
* Lieutenant Emmit, pilot for [[George Birch|Birch]] during refuelling operation in [[Home, Part I]] [[Image:Fraggedextra1.jpg|75px]]
* One other (at least, see Note)

Others: Galactica is able to field six raptors simultaneously in [[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II]]. The crews of [[Raptor 1]] and [[Raptor 3]] are accounted for. [[Boomer]] then pilots a raptor to the [[Cylon Basestar]] in orbit of [[Kobol]], while three Raptors are sent to board [[Colonial One]]. These three probably did not need ECOs, given the target's lack of defensive options, but they certainly required pilots.

Note: [[Apollo]] is qualified to pilot a Raptor ([[Resistance]], [[Pegasus (episode)|Pegasus]]), and may have piloted one of the boarding party in [[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II]]. This would (awkwardly) mean that he flew himself back to ''Galactica'' while under arrest.

====ECOs====
*[[Margaret Edmonson|Margaret "Racetrack" Edmonson]]
*Unidentified ECO of Raptor 1 in [[Fragged]]. [[Image:Fraggedextra2.jpg|75px]]

Note: The survival of two specialist ECOs by the time of [[Fragged]] means Apollo's headcount of surviving pilots in [[Act of Contrition]] could not have included them.

====Others====

Present at funeral services in [[Act of Contrition]] are 11 pilots and ECOs, including Apollo, Starbuck, Boomer and Crashdown. The next ready room scene is in [[Resistance]], and features 20 people in addition to Apollo. Still present from the previous episode are:
*[[Image:Contritionextra2.jpg|30px]]
*[[Image:Contritionextra6.jpg|30px]]
*[[Image:Contritionextra3.jpg|30px]] - Several possible matches?

Note: Cmdr. [[William Adama|William "Husker" Adama]] flew a Viper Mk. II during the [[Cylon War]], and can also pilot a Raptor (as seen in [[Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down]]). Col. [[Saul Tigh]] was also a Viper pilot of the same vintage, but there is less to suggest he has retained any sort of flight status.

===Pegasus===
== Biography ==

=== Background ===

A veteran probably in his 60s, Saul Tigh is sometimes estranged from his wife and has been somewhat disillusioned with his career, seeking refuge in alcoholism - a move which has lead many in the crew to view him with contempt ([[Mini-Series]]; [[33]]).

He is a third generation Colonial soldier. [[Saul, Tigh (father of)|His father]] was a decorated fighter pilot killed in combat and [[Tigh, Saul (grandfather of)|his grandfather]] served under President [[Mueller (president)|Mueller]]. According to [[Billy Keikeya]], Tigh was a published military historian until personal problems became apparent. ([[Mini-Series]], [[List of Deleted Scenes (RDM)|deleted scene]])

According to the [[series bible]], Tigh began his career as a deckhand, where he became a chief (apparently similar to CPO [[Galen Tyrol]]) during the first [[Cylon War]]. His ship was boarded by the Cylons where he and others fought in hand to hand combat, during the bloodiest time of that war; his ship was subsequently destroyed and he survived. He was transferred to another unnamed ship, which succumbed to a similar fate as his original ship. Bearing witness to many a bloody combat, he became emotionally scarred, which had, among other impetuses, lead him to alcoholism.

His disposition was not aided by his being "dragooned" into Colonial Officer Candidate School, or his reassignment as a Viper pilot. After the cessation of hostilities, he was dismissed from service and eked out an existence as a deckhand aboard a commercial freighter. While onboard, he drowned himself in alcohol and, after a time, encountered [[Adama, William|William Adama]], who had not seen as much combat experience as Tigh himself did. The two fostered their friendship and when Adama reenlisted with the service, he pulled strings to reinlist Tigh as well. ([[Scattered]])
[[image:33-Tigh_Adama.jpg|thumb|left|250px|"If the crew doesn't hate the XO, then he's not doing his job." (C. Sci-Fi Channel)]]
Following the Cylon attack, Tigh recovered some of his old verve and attempted to give up alcohol. However, this, combined with the initial stress of flight from the Cylons caused him to over-compensate as a martinet, frequently driving the personnel overly-hard, and berating where encouragement might have proved the better option ([[33]]). He excuses this by using the truism that the XO is supposed to be the "hard face" of command.

With his drinking problem relatively under control, Tigh settled back into his role as the ''Galactica's'' Executive Officer and proved himself both honest and level-headed - if still hard on himself and others - in a number of circumstances, and he provided the kind of support [[Adama]] needed.

During Cylon attacks, he has proven himself an excellent battle manager and tactician, his quick actions sometimes saving the ship and the fleet from damage or destruction ([[Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down]]), [[Scattered]], [[Valley of Darkness]]).

He is uneasy around President [[Laura Roslin]] ([[Water]]), and resents what he sees as her interfering with Adama's command ([[Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down]]) - something born out of his deep respect for Adama which even the most heated of disagreements between them ([[You Can't Go Home Again]]) cannot disrupt.

He has a personal dislike of Kara "[[Starbuck]]" Thrace, one of the ''Galactica's'' pilots, and - while grudgingly conceding she is a fine pilot, he does not understand what Adama sees in her ([[Mini-Series]]), seeing her purely as an egotistical, insubordinate youngster. While they have tried to bury the hatchet between them ([[Mini-Series]], [[Water]]), there is potentially too much water under the bridge now for them to get completely past their differences.

Outside of Adama, Tigh has few others he can regard as confidants aboard ship; and since the initial Cylon attack, he has very much withdrawn from interacting with the crew during off-duty hours, making him perhaps more isolated than even Adama - who is at least held in awe and respect by the crew.

=== Wife's Return ===

Some three weeks after the Cylon attack on the [[Twelve Colonies]], Tigh was stunned to discover his wife, [[Ellen]], had not been killed as he had thought, but had been rescued from [[The Twelve Colonies#Picon|Picon]], and carried aboard the ''[[Rising Star]]'' as an unconscious "Jane Doe". Whether this reunion will be for his betterment or not remains to be seen.

However, despite the emotional implications from the destruction of the Colonies and life aboard the ship, Tigh is thrust further into politics as his wife plays her schemes. Much to his disdain, his wife attempts to procure photo opportunities with the likes of [[Tom Zarek]] -- a person Tigh views with the utmost disdain. ([[Colonial Day]]) Additionally, Ellen seems to have re-established Saul Tigh's alcoholism with gratuitious drinking.

Despite this, Adama sent Tigh with a squadron of marines to arrest [[Laura Roslin]] after it was discovered that she convinced [[Kara Thrace]] to jump back to [[The Twelve Colonies#Caprica|Caprica]] to retrieve a mythical artifact called the [[Arrow of Apollo]]. This action deprived the fleet of its own military resource -- the [[Cylon Raider]], which would have been used to plant a nuke aboard the base star in orbit around the planet believed to be [[Kobol]] -- and convinced Adama that Roslin was misusing her authority.

Onboard ''[[Colonial One]]'', Tigh's men and Roslin's [[Presidential Security Service|personal security agents]] were at a standoff. This was the point where [[Lee Adama]] [[mutiny|aimed a weapon at Tigh's head]], attempting to thwart the arrest. In order to defuse the sitation, Roslin agreed to be arrested and Lee Adama was arrested on charges of treason. ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II]])

=== Tigh in Command ===

Tigh was present at the [[assassination]] attempt on Adama by [[Sharon Valerii]]. As guards restrained Valerii, he attempted to stop the bleeding from the torso gunshot wounds Adama sustained in the attempt ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II]]). Needing reliable officers, Tigh granted Lee Adama a furlough from his arrest. After his daily duties as CAG are done, Lee promises to return to the brig when off-shift.

With Adama incapacitated and with Roslin dethroned, Tigh tried to maintain order, however, his irrational and gruff command style displeased many crew. Morale and ship efficiency began to suffer. Ellen Tigh became a private advisor to her husband, frequently questioning his power to command while also suggesting ways of usurping more power and quashing his opponents. Ellen Tigh's advice would worsen an already bad situation.

Tigh's interrogation of suspected Cylon collaborators or infiltrators was brutal. After beating, then nearly shooting the Galactica copy of Valerii, other issues in the fleet diverted him from further interrogation. He ordered a special cage made for her for later interrogation. Tigh also savagely interrogated Valerii's former lover, Chief [[Tyrol]] as a possible [[Humano-Cylon]] himself. Tigh would have left him with Valerii in the new cage if [[Gaius Baltar]] did not intervene to prove medically that Tyrol was not a Cylon himself.

With Roslin in prison, uprisings began with ships that refused to give ''Galactica'' supplies until Roslin was released. Worse, the [[Quorum of Twelve]] demanded to see Roslin. Knowing of Roslin's hallucinations in the brig, he intentionally invites the Quorum to see Roslin in her poor state. However, Roslin recovered sufficiently from her [[Chamalla]] withdrawal after getting a supply smuggled to her by Corporal [[Venner]], her guard. Unlike many Gemenon colonists, Tigh is very secular and believes that the accounts within the [[Sacred Scrolls]] weren't to be believed, and teased Roslin in front of the Quorum on her visions. Roslin not only was able to speak to the Quorum, but decisively reinforced her decisions as well as her role in the search for the location of Earth as told in the Pythian prophesies. This act greatly impressed the dominantly religiously-oriented Quorum, and greatly angered Tigh, who feared a larger civilan government uprising led by the Quorum. Tigh instituted [[Wikipedia:martial law|martial law]] throughout the fleet in an attempt to maintain order in a rapidly chaotic shuffle of power between the civilian and military governments ([[Fragged]]).

The supply situation led Tigh to a poor decision of using Viper pilots to retrieve the supplies. On one ship, an incident led to four deaths and many injuries due to the pilot's inexperience in managing such a situation. Unlike Adama might have done when realizing he made a bad decision, Tigh blamed the pilot and not himself for the incident.

=== Fleet Factioning and Adama's Return ===

The shootings, Tigh's decision for martial law, and his unwillingness to discuss anything with anyone except Ellen Tigh (and the unconscious Adama) became the dividing point of those wanting to press on to finding Earth, and those wanting to settle on Kobol. ([[Season 2 (2005-06)|Season 2]]) Tigh's drinking became more out of control, and led to very irrational and edgy behavior that left many very concerned of his command ability, particularly the [[CIC]] staff. The situation came to a head when Roslin, tacitly aided by other officers and crew on ''Galactica'', escaped the brig and hid amongst the many ships in the fleet with the aid of [[Tom Zarek]]. Tigh chased down the escaping Raptor using the [[CAP]] patrol, having the Viper fire across the bow of the Raptor to warn it to return. Luckily, Tigh did not worsen the issue and let the Raptor escape, rather than shooting it down, which would have killed Adama's son, the President, and could have placed himself in a grave situation.

Fortunately, Commander Adama regained consciousness soon after the escape and inquired with his friend what had transpired. Despite the serious problems that Tigh created, Adama did not blame his friend and XO, indicating that they would repair the situation together ([[Resistance]]).

Both Adama (also a rather secular man) and Tigh were astounded at the number of ships that seceded from the main fleet to join the [[Laura Roslin faction|faction]] that sought the [[Tomb of Athena]] with President Roslin ([[The Farm]]). Tigh backed up Adama while he maintained a similar official position on Roslin and the separated ships as Tigh had. However, after Adama realized that survival of the entire fleet would only come if everyone held together, Adama began to prepare a journey to Kobol to retrieve the remainder of the fleet and reach out to Roslin ([[Home, Part I]]). At first Tigh seemed to believe that Adama was going to do this in a more military light, and scoffed at Roslin's religious views on the quest until he realized that Adama had begun to follow Roslin's information, taking her reports and visions seriously. Tigh was left in command while Adama successfully reunited the fleet and reconciled with Roslin ([[Home, Part II]]).

==Notes==
* Tigh's first name has been given as "Paul" on a number of websites. This may be based on an early [http://www.twiztv.com/scripts/battlestar/season1/galactica-ms1.pdf version of the script] '''(PDF file)''', which has Adama speaking to "Paul" in their discussion of his fight with Starbuck. Since this version of the script has significant differences to the final script, its canonical value is low.
* [[Ronald D. Moore]] has indicated via the [[podcast]] commentary on the episode "[[Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down]]" that the character's name initially was Paul Tigh. The name, however, had to be changed due to legal issues that Moore was unable to recall in that podcast.
* Tigh is based off the character of Paul Eddington in the movie "In Harm's Way" portrayed by Kirk Douglas (with John Wayne).
'''Tom Zarek''' was a political activist for more than 30 years, fighting what he considered injustices against the Sagittaron colony. He was summarily imprisoned for some 20-25 years after blowing up a government building there. Assigned the prison number of [[893893]], Zarek was under consideration for parole at the time of the [[Cylon Attack|Cylon attack]].

== Biography ==

=== Before the Holocaust ===

Tom Zarek is a charismatic, eloquent and ideological political agitator who was incarcerated for destroying a government building on [[The Twelve Colonies#Sagittaron|Sagittaron]]. His 20-year incarceration lead him to be onboard the ''[[Astral Queen]]'', a [[FTL]]-capable prison ship that survived the holocaust. Through means unknown, he managed to become the figurehead for all the incarcerated persons aboard the ''[[Astral Queen]]'', and almost managed to take control of the ship through force. ([[Bastille Day]])

Zarek came from [[The Twelve Colonies#Sagittaron|Sagittaron]], a colony known to be mistreated by the other eleven [[Colonies]]. Through his experiences on that colony, he became an advocate of freedom from slavery. Zarek became a voice for the disenfranchised and, along with publishing a book that was virtually banned throughout the [[Colonies]], actively sought to fight against injustices.

To some he is considered a terrorist and nuisance for his tactics, which included the destruction of a government building that resulted in an unspecified loss of life. He believes in the efficacy of violence as a means of change, going as so far as to go to prison over a "matter of conscience" and his refusal of President [[Adar (RDM)|Adar]]'s politically motivated conditional pardon. (The condition being that he would publicly apologize and pledge to give up violence as a means of change.)

Even some of his own Sagittarons have an intense dislike of him, including Petty Officer [[Anastasia Dualla]]. Despite this, he became a public figure whose name had weight and almost became legendary, thanks to public opinion. ([[Bastille Day]])

== After the Exodus ==

After avoiding the <i>[[Astral Queen]]</i> commander's desire to euthanise the prisoners (thanks to President [[Laura Roslin]]'s humanitarian decision), (see: [[Mini-Series]]) Zarek apparently plotted to escape captivity. With the water shortage and the discovery of a planet that could replenish the lost water ([[Water]]), Commander [[Adama, William|Adama]], [[Tigh, Saul|Colonel Tigh]] and President [[Laura Roslin]] reluctantly elect to utilize the prisoners as badly needed manpower -- the condition being that they would not be treated as slaves and they would agree of their own volition. ([[Bastille Day]])

After an unsuccessful attempt by [[Lee Adama]] to persuade the prisoners to help in the recovery efforts, Zarek's sprung the prisoners' escape plan. The prisoners, under Zarek's command, usurped control of the <i>[[Astral Queen]]</i>, and taking her crew and visitors (the <i>[[Galactica]]</i> contingent) as prisoners. Zarek then laid out his terms: the resignation of [[Laura Roslin]] and her ministers, and the free and open elections for a new president, as he deemed her occupancy of that position to be illegitimate and illegal.

Unfortunately, Zarek's aims were not in keeping with his demands; he wanted a bloodbath to ensue, believing that all that people understood was violence, and that the bloodbath would destroy any credibility that [[Adama, William|William Adama]] and [[Roslin, Laura|Laura Roslin]] had.

When the situation deteriorated near the point of catastrophe for all involved, Tom Zarek, who was ready to sacrifice his life for his beliefs, was swayed by [[Lee Adama]]'s promise that he would uphold the [[Articles of Colonization]] and hold open elections for a new president, as well as give the ship over to the prisoners as a show of good faith.

== Attempts for Political Power ==
[[Image:Home_pt1_debate.jpg|thumb|left|[[Tom Zarek]] in debate with [[Quorum of Twelve|Quorum members]]. (C. Sci-Fi Channel)
]]
With a degree of freedom obtained by the prisoners - including control of the ''Astral Queen'', Zarek engaged in a steady effort to gain the goodwill of others of influence within the fleet. This effort included physical acts of support for other ships in the fleet (such as fixing the air filtration system on the ship occupied by [[Bagott, Marshall|Marshall Bagott]], a politician from Virgon (and later a member of the new [[Quorum of Twelve]]) - [[Colonial Day]]).

The result of his efforts was to be nominated as the Representative of [[The Twelve Colonies#Sagittaron|Sagittaron]] on the Quorum of Twelve, from which he was able to make a bid for the position of Vice President, with the support of those he had previously assisted, and possibly badgered ([[Colonial Day]]).

While Zarek's attempt at the Vice Presidency failed due to Doctor [[Gaius Baltar]] replacing [[Gray, Wallace|Wallace Gray]] as the alternative candidate, he has made it clear he will be standing against Roslin in the elections. Zarek remains possibly the most powerful and popular representative in the [[Quorum of Twelve]].

== Breakaway from the [[Fleet]] ==

The schism created by Commander Adama's unlawful arrest of President Roslin and [[Saul Tigh|Colonel Tigh]]'s declaration of [[Wikipedia:martial law|martial law]] presented Zarek with an opportunity to convince others that Adama was after control of the fleet, no doubt aided by Tigh's inexperience with dealing with the government and press. Zarek was later privy to the information regarding Roslin's terminal cancer, after Tigh had permitted the Quorum of Twelve to see her in ''Galactica'''s brig. ([[Fragged]])

After the ''[[Gideon]]'' incident, where four civilians died, Roslin and crewmembers of ''Galactica'' orchestrated Roslin's escape. Lee Adama, knowing that they would have to be on the move throughout the fleet, enlisted Zarek's assistance in secreting Roslin away from Tigh and Commander Adama. ([[Resistance]], [[The Farm]]) After Roslin played the "religious card", Roslin and Zarek lead a [[Laura Roslin faction|separatist fleet]] back to [[Kobol]] in order to await [[Kara Thrace]]'s return with the [[Arrow of Apollo]], which would be subsequently used to unlock the [[Tomb of Athena]]. Zarek, with his associate [[Meier]], planned on eliminating the young Captain Adama on Kobol, knowing about Zeus' warning that any trip to Kobol would "exact a price in blood". Zarek's reason for removing Adama would create a power vacuum, allowing Zarek to take the position as captain of the Fleet, while Roslin would remain president. ([[Home, Part I]])

This plan was abandoned when Commander Adama and the remaining Fleet followed the breakaway fleet to Kobol. However, his aide and follower Meier intended to eliminate both Adamas, soliciting the help of the [[Caprica]] copy of [[Sharon Valerii]] that returned with [[Karl Agathon]] and Kara Thrace. Unfortunately for Zarek, Meier and a lackey were killed by Valerii at the entrance to the Tomb of Athena, though no charges were ever laid on Zarek for no one could prove his complicity in the attempted murders.
