As the ship is operating with a minimal crew complement leading up to its expected decommissioning, Cottle is the only real physician/surgeon aboard Galactica (perhaps in the entire Fleet), supported by a handful of medics such as Layne Ishay and Howard Kim. There is a Dr. Stoffa in the fleet as a colleague of Cottle that he sometimes sends patients to, but if he is also a physician (possibly a psychiatrist) or a Clinical Psychologist is not made clear (Hero).

Cottle is somewhat eccentric -- a heavy smoker, despite knowing the risks, and one not overly impressed by positions of power. He is, above all things, a healer. To him, nothing else really matters, be it rank, riches, or species.

Biography
Cottle is the third person in the Fleet to learn about President Laura Roslin's fight with cancer (Act of Contrition), after Lee Adama (Bastille Day) and Billy Keikeya (Miniseries). He agrees to treat her condition, without revealing it to anyone else, and further agrees to support more unorthodox treatments such as chamalla extract (against his better judgment). Knowing the extent of her illness and Roslin's reluctance to undergo diloxin therapy, the doctor also recommends prayer.

Cottle takes a personal interest in Kara Thrace's recovery from injuries suffered during a mission (You Can't Go Home Again). The doctor works with Lee Adama to get her out of sickbay (Six Degrees of Separation) without initial success.

Grumpy of attitude, yet always professional, Cottle instantly inspires trust, despite his attitude.

After the assassination attempt on William Adama, (Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II) Cottle is unavailable to stabilize the Commander as he is aboard another ship in the Fleet. Matters worsen after Galacticas jump to the emergency coordinates separates Cottle and the battlestar. Colonel Tigh orders Cottle's medics to stop Adama's internal bleeding (Scattered). However, while the medics stabilize the Commander's condition, they are unable to fully stop his bleeding. Cottle finally arrives and is able to operate on Commander Adama. After much risky work, the doctor saves Adama's life (Fragged).

Cottle speaks rather contemptuously of Colonel Saul Tigh's authority. When Tigh asks of Adama's condition as Cottle begins surgery to save the Commander's life, he tells the XO, "How should I know? I'm not a psychic. Now get the hell out of here" (Fragged). Later, after Tigh orders an ill-advised attempt to restore supply runs to Galactica on the Gideon, resulting in four civilian deaths, Cottle is anything but sympathetic when Tigh asks what happened: "What'd you expect, genius? You put a pilot in charge of crowd control" (Resistance).

At the request of President Roslin, despite her straight-to-the-point warning about its illegality and danger (Cottle: "You're a lousy salesman."), he assists Roslin in escaping Galactica by filing a request for a Raptor flight away from the battlestar, to care for patients on other ships. Roslin leaves Galactica on this "appropriated" Raptor with Lee Adama at the helm (Resistance).

Major Cottle performs a series of medical scans on Gaius Baltar's head at Baltar's request. Unknown to Cottle, Baltar is looking to see if there is a Cylon computer chip implanted into his brain. The scans show absolutely nothing unusual, and Cottle dismisses Baltar as a hypochondriac ("There's one on every bloody ship.") (Home, Part II).

Even Cottle's stony exterior gives way to the pain he sees on Laura Roslin's face when he gives her a new prognosis on her fight with cancer. Her cancer has spread aggressively, and the good doctor gives Roslin, on the outside, one month to live (Flight of the Phoenix). His concern for Cylon Sharon Valerii and her unborn hybrid child is remarkable, especially in the face of the rest of the crew's distrust and even hatred of her, hinting at his extremely strict sense of medical ethics. He describes her attempted rape by Lt. Thorne as "unforgivable," and voices his opposition to Baltar using Sharon's baby's blood as a cure for Roslin's cancer (Resurrection Ship, Part I, Epiphanies).

Cottle gains a reputation among the Fleet for performing abortions. When Rya Kibby, a young Gemenese girl, wanted to end her pregnancy, she stows away to get aboard Galactica and see Cottle. Cottle explains the situation to Admiral Adama by acknowledging, "I get a note that a girl's on the way. She arrives. I do my work. And then she leaves. I don't ask a lot of questions." When Admiral Adama asks Kibby to return to her parents, Cottle suggests that the girl instead request political asylum aboard Galactica, earning a stare from Adama (The Captain's Hand).

After the election of President Baltar and the settlement of New Caprica, Cottle, like most of Galacticas crew, retires from military duty. One year after the election he serves as a doctor on New Caprica in private practice (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II).

During the Cylon occupation of the planet, Cottle continues his work as a doctor and surgeon. He works as a neutral party in the Cylon-run state in New Caprica City, treating human and Cylon alike. When a copy of Number Three questions why he does this he tells her he would do the same for anyone who came to him (Exodus, Part I).

Notes
*Cottle's counterpart in the Original Series is Salik.
*Doctor Cottle is mentioned as holding the rank of Major, though he would not be in the line of command. He would presumably never take command unless each and every senior officer was already out of commission.
*In the DVD commentary for "Act of Contrition", RDM states that actor Donnelly Rhodes was one of the three finalists up for the role of Colonel Saul Tigh, though in the end the part was given to one of the other finalists, Michael Hogan.
*Doctor Cottle is named after Michael Rymer's childhood pediatrician, who Rymer tells was actually a very nice person, unlike his fictional counterpart.
*Doctor Cottle is first mentioned in "Bastille Day," but the character does not appear until the next episode, "Act of Contrition."

Captain Aaron Kelly is presumably fourth-in-command aboard battlestar Galactica, ranking behind Admiral William Adama, Colonel Saul Tigh, and Major Lee Adama. As the LSO (Landing Signal Officer), he is responsible for flight operations and aided in the capture of the first instance of the Cylon agent known as Aaron Doral (Miniseries).

Shortly after a Cylon nuclear weapon struck Galactica in the initial wave of the Fall of the Twelve Colonies, Kelly began giving orders to aid crewmembers trapped or fighting damage in the port flight pod, where the detonation occurred, after Executive Officer Saul Tigh hesitates. Tigh soon countermands Kelly and orders the flight pod vented to stop the fires (Miniseries).

When Commander William Adama is shot by the Cylon infiltrator Sharon Valerii, Lieutenant Felix Gaeta reminds him on his arrival to CIC that Kelly is now second-in-command (as this event preceeded Lee Adama's promotion to Major) (Scattered). As a strong believer in Commander Adama's philosophy on computer networks, he voices his objections over networking Galactica's computer systems after the battlestar loses the Fleet due to incorrect jump coordinates, asserting that the Old Man would never even consider Gaeta's option to network the computers for a faster Jump calculation. Soon afterwards, when Galactica is boarded by Cylon Centurions, Kelly assists Lieutenant Gaeta and Colonel Tigh in coordinating an effort to stop their advance (Valley of Darkness).

Captain Kelly apparently returns to his day to day duties as LSO, coordinating Viper landings from the port hangar bay, as Commander Adama returned to duty and the normal chain of command was restored. He is on duty when Kat, disoriented from stims, crash lands her Viper onto the landing bay (Final Cut).

During Battle of New Caprica, and presumably in the year and four months leading to it, he performs Gaeta's role as tactical officer on Galactica (Exodus, Part I and Part II).

Notes
*Kelly's Season 1 disappearance and sudden reappearance in Season 2 has become the subject of a running gag in fandom. However, the on-screen revelation of his duties as Landing Signal Officer tucked away in Galacticas flight pod did much to quell this.
*Kelly's first name is revealed in the closing episode credits of "Final Cut."
*Kelly reappears again during Admiral Adama's speech at the end of "Exodus, Part I."
*It is unknown why Helo was chosen to become Galactica's XO prior to the Cylon occupation; Captain Kelly was the nominal third-in-command and should have assumed the post after Colonel Tigh and his wife settled on New Caprica.
The Centurion is the workhorse of the Cylon Empire. Acting as infantry, pilots, and even cavalry (as in "The Lost Warrior") the Centurion is as versatile as it is shiny. Used in any front-line encounter, Centurions are the only type of Cylon a Colonial Warrior is likely to ever directly encounter (Saga of a Star World).

Cylon Centurions typically respond to orders with the iconic phrase "By your command".

Centurions are constructed using highly advanced robotics, beyond the capabilities of the Colonials to understand easily. As part of a ruse Dr. Wilker attempts to reconstruct and reprogram a Centurion. The reprogrammed Centurion manages to move stiffly, but lacks the dexterity of a fully functional unit and destroys the controls of the Raider when it is instructed to fly (Baltar's Escape).

Cylon Centurions are commonly armed with bayonet-equipped Laser Rifles, as well as swords for close combat and execution (Saga of a Star World).

"By your command" is arguably the most popular phrase of the "Battlestar Galactica" saga.

Original series usage
* "By your command" spoken by a TOS Centurion: TOS By Your Command.mp3<br/>

The phrase is frequently said by the robotic soldiers of the Cylon Empire in the Original Series in a neutral metallic voice as the affirmative response to an order from another Cylon Centurion, the Imperious Leader, or other authority. The phrase is iconic of the Cylons' nature as a robotic race.

Re-imagined series usage
* "By your command" spoken by a Cylon agent: Mini Series By Your Command.mp3

In the Re-imagined Series, the phrase has been said twice by copies of Number Six, once to a copy of Sharon Valerii in response to finding the escaped Fleet of refugee survivors of the genocidal Cylon attack on the Colonies (Miniseries), and again (barely audible) during the episode "Colonial Day."

Since these Cylon agents appear to run their Cylon fleet as a collective, the use of "By your command" may be less of a command acknowledgement. The use of the phrase may be more analogous to the Colonial affirmation "So say we all", particularly in light of these Cylons' practice of a monothestic religion, complete with commandments.

Note
*A friend of Ron D. Moore, "Roswell" TV series writer Breen Frazier, indicated to Moore that he was surprised that the popular phrase from the Original Series was missing from the early script of the Miniseries. Moore recalled that Breen asked how could the new show be called Battlestar Galactica, without the use of the phrase, "By your command" (Source: The Official Companion).

: For Centurions from the Original Series, see Centurion (TOS).

The basic unit of Cylon ground forces, the Cylon Centurion appears to be an upgrade to the Cylon Centurion Model 0005. They have long, talon-like fingers with multiple joints and have a double barreled automatic projectile weapon mounted on the end of each arm. These newer, fiercer Centurions are capable of moving extremely fast via bipedal locomotion and are capable of jumping over obstacles. The projectile guns built into each arm are so powerful that they make counterattacks very difficult by Colonials since the barrage is, in effect, much like a gatling gun. Unlike the Model 0005, a single Centurion is more than enough to terrorize a squad of Colonial fighters. They also use mortars in combat. In addition, their fingers can be used as bladed close combat weapons.

It is unknown whether the Centurions can "speak." It is certainly possible that they communicate with each other via some sort of computer network, and thus have no need for verbal speech. Original-series Centurions would respond to orders with the iconic phrase "By your command".

The Cylon Centurions may also have different armor options. For instance, a small number of them wreaked havoc when boarding Galactica, and could only be destroyed using explosive rounds (Valley of Darkness).

Centurions encountered on Caprica reacted more slowly, acted less intelligently, and were more easily destroyed by small arms fire. This may be due to the Cylons' plans for Helo and the copy of Sharon Valerii with him; killing them would render their experiments worthless. A similar group of Centurions found on Kobol during the episode Fragged were equally less individually intelligent. It may be that these Centurions are very simple soldiers that, despite their menacing statistics, are limited in their evolution and programming. Centurions are not sentient, and are not downloaded upon destruction.

While primarily mechanical, as opposed to the biomechanical Raiders and basestars, it has been hinted by humanoids during a discussion of the viral infection that the Centurions have at least some biomechanical components, and that Centurions, Raiders, basestar, Hybrids and humanoids all stem from the same genetic source. However their adverse affect to the virus could also be a result of a possible wireless link to the Hybrid when it died (Torn).

On New Caprica, the Centurions are used for a variety of jobs. Among them guards, soldiers and executioners.

When the Cylons created their new Centurions, they did not give them sentience, making them rely solely on programming. Ironically this was done, according to information from Sharon Agathon, to prevent another robotic rebellion similar to the one the Cylons themselves originally orchestrated. Moreover, the Centurions are programmed to not harm any of the 12 humanoid Cylon models and they cannot distinguish one copy from another (Precipice). However, if ordered to do so they can terminate humanoid Cylon models and have the logs ordered erased to prevent the discovery of this act or unit knowledge of the act (Hero).

Bullethead is a Colonial nickname for these advanced and deadly Cylon constructs (Exodus, Part I).

Cinematic Notes
The creators of the Re-imagined Series decided that using actors in an elaborate Cylon robot outfit (as was done in the Original Series) would detract from the realism of the series. They decided to make fully computer-generated Cylon Centurions for the new series.

Inaugural director Michael Rymer wanted the new Cylon warrior to blend in and avoid detracting from the live actor's performances. However, the new designs were eye-catching, and the new robot became a popular addition to many scenes. The virtual Cylons are designed with full articulation in the hands and joints that gives a realistic appearance to the viewer. Initially the new warrior was built with more human movement, such as swaggering. However, the movements did not fit the robotic attitude that the writers wanted to convey and were later discarded.

Actors interact with a life-size cardboard stand-in when filming a scene that will later have virtual Cylon warriors inserted. Some times human actors (production assistants in reality) stand in for the CG Centurions in more complex shots. As revealed in a Video Blog entry on SciFi's Galactica website, stand-ins portraying Centurions are made to wear thick black vests with the word CENTURION printed across them. Much like the cardboard stand-ins the "actors" are then digitally painted out of the shot and replaced with virtual Centurions.

Louanne "Kat" Katraine was the assumed name of a young woman named Sasha, a drug runner on Caprica with flying experience (The Passage). She is selected as a candidate pilot ("nugget") for Viper training under the command of Lieutenant Kara "Starbuck" Thrace (Act of Contrition). While she is a new pilot, she has a taste for fighting, and is often on the front lines when Galactica engages Cylon forces. She becomes Galactica&#39; CAG during the colonization and occupation period of New Caprica.

Katraine later dies (off-screen) after receiving cumulatively fatal radiation exposure while escorting civilian ships through a star cluster to a planet with a food source (The Passage).

Biography
Katraine's real name is actually Sasha. She took the name "Louanne Katraine" from a girl who died two days before the attack. She was a drug runner in the Twelve Colonies working for a person named Enzo (The Passage).

Katraine is selected from relative obscurity to become one of Galacticas first intake of trainee pilots after 13 experienced pilots were killed in a freak accident (Act of Contrition).

Described as a "boonie jumper", Katraine is placed under the instruction of Kara Thrace, alongside nugget pilots Brendan Constanza and Perry, with whom she forms a friendship.

Thrown in at the deep end - flying Vipers on their very first day of training, none of the nuggets perform particularly well - Kat in particular fails to make a combat landing on Galactica. Thrace washes out the entire group of candidates until Commander William Adama later forces Thrace to reinstate them.

Katraine's training continues until she is selected to fly with Lee Adama during a raid to secure a tylium mine from the Cylons (The Hand of God). Her fellow nuggets Perry and Stepchild are killed in this action, but she and Hot Dog survive and are greeted as heroes on their return to Galactica.

Kat participates in the defense of Galactica when the battlestar becomes separated from the Fleet, and has to face down a Cylon basestar in order to relocate it (Scattered).

After Lee Adama's defection to the Laura Roslin faction, his replacement, the newly promoted Captain George Birch negligently endangers Katraine during a training exercise. She is almost killed when Birch incorrectly directs her to attack an asteroid target as Hot Dog fires a missile at the target. Katraine's improving piloting skills save her from a dangerous collision with debris (Home, Part I).

Kat is later promoted from cadet to the rank of Lieutenant. She becomes increasingly exhausted with the mounting pressures of service in the Fleet with long hours, constant danger, and no possiblity of reinforcement. While trying to combat her fatigue, Kat becomes dependent on stims, of which the effects of their overuse make her emotionally unstable. She "moons" a documentary crew for her "buddies" on Freighter 212, berates Chief Tyrol for mechanical failures that are beyond his control, and later crashes her Viper into the landing bay, totalling the vehicle (Final Cut, Flight of the Phoenix). She is pulled from flight status for some time, but is reinstated by the time that the advanced battlestar Pegasus joins the Fleet , when she flies wingman to Apollo on CAP when first contact is made with Pegasus.

In the wake of Admiral Cain's integration of Galactica and Pegasus officers, Kat appears to have been made the acting-CAG of Galactica flight team. With Starbuck and Apollo both transferred to Pegasus and the failure of Cpt. George Birch as CAG during Lee Adama's absence, Katraine appears to be the most likely choice to fill the command vacuum. She is flight leader of the Viper wing that stands off against the Pegasus Vipers. In spite of making repeated requests for firing clearance, she manages to keep the situation from degenerating into a fire fight, and avoids several collision attempts in the fighters' deadly "chicken" game, each attempting to force the other side to fire first (Resurrection Ship, Part I).

On day 189 of the human exodus, Kat is assigned CAP with Starbuck. Kat's maturity and past insensitivity show growth when Starbuck orders her to stop her small talk about Starbuck's off-hours behavior, which Kat does so without skipping a beat and returns to business by requesting permission to do a weapons check. As Kat test-fires her Viper's guns, an ammo misfire destroys Kat's port gun and sends debris at Starbuck's Viper, cracking her cockpit window. The two declare an emergency and safely return to Galactica. The cause of the malfunction was soon determined to be sabotage later blamed on a civilian ammunition worker that is part of the "Demand Peace" movement (Epiphanies).

Katraine is more than personally upset with Starbuck's apparent behavior issues and doesn't really care. While Kat obviously admires Kara Thrace, she tires quickly of Starbuck's drinking and bragging, which is affecting her work, and in turn affecting the pilots, especially the nuggets. Fed up with Starbuck's lording over the "Top Gun" beer stein as well as the rampaging Raider ace known as "Scar," Kat makes a bet with Starbuck on who will destroy the morale-sucking Raider first.

Kat manages pilot combat reviews, having become a highly skilled tactical pilot herself. She grimaces at Starbuck's inefficiencies and chimes in often to correct or chide Starbuck, much to Thrace's chagrin. Things come to a head in their rivalry when Kat openly criticizes Starbuck for substituting Jo-Jo for patrol rather than flying herself (she awoke that morning hungover and unable to fly). Jo-Jo and his wingman are both killed, and Kat is incensed. But instead of Starbuck delivering the first punch, it's Kat that delivers it. Their fight is interrupted by Captain Adama, who orders them on patrol near the Big Spud. Kat and Starbuck find Scar, and Starbuck's Viper is damaged in a near-successful ambush. The consummate wingman, Kat continually speaks to Starbuck to get a bearing, although Starbuck resists out of pride rather than working jointly to destroy Scar. When Starbuck realizes that because of Samuel Anders she doesn't want to die in order to take Scar with her, she guides Kat in to her position, where Kat delivers the killing blow to Scar.

Kat chides Starbuck once more in the pilot's recreation room as she holds the Top Gun mug. Starbuck pours champagne in the mug and tells Kat, "You've earned it." Kat's slight smile in response is not only that of smugness, but also that of honor - for Starbuck to tell her that she was (at least for the time being) the best - is pleasing as a master would compliment a student (Scar). Kat's smugness is short-lived, as Starbuck offers a toast to all the pilots who died during their flight from the colonies. Overwhelmed with the memory of lost comrades, Kat nearly bursts into tears.

By the time of the Cylon invasion of New Caprica, with Lee Adama in command of Pegasus and Kara Thrace having left the fleet and settled planetside, Katraine has been promoted to Galacticas CAG (Exodus, Part I). During the Battle of New Caprica, she leads a group of Vipers escorting decoy Raptors, and presumably assists in the defense of Galactica in the following space battle (Exodus, Part II). Following the destruction of Pegasus, Lee Adama returns to Galactica and replaces Katraine as the CAG, who in turn becomes the leader of Blue Squadron (Torn).

During a food shortage throughout the fleet, Galacticas pilots are tasked with safely guiding the civilian ships through a highly radioactive star cluster to a food source on the other side. During this time Katraine encounteres Enzo, who survived the attack and calls her by her real name, Sasha. Enzo confronts Katraine and threatens to reveal Kat's past to others unless she helps him. Thrace observes the argument and later confronts Enzo about it, who in turn reveals Katraine's secret to Thrace. Katraine confirms it to Thrace, who is angered over the secret, even suggesting that Kat could have possibly unknowingly aiding the Cylons in their infiltration of Caprica. Katraine begs Thrace not to tell Admiral Adama, saying that she wants to tell him herself.

Before the final trip through the passage, Katraine, who had already received a deadly dose of radiation on earlier trips, switches radiation badges with Helo. During the final trip, she loses track of the Fanu Sadin, but remains in the passage until she finds the vessel and joins the rest of the Fleet on the other side. Upon landing, Katraine is celebrated as a hero, but then succumbs to radiation poisoning, collapsing on the flight deck.

On her deathbed, Katraine receives an apology from Thrace, as well as an overdose of sleeping pills that would allow her to pass away painlessly. Admiral Adama also visits Katraine, giving her an honorary promotion to CAG, and then tells her how the situation reminds him of when his son, Zak, was born. Kat tries telling him about her past, but he cuts her off saying it doesn't matter. After Katraine's death, Thrace places a photo of her on the wall of rememberance, and Admiral Adama makes her posthumous promotion official by switching her name on the pilot roster with Lee Adama's (The Passage).

Notes
*Katraine's assumed first name, Louanne, was revealed in the episode "Final Cut" during her interview with D'anna Biers, although it is spelled as "Louann" in the closing credits (as it did before in "Home, Part I"). The spelling is corrected from "Resurrection Ship, Part I" on out.
*It was initially assumed that some of Kat's family may have survived the Fall of the Twelve Colonies, as implied when Kat shouted "Hi, Mom!" while waving into the camera in "Final Cut". However, given what was revealed in "The Passage", it may have been ficticious.
*In the DVD commentary for "Act of Contrition", David Eick and Ron D. Moore elaborate on the increased role of the nugget pilots as the series progressed:

:Eick: This young actress playing Kat has proven to be--and there's Bodie Olmos, Eddie's son, in the center there who's Hot Dog, he's also become a recurring character.
:RDM: Well those three in the front, Chuckles, Hot Dog, and Kat, they all became "pilots" to us. And I don't think we really had any expectation of that. The idea was we were going to do "the nuggets", "the new pilots", was just going to be its own kind of story, and maybe you might see one of these guys again later. And what started happening is the writers just started putting them in, like almost every scene that we dealt with the pilots (of Galactica) so these became our "recognizable faces".
:Eick: Kat is quite fine. She's someone we're now talking about, and have already, built into a much more prominent character. She's just a really, really talented actor, and she's someone who in a very different way than Katee (Starbuck), just exemplifies that sort of masculine fortitude, despite being a woman, that is required to be a pilot like this. In one of the upcoming episodes (Scar), we're actually going to deal with the tension between Kara Thrace and Kat.
:RDM: Yeah, what happens when your protege starts outdistancing you. What happens when you train this young pilot, and it's great that she's a hot shot and all that, and then wait a minute, what if she starts being better than you?
Overview
:The Fleet makes a stop at a planet and discovers the location of a religious artifact that may further lead the way to Earth—for both the Colonials and the Cylons.

Summary
Act 1
* The Fleet is mending its wounds from its passage to the algae planet. The harvest proceeds well and is into its 14th day, and appears to be closing up shop.
*Starbuck flies from Galactica to the harvest camp in a Raptor, intentionally creating more noise than usual. Lee Adama is managing the harvest operations with his wife, Anastasia Dualla.
*When Major Adama leaves to greet Kara Thrace, Dualla's face barely hides her disappointment and frustration at Adama's hasty departure.
*Major Adama greets Thrace with an admonishment of her piloting, but his comments are very brief; the two pilots embrace and passionately kiss.
*Adama wants he and Thrace to stop hiding their feelings and divorce their respective spouses. Thrace reminds him that marriage in the eyes of the gods is a sacrament; she has made a vow she will not break. Adama reminds her that their repeated secret encounters would be frowned on by the gods as well. Adama becomes frustrated, Thrace holds her position, and the two are left trapped in their feelings.
*On a basestar, the little human/Cylon hybrid, Hera, is crying and is not well. Gaius Baltar is awakened by her cries and visits the child, who is attended by the Number Eight known once as Sharon Valerii.
*Galen Tyrol is part of the harvest team. He is repeatedly distracted by something which apparently only he can sense, and keeps looking out towards the unexplored hills beyond the harvest site. Samuel Anders, also working on the harvest, comments that the algae harvest tastes as badly as it smells. Tyrol jokes that the algae is "breakfast, lunch and dinner until we can find a hot-fudge planet."
*After sensing something strange one time too many, Tyrol leaves the harvest camp and begins a trek to a mountainous area. He discovers a door--not a naturally-carved one, but a rectangular door, apparently constructed by human hands.
*Tyrol enters the door and walks through a passageway into an immensely large domed room, carved from within the mountain. In the center of the room is a center spire that reaches high into the structure. The spire is surrounded by five pentagonal obelisks. The center spire has ancient tribal carvings at the bottom, as well as illuminated crystalline pillars atop it. Tyrol, the son of a priest and an oracle, has a fair idea of what he has discovered: The Temple of Five.

Act 2
*Carbon dating of the temple indicates that is is approximately 4000 years old, which matches when the 13th colony left Kobol in search of Earth.
*Laura Roslin discusses what she knows with Tyrol over wireless about this special temple as it is told in the Sacred Scrolls in Admiral William Adama's quarters. But before they can digest the information further, they are alerted to four basestars that jump into orbit of the planet and move towards the Fleet.
*Admiral Adama orders the civilian Fleet to escape to emergency jump coordinates, but leaves Galactica behind; Adama does not want to repeat the situation on New Caprica, where he retreated with the remains of the Fleet and abandoned the colonists there. Adama chooses to stay to protect his harvest team until they can escape. He and Roslin also agree that, if the Temple of Five has a marker to Earth, they must not let the Cylons take it.
*However, very uncharacteristically, the Cylons do not attack. In fact, they request communications with Adama. The voice that Adama hears is not a welcome one: It is Gaius Baltar's.
*The Cylons request a meeting on Galactica to discuss the Eye of Jupiter. The Number Three copy that Baltar calls D'Anna, a copy of Cavil, Baltar, and the Number Eight copy once known as Sharon Valerii board the battlestar under heavy marine guard.
*The virtual Number Six in Baltar's mind warns him that, while he may feel like he has returned home, he cannot stay: The Colonials would "toss (him) into an airlock and have a party."
*On the way to the meeting, Sharon Agathon recognizes the Eight copy as the former "Boomer" Valerii. Colonel Saul Tigh denies her entry into the meeting. The two Eights are left outside the doorway, facing each other with mutual looks of contempt.
*The two sides meet. Baltar attempts to take the initiative in an attempt to serve as a mediator, but this infuriates Roslin so strongly that she leaves the meeting. Adama receives the Cylon's terms: Leave peacefully so that they can gather the Eye of Jupiter, and they will not attack. Cavil, with a sardonic face, adds the surrender of Baltar to the terms as well, to the former president's and Three's shock, "to sweeten the pot."
*Boomer-Eight tells Sharon Agathon that Hera is alive, but unwell, on their basestar. Agathon refuses to believe her.
*Admiral Adama is not amused by the Cylon's deal. Close to Three's face, Adama states his terms: Galactica will lay waste to the whole continent, destroying the planet's treasures with his nuclear arsenal should the Cylons attempt to land on the planet. The two sides depart in a state of détente.

Act 3
*Admiral Adama manages to get an order to his son of the situation and to destroy the site if the Cylons invade before the Cylons jam all wireless communications.
*Major Adama instructs Samuel Anders to organize fireteams to defend against a probable Cylon incursion. Anders, also realizing what Adama has been doing with Thrace, is very angry and initially refuses to oblige until Thrace asks him to comply.
*Cally and Galen Tyrol speak in the temple. He tells her of how he was annoyed at his parents and their worship. Cally sees reverence on his face, despite his general mood of disbelief.
*Lieutenant Felix Gaeta has conducted some scans of the star system of the algae planet. He warns that the sun of this system is in danger of becoming a supernova very soon. Gaeta, who normally is as secular as his commander, finds it very strange how the Cylons and Colonials arrive at this one place at this time just before the planet's imminent destruction. Adama notes that the "higher powers" at work appear to have a strange sense of humor.
*The basestar command, with Baltar in attendance, discuss their plan to get the Eye. Cavil feels that annilihation of Galactica is the best option with the standoff (given that they are machines that can wait out humanity for years, or even millenia, and find Earth eventually).
*D'Anna, without consulting the other Cylons, has solely initiated the jamming of Colonial communications, and has already sent a Heavy Raider with a squad of Centurions to the planet as the basestar fleet jumped in, successfully avoiding Colonial detection. This action confuses the others, particularly Caprica-Six.
*D'Anna notes that, as soon as the Centurions recover the Eye, the other Cylons can destroy Galactica.
*The Centurions on the planet are seen connecting additional materials to their back as they march away from their ship.

Act 4
*The Colonials, with Anders at the lead, plan out their defense on the planet. One team will manage ammunition distribution, another team will create tylium mines.
*As the harvest team-turned-point defense teams leave the tent, Major Adama compliments Anders for his honest, to-the-point direction to the group, indicating that Anders would make a good officer. Anders scoffs at Adama's compliment, inferring that he knows what Adama and Thrace have been doing. When Adama tries to object, Anders tells Adama not to insult his intelligence, as he is aware that Adama is not that only one that Thrace has enjoyed sexual company with.
*On the basestar, in the Hybrid's room, D'Anna-Three is savoring the opportunity to see the faces of the final five Cylon agents--"maybe the face of God himself." The Hybrid notes, in her quizzical manner, that the "five lights of the apocalypse" and the "sins" will be revealed only to the "chosen one," lifting her head and staring directly at Baltar as she says "the chosen one" repeatedly. D'Anna's eyes are closed and is not aware that the Hybrid is addressing Baltar.
*Caprica-Six enters and questions D'Anna's intentions. D'Anna dismisses their three-way relationship as she tells of her plan to leave with Baltar to discover the secrets of the Temple. Six is visibly hurt at being left behind.
*The planet team begin their final preparations, led by Dualla. With wireless jammed, she notes how hardwired observation points are to be created to warn of any Cylon advance, with Starbuck's Raptor taking point with directions to fly to the nearest observation point to relay any sightings. Thrace's annoyance at Dualla's precise direction leads to some catty replies by Thrace, which Dualla ignores.
*As the observation teams take their positions, Starbuck begins her recon flight. As she turns along a ravine, she spots the Centurion emplacement and is immediately fired upon by the Cylon's missile battery. Starbuck tries to evade and successfully manages to relay that she found Centurions before her Raptor is struck by a missile. With the controls on fire and visibility lost, Starbuck screams as she keeps her hands on the flight controls and fights for control of the Raptor. The Battle of the Algae Planet begins.
*As President Roslin explores what little is known about the Temple of Five from the Sacred Scrolls, Admiral Adama interrupts her, telling her of Boomer's return and asking if the story of Hera's faked death was true. Roslin admits the truth. When she tries to explain the reasons why, Adama abruptly leaves in anger.
*Adama tells the Agathons of Hera's discovery, and both are incensed. When Helo argues how painful it was for them and how Adama should know the pain of the moment, Adama reminds him that, unlike his son, their child is still alive, and that they should be grateful for that. Sharon Agathon glares at Adama and says she wants to see her child, inferring a greater intention.
*Major Adama reports to Anders that Starbuck's Raptor has gone down, but also tells him that a rescue mission is out of the question; they haven't enough manpower to rescue Thrace and defend their position.
*Six Heavy Raiders leave a basestar towards the planet.
*Galactica sees the Heavy Raiders on DRADIS immediately. Tigh feels that this is a test to see if the Colonials are bluffing. Roslin believes that they were bluffing until Adama orders Hoshi to arm of a series of missile tubes, each containing a nuclear missile.
*As Anders argues for Thrace's rescue, Lee Adama explodes in defense of the mission, arguing the point that he has known and cared for Thrace for much longer than Anders, who tells Adama he is going after his wife. Adama's troops hold Anders at gunpoint.
*Unaware how events are escalating around and above him, Chief Tyrol illuminates the carved writings of the Temple with his flashlight and reads the inscriptions, trying to locate the actual resting place of the Eye. At one point, his flashlight's beam moves close to the target-shaped symbol in the center of the central spire.
*The basestar command detects the radiation signature of the missiles as Galactica targets the Temple.
*Adama authorizes the release of the missiles.

Questions
*Will Adama go through with his plan to nuke the planet?
*Did Starbuck survive the crash of her Raptor?
*What is the Eye of Jupiter and how does it point the way to Earth?
*How much truth is there to Anders' claim of Kara Thrace's chronic infidelity ("You think you're the first?")?
*How will Athena and Helo knowing their child is still alive affect their relationship with Adama?
*How will Adama finding out Hera is still alive affect his relationship with Roslin?
*Is there a connection between the Temple of Five and the five missing Cylon models?
*Who or what is "The One Whose Name Cannot Be [Told(?)]" whom the Five supposedly follow? Is this a reference to the Jealous God, who may or may not be the "one true God" of the Cylons?
*What are the "sins" of the Five that the Hybrid speaks of?
*Who is the "Chosen One" that the Hybrid speaks of?
*What consequences will Number Three's actions have within the Cylon society?
*Why does D'Anna feel that Caprica-Six cannot accompany her and Baltar?
*What is the Fleet doing without the presence of Galactica?
*Will there be further confrontations between the two "Sharon Valerii"-type Eight models, as seen in the passageway tirade between Boomer and Athena?
*Were the Cylons really willing to hand Baltar over to the Fleet?
*When did Boomer go over to the Cylons' way of thinking? In this episode she clearly doesn't seem to think of herself as human anymore like she did in "Downloaded."
*Was the Cylon that was pointed out to be Boomer the same one that has been seen amongst the Cylon baseship leadership? If so, then her turning over to the Cylon side was complete by the time the Cylons had abandoned New Caprica.
*Is there a connection between Hera and the Eye of Jupiter?
*Does Dualla know about the affair between Lee and Kara?
*Will Hera be rescued from the Cylon baseship and returned to Athena?
*Did Adama inform Athena and Helo that it was the President who ordered the secret adoption of Hera?
*If Adama does fire the nuclear weapons, will the baseships destroy them before they reach the surface?
*What were the specifics of the target package selected by Adama?
*Did the Cylons experience the same trouble navigating through the star cluster that the Fleet did?

Analysis
*At least eighteen people perished as a result of navigating through the radiation field of the star cluster. Most of these casualties are likely the skeleton crews of the Adriatic and the Carina and one of them is Kat.
*This episode ends the debate whether Admiral Adama knew about President Roslin's secret plan to hide Hera ("Downloaded", "Exodus, Part I") -- he did not know.
*Caprica-Six and D'Anna's dialogue indicates that they have been intimate with each other as well as with Baltar.
*This is the first time the Cylons use "human" names on the basestar when not speaking to Baltar. D'Anna is named by Caprica-Six and another Number Three. Cavil's name is used by D'Anna.
*Coincidence (and destiny / predestination) seems to be a major theme with this episode: the humans & Cylons show up at the planet at the same time; the temple is discovered by Tyrol, son of a priest who revered this place; the planet is orbiting a star that will go supernova within days.
*At an unknown point in time, Galactica acquired at least four more nuclear warheads, bringing the total to at least seven; beginning the series with five and using one to destroy a basestar (Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II) and another being detonated by Gina on Cloud 9 (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II). Pegasus may be the source, as these warheads may have been resupplied from Pegasuss arsenal, which likely occurred during the events of "Pegasus".
*When the Hybrid speaks of the Chosen One, she looks directly at Baltar, not D'Anna, who has her eyes closed.
*Kara Thrace's explanation of marriage as a sacrament is similar to the principles of the Roman Catholic Church. In this religion, a marriage between a baptized man and woman is one of the seven sacraments of the faith. A sacramental marriage cannot be dissolved, but only reviewed later to determine if the marriage was valid at all. If the marriage is invalid, an annulment is allowed. This suggests, by extension, that Thrace and Anders have had dedication ceremonies (the Colonial equivalent of baptism) if such a requirement is needed by the gods.
*There is no "shaft of light" coming from any identifiable source in the Temple at the end of the episode except for Tyrol's flashlight as he explores and reads. The movement of the spotlight is caused by Tyrol's movement of the flashlight. Nothing is shown in the episode that suggests that anything inside the Temple is light-sensitive.
*The tylium planned for the mines could come from three possible sources: Starbuck's Raptor, the harvest camp's power generators, or reserves kept for the Raptors and other ships servicing the harvest camp. If it was taken from Starbuck's Raptor, this supports the high energy yield of the fuel that, at the same time, would not sacrifice the Raptor's flight ability.

Notes
*Writer Jane Espenson revealed that this episode was originally titled "Eye of Zeus." In the podcast for this episode, Ron Moore explains that "Eye of Jupiter" just sounded better than "Eye of Zeus" and thus it was changed.
*This episode, whose teaser clocks in at just over 11 minutes, has the longest teaser of any episode thus far, narrowly beating out that of "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I".
*Outdoor sequences of the algae planet were filmed near Kamloops, British Columbia .
*This episode was screened in movie theaters in six cities (New York, Atlanta, St. Louis, Chicago, Dallas and Los Angeles) by TV Guide as a free promotional on December 14, 2006 one day before the United States airing. The source was a digital copy with no commercials. In at least two cities (Chicago and Los Angeles) writers from the show held a Q&A session after for fans. Also in at least two cities more than one screening was held.
*Cylon baseship requests to speak with Admiral Adama
::Adama: Put it through speaker. This is Admiral Adama.
::Baltar: Admiral. I can't tell you what a genuine pleasure it is to hear your voice. This is Gaius Baltar.

*Baltar and Internal-Six discuss boarding the Galactica:
::Kara: Can I make a suggestion you won't like?
::Lee: Do you make any other kind?

*Cavil, aboard Galactica:
::Baltar: Wait a minute. If it wasn't for me the Cylons would've blown you out of the sky two seconds after we'd arrived.
::Roslin: (Roslin to Adama) I think you can handle this without me. . . if you can stomach it.
Jane Espenson discusses the original name for "The Eye of Jupiter" and references to it in "The Passage:"

: "When I wrote this episode, the upcoming episode was already well along, and it was called 'Eye of Zeus.' So all the dialogue in my episode reflected that. It got changed to Jupiter later, and I don't know why. It's always hard to get names to legally clear. All you need is one guy named Zeus who lives in North Hollywood and Standards and Practices is all over you to change the name. (deadpan) That's probably what happened."
