==Faster than Light Travel==

''FTL'' is a acronym for '''F'''aster-'''T'''han-'''L'''ight. The term refers to a means of interstellar propulsion utilized by the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylons]] and the [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)|Colonials]]. A common shorthand term for FTL travel is '''"jumping"'''.

The FTL drive makes interstellar travel possible for both the Colonials and [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylons]]. No longer confined to their own home solar system, the Cylons managed to avoid Colonial interference for 40 years after the [[Cylon War]] and establish their own home-world. However, not all ships — from small to large — are outfitted with these drives ([[Miniseries]]).

It's likely that FTL drives are not commonplace on many civilian ships because of the costs involved in using and maintaining the drive and the amount of [[tylium|fuel]] available. For some civilian ships that travel comparatively short distances between some destinations, such as the ill-fated [[Botanical Cruiser]], FTL may simply be impractical or unnecessary.

The technology behind FTL systems is such that, providing the relevant data is known, ships can jump with a high degree of accuracy, allowing ships to rendezvous in space and even "park" in a synchronous orbit directly above a given point on a planet's surface ([[Miniseries]]). Proper FTL use even enables vessels to arrive in crowded areas, such as the middle of an asteroid field or other ships, without the risk of collision and damage ([[The Hand of God (RDM)|The Hand of God]]).

No specific information on the technology of an FTL drive has been given in the Miniseries or regular series. We know only that ''Galactica'' has two FTL drives<ref>Dialogue from Colonel [[Saul Tigh|Tigh]] to Lt. [[Felix Gaeta|Gaeta]] instructs the tactical officer to "spin up FTL drives 1 and 2" in the [[Miniseries]].</ref>, and that other smaller or civilian ships have a single drive. We also know from dialogue that the FTL drives on ''Galactica'' are "spun up", suggesting the application of electromagnetic or rotational principles. Similarly it may be just a turn of phrase.

FTL jump drives can be used ''within'' an atmosphere. This Colonial tactic is used often to evade Cylon detection. While [[Raptor]]s primarily perform these kind of jumps, Admiral [[William Adama]] performs a daring intra-atmosphere jump at approximately 100,000 feet altitude with battlestar ''[[Galactica]]'' during the [[Battle of New Caprica]] to evade immediate Cylon detection. The battlestar jumps back to space a few hundred feet above the planet's surface after its Viper deployment. When ''Galactica'' jumps, the clouds surrounding it and the re-entry fires consuming its hull are "sucked" into the vacuum created by the sudden loss of mass. A sonic boom is also heard afterward ([[Exodus, Part II]]).

=== Colonial Limitations ===

* Colonial FTL systems are not small-scale, and cannot be installed into vehicles such as the [[Viper (RDM)|Viper]]. They can, however, be used on vehicles the size of a [[Raptor]], which is limited to brief, short-distance jumps. Raptors can make a sequence of short FTL "hops" in a row, to reach the same destination as a capital ship with a full-sized FTL drive ([[Miniseries]]).
* Colonial FTL systems cannot be used multiple times over a long period of time, for they are prone to breakdown after excessive, repetitive use ([[33]]).
* FTL jumps can apparently induce nausea or discomfort in some people, such as [[Cally]] ([[Miniseries]], [[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I]]).
* When "jumping" the Colonial drive systems are limited in size; this defines the maximum size to which a colonial vessel can be built (hence the need for certain [[Galactica type battlestar|battlestars]] to retract their landing pods and reduce their overall cross-section prior to a jump ([[Miniseries]], [[33]], etc.).
* Colonial FTL systems appear to be a holdover from the [[History of the Twelve Colonies#Exodus|Exodus]] from [[Kobol]], and their current designs have been developed to meet the needs of jumping between the [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)|Twelve Colonies]], and their outposts in other star systems. Colonial FTL capabilities have defined limits, referred to as the [[Red Line]], beyond which jumps may not be possible / could result in damage to a vessel's drive system / lead to navigational inaccuracies that might put the ship at risk.
* Navigators must be careful to plan FTL jump paths in order to keep a safe distance from planets or other large objects ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I]]).

Knowing the limitations of their own FTL drives, a team apparently led by Lieutenant [[Felix Gaeta]] successfully refitted a [[Raptor]] with the navigational computer from a captured [[Heavy Raider]] (presumably the one used by [[Kara Thrace]] to return from Caprica in "[[Home, Part I]]"). They later use its improved jump plots (with the aid of the cooperative copy of [[Sharon Valerii (Caprica copy)|Sharon Valerii]]) to coordinate a squadron of Raptors to fly back to Caprica for a rescue mission to retrieve a [[Caprica Resistance|team of resistance fighters there]] ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I]]). Despite the accuracy of the advanced Cylon FTL technology and Valerii's aid in marking the jumps, two Raptors do not complete the mission. One obtains corrupted jump data and finds itself within a nebula and a undiscovered [[New Caprica|habitable planet]], and is forced to return to the Fleet. The second Raptor also gets corrupted coordinates and materializes inside a nearby mountain on the final intra-atmosphere jump to Caprica, with the loss of ship and crew.

=== Cylon Advantages in FTL ===

* Cylon FTL systems can be manufactured on a smaller scale to their Colonial equivalent, thus allowing the [[Cylon Raider]] to be outfitted with an FTL drive. ([[Miniseries]]).
* Cylon FTL drive systems are far more efficient than their Colonial equivalent. Tests with the Raider captured by the [[Battlestar]] ''[[Galactica]]'' ([[You Can't Go Home Again]]) demonstrated that the drive could enable the Raider to jump directly from the vicinity of [[Kobol]] back to [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Caprica|Caprica]] ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I]]) - a jump completed by Lieutenant [[Kara Thrace]] during her search for the [[Arrow of Apollo]] ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II]]).
* That superiority however does not stem directly from the FTL drives, but mainly from the superior Cylon navigation system, resulting in more accurate jump calculations. Colonial vessels interfaced with a Cylon computer can increase their jump range by a factor greater than ten ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I]]).

Given that the Cylons left Colonial space to find their own planet, it is possible that their longer-range FTL capability was created in response to a desire to be able to cover the distance between their homeworld and those of the [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)|Twelve Colonies]] with a single jump.

==Background to FTL in the Re-imagined Series==

In establishing the series the creators of the [[Re-imagined|new Battlestar Galactica]] determined to keep everything within the show very "[[Naturalistic science fiction|natural]]". This means steering away from the standard clichés of television science-fiction: no bumpy-head aliens, no remarkable technology such as matter/anti-matter conversion, etc. So how is the concept of faster-than-light travel possible within this precept?

===Underpinning Theories===

The FTL drive technology used within the [[Re-imagined Series]] appears to be based on the use of [[Wikipedia:Superstring Theory|Superstring Theory]] and [[Wikipedia:M-Theory|M-Theory]] that essentially enable the "jump drive" systems to "fold" space, reducing the distance between any two points by creating a "corridor" through space that links them together (essentially forming a wormhole, or Einstein-Rosen Bridge). Such "corridors" are allowed by the general theory of relativity; what [[Wikipedia:M-Theory|M-Theory]] does is provide a way to change the topology of space-time dynamically.

The use of such Wormholes is based on the tenet that space is curved. Hence the term "[[Wikipedia:Wormhole|wormhole]]", which arises from the analogy that space can be seen as an apple. A worm can travel from one side of the apple to the other in two ways:
* By crawling over the surface, or
* By burrowing through the apple (creating a "wormhole").
Obviously, the second option is considerably shorter than the first.

===Relativistic Acceleration===
A key point concerning the use of wormholes within the new ''Battlestar Galactica'' is that they do not break the fundamental limiting factor of our universe: the speed of light. Vessels in ''Battlestar Galactica'' do not accelerate to faster-than-light velocities. Rather, they use the wormhole to reduce the distance to their destination, thus giving the ''impression'' of faster-than-light travel.

This is the reason why FTL jumps are virtually instantaneous within episodes (e.g.[[33]]). It also means that the only ''direct'' form of propulsion available for vessels is generated by their [[Sublight Propulsion|sublight drive systems]]<ref>In turn, this is why vessels exiting from a jump are seen to be travelling at the same velocity as when they committed to the jump ([[Miniseries]], "[[33]]," "[[The Hand of God (RDM)|The Hand of God]]," and other episodes).</ref>.

===Feasibility===
While the use of wormholes in this manner is not currently possible, work is progressing on superstring and M-Theory which may make the creation of wormholes possible in the future. The limiting factor is the ability to generate negative energy densities, which are allowed (though severely restricted) by quantum mechanics. As such, the use of such systems again meets one of the stated desires of the the producers of the new Battlestar Galactica: not to rely on the "traditional" trappings of science-fiction that require exotic science and technology. Theoretical physicist [[Wikipedia:Kip Thorne|Kip Thorne]] has carried out extensive research into wormholes, and helped develop a scientifically-consistent means of wormhole travel used by [[Wikipedia:Carl Sagan|Carl Sagan]] in his novel [[Wikipedia:Contact (novel)|"Contact"]] which bears a remarkable similarity to the technology employed within Battlestar Galactica.

==Sublight propulsion==

In the Re-imagined Series, all ships have some manner of sublight flight ability. Sublight propulsion is convenient for intra-solar system travel (such as to or from the planets that comprise the [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)|Twelve Colonies]]), but cannot be used for travel outside of a solar system as the time to arrive at a destination may exceed the fuel supply of the ship or the lifetime of the crew that fly the ship.

'''Lee "Apollo" Adama''' is the eldest son of [[Caroline Adama|Caroline]] and [[William Adama]]. Together with his younger brother, Zak, he was raised largely by his mother on [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Caprica|Caprica]], following his parents' divorce when he was eight.

Despite his father's estrangement from the family, Adama nevertheless inherited his passion for flying - a passion that saw him enrolling in the Colonial military reserves after graduating from college. Following his basic training, he graduated from the military academy third in his class and immediately applied for flight school.

Not to be outdone by his elder brother, Zak Adama applied for military service, a move that eventually brought tragedy to the Adama household.

Accepted into flight school, Adama proved himself a gifted and natural pilot, hampered only by his tendency to over-intellectualise things - a result of his upbringing with his mother, who encouraged him to read widely, and think freely (encouragement that led him to read banned texts by the renegade [[Tom Zarek]] while at college ([[Bastille Day]])).

Graduating from flight school, Adama was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Colonial Reserve, flying the [[Viper (RDM)|Viper]] Mark VII. During this time, he was also introduced to [[Kara Thrace|Kara "Starbuck" Thrace]], a training instructor at flight school, who was also involved with Zak Adama. While Adama was still at flight school, the three frequently spent time together, and Adama and Thrace developed a friendship through Zak Adama ([[Miniseries]]).

=== Brother's Death ===

Tragedy struck some two years prior to the renewed Cylon attack on the Twelve Colonies when Zak Adama, recently graduated from flight school, was killed on a routine Viper mission. At the time, the cause of the accident was put down to pilot error. However, Lee Adama chose to blame the mishap on his father, whom he believed had pushed Zak into applying for military service and for applying for flight school ([[Miniseries]]).

Following Zak's death, Lee Adama became estranged from his father, seeking to build his career well away from any influence exerted by either William Adama or the legendary [[Galactica type battlestar|battlestar]] ''[[Galactica]]'', his father's command. While he was successful in this - gaining promotion to Captain through his own abilities, the decision nevertheless placed a heavy strain on his friendship with Kara Thrace, as she applied for pilot duty aboard ''Galactica''.

Adama spent much time on Caprica and becomes engaged to a woman named [[Gianne]]. She told him she is pregnant with their child, causing him to run from her due to his own family issues. Before he can speak with her again he is assigned to take part in the decommissioning ceremony aboard ''Galactica'' ([[Black Market]]).

Adama is reunited with both his father and Kara Thrace when ''Galactica'' is to be decommissioned as a [[Galactica Museum|living museum and educational center]] of the [[Cylon War]]. As a part of the final ceremonies marking ''Galactica's'' retirement, Lee Adama participates in a final Viper flyby to salute both the ship and her commanding officer - an assignment he undertakes grudgingly, doing little to hide his true feelings from the moment he arrives on the battlestar ([[Miniseries]]). Matters are not helped when he discovers he will fly not in his own [[Viper Mark VII|Mark VII Viper]], but in a newly-restored [[Viper Mark II]] his father had flown during the Cylon War ([[Miniseries]]).

Things worsen after the PR official aboard ''Galactica'', [[Aaron Doral]], sees Captain Adama's presence on ''Galactica'' as a major PR opportunity and has Adama and his father pose for pictures together. Immediately following this, Adama confronts his father over his brother's death, venting two years' worth of anger and belief that his father was responsible for the loss of his brother.

=== Surprise [[Cylon Attack]] ===

Following the decommissioning ceremony, Lee Adama departs ''Galactica'', acting as an unofficial escort for ''[[Colonial Heavy 798]]'', the official transport for Secretary of Education [[Laura Roslin]], who represented President [[Richard Adar|Adar]] at the ceremony. Midway through their return to [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Caprica|Caprica]], Adama and the crew of ''Colonial Heavy 798'' hear of the Cylon attacks on the [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)|Twelve Colonies]], and soon find themselves under direct attack. Adama is able to thwart a missile attack, but his father's old Viper is disabled. Aboard ''Colonial Heavy 798''. Adama becomes one of Laura Roslin's unofficial advisors, aiding her in her self-appointed rescue mission. Adama's annoyance of his father's old Viper comes back to haunt him when [[Sharon Valerii|Boomer]], returning from her unexpected rescue mission on Caprica and disastrous attack on two [[Cylon Raider]]s, notes to him that other Vipers and other modern Colonial spacecraft like his Mark VII were [[Command Navigation Program|easily destroyed]] by Cylon attacks.

Adama again saves ''Colonial Heavy 798'' from a nuclear missile attack with a failed experiment he toyed with in [[War College]], using ''Galactica's'' [[EMP]] coils that were placed on the ship for return to Caprica and the Colonial Fleet - while simultaneously making it look like the ship had been destroyed. He supports Roslin in her rescue efforts, persuading Roslin to lead the [[FTL]]-capable ships to follow ''Galactica'' to [[Ragnar Anchorage]].

As the ranking pilot aboard ''Galactica'', and despite his relative inexperience, Adama finds himself promoted to the position of [[CAG]] by Colonel [[Saul Tigh]].

Apollo leads a Viper squadron in keeping [[Cylon Raider]]s at bay while the civilian [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]] Jumps away from Ragnar Anchorage. His ship is badly damaged midway in the battle and Adama would have been killed by a missile were it not for the lightning-fast and highly-accurate shooting of Starbuck. Starbuck's highly unconventional flying force-fits her fighter and Adama's now-powerless Viper nose-to-nose and flies him back to the battlestar seconds before the port [[flight pod]] closes and ''Galactica'' Jumps away.

Adama's work as Roslin's "special advisor" to further help her understand military matters does not sit well with his father ([[Bastille Day]]).

In the weeks following the Cylon attack, Adama finds time to re-evaluate his relationship with his father - due in no small part to Starbuck's admission of her involvement in Zak's acceptance as a fighter pilot ([[Miniseries]]) and his subsequent death. Father and son grow somewhat closer - even standing shoulder-to-shoulder when Starbuck is MIA ([[You Can't Go Home Again]]). Even so, Adama's former self-doubts and moodiness are not easily overcome and sometimes come back to haunt him when he is tasked to fill a role that others are unsure he can manage. As a Viper pilot, Adama is able to escape from Starbuck's shadow, proving himself capable in unconventional and skilled flying in the [[Battle for the Tylium Asteroid]] ([[The Hand of God (RDM)|The Hand of God]]).

After the tylium asteroid mission, Adama matures enormously, emerging from his shell as a somewhat disillusioned officer and becomes a practical leader who now comfortably straddles his responsibilities as [[CAG]] of ''Galactica'' with his duties as advisor to Roslin. With few issues with either Roslin or his father, Adama demonstrates his maturity particularly well in his handling of security arrangements for the initial meeting of Roslin's [[Quorum of Twelve]] aboard the luxury liner ''[[Cloud Nine]]'' ([[Colonial Day]]).

=== The Inner Conflicts at Kobol ===

Unfortunately, Adama's beliefs in the need for democratic representation and civil government brings him in direct conflict with orders given him by Commander Adama. During the arrest of Laura Roslin following her [[Arrow of Apollo|interference with military operations]], Captain Adama draws his gun on [[Saul Tigh|Colonel Tigh]] in a direct act of mutiny, protesting his father's removal of Roslin from office. Arrested together with Roslin, Adama watches helplessly in [[CIC]] as [[Sharon Valerii (Galactica copy)|Lieutenant Valerii]] shoots his father at point blank range, seriously wounding him ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II]]).

Adama is temporarily furloughed by Colonel Tigh so that he can continue his CAG responsibilities, For a time, Commander Adama's initiative lives on through his son. Young Adama leads a fight with Cylons to buy time for ''Galactica'' to find its proper bearings to the civilian Fleet ([[Scattered]]), He leads a team of [[Marines]] to stop [[Cylon Centurion]]s from reaching [[Aft Damage Control]], saving the ship ([[Valley of Darkness]]). After that, Adama continues his initiative and leads a [[SAR]] mission with two [[Raptors]] to retrieve stranded Colonials on the surface of Kobol ([[Fragged]]).

Adama's desire to let democracy work without overt military action comes to a head once more as he plots with a handful of others to free Roslin and smuggle her away from ''Galactica'' ([[Resistance (episode)|Resistance]]). Before he leaves, he apologizes to his unconscious Commander Adama at his bedside for what he is about to do: Leave with Roslin and a [[Laura Roslin faction|faction]] of ships to search for data on Earth on Kobol. Commander Adama begins to awaken just as young Adama leaves his side.

On the ''[[Astral Queen]]'', Adama is so happy to see Kara Thrace had returned safely from Caprica with the [[Arrow of Apollo]] that he hugs and also impulsively kisses her, pleasantly surprising Thrace. Moments later, as the Caprica copy of Sharon Valerii entered, Adama instantly grabs the known [[Cylon agent]] in anger and would have killed her if Helo and Roslin did not intervene.

Later, with their military protocols and attitudes temporarily relaxed, Adama playfully teases the brooding Kara Thrace by stealing a [[pyramid (RDM)|pyramid]] ball she took as a keepsake from her time with [[Samuel Anders|Anders]] on Caprica. He returns the ball after sensing her depressed mood and tells her that he would be happy to listen to what was on her mind. In the same conversation, he lets it slip out that he loves Thrace. Amused, Thrace cheers up a bit and teases Adama, telling him that there are no take-backs on what he said ([[Home, Part I]]).

Adama and Thrace join President Roslin and her other supporters on their quest to find the [[Tomb of Athena]] on Kobol. When Cylon Centurions ambush the group along an ancient trail, Adama and Thrace work well together in the fight, complementing each other for their fine shooting. During the incident, Adama chases what appeared to be an escaping Valerii, with Thrace calling Adama back in vain. Valerii takes a grenade launcher and aims it in the direction of Adama, but Valerii actually uses the weapon to destroy the last Centurion instead before dropping the weapon to a very surprised Adama.

Adama's reunion with his recovered father on Kobol further mends the wounds between them, both politically and personally. Like Captain Adama had done on the ''Queen'', his father reacts violently to the existence of a another copy of Valerii, leaving Captain Adama in the awkward position of defending her from his father.

In the virtual planetarium created by the Tomb of Athena, Adama is the party member that completes the mystery of interpreting how to use the constellations as viewed from Earth to make a flight path. He spots the [[Wikipedia:Lagoon Nebula|Lagoon Nebula]] in the sky where the Scorpius constellation resided, a celestial body known to the Colonials which gives them a reference point to navigate to Earth. His father confirms Adama's observation, noting that the nebula is far away from their current location at Kobol.

After the Fleet's reunification, Lee Adama is fully restored to flight status and his position as the Commander, Air Group ([[Final Cut]]). Apollo doubts that [[Galen Tyrol|Tyrol]] could successfully complete a prototype fighter later known as the [[Blackbird]], but in the end aids in its first test flight with Starbuck. Around this time, Adama begins to develop a peculiar attraction to Petty Officer 2nd Class [[Anastasia Dualla]] ([[Flight of the Phoenix]]).

===Reassignment===

Apollo is on [[CAP]] when the [[Mercury class battlestar|battlestar]] ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]'' reunites with ''Galactica'': he was one of the first to see it up close. Soon afterwards, friction develops between Adama and the CAG of ''Pegasus'', Captain [[Cole Taylor|Cole "Stinger" Taylor]]. Taylor feels that Adama's pilots were undisciplined and implies that Adama has his position through his father's influence. Taylor recommends that Adama have his pilots focus on keeping a "killcount" of Raiders to encourage competition between his pilots, while Adama stresses that his first priority is to make sure that all of his pilots merely survive another day.

To Adama's shock, Admiral [[Helena Cain]] re-assigns him and Lt. Thrace to ''Pegasus'', under Taylor's command. Cain believes that having Commander Adama's son in the role of CAG was a mistake that had clouded Commander Adama's judgment, as young Adama had been insubordinate and even [[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II|mutinous]] in the past. During a briefing on an upcoming scouting mission against the Cylon fleet following them, Thrace crassly points out that it would never work. She is grounded while Taylor orders Adama to perform the humiliating task of co-piloting a Raptor. However, after the briefing, Adama surreptitiously gives Starbuck a surveillance package and tells her to take the Blackbird to carry out a recon mission on her own. When Commander Adama and Admiral Cain turn on each other, Apollo is away in Taylor's Raptor on his recon mission ([[Pegasus (episode)|Pegasus]]).

As the two battlestar commanders begin sparring with Vipers, ''Pegasus'' orders Taylor to relieve Adama of duty. Taylor pulls his sidearm and takes away Adama's. Now weaponless and with nothing more to do than to ride along, Adama asks permission to head to the rear of the Raptor. While Taylor is busy, Adama secretly sends an encoded [[wireless]] message to Starbuck on her whereabouts with the Blackbird and the secret stealth mission he tasked her with. It happened that Starbuck arrives back in the Fleet's space to see the furious and dangerous game of Viper-tag and replies to Adama, asking what was going on. Starbuck's return on the outer fringes of [[DRADIS]] activate proximity alarms on both ''Pegasus'' and ''Galactica'', whose Vipers unite as a team to intercept what they think is a [[Raider]]. Starbuck manages to identify herself before things get out of hand.

Cain feels that persecuting young Adama for authorizing Thrace's mission would be odd since she was promoting Thrace for her work on her recon mission. Thrace successfully returns Adama to flight status, but demoted to Lieutenant ([[Resurrection Ship, Part II]]).

=== Battle of the Resurrection Ship ===

While Thrace plans an assault on the Resurrection Ship and the two [[Basestar (RDM)|basestar]]s defending it, she tells Adama that his father has ordered her to kill Cain after the battle, and asks Adama to watch her back. Outraged, Adama confronts his father with this, shocked to learn it was President Roslin's idea. Thrace assigns Adama the specific task of disabling the Resurrection Ship's [[FTL]] drive by sneaking up on it in the [[Blackbird]] and destroying it with a precision missile strike. Apollo succeeds, but the Blackbird collides with a [[Raptor]]. Apollo is able to eject, but the Blackbird is destroyed. Alive, but not unscathed, Apollo floats in space watching the battle take place, able to faintly hear Dualla calling for him over [[wireless]]. His damaged [[flight suit]] leaves him in hypoxia, drifting in and out of consciousness, found shortly afterwards by a [[SAR|SAR Raptor]] and resuscitated. Adama becomes despondent and distant from his friends and family after his near-death experience. In the pilot's locker room, Thrace tells Adama "Let's just be glad that we both came back alive, alright?" to which Adama responds "That's just it, Kara, I didn't want to make it back alive" ([[Resurrection Ship, Part II]]).

=== The Black Market ===

Captains Adama and Thrace apprehend Viper saboteur [[Asha Janik]] of the [[Demand Peace]] group after she sabotages Viper ammunition.

After President Roslin is saved from her illness, she begins trying to put down the Fleet's [[Black market (organization)|black market]]. New ''Pegasus'' commander [[Jack Fisk]] is soon murdered, leaving the elder Adama (now an Admiral) to assign his son to investigate. With his association with prostitute [[Shevon]] and her daughter [[Paya]] on ''[[Cloud 9]]'' [[Anastasia Dualla]] asks where the relationship between the two of them was heading. After he hesitates, Dualla takes it to mean it is over. Rushing to help Shevon after her call for help, the captain is ambushed by Phelan's men. Waking up from the attack, he finds the Fisk's murder weapon, and the body of Fisk's murderer.

With some help from [[Tom Zarek]], unwilling to accept the neatly-wrapped up case of Fisk's murderer or the missing Shevon, Adama finds the black market's main ship, the ''[[Prometheus]]''. He finds Paya and other children locked in a storage room. He confronts Phelan, who tells him a black market is necessary, since some supplies may never reach needy people any other way. After Phelan admits running a child prostitution ring, Adama shoots Phelan, and tells his bodyguards that the market can continue operations, unless it keeps holding back essential medicines, begins killing, or returns to child prostitution.

Shevon refuses to see Adama anymore, realizing that Adama has tried to use her and Paya as replacements in his mind for his lost fiancé [[Gianne]] and their unborn child ([[Black Market]]).

===Friendly Fire===

While on leave to ''[[Cloud 9]]'' with [[Anastasia Dualla]], a group of terrorists seize a bar and demand the second copy of [[Sharon Valerii (Caprica copy)|Sharon Valerii]] for execution, while they hold hostage approximately a dozen people, including Dualla, [[Billy Keikeya]], [[Ellen Tigh]] and Adama. The captain secretly sabotages the bar's sensors to appear as if it were leaking atmosphere. The sabotage enables Captain Thrace to gather intelligence on the situation, but her cover is blown, and she is forced to lay down some fire to escape. One shot hits Adama in the chest. Dualla is able to care for Adama long enough for him to survive to ''Galactica's'' sickbay, and later sat at his bedside while he recovers ([[Sacrifice]]).

===A Worthy Command ===

Adama finds himself promoted to Major and assigned to battlestar [[Pegasus (RDM)|''Pegasus]]'' to assess the new commander [[Barry Garner]], the former Chief Engineering Officer of ''Pegasus'', and the bad situation on the ship in general. His relationship with Dualla has become very intimate following his promotion and recovery. Garner finds an instant dislike for Kara Thrace, still assigned as ''Pegasus''' CAG, and orders her sent back to ''Galactica''. Against orders from Admiral Adama, Garner takes ''Pegasus'' in to search for two Raptors missing during a recon mission into a binary star system. His impulsive and unwise efforts result in the battlestar's ambush by three Cylon basestars.

With the FTL drive damaged after successive nuclear missile strikes, Garner relegates command to Major Adama and heads below to help in FTL repairs. After a moment's hesitation (perhaps thinking what his father would do), Adama orders the forward guns to fire on the nearest basestar's central spire, critically damaging the basestar and forcing its retreat, while commanding the battlestar's fighters (led by Starbuck) to guard embattled areas damaged from nuclear pummeling. Adama's attack buys time for Commander Garner to repair the FTL drive, enabling Adama to order ''Pegasus'' to escape back to the Fleet and relative safety.

Admiral Adama debriefs his son, and congratulates him by promoting him to the rank of Commander and giving him command of battlestar ''Pegasus'' ([[The Captain's Hand]]).

Sometime later, Adama wishes Thrace good luck in rescuing [[Anders]] and the rest of the [[Caprica Resistance|resistance group on Caprica]], despite his clear personal feelings towards her. After Thrace and Anders' return, Adama attempts to introduce himself politely, but is hampered by the couple's amorous and highly drunken behavior. When Thrace gives a rude comment, Adama bows out the area, beginning a quiet but palpable rift in their friendship. This strain would grow worse on the evening of the founding of [[New Caprica]]. After the party on the surface, Lee and Kara slept together after Dee and Anders had retired. Proclaiming his love for her, she reciprocated and they fell asleep in one anothers arms. The next morning he awoke to find Starbuck gone. When he reached the settlement he was informed by his father that Kara and Anders had gotten married earlier in the morning ([[Unfinished Business]]).

Just over a year later, commanding a half-capacity, nearly unneeded battlestar orbiting [[New Caprica]], Commander Lee Adama gained a considerable amount of weight in the intervening year. He is in the process of deciding whether or not to supply Kara Thrace with [[antibiotics]] for Anders (now her husband, suffering from pneumonia) when Dualla (now Lieutenant, ''Pegasus'' [[CIC]] and wife of Lee Adama) spots a massive Cylon fleet jumping into the nebula. Adama and his father briefly discuss their course of action; young Adama argues for an immediate emergency jump. Reluctantly, the Admiral ordered the orbiting remains of the Fleet, whose population consists of around two thousand citizens, to escape, leaving New Caprica to the Cylons, for the time being ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]).

=== Battle of New Caprica and Destruction of ''Pegasus'' ===

Commander Adama and his father get into a disagreement over whether or not a rescue mission should be mounted to New Caprica. Lee believes that it would end with the destruction of both ''Galactica'' and ''Pegasus'', leaving the pitiful remnants of the Fleet at the mercy of the Cylons. Lee also objects to the Admiral's decision to reinstate [[Sharon Agathon]] as a Colonial Fleet officer to act as liaison between the New Caprica resistance and ''Galactica''. These disagreements lead to heated arguments between the two, prompting Admiral Adama to make a comment about Lee's weight by calling him a "fatass" and saying he has grown "soft" in the past year ([[Occupation]], [[Precipice]]). Due to his son's objections, Admiral Adama decides to take ''Galactica'' to rescue the people on New Caprica alone. He gives his son orders to wait 18 hours for his return; if he does not return by then, Lee is to resume the search for Earth with what's left of the civilian fleet ([[Exodus, Part I]]).

Lee is certain that the elder Adama will not return, and he is conflicted between his duty to protect the civilians and his duty to his father. His wife's attempt at reassurance only serve to heighten his guilt. Leaving his ship's Vipers behind to protect the civilians, the Commander takes ''Pegasus'' to assist ''Galactica'', fully aware that he may very well be on a suicide mission. He joins the [[Battle of New Caprica]] just in time, saving his father's ship from certain destruction at the hands of four Cylon basestars; ''Pegasus'' immediately destroys one basestar with its forward guns. Lee then uses ''Pegasus'' to draw fire, giving ''Galactica'' time to escape. This action damages ''Pegasus'' beyond repair. Per his plan, Adama orders the crew to evacuate and sets the ship's batteries to be set on autofire; he is the last person to leave the CIC, thanking the ship as he departs. The small crew evacuates on Raptors and executes FTL jumps just as ''Pegasus'' rams a basestar, destroying itself in the process. One of its flight pods tumbles away from the force of the explosion and collides with another basestar in a final act of defiance ([[Exodus, Part II]]).

The Commander and his crew transfer to the last remaining battlestar, ''Galactica''. Still a Commander three days later, Lee reports directly to his father regarding important affairs within the Fleet, including the mysterious disappearances of 13 people confirmed to have survived the Exodus from New Caprica. Dissatisfied with his round appearance, he had also taken up a rigid exercise regimen and starts losing weight rapidly ([[Collaborators]]).

As of the episode "[[Torn]]", he has returned to the role of Galactica's CAG, with the rank of Major. When a dying basestar is discovered in the [[Lion's Head Nebula]], Adama leads a team of marines on it and captures several humanoid Cylons. When Doctor [[Cottle]] discovers that they are infected with a virus lethal to the Cylons, Adama advocates to use the prisoners as biological weapons in an attempt to exterminate the Cylons. The plan is approved but ultimately fails due to the intervention of [[Karl Agathon]] ([[A Measure of Salvation]]).

The [[CAG]] aboard battlestar ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]'' just before her scheduled decommissioning and conversion into a [[Galactica Museum|museum]], '''Jackson "Ripper" Spencer''' is a liked and respected officer who mixes easily with his pilots. Off-duty he enjoys joining his pilots in a card game, while on-duty he takes his work very seriously and treats his pilots with a firm but fair hand.

During the decommissioning ceremonies for ''Galactica'', Spencer plays second fiddle to Captain [[Lee Adama]], allowing the younger man to fly the newly-restored [[Viper (RDM)|Viper]] Mark II [[Viper 7242|N7242C]] - the vehicle flown by one Lieutenant [[William Adama]] during the [[Cylon War]], to honor ''Galactica's'' outgoing Commander and Lee Adama's father.

Following the decommissioning ceremony, Spencer leads his squadron - the last fully-operational squadron on ''Galactica'' - to [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Caprica|Caprica]], presumably for later redeployment in the [[Colonial Fleet (RDM)|Colonial Fleet]]. While en route, the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylons]] launch their surprise attack on the [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)|Twelve Colonies]].

Alerted to the attack by ''Galactica'', Spencer locates two Cylon [[Raider]] fighters and, after ordering the accompanying [[Raptor]] reconnaissance vehicle away from the combat zone, orders his squadron to [[weapons free]] to intercept and destroy the Raiders. However, as the targets approach, all Vipers in Spencer's squadron suffer simultaneous failures in their flight control, communications and weapons systems as the Cylons infiltrate their ship computer using the backdoor programming of the [[Command Navigation Program]].

Unable to maneuver or fire, the entire squadron is quickly destroyed by the two Raiders, with Spencer among the first to be killed.

With his death, Spencer is replaced by Captain [[Lee Adama]] as ''Galactica's'' [[Commander Air Group|CAG]].

She is selected as a candidate pilot ("[[nugget]]") for [[Viper (RDM)|Viper]] training under the command of Lieutenant [[Kara Thrace|Kara "Starbuck" Thrace]] ([[Act of Contrition]]). While she is a new pilot, she has a taste for fighting, and is often on the front lines when ''[[Galactica]]'' engages [[Cylon]] forces. She becomes ''Galactica''' [[CAG]] during the colonization and occupation period of [[New Caprica]].

Katraine later dies after receiving cumulatively fatal radiation exposure while escorting civilian ships through a star cluster to a planet with a food source ([[The Passage]]).

== Biography ==

Katraine's real name is actually Sasha. She took the name "Louanne Katraine" from a girl who died two days before [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies|the attack]]. She was a drug runner in the [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)|Twelve Colonies]] working for a person named [[Enzo]] ([[The Passage]]).

Katraine is selected from relative obscurity to become one of ''[[Galactica]]'''s first intake of trainee pilots after 13 experienced pilots were killed in a freak accident ([[Act of Contrition]]).

Described as a "boonie jumper", Katraine is placed under the instruction of [[Kara Thrace]], alongside nugget pilots [[Brendan Constanza]] and [[Perry]], with whom she forms a friendship.

Thrown in at the deep end - flying [[Viper (RDM)|Vipers]] on their very first day of training, none of the nuggets perform particularly well - Kat in particular fails to make a [[combat landing]] on ''Galactica''. Thrace washes out the entire group of candidates until Commander [[William Adama]] later forces Thrace to reinstate them.

Katraine's training continues until she is selected to fly with [[Lee Adama]] during a raid to secure a [[tylium]] mine from the Cylons ([[The Hand of God (RDM)|The Hand of God]]). Her fellow nuggets [[Perry]] and [[Stepchild]] are killed in this action, but she and [[Brendan Constanza|Hot Dog]] survive and are greeted as heroes on their return to ''Galactica''.

Kat participates in the defense of ''Galactica'' when the battlestar becomes separated from [[The Fleet (RDM)|the Fleet]], and has to face down a Cylon [[Basestar (RDM)|basestar]] in order to relocate it ([[Scattered]]).

After Lee Adama's defection to the [[Laura Roslin faction]], his replacement, the newly promoted Captain [[George Birch]] negligently endangers Katraine during a training exercise. She is almost killed when Birch incorrectly directs her to attack an asteroid target as [[Brendan Constanza|Hot Dog]] fires a missile at the target. Katraine's improving piloting skills save her from a dangerous collision with debris ([[Home, Part I]]).

Kat is later promoted from cadet to the rank of Lieutenant. She becomes increasingly exhausted with the mounting pressures of service in the Fleet with long hours, constant danger, and no possiblity of reinforcement. While trying to combat her fatigue, Kat becomes dependent on [[stims]], of which the effects of their overuse make her emotionally unstable. She "moons" a documentary crew for her "buddies" on [[Freighter 212]], berates Chief [[Galen Tyrol|Tyrol]] for mechanical failures that are beyond his control, and later crashes her Viper into the [[landing bay]], totalling the vehicle ([[Final Cut]], [[Flight of the Phoenix]]). She is pulled from flight status for some time, but is reinstated by the time that the advanced battlestar ''Pegasus'' joins the Fleet , when she flies wingman to [[Lee Adama|Apollo]] on [[CAP]] when first contact is made with ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]''.

In the wake of Admiral Cain's integration of ''Galactica'' and ''Pegasus''' officers, Kat appears to have been made the acting-CAG of ''Galactica'' flight team. With Starbuck and Apollo both transferred to ''Pegasus'' and the failure of Cpt. [[George Birch]] as [[CAG]] during Lee Adama's absence, Katraine appears to be the most likely choice to fill the command vacuum. She is flight leader of the Viper wing that stands off against the ''Pegasus'' Vipers. In spite of making repeated requests for firing clearance, she manages to keep the situation from degenerating into a fire fight, and avoids several collision attempts in the fighters' deadly "chicken" game, each attempting to force the other side to fire first ([[Resurrection Ship, Part I]]).

On day 189 of the human exodus, Kat is assigned CAP with [[Kara Thrace|Starbuck]]. Kat's maturity and past insensitivity show growth when Starbuck orders her to stop her small talk about Starbuck's off-hours behavior, which Kat does so without skipping a beat and returns to business by requesting permission to do a weapons check. As Kat test-fires her Viper's guns, an ammo misfire destroys Kat's port gun and sends debris at Starbuck's Viper, cracking her cockpit window. The two declare an emergency and safely return to ''Galactica.'' The cause of the malfunction was soon determined to be sabotage later blamed on a civilian ammunition worker that is part of the "[[Demand Peace]]" movement ([[Epiphanies]]).

Katraine is more than personally upset with Starbuck's apparent behavior issues and doesn't really care. While Kat obviously admires Kara Thrace, she tires quickly of Starbuck's drinking and bragging, which is affecting her work, and in turn affecting the pilots, especially the [[nugget]]s. Fed up with Starbuck's lording over the "Top Gun" beer stein as well as the rampaging Raider ace known as "[[Scar (Raider)|Scar]]," Kat makes a bet with Starbuck on who will destroy the morale-sucking Raider first.

Kat manages pilot combat reviews, having become a highly skilled tactical pilot herself. She grimaces at Starbuck's inefficiencies and chimes in often to correct or chide Starbuck, much to Thrace's chagrin. Things come to a head in their rivalry when Kat openly criticizes Starbuck for substituting [[Jo-Jo]] for patrol rather than flying herself (she awoke that morning hungover and unable to fly). Jo-Jo and his wingman are both killed, and Kat is incensed. But instead of Starbuck delivering the first punch, it's Kat that delivers it. Their fight is interrupted by Captain [[Lee Adama|Adama]], who orders them on patrol near the [[Big Spud]]. Kat and Starbuck find Scar, and Starbuck's Viper is damaged in a near-successful ambush. The consummate wingman, Kat continually speaks to Starbuck to get a bearing, although Starbuck resists out of pride rather than working jointly to destroy Scar. When Starbuck realizes that because of [[Samuel Anders]] she doesn't want to die in order to take Scar with her, she guides Kat in to her position, where Kat delivers the killing blow to Scar.

Kat chides Starbuck once more in the pilot's recreation room as she holds the Top Gun mug. Starbuck pours champagne in the mug and tells Kat, "You've earned it." Kat's slight smile in response is not only that of smugness, but also that of honor - for Starbuck to tell her that she was (at least for the time being) the best - is pleasing as a master would compliment a student ([[Scar]]). Kat's smugness is short-lived, as Starbuck offers a toast to all the pilots who died during their flight from the colonies. Overwhelmed with the memory of lost comrades, Kat nearly bursts into tears.

By the time of the Cylon invasion of [[New Caprica]], with Lee Adama in command of ''Pegasus'' and Kara Thrace having left the fleet and settled planetside, Katraine has been promoted to ''Galactica'''s [[CAG]] ([[Exodus, Part I]]). During the [[Battle of New Caprica]], she leads a group of Vipers escorting decoy [[Raptor]]s, and presumably assists in the defense of ''Galactica'' in the following space battle ([[Exodus, Part II]]). Following the destruction of ''Pegasus'', Lee Adama returns to ''Galactica'' and replaces Katraine as the CAG, who in turn becomes the leader of [[Blue Squadron (RDM)|Blue Squadron]] ([[Torn]]).

During a food shortage throughout the fleet, ''Galactica'''s pilots are tasked with safely guiding the civilian ships through a highly radioactive star cluster to a food source on the other side. During this time Katraine encounteres [[Enzo]], who survived the attack and calls her by her real name, Sasha. Enzo confronts Katraine and threatens to reveal Kat's past to others unless she helps him. Thrace observes the argument and later confronts Enzo about it, who in turn reveals Katraine's secret to Thrace. Katraine confirms it to Thrace, who is angered over the secret, even suggesting that Kat could have possibly unknowingly aiding the Cylons in their infiltration of Caprica. Katraine begs Thrace not to tell Admiral Adama, saying that she wants to tell him herself.

Before the final trip through the passage, Katraine, who had already received a deadly dose of radiation on earlier trips, switches radiation badges with Helo. During the final trip, she loses track of the ''[[Faru Sadin]]'', but remains in the passage until she finds the vessel and joins the rest of the Fleet on the other side. Upon landing, Katraine is celebrated as a hero, but then succumbs to radiation poisoning, collapsing on the flight deck.

On her deathbed, Katraine receives an apology from Thrace, as well as an overdose of [[sleeping pills]] that would allow her to pass away painlessly. Admiral Adama also visits Katraine, giving her an honorary promotion to CAG, and then tells her how the situation reminds him of when his son, [[Zak Adama|Zak]], was born. Kat tries telling him about her past, but he cuts her off saying it doesn't matter. After Katraine's death, Thrace places a photo of her on the [[memorial hallway|wall of rememberance]], and Admiral Adama makes her posthumous promotion official by switching her name on the pilot roster with Lee Adama's ([[The Passage]]).

*Katraine's assumed first name, Louanne, was revealed in the episode "[[Final Cut]]" during her interview with [[D'anna Biers]], although it is spelled as "Louann" in the closing credits (as it did before in "[[Home, Part I]]"). The spelling is corrected from "[[Resurrection Ship, Part I]]" on out.
*It was initially assumed that some of Kat's family may have survived the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies]], as implied when Kat shouted "Hi, Mom!" while waving into the camera in "[[Final Cut]]". However, given what was revealed in "[[The Passage]]", it may have been ficticious.
*In the DVD commentary for "[[Act of Contrition]]", David Eick and Ron D. Moore elaborate on the increased role of the nugget pilots as the series progressed:

:Eick: This young actress playing Kat has proven to be--and there's Bodie Olmos, Eddie's son, in the center there who's Hot Dog, he's also become a recurring character.
