Louanne "Kat" Katraine was the assumed name of a young woman named Sasha, a drug runner on Caprica with flying experience (The Passage). She is selected as a candidate pilot ("nugget") for Viper training under the command of Lieutenant Kara "Starbuck" Thrace (Act of Contrition). While she is a new pilot, she has a taste for fighting, and is often on the front lines when Galactica engages Cylon forces. She becomes Galactica&#39; CAG during the colonization and occupation period of New Caprica.

Katraine later dies after receiving cumulatively fatal radiation exposure while escorting civilian ships through a star cluster to a planet with a food source (The Passage).

Biography
Katraine's real name is actually Sasha. She took the name "Louanne Katraine" from a girl who died two days before the attack. She was a drug runner in the Twelve Colonies working for a person named Enzo (The Passage).

Katraine is selected from relative obscurity to become one of Galacticas first intake of trainee pilots after 13 experienced pilots were killed in a freak accident (Act of Contrition).

Described as a "boonie jumper", Katraine is placed under the instruction of Kara Thrace, alongside nugget pilots Brendan Costanza and Perry, with whom she forms a friendship.

Thrown in at the deep end - flying Vipers on their very first day of training, none of the nuggets perform particularly well - Kat in particular fails to make a combat landing on Galactica. Thrace washes out the entire group of candidates until Commander William Adama later forces Thrace to reinstate them.

Katraine's training continues until she is selected to fly with Lee Adama during a raid to secure a tylium mine from the Cylons (The Hand of God). Her fellow nuggets Perry and Stepchild are killed in this action, but she and Hot Dog survive and are greeted as heroes on their return to Galactica.

Kat participates in the defense of Galactica when the battlestar becomes separated from the Fleet, and has to face down a Cylon basestar in order to relocate it (Scattered).

After Lee Adama's defection to the Laura Roslin faction, his replacement, the newly promoted Captain George Birch negligently endangers Katraine during a training exercise. She is almost killed when Birch incorrectly directs her to attack an asteroid target as Hot Dog fires a missile at the target. Katraine's improving piloting skills save her from a dangerous collision with debris (Home, Part I).

Kat is later promoted from cadet to the rank of Lieutenant. She becomes increasingly exhausted with the mounting pressures of service in the Fleet with long hours, constant danger, and no possiblity of reinforcement. While trying to combat her fatigue, Kat becomes dependent on stims, of which the effects of their overuse make her emotionally unstable. She "moons" a documentary crew for her "buddies" on Freighter 212, berates Chief Tyrol for mechanical failures that are beyond his control, and later crashes her Viper into the landing bay, totalling the vehicle (Final Cut, Flight of the Phoenix). She is pulled from flight status for some time, but is reinstated by the time that the advanced battlestar Pegasus joins the Fleet , when she flies wingman to Apollo on CAP when first contact is made with Pegasus.

In the wake of Admiral Cain's integration of Galactica and Pegasus officers, Kat appears to have been made the acting-CAG of Galactica flight team. With Starbuck and Apollo both transferred to Pegasus and the failure of Cpt. George Birch as CAG during Lee Adama's absence, Katraine appears to be the most likely choice to fill the command vacuum. She is flight leader of the Viper wing that stands off against the Pegasus Vipers. In spite of making repeated requests for firing clearance, she manages to keep the situation from degenerating into a fire fight, and avoids several collision attempts in the fighters' deadly "chicken" game, each attempting to force the other side to fire first (Resurrection Ship, Part I).

On day 189 of the human exodus, Kat is assigned CAP with Starbuck. Kat's maturity and past insensitivity show growth when Starbuck orders her to stop her small talk about Starbuck's off-hours behavior, which Kat does so without skipping a beat and returns to business by requesting permission to do a weapons check. As Kat test-fires her Viper's guns, an ammo misfire destroys Kat's port gun and sends debris at Starbuck's Viper, cracking her cockpit window. The two declare an emergency and safely return to Galactica. The cause of the malfunction was soon determined to be sabotage later blamed on a civilian ammunition worker that is part of the "Demand Peace" movement (Epiphanies).

Katraine is more than personally upset with Starbuck's apparent behavior issues and doesn't really care. While Kat obviously admires Kara Thrace, she tires quickly of Starbuck's drinking and bragging, which is affecting her work, and in turn affecting the pilots, especially the nuggets. Fed up with Starbuck's lording over the "Top Gun" beer stein as well as the rampaging Raider ace known as "Scar," Kat makes a bet with Starbuck on who will destroy the morale-sucking Raider first.

Kat manages pilot combat reviews, having become a highly skilled tactical pilot herself. She grimaces at Starbuck's inefficiencies and chimes in often to correct or chide Starbuck, much to Thrace's chagrin. Things come to a head in their rivalry when Kat openly criticizes Starbuck for substituting Jo-Jo for patrol rather than flying herself (she awoke that morning hungover and unable to fly). Jo-Jo and his wingman are both killed, and Kat is incensed. But instead of Starbuck delivering the first punch, it's Kat that delivers it. Their fight is interrupted by Captain Adama, who orders them on patrol near the Big Spud. Kat and Starbuck find Scar, and Starbuck's Viper is damaged in a near-successful ambush. The consummate wingman, Kat continually speaks to Starbuck to get a bearing, although Starbuck resists out of pride rather than working jointly to destroy Scar. When Starbuck realizes that because of Samuel Anders she doesn't want to die in order to take Scar with her, she guides Kat in to her position, where Kat delivers the killing blow to Scar.

Kat chides Starbuck once more in the pilot's recreation room as she holds the Top Gun mug. Starbuck pours champagne in the mug and tells Kat, "You've earned it." Kat's slight smile in response is not only that of smugness, but also that of honor - for Starbuck to tell her that she was (at least for the time being) the best - is pleasing as a master would compliment a student (Scar). Kat's smugness is short-lived, as Starbuck offers a toast to all the pilots who died during their flight from the colonies. Overwhelmed with the memory of lost comrades, Kat nearly bursts into tears.

By the time of the Cylon invasion of New Caprica, with Lee Adama in command of Pegasus and Kara Thrace having left the fleet and settled planetside, Katraine has been promoted to Galacticas CAG (Exodus, Part I). During the Battle of New Caprica, she leads a group of Vipers escorting decoy Raptors, and presumably assists in the defense of Galactica in the following space battle (Exodus, Part II). Following the destruction of Pegasus, Lee Adama returns to Galactica and replaces Katraine as the CAG, who in turn becomes a squadron leader ("Torn", "The Passage").

During a food shortage throughout the fleet, Galacticas pilots are tasked with safely guiding the civilian ships through a highly radioactive star cluster to a food source on the other side. During this time Katraine encounteres Enzo, who survived the attack and calls her by her real name, Sasha. Enzo confronts Katraine and threatens to reveal Kat's past to others unless she helps him. Thrace observes the argument and later confronts Enzo about it, who in turn reveals Katraine's secret to Thrace. Katraine confirms it to Thrace, who is angered over the secret, even suggesting that Kat could have possibly unknowingly aiding the Cylons in their infiltration of Caprica. Katraine begs Thrace not to tell Admiral Adama, saying that she wants to tell him herself.

Before the final trip through the passage, Katraine, who had already received a deadly dose of radiation on earlier trips, switches radiation badges with Helo. During the final trip, she loses track of the Faru Sadin, but remains in the passage until she finds the vessel and joins the rest of the Fleet on the other side. Upon landing, Katraine is celebrated as a hero, but then succumbs to radiation poisoning and collapses on the flight deck.

On her deathbed, Katraine summons Thrace for a final reconciliation, and receives from Thrace an apology and a supply of sleeping pills, enough for an overdose that would allow her to die painlessly. Admiral Adama also comes to visit Katraine and informs her of her promotion to CAG again. Kat tries telling him the truth about her past, but he cuts her off, saying he doesn't need to know any more than what she did while serving under him. He pulls up a chair to sit watch over her, and comforts her with how the sickbay reminds him of when his son, Zak, was born, and how he and Carolanne had wanted a girl. After Katraine's death, Admiral Adama symbolically replaces Lee Adama's name with hers in the pilot roster board's CAG slot while the pilots observe in silence. Thrace goes to the wall of remembrance and adds Katraine's photo (The Passage).

Notes
*Katraine's assumed first name, Louanne, was revealed in the episode "Final Cut" during her interview with D'Anna Biers, although it is spelled as "Louann" in the closing credits (as it did before in "Home, Part I"). The spelling is corrected from "Resurrection Ship, Part I" on out.
*It was initially assumed that some of Kat's family may have survived the Fall of the Twelve Colonies, as implied when Kat shouted "Hi, Mom!" while waving into the camera in "Final Cut". However, given what was revealed in "The Passage", it may have been fictitious.
*is featured in the XBOX 360 Battlestar Galactica game as one of the pilots the player competes with to shoot down the most ships and become Galactica's new top gun.
*In the DVD commentary for "Act of Contrition", David Eick and Ron D. Moore elaborate on the increased role of the nugget pilots as the series progressed:

:Eick: This young actress playing Kat has proven to be--and there's Bodie Olmos, Eddie's son, in the center there who's Hot Dog, he's also become a recurring character.
:RDM: Well those three in the front, Chuckles, Hot Dog, and Kat, they all became "pilots" to us. And I don't think we really had any expectation of that. The idea was we were going to do "the nuggets", "the new pilots", was just going to be its own kind of story, and maybe you might see one of these guys again later. And what started happening is the writers just started putting them in, like almost every scene that we dealt with the pilots (of Galactica) so these became our "recognizable faces".
:Eick: Kat is quite fine. She's someone we're now talking about, and have already, built into a much more prominent character. She's just a really, really talented actor, and she's someone who in a very different way than Katee (Starbuck), just exemplifies that sort of masculine fortitude, despite being a woman, that is required to be a pilot like this. In one of the upcoming episodes (Scar), we're actually going to deal with the tension between Kara Thrace and Kat.
:RDM: Yeah, what happens when your protege starts outdistancing you. What happens when you train this young pilot, and it's great that she's a hot shot and all that, and then wait a minute, what if she starts being better than you?
Lt. Brendan "Hot Dog" Costanza is a cocksure pilot, originally washed out of Colonial flight school, but selected as a candidate pilot (nugget) for Viper training under the command of Kara Thrace.

Biography
Costanza is a Fleet Academy washout, surviving the Cylon Holocaust. He is recruited as a Viper pilot trainee after an accident kills 13 Viper pilots. Initially washed out from Viper training under Lieutenant Thrace, Costanza is reinstated after Commander Adama ordered his and other nuggets' return to flight training status.

After the reinstatement, Costanza demonstrates an aptitude for being inventive and an overenthusiastic tendency for taking initiative. He acts more experienced than he really is and tries to be top dog. Costanza demonstrates this when a group of eight Cylon Raiders encounter Starbuck, Hot Dog and his fellow nuggets on a training flight. Instead of obeying Starbuck's orders by returning to Galactica at full throttle, Hot Dog returns to assist Thrace as a wingman. This act almost gets the young, inexperienced pilot killed, but buys Starbuck time to dispatch all eight Raiders in a situation where, if not for Hot Dog's distraction of the collective enemy fighter group, Starbuck's odds of survival would be considerably less (Act of Contrition).

Costanza ejects from his severely damaged Viper and is subsequently rescued by a Raptor piloted by Sharon Valerii and Crashdown, after which he vomits on the Raptor's deck. A short time later, after briefing Commander Adama, Hot Dog is led to sickbay, but not before Captain Lee Adama removes his own Viper flight wings from his uniform and pins them on Hotdog for his bravery (You Can't Go Home Again).

Costanza develops a bond with Louanne Katraine and Chuckles, members of his training group (Act of Contrition).

Hot Dog takes part in the attack on a Cylon tylium refinery as part of Strike Force One. It appears he assumes command of the group with the death of their flight leader, Fireball (The Hand of God)

He helps defending Galactica while the battlestar performs lengthy calculations to locate its civilian Fleet (Scattered). After returning to Galactica, Hot Dog survives a brief run in with a Cylon Centurion that boards the ship. With shipboard systems unreliable, Apollo orders Hot Dog to personally report the situation to CIC (Valley of Darkness).

While flying CAP, Colonel Tigh orders Hot Dog to intercept a Raptor carrying the escaping President Laura Roslin. After Apollo continues their escape after Hot Dog fires a warning shot across his bow, Tigh orders Hot Dog to stand down rather than shoot Apollo's Raptor down (Resistance).

Costanza is one of the pilots, along with Apollo and Starbuck, who are scrambled to intercept two Cylon raiders on a presumed reconnaissance mission to find Galactica. The Raiders are dispatched with ease, though their real mission was to relay a transmission from a Cylon agent on board Galactica to Caprica (Final Cut).

Costanza is with Apollo and Starbuck practicing handgun marksmanship on the firing range when a Cylon computer virus nearly suffocates the trio. Later, Hot Dog is scrambled with the rest of Galacticas air group to face a massive formation of Cylon forces. With the timely intervention of Caprica-Sharon, the enemy fighters are disabled and Hot Dog joyfully takes part in the Great Cylon Turkey Shoot (Flight of the Phoenix).

Costanza is among the pilots assigned to patrol the asteroid field during weeks-long mining operations. He survives the operation, though several of his fellow pilots do not (Scar).

Hot Dog leads Blue Squadron in the attack on the shipyard on New Caprica, when he and his wingman Redwing provide cover fire for resistance members attempting to enter the facility (Exodus, Part II).

Costanza is the one that suggests "Athena" as a callsign for Sharon Agathon. He appears to be one of Major Adama's senior pilots (Torn) and is a member of the boarding party sent to investigate the dying Cylon basestar found in the Lion's Head Nebula (A Measure of Salvation).

At a mission briefing he complains about a rash in his pubic region. Helo teases him about and says that he hopes the girl was worth it, moving to the next seat (A Day in the Life).

Costanza is assigned to fly as Starbuck's wingman during a routine CAP while the fleet undergoes refueling operations near a gas giant. It is on one of these CAPs Starbuck believes to have made visual contact with a Cylon ship, though Costanza and Starbuck's gun camera see nothing (Maelstrom).

Two weeks after Kara Thrace's death, Costanza is present during the daily mission brief conducted by Lee Adama immediately prior to the major being taken off flight status and replaced with Karl Agathon as CAG (The Son Also Rises).

During the opening days of Baltar's trial, Costanza is playing a game of Pyramid in Joe's bar with the nuggets Diana Seelix and Samuel Anders (Crossroads, Part I).

Notes
*Kat is promoted to lieutenant after passing through Viper training, so presumably Hot Dog has also been promoted to lieutenant by the episode "Final Cut", but this has not been confirmed in an aired episode as yet. As seen in the episode "Scar" newly graduated cadets actually hold the rank of ensign, and presumably get promoted over time. However, Kat had been confirmed as a lieutenant at that time and Hot Dog has been a pilot as just as long as her (they were in the first batch of nuggets), so he is probably a lieutenant as well.
*Actor Bodie Olmos is the youngest son of Edward James Olmos (Admiral William Adama) and the grandson of actor/singer Howard Keel.

*During the initial briefing with Starbuck, Hotdog can be seen to be flipping his pen around his fingers in a similar fashion to "Iceman" from the movie "Top Gun" (Act of Contrition).
*His last name is a reference to Seinfeld character George Costanza.citation needed
*Hotdog is featured in the XBOX 360 Battlestar Galactica game as one of the pilots the player competes with to shoot down the most ships and become Galactica's new top gun.

A series bible is a guidebook written by the creator(s) of a TV show so that all writers will know the general outline of the show; it contains the backstories of the characters and outlines the in-series universe. Typically, it contains information that might not actually be revealed to the audience until later, but is known to the writers from the start, so they won't make any conflicting new stories. Additionally, writers of some film series use a similar bible.

The Re-Imagined Series bible
The re-imagined Battlestar Galactica series bible was written by Ron D. Moore after the Miniseries during a hiatus and was completed on 17 December 2003 before production on the regular series began. It has not been released in its entirety, nor will it probably, as it still contains much information not yet revealed on screen. However, the series bible is not necessarily definitive, as sometimes the writing team may decide something different must be done in a script than was originally outlined. Still, so long as nothing new is made that conflicts with the bible, it contains the real back stories for the characters and basic plot outline for the future of the show.

For example, Moore has said in his Season 1 podcast that, according to the series bible, Starbuck used to be a pyramid player, intending to play professionally, but sustained a knee injury and had to drop out and find a new direction for her life. Several episodes later, in "Resistance" Starbuck states on screen that she used to play pyramid but a knee injury forced her to stop.

Moore often refers to information from the series bible in the podcasts (usually, things he wanted to put on screen but could not). Another example is Colonel Saul Tigh; Moore has stated that his series bible entry says, that he was a young petty officer not unlike Chief Tyrol when his ship, the Brenik, was boarded during the Cylon War and the fighting with Centurions was some of the bloodiest of the war, devolving into hand to hand combat.

Later, Tigh was stationed on another ship which was also lost, and then he was dragooned into officer school to become a Viper pilot when Colonial numbers started running low. The series bible also fully describes his poor relationship with his wife, Ellen. Originally, all the viewers would ever see of this relationship was that it (combined with Tigh's horrific war experience) had driven Tigh to alcoholism as seen in the beginning of the Miniseries, also when Tigh is burning her face out of a photo. Originally, this was supposed to be all viewers actually saw of Ellen Tigh. However, other writers read the full description of her in the series bible, and subsequently thought that she wouldd make a good character, and thus "resurrected" her in "Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down".

Moore previously indicated considering releasing the series bible, as "a lot of the background information on the characters is starting to come out in both Seasons One and Two, so there might come a point where I'd let the bible be put out there for public consumption." As of the closing of season three, this has not come to pass.

Several lines from the series bible are briefly shown during Battlestar Galactica: The Lowdown. The images show that the series bible has sections on the Religion and the Culture and Society of the Colonials.
Sky One Biographies
The following are biographical information from Sky One's website which was later removed. It has now become apparent that they were based on information from the show's series bible.

The first evidence of this was that President Adar's first name is given as "Richard" in Laura Roslin's biography, obviously long before Adar's first name was mentioned on screen. Further background information confirmed by the show is detailed below each character.

William Adama
:William Adama was born on the colony of Caprica, in a small coastal community.

:His mother Evelyn was an accountant and his father, Joseph, was an attorney who specialised in criminal defence and civil liberties.

:At the age of 16 his parents divorced and he applied to the Colonial Fleet Academy. That same year, the Cylon War broke out. Adama's training accelerated along with all other midshipmen.

:After 3 years Adama was commissioned to work as a flight pilot; he gained a further two years of training before Adama joined his first squadron. He was a gifted, natural pilot and he shot down a Cylon fighter in his first mission.

:After the war was over, Adama was mustered out of the service along with millions of other colonials as part of demobilization process. He went home to Caprica, married his high school sweetheart and started life over.

:Adama struggled to find work as a pilot and so signed up as a deck hand in the merchant fleet. This experience would later give him an uncommon insight into the lives and struggles of the enlisted ranks aboard Galactica.

:Adama later had two sons, Lee and Zak. But over the years his exploration aboard ships would see Adama spending less time with his sons. He always tried to instill duty and admiration for military services. But was still surprised to learn that both his sons decided to enter the Fleet and become pilots.

:When Zak died during a training flight. Lee confronted his father and laid blame for his younger brother's death.

The description of William Adama's mother as an accountant named Evelyn was later confirmed in the Season 3 episode "Hero". His service in the Colonial Fleet also fits with the details established in Adama's dossier (shown in "Hero") and the Razor Flashbacks.

Laura Roslin
According to Sky One, Roslin was born in Caprica City. Her father and two sisters were killed by a drunk driver and she came to the attention of Richard Adar after she earned a Teacher of the Year award.

Here is Sky One's summary of Roslin:

:Laura Roslin was born in the bustling urban environment of Caprica City. Both her parents, Judith and Edward, were teachers in the public school system and her two older sisters also went into teaching.

:Tragically at the age of fifteen, both her sisters and her father were killed by a drunk driver. Her mother never recovered from the shock and Laura would spend the next twenty years caring for her mother. Laura then went into teaching and soon established herself in one of the large public schools in the city.

:Her success was acknowledged and she earned a Teacher of the Year award. In doing so, she came to the attention of Richard Adar, Mayor of Caprica City, who wanted her to help him run for Governor. Despite having no political experience, Adar persuaded her to join.

:Laura entered the harsh world of politics. Caprica City was crime-ridden and its public schools were a disaster. Adar and Laura brought the city back to its full potential.

:Uncomfortable with the spotlight, Laura let others take the credit for her work. But the Mayor knew what she had accomplished, and he never forgot.

:Her personal life was solitary; she remained a quiet, efficient public servant who ran her department fairly. This won her admiration across the political spectrum.

:Laura wanted to return to teaching but her loyalties to Adar would find herself fulfilling her political role. Her desire for a quiet life changed when she came under scrutiny and was accused of corruption in the Seacade District Scandal. Adar stood by her and eventually the scandal subsided.

Kara "Starbuck" Thrace
According to Sky One, Thrace was born on Picon but raised all over the Twelve Colonies. Her mother was a sergeant major in the Colonial Marines and a decorated veteran of the First Cylon War. Her father was named Dreilide, and is described as a "frustrated" musician.

Here is Sky One's summary of Thrace:

:Starbuck is Commander Adama's best pilot, as well as flight partner and closest comrade to Apollo, Adama's estranged son.

:Kara Thrace was born on the Picon colony, but raised all over the 12 Colonies. Her childhood was spent bouncing from one military outpost to another. Her mother was a sergeant major in the Colonial Marines, and a decorated veteran of the Cylon war. Her father, Dreilide, was a frustrated musician.

:Kara was a tough minded-child who dreamed of playing Pyramid in the big leagues someday. her mother wanted her to pursue a career in the military...Kara did not want this, so signed up to the academy to pursue her love of sports.

:Her future as a sports star ended when she was seriously injured, shattering her right knee. Most surgeons felt her knee would never be the same. Depressed, Kara applied to various post-graduate posts, but doubted she would be accepted. To her surprise, she scored the highest academic record for a flight-training exam. Kara soon discovered a love of flying.

:She would be a pilot for life - unless she got kicked out first, as Kara hated taking orders and military protocol. If that wasn't enough, Kara drank and gambled too much. While her academic and personal life was not first class, it couldn't be disputed that she was destined to fly.

:Kara served her first tour aboard the battlestar Triton, but she was not admired by all, and soon found herself shipped back to where she started.

:This is where she met Zak Adama, and fell in love. Tragedy struck when Zak failed a key flight test and his plane crashed. Kara was devastated. She then spent two years on the Galactica - concentrating on her flying.

In the podcast for "Maelstrom", he confirms that Kara Thrace grew up on several colonies on account of her mother being a sergeant major in the Colonial Marine Corps (the letter she receives lists her, incorrectly, as corporal. This is clarified in the extended DVD edition of "Razor", where Thrace refers to her mother by rank). As noted above, her knee injury is mentioned in "Resistance", and her service on Triton is noted in a personnel file seen in "The Son Also Rises".

Lee "Apollo" Adama
Here is Sky One's summary of Lee Adama:

:Lee was born and raised on the colony of Caprica, where his family were born. A headstrong, scrappy boy, he was forever getting into fights at school.

:His parents divorced when he was just eight and his younger brother Zak was raised by their mother. His father visited him when he could, but military life often took him away for long periods. Nevertheless, both boys grew up worshiping this distant figure.

:Lee always wanted to be a pilot; to follow in his father's footsteps and join the fleet. He studied hard at school, aced his entrance exams to the academy and graduated third in his class. But the boy's hero-worship eventually turned to resentment, and neither knew how to repair it.

:While Lee was at flight school, his younger brother was away at Viper Squadron and a plum assignment on Atlantia - flagship of the fleet. Lee tried to dissuade him, but Zak did not want to be the only Adama without wings on his uniform. Zak's application was turned down. As Commander Adama pulled a few strings to get his son in, Lee was furious.

:Two weeks later, Zak's plane went down while he was flying a routine solo mission and he was killed. Lee spent the next two years focusing on his career, having no personal life and working to become the perfect fighter pilot.

Part of this is contradicted by on screen evidence: Zak died during an important flight training mission and not a "routine" one. Lee did not work hard (at least after Zak's death) to be the best Viper pilot or to improve his career; multiple cast interviews, as well as Ron Moore's podcasts, state that he was despondent, didn't know what to do with his life, and was considering leaving the service. Moreover, in "Final Cut" it is established that he is a member of the Colonial Fleet Reserve, not regular fleet, indicating that he wasn't particularly concerned with a lifelong career. However, according to a deleted scene from "Razor", Lee Adama was accepted to test pilot school, showing that he is a very talented pilot, despite his lack of clear goals in his life.

Gaius Baltar
Here is Sky One's summary of Baltar:

:Scientific genius Gaius is one of the greatest minds humanity has to offer. Unfortunately, his abundance of intellect is counterbalanced by a complete lack of ethics. His moral weakness allows the Cylons to infiltrate and neutralize the defences of the 12 Colonies.

:Gaius Baltar was born on a farm on the colony of Sagittaron.

:His family had worked the land for three generations and even as a boy, Gaius hated farm life. Fortunately, his parents owned a large and sprawling agri-business controlling millions of acres across the planet; Gaius found a different use for farm life and used it to study science and maths.

:Gaius became more than a good student - he was a genius at 14.

:By the age of 21 he had his first doctorate under his belt. Soon he was being hotly pursued by every major university to set up a research lab.

:Gaius' speciality was theoretical physics, but his true passion was computer science. He saw the prevailing anti-technological edicts as short-sighted, and believed in advancing human technology that the Cylons could not infiltrate.

:Because of his achievements, Gaius' help was needed by the Defence Ministry on top-secret projects. Gaius soon found himself the keeper of secrets, a position that flattered his already impressive ego.

:Still it wasn't enough; he hungered for a chance to work on a true artificial intelligence project. He then meets a smart and beautiful woman who seemed to understand him in a way no other had. She shared his passion of A.I. systems. The relationship lasted for two years and during this time she provided him with new and innovative ideas. Only one thing was missing; Gaius could not find out anything about her. Was it the perfect relationship he once thought it was?

The description of Gaius Baltar coming from a farming family has been confirmed as well, though the writers decided to change his origin to Aerelon. In the podcast for the episode "Dirty Hands" Moore states that, according to the series bible, Baltar grew up a farmer's son in a rural community. Moore also confirms that originally Baltar was supposed to be from Sagittaron.

Sharon Valerii
According to Sky One, Sharon's memories were of growing up on the mining settlement of Troy.

Here is Sky One's summary of Valerii:

:Sharon's first memories are vivid and she occasionally revisits them in her dreams. As far as she knew she grew up with a happy, normal childhood, the product of loving parents on the mining settlement of Troy. Troy was a small, barren world of the Colonial system.

:Sharon always wanted to leave and seek a grander life. After passing the Colonial Academy's exams she left aboard a commercial transport ship.

:During the flight, her hometown was wiped out in a series of titanic explosions caused by volatile methane gas, which had ignited in a mining operation. The disaster stunned the colonies.

:She later applied for flight school and was accepted over more qualified candidates. Flight school was rough on Sharon. Not a born pilot, she laboured long and hard. By the time she had graduated. she managed to earn the second chances that she seemed fated to be given. Her first assignment was aboard the battlestar Galactica, and by the time of the Cylon attack, she had been there for almost a year.

Valerri's back story is contradicted by her telling Boxey that her parents died when she was little (Miniseries), but supported by a comment in "Downloaded", that she received a gift from her mother when she left for the Academy. Furthermore according to Adama, she had been on Galactica for nearly two years, not almost one (The Farm).

The Chronicles Of Riddick is a film series with a series bible.

:This article is capitalized for technical reasons. The correct term is "humanoid Cylon" and is not a proper noun.

Humanoid Cylons are the quintessential Cylon form in the Re-imagined Series. These Cylons biologically mimic human form so completely that they are nearly undetectable to current Colonial technologies.

Humanoid Cylons have the capacity to emulate many human physical acts, including sex. They also display convincingly human personalities (affection, jealousy, sadness, anger, sense of humor, religious faith, etc.) This behavior continues even when interacting with other Cylons outside of Colonial scrutiny, clearly establishing that their personalities are genuine.

The humanoid Cylons are responsible for masterminding the complete destruction of the Twelve Colonies through their use of sabotage and infiltration.

Origins
Following the end of the Cylon War (Miniseries), nothing was heard of the Cylons in 40 years.

During their forty years of isolation, the Cylons developed or evolved into a humanoid form.

The creation of the humanoid Cylon is left to speculation based on series events. While the opening credits claim that the Cylons "evolved", the concept of biological evolution (in the Darwinian fashion) is impossible with mechanical beings. The "evolution" is obviously a planned architectural change from the mechanical to the biomechanical for the inherent Cylon design.

The first step in their evolution from pure machines to organic beings was known as the "Hybrid." Other hybrids were later created to control baseships (Razor). Exactly how the original Cylon, the Cylon Centurion Model 0005, a sentient robot "evolved" to the humanoid form is uncertain. Saul Tigh, a humanoid Cylon, has an apparent age that would place his birth (if he was born) well before the first Cylon War, and possibly even before the creation of the original mechanical Cylon. His military record documents his existence during the war. Number Three's conversation with Cavil immediately before she was boxed indicates that the humanoid Cylons do not know who programmed them or why.

Series information shows that the humanoid Cylons existed in secret for at least two years prior to the Colonies' destruction. This information does not provide concrete evidence as to when the first models were created or how long they have been among the human population. Some of them were among the human population for at least several decades prior to the war.

Physiology and Psychology
Humanoid Cylons are visually indistinguishable from humans, down to the cellular level, but not completely at a molecular level. Dr. Gaius Baltar is able to create a detector that can distinguish Cylon from human, but rarely used the device to a positive end (Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down).

Each humanoid Cylon has the same face, stature, hair, eye and skin color, gender, apparent age, and other biometrics as all the others of his or her model. This point technically makes each copy a twin of itself, but there are some models that choose to make cosmetic differences. Examples include D'Anna Biers, Gina Inviere, and a Number Six model with black hair (Torn). In addition, each copy appears to start with the same basic personality, but each personality grows more distinct due to their individual experiences.

Humanoid Cylons can be programmed as 'sleeper agents', who appear to have a low-level Cylon personality that can conduct operations while placing the human sleeper personality "on-hold." "Boomer" Valerii was one such agent (Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II). Most agent copies, particularly Numbers Five and Six, assume a human persona but are fully aware of their true nature and behave more or less as a human "spy."

They are susceptible to the same emotional traumas and joys that their human counterparts are, further proving that personalities are a realistic part of their psyche. A case in point is a copy of Number Six, known as Gina, who is physically and sexually assaulted repeatedly by the crew of Pegasus. These repeated assaults lead to Gina's near-catatonic state at the time Pegasus discovers the Fleet (Pegasus).

Humanoid Cylons can dream, a process that appears to be natural to them.

Some or all Cylon female models may have the capacity to bear children seeded by human males ("33", "Flesh and Bone", "The Hand of God", "Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II"). The Cylons tested numerous methods of sexual reproduction, yet these failed due to a known flaw in their design. Humanoid Cylons cannot reproduce with each other biologically, so in an attempt to subvert this deficiency, they try to interbreed with humans, creating hybrid offspring. "Farms" were set up across all the occupied Colonies where survivors, specifically, young fertile women of child-bearing age, were rounded up, placed under heavy sedation and turned into "baby machines" through artificial insemination. However, this methods have been unsuccessful thus far. Another drastically different approach is taken by attempting to conceive a child through a bond of love. To most of the characters it seems that Helo and Athena's love-child, Hera is the lone success story of the relatively short history of Cylon sexual reproduction (The Farm), with the hybrid nature of Galen Tyrol's child Nicholas Tyrol unknown to anyone but the four recently revealed members of the Final Five.

The bodies of humanoid Cylons sometimes appear to have tremendous stamina and strength, and appear to be designed to destroy or resist commonly dangerous human diseases, although they are not immune from all contagions. In keeping with their desire to be a better human, however, the Cylons did not or could not further improve on other characteristic design flaws of the human body. Humanoid Cylons are heavily fortified to resist damage from intense radiation fields that would kill a human after short exposure (The Passage), but they are still susceptible to damage from certain types of radiation or trauma (Miniseries). Despite their resistance to certain forms of energy, humanoid Cylons, unlike the Cylon Centurion, cannot be made "bulletproof" ("Precipice", "Hero").

The majority of the Cylons follow a monotheistic religion (with the possible exception of the Cavil model, which appears to be an atheist).

Cybernetic Behavior
Upon the death of its body, a humanoid Cylon's consciousness is automatically transferred into another copy of itself. This "resurrection" is limited by signal integrity and proximity to the Cylon homeworld or a Resurrection Ship (Miniseries, "Flesh and Bone", "Resurrection Ship, Part II").

It appears that all humanoid Cylons share a collective knowledge base of data from other active or deactivated humanoid Cylons, regardless of their model.

Their psychology is based on what they simply refer to as "projection". Essentially an enhanced form of a self-induced and controlled hallucination, projection is how they choose to see the world around them, in any form they wish, whenever they wish. For example, if a Cylon were standing in a hallway, they could choose to see it as a forest filled with birds, trees, and sunlight. This mode of visualization is pleasing to agents (Torn).

Although they cannot do so remotely or wirelessly, humanoid Cylons can interface with a computer system or computer network by photo-electrical means. They can perform this through subdermal physical contact if required (Flight of the Phoenix) or, preferably, through a Cylon data port. This might be possible through the use of bio-luminescent and photosensitive cells in their hands.

The presence of a water-like fluid as an integral part of the basestar, the ability to interface photo-electronically through subdermal and dermal contact, and the fact that humanoid Cylon are anatomically indistinguishable from human beings, implies that the techniques used in their creation are advanced enough to incorporate cybernetic functions into their design without the use of specific internal structures other than human-like organs.

<div style="clear: both;"></div>

Known Cylon Models
There are twelve models of humanoid Cylons (Miniseries), representing twelve personality archetypes that the Cylons have witnessed in humanity. These can be divided into two separate groups, the "Significant Seven" and the "Final Five".
According to show producers, the two groups are "fundamentally different." Material above only applies to the Significant Seven. The religion, origin, physiology and cybernetic properties of the Final Five remain largely unrevealed.

The twelve models have numerical designations, however only four of these have been revealed so far. With the exceptions of Three and Six, most models are referred to by their "human names", even by other Cylons. There appears to be no significance to any of the specific numbers assigned to the different Cylons.

Significant Seven
Seven models revealed to the viewers as Cylons have also been revealed to the central Colonial characters within the first two seasons. There are many copies of each model, although the specific number of copies per model has not been specified.

Number Three
First seen posing as a reporter from the Fleet News Service, this model is revealed to be a Cylon at the end of "Final Cut" when a second copy is shown living on Caprica. Threes seem to be the most calculating and duplicitous models shown to-date, even manipulating and deceiving other models if they feel warranted. The copy that tried to box Sharon Valerii exhibited these characteristics strongly in the episode, "Downloaded".

This model's status as a Cylon is unknown to the Colonials until either shortly after the rescue of the surviving members of the Caprica Resistance (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II), or after the Cylon occupation of New Caprica (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II.)

After the Threes defy other Cylon models in their attempt to discern the identity of the five missing Cylon humanoids, the other Cylons conclude that the Three model has an inherent flaw that threatens their overall reliability. After the failure on the algae planet to gather information on the path to Earth, the Cylons have all Number Three models boxed indefinitely.

A copy of this model has appeared under the alias "D'Anna Biers".
<div style="clear: both;"></div>

Number Five
This model attempts to sow the seeds of discontent or confusion, particularly during crucial life-threatening situations, and endeavors to undermine authority that threatens his objectives (Miniseries). Number Five models are more covert, assuming an ordinary "everyman" appearance that's blended in what may seem to be insignificant behind-the-scenes issues (such as converting Galactica into a museum). Of all the models thus far, the Number Five models are the most militant, fanatic and consistent in message and objectives to the Cylon objectives, whether he is dispassionately discussing the fate of humanity with his comrades or attempting to kill or maim Colonials in a suicide bomb attack (Litmus).

Viewers first meet a Number Five during a tour of Galactica with other Colonial citizens (possibly the press) at the start of the Miniseries, but are not sure of the Cylon's true identity until the Miniseries' conclusion.

Copies of this model have appeared under the alias "Aaron Doral".
<div style="clear: both;"></div>

Number Six
This is the first humanoid Cylon model shown to viewers at the start of the Miniseries.

Stunning beautiful, promiscuous and sensual, this model utilizes the human need and desire for sexual relations to her advantage. She tends to be very religious and monotheistic. Number 6 desires to know what it is to be alive. There is something inherently enigmatic about her, more so than with the other models. Sixes have been described as "usually so hardcore", referring to their tendencies towards violence.

Copies of this model have appeared under the aliases "Shelly Godfrey", "Gina", and "Caprica" (in honor of her work on Caprica towards the destruction of the Colonies). A Virtual Six, whom only Gaius Baltar can see is a mainstay of the cast, and is clearly the dominant party in their "relationship".

<div style="clear: both;"></div>

Number Eight
Number Eight is generally a saboteur designed to infiltrate Colonial military units and is likely programmed to use any Colonial munitions to cause havoc (Water). The Number Eight model is the closest witnessed humanoid Cylon model to show its abilities as a soldier. This model has shown naiveté in many matters. She is apparently not as religious as other Cylon models, but has demonstrated that she can love, and is capable of being impregnated by a human ("Six Degrees of Separation", "Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II").

She may be "defective", as the Cylon programming within the sleeper agent known as "Boomer" on Galactica conflicts multiple times with its human personality (Water). Also, the fully aware Sharon Valerii found by Helo on Caprica switches alliances from Cylon to Colonial after falling in love with Helo and aids the Colonials for a time (several episodes, most notably "Flight of the Phoenix"). Number Eight is the third humanoid Cylon introduced during the Miniseries. However, viewers do not discover her true identity until the very end of the Miniseries when a second copy of Sharon Valerii appears at Ragnar Anchorage while retrieving an abandoned copy of Number Five.

A copy of this model has appeared under the name "Sharon "Boomer" Valerii." One copy, Sharon "Athena" Agathon, has defected from the Cylon and has joined the Colonial Fleet, generally replacing her "Boomer" counterpart as a Raptor pilot.
<div style="clear: both;"></div>

Leoben Conoy
Leoben Conoy (model number unknown) is the fourth model seen by viewers (although viewers would not know until the end of the Miniseries that they had already seen the third introduced humanoid Cylon, Sharon Valerii). The Conoy model has shown to be mystically oriented--making references to the oneness of the universe, the illusion of time, etc.--and claims to be prescient on some level, albeit with a known propensity for intermixing truth with falsehoods. He is first discovered on Ragnar Station, claiming to be a scavenger and arms dealer (Miniseries).

The Conoy models also appear obsessed with matters of mating, bonding, and reproduction, as demonstrated by a particular model's fascination and obsession with Kara Thrace ("Flesh and Bone", "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II", "Occupation", "Precipice" and "Exodus, Part II").

Conoy can be likened to the serpent of the Genesis tale in the Earth Christian Bible, taunting people with knowledge, then watching as the negative consequences come into devastating fruition. Leoben copies have likely been encountered by the Caprica Resistance, as Samuel Anders recites in jest some comments made by another Leoben copy captured in the Fleet ("Flesh and Bone", "The Farm").
<div style="clear: both;"></div>

Simon
The Simon model (model number unknown) is first encountered by Kara Thrace on Cylon-occupied Caprica. Posing as a doctor, this Simon is actually involved with the Cylon hybridization program. Simon resembles a tall, somewhat thin middle-aged black man who speaks in a comforting strong voice (The Farm) Unlike other models, Simon does not seem to have many military aspects to his physical or mental configuration, and is easily overcome by a wounded Thrace. Simon may be a model based primarily on human intellectualism and logic. It is unknown if a Simon model infiltrated the Fleet prior to the occupation of New Caprica. In any case, the model is now known to the general populace, many humans likely saw a Simon model during the occupation.
<div style="clear: both;"></div>

Cavil
One of the Cavil models (model number unknown) poses as a Colonial brother, a lay clergyman in the Fleet.

Cavil models do not appear to subscribe to overall theology of the Cylons, but adhere to group consensus, and often are persuasive leaders. Cavils have displayed a condescending attitude toward the beliefs of the other six known Cylons at times.

In several instances, the Cavils advocate dark, draconian solutions to the insurgency on New Caprica that reveal a militant zeal equaling that of Numbers Three and Five.
<div style="clear: both;"></div>

Final Five
Final Five

The identities of the remaining five Cylon models remained a mystery long after the revelation of the identities of the "Significant Seven".

In "Torn", Caprica-Six mentions to Gaius Baltar that the Cylons do not talk about the missing five humanoid Cylons. In the same episode, Baltar confirms that, during his time with the Cylons on occupied New Caprica and on a basestar, he only saw the first seven models. It is later revealed that the Significant seven themselves do not know (or have repressed) the identities of these final five models.

In "Crossroads, Part II" four major characters discover they are Cylons: Galen Tyrol, Saul Tigh, Samuel Anders and Tory Foster. They were previously unaware of their nature, and this information is limited only to themselves. While shocked by their discovery, they all remain loyal to humanity.
The Final Cylon model
Humanoid Cylon speculation
There remains one final Cylon model to be revealed. During a Q&A session on the official Sci Fi Channel Battlestar Galactica forum, Ron Moore notes that he has already decided who the last Cylon is, and has already left clues as to who it is.

Human/Cylon Hybrids
Conceived by the Eight believed to be Sharon Valerii and Helo, the infant Hera Agathon is the first known human/Cylon hybrid.

Gaius Baltar's internal Number Six regularly insists that Hera is actually the child of herself and Baltar, though there is no physical reason yet presented to justify that claim.

For some time Hera was hidden away from both humans and Cylons, and believed to be dead by her parents. President Laura Roslin had the baby hidden with Maya as her adoptive parent. Despite Roslin's attempts to protect the child on New Caprica, Hera is later found by the Cylons (Exodus, Part II).

After Hera's mother discovers that her daughter is alive, she uses her ability to download to transport to the Cylon ships, and manages to convince Caprica-Six to return the child to Galactica for medical treatment for a possible intestinal blockage, which the Cylon doctors, lacking pediatric knowledge, were unable to comprehend (Rapture).

A child, Kacey, is presented by a Conoy model to Kara Thrace as an hybrid offspring purportedly created with their genetic material in the episode "Occupation". The Cylons' ruse is revealed when Kacey's human mother later claims the child (Exodus, Part II).

Nicholas Tyrol is also a Cylon/human hybrid (Crossroads, Part II, ).
Speculated Infiltrators
:See the Humanoid Cylon speculation article for analysis on characters and their likelihood of being a humanoid Cylon, based on episode information.

Notes
*Ron D. Moore stated in an interview with TheFandom.com, "There is no original human Sharon. The idea is not that there was likely an original human model that they were copied from. The idea was that these models of Cylon were sort of developed out of their own study of us. The Cylons on some level looked at humanity and said 'You know what? There's really only 12 of you.' If these are the 12, and sort of if you look at them they each represent different archetypes of what humanity is." This established as canon that:
** There are precisely twelve human Cylon models. The other varieties of Cylon spacecraft or fighters are not factored into this count of 12 models.
** None of the humanoid Cylons were ever an actual human.
** The twelve models are based on archetypes determined by the Cylons that form what they perceive were the specific kinds of human behavior and/or personality, distilled into twelve varieties.
* A Cylon Centurion cannot distinguish the differing versions of one model from another (Precipice). For example, if faced with two differing Number Eight models, Sharon "Boomer" Valerii and Sharon "Athena" Agathon, it would not be able to discriminate between them without external aid.
* While Centurions may not be able to tell the difference between different versions of the same model, other humanoid Cylons do not have this problem ("Downloaded", "Exodus, Part I", "The Eye of Jupiter").
* According to Cavil in "Exodus, Part I", the pain associated with each successive download is worse than the one before. The first download feels like little more than a headache, but the third feels like someone has rushed a white hot poker through the head. However, this might be a subjective feeling that varies with model and circumstances. Sharon Agathon's report in "Scar" supports Cavil, but a Number Three considers her last download to be rejuvenating (Downloaded).
*Some characters refer to humanoid cylons as "skinjobs". This is a reference to the film Blade Runner, in which Edward James Olmos played a supporting. "Skinjob" was used in Blade Runner as an insult to replicants (robots made to look human).
* Cylon Culture
