==Overview==

* "The Fleet" originates as a convoy of about 60 commercial and civilian ships in the space surrounding [[Caprica (RDM)|Caprica]]. [[Laura Roslin]] - with the aid of [[Sharon Valerii]] - initiates the clustering of stranded vessels in the aftermath of the Cylon invasion of the Twelve Colonies, thus forming the convoy. Around twenty of these ships are abandoned to a squadron of attacking [[Raider (RDM)|Raiders]] because they either lack [[FTL]] drives, or are damaged, like the sublight ''[[Botanical Cruiser]]'' and ''[[Gemenon Liner 1701]]''. The remaining vessels join battlestar ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]'' - the only Colonial warship [[Pegasus (RDM)|known]] at the time to have survived the Cylon attack - in the upper atmosphere of the gas giant [[Ragnar]]. From here on, ''Galactica'' shoulders the role of the Fleet's protector ([[TRS]]: [[Miniseries]]).
** [[Anastasia Dualla|Petty Officer Anastasia Dualla]] explains that 53 ships have jumped away from an attacking Cylon baseship, with 10 still reporting trouble with their FTL drives. Adding ''Galactica'' to this tally, results in a total number of 64 ships ([[TRS]]: "[[33]]").
** [[Saul Tigh|Colonel Saul Tigh]]'s first statement that the 24 ships departing with the [[Laura Roslin faction]] represent "almost a third of the Fleet", implies that the number of ships in the Fleet is approximately in the mid-70's. However, later, Tigh's response to the number of civilians joining Roslin is "That's over a third of the people in the Fleet." Since "the Fleet" s used interchangeably to describe both the ships and the civilian populace, this could imply that Tigh's previous statement was an estimate of the people who left and not the number of ships lost ([[TRS]]: "[[The Farm]]", "[[Home, Part I]]").

* The phrase "the Fleet" functions not only as a signifier for the actual ships of the convoy, but as an indicator of the people on board, and therefore for mankind. Often the term is used to refer to the civilian populations, as opposed to the military personnel of ''Galactica'' and ''Pegasus''. Usage of the term "the Fleet" has not gained more than an informal acceptance, as can be seen by President Roslin's continued use of the term ''President of the [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)|Twelve Colonies]]''.<ref>This may be interpreted either as an expression of hope that the people of the Fleet will re-establish themselves on a new world, or a psychological inability to accept the Fleet as the only home that humanity will know for a long time.</ref>

* The fleet is joined by Rebel Cylons after their numbers are destroyed by an ambush by John Cavil. * The ships of the fleet would eventually abandoned by the survivors four years after being forced to flee their homes. By this point the fleet has fallen into disrepair, with the ''Galactica'' no longer able to protect them. The stresses of years spent in space without proper maintenance and New Caprica has taken its toll. Ultimately, the decision is made to abandon ''Galactica'' for the basestar, but she takes part in [[Battle of The Colony|one last op]] against loyal Cylon forces. ==Population Demographics==
A few points of information are available concerning the demographics of the Fleet. In "[[33]]", before the destruction of the Olympic Carrier, there are 5,251 survivors from Sagittaron and 49,998 total survivors. In "[[Home, Part I]]", the [[Laura Roslin faction]] leaves the Fleet with 18,000 individuals, of which 9,500 ware Gemenese and 6,250 were Capricans. At that time the total population of the Fleet is 47,857.

This information is sparse, but it gives a general idea of the population breakdown of the Fleet if a few assumptions are made for the sake of argument.
*Note that Gemenon and Caprica have more citizens in the Roslin faction alone than Sagittaron has in the entire Fleet. The Twelve Colonies are clearly not represented in equal proportion.

The Fleet is stated at about 75 ships in "[[Resistance (episode)|Resistance]]", retconned up from 40 in the Miniseries.

== Analysis ==

* By the time of Felix Gaeta's and Tom Zarek's mutiny aboard ''Galactica'' ([[TRS]]: "[[Blood on the Scales]]"), dialogue indicates that the Fleet is down to the very low figure of 35 civilian ships, a surprising loss of about half the initial ships from "[[33]]". Most of these losses remain unaccounted for, as very few civilian ships have been seen or heard to be actually lost on screen. Given that the human population has only declined by about one fifth at this point rather than a similar half, this could be a continuity error or retcon, or the remaining ships would have had to nearly double the number of civilians aboard to compensate. It is possible in the context of the dialogue in the episode that the figure of 35 referred only to the number of ships initially loyal to the mutineers.
* The political and social troubles befalling the Fleet as it wanders through space, serve as a metaphor for all of humanity, since the Fleet literally ''is'' what is left of humanity in the television series.

Flight Sergeant '''Jolly''' can be best described as a hefty, jovial, likable fellow; in addition to being a quite competent [[Viper (TOS)|Viper]] pilot who serves on ''[[Galactica (TOS)|Galactica]]''.

== Biography ==

Jolly is involved in the discovery of the [[pluton poisoning]] of the foodstuffs they had gotten from the [[Twelve Colonies (TOS)|Colonies]] before making way. He is also part of the [[landram]] expedition that helps to discover the [[tylium]] deposits on [[Carillon]] after passing through the [[Straits of Madagon]]. He, [[Serina]], and [[Apollo (TOS)|Apollo]] are subsequently captured and brought to [[Lotay]], Queen of the [[Ovions]].

One of the many [[warrior]]s that are unable to attend the ceremonies, the Flight Sergeant instead stays alert since [[Adama (TOS)|Adama]] expects the [[Cylons (TOS)|Cylons]] to attack. When they do, Jolly comes riding in atop of a landram and drives off the Cylon onslaught as the Colonials flee the Ovions glorified farm. He comments later that Adama had expected the attack and had uniforms of the pilots distributed to anyone he could find -- civilians, techs, and cooks -- and quips, "You should see the one who got my uniform!" ([[Saga of a Star World]])

Lieutenant [[Boomer (TOS)|Boomer]] often flies as Jolly's wingman, and together they discover a Cylon outpost on an asteroid. They manage to escape relatively undetected, but contract a life-threatening disease. Bypassing normal quarantine procedure in order to make it to Apollo's bachelor party, Boomer and Jolly infect a majority of the Viper corps, save Apollo and [[Starbuck (TOS)|Starbuck]] who are delayed from returning after encountering the void ([[Lost Planet of the Gods, Part I]]).

Thanks to the efforts of the female [[Colonial Shuttle (TOS)|shuttle]] pilots that had been trained to become [[Blue Squadron]] in the absence of the ailing warriors, [[Salik|Dr. Salik]] is able to discover a cure. Jolly and the other pilots are barely able to walk when they first recover, but they climb into their Vipers to join the [[Battle of Kobol (TOS)|battle]] over [[Kobol (TOS)|Kobol]] ([[Lost Planet of the Gods, Part II]]).

During a Cylon raid, Jolly is one of two Viper pilots who figures out the Cylon agenda to attack and destroy the [[agro ships]]. He manages to save the day by protecting the last remaining agro ship ([[Agro Ship 9]]), but can not save the crops aboard. He accompanies Adama, Apollo, Starbuck, Boomer, [[Boxey (TOS)|Boxey]] and [[Siress]] [[Belloby]] to [[Sectar (planet)|Sectar]] on their mission to trade for agricultural seed, but stays behind on the shuttle ([[The Magnificent Warriors]]).

While flying a patrol with [[Red Squadron]] Jolly is amongst the pilots that are abducted by the colossal [[Ship of Lights]]. Of course, after [[Iblis]] is cast out due to the Count's killing of Apollo, Jolly is returned along with Boomer, [[Bojay]], and the other taken Viper pilots ([[War of the Gods, Part I|War of the Gods]]).

Boomer and Jolly make their way to the [[Rising Star (TOS)|''Rising Star'']] when Adama grants the [[Warrior|warriors]] [[furlon]]. Jolly seems content to settle in and watch the dancers for the duration, but is interupted when a [[Borellian Nomen]] activates a [[laser bola]], inciting panic. Boomer disarms the Nomen, and manages to resolve the situation without conflict. Jolly is later left aboard the ''Rising Star'' to ensure that the two remaining Nomen leave on the next shuttle after their younger companion is taken into custody ([[The Man with Nine Lives]]).

Jolly assists Starbuck, Apollo, Salik and [[Cassiopeia]] sneak [[Terra|Terrans]] [[Michael]] and [[Sarah]] back on ''[[Lunar Avion]]'' that Michael appropriates, and helps keep up the façade that they are transferring the children off of the ship. Prior to this, he refers to them, almost humorously, as "[[Earthlings]]". When their deception is revealed by [[Reese]], Boomer quips to Jolly: "Jolly! You forgot the kids!" This scene gives the ''Lunar Avion'' the opportunity to leave ''[[Galactica (TOS)|Galactica]]'''s bays and for Apollo and Starbuck to "pursue" ([[Greetings from Earth]]).

This conflict began when the Colonies aided the [[Hasari]] in taking back "their nation" from the Cylons. The exact nature of the Hasari and their relationship to the Colonies remains unknown ([[Saga of a Star World]]).

Given the war's duration, it appears that efforts normally occuring during peacetime were curtailed.
