Sharon "Athena" Agathon is a copy of the humanoid Cylon model Number Eight who is first encountered by Karl "Helo" Agathon, when he is stranded on Caprica. She is initially assigned to seduce him by impersonating Lieutenant Sharon Valerii, as part of a Cylon cross-breeding experiment, but later turns against her people and helps him escape the planet; pregnant with his child during that time. Helo, first shocked by her true nature, ultimately accepts her as the mother of his child and declares his love for her.

Once on Galactica, she is imprisoned and long seen as a mere object. She frequently provides intelligence, but is severely mistreated by an interrogator from Pegasus who beats and sexually assaults her. Over time, she earns Admiral Adama's trust by helping the Colonial Fleet escape peril several times, and she is eventually appointed as a Colonial Officer and marries Karl Agathon. Agathon gives birth on Galactica, but her daughter, Hera, is subsequently hidden from her, because President Roslin considers the baby a threat to the Fleet. Agathon believes Hera to be dead for more than a year, but after learning the truth about her child during a confrontation with Valerii, she is able to regain her daughter from the Cylons with the help of Caprica-Six.

Biography
Cylon cross-breeding experiment on Caprica
Sharon is a Number Eight model first seen on Caprica shortly after the Fall of the Twelve Colonies and the Cylons decide to use her in an elaborate experiment focused on Karl "Helo" Agathon who is stranded on the planet. She is an identical copy of Helo's friend and colleague Lieutenant Sharon Valerii and the Cylons hope to explore the possibilities of Cylon-human procreation by getting Helo to fall in love with her (The Farm). Sharon appears to Helo to rescue him after he is captured by a Six and several Cylon Centurions. Unaware that Cylons have developed human models, Helo believes her to be Sharon Valerii from Galactica, returning to rescue him (33). Following this staged rescue, she leads Helo to a Raptor, now surrounded by Cylon Centurions, and convinces him that they have no direct way off the planet (Water). Sharon is able to impersonate Lieutenant Valerii convincingly, since she has accessed Valerii's entire memories (Flesh and Bone).

After receiving a feigned Colonial signal on a radio receiver they carry, Sharon leads Helo to a city where they find a fully-equipped fallout shelter in which two people can live in reasonable security, hidden from above-ground Cylon operations, and with sufficient supplies to last a considerable period of time (Act of Contrition). The purpose in establishing this retreat is to elicit an emotional response in Helo towards his Cylon companion. When this fails and Helo continues to seek a way off Caprica, the Cylons lead him to believe that Sharon has been captured, concluding that if Helo does not seek to rescue her, the experiment has failed and he must be killed (You Can't Go Home Again).

Helo does undertake a successful rescue attempt and shortly after, the two of them have sex for the first time in a nearby forest. Helo had always been fond of the original Valerii on Galactica, but his affection for her was stilled by her relationship with Chief Galen Tyrol (Six Degrees of Separation). Pleased with the progress, the Cylons set up a new hideout, a cabin in the woods, and Sharon is instructed to lead him there and have him stay with her – or kill him, if he attempts to leave (Flesh and Bone). But she begins to question the Cylons' overall goal. Realizing that she has herself fallen in love with Helo, Sharon disobeys her instructions and leads Helo to Delphi, where they hope to steal a vehicle and get off the planet (Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down). On their way to Delphi, she shows signs of being pregnant, succumbing to a bout of morning sickness (The Hand of God) and developing a ravenous appetite (Colonial Day).

Revelation of her true identity and arrival at the Fleet
On reaching Delphi, Sharon and Helo break into the Cylon facilities to gain access to the spaceport. But as Helo encounters yet another Number Eight model, he draws the initial conclusion that Sharon is a human clone created by the Cylons and goes on the run alone (Colonial Day). When Sharon catches up with him, she tried to calm him down and eventually challenges him to shoot her, after he tells her to stay away (Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I). Helo can only bring himself to wound her, and he takes Sharon with him to use her in some way to get off Caprica. While Helo keeps her at gunpoint, Sharon leads him to the Delphi Museum. Waiting out a storm in a nearby ruined building, she explains to him that she is “Sharon”, not a mere clone or a copy, and that she is as real as Sharon Valerii on Galactica. She also tells him that her love for him is real and that she is pregnant with his child.

When Sharon and Helo come across Lieutenant Kara Thrace who has landed near the museum to retrieve the Arrow of Apollo, Thrace realizes on-sight that Sharon is a Cylon (having left Valerii behind on Galactica) and she attempts to shoot her. Helo stops Thrace and reveals to her that Sharon is pregnant with his child (Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II). Thrace also wrongly concludes that she must be a Cylon copy of the real Valerii on Galactica; Sharon's attempts to explain her identity to her are unsuccessful. While Thrace and Helo argue over her, Sharon escapes in Thrace's Cylon Raider to save herself and the life of her unborn child (Scattered).

Several days later, Sharon returns to Helo who is now with a human resistance movement that has formed on Caprica. She offers her help in finding Thrace who was abducted during a Cylon ambush (The Farm). Thrace manages to escape to the outside of the hospital where she was imprisoned and Sharon arrives at the rescue scene in a stolen Cylon Heavy Raider, destroying several Cylon Centurions that attack the Resistance rescue party. Following the successful rescue, Sharon accompanies Helo and Thrace on their way back to the human Fleet in the Heavy Raider.

When they arrive at the Fleet and Sharon walks aboard the Astral Queen, Captain Lee Adama reacts violently. The son of Commander Adama who was shot by the Cylon "sleeper" agent Valerii grabs her and places his gun to her head. Helo draws his sidearm against Adama, forcing a standoff. President Laura Roslin urges both men to withdraw their weapons, but then immediately orders Sharon to be ejected out an airlock. Sharon tells Roslin she knows the location of the Tomb of Athena, an ancient place Roslin is trying to find, and she reconsiders, placing Sharon in the brig. Roslin later explains that she suspects Sharon is willing to cooperate, because she wants to protect Helo and her unborn child, something Roslin interprets as a mothering instinct.

Guide on Kobol
Sharon accompanies Roslin's party to Kobol. She recites specific passages of the Tomb of Athena in the scriptures of the Sacred Scrolls and plots the group's path on the planet. On their way they are ambushed by Cylon Centurions who open fire. As the others take cover and return fire, Sharon vaults away, with Captain Adama in pursuit, believing she is trying to escape. Sharon picks up a grenade launcher lying ahead, and as Adama thinks she is about to shoot him, she aims for the remaining Centurion and destroys it (Home, Part I). At camp, Adama voices suspicions about Helo who still loves Sharon, despite his awareness of her true nature as a Cylon. During the trek, Sharon casually tells Helo that their child is a girl.

Shortly after, Commander Adama’s search party arrives at Roslin's camp. When Adama sees Sharon who exactly resembles the Cylon who shot him, he immediately tries to choke her to death. He is forced to release her, after Sharon touches his fresh wound, leaving him with severe chest pain. During their struggle, Sharon enigmatically references what Adama said over Sharon Valerii’s dead body, saying “and you asked why” aloud.

Later, one of Tom Zarek's followers, Meier, tries to convince Sharon to help him kill both Adamas, as part of a plan to gain control of the Fleet. Sharon initially believed that Sharon Valerii was being held in the brig, but Meier informs her that she was killed. She expresses her outrage to Helo that Cally received only a minor punishment for this murder. Sharon deduces that the Colonials do not see humanoid Cylons as people and that she must take matters into her own hands to prove her trustworthiness. Sharon appears to take up Meier's proposal to kill both Commander Adama and Captain Adama, but as Meier draws his weapon, she kills him instead, saving the lives of both Adamas. She announces to Commander Adama that she is not the same Cylon who shot him, and that she has no hidden protocols waiting to be activated; she makes her own choices. She then surrenders her weapon to Adama and successfully leads them to the Tomb of Athena.

Cooperation with the human Fleet
Sharon is brought aboard Galactica and imprisoned in a new reinforced cell that was originally designed to incarcerate Sharon Valerii. The virtual Number Six tells Dr. Gaius Baltar that Sharon's baby will be born in that cell and that the child belongs to Baltar and her (Home, Part II).

During her imprisonment, Sharon nearly has a miscarriage, and is brought to sickbay where Dr. Cottle succeeds in saving the fetus. A Number Three model who poses as the reporter D'anna Biers in the Fleet News Service, stumbles upon Sharon while filming a documentary on board Galactica and she manages to send footage of Sharon back to Caprica. The Cylons are surprised, yet overjoyed, that Sharon is still alive. They are concerned that her hybrid child survives; saying that it must be protected at all costs (Final Cut).

When Galactica experiences mysterious computer failures and system malfunctions from a mutated version of a Cylon virus, Commander Adama orders Helo to show the incarcerated Sharon the strange Cylon code. Sharon identifies it as a virulent logic bomb that will take control of the ship and kill off the crew without her help. Reluctantly, on advice from President Roslin, Adama brings Sharon to CIC, where she cuts her arm open and connects herself to a fiber optic data line to communicate with Galactica's mainframe computer. On accessing the computer, she takes into her a portion of the logic bomb code, and then instructs Lieutenant Gaeta to wipe the system's hard drives to erase all Cylon virus traces. As the crew restarts the ship’s computers, a massive Cylon fighter force jumps into range, leaving Galactica defenseless. Sharon makes adjustments to the code and transmits the altered virus from Galactica to the Cylons, disabling the entire fleet of Cylon fighters (Flight of the Phoenix).

Interrogation and abuse
After Galactica reunites with battlestar Pegasus, Admiral Helena Cain sends Lieutenant Alastair Thorne to inspect the incarcerated Sharon. He beats and sexually assaults her with the help of several of his guards. Helo and Chief Tyrol find out about Thorne and what was done to his previous prisoner, and they arrive in time to stop him, but Tyrol accidentally kills Thorne in the process. Both Tyrol and Helo are arrested by the Pegasus guards and taken to Admiral Cain's battlestar, where Cain hastily convenes courts-martial for them, sentencing both to death (Resurrection Ship, Part I).

Sharon's attempted rape results in a hairline fracture in one of her ribs and minor bruising. Commander Adama who has reached a détente with Admiral Cain over Helo and Tyrol's execution personally apologizes to Sharon over the incident; this is also the first time that Adama refers to Sharon as "her," instead of "it." Later, Adama asks to speak with her in private, questioning her why the Cylons hate humanity. She responds by reminding him of a speech he gave before the attacks, in which he suggested that humanity is a flawed creation, and she implies that therefore humanity might not deserve to survive. Sharon is later reunited with Helo and Tyrol when the two are released after Cain's death, as Adama resumes full command of the Fleet (Resurrection Ship, Part II).

Weeks later, President Roslin, on her deathbed, orders that Sharon's fetus be aborted, fearing the baby might be dangerous for the Fleet. On hearing this news, Sharon is enraged, having cooperated fully to aid the Fleet to save herself and her child, and to show that not all Cylons are dangerous. Marines are sent to take her to sickbay to forcibly perform the abortion procedure. At the last minute, Dr. Baltar learns that the fetal blood of Sharon's baby has the ability to destroy cancer cells. He takes a small blood sample and injects it into the dying Roslin; moments later, her cancer disappears. The abortion procedure is cancelled (Epiphanies).

Despite her mistreatment, Sharon continues to support the Fleet and provides intelligence. She helps Captain Thrace to understand the behavior of Cylon Raiders (Scar), and frequently assists Admiral Adama to plot the Fleet's course in order to avoid Cylon confrontation. Colonel Tigh remains extremely skeptical of her increased involvement (Sacrifice).

Birth of her daughter Hera
When Sharon begins to bleed due to a detached placenta, Dr. Cottle performs an emergency birth procedure to save both her and the baby's life. Sharon and Helo name the baby girl Hera. After her parents believe Hera is out of danger, the baby apparently dies due to her underdeveloped lungs and Dr. Cottle's failure to intubate her in time. Sharon, suspecting her child was killed deliberately, nearly strangles Dr. Cottle before being subdued, and she subsequently falls into a deep depression.

However, unbeknownst to Sharon and Helo, Hera is still alive. President Roslin who still considers the child a danger for the Fleet had Sharon's baby switched with the body of a dead child and, with the help of Dr. Cottle and her aide Tory Foster, places Hera in the care of Maya, a foster mother. Maya is told a cover story that disguises Hera's true identity (Downloaded). Admiral Adama is not informed of Roslin's plan (The Eye of Jupiter).

Sharon's depression over losing her child worsens and Helo convinces her to aid in the rescue of Samuel Anders and other survivors on Caprica, in part to try and draw her out of her depression. Sharon's knowledge of Cylon FTL technology makes the rescue possible. She acts as a conduit between the Colonial Raptors and the far more advanced FTL computer salvaged from the Cylon Heavy Raider she once brought back to Galactica (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I).

On Caprica, Captain Thrace demonstrates a new level of trust for Sharon by handing her a gun during a firefight with ambushing Cylon Centurions. Later, Sharon is as perplexed as everyone else when the Cylons disengage and apparently leave the planet. She is aware, however, that Cavil, a man who approaches the group and loudly proclaims the end of the occupation to be a miracle, is a Cylon. On Galactica, Cavil is exposed by Chief Tyrol, and Admiral Adama sends Sharon back to the brig. When asked by a distraught Helo why she did not mention that Cavil is Cylon, she replies "They killed my baby. Do you think I care about you, or us, or whether or not Adama trusts me anymore?" Sharon withdraws further, shutting Helo out completely (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II).

Officer of the Colonial Fleet
More than a year later, and four months after Galactica and Pegasus's retreat from New Caprica, Sharon Agathon is now married to Karl "Helo" Agathon. In the year that has passed, Admiral Adama has taken Sharon into his confidence and the two periodically sit down to tea; her cell now has a couch, a table, and other amenities (Occupation). Adama commissions Agathon into the Colonial Fleet as a Lieutenant (Junior Grade). In her first mission, Agathon leads an insertion force that will serve as a liaison between the New Caprica Resistance and Galactica during the extraction of the New Caprica population. She commands two Raptors in an intra-atmosphere jump and links up with Samuel Anders and his squad at the Breeders Canyon. Their planning is interrupted when Cylon Centurions ambush their position (Precipice). Agathon and her assigned Marines anticipated enemy contact, so the Marines, from a supporting position, can neutralize the Cylon attackers.

On the following day, Agathon covertly enters the Cylon detention center to recover the launch keys for the grounded Colonial ships, bypassing human and Centurion guards that cannot distinguish Agathon from other Eights. After interfacing with a data terminal and obtaining the keys, a Number Three enters the room and challenges her loyalty. The Three tells her that Hera is still alive, but Agathon rejects the notion, shoots the Three in each leg to slow her eventual report back to other Cylons. When she hands over the launch keys to Chief Tyrol, she asks him if he had actually seen Hera's ashes, which he affirms (Exodus, Part I).

Following the Battle of New Caprica, the Agathons and many other pilots eat in the mess hall. After Racetrack addresses Agathon as "Boomer," Helo asks the crew for suggestions for a more appropriate callsign. A number of humorous and affectionate responses arise (reflecting Agathon's trust and comfort amongst the human crew), but Helo opts for Hot Dog's suggestion, "Athena" (Torn).

Agathon undertakes a solo recon mission through a high radiation cluster to look for a planet with suitable material to replenish the Fleet's lost food supplies. Agathon's Cylon physiology withstands radiation levels that would have killed a human, although not without some discomfort. The successful mission confirms the foodstuffs on a planet with algae and gives needed data to safely attempt the guide the Fleet (The Passage).

Reunification with her child
During a stand-off at the Algae planet, a Cylon delegation boards Galactica to negotiate for the Eye of Jupiter. Agathon, near the conference area, instantly identifies the Eight from the baseship delegation as "Boomer. Valerii tells Agathon that her daughter, Hera, is still alive and also notes President Roslin's involvement in her daughter's disappearance. After confirming the matter with Roslin, Admiral Adama informs Agathon that Hera's death was indeed fabricated without his knowledge. Agathon angrily demands to see her child. (The Eye of Jupiter).

Agathon convinces Helo that the only way to rescue Hera is for her to download to the Cylon fleet and infiltrate the basestar where Hera is kept. Reluctantly, Helo agrees to shoot her and Agathon is subsequently downloaded and resurrected on the nearby resurrection ship where she is greeted by Caprica-Six upon rebirth. Agathon pretends that she wants to stay with the Cylons and Caprica-Six leads her to Hera. Her daughter is ill and apparently rejecting Valerii who has been taking care of the child on board the Cylon vessel. Following Agathon's demand that Hera needs to see a human doctor, Valerii threatens to kill Hera, but Caprica-Six intervenes and kills Valerii instead. Accompanied by Caprica-Six, Agathon and her daugther leave the basetar in a captured Raptor and return to Galactica (Rapture).

Notes
* This Number Eight is usually called "Sharon" and more recently "Athena," while Sharon Valerii is often just called "Boomer," as that callsign is closely associated with her. Until season 3, this copy was referred to as the Caprica copy ("Caprica-Sharon"), because she was first encountered on Caprica.
*Sharon Agathon's callsign, "Athena," may be a reference to her nature as a Cylon, if the Colonists share the Greek myth that Pallas Athene sprung from the head of Zeus fully grown without ever having a childhood – much as a Cylon does.
* Athena is one of the Lords of Kobol. In Home, Part II, Sharon relates the death of Athena on Kobol, "Athena [threw] herself down [from the Gates of Hera] onto the rocks below, out of despair over the Exodus of the thirteen tribes."
* Her callsign also creates a parallelism with the Original Series character of Athena. In the Original Series, Athena was the daughter of Adama. William Adama, in the Re-imagined Series, felt a close fatherly bond to Sharon Valerii. Agathon's relationship with Adama is very similar and reinforces the similarity with the Original Series character.
Overview
:Adama faces the memory of his late wife and their marriage as he marks his wedding anniversary. Meanwhile Cally and Galen Tyrol are trapped in a depressurizing airlock with no way to leave it, and President Roslin is pushing ahead with Baltar's trial.

Summary
Teaser
*Galen Tyrol, looking haggard, is carrying a baby bottle to his small, but private accommodations for his wife, Cally and their infant son, Nicholas.
*The Tyrols are beginning their day. While Cally was expecting a day off, Galen tells her of needed maintenance on an airlock that cannot wait. Cally is frustrated by Galen's insistance that she assist him instead of enlisting others from the deck crew.
*Admiral William Adama dreams of his late wife, Carolanne, at a home on Caprica. When his quarter's intercom awakens him, Adama's grogginess shows him rising from his bunk, and Carolanne's image appears, asleep, in the bunk as well.
*Colonel Saul Tigh enters with papers to sign for needed maintenance on the ship. The XO notices the empty bunk and is quite aware that today is Adama's wedding anniversary with his wife.
*Private Jaffee arrives to drop off the admiral's coffee, and Adama, deep in thought with memories of his ex-wife, is unable to remember the crewman's name.
*Chief Tyrol arrives in a crew head to talk through the work schedules with his deck crew. He tells Seelix to join the Tyrols at airlock 12, an airlock located on the port aft side of Galactica's "alligator head".
*The Tyrols enter the airlock; equipment and pallets are strewn about, and the observation deck has been unused for over a year. A previous Cylon attack had left this airlock unusable, and minor hull breeches here had been temporarily patched and left for a later repair.
*The Tyrols were to fix the gearing systems of the airlock's doors. As Cally tries to get Galen to discuss their marital problems, specifically Galen's desire to handle workloads as usual despite their marriage, a klaxon activates and the inner airlock doors quickly close. Seelix is confused; she didn't initiate the airlock close. She notifies the Chief of a pressure differential in the compartment; a leak has developed.
*Galen Tyrol, despite Cally's surprise, isn't fazed; he knows that the airlock closure is an automatic safety mechanism. He instructs his wife to search for the leak, knowing that the doors will open once the leak is again patched.

Act 1
*Adama envisions himself at his home on Caprica as Carolanne's image asks him if he is going to continue repeating events to exercise his memory.
*Carolanne's image accuses him of using his position to exalt himself and President Laura Roslin.
*Roslin and Adama meet for a quick briefing. She admits that it could have been over wireless but she had to get off of her ship. Adama explains her mood as being "O.B.E." - overcome by events.
*Roslin suggests that Lee Adama lead the process in organizing the necessary resources for Baltar's trial, noting Lee's past with just causes against the status quo as well as the Adama family history in law. Admiral Adama agrees to ask Lee about the matter.
*Roslin asks to stay aboard Galactica and tells Adama that she is going to the gym. Adama smiles and mentions something about the smell, to which Roslin laughs heartily.
*Pilots conduct their CAP briefing in their ready room, chatting between themselves with some satisfaction that the Cylons haven't been seen for 49 days.
*Helo handshakes Hot Dog, who complains about a strange rash as he scratches near his genitals. Helo smiles and, implying the questionable worthiness of a probable illicit (and inadvisable) sexual union by Hot Dog, wipes his hands on the armrests and moves a seat away from the scratching pilot. As Major Lee Adama steps up to begin his briefing, one last pilot takes the seat next to Helo.
*Major Adama begins his pilot briefing, berating the pilots' celebration. He tells the pilots that the number "1" is all they need to remember, reminding them that it takes only 1 slip-up to begin a major disaster for the Fleet. Admiral Adama is outside of the ready room, and stands quietly and out of eyesight to anyone as he listens, with a faint level of pride appearing on his face, to his son's stern lecture.
*Carolanne's image tells Adama to express his love for Lee as how a father would to his son, not as an Admiral to a Captain.
*Starbuck sticks around for a few seconds after the pilots are dismissed to tease Major Adama about mimicking his father's ultimatum command style. The younger Adama replies that if he has to copy, it should be from the best. Admiral Adama enters the room as Starbuck leaves for her duties.
*Admiral Adama asks his son to head the legal organization processes for Baltar's trial. Major Adama is flattered and will consider the idea. He tells his father that, as a child looking through his grandfather's office and the various books strewn about, he considered a profession as a lawyer amongst his many other career considerations, something that his father never knew. The major notes that his CAG duties are 24/7 as it is, even with the Cylon down time.
*The Tyrols' patching of the breach appears to work initially, but when the pressure test is done, the new patches fail. The leak worsens greatly.

Act 2
*Admiral Adama has been alerted about the worsening airlock emergency with the Tyrols in airlock 12 and makes his way there with Colonel Tigh and their marine escort in tow. He assesses the damage personally and later consults with his command staff in CIC. There is approximately 30 minutes of air in the lock, and the temperature is dropping considerably as frost begins to form inside the airlock.
*Major Adama notes extensive damage in the airlock that has damaged the redundancies that could manually open the door, leaving no way to open it. Tigh suggests blowing the glass in the airlock's observation deck, but Major Adama warns that the reinforced glass is designed to handle a tylium explosion, and that a detonation sufficient to blow the glass would kill the Tyrols as well. Admiral Adama is angered by the lack of options and demands more thought.
*The pilots prep for an extraordinary rescue attempt; to blow the external door, where the Tyrols, exposed to vacuum, will have to leap into Athena's Raptor. Admiral Adama briefs the Tyrols on the plan shortly after the two don emergency breathing gear.
*After retrieving the Tyrols, it will take seven seconds to close the Raptor's external door and another 10 seconds to re-pressurize the rescue vessel.
*Cally is visibly upset after hearing the plan. The Chief asks if a docking collar will be used, to which Adama states in the negative; there is not enough time. The Tyrols try to prep the area so that the evacuation of the airlock will not pummel them or their rescue ship with flying pallets or other equipment.
*Cally Tyrol worries who will take care of their son if things go wrong. Galen suggests that Anastasia Dualla and her husband would be suitable foster parents, but Cally knows of a reputation throughout the Fleet of how orphaned children fare there. Fearing that pilots (with their hazardous life) would leave Nicky orphaned a second time, she asks Admiral Adama to give their son to Susan Deckler, a civilian mother with one daughter.

Act 3
*The Raptor is in position, with Athena as pilot and Apollo and Starbuck inside, ready to catch the two. Apollo warns everyone of shrapnel and other turbulence that will affect the mission.
*Galen Tyrol apologizes to his wife for being selfish in asking her to join him in the repair. The order was his way of wanting to have her companionship. He instructs her to hold tight as they prepare to leave the airlock.
*Admiral Adama orders the door blown. The Tyrols are flung from the airlock and the Raptor manages to fend off debris from the door, catch the entwined Tyrols, then re-pressurize. Apollo notes the Tyrols are in rough shape but alive.
*Later, Admiral and Major Adama talk about Carolanne, who haunts the elder Adama's memory, accusing him of never being there, able to lead men but not his own family.
*Lee Adama tells his father that, after their divorce, Carolanne made many promises that she didn't keep, particularly once she took to drinking. Over time, she wouldn't apologize for her neglect in fulfilling the promises. The young Adama believes that, despite his love of his mother, he did not believe that she truly loved his father.

Act 4
*Seelix arrives in sickbay with baby Tyrol in her arms after retrieving him from day care. Galen Tyrol is in a bunk, resting, but exerts himself to stand and hold his son. He tells Seelix that Cally will be fine, although Dr. Cottle notes it will be some time before she is up to full strength. He slowly walks to Cally, who is recuperating inside a hyperbaric chamber to treat the effects of vacuum exposure.
*Cally Tyrol awakens to glimpse at her family. Her eyes show distress from the vacuum and she is too weak to smile, but holds her hand to the interior window. Galen presses his son's hand to the glass; Admiral Adama is nearby and has watched the entire event.
*Major Adama returns to his quarters to find his wife resting. She points to a box that his father had shipped to his quarters; the young Adama facetiously asks if the box is ticking. On inspecting it, he finds a library of Caprican criminal law books, the same ones he looked at from his grandfather's collection. The admiral leaves a note for his son.
*Admiral Adama completes yet another meeting with Laura Roslin. Adama steers the conversation back to New Caprica, specifically, their time together during then-President Baltar's groundbreaking ceremony and party. Roslin admits to feeling a little silly that evening.
*Adama fondly recalls her red dress and the good feelings each had that day. When Roslin laughs, Adama tells her how happy it is to see her do so. He asks her, if the Cylons hadn't attacked, if she would have built that cabin in the woods that she wanted.
*Roslin temporarily evades the question by answering that Baltar's inept leadership and New Caprica's terrain would have prevented such a building, but is pleased by Adama's attention. She asks if he would have stayed on Galactica or eventually settled himself, to which Adama evades an answer by stating that their questions were all hypothetical in any case.
*Adama, with a smile, states that the two of them have "certain responsibilities," apparently attempting to return a professional distance to what was becoming a very intimate conversation. Roslin replies, with another smile, to the affirmative.
*As she begins to leave, she tells Adama that, in a few days, she'll return to the battlestar, where they can continue their conversation and reminisce of their brief time on New Caprica and its possibilities. As she crosses the hatchway, Roslin tells Adama that she would have definitely built her cabin if time and circumstance would have allowed.
*Adama returns to his quarters, holding his wedding picture. He returns it to its storage until next year.

Bonus Scene
*The complete bonus scene (which was available on the Sci Fi Channel web site for U.S. viewers after the episode) takes place just before Colonel Tigh visits Admiral Adama's quarters at the start of the episode.
*Lieutenants Felix Gaeta and Anastasia Dualla walk towards Adama's quarters for signatures of maintenance orders as part of their daily briefing. As he makes some notes on the orders, Gaeta volunteers the observation that President Roslin and Adama have had many meetings together recently.
*When Dualla asks what he's implying, Gaeta suggests that there might be something more intimate going on between the senior Fleet leadership. Dualla grimaces at the possibility, replying that the idea of Roslin and Adama together in her head was not a particularly desirable one to imagine.
*When the two think deeply and briefly of the two commanders together, both begin to laugh, and continue to do so when Colonel Tigh intercepts them and asks what was so funny.
*The two formally note their briefing, but Tigh takes the folder to deliver himself and dismisses the two back to CIC. Dualla and Gaeta's composure fails as they turn to CIC and begin laughing uncontrollably as Tigh heads to his friend's quarters, which connects to the original scene of his arrival.

Questions
* Since it is not connected to the larger port flight pod and its hangar deck, what would airlock 12 normally be used for?
* Was Carolanne Adama's only wife? Was she the same wife whose father had the connections that allowed Adama to be re-enlisted into the fleet?
* Will the potential romance between Roslin and Adama be consummated or left as a "what could have been" scenario?
* How many different types of court and law codes are there within the Colonies? Is there not a unified "Federal" equivalent set of laws that could be used for Baltar's trial?
* Will Lee take on the position offered by Roslin?
* Is Helo no longer in charge of taking care of living arrangements for "Dogville"?
* Will Galactica ever be able to fight up to the capacity as she did during the Battle of New Caprica?
* Is there any greater significance to Hotdog's rash?

Analysis
* The argument referenced in "Taking a Break From All Your Worries" between the Tyrols focuses on how Chief Tyrol acts as is nothing has changed since marrying Cally, particularly as he ignores his family's needs over the needs of his job. Cally, on the other hand, is concerned about Nicky, and has apparently gone to great lengths to think about his future, notably when Cally asks Admiral Adama to give Nicky to a civilian family whom she knows.
* There was much patchwork done to Galactica after the Battle of New Caprica. Colonel Tigh notes that Galactica would need six weeks in dry dock "just for the dents", making it sound likely that Galactica would not survive another battle like New Caprica.
* The cinematic flashbacks or imaginary melding of Adama's memories of Carolanne, including recollections or imaginings of sitting with her and touching her, and what he believed she would say in the various situations of the day were curiously similar to how Gaius Baltar imagines his virtual Number Six. However, Adama's likelihood of being a Cylon are practically refuted by the existence of his memories (as well as two characters, Lee Adama and Saul Tigh, who also share in the same memories).
* Through his internal conversations / arguments with Carolanne, it appears Adama has regrets with his decision to marry her. The regret has become a nagging question and buffer on his ability to make decisions and to not question them.
* Carolanne appears to have been an undiagnosed/untreated bipolar schizophrenic and an alcoholic. Once divorced and left raising her two sons, she fell into heavy drinking and was clinically depressed for several years, apparently with bouts of anger/violence.
* Dealing with Carolanne's personality defects most likely gave the Admiral insights into dealing with Colonel Tigh's alcoholism.

Notes
* "A Day in the Life" is also the title of a song by The Beatles. It is not known whether this has any particular meaning to the episode.

* There are two births that occurred between "The Woman King" and "A Day in the Life", as the population count after "The Woman King" was 41,396.

* A day care center exists on Galactica.

* Number Six (Tricia Helfer) and Gaius Baltar (James Callis) do not appear in any scene in this episode.

* The set used for the airlock - in particular the observation booth - is the same as for the launch tubes.

* In reality, humans have been exposed to near-vacuum conditions for up to thirty seconds without permanent injury. Some sources state that survival is possible for up to two minutes, but the injury the body sustains becomes severe after approximately one minute of exposure. The biggest danger is damage to the lungs, as the sudden pressure differential can burst the alveoli. That is why a person should exhale and not hold their breath.

* When Apollo uses his watch to time the hatch on Athena's Raptor, it makes a beep in the manner of a digital stopwatch. However, the watch in question, inherited from Barry Garner in "The Captain's Hand", is an analog device.

Noteworthy Dialogue
Official Statements
Information from the podcast:

* Carolanne's name was originally Caroline. RDM and the other editors in the podcast note that the change occurred when Olmos used the name Carolanne instead of Caroline. Ever since, Adama's wife has been called Carolanne by the staff.
Overview
:The Cylons have begun the brutal crackdown on New Caprica's Resistance movement. Tyrol receives disturbing news from a secret source within Baltar's administration while Colonial detainees face a Cylon firing squad on New Caprica. With time running out for the colonists, Admiral Adama will launch his rescue attempt with only the battlestar Galactica, while his son, Commander Lee Adama, and the battlestar Pegasus remain to protect what is left of the human fleet and continue the search for Earth if the rescue fails.

Summary
*The final moments of "Precipice" are reshown as the captured detainees are being taken off the trucks. Cally Tyrol is freed, as the Centurions march up the hill. Tyrol continues to run as gunfire is heard. As the screen goes to black, the words "One Hour Earlier" are displayed.
*Galen Tyrol is frantically talking with Saul Tigh about a list of detainees he received from his source, Cally Tyrol is among the listed. Tigh snaps him back to his senses, noting that they can locate the people now that they cracked the Cylons' coordinate system.
*Chief Tyrol immediately gets to work, succesfully calculating the location of the execution, and gathers a team to rescue Cally and the others.
*Tyrol's team, including Seelix, is able to catch up with the Cylons, and get in position as Cally Tyrol starts running. Tyrol rushes out and gets his wife out of the line of fire, as his team takes out the Centurions meant to execute the detainees. Others injured include some members of the NCP and the Cavil that accompanies the truck.
*Seelix leaves a wounded Cavil to death. After he downloads into a new body, the Cavil reports that he ended his own life, but is somewhat traumatized from the transfer process.
*At Breeders Canyon, similar to the scene at the Pergamus Flats, a flashback shows how marines move into position to defend the meeting there against a possible attack.

*Sharon Agathon moves ahead to meet with Anders and the resistance. As Agathon and Anders discuss their plans, the Centurions attack, taking out some of the resistance fighters, but are soon destroyed by a marine RPG.
*After the attack, a map is recovered from one of the 'skinjobs'. Anders recognizes it as the hand-drawn map passed on to Ellen Tigh to destroy in the heating fire within their tent. Anders immediately suspects Tigh in tipping off the Cylons.
*While sleeping in her bed on Colonial One, Number Three dreams of a tent near some odd rock edifices. The next image is of her holding Hera. She wakes up suddenly.
*Also on Colonial One, Gaius Baltar and Caprica-Six lie together in bed, but Baltar is fighting with impotence. Six is understanding, but Baltar shrugs off her sympathy.
*Kara Thrace is showing further affection for Kacey and apologizes for her getting hurt. Leoben Conoy watches from the background.
*Distrubed by her dream, Three visits Selloi, a human oracle whose tent she saw in her dream, who tells her that Hera is still alive, but warns that holding the child will undo all that the Cylons have accomplished on the planet.
*On Galactica, a combined crew of Pegasus and Galactica crews ready for the rescue mission. Margaret Edmondson conducts a ceremony to bind the people together, given the odds of the mission.
*William and Lee Adama have a farewell of their own when Commander Adama leaves Galactica for Pegasus, with orders to wait 18 hours for Galacticas return. Otherwise, Pegasus must continue the search for Earth with the surviving members of the Fleet.
*Three inquires with Dr. Cottle, who is treating a Five wounded by a human attack, about Hera's alleged death. She points out that it didn't make much sense for him to simply cremate the first ever human/Cylon hybrid, something that no one had ever seen before, without studying it first. Cottle states that it was President Roslin's decision.
*Laura Roslin orders Anders to guard Maya and Hera at all costs. He tasks two of his best men to protect her and see to her safe escape.
*Gunnery Sergeant Erin Mathias, the leader of Agathon's Marines, meets with Roslin, Tom Zarek and the resistance to discuss the rescue plan. She brings weapons for the upcoming fight and learns that the colonists conducted evacuation exercises under the guise of fire drills.
*A Cavil voices his despair at the continued bloodshed, Baltar agrees. Many of the Cylons disagree significantly as to what to do to reestablish control. A Number Five says that, if the worse comes to worst, that they can just nuke the city.
*Saul Tigh learns of his wife's betrayal and is visibly shocked by it.
*Sharon Agathon heads into the New Caprica Detention Center and gets the launch keys for the Colonial ship. Three enters the secured room, immediately recognizes her, stops Agathon and tells her that her daughter is alive. Unwilling to consider this matter for now, Agathon shoots the Three in the legs: "Adama wouldn't lie to me."
*Galactica is given word that the launch keys have been retrieved, and after a rousing speech by Admiral Adama, begins preparations for the jump to New Caprica.

Questions
*Roslin and Zarek seem to have reconciled their differences and become friends. Given Saul Tigh's feeling that Roslin will resume the Presidency once humanity has left New Caprica, and that Zarek used to be Baltar's vice president, will he assume the mantle of vice president under Laura Roslin?
**Or, will Zarek claim the presidency by legal succession if Baltar is removed from office?
*A Cavil mentions that he has different sensations after each download. He suffers a slight headache after the first and, after the third, a sensation like a white hot poker inside his skull. Is there damage to the consciousness during each downloading and is there a point where after so many downloads the consciousness is destroyed or corrupted?
**In the podcast for this episode, Ronald D. Moore reveals that the intent of Cavil's description was to show that there is a "cost" associated with downloading.
***Although Cylon Raiders are not sentient to same degree as humanoid Cylons, Sharon Agathon describes a similar traumatizing after repeated deaths of the berserking Raider known as Scar.
***Number Three had commented in "Downloaded" on feeling refreshed like starting a new life when describing her download experience. Caprica-Six expressed adjustment issues, including her visions of Gaius Baltar.
****Number Three also said that following her first download she was klutzy for a time and frequently knocked things over or tripped.
*Are the Lords of Kobol real? Why are they sending accurate dreams to a Cylon? Why is a human oracle helping Three interpret the dreams?
**The gods are "real," at least as historical entities that lived on Kobol, a fact that even the Cylons acknowledge. The Cylons (and a number of Colonials) dispute their actual divinity. The Colonials appear to have some foresight from the gods through their oracles. The connection of the Lords of Kobol to the Cylons is a curious (and unexplained) event in the case of the dreams of Number Three.
*Why does Doctor Cottle work to heal critically injured Cylons instead of just letting them die and be resurrected?
**The Cylons might want to minimize the trauma of downloading into a new body, although comments from Number Three to Cottle dispute this.
**Cottle is a physician, and has likely taken a vocational pledge to aid. Allowing a sentient being to die, regardless of their ideology, is breaching this oath through omission of action. He helped Sharon Agathon through her pregnancy for similar reasons.
***At least in TV drama, doctors in wartime have an affinity for helping everyone. There are plenty of M*A*S*H episodes that illustrate this.
*Where is "Download City"?
**It is possible that Seelix's use of the phrase "Download City" is merely a euphemism for the download process the humanoid Cylon models go through.
**Download City may also be a reference to a downloading facility present on New Caprica.
***The Cylons would likely keep such a facility hidden to all humans on the planet, no matter what their relationship is to the Cylon occupation. The destruction by suicide or planted bomb of a download facility on New Caprica would spell real death for all agents there if Basestars aren't actually used for this purpose (this isn't likely, else the Resurrection Ship would not have been protected by Basestars).
****According to Bradley Thompson on Battlestar Wiki:Official Communiques, Download City is simply Seelix's slang for whereever Cylon's go when they resurrect.
*Is there any possibility at all that Adama wasn't aware of Roslin's plans for Hera? (Answer)
**There are no direct indications that Adama is aware of Roslin's conspiracy regarding the baby. Given the positive changes in his relationship with Sharon Agathon, that seems to now be based on complete mutual trust, it is unlikely that he would keep such a profound secret from her, if he was aware of it.
**Additionally, Adama was quite direct with Helo regarding the plans to abort the child. Whatever his relationship with Sharon, it seems unlikely that Adama would rob Helo of his paternal rights in this way, particularly after Helo brings up their respective fatherhood.
**Dr. Cottle is a military officer and his actions would have to have been cleared through Adama. There may well be other reasons why Agathon wasn't told, including keeping the information from the Cylons in the event she was captured or downloaded.
***In military parlance, the president's authority supersedes that of an admiral, and a military officer does not need to report back to his commanding officer orders that originated from the president.
****However, Adama and Roslin agreed that all military matters rested with the Admiral, whereas Roslin was the civilian leader of the fleet. It stands to reason that Adama would have known.
*****That unofficial agreement was broken in "Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I" and there is no indication that they have restored it.
**The expression on Adama's face during his conversation with Sharon Agathon in "Occupation" suggests that he is aware of the conspiracy regarding Hera.
***Said expression may also be a reference to his guilt over the whole situation with Sharon Agathon/Boomer/Number Eight in general, and not a specific reference to Hera.
*What other operations are the Cylons busy with elsewhere in the universe, that are straining their resources for their experiment on New Caprica (also referenced to by Ron Moore in his podcast)?
*Will some humans refuse to leave once the escape begins?
*Will the escapees block proven or suspected collaborators from boarding the escaping ships?
**How many, if any, of the New Caprica Police are publicly known, and once the escape begins, what will be their ultimate fate?
*Adama's plan to use only Galactica and the ships remaining on the ground on New Caprica seems a bit unrealistic given the fact that there are over 39,000 colonists on the planet. How will they find room for all of the evacuees?
**It is very reasonable to assume that the carrying capacity of the ships approximates the number of people on the planet, since it is very resource-intensive to move people around in the Battlestar Galactica universe. The attrition suffered by the Colonials only improves this probability.
**Will the Colonials find time to also evacuate much of their critically-rationed supplies and equipment as well as themselves during the chaos of evacuation?
*Is Maya suspicious about Roslin's protectiveness of her and Isis?
**As mentioned in "Downloaded", Isis is said to have been a child given up by a senior ranking officer for political reasons. Maya may have been told that Isis, should she be captured, would make for a very valuable kidnapping asset, given her (supposed) parentage.
*What exactly has Caprica-Six given up for Gaius?
**To an extensive degree, Caprica is mistrusted by the other Cylons and while not thought to be a traitor per se, is probably considered a Quisling. This is what she may have meant.
* After Helo departs Admiral Adama's room after indicating that Sharon has the launch keys, Adama punches his desk, seemingly in frustration. Given that it is great news that Sharon has the keys and that they can now begin the rescue operation, why does Adama show anger/frustration? Is it his guilt over not being able to tell Helo and Sharon, who now has again proven her loyalty, that their daughter is alive?
** It can also be interpreted as Adama using the good news to break through the anger and frustration built up over the past several weeks of partly unsuccessful planning and training missions and not being able to do anything at the moment. Punching his desk can signify both anger and elation at the same time.
* If Cylon 'skinjobs' can share memories and experiences as implied in many previous episodes, why would Sharon believe that merely shooting Three in the knees would be sufficient to stop her warning the others?
** The sharing of memories and experiences may require access to a Cylon data port, instead of being a wireless process.

Analysis
* The Number Three that has been having dreams about Hera saw Sharon Agathon and was able to tell that she was the copy that had been left with Helo on Caprica. She may have deduced this from the fact that Sharon was taking the launch keys, or she may have been able to sense her identity somehow.
* Roslin's line about Hera, "She may well be the shape of things to come", echoes similar lines by Six in "Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II" and by Adama in "Valley of Darkness". "The Shape of Things to Come" is also the title of the orchestral music piece at the end of "Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II".
*Anders seems to know, or at least suspect, what is so special about Maya's child.
*Caprica-Six has been redownloaded after her "death" in Precipice. She was not "boxed".
*The Cylons on New Caprica appear to not have any sort of attachment to the humans they rule as evidenced by their willingness to just nuke the colony if they can't make it work as desired. This conflicts with the decision that their earlier attempt at genocide was a mistake. This is additional evidence of fundamental contradictions and disconnects within the Cylon psyche that they are blind to. Based on their actions to date, skinjob behavior tends toward the sociopathic with the exception of Boomer, Sharon, and Caprica-Six.
*Baltar has become a suicidal drunk - his appearance has become slovenly and he appears to have given up on basic grooming. He is also having trouble performing the act of sex with Caprica-Six.
*Admiral Adama's claim that his crew "will find immortality as only the Gods once knew" draws on the choice given to Achilles by his mother about joining the war in Troy: fight couragously and perish in battle, or be forgotten by history. Achilles chose to go to battle and is a legend. Adama's use of that theme strengthens the case for a link between the Twelve Colonies and the bronze-age Hellenistic culture of real Earth.
**Bradley Thompson and David Weddle deliberately draw inspirations from ancient stories like Homer's Iliad. Such references do not indicate whether there is such a link.
*There is a discontinuity between "Precipice" and this episode regarding the execution scene. First, Cally apparently changed direction between episodes for more dramatic effect. At the conclusion of "Precipice", Cally is shown jumping into a gully to the "left" of where the trucks are stopped, and is apparently shown running "down," toward the initial camera position. The camera shoots Cally from her right as she runs, showing a backdrop of trees and vines. In "Exodus, Part I", she is shown running to the "right," towards Tyrol and the other resistance fighters. The camera here is also from Cally's right, but this time she is running in front of a barren background. Secondly, the gunfire starts at a different time. At the conclusion of "Precipice", Cally is clearly shown running while the gunfire begins. In "Exodus, Part I", Tyrol throws her to the ground before it does.

Notes
* There is also a comic called Exodus!, which covers the events of the Original Series' episode, "Saga of a Star World" (Part 2).
* This is the first episode where viewers have seen an oracle. Oracles such as Pythia and Galen Tyrol's mother have been mentioned but not seen.
* Tyrol inexplicably lost his beard before this episode. This was necessary because Aaron Douglas's scenes were shot weeks after the main part of the episode, when he had already shaved and it was felt that a fake beard would not be convincing.
*Chamalla is a bitter herb, and oracles sometimes use candy to sweeten it up.
*

Noteworthy Dialogue
*As Chief Tyrol is about to leave Tigh's tent:
:Colonel Tigh: Chief! Pull it together.. You won't do her any good if you get caught too.. Besides, the last thing your son wants is me and Ellen for parents..

*Before Lee Adama departs Galactica:
:Admiral William Adama: I'll see you at the rendezvous point.
:Commander Lee Adama: Eighteen hours. Try not to be late.
:William Adama: I'm getting old; I'm a little slow, but I'll be there.
:Lee Adama: Gods, I wish I could talk you out of this...
:William Adama: You can't. You tried.
:Lee Adama: You know, Dad, um...
:William Adama: Don't. Don't make me cry on my own hangar deck.

*During the Salt Line Ceremony on the hangar deck:
:Margaret "Racetrack" Edmondson: Their enemies will divide them, their colonies broken in the fiery chasm of space. The shining days renounced by a multitude of dark sacrifices. Yet still they will remain. Always together.

*As Galactica prepares to return to New Caprica:
:Admiral Adama: This is the Admiral. You've heard the news. You know the mission. You should also know that there is only one way that this mission ends, and that's with the successful rescue of our people off of New Caprica. Look around you. Take a good look at the men and women that stand next to you. Remember their faces, for one day you will tell your children and your grandchildren that you served with such men and women as the universe has never seen. And together you accomplished a feat that will be told and retold down through the ages, and find immortality as only the Gods once knew. I'm proud to serve with you. Good hunting.

Overview
:After the suicide bombing, the Cylons institute stricter controls on the human population on New Caprica. Aboard Galactica, plans for the rescue from New Caprica move forward now that communication with the resistance has been established.

Summary
*Gaius Baltar ostensibly has Laura Roslin detained in a cell. He discusses the suicide bombings, after which he releases her.
*After Duck's suicide bombing in an effort to kill Baltar, the Cylons round up random civilians, including Cally Tyrol.
*The Leoben copy that has imprisoned Kara Thrace introduces her to Kacey, supposedly another Cylon-human hybrid fertilized by this Cylon's consciousness and using Thrace's egg from her stolen ovary. Thrace immediately treats her as an "it."
*Felix Gaeta continues to give information to the resistance, although Galen Tyrol is unaware that Gaeta is his source. Tyrol believes Gaeta is a collaborator.
*Tyrol talks to Jammer about the situation with his wife, believing that people such as himself and Jammer will be lauded, while people like Gaeta will be strung up, causing feelings of regret in Jammer for his secret Cylon collaboration as an NCP member.
*Jammer asks Boomer to release Cally Tyrol from prison. Boomer claims bureaucracy prevents her, but later visits Tyrol. Their history only makes matters worse.
*Admiral Adama swears in Sharon Agathon as a Colonial officer and sends her to New Caprica as the resistance liaison. Commander Lee Adama objects to most of the plan, and is generally ignored by the planning team.
*Later, Commander Adama tries to convince his father that risking what's left of mankind to save those on New Caprica wasn't a call the admiral could make. Admiral Adama tells his son that he can stay with the Fleet with Pegasus on guard, but that he and Galactica must try to rescue the New Capricans.
*Saul Tigh, Chief Tyrol, and Samuel Anders decide to meet Agathon at Breeders Canyon.
*Ellen Tigh, threatened with more harm to her husband, tips off the Cylons to the rendezvous.
*Another damaging suicide bombing moves the Cylons to more drastic actions.
*The Cylons force Baltar to sign an execution order, at gunpoint, for 200 civilians, including Cally Tyrol, Roslin and Tom Zarek. Caprica-Six is shot by a Five while protesting against the order. The detainees are transported outside the city.
*Kara Thrace continues to ignore Kacey in the apartment. When Thrace leaves to another room, she returns to find the child motionless in a pool of blood.
*As Kacey awakens in a hospital, Thrace is overjoyed, and takes Conoy's hand.
*After the truck of detainees stops and releases the prisoners to "stretch their legs," a masked Jammer cuts Cally Tyrol's bonds and tells her to run. As as she gets away, Cylon Centurions appear to execute the detainees.
*Zarek pulls Roslin away from the front of the crowd.
*As Cally Tyrol runs through the forest, the sound of automatic gunfire rings out.
*After Sharon Agathon and Anders' teams meet and formulate their plans, they are soon ambushed by Centurions.

Questions
*If Sharon Agathon is killed during her mission on New Caprica, will she be able to download into a new body?
*Given that she was ordered to face execution by the Colonial Government, where would Cally Tyrol be able to run to? (Answer)
*Why did the Cylons abandon their plan for a public execution?
*If viewers are to assume that the gunfire at the end of the episode is not from the Centurions, then who is firing? (Answer)
*Is Gaeta showing rather unusual behavior? If so, how much will his role as "inside man" be affected?
*What is the role of the five unseen Cylon models in the occupation? Are they present and simply remaining off-camera for the benefit of the audience? Have they attempted to hide themselves from the Colonials? (Answer)
*Why do none of the Leoben Conoy copies attend the meeting on Colonial One regarding the execution order?
*Cally Tyrol and Sharon Agathon both took their husbands' names upon marriage, as did Ellen Tigh, Caroline Adama and Sesha Abinell. Are Anastasia Dualla and Kara Thrace now Anastasia Adama, and Kara Anders, respectively? (Answer regarding Kara Thrace)
*What is the relationship between Caprica-Six's shooting and the reappearance of Baltar's Internal Six?
*On the topic of internal manifestations, what happened to Caprica-Six's Internal-Baltar? Will he ever show himself again? Has he disappeared much like his counterpart in Baltar, now that the real-world Baltar is in Caprica-Six's midst?
*Now that the Lt. Sharon Agathon has landed on the surface of New Caprica, how can she be distinguished from other Number Eights there? (Answer)
*How will humans identify Sharon Agathon should she ever leave their sight? How, for example, can she safely return to Galactica? (Answer)
*How did Jammer identify the particular Eight he talked to as "Boomer?"
*If the Centurions are incapable of distinguishing between individual copies of a model, why would they fire on Sharon Agathon, who should be just another Eight to them? (Answer)
*Why didn't Duck tell Tyrol that Jammer had joined the New Caprica Police?
*Did Kacey fall down the stairs or was she pushed?
*As Zarek wanted nothing to do with Baltar's puppet administration, who replaced him as Vice President? (Answer)
*Given Zarek's imprisonment for four months, what of Zarek's various supporters? Do they still exist on New Caprica or in the Fleet? If so, what of them?
*What of the Demand Peace movement?
*Is Kacey all that Leoben Conoy claims her to be? (Answer)
*Since Felix Gaeta is one of the top people in the Baltar administration (indeed, Baltar's staff seems to consist primarily of Felix Gaeta) and was once a Colonial officer, why doesn't Tyrol consider the possibility that Gaeta may be his inside source?

Analysis
*Apparently a single Cylon agent copy can speak for his or her particular model. Interestingly, Caprica-Six fails to dissuade her "sisters" from voting to execute the dissidents.
**This consensus within the copies is done invisibly. Similar communication between Cylons of a single model has been witnessed in several prior episodes:
***In "The Farm", the copy of Simon which Kara Thrace encounters outside the facility shares the memories of the one she has recently killed, although insufficient time has passed for a resurrection of the type witnessed in "Downloaded".
***In "Home, Part II", Caprica-Valerii reveals to Galen Tyrol that she has some of the Boomer copy's memories.
***At the start of "Occupation", the Cavil model interrogating with Saul Tigh knows of Ellen's work to free him.
**This contact is apparently strictly voluntary. According to Caprica-Sharon in "Home, Part I", "I'm not wired in. It doesn't work like that," and her presence on New Caprica is not considered a security hazard.
*As one of the Cavils notes, adherence to the Cylon creed has become increasingly perfunctory. The Cylons seek the President's signature as a mere formality.
*If Leoben Conoy's story is true, Kacey can't be older than 16 months.
*As Ellen Tigh's actions seem as reprehensible as ever, her motivations this time around are rather more laudable. These two episodes seem to indicate that she truly does care for her husband.
*Cavil informs Ellen Tigh that they released Saul Tigh so that he may continue leading the resistance, thereby ensuring attacks against the Cylons, such as the two bombings that followed his release. These bombings and their results reinforce Cavil's argument that instilling fear and exerting total control over the population is the only viable solution.
**It also might be possible that the release of Tigh might play into the faction of Cylons who continue to hold a strong prejudice towards humans. Caprica-Six and Boomer are clearly shown to be a diminishing voice amongst the Cylon leadership as evidenced when Number Five shot Caprica-Six in the head. This faction of Cylons may very well be attempting to destroy the experiment that Caprica-Six and Boommer convinced the Cylon population to undergo.
*The Cylons' condemnation to suicide bombings is strikingly hypocritical, in light of the fact that a Number Five used the same tactic after boarding Galactica in "Litmus."
*Following the bombing of the power station, the Cylon leadership conducts a meeting with Gaius Baltar on Colonial One. The camera makes a full clockwise sweep, revealing in order:
**An Eight
**Boomer
**A Cavil
**A Five
**A Three
**Caprica-Six
**Another Cavil
**Another Three (identifies herself as the one killed by Caprica-Six in "Downloaded")
**A Simon
**Another Five
**Two more Sixes
*Cavil introduces the idea of "stronger measures". Assenting, in order, are the second Three, Simon, the second Five, and the last two Sixes. Caprica-Six dissents. Neither Boomer nor the other Eight are consulted. Not present are any copies of Leoben Conoy nor any of the unrevealed five models.

Notes
*"Occupation/Precipice" was awarded the IGN.com Editor's choice award, following a review in which it recieved a rating of 10/10.
*"Occupation" and "Precipice" were edited as one 2-hr episode with only one introduction. However, in the podcast, Ronald D. Moore indicates the "beginning" of "Precipice" as the scene with Baltar and Roslin in the detention cell.
*In the podcast, Ronald D. Moore states that references to "The Twist" and "The Swirl" are a homage to Seinfeld. The episode in question is "The Fusilli Jerry."
*Felix Gaeta's given name, first revealed in "Final Cut", is spoken out loud for the first time.
*Caprica-Valerii has married Karl Agathon and taken his last name. She continues to be confined to her cell, but it has been decorated and furnished. Ironically enough, she still calls him "Helo."
*Sharon Agathon and William Adama have continued to develop the rapport which they established in "Resurrection Ship, Part II".
*Number Three's claim that Caprica-Six's assault on her was the first case of Cylon-on-Cylon violence in their history is false. Boomer destroyed an entire basestar filled with other Number Eights, and there are several other incidents throughout the series.
*Ironically, a Five shoots Caprica-Six in the head shortly after Three's statement. Cavil indicates, however, that she won't be "boxed," as Caprica feared in "Downloaded".
*The same Number Three consciousness that is killed in "Downloaded" by Caprica-Six is present as well, referencing the incident; it is this same Three who questions Six regarding her love of Baltar.
*The apparent shooting of the captives at the end of the episode is a homage to The Great Escape and Battle of the Bulge; especially the latter as it features a survivor's escaping in a similar manner to Cally Tyrol's.
*Baltar's Internal-Six appears only after Caprica-Six is shot in the head.
*This episode has the second highest number of guest stars. Only the Miniseries had more credited stars.
*Lee Adama stated that there were about 2000 civilians that were on board Fleet ships when they escaped New Caprica, which would mean that after accounting for an unspecified number of military personnel (and an unspecified number of said personnel that were left on New Caprica), at least 5500 people were killed in the destruction of Cloud 9 as well as the other ships destroyed by the nuclear warhead in "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II".
*Another four humans are killed in the suicide bombing at the power substation this episode. It is unknown whether or not this figure includes the bomber. Additionally, 23 Cylons are critically wounded; 14 of them are euthanized. Almost half the city is left without power, with repair estimates standing at a minimum of two weeks.
*We finally learn the role of Tom Zarek in the Baltar administration: he was indeed Baltar's running mate, and was elected Vice President in "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II". (This was implied in the last three episodes of season two, but not stated explicitly). He refused to be party to the Cylon occupation and was detained shortly thereafter, until his execution was ordered in this episode.
*This is the first time all seven currently known Cylon models have appeared in an episode together. However, only six of them are seen together as Leoben only appears in scenes with Starbuck.

Noteworthy Dialogue
*Discussing suicide bombings:
:Galen Tyrol: This is crazy. You know, we need to figure out whose side we're on.
:Saul Tigh: Which side are we on? We're on the side of the demons, Chief. We are evil men in the gardens of paradise, sent by the forces of death to spread devastation and destruction wherever we go. I'm surprised you didn't know that.

*After being arrested, held without charge and carted to a remote location:
:Tom Zarek: Laura.. That election last year. You tried to steal it, didn't you?
:Laura Roslin: Yes, Tom. I did.
:Tom Zarek: (laughs) Ah... I wish you'd gone through with it.
:Laura Roslin: Me too.

*Talking in a cell:
:Cally: ...frak you Sharon, you stupid frakked-up toaster. How many times do I have to shoot you anyway?

*After being slapped by Roslin for accussing her of working for the Cylons:
:Saul Tigh: You see, little things like that, they don't matter anymore. Fact, not too frakking much really matters anymore. I got one job here, lady, and one job only. To disrupt the Cylons, make them worry about the anthill they stirred up down here so they're distracted and out of position when the old man shows up in orbit. The bombings, they got the Cylons' attention, they really got their attention. And I am not giving that up.
:Laura Roslin: We are talking about people blowing themselves up.
:Tigh: You know, sometimes I think that you've got ice water in those veins. And other times, I think you're just a naive little school teacher. I've sent men on suicide missions in two wars now, and let me tell you something. It don't make a godsdamn bit of difference whether they're riding in a Viper or walking out onto a parade ground. In the end, they're just as dead. (pauses) So, take your piety, and your moralizing, and your high-minded principles, and stick 'em somewhere safe until you're off this rock and sitting in your nice, cushy chair on Colonial One again. (stands) I've got a war to fight (leaves).

*As the Cylons try to force Baltar to sign the execution order, following Number Five's shooting of Capirca-Six in the head:
:Baltar: Oh, God.
:Cavil: She'll be back...
:Cavil: ... but if he pulls that trigger now, you won't.

Overview
:It's been four months since the Cylons occupied the human settlement of New Caprica, and Galactica, Pegasus, and a handful of ships jumped to safety. On New Caprica, a resistance has begun to challenge the Cylons. Aboard Galactica, Admiral Adama struggles with plans for a rescue, having only a handful of untested pilots at his command, understaffed ships, and facing a nearly impossible task.

Summary
*The episode begins with a series of cut scenes. Light flashes over Saul Tigh's face. He is in a prison cell, his missing eye patched over with a gauze bandage, and has scratched notches into a calendar on the wall. His wife, Ellen Tigh, is having sex with one of the Cavils. Laura Roslin lights a candle and prays to the gods. Galen Tyrol and Samuel Anders are planting a bomb using G-4 and an A-type detonator within a building space.
*Kara Thrace is inside a neatly decorated room, setting a table.
*Admiral William Adama tries to strategize a rescue plan with a series of various models of fighters, support vehicles and other civilian ships in the Situation Room's plot table, but becomes frustrated and hurls a model across the table.
*Another Cavil walks into Tigh's cell and taunts him as he attempts to hide the calendar that he has scratched in the wall. A copy of Leoben Conoy walks into the room where Thrace sits at table, carrying her dinner. He sits and prays to "The Heavenly Father."
*Thrace coyly asks the Conoy copy for a knife for her steak, but Conoy takes his knife and cuts her steak himself.
*Tyrol and Anders scatter away as a Heavy Raider lands near their bomb.
*After Ellen Tigh's liaison with her Cavil copy, she asks when will she gets what she asked for, suggesting a previous deal. The Cylon informs her that it should be happening right at that moment. At same time, the Cavil in the cell with Colonel Tigh releases him from prison in a very taunting way. Tigh exits the prison and his wife meets him at the gate.
*A group of 'skinjobs' including at least 3 Eights, 3 Sixes, and 2 Fives approach the Heavy Raider as several 'chromejobs' exit it. Tyrol and Anders set off the bomb. A great explosion ensues that is witnessed by the Conoy copy with Thrace from their apartment. He returns to the table, pushes his knife away from Thrace.
*As he comments on how beautiful she is, Thrace stabs him in the neck with metal chopsticks. As he dies (while Thrace repeatedly stabs his chest for good measure), he tells Thrace that he will see her soon. She tells him to take his time. Then, after wiping her hand on the carpet, she returns to the table and calmly resumes eating dinner.
*Colonel Tigh is running the resistance effort, with Tyrol and Anders acting as his second in command officers.

*Every day a Raptor jumps in and listens for a wireless broadcast. With the list of jamming frequencies provided by Gaeta, Tyrol manages to contact the Colonial Fleet.
* Now having made contact with the Galatica and feeling that rescue may be near Tyrol has second thoughts that a suicide bombing may not be the best course of action, but Tigh disagrees and says to only call off the attack if Baltar will not be attending.
*Baltar decides not to attend the graduation ceremony. Gaeta is unable to signal Tyrol in time of this last-minute change.
*With little left to lose, Duck prays to the gods. He has placed several packs of explosives around his waist, wiring himself as a living bomb. He dons his NCP uniform to attend their graduation ceremony, intending to kill Gaius Baltar and as many traitors and Cylons as he can.
*As a Number Three presents Duck with his graduation certificate he detonates the explosives attached to his body, his last words being "I'll see you soon Nora."

Questions
* How did Anders manage to recover from his pneumonia without the medical supplies Thrace was seeking in "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II"?
* Have Helo and Kat been given the promotions in rank that their new posts would warrant? (Answer: Kat, Answer: Helo)
* When did Number Three "come out" as a Cylon?

Analysis
* Prior to the Cylon occupation, the population of New Caprica City was 39,192. Since that time, there have been at least 43 deaths and 1 birth:
**Nicholas Tyrol was born sometime between "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II" and "Battlestar Galactica: The Resistance".
**There were 10 deaths in "Battlestar Galactica: The Resistance" due to the temple raid, including Nora.
**There were at least 33 deaths in this episode due to the suicide bombing at the NCP graduation ceremony. The figure was supplied by the Cylon leadership, and it is unknown whether they included attacker Tucker Clellan among the casualties.
*However, establishing a current population statistic is impossible due to the long period of time (134 days) elapsed since that figure. There have almost certainly been additional births and deaths for which we are not able to account. Additionally, the status of Kacey remains an open question.
* Several New Capricans appear to have sores or lesions on their faces.
* Near the end of the episode, as Gaeta races to inform the resistance that Baltar won't be attending the graduation, a P.A. system can be heard advertising the New Caprica Medical Center, staffed by "a crack team of human and cylon physicians".
**This may explain Anders's recovery from his pneumonia, seen in "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II".
* During the episode, Conoy mentions that Kara Thrace has succeeded in killing Conoy five times (including the killing that was shown).
* Conoy is obsessed with a future he has "seen" in which Kara falls in love with him. He repeatedly tells Kara that she only needs more time.
* A civilian government appears to be absent in the spaceborne fleet.
* The Cylons have either built a resurrection facility on New Caprica or positioned a Resurrection Ship near enough to the planet for downloads to take place.
**No resurrection ship was seen in orbit when the basestars were shown.
*Only two basestars are seen on screen, yet five are reported back to the Fleet.
**The others could be behind the planet or in another part of sky not shown.
* Number Three allows herself to be seen openly among the Colonials. Presumably the cover of infiltrator D'anna Biers was compromised with the return of Samuel Anders the previous year.
*Although Jammer has been widely speculated to be a Cylon agent due to his pessimistic attitude and unlikely survival during the events of "Valley of Darkness", the events of this episode and comments by Ronald D. Moore seem to preclude the possibility.
**In Battlestar Galactica: The Resistance, a copy of Number Five refers to Jammer as a human.
**In this episode, it is seen that Jammer has joined the New Caprica Police, an exclusively human organization.
**While Jammer's survival of the suicide bombing may seem suspect to some viewers, Moore states that an unfilmed scene was to show him waking up, under bodies, and having to move body parts out of the way ("Precipice", podcast).

Notes
*The episode started off with a warning indicating "Mature Subject Matter" during its initial Sci-Fi Channel United States debut. The following episode, "Precipice", also reiterates this warning.
*"Occupation/Precipice" was awarded the IGN.com Editor's choice award, following a review in which it received a rating of 10/10.
*"Occupation" and "Precipice" is edited as one 2-hr episode with only one intro. However, in the podcast, Ronald D. Moore indicates the "beginning" of "Precipice".
*Ronald D. Moore says in the podcast that alternate scripts included members of the resistance kidnapping humanoid Cylons and keeping them alive in a dungeon. The remaining Cylons would become more apprehensive with each mysterious disappearance.
*Unlike episodes of Season 2, the intro to this episode does not give the survivor count. The population whiteboard present in season 1 & 2 has been replaced by Baltar's presidential portrait.
*The episode opens on the 134th day since the Cylon occupation.
*In her Diary/Journal Roslin notes that it is "Marsday", which is the Roman name for Ares. This is at least the second time that the Roman names for the Greek pantheon have been used.
*Crew changes in the year after settlement glimpsed in "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II" are confirmed here: Helo is serving as XO on Galactica, with Kat as CAG. Dualla, shown for the first time with Lieutenant rank insignia, is serving as XO on Pegasus.
* Lee Adama has gained roughly 40 pounds since the the fleet found New Caprica. The Admiral states that he is soft, both physically and mentally.
* Caprica-Six seems to keep Gaius Baltar company on Colonial One in an unofficial capacity.
* Eight Cylons are visible at the graduation ceremony:
**To the right of the podium: an Eight, a Five, a Six, and a Cavil.
**To the left of the podium: A Six, an Eight, and another Six.
**Speaking: a Three.
*Duck's rank in the NCP is Captain.
*According to RDM's podcast for "Collaborators", Jammer was originally going to be the suicide bomber.
*Kandyse McClure's first name is spelled in the credits as "Candice". Though she has been credited under this name in other projects, this is the first and, so far, only time it has been used for the show.

Noteworthy Dialogue
*After hearing that contact had been established with New Caprica: <br />
:Admiral Adama: It's gonna be okay. It's really gonna be okay. <br />

*During a meeting about the insurgency:
:Number Eight: We're here to find a new way to live in peace, as God wants us to live!
:Cavil: And it's been a fun ride, so far. But I want to clarify our objectives. If we're bringing the word of "God," then it follows we should employ any means necessary to so, any means.
:Another Cavil: Yes. Fear is a key article of faith, as I understand it. So, perhaps it's time to instill a little more fear into the people's hearts and minds. Let's, uh, let's execute Baltar.
:Gaius Baltar: Wha... WHAT?
Overview
:The Cylons have begun a brutal crackdown on New Caprica's nascent human Resistance movement. With time running out for the colonists, Admiral Adama must launch his rescue attempt earlier than he'd expected. But though he expected a fight from the Cylons, he is unprepared for the one he gets from his son, Lee, who refuses to let the battlestar Pegasus join the Galactica's suicidal attack. Tyrol receives disturbing news from a secret source within Baltar's administration while Colonial detainees face a Cylon firing squad on New Caprica.
Overview
:The Cylons have occupied the human settlement of New Caprica, and it's been three months since Galactica, Pegasus, and a handful of ships escaped into deep space. But the fight is not over. On New Caprica, a resistance has begun — and despite having only a handful of untested pilots at his command, Admiral Adama is committed to risking everything on a daring attack to rescue the people he left behind.

Summary
*The episode begins with a series of cut scenes. Light flashes over Saul Tigh's face. He is in a prison cell and has scratched notches into a calendar on the wall.
*A Cavil walks into Tigh's cell and taunts him as he attempts to hide the calendar that he has scratched in the wall.

<blockquote>This is the end of the "FirstLook" sneak peak video provided on the official website of Scifi.com.</blockquote>

Questions
*How did Anders manage to recover from his pneumonia without the medical supplies Thrace was seeking in "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II"?
** It is possible his own bodily defenses fought it off or he received medical supplies from a Cylon.

*Is this episode further evidence that Jammer is another Cylon model? He was standing next to Duck when they assembled for the graduation, and it is unlikely that he would have survived the explosion at such close range.

Analysis
* Given the dialogue during the scene and the marks on Ellen Tigh's face, it appears that Cavil has a penchant for "rough sex," adding to the sacrifice being made by Ellen to free Saul Tigh.
* During the episode, Conoy mentions that Kara has succeeded in killing Conoy five times prior to this airing.

Notes
*Occupation and Precipice is edited as one 2-hr episode with only one intro. However, in the podcast, Ronald D. Moore indicates the "beginning" of Precipice.
*According to David Eick at the BSG Comic-Con panel, "Occupation" takes place 4 months after the Cylon occupation began at the end of "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II".
Questions
*If Sharon Agathon is killed during her mission on New Caprica, will she be able to download into a new body?

*Where will Cally be able to run to? She was ordered to face execution by the Colonial Government.

Analysis
Notes
*Occupation and Precipice is edited as one 2-hr episode with only one intro. However, in the podcast, Ronald D. Moore indicates the "beginning" of Precipice as the scene with Baltar and Roslin in the detention cell.
*In the podcast, Ronald D. Moore states that references to "The Twist" and "The Swirl" are a homage to Seinfeld. The episode in question is "The Fusille Jerry".
*An early publicity photo for this episode shows what is ostensibly Caprica-Valerii being sworn into the Colonial Fleet by Admiral Adama, with Kat and Helo in attendance. This strongly suggests that Valerii has proven her worth and trust to Adama and Galactica--and that available hands are definitely few. It may also confuse viewers as to which Valerii is which, unless Caprica-Valerii chooses a different callsign than "Boomer."
**This is also interesting because of its implications. If Helo is present in his capacity as XO, Kat may be present as CAG. That would make a certain amount of sense; the majority of pilots, including Starbuck, were groundside when the Cylons jumped in, and with her talent and record it would be logical for Kat to rise to the top slot.
*** Kat is indeed the CAG.
*Number Three's claim that Caprica-Six's assault on her was the first case of Cylon-on-Cylon violence in their history is not really true. Sharon Agathon shot and "killed" another Eight outside the Delphi spaceport on Caprica. The Cylons may not look on this in the same light because it was within one model. Alternatively, Number Eight may have been unable to identify her shooter.
**Actually, Sharon Agathon also shot a Six previous to that, but this is most likely not counted as violence because it was arranged as part of the Cylon plan.
