:''For the rank structure of the [[Original Series]], see [[Military Ranks (TOS)]]''
__TOC__
== Rank table ==

This table was originally based on an older blog entry by [[Ronald D. Moore]] posted in 2005, in which he replies to a question about the show's rank structure (see ''[[#Official Statements|Official Statements]]'' below). It has been expanded and altered since that time to include additional ranks that have been established since then (lieutenant colonel, rear admiral) and heavily supplemented by sources close to the show as well as a recently released rank pin chart. It should be noted that some of the ranks on the pin chart are listed differently elsewhere on this page for practical reasons. In some cases this is done because the rank given on the pin chart is assumed to represent a position rather than a specific rank (i.e. the only reference to term senior chief on screen (in "[[Blood on the Scales]]") appears to use it as a position rather than a rank, since only Tyrol hold's the position of senior chief but both he and Peter Laird are chief petty officers) or because the the rank on the pin chart is consistently referred to differently on screen (i.e. crew specialist has always been referred to as specialist).

The ranks are a mix of naval and marine ranks inherited from the [[Battlestar Galactica (TOS)|Original Series]], but mirror naval practices in execution and are elaborated during the series both on-screen and in production notes. It is possible to create a rough equivalence to real world armed forces. However, while the [[Colonial Fleet (RDM)|Colonial Fleet]] has many parallels with modern armed forces it is a fictional organization and diverges from reality in certain places, for example in the duties of commanders and admirals, or the place of the [[CAG]] within the ship's hierarchy.

The officer ranks of the [[Colonial Marine Corps]] (CMC) have yet to be established on screen (with the exception of lieutenant) or by official sources and thus are not listed here. The Marine Corps's enlisted ranks largely mirror real world ranks. <ref name="sfc"/>
| Admiral <ref name="adm">'''Admiral''': [[Peter Corman]] wears the same admiral insignia as Adama and Cain, but with thick gold piping on his duty uniform. This raises the question of how a rear admiral can be distinguished from a full admiral in dress uniform, given that dress uniforms have no colored piping. It can be speculated that, as has been the case with the ranks of ensign and junior lieutenant, the production crew uses the same insignia for both admiral ranks, as only one type of admiral pin has been made for the show. It would normally be expected that different admiral grades would be distinguished by the number of gold bars (for example one set for a rear admiral, etc).</ref>||
| Rear Admiral <ref name="ra">'''Rear Admiral''':
*In the [[Pegasus (Extended Version)|extended version]] of the episode "Pegasus", Adama states "Fleet promoted her to rear admiral over half of the commanders on the list.", thus establishing this rank.
*When Adama is promoted to admiral in "[[Resurrection Ship, Part II]]" his new rank insignia are identical to Cain's.
*Cain seems to command both her battlestar and its [[Battlestar Group]]. In modern practice, a captain (the real-world rank most similar to the colonial rank of commander) commands only the ship, while an admiral is in charge of the Carrier Strike Group and is often on the same ship as a captain.
*While Cain wears a regular rear admiral's duty uniform with gold-over-silver piping, Adama continues to wear his commander's duty uniform with red-over-gold piping after his promotion to admiral. From a production point of view, this was most likely done so that the crew didn't have to create a new set of uniforms for the actor, but can be explained in-universe by a lack of male admiral uniforms in the Fleet's stores following the attack on the Twelve Colonies. Similarly, Hoshi also wears his lieutenant's duty uniform with one line of solid white pipping after his promotion to admiral.
| Lieutenant Colonel <ref name="LtCol">'''Lieutenant Colonel''':
*This information [[Sources:Jack Fisk|comes from production materials]], which note [[Jack Fisk]]'s rank as lieutenant colonel in the portions of "[[Razor]]" before [[Jurgen Belzen]] is executed. Fisk wears different rank insignia from the normal colonel insignia, as seen [[:Image:Fisk LtCol insignia 1.jpg|here]] and [[:Image:Fisk LtCol pin 2.jpg|here]].
*These devices have been previously used for [[Anastasia Dualla|Dualla]] in "[[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]", but she is identified as a lieutenant in dialog. Insiders have indicated that Dualla's use of the lieutenant colonel insignia was a costuming error/necessity, that was necessitated during her first appearances after becoming an officer because there weren't enough junior lieutenant devices to go around. It has also been noticed that other characters including Chief Tyrol have used them from time to time for the same reason.
*Fisk's uniform piping as a lieutenant colonel is the same red-over-white as on a full colonel's uniform. Given that he is the only person ever even referred to as holding that rank, it is likely safe to assume that lieutenant colonel and colonel share the same colors. This is unusual in that all other senior officers' uniforms have distinctive piping, but can be explained by their potentially similar duties. However, this may - like the use of some rank devices - be a production necessity: It was far easier to use the actor's existing uniform than create a new one (Fisk's first appearance took place within the show's timeline after he had already been promoted to full colonel as Razor was filmed in between that season and the following one.</ref> ||
This may have been an intentional decision to denote her position as ''Pegasus''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s XO, or just a costuming error.</ref>, Lee Adama (Season 2.5+)
For example on Boomer's [[:Image:Boomer Raptor.JPG|Raptor nameplate]] in the [[Miniseries]] and Kara Thrace's disciplinary records in "[[The Son Also Rises]]". Although "lieutenant, junior grade" has also been used in dialogue a few times, for example by Karl Agathon in "[[33]]", the vast majority of on-screen references and behind-the-scenes documentation use the term "junior lieutenant", and is thus the term preferred by Battlestar Wiki.
*While Ron Moore's blog entry from a couple seasons ago (see "Official Statements" below) uses the term "lieutenant junior grade," it should also be pointed out that other differences between the blog entry and the actual terminology and structure have been definitively proven since that entry was written. </ref> ||
This indicates that there are three subdivisions for this rank which are used in the scripts. As mentioned above some of these ranks differ from that listed elsewhere on Battlestar Wiki for practicality purposes. In addition it is important to remember that each enlisted device corresponds to two ranks: the colonial fleet version and its colonial marine corps rank equivalent.

==Official Statements==
*In a [http://blog.scifi.com/battlestar/archives/2005/02/index.html#a000020 blog entry] on February 19, 2005 Ronald Moore gave a little insight into the rank structure of Battlestar Galactica:
<blockquote>"What is the rank structure? It doesn't seem consistant [sic] with the Navy." <br>
'''
The rank structure is derived from the original series. I didn't want to change Commander Adama to Captain Adama or Colonel Tigh to Commander Tigh, so I elected to simply embrace the co-mingled nature of the original rank structure. For our internal purposes, we've decided that the ranks are indeed a mixture of naval and army nomenclature and are basically as follows:<br>
'''
Officers:
*Admiral
*Commander
*Colonel
*Major
*Captain
*Lieutenant
*Lieutenant Junior Grade
*Ensign
'''
Enlisted:
*Master Chief Petty Officer
*Chief Petty Officer
*Petty Officer (1st, 2nd Class)
*Specialist
*Deck Hand
*Recruit
'''
Just to complicate matters further, there are also Marines aboard ''Galactica'' which conform more closely to the traditional enlisted Marine ranks, with Sergeants, Sergeant-Majors (sic), etc. Unresolved is the question of whether the Marine officers would also adhere to the mixed rank structure (which sounds odd) or if they are strictly army equivalents (which makes no sense given that the "Navy" ranks seem oblivious to there being any such distinction). Aren't you glad you asked?</blockquote>
The '''Battle of The Colony''' is the final engagement between the [[Twelve Colonies of Kobol|humans]] of ''[[Galactica]]'' and the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylons]] as well as the final battle of the [[Cylon Civil War]].

The Colonials begin a rescue mission, the most dangerous and daring offensive ever undertaken by Admiral [[William Adama]] and a skeleton crew, to rescue [[Hera Agathon]], kidnapped by [[Sharon Valerii|Boomer]] and taken to [[the Colony]] for experimentation ([[Islanded in a Stream of Stars]]).

The battle comprises of people, both rebel Cylon and human, who volunteer to stay aboard ''Galactica''. There are only perhaps several hundred human or humanoid fighters, but fortunately the Cylons also add a few hundred [[Cylon Centurion]]s to the attack and defense forces.

Racetrack and Skulls are sent on a reconnaissance mission in a [[Raptor]]. They find the Colony in orbit of a black hole and also find the only place that a ship can jump in and out safely: within a kilometer of The Colony: point-blank range for The Colony's weapons.

Admiral Adama turns over command of the [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]] to [[Hoshi]] while [[Romo Lampkin]] is made the new President of the Colonies (as [[Lee Adama]] chooses to stay on ''Galactica'' to fight).

==Battle==
[[File:Colony Breech.jpg|thumb|right|200px|right|''Galactica'' rams herself into [[The Colony]].]]
''Galactica'' jumps in directly in front of the Colony, which opens fire with its gun batteries as it's too close for missiles or nukes for both sides. ''Galactica'' takes a pounding until [[Samuel Anders]] (now effectively ''Galactica's'' [[Hybrid]]) manages to hack into the Colony and shut down its Hybrids and their weapon control.

''Galactica'' immediately launches her [[Viper (RDM)|Vipers]] to engage the Colony's Raiders while the battlestar's Raptors jump directly from the starboard [[flight pod]] in a flanking position to board the Colony. The Raptor's jumps rip open the side of the flight pod, but safely arrive at the battle.

As ''Galactica's'' gun batteries fire at the Colony's gun batteries and Raiders, Admiral Adama orders flank speed on ''Galactica'', ramming the battlestar's dense "alligator-head" bow into the Colony. The collision punchs a hole in the Colony's side, ''Galactica's'' bow effectively docked in the enemy ship. From ''Galactica's'' bow enters allows a strike force made out of marines and Rebel Centurions. Raptor strike forces led by [[Kara Thrace|Starbuck]], [[Helo]] and [[Sharon Agathon|Athena]] cut their way in elsewhere on the Colony's hull.

The fight is not without serious losses. Racetrack and Skulls arm their nukes aboard their Raptor but are killed when an asteroid hits their ship, punching a hole in the window and smashing their helmets.

Inside the Colony, both strike forces push onwards despite opposition from not only modern Centurions but older [[Cylon Centurion Model 0005|Model 0005 Centurions]].

[[Kara Thrace]]'s forces discover Boomer, who has retrieved Hera out of sympathy and because she feels she owes Adama a favor. She hands the child over to the rescue team without a fight, warning the team that their Raptors have been destroyed and cannot be used for escape. Fortunately, the battle plan was to abandon the Raptors and return to ''Galactica'' through her bow.

After Sharon Agathon kills Sharon Valerii, Thrace's team meets up with [[Lee Adama]] and his team. All retreat to ''Galactica's'' airlock to escape the Colony.

Cavil, [[Simon]] and a [[Number Five]] go on the offensive, leading a platoon of Centurions in a boarding attack on ''Galactica''. Firefights break out all over the ship, with both sides suffering heavy casualties. [[Gaius Baltar]] and [[Caprica Six]] are among the many that help defend the ship from the boarders.

Karl Agathon is wounded by a Five. Hera runs away in the chaos. Her mother goes after her at her husband's insistence. [[Laura Roslin]], working in [[sickbay]], senses Hera's return and chases after her as well in what becomes a parallel of the [[Opera House Prophecy]], each person in turn part of a vision that protects the child from harm as she wanders through decks filled with gunfire and enemy forces. Caprica Six and Baltar eventually find Hera and take her with them to [[CIC]], recreating their movement as seen in their visions, encountering the [[Final Five]] there, standing on the CIC balcony.

Cavil is captured in CIC. During an explosion, Cavil takes Hera hostage and plans to leave with her as he sees her as the only hope for his kind. Baltar successfully talks Cavil into a truce in exchange for Hera's life. [[Saul Tigh]] sweetens the pot by offering [[Resurrection (RDM)|resurrection]] in exchange for the permanent true between humanity and Cylone. Cavil calls off his forces and the battle seems to end.

[[File:Colony's Demise.jpg|thumb|right|200px|right|Shortly after the truce is broken, a Raptor unintentionally fires its nuclear misses at the Colony.]]
However, the truce is short-lived. Shortly after the Final Five begin downloading their knowledge of resurrection to the enemy forces, [[Galen Tyrol]] breaks the download and kills [[Tory Foster]] when he learns that she is responsible for the [[The Ties That Bind|murder of Cally Tyrol]]. Believing themselves betrayed, the Cylons restart their attack, but after the Doral and Simon that joined him in CIC are killed, Cavil swears and kills himself. The Raiders resume attacking ''Galactica''.

In space, another asteroid strikes Racetrack's Raptor and causes her dead hand to accidentally hit the launch button for the remainder of the nuclear missiles from Galactica and Pegasus to fire. All 8 of the missiles hit the Colony, badly damaging it and knocking it out of its orbit towards the black hole nearby--and pulling ''Galactica'' with it.

Admiral Adama orders Thrace to jump the ship--[[blind jump|anywhere]]. Without the coordinates to the Fleet's location, she realizes that [[The Music|the mysterious music played by her father]] forms FTL coordinates. She enters the coordinates and ''Galactica'' escapes as the Colony is sucked into the black hole and destroyed.

==Aftermath==
[[File:Cripple.jpg|thumb|right|200px|right|After ''Galactica'' jumps, she suffers massive hull damage.]]
The toll of battle and her structural frailty are too much for the old battlestar. As she completes the jump, ''Galactica'' suffers a series of critical structural failures, breaking her backbone and permanently losing her FTL ability.

But Thrace's coordinates take ''Galactica'' to a habitable planet, lush and filled with life. They name this planet [[Earth (RDM)|Earth]] and, after retrieving the other Colonials at the rendezvous coordinates, the population of the Fleet is able to settle without concern.

The Rebel Cylons settle down with them and give the [[Rebel Basestar]] to their Centurions to find freedom and their own destiny.

The Hybrid Samuel Anders is instructed to autopilot ''Galactica'' and the last of her charge into the Sun, destroying the ships and allowing humanity and the Rebel Cylons a fresh start, sans technology.

It is not known whether the Cylons on the Colony were able to transmit any data or if any of them were able to escape before it fell into the black hole. The fate of the loyalist Cylons who were not on the Colony is likewise unclear, however, with both reproduction and the recovery of resurrection technology unlikely, their extinction is a foregone conclusion.

During the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies]], the Cylons mount an attack on the [[Scorpion Fleet Shipyards]]. With numerous [[Cylon Raider (RDM)|Raider]] squadrons armed with nuclear missiles, they destroy at least three battlestars and several support vessels ([[Razor]]).

Battlestar ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]'', commanded by Admiral [[Helena Cain|Cain]], is docked there and about to undergo a three-month systems overhaul when the attack occurs. In preparation for the refit, all computer networks are shut down, leaving the battlestar largely unaffected by Cylon-infiltrated [[Command Navigation Program]]. During the attack, Colonel [[Jurgen Belzen|Belzen]] reports that all computers are down and that the crew must perform all functions manually.

Tethered to its dock, ''Pegasus'' is swarmed by Raiders and struck by several missiles. Fuel and ordnance ignite on the battlestar's hangar decks, causing explosions that cause over 700 casualties. Cain orders a hasty departure from the dock, and the ship fires its reverse thrusters and tears itself free from the burning shipyard's umbilicals.

With ''Pegasus'''s defenses still down, and two nuclear missile inbound, Cain orders the [[CIC]] crew to spin up the [[FTL]] drive and to perform a [[blind jump]] on her command, despite the risk of colliding with a celestial body — "Wherever. Anywhere. Just jump", Cain recounts to Commander [[William Adama|Adama]] and President [[Laura Roslin|Roslin]] shortly after ''Pegasus'' tracks down ''Galactica'' several months later ([[Pegasus (episode)|Pegasus]]). The nuclear detonations throughout the shipyard create bursts of [[EMP|electromagnetic radiation]] that mask the jump and fool the Cylons into believing that the ship is destroyed ("[[Pegasus (episode)|Pegasus]]", "[[Razor]]").

==Battle==

[[Image:Img0059.jpg|245px]][[Image:Battery desctuction.jpg|245px]][[Image:Battery destroyed.jpg|245px]]
*''Galactica's main batteries are a primary target for the Cylons.''

==Broken Truce==

==Aftermath==

*''Galactica's main batteries are a primary target for the Cylons.''

==Broken Truce==

==Aftermath==
