The '''''Gideon''''' is a heavy hauler transport vessel within the [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]], captained by [[Elias Meeker]] ([[The Son Also Rises]]).

During [[Laura Roslin]]'s removal from office and [[Saul Tigh|Colonel Tigh]]'s enactment of [[Wikipedia:martial law|martial law]], [[Colonial Marine Corps|Colonial Marines]], sent by Colonel Tigh and led by Lieutenant [[Joe Palladino|Joe "Hammerhead" Palladino]], kill four unnarmed civilians during a riot on that ship.

The civilians aboard are protesting Roslin's removal from the presidency, the declaration martial law and the dissolving of the [[Quorum of Twelve (RDM)|Quorum of Twelve]], by hindering an effort to resupply ''[[Galactica]]''. During the protest, where coffee and other objects are thrown at the boarding party, the Marines hear what they think to be a gunshot. Believing that they are under attack, they fire into the crowd, until Palladino manages to weakly regain control of the situation after the damage had been inflicted ([[Resistance (episode)|Resistance]]).

Reporter [[D'anna Biers]] later hypes the incident as the "Gideon Massacre" to try to turn civilian opinion against ''Galactica'' ([[Final Cut]]).

When [[Kendra Shaw]] tries to tune in to a [[Talk Wireless]] interview with Gaius Baltar, she picks up a transmission from the ''[[Adriatic]]'' to the ''Demetrius'' concerning cargo wasting in ''Adriatics'''s holds ([[Razor]]).

After [[Kara Thrace]]'s return, a torn [[William Adama]] sends Thrace and a hand-picked crew in the ''Demetrius'' on a mission to find [[Earth (RDM)|Earth]], despite [[Laura Roslin]]'s warnings that Thrace is not to be trusted ([[Six of One]]). The Colonial public are told that they are on a survey mission to find food sources, though its disappearance is a matter of considerable media attention ([[The Ties That Bind]]). The ''Demetrius'' is accompanied by a detachment of five Vipers and a Raptor that are magnetically secured to the ship — four Vipers on the dorsal platform, and a Viper and a Raptor on the ventral one. At least one docking hatch exists on the port side.

After two months, the ''Demetrius'' is scheduled to rendezvous with the Fleet or be presumed destroyed. After encountering a [[Heavy Raider]] with a copy of [[Leoben Conoy (New Caprica copy)|Leoben Conoy]] aboard, however, Thrace decides to abandon the plan. Conoy offers an alliance between the humans and his faction in the [[Cylon civil war]], and Thrace wants to accompany him to his [[Basestar (RDM)|baseship]] in order to learn what the Cylons know about Earth, but her crew refuses to carry out the order ([[The Road Less Traveled]]).

Anders shoots [[Felix Gaeta]] in the leg over this and Thrace regains some control over her crew. She decides that it is too dangerous to take the entire ship and risk the lives of everyone on board, so she instead takes the Raptor with Anders, Barolay and Athena as her crew. Agathon remains in charge and decides to wait for her for just over 15 hours: the amount of time they can wait and still make the rendezvous with ''Galactica''. Eventually time runs out and though Agathon waits a minute longer it seems as if Thrace won't return. Just as the ship is about to jump, the Cylon rebels' basestar jumps in and he is contacted by Athena. The ''Demetrius'' and the basestar then prepare to jump to ''Galactica'' together ([[Faith]]).

However, due to their jump drives not being synchronized properly, the basestar arrives at the Fleet alone, causing a panic. With the [[wireless]] also damaged, the Fleet believes itself under attack and ''Galactica'' responds accordingly. The situation is defused when the ''Demetrius'' also returns after spooling up her FTL drives again ([[Guess What's Coming to Dinner?]]).

The ''Demetrius'' is amongst the ships that successfully reach [[Earth (RDM)|Earth]] ([[Revelations]]).

The main quarters area of the ship are small and cramped like that of a submarine. Even the captain's cabin is small and sparse. A common area exists for the crew to assemble and eat their meals.

[[Ellen Tigh]] is placed aboard the vessel by a copy of the Humanoid Cylon known as [[Number One|John Cavil]] shortly before it departs from Picon during the the [[Cylon attack]] ([[No Exit]]). She remains unconscious aboard the ship for three weeks before [[William Adama]] locates her ([[Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down]]). She later procures a day-long stay there for her husband and herself, where she apparently meant for him to meet with agents of [[Tom Zarek]] ([[Colonial Day]]).

''[[Galactica]]'s'' chief medical officer, Dr. [[Cottle]], is aboard the ''Rising Star'' at the time of the attempted assassination of Commander Adama ([[Scattered]]).

The '''''Hitei Kan''''' is a [[tylium]] [[refinery ship]] in the [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]].

The vessel is the site of a short-lived, but large labor strike threatening to spill over to other vessels in the Fleet. The strike is later resolved when a union, originally based on [[New Caprica]], is reinstated to aid with worker needs ([[Dirty Hands]]).

The ship's unique radiation signature is used by the Cylons to track the Fleet to the [[Ionian nebula]]. The signature is described as "a leak" and, after its discovery, used to lead the Cylons away from the rest of the Fleet ([[Crossroads, Part I]]). During the [[Battle of the Ionian Nebula]], the ''Hitei Kan'' can be seen next to the ''Astral Queen'', the ''[[Zephyr]]'' and a ship resembling the ''[[Scylla]]'' ([[He That Believeth In Me]]).

During the [[FTL]] upgrades with [[Cylon]] technology. The crew of the ''Hitei Kan'' mutinied, killing one Cylon and two [[Marines]], causing ''[[Galactica]]'' to scramble the [[mardet]] alert team.

Communications office [[Louis Hoshi]] tapped into wireless communications between the refinery ship and [[Tom Zarek]] aboard ''[[Colonial One]]'', linking Zarek to the takeover. After Zarek is arrested, Admiral [[William Adama|Adama]] succeeds in getting the coordinates of the missing ship and to dispatch more Raptors to return it to the Fleet ([[A Disquiet Follows My Soul]])

*The ''Hitei Kan'' is not identified by name in "[[Dirty Hands]]", but only referred to as "refinery ship". However, Chief Tyrol names the ship in a [[Dirty Hands#Bonus Scene|deleted scene]]. Moreover, it is identified in the episode's script.
*The ship is almost identical to the ''[[Daru Mozu]]'' except that the bridge of the ''Hitei Kan'' has a neck sticking out from the main hull with wing-like structures going from side to side. What appears to be the bridge that is almost identical to the one on the ''Daru Mozu'', which has just the bridge-like structure extending from the main hull.

New President [[Laura Roslin]] visits this ship while gathering a caravan from surviving civilian ships surrounding the colony of [[Twelve Colonies#Caprica|Caprica]]. A young girl named [[Cami]] and her grandmother are on this Botanical Cruiser with many other survivors.

However, the particular ship that Roslin visits lacks an [[FTL]] drive, and the light-speed-enabled part of President Roslin's caravan of refugee ships are forced to leave that Botanical Cruiser and many other [[sublight]] ships behind when [[Cylon Raider]]s discover the fleet of ships. "The Fleet" originates as a convoy of about 60 commercial and civilian ships in the space surrounding [[Caprica (RDM)|Caprica]]. [[Laura Roslin]] - with the aid of [[Sharon Valerii]] - initiates the clustering of stranded vessels in the aftermath of the Cylon invasion of the Twelve Colonies, thus forming the convoy. Twenty of these ships are abandoned to a squadron of attacking [[Raider (RDM)|Raiders]] because they either lack [[FTL]] drives, or are damaged, like the sublight ''[[Botanical Cruiser]]'' and ''[[Gemenon Liner 1701]]''. The remaining vessels join battlestar ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]'' - the only Colonial warship [[Pegasus (RDM)|known]] to have survived the Cylon attack - in the upper atmosphere of the gas giant [[Ragnar]]. From here on, ''Galactica'' shoulders the role of the Fleet's protector ([[Miniseries]]).

[[Anastasia Dualla]] explains in "[[33]]" that 53 ships have jumped away from an attacking Cylon baseship, with 10 still reporting trouble with their FTL drives. Adding ''Galactica'' to this tally, results in a total number of 64 ships. [[Saul Tigh]]'s statement in "[[The Farm]]" that the 24 ships departing with the [[Laura Roslin faction]] represent "almost a third of the fleet", implies that the number of ships in the Fleet is approximately in the mid-70's. By "[[The Passage]]", there are likely fewer ships left in the Fleet because of the ''[[Cloud Nine]]'' destruction ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]) and the settlement and emergency exodus of [[New Caprica]] ([[Exodus, Part II]]).

The political and social troubles befalling the Fleet as it wanders through space, serve as a metaphor for all of humanity, since the Fleet literally ''is'' what is left of humanity in the television series.

The phrase "the Fleet" functions not only as a signifier for the actual ships of the convoy, but as an indicator of the people on board, and therefore for mankind. Often the term is used to refer to the civilian populations, as opposed to the military personnel of ''Galactica'' and ''Pegasus''. Usage of the term "the Fleet" has not gained more than an informal acceptance, as can be seen by President Roslin's continued use of the term ''President of the [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)|Twelve Colonies]]''. This may be interpreted either as an expression of hope that the people of the Fleet will re-establish themselves on a new world, or a psychological inability to accept the Fleet as the only home that humanity will know for a long time.

After three years of searching the Fleet eventually reaches [[Earth (RDM)|Earth]], but are disappointed to find it a devastated wasteland as a result of a nuclear holocaust ([[Revelations]]). The fleet leave Earth in search of a new home, with the Rebel Cylon Basestar joining them ([[Sometimes a Great Notion]]). By the time of Felix Gaeta's and Tom Zarek's mutiny aboard ''Galactica'' ([[Blood on the Scales]]), dialogue indicates that the Fleet is down to the very low figure of 35 civilian ships, a suprising loss of about half the iniital ships from [[33]]. Most of these losses remain unacounted for, as very few civilian ships have been seen or heard to be actually lost on screen. Given that the human population has only declined by about one fifth at this point rather than a similar half, this could be a continuity error or retcon, or the remaining ships would have had to nearly double the number of civilians aboard to compensate. It is possible in the context of the dialogue in the episode that the figure of 35 referred only to the number of ships initially loyal to the mutineers.

The Rebel Basestar has now officaly joined the Fleet as seen in [[Someone to Watch Over Me]] as the Fleet has a new Quorum made out of ship captains and the Rebel Basestar has a representative on the new Quorum, a [[Six]] named Sonja.

In "[[Home, Part I]]", the [[Laura Roslin faction]] leaves the Fleet with 18,000 individuals, of which 9,500 ware Gemenese and 6,250 were Capricans. At that time the total population of the Fleet is 47,857.

This information is sparse, but it gives a general idea of the population breakdown of the Fleet if a few assumptions are made for the sake of argument.

The '''''Astral Queen''''' is a [[FTL]]-capable former starliner now given over to transporting prisoners between worlds. At the time of the [[Cylon attack]], she was originally said to be carrying 500 male prisoners ([[Miniseries]]) to their pardon hearings on [[Caprica (RDM)|Caprica]] ([[Bastille Day]]). However, this was later retconned and increased to a count of 1,500 prisoners. It was captained by [[Wilkens]] and crewed by guards such as [[Seaborne]] and [[Starke]].

Following sabotage aboard ''[[Galactica]]'', which destroys the majority of the Fleet's water reserves ([[Water]]), [[Lee Adama]] is sent to the ''Astral Queen'' to try and enlist the aid of the prisoners to help obtain fresh water supplies from an ice-bound moon ([[Bastille Day]]). However, once on board, he meets with the prisoners' spokesman, [[Tom Zarek]], who orchestrates a break-out and hijacking of the ship.

In return for his surrender and the assistance of the prisoners in obtaining the much-needed water ice for the Fleet, Lee Adama leaves Zarek and his men in control of the ''Astral Queen'', much to the chagrin of both President Roslin and Commander [[William Adama|Adama]] himself.

After the colonization of [[New Caprica]], the ''Astral Queen'' landed on the outskirts of [[New Caprica City]] next to ''[[Colonial One]]''. Another ship of the same design is still with the Fleet in orbit of the planet before jumping away ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]).

Some time after the [[Battle of New Caprica|escape]] from the planet, it and its companion traverse the [[Passage (star cluster)|star cluster]] around the [[algae planet]] ([[The Passage]]). When the Fleet jumps to the [[Ionian nebula]], the ''Astral Queen'' loses power and is hit by a Cylon missile in the ensuing [[Battle of the Ionian Nebula|battle]], causing slight damage to its forward section ("[[Crossroads, Part II]]", "[[He That Believeth In Me]]").

During the events of President [[Laura Roslin]]'s incarceration, all twelve delegates from the [[Quorum of Twelve]] are en route from this ship to ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]'' ([[Fragged]]).

Lt. [[Felix Gaeta]] discovers fraudulent ballots for President Roslin in ''Zephyr'''s ballot box during her ill-fated re-election attempt versus Vice-President [[Gaius Baltar]]. The ballots are later rejected and Baltar is declared the winner ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]).

After the discovery and settlement of [[New Caprica]], the ship is one of the few to remain in orbit (its shape may make it impractical or impossible to land). It manages to escape the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylon]] blockade of the planet along with ''Galactica'' and ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]'' ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]).

This "Wedge-Shaped vessel" is also known as the Colonial Defender, it was a widely used Ship in the Old Cylon Wars, though it makes an appearence in the new series it now only a Civillian Ship

In the [[The Fleet (RDM)|Colonial Fleet]], there are at least two of these unnamed '''wedge-shaped vessel'''s <ref>{{bsgwiki term}}</ref>. One of them can be briefly seen among the Fleet just behind the ''[[Gemenon Traveller]]'' when [[Raptor 719]] requests to dock with the heavy transport ([[Flesh and Bone]]).

At least one is part of ''Galactica'''s fleet in orbit around [[New Caprica]]) and among the last three ships to perform an emergency jump away from the planet when the Cylons arrive ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]).

One is also part of the first group of ships to be shepherded through the radiation cloud of a [[Passage (star cluster)|star cluster]] to a planet rich with consumable algae, just behind the ''[[Space Park]]'' ([[The Passage]]) <ref>It doesn't appear on the other side of the jump, but given the possible inaccuracies of special effects, it is unknown if this is meant to imply the vessel's destruction.</ref>. Another one can be seen just beyond the Fleet gathering with other civilian ships.

Further appearances are during a refueling mission over a gas giant ([[Maelstrom]]) and after the jump to the [[Ionian nebula]] ([[Crossroads, Part II]]).
