The '''''Gideon''''' is a heavy hauler transport vessel within the [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]], captained by [[Elias Meeker]] ([[The Son Also Rises]]).

During [[Laura Roslin]]'s removal from office and [[Saul Tigh|Colonel Tigh]]'s enactment of [[Wikipedia:martial law|martial law]], [[Colonial Marine Corps|Colonial Marines]], sent by Colonel Tigh and led by Lieutenant [[Joe Palladino|Joe "Hammerhead" Palladino]], kill four unnarmed civilians during a riot on that ship.

The civilians aboard are protesting Roslin's removal from the presidency, the declaration martial law and the dissolving of the [[Quorum of Twelve (RDM)|Quorum of Twelve]], by hindering an effort to resupply ''[[Galactica]]''. During the protest, where coffee and other objects are thrown at the boarding party, the Marines hear what they think to be a gunshot. Believing that they are under attack, they fire into the crowd, until Palladino manages to weakly regain control of the situation after the damage had been inflicted ([[Resistance (episode)|Resistance]]).

Reporter [[D'anna Biers]] later hypes the incident as the "Gideon Massacre" to try to turn civilian opinion against ''Galactica'' ([[Final Cut]]).
The '''''Demetrius''''' is a sewage processing ship in the [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]]. When [[Kendra Shaw]] tries to tune in to a [[Talk Wireless]] interview with Gaius Baltar, she picks up a transmission from the ''[[Adriatic]]'' to the ''Demetrius'' concerning cargo wasting in ''Adriatics'''s holds ([[Razor]]).

After [[Kara Thrace]]'s return, a torn [[William Adama]] sends Thrace and a hand-picked crew in the ''Demetrius'' on a mission to find [[Earth (RDM)|Earth]], despite [[Laura Roslin]]'s warnings that Thrace is not to be trusted ([[Six of One]]). The Colonial public are told that they are on a survey mission to find food sources, though its disappearance is a matter of considerable media attention ([[The Ties That Bind]]). The ''Demetrius'' is accompanied by a detachment of five Vipers and a Raptor that are magnetically secured to the ship — four Vipers on the dorsal platform, and a Viper and a Raptor on the ventral one. At least one docking hatch exists on the port side.

After two months, the ''Demetrius'' is scheduled to rendezvous with the Fleet or be presumed destroyed. After encountering a [[Heavy Raider]] with a copy of [[Leoben Conoy (New Caprica copy)|Leoben Conoy]] aboard, however, Thrace decides to abandon the plan. Conoy offers an alliance between the humans and his faction in the [[Cylon civil war]], and Thrace wants to accompany him to his [[Basestar (RDM)|baseship]] in order to learn what the Cylons know about Earth, but her crew refuses to carry out the order ([[The Road Less Traveled]]).

Anders shoots [[Felix Gaeta]] in the leg over this and Thrace regains some control over her crew. She decides that it is too dangerous to take the entire ship and risk the lives of everyone on board, so she instead takes the Raptor with Anders, Barolay and Athena as her crew. Agathon remains in charge and decides to wait for her for just over 15 hours: the amount of time they can wait and still make the rendezvous with ''Galactica''. Eventually time runs out and though Agathon waits a minute longer it seems as if Thrace won't return. Just as the ship is about to jump, the Cylon rebels' basestar jumps in and he is contacted by Athena. The ''Demetrius'' and the basestar then prepare to jump to ''Galactica'' together ([[Faith]]).

However, due to their jump drives not being synchronized properly, the basestar arrives at the Fleet alone, causing a panic. With the [[wireless]] also damaged, the Fleet believes itself under attack and ''Galactica'' responds accordingly. The situation is defused when the ''Demetrius'' also returns after spooling up her FTL drives again ([[Guess What's Coming to Dinner?]]).
A passenger liner in the [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]], the '''''Rising Star''''' is the location of the first birth of a Colonial since the [[Cylon attack]] ([[33]]).
[[Ellen Tigh]] is placed aboard the vessel by a copy of the Humanoid Cylon known as [[Number One|John Cavil]] shortly before it departs from Picon during the the [[Cylon attack]] ([[No Exit]]). She remains unconscious aboard the ship for three weeks before [[William Adama]] locates her ([[Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down]]). She later procures a day-long stay there for her husband and herself, where she apparently meant for him to meet with agents of [[Tom Zarek]] ([[Colonial Day]]).
Another vessel of the same design appears in "[[Razor]]" as part of ''Pegasus''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s civilian fleet.
The '''''Prometheus''''' is a freighter in the [[the Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]] rumored to be so rife with illicit activity, it is "off the grid". It serves as the base of operations for the ex-mercenary [[Phelan]] and is the main trading hub for the Fleet's [[black market (organization)|black market]] ([[Black Market]]).

During refueling operations over a gas giant, a valve failure requires a restart of the [[List of terms (RDM)#Military Jargon|unrep]] maneuver with ''Galactica'' ([[Maelstrom]]).

She is captained by [[Doyle Franks]], who is selected as one of five judges at [[Gaius Baltar]]'s trial ([[Crossroads, Part I]])<ref>The [[:Image:PatchPrometheus.jpg|patch]] on her dress uniform establishes her as a crewmember of ''Prometheus''.</ref>. After the trial, ''Prometheus'' jumps into the [[Ionian nebula]] and loses power before a [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylon]] attack on the Fleet ([[Crossroads, Part II]]).

== Notes ==
*The name of the freighter is notable, as it seems to be named after the Greek Titan [[Wikipedia:Prometheus|Prometheus]]. Prometheus is noted for taking fire from the Gods and giving it to the humans against [[Zeus]]'s wishes. Given [[Tom Zarek]]'s continual referencing of Admiral [[William Adama|Adama]] as Zeus, and the fact that the ''Prometheus'' is the hub of the [[black market (organization)|black market]], an organization which seeks to redistribute goods from the military to the civilians, the parallel is very apparent.

The '''''Hitei Kan''''' is a [[tylium]] [[refinery ship]] in the [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]].

The vessel is the site of a short-lived, but large labor strike threatening to spill over to other vessels in the Fleet. The strike is later resolved when a union, originally based on [[New Caprica]], is reinstated to aid with worker needs ([[Dirty Hands]]).

The ship's unique radiation signature is used by the Cylons to track the Fleet to the [[Ionian nebula]]. The signature is described as "a leak" and, after its discovery, used to lead the Cylons away from the rest of the Fleet ([[Crossroads, Part I]]). During the [[Battle of the Ionian Nebula]], the ''Hitei Kan'' can be seen next to the ''Astral Queen'', the ''[[Zephyr]]'' and a ship resembling the ''[[Scylla]]'' ([[He That Believeth In Me]]).

During the [[FTL]] upgrades with [[Cylon]] technology. The crew of the ''Hitei Kan'' mutinied, killing one Cylon and two [[Marines]], causing ''[[Galactica]]'' to scramble the [[mardet]] alert team.

Communications office [[Louis Hoshi]] tapped into wireless communications between the refinery ship and [[Tom Zarek]] aboard ''[[Colonial One]]'', linking Zarek to the takeover. After Zarek is arrested, Admiral [[William Adama|Adama]] succeeds in getting the coordinates of the missing ship and to dispatch more Raptors to return it to the Fleet ([[A Disquiet Follows My Soul]])

== Notes ==
*The ''Hitei Kan'' is not identified by name in "[[Dirty Hands]]", but only referred to as "refinery ship". However, Chief Tyrol names the ship in a [[Dirty Hands#Bonus Scene|deleted scene]]. Moreover, it is identified in the episode's script.
*The ship is almost identical to the ''[[Daru Mozu]]'' except that the bridge of the ''Hitei Kan'' has a neck sticking out from the main hull with wing-like structures going from side to side. What appears to be the bridge that is almost identical to the one on the ''Daru Mozu'', which has just the bridge-like structure extending from the main hull.
* In "[[Home, Part I]]" a refinery ship is referred to as "[[refueling tanker]]", but the configuration of the ship is identical to ''Daru Mozu'' and ''Hitei Kan''.
*In "[[A Disquiet Follows My Soul]]" as the ship jumps away from the Fleet, [[Saul Tigh]] laments of the ship's disappearance "Taking all our fuel with them." Unless this is a [[Continuity errors (RDM)|continuity error]], this may suggest that ''Hitei Kan'' is the only tylium ship left within the Fleet, and that the ''[[Daru Mozu]]'' was either abandoned or destroyed, perhaps in the [[Battle of New Caprica]].

Since these ships are completely without defenses, many ships like this Pan Galactic spaceliner were destroyed during the attacks<ref>The official web site for the series at SciFi.com notes a brief description of these passenger liners.</ref>.

At least one FTL-capable Pan Galactic spaceliner survived the attack and united with the [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]]. This liner, the ''Caprica Clipper'' is the last civilian ship to make its escape [[FTL|jump]] in the [[Battle of Ragnar Anchorage]] ([[Miniseries]]).

After the settlement of [[New Caprica]] it landed on the planet and is leaving with the other ships during the [[Battle of New Caprica|liberation]] ([[Exodus, Part II]]). It also successfully navigated the radiation dense star cluster to the [[algae planet]] ([[The Passage]]).

Pan Galactic uses the popular [[luxury liner|spaceliner]] design used by other spacelines such as [[Gemon Liners]].

==Notes==
*The livery and name of Pan Galactic is based on the airline [[Wikipedia:Pan_American_World_Airways|Pan American]] (or Pan Am), which ceased operations in 1991.
*Pan Galactic's company logo, located on the ship's sides and underside tail, is nearly identical to the one of Pan Am, except for its lettering, which says "Pan Gal."
*The use of the likeness of the old Pan Am logo is likely an homage to the film ''[[w:2001: A Space Odyssey (film)|2001: A Space Odyssey]]'', where a [[w:Space Shuttle Orbiter|Space Shuttle-like]] winged transport (run by a fictional version of Pan Am) is seen.

'''Colonial Movers''' is a company that operates four container ships that survived the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies|Cylon attack]] ([[Miniseries]]).

One of the Colonial Movers ships is used as a decoy during the [[Battle for the Tylium Asteroid|attack on a Cylon mining outpost]]. Although appearing to be a helpless mining ship, it is in fact carrying Captain [[Lee Adama]]'s strike force of [[Viper (RDM)|Vipers]] hidden in one of its cargo containers ([[The Hand of God (RDM)|The Hand of God]]).

At least one of the Colonial Movers jumps with the [[Laura Roslin faction]] to [[Kobol (RDM)|Kobol]] when the Fleet splits in two ([[The Farm]]).

One of the Colonial Movers ships is destroyed by the nuclear explosion on ''[[Cloud 9]]'' ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]). At least two of them landed on [[New Caprica]] ([[Precipice]]) and would later escape back to the Fleet ([[Exodus, Part II]]) while another remained with the ''Galactica'' in orbit.

The remaining Colonial Movers ships remain in the Fleet until they lose power in the [[Ionian nebula]] ([[Crossroads, Part II]]). The ships would survive the [[Battle of the Ionian Nebula]] and would arrive at [[Earth]] ("[[He That Believeth In Me]]", "[[Revelations]]")

==Notes==
* The Colonial Movers name and slogan (We Move Anywhere) are visible on the ship model.
* At least two Colonial Movers ships appear in the [[Battlestar Galactica (TOS)|Original Series]] as well, with a similar design and the same slogan. They can be seen prominently during "[[Saga of a Star World]]", when the ships are first escaping the Colonies. They do not figure prominently in any TOS story line, however.
*Plastic model enthusiasts may recognize the front of the ship as an element of the heat shield of the second stage engines of a [[Wikipedia:Saturn V|Saturn V]] moon rocket model.
The '''''Gemini''''' is a freighter in the [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]].

Originally an ordnance freighter, she is escorted to [[Laura Roslin]]'s caravan by three [[Viper Mark VII]]s that have escaped the attacks ([[Miniseries]]).

''Gemini'' is one of three freighters used as decoys in the [[Battle for the Tylium Asteroid]] ([[The Hand of God (RDM)|The Hand of God]]).
It is among the ships that join the [[Laura Roslin faction]] that secedes from the Fleet and jumps to [[Kobol (RDM)|Kobol]] ([[Home, Part I]]).

The ship remains in orbit over [[New Caprica]] and escapes with ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]'' and ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]'' ([[Occupation]]).
The ''Thera Sita'' is successfully guided through a dangerously hot star cluster cloud by way of a [[Raptor]] piloted by [[Lee Adama|Apollo]] on the first of five outbound [[FTL]] jumps to the [[algae planet]] ([[The Passage]]).

The loss of several ships during this journey leads to overcrowding on some of the Fleet's ships. As a result 301 inhabitants of the ''Thera Sita'' are temporarily housed in [[Dogsville]] on ''Galactica'', some of whom have contracted [[Mellorak infection|Mellorak sickness]] ([[The Woman King]]).
The '''''Majahual''''' is a [[mining ship]] in the [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]]. It conducts mining operations for five weeks in the asteroid belt of an unnamed star system, during which time the Colonials face repeated harassment by Cylon [[Raider]]s.

The battlestar ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]'' stays behind to protect the ''Majahual'' during its mining. ''Galactica'' must use [[Mark One Eyeball|visual sighting]] from their [[Combat Air Patrol|CAP]] Vipers to eliminate the Raiders since [[DRADIS]] cannot differentiate the system's debris from the enemy fighters.

Despite breaking several drilling bits, the ''Majahual'' is able to collect enough "strategic ore" to allow the Viper construction resources on the battlestar ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]'' an opportunity to construct at least two squadrons of [[Viper (RDM)|Viper Mk.
It is later noted on the [[:Image:Tally chalkboard.jpg|master tally board]] on ''Galactica'' in use during the presidential election ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]).
'''Botanical Cruisers''' are ships with domes that may serve as space-borne vacation ships, or are used as greenhouses for specialty food or plant-matter production.

At least two Botanical Cruisers escape the initial [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies|Cylon attack on the Colonies]].

New President [[Laura Roslin]] visits this ship while gathering a caravan from surviving civilian ships surrounding the colony of [[Twelve Colonies#Caprica|Caprica]]. A young girl named [[Cami]] and her grandmother are on this Botanical Cruiser with many other survivors.

However, the particular ship that Roslin visits lacks an [[FTL]] drive, and the light-speed-enabled part of President Roslin's caravan of refugee ships are forced to leave that Botanical Cruiser and many other [[sublight]] ships behind when [[Cylon Raider]]s discover the fleet of ships. This ship and others without FTL drives are presumed destroyed by the Cylons ([[Miniseries]]).

At least one other Cruiser exists in the [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]]. It is successfully escorted to the [[algae planet]] through a dangerous star cluster, although it appears the biota did not fare so well in the presence of so much ionizing radiation ([[The Passage]]).

== Notes ==
*The Botanical Cruiser was an homage to the [[Agro Ship|Agro Ships]] from the original ''[[Battlestar Galactica (TOS)|Battlestar Galactica]]'', which themselves were re-used models from the botanical spacecraft from the movie ''[[IMDB:Silent Running|Silent Running]]'', a Universal/MCA movie that special effects guru [[John Dykstra]] worked on a few years prior to the Original Series.
==Overview==
"The Fleet" originates as a convoy of about 60 commercial and civilian ships in the space surrounding [[Caprica (RDM)|Caprica]]. [[Laura Roslin]] - with the aid of [[Sharon Valerii]] - initiates the clustering of stranded vessels in the aftermath of the Cylon invasion of the Twelve Colonies, thus forming the convoy. Twenty of these ships are abandoned to a squadron of attacking [[Raider (RDM)|Raiders]] because they either lack [[FTL]] drives, or are damaged, like the sublight ''[[Botanical Cruiser]]'' and ''[[Gemenon Liner 1701]]''. The remaining vessels join battlestar ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]'' - the only Colonial warship [[Pegasus (RDM)|known]] to have survived the Cylon attack - in the upper atmosphere of the gas giant [[Ragnar]]. From here on, ''Galactica'' shoulders the role of the Fleet's protector ([[Miniseries]]).

[[Anastasia Dualla]] explains in "[[33]]" that 53 ships have jumped away from an attacking Cylon baseship, with 10 still reporting trouble with their FTL drives. Adding ''Galactica'' to this tally, results in a total number of 64 ships. [[Saul Tigh]]'s statement in "[[The Farm]]" that the 24 ships departing with the [[Laura Roslin faction]] represent "almost a third of the fleet", implies that the number of ships in the Fleet is approximately in the mid-70's. By "[[The Passage]]", there are likely fewer ships left in the Fleet because of the ''[[Cloud Nine]]'' destruction ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]) and the settlement and emergency exodus of [[New Caprica]] ([[Exodus, Part II]]).

The political and social troubles befalling the Fleet as it wanders through space, serve as a metaphor for all of humanity, since the Fleet literally ''is'' what is left of humanity in the television series.

The phrase "the Fleet" functions not only as a signifier for the actual ships of the convoy, but as an indicator of the people on board, and therefore for mankind. Often the term is used to refer to the civilian populations, as opposed to the military personnel of ''Galactica'' and ''Pegasus''. Usage of the term "the Fleet" has not gained more than an informal acceptance, as can be seen by President Roslin's continued use of the term ''President of the [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)|Twelve Colonies]]''. This may be interpreted either as an expression of hope that the people of the Fleet will re-establish themselves on a new world, or a psychological inability to accept the Fleet as the only home that humanity will know for a long time.

After three years of searching the Fleet eventually reaches [[Earth (RDM)|Earth]], but are disappointed to find it a devastated wasteland as a result of a nuclear holocaust ([[Revelations]]). The fleet leave Earth in search of a new home, with the Rebel Cylon Basestar joining them ([[Sometimes a Great Notion]]). By the time of Felix Gaeta's and Tom Zarek's mutiny aboard ''Galactica'' ([[Blood on the Scales]]), dialogue indicates that the Fleet is down to the very low figure of 35 civilian ships, a suprising loss of about half the iniital ships from [[33]]. Most of these losses remain unacounted for, as very few civilian ships have been seen or heard to be actually lost on screen. Given that the human population has only declined by about one fifth at this point rather than a similar half, this could be a continuity error or retcon, or the remaining ships would have had to nearly double the number of civilians aboard to compensate. It is possible in the context of the dialogue in the episode that the figure of 35 referred only to the number of ships initially loyal to the mutineers.

The Rebel Basestar has now officaly joined the Fleet as seen in [[Someone to Watch Over Me]] as the Fleet has a new Quorum made out of ship captains and the Rebel Basestar has a representative on the new Quorum, a [[Six]] named Sonja.

Initially, it appears that the production did not have a master list of ships in the first season, as evidenced by the numerical discrepancies to the later retconned numbers in Season 2. The following is a list of ships that have been mentioned in deleted scenes exclusively.

{|class="messagebox sortable" style="width:100%" cellspacing="2" cellpadding="2" align="center"
|''{{inlineref|bold=N|Coronis}}'' || ''Coronis'' is mentioned in a deleted scene in "[[Litmus]]", as a ship carrying people who are unhappy about being last in food ration distribution. However, it is not present on either the master tally board on ''Galactica'' or the whiteboard tracker on ''Colonial One'' in "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II". As ''Coronis'' has not been mentioned in any canonical capacity, it is considered totally abandoned by the producers .<br/>
In Greek mythology [[w:Coronis (Greek mythology)|Coronis]] is the name of several figures.
|}

==Demographics==
A few points of information are available concerning the demographics of the Fleet. In "[[33]]", before the destruction of the Olympic Carrier, there are 5,251 survivors from Sagittaron and 49,998 total survivors. In "[[Home, Part I]]", the [[Laura Roslin faction]] leaves the Fleet with 18,000 individuals, of which 9,500 ware Gemenese and 6,250 were Capricans. At that time the total population of the Fleet is 47,857.

This information is sparse, but it gives a general idea of the population breakdown of the Fleet if a few assumptions are made for the sake of argument.
*Note that Gemenon and Caprica have more citizens in the Roslin faction alone than Sagittaron has in the entire Fleet. The Twelve Colonies are clearly not represented in equal proportion.
*Before the destruction of the ''Olympic Carrier'', Sagittaron natives make up 10.50% of the Fleet. Solely for the purpose of argument, it is assumed that the ''Olympic Carrier'''s population breakdown was identical to the rest of the Fleet's and that Sagittaron continues to make up 10.50% of the Fleet's total population.
*The figures from the Roslin faction can be interpreted in several ways:
<div style="float:right; margin:10px">[[Image:Demographics1.png]]</div>
:*ASSUMPTION 1: All Gemenese and Capricans jump to Kobol with the Roslin faction.
::*Caprica: 6,250 persons (13%)
::*Gemenon: 9,500 persons (20%)
::*Sagittaron: 5,026 persons (11%)
::*Others: 27,081 (57%)<br clear="both">
<div style="float:right; margin:10px">[[Image:Demographics2.png]]</div>
:*ASSUMPTION 2: All Gemenese jump to Kobol with the Roslin faction, lured by the "religion card", but the Caprican portion of the Roslin faction is representative of the Fleet.
::*Caprica: 28,204 persons (59%)
::*Gemenon: 9,500 persons (20%)
::*Sagittaron: 5,026 persons (11%)
::*Others: 5,127 persons (11%)<br clear="both">
<div style="float:right; margin:10px">[[Image:Demographics3.png]]</div>
:*ASSUMPTION 3: Caprican and Gemenese portions of the Roslin faction are representative of the Fleet.
::*Caprica: 16,617 persons (35%)
::*Gemenon: 25,258 persons (53%)
::*Sagittaron: 5,026 persons (11%)
::*Others: 956 (2%)<br clear="both">
*Although it is plausible that the Caprican population is substantially larger than the other Colonies, as ''Colonial Heavy 798'' is in the vicinity when the attack begins, and is the nucleus around which the Fleet rallies, it is unlikely that the populations of each colony are grossly unequal, or else the [[Quorum of Twelve (RDM)|Quorum of Twelve]] would be a very poor system of government. The likeliest scenario is therefore somewhere in between assumptions 1 and 2, with nearly all of the Gemenon population (drawn by the "religion card") and a large portion of the Caprican population leaving with Roslin.
*Alternatively, it is possible that the population of the Colonies are grossly unequal. Although the structure of the Quorum of Twelve appears to maintain at least a fiction that the Colonies are roughly equal, next to nothing is known about how the [[Government|governmental]] system of the Colonies was established or how it evolved over time. Indeed, the United States Senate, for example, by design expressly assumes that the various states constituting it are 'equal' even though this is clearly not the case in terms of their respective populations. Furthermore, the fact that a system of government is 'poor' or else not representatively proportional does not mean it cannot actually be implemented and even survive for long periods of time.

As for the population distribution, the population of several ships is known: ''Galactica'' (2,693 as of "[[Water]]"), the ''Olympic Carrier'' (1,345 as of "[[33]]"), ''Astral Queen'' (1,500 as of "[[Bastille Day]]", [[List of retcons (RDM)|retconned]] up from 500 in the Miniseries) and ''Pyxis'' (600 when destroyed in "[[He That Believeth In Me]]"). There are 176 civilians in the cargo hold of ''[[Colonial One]]'' in "[[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II]]". The Fleet is stated at about 75 ships in "[[Resistance (episode)|Resistance]]", retconned up from 40 in the Miniseries.
*Going by the 75 ship count, the remaining ships besides ''Galactica'' and the ''Astral Queen'' each carry about 600 persons on average.
*The 23 ships that leave with the [[Laura Roslin faction]], apart from the ''Astral Queen'', would have an average population of about 720 persons per ship.

The Fleet's population has declined by about 8,000 since the above.

==Notes==
*Unofficially, many viewers refer to the Fleet as the "RTF"; "Rag Tag Fleet", or more fully, "RTFF." These nicknames come from the term "Rag Tag Fugitive Fleet," a name used in the opening credits voice over of the [[Battlestar Galactica (TOS)|Original Series]] (performed by series creator [[Lorne Greene]]), describing the [[The Fleet (TOS)|civilian refugee fleet]].
* In the [[Miniseries]], astute viewers may recognize three spacecraft with notable resemblances of ships from other SF universes. The first two of these ships aren't considered a [[Canon|canonical]] part of the series or the Fleet, but their appearance adds a bit of humor and pays homage to other notable science fiction and their creative staff.
:* ''Serenity'', the central ship from the TV series ''[[Wikipedia:Firefly (TV series)|Firefly]]'' and the motion picture ''[[Wikipedia:Serenity (film)|Serenity]]'', [[:md:Image:SerenityBSGMini.JPG|appears briefly in the sky]] outside the window of a doctor's office where viewers first see [[Laura Roslin]]. :* The original USS [[MemoryAlpha:USS Enterprise (NCC-1701)|''Enterprise'' (NCC-1701)]] from the original ''[[MemoryAlpha:Star Trek: The Original Series|Star Trek]]'' TV series makes a cameo in the [[:md:Image:Enterprise in fleet.jpg|last shot of the Fleet]] as [[Elosha]] chants a prayer in the memorial service near the end of the Miniseries. Look to the upper right corner for the ship in a still frame. All Season 1 [[opening credits]] use this shot, so ''Enterprise'' makes a very quick appearance with each of the first 13 episodes (This is best viewed from the [[Season 1 DVD]] set).
:*The ill-fated [[Botanical Cruiser]] in the Miniseries was added in homage to the [[Agro Ship]] from the Original Series, which in turn were the re-used models from the SF film ''[[Wikipedia:Silent Running|Silent Running]]'', a Universal/MCA movie that special effects guru [[John Dykstra]] worked on a few years prior. At least one FTL-capable version of this ship survives and exists in the Fleet ([[The Passage]]).

The '''''Astral Queen''''' is a [[FTL]]-capable former starliner now given over to transporting prisoners between worlds. At the time of the [[Cylon attack]], she was originally said to be carrying 500 male prisoners ([[Miniseries]]) to their pardon hearings on [[Caprica (RDM)|Caprica]] ([[Bastille Day]]). However, this was later retconned and increased to a count of 1,500 prisoners. It was captained by [[Wilkens]] and crewed by guards such as [[Seaborne]] and [[Starke]].

Following sabotage aboard ''[[Galactica]]'', which destroys the majority of the Fleet's water reserves ([[Water]]), [[Lee Adama]] is sent to the ''Astral Queen'' to try and enlist the aid of the prisoners to help obtain fresh water supplies from an ice-bound moon ([[Bastille Day]]). However, once on board, he meets with the prisoners' spokesman, [[Tom Zarek]], who orchestrates a break-out and hijacking of the ship.

[[Image:Bsg-1-03.jpg|thumb|left|[[Lee Adama]] and [[Tom Zarek]] on the ''Astral Queen'']]
The situation is resolved jointly by a [[Colonial Marine Corps|Marine]] assault from ''Galactica'' and by Lee Adama, agreeing to the core of Zarek's demands: that free and fair elections are held within the [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]] to appoint a new president at the end of [[Laura Roslin]]'s term - some seven months from the date of the revolt on the ''Astral Queen''. In return for his surrender and the assistance of the prisoners in obtaining the much-needed water ice for the Fleet, Lee Adama leaves Zarek and his men in control of the ''Astral Queen'', much to the chagrin of both President Roslin and Commander [[William Adama|Adama]] himself.

After the colonization of [[New Caprica]], the ''Astral Queen'' landed on the outskirts of [[New Caprica City]] next to ''[[Colonial One]]''. Another ship of the same design is still with the Fleet in orbit of the planet before jumping away ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]).

Some time after the [[Battle of New Caprica|escape]] from the planet, it and its companion traverse the [[Passage (star cluster)|star cluster]] around the [[algae planet]] ([[The Passage]]). When the Fleet jumps to the [[Ionian nebula]], the ''Astral Queen'' loses power and is hit by a Cylon missile in the ensuing [[Battle of the Ionian Nebula|battle]], causing slight damage to its forward section ("[[Crossroads, Part II]]", "[[He That Believeth In Me]]").

The ''Astral Queen'' later becomes home to a new set of prisoners: the surviving mutineers from the [[Gaeta's Mutiny|thwarted mutiny attempt]] led by [[Felix Gaeta]] and [[Tom Zarek]]<ref>Confirmed by the podcast for [[Deadlock]].</ref>.
== Notes ==
*The ship is equipped with at least one "flare", launched upward from some point amidships and on the dorsal section ([[The Farm]]).
*The design and function of the ''Astral Queen'' is an acknowledgment of the [[Battlestar Galactica (TOS)|Original Series]], in which an identical design of vessel was defined as the [[Prison Barge (TOS)|Prison Barge]].
*In the DVD commentary for "[[Bastille Day]]", Ronald Moore and David Eick say that in hindsight they feel that "Astral Queen" was a very poor choice of name for a prison ship, and they now wish they had used a different name.
*The ''Astral Queen'' is, according to the DVD commentary, named for [[MemoryAlpha:Astral Queen|a transport]] mentioned in the original ''[[MemoryAlpha:Star Trek: The Original Series|Star Trek]]'' episode "[[MemoryAlpha:The Conscience of the King|The Conscience of the King]]".

The '''''Zephyr''''' is an [[FTL]]-capable civilian passenger liner that manages escape the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies|destruction of the Twelve Colonies]] to join the [[the Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]] ([[Miniseries]]).

During the events of President [[Laura Roslin]]'s incarceration, all twelve delegates from the [[Quorum of Twelve]] are en route from this ship to ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]'' ([[Fragged]]).

Lt. [[Felix Gaeta]] discovers fraudulent ballots for President Roslin in ''Zephyr'''s ballot box during her ill-fated re-election attempt versus Vice-President [[Gaius Baltar]]. The ballots are later rejected and Baltar is declared the winner ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]).

After the discovery and settlement of [[New Caprica]], the ship is one of the few to remain in orbit (its shape may make it impractical or impossible to land). It manages to escape the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylon]] blockade of the planet along with ''Galactica'' and ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]'' ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]).

The ''Zephyr'' is among the first ships taken through the star cluster towards the [[algae planet]] ([[The Passage]]) and is among the first ships to jump into the [[Ionian nebula]] before losing power ([[Crossroads, Part II]]).

Baltar's first lawyer, [[Alan Hughes]], comes from the ''Zephyr''. Racetrack complains that she has to shuttle him between there and ''Galactica'' ([[The Son Also Rises]]).

The ship is severely damaged by two missile strikes in the [[Battle of the Ionian Nebula]], but survives and is still capable of flight ([[He That Believeth in Me]]). A few days later, [[:image:Rebuilding the Space Park.jpg|repairs]] to the damaged portion of the ring begin ([[Six of One]]).

Approximately two months later, the ring section has been largely repaired ([[Guess What's Coming to Dinner?]]).

The ''Zephyr'' is amongst the group of ships that successfully arrive at [[Earth (RDM)|Earth]] ([[Revelations]]).

Lt. Felix Gaeta is on his way to the ''Zephyr'' for some R&R along with two [[Number Eight]]s, Specialist [[Brooks (RDM)|Brooks]], Lt. [[J. Finnegan|J. "Shark" Finnegan]] and [[Esrin|"Easy" Esrin]]([[The Face of the Enemy]]).

By the time the fleet were leaving Earth, ''Zephyr'''s ring was spinning once more ("[[Sometimes a Great Notion]]", "[[A Disquiet Follows My Soul]]")

== Additional Information ==

:''The following information was previously available on the SciFi Channel website. It should be noted that information from that website, while being official, is unreliable and may be contradicted on screen:''
*The ''Zephyr'', referred to as the ''Space Park'', is of [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Libris|Libran]] registry.
*Its enormous ring section was designed in the days when artificial gravity was too expensive to utilize on a commercial ship of that size.
*This passenger liner design was so successful that it was adapted for scientific and military uses by replacing passenger accommodation with laboratories, auxiliary power generators, and computer cores.

== Notes ==

* The ship is likely named after the Greek god of the western wind, [[wikipedia:Anemoi|Zephyrus]].
*The repair of the ''Zephyr'' is the first time that large scale repair operations to the outside of a ship within the Fleet can be seen on screen.
*It appears that the ''Zephyr'' is one in a series of ships that has undergone a design retcon (others include the [[Viper Mark VII]], the Cylon [[Basestar (RDM)|basestar]] and the Cylon [[Raider (RDM)|Raider]]/[[Heavy Raider]]) in the third season. The new version appears the be more weathered - with far fewer "clean" lines than the original model - and bears a thickened neck section and a jagged antenna-like device that replaces the needle nose of the original.
== The Colonial Defender ==

This "Wedge-Shaped vessel" is also known as the Colonial Defender, it was a widely used Ship in the Old Cylon Wars, though it makes an appearence in the new series it now only a Civillian Ship

The Defender was used widely by the colonials but its class fell out of fashion and most where either retired to Civillian ships or Scrapped.
In the [[The Fleet (RDM)|Colonial Fleet]], there are at least two of these unnamed Colonial defender's <ref>{{bsgwiki term}}</ref>. One of them can be briefly seen among the Fleet just behind the ''[[Gemenon Traveller]]'' when [[Raptor 719]] requests to dock with the heavy transport ([[Flesh and Bone]]).

At least one is part of ''Galactica'''s fleet in orbit around [[New Caprica]]) and among the last three ships to perform an emergency jump away from the planet when the Cylons arrive ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]).

One is also part of the first group of ships to be shepherded through the radiation cloud of a [[Passage (star cluster)|star cluster]] to a planet rich with consumable algae, just behind the ''[[Space Park]]'' ([[The Passage]]) <ref>It doesn't appear on the other side of the jump, but given the possible inaccuracies of special effects, it is unknown if this is meant to imply the vessel's destruction.</ref>. Another one can be seen just beyond the Fleet gathering with other civilian ships.

Further appearances are during a refueling mission over a gas giant ([[Maelstrom]]) and after the jump to the [[Ionian nebula]] ([[Crossroads, Part II]]).

==Notes==
*This ship appears to be based on a design created by a fan of the series, Todd Boyce. On his website where many other [[fan fiction]] renderings are hosted, he called the ship the "''Defender''".

* While the wedge-shaped vessel shares its design with the "''Defender''", it does not share its military purpose. The ''Defender'' is a military ship, envisioned by the artist as a support vessel for larger [[battlestar (RDM)|battlestar]]s. However, in the series [[canon]], ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]'' is the only Colonial military vessel in the [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]].

*With some Reaver additions, the ship appears as a background vessel in the movie ''Serenity''. The effects for both ''Serenity'' and ''Battlestar Galactica'' were produced by Zoic.

*Battlestar Wiki is not a [[fan fiction]] repository. However, the remarkable similarity between the artist's ship (created before the episode "[[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]") and its inclusion in the Re-imagined Series warrant mention in this encyclopedia.

*The Colonial Defender has 2 mark Designs Mk1 is The Image you see above MK2 has a Hanagar in the Middle, although this ship is the exact same design as The Colonial Defender it doesn't share its military purpose, it is used more as a Civillian Ship in the RDM
This "Wedge-Shaped vessel" is also known as the Colonial Defender, it was a widely used Ship in the Old Cylon Wars, though it makes an appearence in the new series it now only a Civillian Ship

In the [[The Fleet (RDM)|Colonial Fleet]], there are at least two of these unnamed '''wedge-shaped vessel'''s <ref>{{bsgwiki term}}</ref>.

==Notes==
