The Galatea is a ship in The Fleet. The ship has yet to be seen, but its name was shown on the voting tally board in "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II".
*The Galatea is probably named for main character in the Greek myth of Pygmalion. Pygmalion, a sculptor, creates a statue of a woman; it is so beautiful that he falls in love with it, and the gods reward him by bringing her (Galatea) to life.
Overview
:Starvation threatens the population after the food-processing systems become contaminated, but the Fleet is cut off from a food source by the intense radiation put out by a huge star cluster. Galacticas pilots must guide the civilian vessels on a dangerous journey directly through the radiation.

Summary
On Galactica
*Athena flies a Raptor through a blinding, immensely bright gas cloud. The Raptor's outer skin is charring from the intense heat. Athena is managing to fight off the intense radiation buildup surrounding her, thanks to her Cylon physiology, but a radiation monitor badge she wears is changing color from white, spotting to an ominous black.
*Elsewhere in the Fleet, President Laura Roslin summarizes the contamination of the basic foodstuff material storage used to feed everyone, from soldier to civilian. The situation is dire; 7 to 10 days of rations remain. The Fleet is starving.
*A group of pilots, including Lee Adama, Kara Thrace, Hot Dog and Louanne Katraine, are combining what little food they have and sharing it, down to the last crumb.
*Admiral William Adama and his command staff await Athena's return from her reconnaisance mission to what they believe is a planet with algae. The algae, according to Dr. Cottle, isn't extremely palatable but is protein-rich and will allow them to restock their food stores and survive. Athena is three hours late from return.
*Athena does make it back to Galactica. While her radiation badge is black, her Cylon physiology protects her (although she is obviously uncomfortable). She reports success; the planet is teeming with algae.
*But the travel through the star cluster is extremely dangerous. Two jumps are required to reach the planet on the other side of the cluster, which cannot be circumnavigated. The navigation computers of any civilian ships inside the cluster would be inoperative due to insufficient shielding and the intense radiation leaves a ship only minutes to gather their bearings for the second jump out before they absorb a fatal dose of radiation. Any ship would also have to endure the intense heat as well.
*Galactica alone cannot be used to ferry the people, and the civilian ships alone would not make the trip as they would get lost within the cluster cloud. There is too much algae for Galactica to bring the food to the people in time.
*The Adamas consider the use of the Raptors, whose navigation systems are radiation-hardened to protect against nuclear strikes, as pilot ships that will guide a group of civilian ships at a time by visual reckoning, relaying the proper jump coordinates once visual sighting is made to get the ships to the other side. Five jumps are needed, and skeleton crews are used on each civilian ship to limit the Fleet's possible losses, with the civilians temporarily transferred to Galactica, which will survive the radiation effects thanks to the battlestar's dense hull plating (Miniseries).
*A group of civilians are bunked on Galactica from the civilian ships. One of them recognizes Kat, but calls out for her by another name: "Sasha." Kat reacts angrily to the man, Enzo, and barely acknowledges his call before warning him to back off.
*The pilots are briefed on the plan, and each given radiation badges. When Major Adama encourages the use of stims, Kat objects, warning that stims work by boosting the body's metabolism. In their starvation state, the stims would make them ill. Adama leaves the use of the drug to the pilot's discretion.
*Colonel Saul Tigh returns to the CIC and is greeted by a round of applause from the crew. He promptly reminds them that they have "jobs to do," resuming his post as XO of Galactica. Admiral Adama keeps a quiet smile to himself as he notices Tigh's return, knowing his friend would not care to be particularly noticed.
*The first outbound flight into the cluster begins. The Adriatic is lost when its Raptor guide, flown by Hot Dog, cannot locate her.
*Successive trips continue, but another ship, the Carina, guided by Kat, is lost as well, which greatly angers and saddens her. She stays in the cloud a few minutes too long during her extended search, and her radiation badge becomes dark.
*In the hangar deck, Thrace notices Enzo interacting with Kat and gets suspicious. She later questions Enzo and later, Kat.
*Kat begs Thrace not to tell Admiral Adama about her past life as a drug runner and the fact that she acquired her name, "Louanne Katraine," from a child that died two days before the Cylon attack, using it to clear Galacticas pilot screening when she was a nugget. Thrace accepts her offer, warning her to embrace who she really is.
*Feeling backed into a corner, Kat is physically stressed. Her hair is falling out, a sign of radiation poisoning. Fearful of what will happen to her if Admiral Adama finds out about her past, she chooses to continue her Raptor flights, swapping her radiation badge with Helo's. She allows herself a sexual romp with Enzo before preparing for the last outbound flight.
*The last outbound trip is more destructive. Even Galactica cannot withstand the heat and begins to suffer heat-related decompression failures throughout its hull. Adama orders his son to wrap out visual sighting and perform the escape jump.
*Kat cannot find her last ship. Realizing she had already absorbed too much radiation, she elects to remain in the cloud to continue searching for her lost ship.
*Galactica waits for several frightening minutes until both Kat's Raptor and the last civilian ship rejoin them.
*Kat is greeted by the command staff and many crewmembers to celebrate her accomplishment. The young pilot pumps her arms in the air and tries to remove her helmet before she collapses from radiation poisoning.
*In sickbay, Kara Thrace talks to Kat, whose exposure to the cloud's radiation was too extreme. Thrace recants a part of her conversation with Kat and her origins, and tries unsuccessfully to leave Kat's bedside with a smile before leaving the dying pilot with a bottle of sleeping pills as a gesture of self-euthanization. Kat thanks her.
*Admiral Adama stands by Kat's bedside immediately after Thrace's departure. Kat attempts to confess her past, but Adama tells her that her past will not change the heroic thing she did for the Fleet. He gives her the status of CAG once more, a position she held from colonization of New Caprica to Major Adama's return to Galactica, despite the fact that Kat will not survive to fly again.
*Adama stays at Kat's bedside, talking with her and how he would have loved to have had a third child, commenting that he, like his ex-wife, Caroline, would have liked a daughter.
*Some time later, the pilots assemble in their ready room as Admiral Adama changes the pilot organization chart, placing Kat as the CAG.
*Kara Thrace enters Galacticas memorial hallway and tacks a photo of Kat on the board. She cries quietly as Lee Adama looks on from a distance.

On a basestar
*Baltar notices that Number Three keeps going off somewhere and wonders what she is doing. Caprica-Six tells him that the other Cylons are also concerned about Three's activities.
*Baltar confronts Three about her unexplained absences and surmises that she has been dying and resurrecting over and over again.
*Baltar and Three discuss the final five Cylon agents, who are apparently the figures Three has been seeing between life and death. Baltar wonders aloud if he could be one of them, making him a hero to the Cylons instead of a traitor to the Colonials. Three tries to hold onto the memory of what they look like, but it always fades. Her drawings of them aren't very distinct.
*Baltar and Three visit the Hybrid's chamber. Against Three's advice, Baltar reaches out to touch the Hybrid and she grabs his hand. More coherent than usual, the Hybrid says a number of cryptic clues and returns to her usual behavior.
*Baltar deduces from the clues that the Hybrid is referring to a planet where the Eye of Jupiter can be found, as well as something related to the final five. Baltar states that he is convinced that everything the Hybrid says has meaning.

Questions
*Was the Fleet-wide failure of food-processing systems a result of sabotage? If so, were Cylons responsible, or someone else?
*Was assisted suicide an accepted practice in the Colonies, even if not by a practicing physician?
*Are there going to be radiation consequences for the pilots exposed to the conditions of the star cluster, especially those pilots who did in fact have a black indicator?
*How many pilots and crew were lost on the two civilian ships Adriatic and Carina? Will their loss cause problems for the civilians that used to live on them?
*Were there any other ships lost besides Adriatic and Carina?
*Other Cylons were seen to attend Three during her resurrection in "Hero". How has she been able to keep subsequent resurrections secret?
**Are the 'nurse' Cylons at the Resurrection ship aware of Three's attempts to discover who the final five are? If so, are they remaining silent in hope that Three would accomplish this task?
*During the brief martial law when Roslin was ousted as President, she and Apollo hid inside a meat refigeration locker. Was all the "real" food, such as meat, fresh fruits, and drinks all used up or left behind on New Caprica?
*If there was no food contamination, how long would the Fleet's food supply have lasted?
*Is there a centralized food distribution system in place for the Fleet?
*Why are the final five Cylons kept so secretive? Why do they exist in the place between death and resurrection?
*Who will supplant Kat as Squadron leader?

Analysis
*Adama may have already abandoned his declaration from "Unfinished Business", as his treatment of Kat during her final hours suggests.
*The ranking shuffle resumes in this episode: Tigh returns to the CIC as XO, sending Helo back to the flight lines as a senior flight officer (his rank of Captain seems unaffected). At the end of the episode, Kat is posthumously given honorary CAG status, although Apollo is still de facto CAG.
*Baltar calls the Number Three "D'Anna", to which she responds. This may indicate acceptance of Baltar's custom of referring to and addressing some models by their "human" names—in this same scene, Baltar refers to "the relevant Simon" and in prior episodes refers to "one of the Dorals"' views on toilet paper. This custom is shared with the other humans, such as Ellen Tigh who mentions "one of the Brother Cavils", and Adama, who refers to both the Ragnar Anchorage copy and the stowaway copy in "Flesh and Bone" as "Leoben Conoy".
*Gaeta was one of the few in CIC not to applaud Tigh's return to duty. This may be due to lingering feelings of resentment over his treatment by Tigh and the Circle.
*Since this model has memories of viewing the footage acquired by the Galactica copy of D'anna Biers on Caprica (seen in flashback in "Hero"), we can rule out the possibility that both are the same individual.
*Number Three does not know what the final five Cylon agent models look like, at least not consciously.
*No anti-radiation injections were seen to be used by the pilots. Unless they were administered offscreen this could either mean that the Fleet's supplies are used up, or that even the medication doesn't help against such intense levels of stellar radiation. Oddly, pilots were not issue with anti-radiation suits (worn by the deck crew) or put on a rotation to limit their individual exposure.
*While it has not been conclusively established that the five figures are in fact the "Final Five" Cylon agents, the first sketch of the alleged "Final Five" that Number Three shows Baltar depicts two male and three female figures. If this proves accurate then of the twelve Cylon models there are six males and six females.
*Baltar's grooming has declined steadily since the Fall of the Colonies. While no longer a messy drunk as he was on New Caprica, he has grown a scraggly and untrimmed beard.
* One of D'Anna's sketches in particular appears to depict the profile of a mustached and bearded male with long hair—a possible reference to Baltar; later in the episode after Baltar communes with the hybrid, D'Anna says "Could there be a connection between their gods and ours?" where "their" refers to the polytheistic human pantheon and "ours," the Cylon single god, a possible slip on her part indicating that she believes Baltar to be a Cylon, or that D'Anna believes Baltar has accepted the Cylon religion, and so no longer counts him as following human beliefs.
*"Find the hand that lies in the shadow of the light, in the eye of the husband of the eye of the cow." is what the Hybrid tells Baltar. Baltar analyses "the eye of the cow" to be Hera (since she was referred to as "cow-eyed Hera"). The husband of Hera is Jupiter, which yields: "Find the hand that lies in the shadow of the light, in the Eye of Jupiter". The Eye of Jupiter is also written about in the ancient texts, which prompts Three to believe there may be a connection to the Colonial and Cylon gods. According to Baltar, the Eye of Jupiter is most likely some kind of artifact (like the Arrow of Apollo), located on a planet in the shadow of a bright star cluster. The "hand" is believed to be a reference to the number five, meaning the Eye of Jupiter will contain or point to information about the Final Five. Interestingly, the Fleet has gathered protein from a planet in a bright star cluster in this episode. This will probably mean that the Cylons will run into the Colonials when they find the right planet, much like in "A Measure of Salvation", but reversed as the Cylons found the Lion's Head Nebula before the Fleet did.
*The possible connection between the Colonial pantheon and the Cylon god which Three comments on was previously indicated in "Exodus, Part I", by the statements of Oracle Dodona Selloi, with whom Three conferred.

Notes
*This is one of the few times an Air Group organization chart is visible. Kat, as the honorary CAG, is in the top slot, while directly below her are the squadron leaders, which are Apollo, Starbuck, Two Times, and a fourth whose name is never visible to the camera. Other names visible on the chart include Narcho, Switch, Chopper, Raygun, Helo, Fuzzy, Athena, Racetrack, and Sever. Pilots and ECOs may be listed below their squadron leaders in descending order of seniority, as both Helo and Hot Dog, for example, are listed directly beneath Starbuck, and the two of them are among the senior flight officers for Galactica.
*A perilous journey by the "rag-tag" Fleet in the Original Series, where pilots are also critical to the Fleet's safety, appears in its series premiere, "Saga of a Star World."
*"The Passage" was written by Galactica newcomer Jane Espenson. The episode arose when the show brought in Dr. Kevin Grazier, a scientist from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, who talked about how one would navigate through space; how one would figure out how to get from one point in the to universe to, for example, Earth. Grazier's talk prompted the story at the heart of Espenson's episode.
*On the memorial wall Kat's picture is placed below the one of Reilly's girlfriend she herself put there in "Scar".
*This episode marks the destruction of two civilian ships, the Adriatic and Carina. This will likely result in more crowded conditions on the other ships in the Fleet.
*This is the second episode in which dialog has been censored in the Sci Fi Channel broadcast. Starbuck sarcastically proclaims she gave Dr. Cottle "head" in response to Kat saying she gave him her protein bar.
*Though the actual dialog between Baltar and D'Anna employs the name "Jupiter", the closed-captioning subtitles uses "Zeus" instead. This discrepancy and the question as to why the Roman name Jupiter would be used instead of its Greek counterpart may indicate that the original script employed the name Zeus before. However there is precedence for using gods from the Roman pantheon; namely Mars and Mercury.
*Brendan "Hot Dog" Constanza is now the only survivor of the three nuggets originally introduced in "Act of Contrition".
*Hoshi appears in the CIC, sharing Dualla's duties. Other Pegasus crew members to have made the transfer to Galactica include Marcia "Showboat" Case, seen on the flight roster at the end of the episode, and Noel "Narcho" Allison seen in "Torn".
*When Starbuck puts Kat's picture on the memorial wall, a note just above it reads "God rest your souls" - not "Gods rest your souls," a rare departure from the established Colonial polytheism.

Noteworthy Dialogue
*Adama and Tigh discuss the food shortage
::Adama: I hear they're still eating paper. Is that true?
::Tigh: No. Paper shortage.

*Starbuck gives a last minute pep talk to the pilots
::Starbuck: Remember, we're all flying solo on this mission. So that means there'll be nobody there to bitch slap you if you start to get tired or start seeing little toasters on your wing.

*Baltar and Three confront the Hybrid:
::Hybrid: [Suddenly grabs Baltar's hand] Intelligence! A mind that burns like a fire!
::Baltar: Yes, I'm here.
::Hybrid: Find the hand that lies in the shadow of the light, in the eye of the husband of the eye of the cow.
::Baltar: [Removes his hand from the Hybrid's tank.]
::Three: You all right? It just speaks nonsense, doesn't it?
::Baltar: I don't think anything it says is nonsense.

Official Statements
In Ron Moore's blog on July 27th, 2006:

:"We were pretty excited to have Jane too. I actually took Jane's first pitch way back in my early days at Star Trek and I had the pleasure of buying what turned out to be her first sale. I hadn't seen her since, but I'd followed her career from afar and was very proud to see her do so well. Turns out that Jane was a huge fan of Galactica and really wanted to do a script for us, so we jumped on the chance. I think we're all hoping that we could get her on staff at some point in the future, but we'll have to wait and see how everything shakes out for Season Four -- and whether she's even available, she's very much in demand these days. Her episode this year is "The Passage" (originally Ep 9) and deals with a harrowing voyage of the rag-tag fleet and focuses on Kat."

Jane Espenson discusses writing the episode

: "My episode originally had a Laura story threaded through it that had to be cut in later drafts because there was just too much story in the episode as a whole, and I missed it, just because she was so much fun to write. And any character with a strong opinion on what's going on in the episode is always fun and easy to write.

: "The hardest stuff to write in this episode wasn't because of any hard-to-capture voices but because there was a big chunk of mission-planning exposition that had to be done as clearly and as quickly as possible. That is always the very hardest stuff to write, setting down the rules without sounding like a textbook. It was challenging, but so nice when I felt like I'd gotten it right."

Epsenson talks about the scientific aspects of the episode:

: "When I was given this episode, all the technical stuff about globular star clusters was given to me. And the writers were really patient in explaining technical stuff about the FTL drive and jump co-ordinates and the fact that you can't talk on the wireless over a jump-boundary -- I originally had Galactica in contact with Sharon-Athena while she out in the cluster doing her original recon, but that obviously didn't make sense. I received lots of help from the show's tech adviser, who is wonderful, and who explained all sorts of interesting things to me about how radiation differs from radioactivity and how gravitational forces are more likely to damage large ships than small ones.... The research that I really did on my own was about figuring out how the fleet had been making food prior to this crisis. The explanation was cut for length, but in one draft it was stated that the fleet "grew" meat from cloned cells and that it was this system that got so badly contaminated. As for the algae, I think that was already in place when I was given the story... it's just an obvious alternative protein source."

Espenson discusses the Hybrid's dialogue:

: "I wrote this for the Hybrid in that pre-grab moment: 'Seascape portrait of the woman-child cavern of the soul under pressure-heat ratio--' which is, I think, what we hear. But there is at least one BSG writer who can generate pages of beautiful, haunting and resonant Hybrid-speak at will. He writes lots of her stuff and more power to him!"

Espenson discusses scenes that were cut from the script due to time constraints:

: "I think I got a more-than-fair edit! I was amazed! The draft that was shot was way too long -- we all knew it was too long. So lots of scenes had to be cut -- two Adama/Kat scenes that I can think of. A Lee/Dualla scene, a Lee/Starbuck scene, an Adama/Tigh scene, lots and lots of Sharon/Helo stuff... the fact that the episode holds together, that it makes sense and has emotional punch... wow. And that's not even counting lots of Cylon stuff, Laura stuff and Anders stuff that got cut before shooting! This show is so rich, the world is so full, and there are emotions along every axis between every pairing of characters, that it's incredibly easy to find things that you just HAVE to explore. This is part of what gives the series such a great voyeuristic quality... as a viewer you just KNOW that there are scenes that have played out between these people that you have never seen, and you get to infer what they must've been. I like that the edit of this episode hints at the things unseen. And I love that despite the time pressures, moments were allowed to play out... Kat watching her fellow pilots suffer, Kat in the mirror, the final hospital scene... I think it was a lovely edit."

Espenson discusses fan's expectation of humor from her stories and their pertinence to "The Passage":

: "I know people expect humor from me. I hope they understand why, given a story about Kat's redemptive and unglamorous death, I kept the funny knob turned down -- couldn't resist the giddy Tigh-Adama scene, however, and my personal favorite line the piece, Baltar's "You've got goo in your hair." Anyway, I hope the fans liked what they saw; I hope it felt real; I hope I get to write more Battlestar episodes, and get to play some more with these wonderful characters and their tragic, human, uplifting lives."

:This article involves the caravan of faster-than-light-capable civilian ships in the Re-imagined Series. For information on its sublight counterpart in the Original Series, see The Fleet (TOS). For information on the military ships that protected the Twelve Colonies before their demise, see Colonial Fleet.<br/><br/>

The Fleet is the convoy of ships that contain what is effectively the last survivors of humanity after the Cylon Attack. The Fleet forms the backdrop of the drama of the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica series.

Unofficially, many viewers refer to the Fleet as the "RTF"; "Rag Tag Fleet", or more fully, "RTFF." These nicknames come from the term "Rag Tag Fugitive Fleet," a name used in the opening credits voiceover (performed by Lorne Greene) describing the civilian refugee fleet from the Original Series.

Overview
"The Fleet" begins as a convoy of about sixty stranded commercial and civilian ships around the area of Caprica assembled by new President Laura Roslin in the immediate aftermath of the Cylon Attack (Miniseries). Of these ships, only a handful were Colonial military craft, such as Raptor 478 and three Viper Mark VII fighters. One ECO, Crashdown, is called a "refugee from Triton," suggesting that he escaped that battlestar's destruction with Roslin's convoy.

Twenty ships of the convoy are abandoned to an imminent Cylon attack because they lacked FTL drives. The remainder of the Fleet joins with battlestar Galactica, the only known surviving warship in the first months after the events of the Fall of the Twelve Colonies. The Fleet represents the last vestige of humanity. The political and social troubles of the Fleet as it wanders through space function as a metaphor for all of humanity, since the Fleet literally is what is left of humanity in the television series.

The phrase "the Fleet" functions not only as a signifier for the actual ships of the convoy, but as a substitute for the people on board, and therefore for mankind. Usage of the term "the Fleet" has not gained more than an informal acceptance, as can be seen by President Roslin's continued use of the term President of the Twelve Colonies. This may be interpreted as either an expression of hope that eventually the people on board the ships of the Fleet will reestablish themselves on a new colony permanently, or a psychological inability to confront that the Fleet may be the only home that humanity knows for a very long time.

Saul Tigh's assertion in "The Farm" that the twenty four ships which departed with the Laura Roslin faction during her insurrection represented "almost a third of the fleet" imply that the number of ships in the Fleet is approximately in the mid-70's.

Ships
* The ships that comprise the Fleet feature a type of security launch key used to activate the ship's systems (Precipice} The keys are unique to each vessel and are extremely difficult to copy.
* Wedge-shaped vessel, seen briefly during the end of Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II.
It is possible that these vessels could be one of the mentioned-only ships but as yet it is not possible to confirm this.

In the episode "The Farm", 24 ships leave the Fleet to return to Kobol. Dualla provides the following breakdown:
*12 transports - incl. the Astral Queen, and the Gemenon Traveller
*7 freighters
*3 construction platforms
*1 private cruiser
*1 mining ship - the Monarch.

Demographics
A few points of information are available concerning the demographics of the Fleet. In "33", before the destruction of the Olympic Carrier, there were 5,251 survivors from Sagittaron and 49,998 total survivors. In "Home, Part I", the Laura Roslin faction left the Fleet with 18,000 individuals, of which 9,500 were Gemenons and 6,250 were Capricans. At that time the total population of the fleet was 47,857.

This information is sparse, but it gives a general idea of the population breakdown of the Fleet if a few assumptions are made for the sake of argument.
*Note that Gemenon and Caprica had more citizens in the Roslin faction alone than Sagittaron had in the entire Fleet. The Twelve Colonies are clearly not represented in equal proportion.
*Before the destruction of the Olympic Carrier, Sagittaron natives made up 10.50% of the fleet. Solely for the purpose of argument, we assume that the Olympic Carriers population breakdown was identical to the rest of the fleet's and that Sagittaron continues to make up 10.50% of the Fleet's total population.
*The figures from the Roslin faction can be viewed in several ways:
<div style="float:right; margin:10px"></div>
:*ASSUMPTION 1: All Gemenons and Capricans jumped to Kobol with the Roslin faction.
::*Caprica: 6,250 persons (13.06%)
::*Gemenon: 9,500 persons (19.85%)
::*Sagittaron: 5,026 persons (10.50%)
::*Others: 27,081 (56.59%)<br clear="both">
<div style="float:right; margin:10px"></div>
:*ASSUMPTION 2: All Gemenons jumped to Kobol with the Roslin faction, lured by the "religion card", but Caprican portion of the Roslin faction was representative of the Fleet.
::*Caprica: 28,204 persons (58.93%)
::*Gemenon: 9,500 persons (19.85%)
::*Sagittaron: 5,026 persons (10.50%)
::*Others: 5,127 persons (10.72%)<br clear="both">
<div style="float:right; margin:10px"></div>
:*ASSUMPTION 3: Caprican and Gemenon portions of the Roslin faction were representative of the fleet.
::*Caprica: 16,617 persons (34.72%)
::*Gemenon: 25,258 persons (52.78%)
::*Sagittaron: 5,026 persons (10.50%)
::*Others: 956 (2.00%)<br clear="both">
*Although it is plausible that the Caprican population is substantially larger than the other colonies, as Colonial Heavy 798 was in the vicinity when the attack began, and was the nucleus around which the fleet rallied, it is unlikely that the populations of each colony are grossly unequal, or else the Quorum of Twelve would be a very poor system of government. The likeliest scenario is therefore probably somewhere in between Assumptions 1 and 2, with nearly all of the Gemenon population (drawn by the "religion card") and a large portion of the Caprican population leaving with Roslin.
*Alternatively, it is in fact possible that the populations of the colonies were grossly unequal. Though the structure of the Quorum of Twelve appears to maintain at least a fiction that the colonies were roughly equal, we know next to nothing about how the governmental system of the colonies was established or evolved over time. Indeed, the United States Senate, for example, by design expressly assumes that the various states constituting it are 'equal' even though this is clearly not the case in terms of their respective populations. Furthermore, the fact that a system of government is 'poor' or else not representatively proportional does not mean it cannot actually be implemented and even survive for long periods of time.

As for population distribution, we know the population of Galactica (2,693 as of Water), the Olympic Carrier (1,345 as of 33) and Astral Queen (1,500 as of Bastille Day, retconned up from 500 in the Miniseries). There are 176 civillians in the cargo hold of Colonial One in "Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II". The fleet is stated at about 75 ships in "Resistance", retconned up from 40 in the mini.
*Going by the 75 ship count, the remaining ships besides Galactica and the Astral Queen each carry about 600 persons on average.
*The 23 ships that left with the Laura Roslin faction, apart from the Astral Queen, would have an average population of about 720 persons per ship.

Notes
In the Miniseries, astute viewers may recognize three spacecraft with notable resemblances of ships from other SF universes. These ships aren't considered a canonical part of the series or the Fleet, but their appearance adds a bit of humor and pays homage to other notable science fiction and their creative staff.

* Serenity, the central ship from the TV series "Firefly" and the motion picture, "Serenity", appears briefly in the sky outside the window of a doctor's office where viewers first see Laura Roslin. The ship does not appear in the Fleet.

* The original USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) from the original Star Trek TV series makes a cameo in the last shot of the Fleet as Elosha chants a prayer in the memorial service near the end of the Miniseries. Look to the upper right corner for the ship in a still frame. All season 1 opening credits use this shot, so Enterprise makes a very quick appearance with each of the first 13 episodes (This is best viewed from the Season 1 DVD set).

*The ill-fated Botanical Cruiser was added in homage to the Agro Ship from the original Battlestar Galactica TV series, which in turn were the re-used models from the SF film Silent Running, a Universal/MCA movie that special effects guru John Dykstra worked on a few years prior to the Original Series. The ship reappears in the regular series, despite its destruction in the Miniseries, suggesting that similar ships survive and exist in the Fleet.
}}
The Viper Mark VII was the Colonial Fleet's latest update to the venerable Viper Mark II primary space superiority fighter / attack craft. Capable of atmospheric flight, the Viper is a single-seat craft mounting three kinetic energy weapons (KEWs), as well as having hardpoints beneath the wings for mounting missiles, munitions pods and other ordnance (The Hand of God).

The Mark VII was the front-line variant of the Viper design, retaining the Mark II's general layout but adding fully integrated avionics that provide superior battle management and flight information for the pilot.

Ironically, it was the incorporation of the new integrated systems that prevented the majority of Mark VIIs from being effective during the Cylon attack: as with the majority of Colonial Fleet, the Mark VIIs suffer fatal computer system failures on contact with Cylon forces. Thanks to a Cylon agent's relationship with Dr. Gaius Baltar, scientist and programmer of the navigation software project, the navigational software in use onboard the majority of Colonial Fleet vessels contained backdoors that allow the Cylons to infiltrate a vessel's network by wireless signals and disable its power systems. While the problem could be overcome by removing the navigational upgrade compromised by the Cylons, this information is not discovered in time to be of major benefit to the surprised and hard-pressed Colonial forces.

Technical Specifications
Avionics
The Mark VII cockpit is almost totally computerized. There are far fewer analog gauges and more reliance on a more powerful central flight computer. This gives the Mark VII pilot far greater control of the fighter as well as, presumably, greater targeting control in a dogfight.

However, the latest and last software upgrade, the CNP upgrade, introduced a fatal flaw (inserted by a Cylon agent) in the Mark VII that led to the virtual annihilation of most of these fighters in the opening wave of the Cylon attack.

The surviving Mark VII fighters on both Galactica and Pegasus were likely retrofitted to older avionics packages to replace the compromised CNP, or other subsystems in the fighter were augmented or removed to minimize or eliminate further infiltration.

As of "Scar", Pegasus had begun to use her onboard construction facilities to produce replacement Vipers. Enough materials were mined in the asteroid field to produce two full squadrons. Presumably, these are Mark VII Vipers fitted with Cylon-proof avionics. Also, since Pegasus joined the fleet, the Mark IIs have been steadily phased out in favor of the retrofitted Mark VIIs, of which many were intact aboard Pegasus.

Performance
*While the Mark II could rotate 180 degrees vertically in .35 seconds (Act of Contrition), it is presumed that the Mark VII has an equal or better performance ratio.

Notes
* Since Galactica only had 40 Viper Mark IIs aboard as part of its museum, they needed as many fighters as possible. The remaining Mark VII's advanced computer systems were refitted to resist Cylon infiltration. However, since this is not how the Mark VII was designed to fly, the craft is increasingly more difficult to handle and can only be flown by the most experienced pilots such as Apollo and Starbuck. Galactica has roughly 6-8 Mark VIIs on board after the Cylon attack (Scattered, Flight of the Phoenix). (Source: Scifi.com series website)

* The stern section of a Viper is distinctive because of the offset "intakes" mounted just behind the cockpit. The port / starboard "intake" nacelles incorporate small but powerful reverse thrust engines that can quickly counter a Viper's forward momentum in an emergency (The Hand of God).

* According to David Weddle during the Scar podcast the Mark VII cockpit design "was actually laid out based on, I think it's either the F-16 or the F-18." The side-mounted control stick more closely resembles that of the F-16, which is appropriate given the "Viper" nickname of the jet (that was initially the General Dynamics codename for the project, which was in turn named for the TOS Viper).

* Also revealed in the podcast for Scar is that the full cockpit interior for the Viper Mark VII was built for the episode "Scar". "Flight of the Phoenix" had paved the way for the construction of the full cockpit when "the line producers and the production designers figure[d] out ways to move money around that basically bought us this cockpit because we had built the stealth fighter." The cockpit interior may have been constructed at the same time the Blackbird was being built.

* Like the Original Series' Viper, the weapons fire of Vipers on the Re-Imagined Series is red, however, the button is on the center of the joystick for the Mark VII, and the left for the Mark II (33).

* According to Battlestar Galactica: The Official Companion, when creating the design of the Viper Mark VII, Gary Hutzel took a prexisting design from the 2003 video game loosely based on a mix of the Original Series and upcoming Miniseries, then "did some modifications, and that became the Viper Mark VII".
# Mazzy 17:12, 21 April 2006 (CDT) This is site is a reference, it would be misleading to publish anything other than citable information. I would vote the same no matter who we were talking about and spoilers without a named source seem to be a chance of forever cataloging misinformation. If this were a vote about sources and not a person I would be more comfortable but as it stands, I don't feel I can change my vote in good faith. I think spoilers except ones coming directly from writers or cast should be left off all together. If there is a more appropriate way for me to express this than this vote, I will consider changing it if not this is my input.-- Mazzy 12:00, 2 May 2006 (CDT)
#*Dogger 20:38, 21 April 2006 (CDT) <del>I've never heard KR 'reveal' anything that I haven't already seen from another source. I have always seen him as just somebody who reads the same things I read and then repeats them in another venue, but with an extra helping of certainty.</del> He often fails to differentiate what he is reporting from his own speculation, an oversight compounded by the fact that his speculation is hampered by a lack of attention to detail. <del>Perhaps what he does might have some value as a 'digest' of what is being talked about, but I don't see why anyone but the most naive listener would consider him as a primary source.</del>
#*I have struck out parts of my comments that seem to have been proven wrong by some of the history presented in the thread on Skiffy. However, I cannot in good conscience change my vote because of the simple fact that I don't think that anyone claiming an anonymous source should really be considered a primary source, even if that source is genuine. Perhaps 'blacklist' is the wrong word. I simply see this as a test case for what is the appropriate kind of evidence that should be cited as authoritative. Singling out KR is probably unfair, but that doesn't change what I honestly think to be not an appropriate primary source for a wiki. If there were a vote to have a policy against citing any anonymous source as a primary source, then I would be in favour of that too. I consider this vote to be just an example of what I think should be an overall principle. For example, if KR were to name his source, then I don't see any reason not to consider citing that information. The problem I have is not with KR's honesty in particular -- it's with the idea of citing a source without giving the reader the benefit of evaluating its reliability, and that includes anonymity as well as the mixing of facts with speculation.--Dogger 19:36, 23 April 2006 (CDT)
While KoenigRules and several of his collleagues insist that he does indeed have access to some sort of spoilers, all of them still will not confirm the veracity of these sources. Seeing as this is what they would do both if they were REAL and if they were NOT REAL sources, we thus arrive at an impasse. Therefore, I want to find some civil compromise over this: I'm a Uniter, not a Divider, and if we start turning on each other Rick Berman's new crackpot scheme to make Star Trek XI: Starfleet Academy will eat us BSG fans alive. <br>Proposal: If KoenigRules promises to be more careful in the future in his interviews, to *make it clear* when he is giving away direct information from his source(s), and when he is making a speculation based on either this purported source material, or just his own personal opinion, we will reverse our decision to hold a vote to reject him as a reliable source. <br> For example, if KoenigRules says in an interview "I think Baltar is a Cylon", he should really make it clear that that is just his opinion and not supported by any spoiler source information that he might have, as news sites might miscontrue his comments and lead to a world of trouble. However, the matter of HollyWoodNorthReport itself, which has come under frequent attack from many sites for improperly forgetting to use citations when they source material from other fansites, should be considered a separate matter.
In lieu of all this, I am thinking of further clarifying the section defining what sources we should and should not use on the wiki. In particular, sources that are anonymous should not be referenced (this is fairly common sense, but isn't explicitly stated0. Also, for reference, we should probably add a definitive list of sources, grouped by categories from "uses anonymous source" to "trusted primary sources". ::We would set it up just like the "Image tagging policy" page. The only question is how do we define what is legit and what is not? If we consider how big the internet and how vast information can be found, anyone who reports on infomration at a regular basis could be considered legit, as long as the information is true.
From Peter
Alright then. Having spoken with KR and listened to his latest podcast, the following is now clear to me:
*KR is not merely re-reporting information gleaned from other sources available to the public. The overlap between the information in the Selloi Dedona casting side and the report made on the 11th is remarkable, but the information he supplied on the 25th cannot be accounted for in light of other publicly available material.
*KR asserts that he has a single, anonymous source for all his reports.
*KR has complied with every request we've made of him, clearly separating his personal speculation from information supplied by his source.

It is therefore my opinion that he has done everything we can reasonably expect him to do, considering the anonymity of his source. I therefore believe that singling him out for blacklisting is inappropriate. I am changing my opinion on the above vote to "oppose", and I support Joe's desire to let the matter drop and refocus the discussion on the nature of our sources.

The Spoiler Policy, arrived at by grudging compromise last autumn, makes the following statement:

<blockquote>All spoiler information must have a source, whether in the form of a URL or a printed publication text, on the talk page of the spoilerific article. For printed publication text, a copy must be scanned and uploaded to the wiki in the form of a JPG or PNG, and posted on the talk page of the article containing the spoilerific content.</blockquote>

Naturally, this arises from a desire for Battlestar Wiki to be a reliable source. The nature of a wiki allows anybody to contribute news and information, which must be checked by a policy such as this. It would obviously be unacceptable to allow anybody to pass off ungrounded speculation as reported fact, bolstered in reputation by dint of its presence on the wiki.

However, the very nature of spoiler reporting renders impossible the goal of maintaining perfect accuracy while reporting on episodes not scheduled to air for months to come. Even the very best sources we can hope to come by - legitimate casting sides and call sheets, for example - may refer to script elements that end up being cut from the final broadcast. Set reports may refer to scenes which are filmed but not included, or be reported out of context.

This is an inevitability to which we must resign ourselves if we intend to report on spoilers at all. However, it can be mitigated by requiring attribution to individual reporters. The real problem with KR's reports is the anonymity of his source. Casting sides and call sheets which arrive in their original format are unlikely to be forged, and set reports substantiated by photographic evidence, but all we have to go on with regard to KR is his good reputation.

I find it awkward to judge submissions here based on such a nebulous concept as the reporter's reputation, which is why my personal preference leans to reporting only information which can be backed up by tangible evidence or sourced to individuals involved in production. However, it should be acknowledged that by excluding anonymous reports such as KR's, we will be depriving ourselves of a prolific source of timely and apparently reasonably accurate information.

Because I consider this a real and important dilemma, I want to solicit comment form other users on the issue of anonymous sources. Particularly relevant questions:
*Should they be allowed at all?
*If so, should we discriminate between different sources on the basis of reputation?
*If so, how should reputation be determined, and who should be responsible for determining it?

: (Intro) First of all, I listened to the podcast live. There was quite a number of people in the chat channel inclduing myself. Along with KR, was merv, Ribby, and a few other people that were in the orginal flame war on SciFi.com.
: (Question 1) anonymous Spoliers are the worest. First of all, they are considered Wikipedia:Hearsay which means the context of the spolier or information can change and exaserations can be made by the reporter. (From the Podcast on Question #1) When I listened last night he said he took through notes on what his source said, to make sure he kept the information straight. Usually I have pretty good ears, but I didn't hear any paper's or him lean away from the phone.
: (Question 2) If gateworld to report this as a spolier, and like this podcast OR link even us as the source with US sourceing it as an annoymous source, Gateworld did not list this current radio cast as the source for them knowning the new title. This page was posted a good few hours before the radio show. They have yet to cite or deem these current spoliers on the website.
: (Question 3) I can not answer this, because I think offical sites, offical news orginzations, are the best place. If this came from Katte's website, or Apollo's then I would be OMG, but it didn't. It came from a source that can not even verify if the spoliers are correct. Teasers are offical spoliers, you can choose to watch them or not, but they are offical. RDM podcasts are offical, RDM blog. etc... etc..
: (Conclustion) If he was to go on the show stright till october, we would know all of Season 3 BEFORE it happened. For this, I voted to not allow KR be a source, even if another "anonymous" soruce, and only allow offical spoliers to be reported. --Shane (T - C - E) 13:45, 26 April 2006 (CDT)

:I'm not that keen on using anonymous sources at all. I don't think it's realistic for us to be everything to everyone, and would rather see us strive to be the concise, accurate, organized repository of BSG knowledge (and let the new sites and forums handle the spoiler info). I could see maybe having a "news" pages with links to such spoilers, but actually putting content into the article that we have no way of verifying (and could prove to be false) seems like a stretch.
:Maybe there's a way for us to be able to "report" the information, without compromising our accuracy. We could, for example, limit spoiler postings to spoiler news areas (which nobody updates anyway), and obvious spoiler pages (like the next season, and upcoming episodes). People reading those pages expect spoiler information, as there is no canon information available yet. The important thing to keep in mind would be making sure that once the page passes out of the realm of spoilers into to normal article space (by having an airdate, etc), all normal citation requirements must apply. It is a double standard, but there's a clearly demarcated line that could be observed/enforced, and if the spoilers end up being false it only ends up affecting the temporal accuracy of that particular spoiler page, and not the long-term accuracy of the page once aired. I would still prefer not seeing any anonymous sources in the regular article space, though, as the maintenance issues involved would potentially leave false spoiler information in place after the event occurs.
:Also, I'd like to see the above vote closed (since the context since it's opening has changed quite dramatically). I'd rather not change my vote, I'd vote that way again given the same information, but "re-voting" based on the new information seems a bit of the Monday-morning quarterbacking ("I'd a double bagged it.")--Steelviper 13:47, 26 April 2006 (CDT)
Having read everything you guys said and listening to the last show, here's my thoughts:
I entirely agree with the three points about KR Peter said; he met our requests and was careful about saying "I guess" "that's what I think", etc., and he incorporated it into his interview smoothly (didn't stop in his tracks and say "everyone be warned this is just what I think, websites shouldn't etc etc etc) which was good for him, not affecting his interview drastically. I think that worked out well for everyone. Nextly, I am actually now quite possitive that he does indeed have some sort of spoiler source, the exact nature of which is of course unknown, but still it is now clear to me that he isn't just basing all of his information on casting sides and public information, but has a source no one else does. The real problem, then, has changed: how do we address spoilers which are based on a reporter who has a reputation of providing on the whole accurate spoilers in the past, and uses an anonymous source which nonetheless seems to be a "real" source?
:"Should they be allowed at all? If so, should we discriminate between different sources on the basis of reputation? If so, how should reputation be determined, and who should be responsible for determining it?"
This was an important set of questions Peter, and I think that a new subsection on our sources policy page should be openned up to discuss these questions raised in more detail. Further, I agree entirely with you and Joe's feelings that this vote here should be "wiped", singling out a single person would be inappropriate, that we should "let the matter drop and refocus the discussion on the nature of our sources."

KR's sources thus seem to generally be real and he's not just making things up, but that raises all sorts of questions; as said above, these sources tend to be based on early ideas or scripts and are subject to change even if the reports on them were truthfully saying what the production team thought they were going to do, or might be scenes that even get filmed, but ultimately deleted and possibly becoming deleted scenes that are in fact contradicted by scenes that appear in the final episode rendering them totally non-canonical; i.e. what if someone was on the set and saw the alternate cut of "Pegasus" where Boomer actually gets raped, then left the set and did not see that another take of this was filmed where she gets saved at the last minute?...this spoiler source would honestly report that they saw a scene where Boomer gets raped...however even though this scene was filmed, another scene was filmed which completely contradicted it and it is no longer real (as opposed to like, the deleted scenes such as when Roslin gets "Lest We Forget" from Billy in "33", which it appears CAN be thought of as more or less canonical and RDM said was only deleted for time reasons). So, the thing we really need to do is open another, more generic discussion on what to do about sources and spoilers.

My thoughts on the subject: Generally, we should keep spoiler information confined to news and season 3 pages; by it's very nature the season 3 page is right now filled with spoilers, and people going there are looking for them, and can see the spoiler sign on top. Also, *individual episode entries* for episodes that have not aired yet, such as "Occupation", are obviously going to contain spoilers and people go there to look for them, although even then *gigantic* spoilers should be in a highlighted spoiler-text box so you have to highlight specific plot information to see it. Once and a while there will be some exceptions where we can keep spoiler info on a character page, i.e.

We should be very sparing about allowing spoiler info like this off of the upcoming season and news pages. ***Still, I think our current spoiler warning policy is more or less okay in turns of placement.

What we need to really focus on is tagging our sources.

Ultimately, I think we actually have to run KoenigRules' spoilers: Gateworld, Galaticastation, and most other Battlestar Galactica news sites all tend to run them within a few days. We'd be seen as less reliable about our info if someone could get better info from somewhere else. ***I think the best idea would be to run these annonymous source spoilers only *after* an official news site like Gateworld or Galacticastation has already run them, like the day after they run them, we report that "Gateworld reported this story, it came from a radio interview which gave news from an anonymous source".

Sort of like the "Citation needed" tag, which appears in the article but as a little super-script? I think we need a new one of those which says "Information from an anonymous source, not confirmed" or something to that effect. Well those are just my early thoughts on the subject. Bottom line: ESSENTIALLY, KR does seem to have a real spoiler source, though he won't reveal it. We need to figure out how to handle anonymous sources like this. We should remove this vote as new information we've gotten has shed more light on the matter, and we should refocus this onto a more generic "who do we handle anonymous spoilers" discussion on our sources page. I agree with Farago and SteelViper. --The Merovingian (C - E) 14:49, 26 April 2006 (CDT)
:::If we allow a spolier to be listed like this it would be moot to what we are. This is not even offical. Spoliers with cast memebers are offical. We become something we are not supposed to be. If I reported annoymously that I heard BSG Wiki was closing and it was annoymous source, it could be anyone, however int his case, Joe is the only one. So a reported would ask joe is BSG closing, or joe would see it and he would look to see who spread that rumor because the fact is not true. Just put yourself in RDM shoes. What would he say to the production staff. Please do not leak spoliers. Actors are bound by the Wikipedia:SAG contracts in which they why can't reveal sources otherwise they can be seriously fined.
:::All spoilers should be sourced. If that source is anonymous, that should probably be specifically, explicitly noted, but I cannot see how it would hurt to include them if they are so marked. Each reader can then judge how much stock to put in an anonymous source individually, since it's a point on which reasonable people can differ. --CalculatinAvatar 15:53, 26 April 2006 (CDT)
From Joe
Well, I've created spoileranony with the following wording:

spoileranony

Basically, I feel that as long as we can cite a source for the rumor, we should report it as such. Care must be taken to ensure that we inform our readers that this information is rumor and speculation. Here are the criteria I'd prefer we use:

# As so long as it is reported on a valid news source (Gateworld, HNR, S2D), we can report it as well.
# We must take care to indicate that these are rumors. Therefore they may or may not be accurate. (Templates such as spoileranony reflect this view.)
# We must make sure that we are not the primary source for these rumors -- we aren't a news and rumors site. We're a reference. We summarize and scrutinized what's been reported, nothing more, nothing less. (I guess I'm repeating point 1, but I don't think I can emphasize this enough.)

I think we may have to create a page specifically dealing with rumors, such as Battlestar Wiki:Rumor Policy. Thoughts?

So that's what I have to say on that subject... Unless anything else comes to mind. :-) -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 16:34, 26 April 2006 (CDT)
::Episode List - needs to be updated.

:::I agree with the three points Joe has listed here. I'm unsure on precise implementation though but we'll be hammering that out for a while. --The Merovingian (C - E) 16:50, 26 April 2006 (CDT)

:First, let me address some of your points above:
:#What the heck is a valid news source? Anyone can start a blog and be a "valid news source". This goes back to the credibility/reputation problem.
:#If we do decide to permit anonymous spoilers, an ostentatious warning banner is the last thing we need. This is alread taken care of by the spoiler and spoiltext tags we already have. The anonymity of the source should simply be noted in the citation.
:I'm afraid I'm still against anonymous sources. If we report anonymous spoilers, we must take into account the reputation of the poster. Since we cannot do this in an objective and non-arbitrary manner, we therefore cannot report anonymous spoilers.
:Lastly, there is nothing that we would cover in a "Rumor" policy that we couldn't cover here. Let's not spread ourselves thin. --Peter Farago 19:09, 26 April 2006 (CDT)

: "What the heck is a valid news source?" A very good question indeed. In fact, you do raise many interesting points above and I believe we should consider very carefully whether or not we cite spoilers. I'm starting to reconsider that. Anyone else want to chime in? -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 20:19, 26 April 2006 (CDT)

:: I dislike spoilers and only read them because it's an effective necessity to edit here; they don't add anything that wouldn't be there after the episode anyway. My opinion on anonymous sources for them (under the assumption that spoilers in general will be cited) is above. --CalculatinAvatar 20:43, 26 April 2006 (CDT)

Joe, I think it's time to wrap this thing up. Let's formally close the blacklist vote and come to a conclusion about our policy on anonymous sources. --Peter Farago 01:57, 2 May 2006 (CDT)
The Rumor Vote
I am calling a vote on this issue; the blacklist vote is closed. Since it seems to be the consensus that we will not blacklist anyone, I am calling for a different vote, so as to make thing clear.

Here's the text of what we are voting on:

: Battlestar Wiki's primary goals do not include discerning which unofficial sources have valid information. Our primary goal is to report valid information in an encyclopedic medium. Due to this, we will not be citing rumors from any sources other than official channels (SCI-FI Channel, Ronald D. Moore, and current cast and crew). Any information from sources other than those in the list will be immediately removed from the wiki; actions which lead to the repeated reintroduction of said unofficial and unverifiable material will be dealt accordingly by an on-duty administrator.

Voting will end May 9, 2006 at 23:00 UTC.
In the Original series, Celestra is a civilian electronics ship within the Fleet, primarily responsible for work in the field of electronics, including Viper equipment development and testing.

Celestra has an extensive docking bay, capable of docking numerous Vipers and shuttle craft. The ship has very little in the way of creature comforts, such as recreational facilities; the bridge is accessible only from its aft quarter.

Like all ships in the Fleet, Celestra has a homing beacon to stay with the Fleet.

Celestra was most recently led by Commander Kronus, who captained the vessel from the time of the holocaust until his death (at the helm of Celestra, during an attempted mutiny). (Take the Celestra). The ship's former executive officer was Charka, the orchestrator of the failed mutiny, now presumably imprisoned. The Celestra's current commander structure is unknown.
A majority of Celestra crewmembers are electronics specialists, while a few are security guards, shuttle pilots and ship operators. To oppose executive officer Charka's abusive practices, such as double-shifting entire families, many crewmembers undertook a mutiny, attempting to steal a shuttle and escape to a remote planet. Their mutiny failed amidst a laser battle in the docking bay. They were captured and being transported to a hearing when they suddenly found themselves stranded in deep space in the Celestra's shuttle. The crewmembers used their electronics expertise to modify the shuttle's scanners to track ions, which pinpointed the Celestra's location, thereby rescuing themselves.

* Damon, electronics specialist, leader of first mutiny
* Aurora, shuttle pilot, former love of Starbuck
* Hermes, helm officer on bridge, participant in second mutiny

It is possible that Celestra was originally designed to be a work ship, with only its captain and a few others to remain permanently aboard; most of its crew would ferry on and off the ship in ten-centar (hour) shifts, for example. However, with the fleet constantly on the run post-holocaust, Celestra may have been forced to accommodate many more full-time crewmembers than its original design intended, hence the uprising.

The Sci-Fi Channel website has the Celestra as a ship listed in the Fleet of the re-imagined series. The Celestra was listed on vote tally boards in Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II, but has otherwise never been mentioned or seen. The Striker, however, appears to be of the same configuration as the Celestra.
Notes
The name of the ship may involve the name of nomadic Hindu musicians called the Kala Boppa who live in Rajasthan, India.

Alternately it could be taken as Mayan in origin. B'a means "head" or "first" in Mayan. Pakal means "shield". So taken together as B'a Pakal, it would be Mayan for "First Shield" which is a more likely translation of the name. Also note that Pakal was the name of the greatest ruler of the Mayan city Palenqué in Chiapas, Mexico.

Size of the Fleet
"Saul Tigh's assertion in 'The Farm' that the twenty four ships which departed with the Laura Roslin faction during her insurrection represented 'almost a third of the fleet' imply that the number of ships in the Fleet is approximately in the mid-70's."

Could it be that Tigh was referring to the population of the fleet instead of the number of ships? Passenger and crew numbers vary considerably from ship to ship, but Tigh may have done more accurate math on the ones that had jumped earlier, then did a quick--but dependable--estimate when the last batch jumped.

:No, because he wasn't looking at a readout of WHICH ships had left; all he heard was "24 ships have left" with no names, so he couldn't be basing it on population, it had to be ship number; of course the problem presented is what if he was rounding down? --Ricimer 21:47, 30 October 2005 (EST)

::Yeah, and then there's context, too--if somebody's looking at/listening to information about ships, they would probably frame their immediate response to the information in terms of ships, too. Rounding down would be the only way for the writers to explain their way out of the inconsistency. That, or the Colonel's been taking math lessons from Billy. . . . --BlueResistance 22:07, 30 October 2005 (EST)

:::From The Farm, we know that 24 ships was "almost a third of the fleet" - Tigh has no rason to underexagerate this. From Home, Part I, we know that the number of people in those 24 ships was actually a little over a third of the fleet's population. --Peter Farago 09:39, 31 October 2005 (EST)

Here's something to think about in regards to the size of the fleet and how it increased from 40 to over 70 since the mini-series. In the mini-series, Roslin sent Boomer out with her Raptor to gather other ships which ended up with a ragtag fleet of 40 or so FTL-capabale ships and some other ships that were future space debris when they had to be left behind. Adama sent out a Fleet Wide Communication for all capable ships to jump to the Ragnar Station and roundevous with the Galactica. It's possible that the 30 or so extra ships that the fleet ended up with were other craft that recieved the communication and headed to Ragnar without hooking up with Rolsin's group. Does anyone else agree with this assessment? I think it's valid considering the chaning size of the fleet and would justify the presence of more than one refinery ship (one arrived with Roslin's group and others showed up in response to Adama's message). --Ltcrashdown 20:16, 1 January 2006 (EST)

: I think you may be losing sight of what's, well, possible. Several things established in the Mini were changed for the series. When they were making the Mini, they weren't sure that there was going to be a series, so they didn't exactly plan on it. So those thirty ships came out of the script room. However, since then, we can probably better assume that the fleet size will be more consistant and, thus, worth talking about in terms of in-the-show reasons. --Day 20:39, 1 January 2006 (EST)

::It's an admirable attempt at a no-prize, but has some problems of its own - Adama's order only went out to military units: "Send a message to all the colonial military units. Use priority channel one. Message begins: "Am taking command of fleet." Apollo then reads the message in full from Colonial One: "To all colonial units, am taking command of fleet. All units ordered to rendezvous at Ragnar anchorage for regroup and counterattack. Acknowledge by same encryption protocol, Adama."

::So I think I have to agree with Day - unless each of the 30 ships happened to have a colonial military officer with military ciphers on board, I don't see how they could have found Galactica at Ragnar. --Peter Farago 20:49, 1 January 2006 (EST)

:::Well, it was worth a try. I thought I remembered the message only being for military ships, but if you consider that Dee or Gaeta are Cylons, then they may have 'accidentally' sent the message to non-military ships to increase the number of potential Cylon sleeper agents. Just a thought. I figured the message from Adama was just about the only way for more ships to arrive. --Ltcrashdown 21:27, 1 January 2006 (EST)
::I'm positive it's the Botanical Cruiser. They've re-used the FTL jump shot from the Mini Series at least once during season two. Durring "Scattered" when the fleet is making its emergencey jump there's a shot of various ships jumping away and right in the dead centre of the shot is the Botanical Cruiser from the Mini-Series. Kahran 20:32, 1 January 2006 (EST)

I noticed it too. Curious, either a mistake (like the B5 shot of the Agamenon destroying civilian transports) or it could be that it is a simalar fhip that IS equiped with FTL. It's possible that drives are used on ship as needed. If a ship is NOT intended to travel over interstallar distances, then it wouldn't need a FTL drive. FTL drives are probably costly to make, maitain, or operate -- not to mention the fuel/energy requirments. If a ship was only ment to operate in-system, an FTL drive might not have been cost effective. The inclusion of an ARGO ship is a tip of the hat to ship's inclusion in the opriginal series. In the original, stock footage of the ship from the movie SILENT RUNNING was used. In this new show, an original designed vessel was created -- probably because people knew about the stck footage use -- Centuri 06:29, 8 January 2006 (EST)

:The article for the Botanical Cruiser notes the origin. Yes, it was a recreation of the Agro Ship as an homage to the ships used in TOS, which were the redressed models used in Silent Running.. That the Botanical Cruiser may seem to appear in the fleet suggests (from a story POV) that there is a FTL-capable ship of similar appearance that joined the Fleet. I think it's a gaffe--the visual effects people used stock footage or models and didn't think. Also, understand that FTL in the RDM series is apparent travel, not true "warp drive"-like flight. See the FTL article for a good synopsis. --Spencerian 13:32, 8 January 2006 (EST)

FTL
Acording to the article, in the original show "With the exception of Galactica, the ships were not capable of lightspeed. " I would like to know where this particular tidbit came from. As I remember some ships originallly were sub-light, but they were reto-fitted to be FTL capable. The problem was that none of them were capable of HIGH FTL speeds. Remember the specs of the Galactica show that she was capable of a flank speed of 10C. Remember, they were croosing not just interstellar space, but intergalactic space. If they were only in the Greater Magelanic Cloud, it would mean having to cover a distance of 140,000 light-years to get here. At anything other than FTL, the goal would be unatainable. Crossing interstellar distances requires FTL, no ifs, no ands, no buts. -- Centuri 06:29, 8 January 2006 (EST)

:In the RDM series, FTL is FTL, it's not a matter of speed, but of distance in terms of the "length" of a wormhole that can be made from place to place. RDM's universe sticks to Einsteinian theories. TOS stories generally were a mismash of "science" that sometimes got in the way of the story. The Fleet probably moves at a good distance on each Jump, but space is really big. Like their TOS counterparts, it will be some time before they find Earth. --Spencerian 13:38, 8 January 2006 (EST)
The message purportedly comes from a Dr. Amorak, formerly of the Colonial Ministry of Defense and a former colleague of Dr. Gaius Baltar, with information regarding "a traitor in their midst". Soon thereafter, the Carrier goes missing after failing to arrive with the rest of the Fleet on Jump 238.

Three hours later, the Olympic Carrier suddenly materializes at the Jump 238 coordinates, raising the suspicions of Roslin and Commander Adama. When asked over wireless by Lieutenant Sharon Valerii how they avoided Cylon attack, a voice from the starliner claims ignorance, saying that someone must have been looking after them, and that they used the intervening three hours to fix their malfunctioning FTL drive. Baltar, fearing exposure of his own deeds in the undermining of Colonial defenses, urges Roslin to cut off communication with the ship.

When radiological alarms sound on Valerii's Raptor on CAP, indicating the presence of a nuclear device, Commander Adama and President Roslin come to a quick consensus that the ship must be destroyed. Pilots Apollo and Starbuck reluctantly carry out the order and destroy the vessel before the nuclear weapon could detonate. Neither viewers nor the characters know for certain whether the Cylons offloaded the humans aboard the starliner or left them aboard (and out of sight) to die (33).

President Roslin later writes the ship's name down on a piece of paper and leaves it in her desk aboard Colonial One as a reminder of her role in the tragedy. She had once seen President Richard Adar do something similar when he also gave an order which resulted in the loss of innocent life through military action (Water).

A copy of Number Six using the name Shelly Godfrey claimed to been a former passenger of the Olympic Carrier. She was Amorak's assistant and lover, and was supposedly instructed by him to take (falsified) video evidence incriminating Dr. Baltar off the ship for safe-keeping. It's possible that she played some role in the Cylon takeover of this vessel (Six Degrees of Separation).

Notes
During the episode "33", the survivor count appears to drop from 49,998 (after Billy Keikeya revises the numbers down at the beginning of the episode) to 47,972 (before he informs Roslin of the birth of an infant on the Rising Star). This is a drop of 2,026, much larger than the 1,345 person crew of the Olympic Carrier.

However, in a scene cut from the episode, the whiteboard figure has apparently been revised downward again in mid-episode to 49,317. This is perfectly consistent with the reported crew of the Olympic Carrier.

Cinematic Trivia
Producers Ron Moore, David Eick and director Michael Rymer noted in their DVD comentary for "33" that digital effects artists from Zoic hid small signs of movement within the Olympic Carrier during the up-close shots of the ship. In the scene where Apollo is trying to look for people inside through the windows, lights within the ship flicker on and off and several dark figures can be observed darting about the aisleways between seats in the lower part of the ship.

The Astral Queen is a FTL-capable former starliner now given over to transporting prisoners between worlds. At the time of the Cylon attack, she was originally said to be carrying 500 male prisoners (Mini-Series) to their pardon hearings on Caprica (Bastille Day). However, this was later increased to a count of 1,500 prisoners. It was captained by Wilkens.

Following sabotage aboard the battlestar Galactica, which destroys the majority of the fleet's water reserves (Water), Lee Adama is sent to the Astral Queen to try and enlist the aid of the prisoners to help obtain fresh water supplies from an ice-bound moon (Bastille Day). However, once on board, he meets with the prisoners' spokesman, Tom Zarek, who orchestrates a break-out and hijacking of the ship.

The situation is resolved jointly by a marine assault from Galactica and by Lee Adama, agreeing to the core of Zarek's demands: that free and fair elections are held within the Fleet to appoint a new president at the end of Laura Roslin's term - some seven months from the date of the revolt on the Astral Queen. In return for his surrender and the assistance of the prisoners in obtaining the much-needed water ice for the fleet, Lee Adama leaves Zarek and his men in control of the Astral Queen, much to the chagrin of both President Roslin and Commander William Adama himself.

Notes
*The ship is equipped with at least one "flare," launched upward from some point amidships and on the dorsal section. (The Farm)
*The design and function of the Astral Queen is an acknowledgement of the original series, in which an identical design of vessel was defined as the Prison Barge.
*In the DVD commentary for "Bastille Day", Ron D. Moore and David Eick say that in hindsight they feel that "Astral Queen" was a very poor choice of name for a prison ship, and they now wish they had used a different name.
*It is possible that the Astral Queen is named for a transport mentioned in the original Star Trek episode "The Conscience of the King."
