The '''Guardian basestar'''<ref>{{bsgwiki term}}</ref> was a design developed by the Cylons at the end of the first [[Cylon War]] and represents the first stop towards the [[Basestar (RDM)#Modern basestar|modern basestar]] design. The [[first Hybrid]] was developed for this basestar and integrated with it.

At the end of the Cylon War, Lieutenant [[William Adama]], then a Viper pilot, is shot down over an [[ice planet]] and encounters a facility where humans are being experimented on to create [[Hybrid]]s. Unable to free the captives, he witnesses the launch of this particular basestar, although he is unaware of its nature at the time.

According to [[Sharon Agathon]], a group of [[Cylon Centurion Model 0005|old Centurions]] escaped being scrapped when they were replaced with the newer, non-sentient models, and made off with this basestar, the first Hybrid and other materiel. They became known as "Guardians" and have become a legend among the Cylons as no one knows for sure if they still exist.

Eventually, the Guardians come upon a science team from ''Pegasus'', using a [[Raptor]] to study a supernova, and capture them to experiment on. During a search and rescue mission for the Raptor, [[Starbuck]] and [[Showboat]] encounter Guardian [[Cylon Raider (RDM)|Raiders]] and engage them. Starbuck shoots one down in the landing bay, allowing it to be studied. After learning of the Guardians from Agathon, and connecting the information with his experiences 40 years ago, Admiral Adama orders an attack on them.

Having learned its likely location from the Raider's navigational computer, ''Pegasus'' jumps into the vicinity of the Guardian basestar and uses a Raptor to land a Marine strike team, led by Starbuck and [[Kendra Shaw]], on the basestar. They are successful in rescuing the civilians, but take several casualties. After she is wounded and the trigger of the team nuclear bomb is damaged, Shaw decides to stay back and detonate the bomb manually. Before she does so, she encounters the first Hybrid whom the Guardians worhship as a god. He claims to expect her and delivers a [[The Destiny#Warning from the First Hybrid|cryptic warning]] about Kara Thrace ([[Razor]]).

== Notes ==
* Given that only the standard Cylon [[Basestar (RDM)#Cylon War-era basestar|basestar]] is displayed in the [[Galactica Museum]], the Colonials might never have encountered another one like it. Considering this was the very end of the war, the model likely never saw combat. It is unknown if more ships like it were built, or if it is unique.

The former CAG aboard the ''Galactica'', Spencer was a liked and respected officer who mixed easily with his pilots. Off-duty he enjoyed joining them in a card game, while on-duty he took his work very seriously and treated his pilots with a firm but fair hand.

During the decommissioning ceremonies for the ''Galactica'', he played second fiddle to Captain [[Lee Adama]], allowing the younger man to fly the newly-restored [[Viper (RDM)|Viper]] Mark II N7242C - the vehicle flown by one Lieutenent [[William Adama]] during the [[Cylon War]], to honour the ''Galactica's'' outgoing Commander and Lee Adama's father.

Following the decommissioning ceremony, Spencer led his squadron - the last fully-operational squadron on ''Galactica'' - to [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Caprica|Caprica]], presumably to be re-deployed. While they were en route, the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylons]] launched their surprise [[Cylon Attack|attack]] on the [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)|Twelve Colonies]].

Alerted to the attack by the ''Galactica'', Spencer located two Cylon [[Raider]] fighters and, after ordering the accompanying [[Raptor]] reconnaissance vehicle out of the firing-line, had his squadron attempt to intercept the Raiders. However, as the Vipers moved in on their targets, they all suffered simultaneous failures in their flight control, communications and weapons systems as the Cylons infiltrated their ship computer using the backdoor programming of the [[Command Navigation Program]].

Unable to maneuver or fire, the entire squadron was quickly destroyed by the two Raiders, with Spencer among the first to be killed.

Spencer and they were disappointed to had to of killed off his character. '''Barry Garner''' is the third commanding Colonial officer on [[battlestar]] ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]'' after the deaths of Admiral [[Helena Cain]] and Colonel [[Jack Fisk]]. Before his promotion, he was the ship's chief engineer ([[The Captain's Hand]]).

As a Commander, Garner does not inspire great confidence and treats his staff rather sternly, as if they are to be 100% consistent in their behavior. [[Kara Thrace|Kara "Starbuck" Thrace]] considers Garner paranoid and barely competent. Garner holds a similar contempt for Thrace, leading him to order her eventual transfer back to ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]'', despite her work with the missing Raptors [[Raptor 718|718]] and [[Raptor 314|314]].

Garner's lack of command insight jeopardizes ''Pegasus'' when he takes his battlestar (against [[Admiral Adama]]'s orders) into the binary stellar cloud to recover the missing crews instead of deploying an armed squadron of Raptors.

Realizing his own deadly mistakes when (as Admiral Adama suspected) three Cylon basestars ambush ''Pegasus'', Garner decides to hastily return to aid his old Engineering team to restore the damaged [[FTL]] drive (the ship's only means of escape or success), leaving Major [[Lee Adama]], the acting [[Executive officer|XO]], in command. Garner enters a compartment which is venting to space, sealing the hatch behind him and sealing the coolant leak damaged by the attack. Major Adama's actions severely damage one of the basestars, buying Garner time to fix the leak. Garner's repair allows ''Pegasus's'' "[[snipe]]s" to return the FTL drives to operation and the battlestar to escape a [[Battle of the Binary Star System|hopeless battle]]. However, Garner asphyxiates in the compartment.

The events surrounding Garner's death are reviewed by Lee and William Adama. Major Adama understands that Garner's failure was in treating people as he would a machine.
