Overview
:Helo investigates the claims of Sagittarons that a doctor is discriminating against them by providing substandard medical care.

Summary
Teaser
*Helo, in his quarters with his sleeping wife and daughter, is fitful and cannot sleep. He tries to get some work done but falls asleep later in the morning.
*The population of Dogsville on Galactica is increasing by 300. Helo is tasked to managing the needs of the populace camped there while other pilots continue their usual flight duties.
*Many civilians call to Helo, asking him to keep them physically separated from the Sagittarons.
*Dualla is also on the floor, trying to defuse a problem with Mrs. King and her son, Willie King, as a civilian physician, Michael Robert, tries to examine anyone he can see.
*Dr. Robert sees a frightening pattern of people coughing and tells Saul Tigh, an old friend of his who just arrived on the floor, to leave the area.
*Helo sees the pattern of sickness as well when King's son collapses to the floor.

Act 1
*Admiral Adama meets with Helo, Dr. Robert, Colonel Tigh and Dr. Cottle to discuss the sickness.
*The cause, Mellorak infection, is transmitted by touch only and is curable with a drug, bittamucin. While a dangerous disease that is fatal in its advanced stages after 48 hours, the disease is curable if caught early.
*The complication involves the Sagittarons, who believe that physicians and medications from them are an abomination to the Gods and will not likely accept any medication. They have practiced their shunning of conventional medical care for over 1,000 years.
*The stocks are low in any case, and Adama orders immediate inoculations of key crew and medication used only when someone shows definitive signs of the disease.
*Helo watches as some of Sagittarons use a curative root extract in an attempt to stave off the illness.
*On Colonial One, President Roslin explains how Gaius Baltar's trial will go with her vice president, Tom Zarek.
*Zarek warns, visibly agitated, that a trial like this would be a "hurricane" that would cause pandemonium in the Fleet. Roslin is left visibly worried as she realizes that Zarek was genuinely frightened of the possibility of trial.
*Helo continues to take complaints, many from other Colonials who want to be moved away from the Sagittarons. King arrives to not only tell Helo of her son's death, but that she made a mistake in trusting Dr. Robert. Helo believes that she waited too long, but she notes that her son was only sick for 12 hours, well within the 48 hour cure window, making Helo suspicious.

Act 2
*Dr. Robert tells of other deaths as Helo questions him about the King son's death. Robert deflects comments while giving Helo his inoculation, and notes commenting favorably to him to Col. Tigh.
*Margaret Edmondson, Galen Tyrol, Felix Gaeta, Lee Adama, Anastasia Dualla, Kara Thrace and many others are at Joe's bar taking a break. Some are playing the Pyramid arcade game. When Connor calls Edmondson by the name of "Marge," the Raptor pilot tells him that her shot accuracy is improved when she imagines the pyramid target as his face when throwing.
*Tyrol becomes drunk and begins to tell how the Sagittarons did not help fight on New Caprica. He personally believes that those colonists do not deserve any of the medication. Major Adama orders him to stop commenting once it becomes clear that Dualla, a Sagittaron herself, was becoming uncomfortable.
*Dualla agrees with some of Tyrol's drunken commentary in regards to her fellow colonists' stubborness, but notes her specific dislike of Dr. Cottle.
*Sharon Agathon is visiting the incarcerated Caprica-Six, discussing Baltar. Six's virtual Baltar appears to counter Agathon's thoughts on helping the Colonials.
*Six talks with her virtual Baltar, who tells her that the "trick" of behaving like a human is to think only of yourself.
*As Six kisses the virtual Baltar, President Roslin and Tory Foster are listening and watching Six nearby by hidden surveillance, and question who or what she is speaking to.
*A riot occurs in the camp, and Helo and the marines scramble to save Dr. Robert, who is at the center of the attack. Many Sagittarons accuse him of murder.
*Robert admits to administering the rationed drug without patient consent, particularly to one of the Sagittaron's noted fundamental members. The doctor becomes irritated at Helo's probing questions.
*Helo reports to Admiral Adama of Robert's behavior, with Cottle present. Neither man believes Helo's report is credible, and Adama dismisses him, telling him that he has more pressing matters than dealing with what he believes are unfounded accusations.
*Tigh catches up with Helo and tells him that accusing Robert is doing little to help Helo's overall credibility with the Fleet command. When Tigh insults Helo's wife, the captain punches him.
*Tigh takes the blow without arresting Helo, but warns that further accusations will further diminish his reputation in the Fleet.

Act 3
*Sharon Agathon tells her husband that their daughter is sick, having been pulled off CAP to help her child.
*Despite Helo's worries about Robert, Hera is given the drug and sedatives.
*Helo returns a bracelet from Willie King's body to Mrs. King. Before she leaves, he asks why she let her son be treated if she was previously warned. She explained that she did so because she didn't believe that anyone could have so much hatred inside them as to kill a patient. She leaves, refusing to discuss further.
*In their quarters, the Agathons argue, Helo questions whether he is getting damning treatment for being the husband of a Cylon, and his other actions.
*Helo visits sickbay, but finds it empty. He searches the medical records of patients from New Caprica and finds a shocking correlation.
*Cottle enters and tries to order Helo out of the office, threatening arrest. He shows that, unlike other colonists, the mortality rate of Sagittarons is over 90%. When asked to perform an autopsy on Willie King, Cottle tells Helo he's already done so, and Helo leaves, defeated and angry.
*Dualla, with her dislike of Cottle on record, visits Dr. Robert, asking for Bittamucin. She shows the first signs of Mellorak infection.
*On the night phase on the ship, King sneaks away from the refugee camp to Helo's quarters to warn him that Dualla had sought Dr. Robert's help after she began to show symptoms, also noting two other Sagittaron deaths. Helo realizes that, if his instincts are right, Dualla is in serious trouble. Marines appear to escort King away as Help quickly dresses and heads to the camp, against his wife's warnings and anger about having to fight for respect every day aboard Galactica.
*Out of uniform and yelling for people to move out of the way, Helo storms through the encampment, frantically searching for and finding Dualla, lying a cot, motionless and unconscious, and desperately checks her vital signs.

Act 4
*Helo couldn't find immediate life signs and fears he's too late until Dualla stirs. She is alive, but very lethargic from medication that Robert administered.
*Helo attempts to move her to help from Dr. Cottle when Dr. Robert appears and stops him from leaving, calling for security to assist him. Dualla, in her delirium, shouts not to be treated by Cottle. Marines hear only part of the conversation and order Helo to stand down.
*A security detail separates Dualla from Helo, and sidearms are pulled as Robert orders the marines to arrest Helo.
*Colonel Tigh and Dr. Cottle arrives with additional marines, but instead of taking sides with Robert, Tigh berates Robert.
*Cottle explains to Helo that he didn't actually perform the toxicology test on King's son before finding Helo in his office. The autopsy revealed high levels of a toxic bisphosphnate, but no traces of the drug used to treat the disease. Cottle notes similar results in several other patients.
*Robert explains that his actions were a form of mercy-killing to save precious resources. Cottle questions his "do no harm" oath as Robert reminds Tigh of a time where they spoke in a derogative manner about Sagittarons.
*Tigh orders Helo to arrest Robert.
*Later, Admiral Adama apologizes to Helo for his actions in trying to show Robert's actions as well as other morally questionable issues in recent days. Helo returns Adama's apology with a perfect salute, finally feeling vindicated and respected.
*Agathon returns to his family, his daughter in her arms, and gives his wife a kiss.

Bonus Scene
*A bonus scene shows Helo in Adama's office, apparently at the time of Adama's apology. In this cut scene, Helo confesses to the sabotage of an aborted Cylon offensive to destroy the Cylons through biological weaponry. Adama asks Helo if he thinks this was the right time to bring this matter to his attention.
*This scene meshes with Adama's comment about the lack of a "voice in the wilderness" when Helo has questioned Fleet decisions on the Cylon genocide issue, the Sagittarons, and his unborn daughter's own fate in utero months before.

Questions
* What is the current status of the Fleet's medical supplies? Was the stockpile of vaccines and medicines that Pegasus had before its destruction (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II) transferred over to the civilian ships before the Battle of New Caprica?

* Does Roslin suspect Caprica-Six of communicating with the Cylons due to her hallucinations of Baltar?

* How many other civilian medical doctors are there in the Fleet?

* Why did Hera need the medication for a curable disease, while her blood was used to cure breast cancer for President Roslin?

* When did the hatred and bitterness towards the Sagittarons begin in Colonial history?

* How different are the Sagittarons and Gemenese in regard to their religious beliefs? What traditions and ceremonies do the Sagittarons still practice that the rest of the Colonies have abandoned?

* Who submitted Hera to Dr. Robert's care? Athena was away at CAP and Helo wasn't informed of Hera's well-being.

* What is the condition of Starbuck's and Anders's marriage? Why is he not seen with Starbuck in Joe's bar? Is he still living away from Galactica?

* Where is Tom Zarek in this matter? Is he unaware of the plight of the Sagittarons on Galactica or under Doctor Robert's care?

Analysis
* This is the first major episode that features Saggitarons in a more in-depth manner. We learn more about Tom Zarek and Anastasia Dualla's relation to their colony of origin, originally established in "Bastille Day".

* The Sagittarons' belief system appears to be modeled on various modern day religious sects that oppose the use of medical technology and/or are pacifist in their political views. Religious sects, such as the Jehovah Witnesses and Christian Scientists in the past have taken such views and had been highly criticized and persecuted.

* Mrs. King name might be derived from Martin Luther King Jr. as Mrs. King is portrayed as an individual who wants justice for the prejudice that she and her son received. It is her initial step of approaching Helo that causes the murders of her people to eventually cease.

* Similar to Baltar's internal-Six, Caprica-Six's internal Baltar appears at a moment of self-doubt and fear. Interestingly, this version of internal-Baltar seems opposed to Caprica-Six siding with the humans, while back in "Downloaded", he told her that he loved her so deeply once she made the decision to reach out to humanity.

* The Saggitarons appear to be the last human colony that still maintains most of its original roots from the founding of the colonies. According to Dr. Cottle and Colonel Tigh, medical treatment has been rejected by the Saggitarons for over 3000 years, the subject of which they had referred to as a curse. The result being that they still practice rituals and beliefs that are at least over 1000 years old. This may be the date when the other colonies began to let go of their old religious convictions and origins.

* Adama displays one of his character traits when he apologizes to Helo for not believing him about Dr. Robert. This is reminiscent of the moment when Adama offered Roslin his forgiveness when she took a part of the Fleet in search of the Arrow of Apollo (Home, Part II). Instead of forgiveness, Adama offers Helo his apology and states, as he did with Roslin, that it doesn't matter whether Helo asked or needs it, Helo still has it.

* In the real world, Robert's poisons, known as bisphosphantes, are a family of drugs used to treat certain bone cancers and osteoporesis in some women. The use of the drug by real world definition correlates with Cottle's notation of acute cellular disruption, which could happen with such drugs.

* This is the first time since "Collaborators" that Gaeta is seen in a relaxed setting. The episode indicates that he has finally been welcomed back amongst the crew and able to join them in their Pyramid game. In addition, it appears that his actions towards Baltar did not lead to any serious repercussions.

Notes
* The title doesn't literally refer to a king, but to a female character named King, and is referred to in this episode's dialogue; Colonel Tigh asks who is lodging all the complaints against Dr. Robert, Helo replies "the woman, King".

* Bruce Davison's character Dr. Robert may be a reference to a song by The Beatles entitled "Dr. Robert". The song is about a doctor who prescribes illicit drugs. The next episode also contains a Beatles reference in its title.

*Dualla is noted as a Sagittaron. This was previously established in "33" and "Bastille Day".

*Tom Zarek was granted the Vice Presidency, despite his actions in "Collaborators".

*Racetrack's given name, established in "Final Cut", is used in dialogue for the first time. Connor calls her "Marge", which seems to irritate her.

*Racetrack banters with Helo about her desire to have sexual relations with a nugget. This indicated that the military is still recruiting and training new pilots.

Noteworthy Dialogue
* Tom Zarek offers his view on the results of Gaius Baltar's forthcoming trial:

: Zarek: Listen to me, Baltar will get his trial, and this is what you'll get: a hurricane. The media will descend upon you and watch, and scrutinze, and question your every move. You will have sectarian violence, you will have assassination attempts, you will have civil unrest on a scale we've never seen. Work, labor, everyday routine in this fleet will come to a complete halt. This trial is going to bring down this entire fleet down.
: Tory Foster: Mr. Vice President, we have a security plan in order, which includes rapid marine deployment, increased CAP operations, security details–
: Zarek: (ignoring Foster) A hurricane, Laura. If I were you, I'd declare martial law during the trial. You're going to need a lot more than a little patience to survive. I'm here if you need me.

* Six's internal Baltar gives her some advice:
: Internal Baltar: But there's a trick to being human, you have to think only about yourself.

* Michael Robert attempts to explain himself, after he is found out:
: Robert: (to Agathon) You ought to be on your knees, thanking me for saving your daughter's life, for having the meds to cure her of her illness. (to Cottle) Now you know how painful this disease is at the end. And they don't want our help. Now why waste time, and meds, and space on them when all of those resources could go to those who really deserve it? Who gets the medication when there's not enough to go around? The Sagittaron who won't even raise a finger to save his own race, or a Viper pilot?!
: Cottle: What the hell happened to "do no harm", Doctor?
: Robert: Look, I intervened because someone has to make the tough choices. But it doesn't matter, it doesn't matter because–look at 'em–they're going to destroy themselves anyway. Look at them out there. They're like worms crawling on a hot rock. Remember what you used to say, Saul? "Aside from a Cylon, is there anything that you hate more than a Sagittaron?"
: Tigh: I'll tell you what I hate, Mike. Being wrong. Captain Agathon?
: Agathon: Sir?
: Tigh: Arrest this son of a bitch. Gag him if you have to.
: Agathon: My pleasure sir.

Official Statements
Information from the podast:
* The Sagittaron-focused storyline, was originally intended to play a larger role in the upcoming Baltar trial. However, in post-production, it was decided that the trial needed to go into an entirely different direction, thus cutting out most of the Sagittaron build up in other episodes.
* Tom Zarek's fear that is noted by Roslin was originally based on Zarek's fear that like Gaeta, Baltar would attempt to implicate him in an incident with the Sagittarons on New Caprica. There is a deleted scene in which Zarek talks with Baltar and tries to figure out what Baltar plans to say about the event.
* RDM acknowledged that the explicit racism expressed by Tigh and Tyrol appeared very forced as it was never alluded to before. It was necessary at the time because of the original role that the Sagittarons were suppose to factor into Baltar's trial. However, once the decision was made to not focus on an event that the audience has not seen firsthand, the scenes now stand alone.
* The broader theme of the episode was suppose to portray Helo as a man who desired to prove his worth again to the leadership. The guilt and struggle he felt of sabotaging the biological weapon is the main factor that causes him to appear as the boy who cries "wolf" to Adama and Tigh. The deleted scene from the episode ran along those lines and explicitly displays Helo's guilt for having disobeyed his orders.
* The re-introduction of Caprica-Six' internal Baltar was an explicit order from RDM to the writing staff after initial reluctance. This accomplished at least two purposes. First, it established that Caprica-Six was never freed from these visions of her internal Baltar, and that she still has to deal with her visions. Secondly, in the grander theme of the show, the internal Baltar and Six will play major roles in the unfolding of the series.

* Though shown briefly, when the pilots (Apollo, Starbuck, and Racetrack) are walking past Helo in the corridor, it should be noted that Racetrack momentarily flirts with Helo when she holds onto his arm with Athena present. This hails back to an interview with Leah Cairns who stated that she and Tahmoh Penikett play their scenes together as though there is a sexual attraction between the two characters, while Athena remains unaware.

In addition, it appears that his actions towards Baltar did not lead to any serious reprecusions.

*Information from the podast:
** The Sagittaron-focused storyline, was originally intended to play a larger role in the upcoming Baltar trial. However, in post-production, it was decided that the trial needed to go into an entirely different direction, thus cutting out most of the Sagittaron build up in other episodes.
** Tom Zarek's fear that is noted by Roslin was originally based on Zarek's fear that like Gaeta, Baltar would attempt to implicate him in an incident with the Sagittarons on New Caprica. There is a deleted scene in which Zarek talks with Baltar and tries to figure out what Baltar plans to say about the event.
** RDM acknowledged that the explicit racism expressed by Tigh and Tyrol appeared very forced as it was never alluded to before. It was necessary at the time because of the original role that the Sagittarons were suppose to factor into Baltar's trial. However, once the decision was made to not focus on an event that the audience has not seen firsthand, the scenes now stand alone.
** The broader theme of the episode was suppose to portray Helo as a man who desired to prove his worth again to the leadership. The guilt and struggle he felt of sabotaging the biological weapon is the main factor that causes him to appear as the boy who cries "wolf" to Adama and Tigh. The deleted scene from the episode ran along those lines and explicitly displays Helo's guilt for having disobeyed his orders.
** The re-introduction of Caprica-Six' internal Baltar was an explicit order from RDM to the writing staff after initial reluctance. This accomplished at least two purposes. First, it established that Caprica-Six was never freed from these visions of her internal Baltar, and that she still has to deal with her visions. Secondly, in the grander theme of the show, the internal Baltar and Six will play major roles in the unfolding of the series.

In addition, it appears that his actions towards Baltar did not lead to any serious reprecusions.

* The version of Gaius Baltar that Six imagines, gives her some advice:
: Six's Baltar: But there's a trick to being human, you have to think only about yourself.
Overview
: Baltar is rigorously questioned about his past and what the Cylons know about Earth. Meanwhile, both Kara Thrace and Lee Adama struggle with their feelings for one another and are forced to make a decision about their respective marriages.

Summary
Teaser
*The episode begins as the Fleet moves past a small planetoid. Viewers hear a lullaby being sung as the shot moves past duty lockers as people sleep, to show Gaius Baltar, in a brig on Galactica, tearing strips of fabric.
*To pressure him into revealing any secrets or tactical knowledge of the Cylons, Baltar has been forced to stay awake. In turn, the prisoner has gone on a hunger strike, and believes that the Fleet's leadership will eventually kill him outright, rather than give him a fair trial.
*Baltar's virtual Number Six appears to question his actions, but only briefly. She soon begins to "aid" him in his task; he ties the fabric strips to form a hangman's noose.
*Elsewhere, Lieutenant Felix Gaeta cannot sleep. He dresses and heads for the brig. A marine on guard stops his advance.
*The virtual Six "pushes" Baltar's cot, and the man begins to choke on his noose. Six tells him to take slow, deep breaths.
*Baltar appears to awake in a Cylon rebirthing tank, surrounded by three Six copies. He shouts in celebration, believing that, at least, he knows his true nature as a Cylon.
*The Sixes' gentle touches suddenly become harsh scratches and lacerations. A Six tells Baltar that he is not, in fact, a Cylon, but a human about to die. All three push Baltar into the tank's gelatinous mixture. One Six enters the pool, lying above him and kisses him as he is held to drown.
*Baltar's mind was likely suffering from oxygen deprivation, as his marine guard cuts him down and successfully resuscitates him. Gaeta leaves to find Dr. Cottle.

Act 1
*Admiral Adama, Saul Tigh, Dr. Cottle, and President Roslin sit in Adama's quarters, discussing what to do to get information from Baltar. Acknowledging that his hunger strike and suicide attempt have soured his mood, Roslin suggests an alternative plan.
*When Lieutenant Gaeta is asked why he was at Baltar's cell so early in the morning, he tells the president that he couldn't sleep and wanted to speak with the former president.
*Elsewhere, Lee Adama treats his friend Galen Tyrol to a little surprise: A number of crew have created a bar, probably on the starboard hangar deck, complete with a Pyramid arcade game, an old Viper Mark II hanging above for atmosphere. "Joe's bar" is filled with many people who have managed to put aside the troubles of the day. Tyrol and Adama have a drink as they discuss their marital problems; Tyrol and his wife Cally have had an argument that has apparently left him "in the doghouse". Adama is reluctant to interact with his wife, Anastasia Dualla, as his angst over his love of Kara Thrace continues to fight with him.
*Major Adama returns to his quarters, quite drunk, to find Dualla still awake and doing some work, apparently drinking some liquor or type of wine. She tries to confirm if they are still going to have dinner later that day as Adama dozes off, leaving Dualla disappointed.
*A similar conversation is occurring at Kara Thrace's bunk, as Samuel Anders resists an attempt by Thrace to get more intimate. Thrace darkly pokes fun at herself, calling herself a "two-timing bitch" of a spouse. Anders does not return Thrace's darkness, but asks if she is in love with Lee Adama.
*When Thrace hesitates to answer, Anders tells her to explore what she feels, believing that Thrace's alleged destiny and her feelings about Anders may still be significant. The former resistance fighter leaves Thrace to herself in her bunk.
*President Roslin appears in Baltar's cell. Mirroring a similar event on New Caprica months before where Roslin is incarcerated by the Cylons and Baltar arrives to speak with her, Roslin hands him his glasses. Baltar, realizing the reference, takes his glasses and puts them on.
*After lighting a cigar for him, she sits. Baltar complains of having been force-fed by Cottle's staff, to which Roslin is non-plussed. She asks him questions about his involvement with the Cylons. She questions him using her personal knowledge of his interaction with a known Cylon model before the Cylon attack, asking if he allowed a Cylon access to the Colonial Defense Mainframe.
*Baltar equivocates at first, then stands his ground about his involvement, calling Roslin's accusations a "rehash" of the same lies as she did prior to the presidential election.
*Roslin shakes her head, and escalates her questioning. She shows Baltar a series of pictures of the dead on New Caprica who were killed by Cylons for supposed insurrection. Uncharacteristically, Roslin's voice rises to a shrill, yelling at Baltar as she flings each of the pictures. She yells for Saul Tigh to have Baltar taken from his cell and carried to the airlock.
*Baltar shouts his innocence as the marines move him through the memorial hallway as Roslin tries to haunt the former president with faces of the Colonies' dead. Baltar stops his "executioners" to show one photo of a man he knew. After telling them that he would not do anything to harm his friend, his wife and Baltar's godchildren, the marines cart the scientist away.

Act 2
*The Fleet's leadership convene once more. Roslin's plan failed; Baltar called the bluff about being thrown in an airlock, and the marines have returned him back to his cell.
*When Roslin suggests a different, less aggressive approach, Admiral Adama suggests the use of a special hallucinogenic drug used experimentally by the Colonial military. Roslin's expression is a mixture of awe and surprise, but asks if Galactica has this drug onboard.
*Lee Adama and Dualla have an argument about Kara Thrace and the future of their marriage. Dualla says that she married Adama because she loved him, choosing to have him for as long as he or Kara Thrace would let him. She resigns herself to her marriage's failure and tells Adama that she will not stand in his way if he were to choose Thrace over her.
*Kara Thrace and Lee Adama meet privately. When Thrace asks Adama if he loves her and would be with her if she were to leave Anders, Adama equivocates, remembering Thrace's fickleness after he declared his love a year before. Thrace leaves him to think about the situation.
*Major Adama returns to the bar and drinks more, toying with his wedding band. He asks Chief Tyrol if he ever thought about what his future with Boomer would have been like, or had any regrets. With a quick drink, Tyrol replies in the negative.
*Major Adama stumbles back to his quarters, losing his wedding band somewhere in Galactica's corridors.
*Baltar is strapped down in sickbay as Roslin authorizes the administering of the interrogation drug to Baltar. Adama warns not to make any loud noises and orders additional restraints on the prisoner's head.

Act 3
*Baltar finds himself floating in a nondescript dark body of water, with only a dim light shining from above.
*Adama and Roslin talk to Baltar in his hallucinogenic haze, asking him questions about the Cylon's knowledge of the whereabouts of Earth, and his mission at the Temple of Five.
*Baltar, genuinely believing that his life is in peril, tells how he believed that he was one of the final five Cylons and was seeking an answer.
*Medic Layne Ishay accidentally knocks over some equipment, creating a loud clang, which interrupts Baltar's interrogation momentarily.
*Adama warns Baltar to cooperate so that he would be able to "get out", then turns off the flashlight he was using to create the lighting effect in Baltar's illusory world.
*Baltar begins to talk about Caprica Six and her involvement, as a vision of Six appears and disappears next to him in the water.
*Baltar vision shifts to him in a Cylon rebirthing tank again, this time, however, he is surrounded by dark figures that are later revealed as the Colonial dead from the Colonies. As he tries to explain himself, the figures push him into the water, and a young girl hovers over him as he continues the dark descent.
*As Baltar sinks in his vision, in the real world, Baltar's vital signs begin to drop as well. Dr. Cottle calls off further interrogation and proceeds to revive Baltar.

Act 4
*A final attempt to gain information from Baltar uses Lieutenant Gaeta to lure Baltar into a sense of comfort by aiding the Colonial officer in his calculations to Earth, hoping that he will leak any information on Cylon tactics or technology.
*Initially, Baltar acquiesces and begins to correct Gaeta's work until he senses Gaeta's awareness of something else in the cell.
*Baltar realizes that his cell has a surveillance camera, and becomes belligerent, which begins to anger Gaeta.
*Realizing that Gaeta's anger could make things much worse, the Fleet leadership leaves their observation room to interdict Gaeta.
*Meanwhile, Baltar whispers something to Gaeta (See podcast information) who then uses the pen he brought into the room to stab Baltar in the neck.
*Adama manages to subdue Gaeta, and Cottle looks over Baltar, whose injuries are not serious.
*Meanwhile, Lee Adama and his wife meet in Joe's Bar.
*Adama, having since found his lost wedding ring, confesses that he has loved Dualla and how dedicated she has been to him, never realizing how much he needed her affection.
*As the two embrace, Adama tries to avoid looking across the bar at Kara Thrace and Anders. Thrace returns the glance before Adama breaks it off.
*Laura Roslin and Admiral Adama rest in the admiral's quarters, with Roslin reclining on a bunk and Adama sitting at the foot of the bunk. They debate, with the failure of both measures of interrogation on Baltar, what to do with him.
*When Adama suggests that there is still an opportunity to make Baltar "disappear," Roslin touches Adama's arm tenderly but briefly, reminding him of his humanity as she responds that they couldn't do that to him.
*Roslin suggests that one option is still on the table: Give Baltar a trial.

Bonus Scene
Part of a bonus scene was shown after the original airing of this episode on SciFi Channel and the full scene was made available on SciFi's website.

*Roslin talks with Caprica-Six after overseeing her transfer to a cell on Galactica, saying that all the Colonials have surmised so far is that Baltar was not involved in the initial Cylon attack.
*Roslin tries to gain information by promising Six that she won't be executed, but Six counters that Roslin made the same promise to Leoben and broke it (Flesh and Bone).
*Roslin asks for Six's name and is given it ("Caprica"), and says that she recognizes the authenticity of Caprica-Six's feelings for Baltar.
*Caprica-Six wonders if the Colonials' justice system has withered away along with their conscience and adamantly states that she will not reveal any information unless she is assured that Baltar will receive a fair trial. If he does, she will be willing to be the primary witness and share all the information that Roslin wants to know.

Questions
*Was something else at work behind Gaeta's interestingly-timed bout of insomnia?
* What is the nature of the Tyrols' marital problems?
* What is going to happen to Caprica-Six aboard Galactica?
* What will the civilian reaction be once it is known that Baltar was captured?
* Will Apollo and Starbuck keep their vows to their respective spouses from this point on, or will there be another intimate encounter between the two?
* Why did Galatica have the experimental interrogation drug that Adama spoke about?
* Given shortages throughout the Fleet, where does the Fleet get its alcohol supplies?

Analysis
* Baltar, despite extreme stress, various forms of torture, and attempted suicide, maintains a high degree of self-preservation. Even at moments when it appears he is about to confess all of his wrongs, knowing that his life might be in danger, he finds a way to circumvent the questions and redirect them to someone or something else that makes him look to be the victim - this is classic behavior of a sociopathic personality.
* Adama, during the interrogation session, seems to know more about the capabilities of the hallucinogen than it initially appears when he mentions the drug to Roslin. He appears to have done this type of interrogation before.
* The episode draws connections between Baltar and Roslin and their respective roles, especially in how both have now switched places. Roslin almost word for word quotes Baltar when it comes down to the best interrogation method: using a stick versus a carrot. The same type of analogy Baltar used with Admiral Cain in "Pegasus". Moreover there is a clear callback to Baltar visiting Roslin in her cell and handing her her glasses during the occupation of New Caprica.
* This episode displays the darker side of Adama as throughout the episode he is consistently the one to display a bitter streak towards Baltar. He cites many different options and choices that one would consider to be contradictory to his own stances of how humans were to treat each other before. For example, he directly opposed President Zarek when it became known that people were "disappearing" without given a trial (Collaborators). Yet, with Baltar, Adama suggests to Roslin that it is not too late to make him disappear.
* The hallucinogen appears to affect how an individual's brain interprets sound. Adama ordered that complete silence be kept as he and Roslin are the only ones allowed to speak to Baltar. However, once Layne Ishay is startled by Baltar's screams, she accidentally knocks over some equipment. The clanging and noise caused the hallucinated water to become turmoil and reach the brink of drowning Baltar.
* A substantial amount of time seems to have passed between "Rapture" and this episode as Kara Thrace's hands have recovered from the burns she received on the algae planet. Baltar's appearance has also more facial hair than he had when he was captured inside the Temple of Five.
*Roslin probably connects Caprica-Six's name to Baltar saying it during his interrogation, thus deepening her belief that he is guilty.
* Judging by the reaction of the patrons, the liquor being served is most likely recently manufactured moonshine of dubious quality. Whatever passes for "the good stuff" in the bar is likely whatever hasn't been appropriated by high ranking personnel and may have been made on New Caprica.
*In "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I", Lee Adama promises the pilots to build them a bar should a habitable planet be found. However, given the time that has passed, this is probably unrelated to Joe's bar.

Notes
*This is the second episode of the series to be directed by Edward James Olmos. The first was Season 1's "Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down".
*With 30 characters, this episode has the longest title of any Re-imagined Series episode to date.
*The title is a partial quote from "Where Everybody Knows Your Name," the theme song to the television program Cheers written by Gary Portnoy & Judy Hart Angelo. — "Making your way in the world today takes everything you've got./Taking a break from all your worries, sure would help a lot."
*Information from the podcast:
**The episode was originally meant to be far lighter in tone and revolve mainly around Joe's bar, showing how people build it and fight to keep it. This explains the somewhat paradoxical episode title, given the dark tone it ultimately took.
**The bar was originally called the "Why not?" in early drafts of the script.
**The extra in the first bar scene in a wheelchair was a visitor (and a huge fan) on the set who the cast and crew took a liking to and adopted into the show for the couple of days that he was there.
**There was a larger subplot for Layne Ishay in which she can't stand Baltar being tortured anymore and leaks his presence and treatment to the Fleet. A remnant of this is present in her knocking over the instrument tray.
**There were discussions about a subplot that involved Baltar being guilty of an incident before the Cylon occupation in which many, already discriminated, Saggitarons were killed. Ron Moore relates that Baltar threatened to implicate Gaeta, who had nothing to do with the incident, in that (the scene where Baltar whispers something inaudible in Gaeta's ear) and that this is what made Gaeta snap and stab Baltar.
**RDM also mentioned that Gaeta still had "issues" that related to his time working with Baltar and how the fleet at first viewed him as a collaborator because of that relation. Now that Baltar came back, Gaeta have had a difficult time accepting that, which later turned into rage during the interrogation.
**Joe's bar will be featured again in future episodes.
*The songs heard as background music in the bar are original compositions. One is titled "Lord Knows I Would", composed and performed by Raya Yarbrough - who is the voice of most vocals on the BSG soundtrack - and available on one her albums. "All That Remains" is also performed by her, but composed by Bear McCreary and is part of his Rest Stop soundtrack.
*The secret experiments with hallucinogenic drugs for purposes of interrogation parallels the CIA's MK ULTRA program from the 1960's and 1970's. In that program, LSD was investigated as a possible "truth serum".

*The Sixes gentle touches suddenly become harsh scratches and lacerations.

*Elsewhere, Lee Adama treats his friend Galen Tyrol to a little surprise: A number of crew have created a bar in a corner of the otherwise unused starboard hangar deck, complete with a Pyramid arcade game, an old Viper Mark II hanging above for atmosphere. "Joe's Bar" is filled with many people who have managed to put aside the troubles of the day. Tyrol and Adama have a drink as they discuss their marital problems; Tyrol and his wife Cally have had an argument that has apparently left him "in the doghouse." Adama is reluctant to interact with his wife, Anastasia Dualla, as his angst over his love of Kara Thrace continues to fight with him.
Thrace darkly pokes fun at herself, calling herself a "two-timing" spouse.

*Realizing that Gaeta's anger could make things much worse, the Fleet leadership leaves their observation room to interdict Gaeta, who has now taken the pen he brought into the room to stab Baltar in the neck.
*Adama manages to subdue Gaeta, and Cottle looks over Baltar, whose injuries are not serious.
*Meanwhile, Lee Adama and his wife meet in Joe's Bar.
*Adama confesses that he has loved Dualla and how dedicated she has been to him, never realizing how much he needed her affection.

Questions
* What is the nature of the Tyrols' marital problems?
* What is going to happen to Caprica Six aboard Galactica?
* What will the civilian reaction be once it is known that Baltar was captured?
* Will Apollo and Starbuck keep their vows to their respective spouses from this point on, or will there be another intimate encounter between the two?
* Why did Galatica have the experimental interrogation drug that Adama spoke about?

Analysis
* Baltar, despite extreme stress, various forms of torture, and attempted suicide, maintains a high degree of self-preservation. Even at moments when it appears he is about to confess all of his wrongs, knowing that his life might be in danger, he finds a way to circumvent the questions and redirect them to someone or something else that makes him look to be the victim.
* Part of a bonus scene was shown after the original airing of this episode on Scifi Channel and the full scene was made available on SciFi's website. In it, Roslin talks with Caprica-Six after overseeing her transfer to a cell on Galactica, saying that all the Colonials have surmised so far is that Baltar was not involved in the initial Cylon attack. Roslin tries to gain information by promising Six that she won't be executed, but Six counters that Roslin made the same promise to Leoben and broke it (Flesh and Bone). Roslin asks for Six's name and is given it ("Caprica"), and recognizes the authenticity of her feelings for Baltar. She probably connects that name to Baltar saying it during his interrogation, thus deepening her belief that he is guilty. Caprica-Six wonders if the Colonials' justice system has withered away along with their conscience and adamantly states that she will not reveal any information unless she is assured that Baltar will receive a fair trial. If he does, she will be willing to be the primary witness and share all the information that Roslin wants to know.

**There was a larger subplot for Layne Ishay in which she can't stand Baltar being tortured anymore and leaks his presence and treatment to the Fleet. A remnant of this is present in her knocking over the instrument tray.
**There were discussions about a subplot that involved Baltar being guilty of an incident in which many, already discriminanted, Saggitarons were killed. Ron Moore relates that Baltar tells Gaeta, that he will implicate him in that (the scene where Baltar whispers something indaubible in Gaeta's ear) and that this is what makes Gaeta snap and stab Baltar.
Overview
:The Fleet makes a stop at the barren Algae planet, home of a Colonial religious relic that may further lead the way to Earth—for both the Colonials and the Cylons.

Summary
* The Fleet is mending its wounds from its passage to the algae planet. The harvest proceeds well and is into its 14th day, and appears to be closing up shop.
*Starbuck flies from Galactica to the harvest camp in a Raptor, intentionally creating more noise than usual. Lee Adama is managing the harvest operations with his wife, Anastasia Dualla.
*When Major Adama leaves to greet Kara Thrace, Dualla's face barely hides her disappointment and frustration at Adama's hasty departure.
*Major Adama greets Thrace with an admonishment of her piloting, but his comments are very brief; the two pilots embrace and passionately kiss.
*Adama wants he and Thrace to stop hiding their feelings and divorce their respective spouses. Thrace reminds him that marriage in the eyes of the gods is a sacrament; she has made a vow she will not break. Adama reminds her that their repeated secret encounters would be frowned on by the gods as well. Adama becomes frustrated, Thrace holds her position, and the two are left trapped in their feelings.
*On a basestar, the little human/Cylon hybrid, Hera, is crying and is not well. Gaius Baltar is awakened by her cries and visits the child, who is attended by the Number Eight known once as Sharon Valerii.
*Galen Tyrol is part of the harvest team. He keeps been distracted by something that apparently only he can sense, and keeps looking out towards the unexplored hills beyond the harvest site. Samuel Anders, also working on the harvest, comments that the algae harvest tastes as badly as it smells. Tyrol jokes that the algae is "breakfast, lunch and dinner until we can find a hot-fudge planet."
*After sensing something strange one time too many, Tyrol leaves the harvest camp and begins a trek to a mountainous area. He discovers a door--not a naturally-carved one, but a rectangular door, apparently constructed by human hands.
*Tyrol enters the door and walks through a passageway into an immensely large domed room, carved from within the mountain. In the center of the room is a center spire that reaches high into the structure. The spire is surrounded by five pentagonal obelisks. The center spire has ancient tribal carvings at the bottom, as well as illuminated crystalline pillars atop it. Tyrol, the son of a priest and an oracle, has a fair idea of what he has discovered: The Temple of Five.
*Laura Roslin discusses what she knows with Tyrol over wireless about this special Temple as it is told in the Sacred Scrolls in Admiral William Adama's quarters. But before they can digest the information further, they are alerted to four basestars that Jump into orbit of the planet and move towards the Fleet.
*Admiral Adama orders the civilian Fleet to escape to emergency jump coordinates, but leaves Galactica behind; Adama does not want to repeat the situation on New Caprica, where he retreated with the remains of the Fleet and abandoned the colonists there. Adama chooses to stay to protect his harvest team until they can escape. He and Roslin also agree that, if the Temple of Five has a marker to Earth, they must not let the Cylons take it.
*However, very uncharacteristically, the Cylons do not attack. In fact, they request communications with Adama. The voice that Adama hears is not a welcome one: It is Gaius Baltar's.
*The Cylons request a meeting aboard Galactica to discuss the Eye of Jupiter. The Number Three copy that Baltar calls D'Anna, a copy of Cavil, Baltar, and the Number Eight copy once known as Sharon Valerii board the battlestar under heavy marine guard.
*The virtual Number Six in Baltar's mind warns him that, while he may feel like he has returned home, he cannot stay: The Colonials would "toss (him) into an airlock and have a party."
*On the way to the meeting, Sharon Agathon recognizes the Eight copy as the former "Boomer" Valerii. Colonel Saul Tigh denies her entry into the meeting. The two Eights are left outside the doorway, facing each other with mutual looks of contempt.
*The two sides meet. Baltar attempts to take the initiative in an attempt to serve as a mediator, but this infuriates Roslin that she leaves the meeting. Adama receives the Cylon's terms: Leave peacefully so that they can gather the Eye of Jupiter, and they will not attack. Cavil adds the surrender of Baltar to the terms as well, to the former president's and Three's shock.
*Boomer-Eight tells Sharon Agathon that Hera is alive, but unwell, on their basestar. Agathon refuses to believe her.
*Admiral Adama is not amused. He warns that Galactica will destroy the planet's treasures with his nuclear arsenal should the Cylons attempt to land on the planet. The two sides depart in a state of détente.
*Admiral Adama manages to get an order to his son of the situation and to destroy the site if the Cylons invade before the Cylons jam all wireless communications.
*Major Adama instructs Samuel Anders to organize fireteams to defend against a probable Cylon incursion. Anders, also realizing what Adama has been doing with Thrace, is very angry and initially refuses to oblige until Thrace asks him to comply.
*Cally and Galen Tyrol speak in the Temple. He tells her of how he was annoyed at his parents and their worship. Cally Tyrol sees reverence on his face, despite his general mood of disbelief.
*Lieutenant Felix Gaeta has conducted some scans of the star system of the algae planet. He warns that the sun of this system is in danger of imminent supernova. Gaeta, who normally is as secular as his commander, finds it very strange how the Cylons and Colonials arrive at this one place at this time just before the planet's imminent destruction. Adama notes that the "higher powers" at work appear to have a strange sense of humor.
*The basestar command, with Caprica-Six and Baltar in attendance, discuss their plan to get the Eye. Cavil feels that annilihation of Galactica is the best option with the standoff (given that they are machines that can wait out humanity for years and find Earth eventually).
*D'Anna, without consulting the other Cylons, has solely initiated the jamming of Colonial communications, and has already sent a Heavy Raider with a squad of Centurions to the planet as the basestar fleet Jumped, successfully avoiding Colonial detection. This action infuriates the others, particularly Caprica-Six.
*D'Anna notes that, as soon as the Centurions recover the Eye, the other Cylons can destroy Galactica.
*The Colonials, with Anders at the lead, plan out their defense on the planet. One team will manage ammo distribution, another team will create tylium mines.
*As the harvest team-turned-point defense teams leave the tent, Major Adama compliments Anders for his honest, to-the-point direction to the group, indicating that Anders would make a good officer. Anders scoffs at Adama's compliment, inferring that he knows what Adama and Thrace have been doing. When Adama tries to object, Anders tells Adama not to insult his intelligence, as he is aware that Adama is not that only one that Thrace has enjoyed sexual company with.
*On the basestar, in the Hybrid's room, D'Anna-Three is savoring the opportunity to see the faces of the final five Cylon agents--"maybe the face of God himself." The Hybrid notes, in her quizzical manner, that the "sins" will be revealed only to the "chosen one," lifting her head and staring directly at Baltar as she repeats, "the chosen one." D'Anna's eyes are closed and is not aware that the Hybrid is addressing Baltar.
*Caprica-Six enters and questions D'Anna's intentions. D'Anna dismisses their three-way relationship as she tells of her plan to leave with Baltar to reveal the secrets of the Temple. Six is visibly hurt at being left behind.
*The planet team begin their final preparations, led by Dualla. With wireless jammed, she notes how hardwired observation points are to be created to warn of any Cylon advance, with Starbuck's Raptor taking point with directions to fly to the nearest observation point to relay any sightings. Thrace's annoyance at Dualla's precise direction leads to some catty replies by Thrace, with Dualla ignores.
*As the observation teams take their positions, Starbuck begins her recon flight. As she turns along a ravine, she spots the Centurion emplacement and is immediately fired upon by the Cylon's missile battery. Starbuck tries to evade and successfully manages to relay a visual message that she found Centurions before her Raptor is struck by a missile. With the controls on fire and visibility lost, Starbuck screams as she keeps her hands on the flight controls and fights for control of the Raptor.
*As President Roslin explores what little is known about the Temple from a book of the Sacred Scrolls, Admiral Adama interrupts her. He tells her of Boomer's return and asks if Hera's faked death was true. Roslin admits to the story. When she tries to explain the reasons why, Adama abruptly leaves in anger.
*Adama tells the Agathons of Hera's discovery, and neither are pleased. When Helo argues how painful it was and how Adama should know the pain of the moment, Adama reminds him that, unlike his son, their child is still alive, and that they should be grateful for that. Sharon Agathon wants to see her child.
*Adama reports to Anders that Starbuck's Raptor has gone down, but also tells him that a rescue mission is out of the question; they haven't enough manpower to rescue Thrace and defend their position.
*Six Heavy Raiders leave a basestar towards the planet.
*Galactica sees the Heavy Raiders on DRADIS immediately. Tigh feels that this is a test to see if the Colonials are bluffing. Roslin believes that they were bluffing until Adama orders Hoshi to arm of a series of missile tubes, each containing a nuclear warhead.
*As Anders argues for Thrace's rescue, Adama explodes in defense of the mission, arguing the point that he has known and cared for Thrace for much longer than Anders, who tells Adama he is going after his wife. Adama's troops hold Anders at gunpoint.
*The basestar command detects the radiation signature of the missiles and Galactica's target preparation to detonate the Temple.
*Adama authorizes the release of the warheads as this mid-season cliffhanger ends.

Questions
*Will Adama go through with his plan to nuke the planet?
*Did Starbuck survive the crash of her Raptor?
*What is the Eye of Jupiter and how does it point the way to Earth?
*How much truth is there to Ander's claim of Kara's chronic infidelity ("You think you're the first?")?
*How will Athena and Helo knowing their child is still alive affect their relationship with Adama?
*How will Adama finding out Hera is still alive affect his relationship with Roslin?
*Is there a connection between the Temple of the Five and the five missing Cylon models?
*Who or what is "The One Whose Name Cannot Be [Told(?)]" whom the Five supposedly follow? Is this a reference to the Jealous God, who may or may not be the "one true God" of the Cylons?
*What are the "sins" of the Five that the Hybrid speaks of?
*What consequences will Number Three's actions have within the Cylon society?
*What is the Fleet doing without the presence of Galactica?
*Will there be further confrontations between the two "Sharon Valerii"-type Eight models, as seen in the passageway tirade between Boomer and Athena?
*Were the Cylons really willing to hand Baltar over to the Fleet?
*When did Boomer go over to the Cylons' way of thinking? In this episode she clearly doesn't seem to think of herself as human anymore like she did in "Downloaded".

Analysis
*At least eighteen people perished as a result of navigating through the radiation field of the star cluster.
*This episode ends the debate whether Admiral Adama knew about President Roslin's secret plan to hide Hera ("Downloaded", "Exodus, Part I") -- he did not know.
*Caprica-Six and D'Anna's dialogue indicates that they have been intimate with each other as well as with Baltar.
*Coincidence (and destiny / predestination) seems to be a major theme with this episode: the humans & Cylons show up at the planet at the same time; the temple is discovered by Tyrol, son of a priest who revered this place; the planet is orbiting a star that will go nova within days.
*This is the first time the Cylons use "human" names on the basestar when not speaking to Baltar. D'Anna is named by Caprica-Six and another Number Three. Cavil's name is used by D'Anna.
*At an unknown point in time, Galactica acquired at least three more nuclear warheads bringing the known total to six; having a previous five and then using one to destroy a basestar (Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II) and another being detonated by Gina on Cloud 9 (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II). Pegasus may be the source, as these warheads may have been resupplied from Pegasuss arsenal, which likely occurred during the events of "Pegasus".

Notes
*Writer Jane Espenson revealed that this episode was originally titled "Eye of Zeus."
*This episode, whose teaser clocks in at just over 11 minutes, has the longest teaser of any episode thus far, narrowly beating out that of "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I".
*Outdoor sequences of the algae planet were filmed near Kamloops, British Columbia .

Noteworthy Dialogue
*Cylon baseship requests to speak with Admiral Adama
::Adama: Put it through speaker. This is Admiral Adama.
::Baltar: Admiral. I can't tell you what a genuine pleasure it is to hear your voice. This is Gaius Baltar.

*Baltar and Internal-Six discuss boarding the Galactica:
::Six: Feels like old times, doesn't it?
::Baltar: Can't believe how much I actually missed this place.
::Six: You know you can't return. They'd toss you out the nearest airlock and then throw a party.

*Lee and Kara, discussing contingency plans:
::Kara: Can I make a suggestion you won't like?
::Lee: Do you make any other kind?

*The Hybrid, giving more obscure prophecy:
::Hybrid: The five lights of the apocalypse rising, struggling towards the light... sins revealed only to those who enter the temple... only to the chosen one... the chosen one... the chosen one...
::Three: The Five await me. Gaius, I'm so close to knowing the truth!

*During a meeting between Roslin and Adama with Baltar and the Cylons
::Roslin: The less this man says, the better this will go.
::Baltar: Wait a minute. If it wasn't for me the Cylons would've blown you out of the sky two seconds after we'd arrived.
::Roslin: (Roslin to Adama) I think you can handle this without me. . . if you can stomach it.

Official Statements
Jane Espenson discusses the original name for "The Eye of Jupiter" and references to it in "The Passage:"

: "When I wrote this episode, the upcoming episode was already well along, and it was called "Eye of Zeus." So all the dialogue in my episode reflected that. It got changed to Jupiter later, and I don't know why. It's always hard to get names to legally clear. All you need is one guy named Zeus who lives in North Hollywood and Standards and Practices is all over you to change the name. (deadpan) That's probably what happened."

*Roslin, During a meeting with Baltar and the Cylons

*Roslin referring to Baltar

*Roslin referring to Baltar
::Roslin: The less this man says, the better this will go.
::Baltar: Wait a minute. If it wasn't for me the Cylons would've blown you out of the sky two seconds after we'd arrived.
*Roslin to Adama
::Roslin: I think you can handle this without me. . . if you can stomach it.
