'''Guerilla Booze-Catcher''' refers to the beard worn by [[Saul Tigh]] during his leadership of the [[New Caprica Resistance|Resistance]] on [[New Caprica]].

"Booze-catcher" is a colloquial term for a [[wikipedia:beard|beard]], particularly apt when applied to Tigh, who has spent an inordinate amount of time at the bottom of various bottles. Another common variant is "soup-catcher".

Throughout history, men leading insurrections have often worn beards. Though sometimes the wearing of a beard is religiously prescribed by particular factions, it is also a way of distinguishing oneself from the (often clean-shaven) soldiers of the opposing military. They're also sexy, and look good in monochrome reproductions of leaders' portraits.

'''Sexy Treason Stubble''' is the sparse facial hair worn regularly by [[Gaius Baltar]] after his capitulation to the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylons]] on [[New Caprica]].

In the real world, stubble has come in and out of style depending on the times. While quite popular in 16th century Germany, those who wore stubble in the early-to-mid twentieth century were often considered unattractive, unrefined, and even unclean.

The popularity of stubble resurged in the 1980s, popularized by the TV series ''[[wikipedia:Miami Vice|Miami Vice]]''.

The '''Beard of Organized Labor''' is the facial hair worn by [[Galen Tyrol]] during his time on [[New Caprica]] as a [[Colonial Worker's Alliance|union leader]] and [[New Caprica Resistance|insurgent]].

Throughout history, men with [[w:Beard|beards]] have been viewed as wise, sexually potent, of high status, but have also been attributed a lack of cleanliness and refinement, or an eccentric disposition. Tyrol hits most all of these points during his time on the ground of New Caprica.

In some societies, such as the [[w:Amish|Amish]], the men are clean-shaven until such time as they are married, at which point they grow a beard and are never without one from then on.

For the ancient [[w:Ancient Rome|Romans]], a bearded man represented a man of virtue and simplicity. During grief and mourning, a Roman would let his hair and beard grow.

The militaries of many countries prohibit beards and sometimes even mustaches, usually for hygienic reasons. The Colonial military's stance on this is unknown, as Admiral Adama is wearing a [[Adamastache|mustache]]. It seems that Tyrol shaves his beard shortly before the [[Battle of New Caprica]]. Upon shaving the beard, Tyrol's former Underbite of Humility returns, as he resumes his job on ''[[Galactica]]''.

After [[Cally Tyrol|Cally]]'s death, Tyrol goes in a different direction with his personal grooming and adopts the [[Slaphead of Mourning]].

* Tyrol inexplicably loses his beard before "[[Exodus, Part I]]". This was necessary because Aaron Douglas's scenes were shot weeks after the main part of the episode, when he had already shaved and it was felt that a fake beard would not be convincing.

The Adamastache first appears to us in "[[Scattered]]", where it was revealed that Adama wore it during his civilian career. It appears again after the one-year jump in "[[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]" but meets an untimely demise at the beginning of [[Season 3|Season Three]] in the episode "[[Exodus, Part II]]". While the shaving of the Adamastache was possibly symbolic of a new beginning for the [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)|Colonies]], we also learn through flashbacks in the episode "[[Unfinished Business]]" that it was also party to a "laid-back" Adama and possibly played a role in the alleged nookie between the Admiral and [[Laura Roslin]] on [[New Caprica]].

A photograph of [[Kara Thrace|Starbuck]] with an Adamastache can be seen in "[[The Son Also Rises]]". Given the Adamastache's apparent ability to be mysteriously resurrected after being killed by shaving, and the obvious presence of more than one copy of it, the moustache may very well be the final Cylon model.

A [[Wikipedia:Moustache|moustache]] has historically indicated the man wearing it was a soldier. As ''Galactica'' and ''Pegasus'' had jumped away from the civilians, Adama's role during the time immediately before he shaved it was purely military. Though clearly he didn't originally grow it to symbolize that he was solely a military man without the civilian population, shaving it could still serve as a sign that, with civil authority restored, he is again bound by more than military objectives. Also, it helped get the nookie when he didn't see Roslin so often, but, now that they interact professionally and frequently once more, it is no longer needed.
