== Overview ==

:''Commander [[Lee Adama]] of the [[Mercury class battlestar|Battlestar]] ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]'' has serious doubts about the success of the [[New Caprica]] rescue mission by ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]''. On New Caprica, [[Saul Tigh]] decides the consequences for his [[Ellen Tigh|wife's]] betrayal of [[The Resistance|the Resistance]]. Aboard ''Galactica'', Admiral [[William Adama]] executes a dramatic [[Battle of New Caprica|rescue plan]].''

== Summary ==

===Teaser===
*On ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]'', [[Lee Adama]] and [[Anastasia Dualla|Dualla]] talk of ''[[Galactica]]''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s mission. Adama worries that Admiral Adama's mission will fail, and about his impending responsibilities as leader of [[The Fleet (RDM)|The Fleet]]. Dee notes that Lee has given up hope on his father, but expresses her faith in her husband.
*On New Caprica, [[Samuel Anders]] confronts [[Saul Tigh]] about [[Ellen Tigh|his wife Ellen's]] betrayal and tells him that either Tigh "takes care" of Ellen, or someone less sympathetic will do so.

===Act 1===
[[Image:Saulellen.jpg|Saul handing Ellen her poisoned drink.|thumb]]
*Ellen Tigh explains her recent actions, that she would do absolutely anything to save Saul, including betraying the Resistance. Tigh consoles her and provides her a drink when she asks. She falls unconscious, her drink having been poisoned by her husband. He says that he loves her, rests his head on her corpse, and weeps.
*On ''[[Colonial One]]'', [[Gaius Baltar]] tells the Cylons that they have failed in their experiment and suggests the Cylons simply leave. A [[Number Three|Three]] voices the concern that one day the descendants of mankind might exact vengeance upon the Cylons, should they be left to their own devices.
*[[Felix Gaeta|Gaeta]] suddenly looks up, noticing dozens of explosions outside the window, signalling the beginning of the [[Battle of New Caprica]].
*Anders and the resistance team has set a series of explosions, mimicking a Fleet attack and causing confusion among the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylons]].
*[[Tory Foster]] commands a team of section leaders in the evacuation and orders [[Maya]] to head for her ship with [[Hera Agathon|Isis]].
*Anders and a large group of resistance fighters retrieve weapons from beneath the [[Pyramid (RDM)|Pyramid]] court to rescue the detainees in the [[New Caprica Detention Center|detention center]].
*In space above New Caprica, ''Galactica'' deploys a squadron of Raptors and Vipers. The Raptors launch [[swallow]]s to mimic the EM signature of two Colonial battlestars. The Cylons pick them up and fall for the ruse, moving two basestars with their Raiders away from the planet.
*The Cylon command on ''Colonial One'' initially are fooled by the swallows and their mimicked battlestar signatures.

===Act 2===
*The Raptors succeed in drawing off the entire Raider defenses of the two baseships, and leave the vicinity of New Caprica with the Raiders in pursuit.
*When [[Leoben Conoy]] leaves the residence inside the Detention Center to aid with the fighting, he keeps [[Kara Thrace]] inside. She assaults him and tries to escape, but he knocks her unconscious.
*[[Tom Zarek]] tasks [[James Lyman|Jammer]] to protect [[Laura Roslin]] as she makes her way to ''Colonial One''.
*At the entrance to the shipyard, where the Cylons keep the grounded Colonial vessels, a team under Tigh and [[Galen Tyrol]] are pinned down by [[Cylon Centurion]]s.
*The Cylons realize the drones are decoys as ''Galactica'' jumps into the planet's upper atmosphere, avoiding initial detection from the baseships. As the ship plunges rapidly towards the planet, ''Galactica'' launches its Vipers.
*Before it can collide with the ground, the ship jumps back into space. The Vipers begin to attack targets on the ground and clear the way of Centurions for civilians to escape.
*As humans are freed from the Detention Center, Anders finds his unconscious wife and carries her away.
*''Galactica'' is shaken up by her reentry to orbit. Their plan to remove the Raider fighter defenses to allow the civilians to escape is working, and, according to plan, the two basestars near the planet are coming after them. But when two more baseships appear out of the nebula, Admiral Adama realizes they cannot hold off all four.

===Act 3===
[[Image:BONC.jpg|thumb|''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]'' is outnumbered.]]
*The battle is turning against ''Galactica''. Her FTL drives are down, most of her weapons are offline and there is heavy structural damage from the atmospheric entry. The basestars are closing in and the battlestar is bombarded from all sides with no hope of survival. "It's been an honor," Adama says.
*At that moment ''Pegasus'' joins the battle, Lee Adama having disobeyed his father's orders. He opens fire with the forward batteries and incapacitates one basestar in the opening salvo. Admiral Adama orders priority repairs on the FTL drives.
*When Thrace awakens, she goes back to retrieve [[Kacey Brynn]] against Anders' advice, who soon follows her.
*The Cylons realize that they have lost and decide to evacuate the planet. [[Number Three]] volunteers to stay behind and set off the nuclear weapon that was left in the city for such a contingency. She offers Baltar a place with the Cylons and leaves.
*Several Colonial ships initiate intra-atmosphere [[FTL|jumps]] from New Caprica as soon as they become airborne. Raiders and Vipers have dogfights amongst them.
*''Pegasus'' succeeds in drawing fire off of her sister ship, and is heavily bombarded by missiles, having left all of her Vipers and most of her crew back with the rest of the civilian Fleet. Admiral Adama realizes that his son has planned a one-way mission for ''Pegasus'', and orders recall of ''Galactica'''s fighters. With her fighter complement back on board, Adama orders a jump back to the rendezvous point as ''Pegasus'' fights on.
*On ''Colonial One'', [[Felix Gaeta]] holds Baltar at gunpoint, and accuses of having betrayed humanity. Gaeta admits his guilt in idealistically believing in Baltar, but has realized, in the end, that Baltar was only thinking about himself. Baltar admits his own guilt and begs Gaeta to shoot him. Gaeta relents, however, giving Baltar a final chance to redeem himself: stop Three from setting off the nuclear bomb.
[[Image:Pegaus Ram (3).jpg|thumb|right|''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]'' rams into a [[Basestar (RDM)|Basestar]].]]
*With ''Pegasus'' dying, Lee Adama orders everyone to abandon ship. He sets the ship on a collision course with a basestar as the last of the skeleton crew leaves in Raptors. ''Pegasus'' collides with a basestar, destroying it; the remains of its starboard [[flight pod]] collide with and destroy yet another basestar.
*Kara Thrace returns to the apartment to find Kacey, and Conoy enters with the child.

===Act 4===
*To try to regain possession of Kacey, Kara Thrace appears to give in to Leoben's demands to say "I love you." She does, and kisses him. As they embrace, Thrace uses the diversion to stab the Cylon to death. She picks up Kacey and leaves with Anders.
*Three searches [[Dodona Selloi]]'s tent, but the [[oracle]] has left. Outside, [[Caprica-Six]] and Baltar find Hera next to [[Maya]]'s lifeless body, still alive.
*Three arrives, asks to hold the child, and leaves with her. [[Caprica-Six]] says Three no longer intends to detonate the nuke, then leaves the planet with Baltar.
*Laura Roslin and a group of resistance fighters enter and retake the now abandoned ''Colonial One'' at Roslin's insistence and are the last ship to leave the planet.
*On ''Galactica'', many people are reunited as Tyrol immediately takes charge of ushering the incoming refugees. When Thrace shows Kacey to Tyrol, [[Julia Brynn|another woman]] walks by and recognizes the girl as her daughter, whom the Cylons had stolen. The mother thanks Thrace for rescuing Kacey. Thrace is visibly and emotionally paralyzed by the revelation that Kacey is not her actual daughter.
*Admiral Adama gives a warm welcome to his son, who was happy not to have followed his father's orders.
*The admiral welcomes Tigh back aboard, and congratulates him on bringing everyone back from New Caprica. With a tremble to his voice, Tigh quietly replies, "[[Ellen Tigh|Not all of them]]."
*The colonists in ''Galactica'''s [[hangar deck]] begin chanting "A-dam-a, A-dam-a..." and carry the admiral on their shoulders in celebration. Adama turns to see Tigh wandering off, numbed with grief.
*Tory Foster tells Roslin that neither Maya nor Hera can be found, and it seems likely neither made it off the planet. Foster apologizes, but Roslin muses that this was part of [[Religion in the Twelve Colonies#The Lords of Kobol|something bigger than them]].
*Admiral Adama shaves off his mustache and returns to a fully staffed [[CIC]], aboard the now very loud, bustling corridors of ''Galactica''.

== Notes ==
* "Exodus, Part II" was awarded the [[Awards and Honors|IGN.com Editor's choice award]], following a review in which it recieved a rating of 9/10. This marks the second of such awards presented for the third season, the first of which was awarded for the season premiere [[Occupation]].
* There is also a TOS comic named ''[[Exodus!]]''
*This episode marks the destruction of ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]''.
* The two parts of "Exodus" were originally planned as one episode. However, it was quickly realized that the story was far too large for one episode and it was split in two. This happened before with "[[Scattered]]", "[[Valley of Darkness]]" and the "[[Resurrection Ship, Part I|Resurrection Ship]]" two-parter. It also helped save money because the construction of New Caprica, the extensive location shooting, the number of actors, as well as the special effects for "Exodus, Part II" were very expensive and the production was over budget.
* The Viper Mark VIIs deployed by ''Galactica'' in this episode have a yellow engine-glow instead of their usual blue. This is also the case in "[[Maelstrom]]" suggesting that it is a normal effect in atmospheric flight.
* The moment where Lee Adama pauses to look back at the ''Pegasus'' CIC and says "thank you" is reminiscent of a similar moment in the ''[[MemoryAlpha:Ds9|Deep Space Nine]]'' episode "[[MemoryAlpha:The Changing Face of Evil|The Changing Face of Evil]]", in which, after the doomed ''Defiant'' is ordered to be evacuated, Captain Sisko takes a long look back at his ruined bridge. As with ''Pegasus'', in the next shot, the ship is destroyed. Bradley Thompson and David Weddle, who wrote "Exodus, Part II", were staff writers on DS9.
*Kate Vernon on the SciFi Forums<ref>http://forums.scifi.com/index.php?showtopic=2250922&st=64</ref> stated that Ellen Tigh knew about the poison in her drink.
*The [[Battle of New Caprica]] scenes were constructed using [[w:Lightwave|Lightwave]], with each [[Raider (RDM)|Cylon Raider]] being [[w:keyframe|keyframe]] animated.<ref>{{cite_web|url=http://www.studiodaily.com/filmandvideo/currentissue/7304.html|title=Heavy-Duty VFX Management for Battlestar Galactica: Tracking 100s of Layers to Render Huge Space Scenes on Deadline|date=1 November 2006|accessdate=10 February 2007|last=Frazer|first=Bryant|format=|language=}}</ref>
*When ''Galactica'' jumps several thousand feet from the surface of [[New Caprica]] a vacuum is created by the sudden loss of mass that consumes the re-entry fires engulfing its hull and the clouds surrounding it. A sonic boom and a shock wave are also produced when it jumps.
*In the 2007 Emmy awards, this episode won one award for ''Outstanding Special Visual Effects For A Series'', but lost in the directing and sound editing categories.
**During the ''Galactica'' jumps into the atmosphere scene, Ron Moore in his podcast states that the episode "better win the fucking Emmy," months before the awards were handed out.
* It's revealed that Kara's apartment is actually in the [[New Caprica Detention Center]].
* This episode marks the supposed death of Ellen Tigh. However its later revealed that she's a Cylon and simply downloaded into a new body on a Resurrection Ship and remained a prisoner of John Cavil for eighteen months until Boomer helps her escape.
* This episode and "[[Precipice]]" are the only ones in which all twelve humanoid Cylons appear.
* As Galactica descends through the atmosphere of New Caprica, the brand of the pencils on the tactical table, "Dixon China Marker," is clearly visible (when paused on the DVD or Blu-ray).

== Analysis ==

*Baltar may not be aware that most of the civilians have already escaped the planet when he says, in the Gaeta-Baltar scene, "The Cylons have a nuke in this complex. Nobody, and I mean nobody, is getting off this planet alive unless I stop D'Anna."
*The Cylons are not keeping closer tabs on the whereabouts of the launch keys -- no alarms or other warning -- and don't notice that they are gone until the attack starts. Since only a Cylon could enter the facility, and as the only other Cylon (one of the Threes) is incapacitated before the attack (possibly unable to download and warn the others), this appears to be a logical omission.
*While it seems that the Cylons leave the planet implausibly under-guarded, Ron Moore has mentioned in his podcasts that the Cylons do have major operations elsewhere (possibly hinting at the search for Earth story arcs later in the series).
*With the former crew of ''Pegasus'' on ''Galactica'' now, the ship has something close to its standard crew size. (''Galactica's'' crew was deduced to be 2,693 in the episode "[[Water]]", and ''Pegasus's'' was introduced with a crew count of 1,752 in "[[Pegasus (episode)|Pegasus]]" (see [[Crew tally]]). William Adama notes that over half of the crew has settled on [[New Caprica]] in "[[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I]]", and Lee confirms that both ships are at half-strength in "[[Occupation]]".) Military operations should be much smoother now, and repairs to the ship in general are more feasible.
*While the combination of the ''Pegasus'' and ''Galactica'' air wings give the latter battlestar a full-strength fighter wing, the Fleet has suffered the loss of its most advanced and best-armed warship. With it also went the capability to build replacement Vipers. Defensively, the Fleet is pretty much back to the position it was in when it left the Colonies.
*''Pegasus'' parallels its role with the [[Pegasus (TOS)|original ''Pegasus'']] as it fights to the end to defeat two basestars, allowing ''Galactica'' and the Fleet to escape from the Cylons. However, while the Original Series left the fate of its ''Pegasus'' and her crew to speculation, the Re-imagined continuity's ''Pegasus'' is totally destroyed and its crew evacuated.
* Despite the DRADIS distorting nebula surrounding the planet of New Caprica, several scenes and lines of dialogue in this episode clearly show DRADIS to be at least partially functional. This could indicate that there are gaps in the nebula allowing DRADIS to function, or that the Colonials developed ways to operate limited DRADIS despite the distortion.
* A key component of Adama's plan is to jump Galactica into the upper atmosphere of New Caprica. In "[[Home, Part II]]", Gaeta tells Adama that jumping the ship into the upper atmosphere of a planet isn't possible. Not only was Gaeta wrong in his assessment, but it is worth noting he is not on board this time when Adama conceives of the maneuver. Of course, it is possible Gaeta simply considers the maneuver so dangerous that it should be considered infeasible. His concern in this regard seems valid, as pieces can be seen tearing off of ''Galactica'' as it falls, and the event is later shown to have caused, or at least contributed to, terminal structural damage to the ship.
* During it's fall through New Caprica's atmosphere, ''Galactica'' is shown launching it's Vipers with it's flight pods still retracted, indicating they need only be extended to ''recover'' aircraft.

== Questions ==
* How many ships are in the Fleet as of the [[Battle of New Caprica]]? Also, in light of the exodus, what of consumables and other resources needed to sustain the Fleet? Were these loaded into ships already as part of the escape plan?
*In what condition are ''Galactica's'' [[Battery|gun batteries]] following the Battle of New Caprica? Do any of them remain operable, or is ''Galactica'' largely stripped of its main armaments?
*Did Commander Adama order all supplies on ''Pegasus'' not essential to the suicide run to be dumped overboard?
*''Lee discussing Adama's orders with Dualla:''
:'''Dualla''': Hoshi's working on updating our map coordinates for the search for Earth. Civilian captains want to meet with you. They have questions, problems... [He is silent.] Talk to me, Lee.
:'''Lee''': I'm having trouble... accepting this.
:'''Dualla''': I know. But we have to push forward. Keep the Fleet together. Find Earth.
:'''Lee''': Right. That's our duty.
:'''Dualla''': There's still a chance they'll come back. Your father has pulled off more than a few miracles in his day.
:'''Lee''': I know that. And I haven't given up hope.
:'''Dualla''': Yes, you have. I saw the look on your face when you came back from the Galactica. Like you were never gonna see him again.
:'''Lee''': Am I that easy to read?
:'''Dualla''': Just to me.
:'''Lee''': He's taking on too much for one half-strength Battlestar to handle. And that's not opinion. That's military fact. He's not coming back from this. None of them are.
:'''Dualla''': All we can do is make plans for the future. We have to survive. We have to find Earth. If we don't, they'll be no one to remember a man named William Adama. Or a Battlestar named Galactica. That is our charge to keep.
:'''Lee''': To keep humanity going. No matter what the cost. No matter -- No matter who we leave behind.
:'''Dualla''': You can do this. You can get us there. You are Commander of this Fleet, and you will guide us to safety. And you will do it no matter the cost. Because you're an Adama.
:'''Lee''': Did I ever tell you how proud I am to serve with you?
:'''Dualla''': Not in so many words, no.
:'''Lee''': Well, I am proud to serve with you, Lieutenant. And to call you my wife. [They kiss.] Now let's talk about... map coordinates, meeting with ships' captains.

*''Discussing the failure of the occupation:''
:'''Number Three''': What would you have us do, Gaius?
:'''Gaius Baltar''': Leave. Pack up your centurions, and go. Please. Go.
:'''Number Three''': And then what? What would you do if we really just left you here? You'd live out your lives in peace and never trouble yourselves with thoughts of us again? Or would you raise your children with stories of the Cylon, the mechanical slaves who once did your bidding, only to turn against you? Killers who committed genocide against your race, the occupiers of this city until we just ran away? Would you tell them to tell the story to their children, and to their childrens' children, and nurse a dream of vengeance down through the years so that one day they could just go out into the stars and hunt the Cylon once more?
:'''Gaius Baltar''': Blood for blood ...has to stop one day.

*''Roslin wishes Zarek good luck:''
:'''Zarek''': You're coming, aren't you?
:'''Roslin''' (gestures to ''Colonial One''): My ship's up there.
:'''Zarek''': You sure have a sense of the dramatic.

*''Adama comes to accept ''Galactica'''s end:''
:'''Admiral Adama:''' Then that's it. It's been an honor.

*''After hearing ''Pegasus'' has joined ''Galactica''':
:'''Admiral William Adama''': Damn You, Lee ...Thank You, Lee.

*''Pegasus is evacuated before its destruction:''
:'''Dualla:''' Alright, people, let's move. Out! Let's go. (To Lee): You too, Commander.
:'''Commander Lee Adama:''' Yes, sir. (Begins to leave, then stops and looks around at ''Pegasus''): Thank you.

*''As the two Adamas reunite after the battle:''
:'''Admiral Adama''': I guess you didn't understand my orders.
:'''Commander Adama''': I never could read your handwriting.

*''Adama welcomes Col. Tigh back to ''Galactica:''
:'''Adama:''' You did it. You brought 'em home, Saul.
:'''Tigh:''' Not all of them.
== Overview ==

: ''Captain [[Lee Adama]], battling haunting demons of his own from a spurned love lost on Caprica, investigates the murder of new ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]'' commander [[Jack Fisk]], and uncovers a black market that strains the resources of the Fleet.''

== Summary ==

*The recovered President [[Laura Roslin]], discusses her plan to eliminate black market problems within the [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]] in Adama's quarters with Admiral [[William Adama|Adama]], ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]'' Commander [[Jack Fisk|Fisk]], and Dr. [[Gaius Baltar|Baltar]], since they hold back on the majority of some needed supplies.
*Fisk appears adamant to help stop them during the meeting, but is dissmisive of any success it might have after the meeting is over.
*When he arrives back in his quarters on ''Pegasus'' ([[Helena Cain|Admiral Cain's]] old quarters) Fisk sees a familiar face and starts conversing with him, but is suddenly chocked from behind. A well-dressed "businessman" comes out of the shadows and merely stands there and lights a cigarette as Fisk dies.
*[[Lee Adama]], severely depressed since his ejection from the [[Blackbird]], has apparently been nurturing a relationship on ''[[Cloud 9]]'' with a woman named [[Shevon]], who has a young daughter named [[Paya]].
*He has brought a toy for Paya, but it appears all mangled, which spooks Paya.
*In a "morning after" talk, Lee and Shevon talk in tones that hint towards his wanting of a serious relationship. Shevon appears to dodge these, and requests 100 extra [[cubit|cubits]] as Lee is leaving because he "stayed the night" indicating that she is a prostitute.
*In flashback scenes, we see a past love of Lee's on Caprica. The scenes revolve around a rendezvous between Lee and this girl, which resolves with her running away. The details and intensity of these flashbacks increase as the episode progresses.
*Admiral Adama meets with Apollo and assigns him to investigate the death of Fisk even though it occurred on the Pegasus. He feels he wants someone he can trust rather than a crew member from the other ship who might be biased.
*While examining the room where Fisk died Lee finds a small fortune of luxury goods in Fisk's closet, including a gold bracelet with the monogram "E.T." on it.
*Gaius Baltar, who was unaware of Fisk's death, comes seeking him out and is shocked and worried that he might be implicated. After a few moments of awkwardness, he manages to talk himself out of trouble and leaves.
*Back on "Galactica" Lee confronts [[Saul Tigh|Colonel Tigh]] in his quarters about the bracelet which he had realized was [[Ellen Tigh|Ellen Tigh's]]. Tigh says that it was he and not his wife who traded it to Fisk for liquor, fruit, etc. for Ellen and himself. Tigh explains that Fisk was deeply involved in using ''Pegasus'' as a hub to fence black market goods.
*Dr. [[Cottle]]'s autopsy finds cubits jammed in Fisk's mouth after his death most likely as a warning to others. Adama realizes that Fisk was trying to undercut one of his black market suppliers, and they punished him for it.
[[Image:Leeshevon.jpg|Lee with Shevon.|thumb]]
*On ''[[Colonial One]]'', President Roslin, piecing together her [[Epiphanies|near-death recollections of Caprica]], becomes aware of Baltar's pre-[[Fall of the Twelve Colonies|holocaust]] contact with a copy of [[Number Six|the Humanoid Cylon]] known to the Fleet as "[[Shelly Godfrey]]" and "[[Gina Inviere]]." She candidly asks Dr. Baltar, her vice president, to resign. Offended by her request, Baltar begins to walk away, but Roslin stops him to say that it's an offer she will not make again. Baltar replies that while he never wanted any political power in his life or even the office at first, he wants to remain vice president now more than ever.
*While [[Lee Adama]] is exercising in ''Galactica'''s gym, [[Anastasia Dualla]] comes to him to bravely ask if the flirtations they exchange during training are leading anywhere. Adama tells her he has no idea how to respond, and Dualla leaves visibly upset.
*Lee Adama rushes to Shevon's room on ''Cloud 9'' after she calls for help. He finds Shevon and Paya bruised, and decides to take them to ''Galactica'', but is ambushed by thugs, who nearly choke him to death. As he is held within a breath of his life, he is confronted by the same "businessman" who was present at Fisk's death. He warns Lee to back off of the investigation. Moments later Apollo is knocked unconscious
*After coming to, Apollo notices the corpse of a man in the room. [[Tom Zarek]] drops by the room moments later, and discusses the black market with Apollo.
*Zarek points out that the black market does get supplies where they are needed. Nonetheless, Zarek mentions the central hub of the black market, ''[[Prometheus (ship)|Prometheus]]'', a ship so lawless it's practically "off the grid," where you can supposedly get anything. Zarek gives a name to the "businessman" -- [[Phelan]] -- and tells Apollo that he probably took Shevon there. Additionally, he points out that Phelan has given Apollo Fisk's murderer -- the thug with a bullet in his head -- and that it should be considered "a way out."
*Ignoring Zarek's advice Lee Adama boards ''Prometheus'' and while making his way to the center finds Paya and other children locked up.
*Apollo encounters Phelan in ''Prometheus''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s bar where he warns him that ''Galactica'' is fully aware of his location, and that the battlestar can vent ''Prometheus''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s air into space unless the black market is shut down.
*Phelan counters that the Fleet needs the black market explaining that it is like a pressure valve. Whenever a ship falls behind in the supply schedule, the black market fills the need. Phelan states that they sell all things to fill all wants, including children used as prostitutes which Adama finds completely objectionable. To make his point, Phelan has Shevon is dragged out who admits to having lured Lee to cloud 9 by pretending to be attacked.
*Snatching a gun from one of Phelan's guards, Adama threatens Phelan who does not believe he will shoot him and is shocked when Lee does.
*Apollo then turns to Phelan's guards, also in shock, and tells them that he's not going to shut down all black market trade because the Fleet needs it for vital supplies whether he likes it or not. However, they must continue their business at his whim only. If there are more killings, if they hold back essential medicines or exploit children, he will annihilate them without restraint.
*Apollo then tries to make up with Shevon but she rejects him. She makes Lee realize that he is simply using her as a replacement the girl he left on Caprica.
*Back on ''Colonial One'', Lee Adama with William Adama presents his report to the President. Roslin is upset that Apollo did not shut down the black market, but Apollo counters that they will never have a perfect system and there will always be a black market but at least this way they know where it is and therefore it can be monitored and controlled.

== Notes ==
*Ron D. Moore admits in his podcast that this episode did not live up to his expectations. A long complaint about failed goals he made in his blog is actually about this episode.
*Survivor count for this episode is 49,597. That is one less than last week's episode, "[[Epiphanies]]" in which a suicide bomber attacks the tylium [[refinery ship|refinery]]. However, bodies are seen blasted into space, and Adama actually says in dialog "people are dead," so more than one should have died. However, this number is occasionally offset by new babies born in the Fleet, which can account for some small discrepancies. That said, however, prior to her meeting with Baltar, Roslin is shown standing by her tally board, with a pen in her hand, suggesting she has just updated the number; this suggests the new count is intended to reflect the assassination of Fisk.
*Zarek notes that he is the representative of ''[[Astral Queen]]'', although in "[[Colonial Day]]," he was elected to represent the colony of [[Sagittaron]]. Given the nature of the conversation, however, he may have been speaking of his status as ''de facto'' leader of ''Astral Queen'' instead of his political position.
*As seen in "[[Final Cut]]," there are occasionally meetings of all the ships in the Fleet.
*Bill Duke (Phelan) also appeared in the sci-fi film ''[[Wikipedia:Predator (film)|Predator]]'', and played Bolivar Trask in ''[[Wikipedia:X-Men 3|X-Men 3]]''.
*Prostitution was legal in the Twelve Colonies; this is a nod to [[socialator]]s of the [[Battlestar Galactica (TOS)|Original Series]] ([[Podcast:Black Market]]).
*Apollo pilots a Raptor alone to get to ''Prometheus''. As also seen in "[[Pegasus (episode)|Pegasus]]" and "[[Resurrection Ship, Part I]]," he is qualified to fly both Vipers and Raptors.
*John Mann, the actor who portrayed [[Jackson Spencer]], the original Galactica CAG in the Miniseries, makes a second appearance in this episode (in a deleted scene) as [[Linden]], who directs Apollo to Phelan.
*Much of the regular cast, including [[Kara Thrace]], [[Sharon Valerii]], [[Karl Agathon]], [[Felix Gaeta]], [[Galen Tyrol]], and [[Cally]] do not appear in this episode.
*The scenes with Lee Adama and Gianne on Caprica where filmed at the same [[Filming locations (RDM)|location]] as the ones with Roslin's doctor in the [[Miniseries]]. This is evident from the spiral staircases.

*This is the third episode to use a "flash forward" introduction to the storyline as a hook (''[[wikipedia:in medias res|in medias res]]''); this was also used just two episodes previous in "[[Resurrection Ship, Part II]]." Ron Moore has said that the device was added after he was disappointed with initial cuts of the episode, as a way to add suspense. The narrative technique also appears in "[[Act of Contrition]]."
*To some viewers, Apollo's recent angst may appear as rather hastily added to the character. However, another facet of it is addressed in "Resurrection Ship, Part II" when he admits to Starbuck, "I didn't wanna come back alive."
*The Apollo-Dualla relationship, a story thread running since "[[Resistance (episode)|Resistance]]," appears to have been stopped very abruptly, with only Adama's emotional state as an excuse in ending their flirtation. The manner in which Dualla and Adama speak to each other seems out of character. Dualla later appears with [[Billy Keikeya]], where he says little, and Dualla seems ready to give Adama up and continue things more seriously with Billy.
*Ron Moore stated the relationship was introduced because the writers thought it would make an interesting love triangle.
*It is interesting to note Shevon's final reaction to and rejection of Adama. Given the dire straits a person in her position would find themselves in, one might think that she would be grateful for the patronage of a (relatively) powerful and generally decent man like Adama, regardless of whom he saw her as a substitute for.
** Shevon's rejection may merely have been choosing to be used on a level she was familiar with (working in the black market) as opposed to an unfamiliar or discomfiting one (as Adama's replacement girlfriend by proxy).
** Despite her limited screen time, Shevon is a multi-dimensional, believable character. While Ron Moore may not have thought about it, Shevon's moral compass has told her that she cannot accept Adama even if it gains her freedom from her way of life. Shevon remains in her profession instead of being with Adama because she believes it is the right thing to do.
*Like many murder mysteries, the episode appears to be without a special point or purpose other than to unravel the mystery. Perhaps the writers were attempting to stress the 'realism' of living in a "ragtag fugitive fleet" of civilians, in that there would probably be organized criminals carving out fiefdoms in which they would run drug, medicine, and prostitution rackets. The solution is self-contained, as the "good guy" promptly kills the leaders and shuts it down in its current state. All in all, the story merely serves as a vehicle to explore Lee Adama as a character.
*The show takes a really dark turn when it makes mention of child prostitution, even if this isn't anything that several modern police-dramas haven't done already, and nothing is "shown"; a character only mentions in dialog that he runs a child prostitution ring.
*The storyline of Apollo's pregnant girlfriend on Caprica is unusual in that this episode is the first mention of such a crucial backstory thread. Considering the extent to which the memory seems to weigh Lee down, it seems contrived to introduce it so late in the series, especially when there are [[Resurrection Ship, Part II|other circumstances]] that could have been used to explore his emotional turmoil. In addition, confusion arose concerning Shevon's line about Adama's old flame "want[ing] to give you a child." That is, many viewers may not have understood that Adama's old love was actually already pregnant.
*[[Jack Fisk]] being killed as easily as Cain is implausible. Admiral Adama is now escorted by Marines at all times. With Cain's [[Gina Inviere|killer still on the loose]], it would rational for Fisk to have some paranoia.
**Phelan and his men clearly had access to Fisk already and might have boarded ''Pegasus'' claiming to be on official business.
**Considering that an attempt on William Adama's life has already happened once, Marines should have been escorting him from the very beginning. With Fisk and Cain now both dead, there may be a standing Fleet or Colonial military order in place that automatically activates, similar to such real-world orders.
*The scene between Baltar and Roslin is interesting in its scripting and acting. Roslin is determined to be ''extremely'' polite, forceful, and cheery despite the fact that she is making a power play and now ''knows'' Baltar had something to do with the Fall of the Colonies.
*The episode incorporates several recognizable plot elements of [[w:Film Noir|Film Noir]] : the murder mystery plot, the central character as a "detective," a femme fatale character, the flashbacks to a lost love, the exploration of the darkness of humanity, and its ultimate acceptance of that darkness in a morally ambiguous ending.

== Questions ==
*How were the black market henchmen able to penetrate ''Pegasus'''s security and murder its second commanding officer in a short period? Were they able to enter and leave without notice, because Fisk's dealing with them was general knowledge? Or did enough crewmen aboard ''Pegasus'' assist them to get them that far?
*At the end of the episode, Zarek is walking in a crowd on ''Prometheus'', with one of Phelan's old men nearby. Is Zarek going to try to fill the power vacuum left in the wake of Phelan's death? Or is it just to show how everyone needs to use the black market, even someone like Tom Zarek who claims to wash his hands of involvement with it?
*Did Zarek somehow set up the entire incident to get Apollo to kill Phelan for him, allowing him to take over control of the black market?
*At the end of the episode William Adama tells Lee Adama, "you should have told me about the girl." Is it Shevon, the prostitute (the obvious, close-at-hand issue)? Or, is it the woman back on Caprica (the deeper-seated, much more affecting issue)?
*Why has Roslin not openly accused Baltar of collaborating with the Cylons after "[[Epiphanies]]"? Is it because she lacks proof?
*Who will take command of ''Pegasus'' following Fisk's death? ([[Barry Garner|Answer]])
*Where does the black market get all of its goods, given the finite supplies on the Fleet?

== Official Statements ==

*''In an interview in issue #197 of ''TV Zone'', James Callis (Dr. [[Gaius Baltar]]) said'': "Mary and I had a great deal of fun doing a scene where the President tells Baltar in no uncertain terms that she doesn’t like him and wants him to resign. He’s not very happy about that."

:'''Commander Jack Fisk''': Civilians wouldn't be civilians unless they had something to bitch about.

== Overview ==

== Summary ==

*Back on "Galactica"confronts [[Saul Tigh|Colonel Tigh]] in his quarters about the bracelet which he had realized was [[Ellen Tigh|Ellen Tigh's]].

== Notes ==

== Analysis ==

== Questions ==

== Official Statements ==
