The Cylon Basestars (also referred to as "baseships" or "Cylon battlestars") are by far the most prominent example of Cylon presence in the known universe. They easily dwarf a colonial battlestar and appear to be technologically superior in every way, including being able to release wings of hundreds of Cylon raiders at the same time (according to the number of launch "slots" on the Basestar, it can release 792 Raiders, which is a quite high number).

Beyond this, not much is known. Basestar operations would suggest that they have large crew compliments although there is ample evidence to suggest their operations are largely automated. Indeed, the large compliment of raiders would suggest on board manufacturing facilities (The BSG Bible).

Term used, in conjunction with a three digit number, to describe the location of a Dradis Contact. "Karem" describes the contact's position on an incremented disc perpendicular to the ecliptic. For example:

"Dradis Contact! Cylon Basestar, bearing 187, karem 221!"

This would indicate a Cylon Basestar 187 incrememnts to starboard, then 221 increments up froim the ecliptic. Note that, while this system is exactly the same system as used in other sci-fi shows such as "Star Trek (karem replaced with "mark"), the contacts in Battlestar Galactica have been located with numbers greater than 360, so it is assumed that some incrementation other than degrees is used.
