During the protest, where coffee and other objects were thrown at the Galactica party, the marines heard a shot.

Re-Imagined Series
: <i>Additional information is available on the Cylon War.</i>

The First Attack
As told by the Video Game, the Cylon Wars began as Humanity's bastard children, the Cylons, turned on their "parents" in a night of "blood and fire". Their rebellous acts caused the slaughter of countless thousands, if not millions.

Across the Twelve Colonies of Man, the Cylons waged a war against their masters that lasted many years. This war was waged amongst the stars as well as the Colonies. There are no specific battles to indicate the turning of the tides of war, though it is known that the Cylons were expelled from the now-combined Colonies of Man, and left to the stars.

There was an armistice and an attempt to maintain diplomatic relations with the Cylons, though this was ignored by the Cylons.

The first attack is depicted in a painting on the wall of Commander William Adama's cabin onbaord the Battlestar <i>Galactica</i>.

The Final Attack
The final attack came 40 years after the cessation of hostilities, the opening shot being the destruction of the Armistice Station by a basestar.

Carefully planned out by the Cylons, Humanity's defeat was ensured by Humano-Cylon agents, such as Number 6; Number 6 ensured that backdoors were placed in the Command Navigation Program, thus eliminating the Colonials ability to resist.

As a result of the re-emergence of network technologies (see: Cylon War), the Cylons could now repeat a tactic they had previously used.

As the Colonial Fleet, under the command of Admiral Nagala onboard the Battlestar <i>Atlantia</i>, was ripped asunder by Cylon forces, the Cylons began deploying nuclear warfare against the Colonies. Out of billions of humans, only 50,000 survived and escaped their Cylon enemies under the leadership of the battlestar <i>Galactica</i> (Mini-Series) or another surviving battlestar, while a resistance movement was formed on Caprica. Also there were other survivors that didn't make the rendezvous at Ragnar in time such as the Battlestar <i>Pegasus</i>, under the command of Admiral Nelena Cain

Original Series
: <i>Additional information is available on the Thousand Yahren War.</i>

The Cylon Attack was a sneak attack, similar to Pearl Harbor. After 1000 yahrens of war, the Humans vied for peace under Lord Baltar. (see: Cimtar Peace Accord) The peace was to take place at Cimtar, a moon in what is believed to be neutral territory. Instead of peace, the Cylons launched their largest onslaught against the Colonials.

The Cylons began their two-pronged attack:

First Prong: Elimination of the Battlestars at Cimtar
: <i>Additional information is available on the Battle of Cimtar (TOS).</i>

The Cylons used Cimtar as a launch platform for fighter groups, supported by Cylon tankers for fuel operations. Using their Raiders, the Cylons attacked the battlestars there. All battlestars, save the already prepared <i>Galactica</i>, were destroyed; the Cylons were thwarted from destroying the entire presence there. Leaving the survivors and Viper pilots of that battle, the <i>Galactica</i> headed towards the Twelve Colonies (TOS) in a vain effort to protect their homeworlds.

Second Prong: The Attack on the Colonies
Cylon basestars snuck by Colonial defenses, allowing an unstoppable attack on the Colonies. Whole planets were in flames and the Cylons exterminated all humans that remained, save those who were fortunate enough to flee the Colonies to join the Fleet Commander Adama assembled.

Overview
: Chaos is rampant as paramedics try to save Commander Adama's life after he is shot, and the Galactica is separated from the fleet.

Summary
On the Galactica
*After the shooting of Adama, a Cylon basestar ambushes the Colonial fleet, prompting Colonel Tigh to execute an emergency FTL jump procedure for the fleet to rendezvous at another point. When the Galactica jumps, it finds itself stranded from the rest of the fleet, and in the middle of nowhere.
*After being shot by Boomer, Adama is rushed to the ship's infirmary. Due to the fact that Doctor Cottle is not onboard the ship, a team of medics must work to stabilize Adama's condition.
*Lt. Gaeta devises a plan to find the co-ordinates of where the fleet jumped: he networks all the onboard computers aboard the Galactica, so it will only take 10 minutes to compute where the fleet is. The only problem is that the Galactica will have to jump all the way back to Kobol, and hold off the Cylons until the calculations have finished.
*Colonel Tigh goes to see the incarcerated Boomer, who insists she knows nothing about what's going on.
*Apollo is given permission to leave the brig on a provisional basis by Colonel Tigh and helps lead the squadron that will attack the basestar.
*Once the Galactica has jumped back to Kobol, the Viper's manage to hold off the oncoming waves of Cylon Raiders, although a Cylon troop carrier is shot down and crashes into the Galactica's starboard landing pod.
*Gaeta manages to calculate where the fleet is, and successfully jumps to meet with them.
*The medics successfully stabilize Adama's condition, although he is still in pretty rough shape.
*The crashed Cylon troop carrier seems completely destroyed as it lays on the Galactica's flight deck, but multiple sets of red sensors soon light up from inside, and a group of Cylon soldiers make their way out of the craft.

On Caprica
* In the Delphi Museum, Helo and Kara Thrace (Starbuck), after Starbuck attempts to shoot Sharon Valerii, talk about her being pregnant; Helo believes her, while Starbuck refuses to accept the fact.
* After Starbuck's attempt to shoot Valerii, she absconds from the Delphi Museum's grounds in the Cylon Raider. (Exclaims Starbuck: "The bitch took my ride.")

On Kobol
*On Kobol, the survivors of the Raptor crash head into the forest to avoid being seen by the Cylons.
*Because Socinus is dying, Chief Tyrol, Cally, and a crewmember named Tarn go back to the crash site to retrieve a medkit. On their way back, the trio are ambushed by Cylons, and only Tyrol and Cally manage to escape unharmed.

Questions
* Does Tigh recall that Gaius Baltar first tested his Cylon detector on Valerii? Or did he know in the first place?
* Regarding the firewall status display: What is not to say that the Cylons programmed the display, or more accurately the GUI interface for it, to show a false reading on their intrusion progress?
* Interesting connundrum: If Kelly is the Galacticas third-in-command, then why haven't we seen (or heard) more from him in the past? It seems to be more or less contrived.
* Just how many aboard the Galactica agree with Adama's decision to jail Roslin?
* What is the significance of the number "3"? It is prominently shown on a door that a younger William Adama enters (in Colonel Tigh's flashbacks); when Lieutenant Gaeta arranges 3 bars of soap beside each other after washing his hands in the bathroom, and is also shown during the sequence with the firewall (that Lieutenant Gaeta devises to slow down the infiltration of the Galactica's network by Cylon forces), that has 4 levels of encryption, with 3 sub-encryption codes for each barrier.
*How much time has passed between the point when the Galactica finally jumps back to rendezvous with the rest of the fleet, and when the Cylons make their way out of the crashed troop carrier? And for that matter, why hasn't anyone gone to clean up the wreckage from the flight deck?

Analysis
Notes
* Socinus's lungs are filling with fluid.
* Captain Kelly is the third in the chain of command, after Tigh.
** Note: It is possible that Kelly is only third in command because of the malefactions of Apollo and that, typically as fourth it is not a surprise that we have not seen him before. The sudden incapcity of two superiors has bumped him up the ladder.
** Note: Captain Kelly is the supervisor on the Galactica's flight deck (which was mentioned in the mini-series). This is the reason why the audience hasn't seen him up until this point.
* Adama and Tigh served on a freighter together after leaving the military; Adama was responsible for bringing Tigh back into the military when he reentered.
* This episode marks the first (known) attempt at networking Galacticas computer systems.
* Tigh's distrust of Baltar seems evident in this episode, particularly in the reply he made to Gaeta regarding the trust he had in the Lieutenant's programming abilities over Baltar's.
* Tigh's wife has taken residence in Tigh's quarters.
* The Cylons have unveiled a new craft in this episode: an armed troop carrier.

Bloopers
* During the scene on Caprica, Helo exclaims "for God Sake's" instead of the more Colonial "for Gods' Sakes".

Galactica 1980 is a science-fiction television series, and a spin-off from Battlestar Galactica. It was first broadcast on the ABC network in the United States from January 27, 1980 to May 4, 1980.

Synopsis
Set a generation after the original series, the Galactica and its fleet of 220 civilian ships have finally discovered Earth, only to find that the planet cannot defend itself against the Cylons as originally planned. Therefore, teams of Colonial warriors are covertly sent to the planet to work incognito with various members of the scientific community, hoping to advance Earth's technology.

Commander Adama and Colonel Boomer&mdash;now second-in-command in place of Colonel Tigh&mdash;send Captain "Boxey" Troy, who is the adopted son of Adama's own son Apollo, and Lt. Dillon to North America, where they become entangled with TV journalist Jamie Hamilton. The three of them devise ways to help Earth's scientists and outwit the Cylons.

Cast
* Lorne Greene - Commander Adama
* Robyn Douglass - Jamie Hamilton
* Herb Jefferson Jr. - Colonel Boomer
* Richard Lynch - Xavier
* Kent McCord - Captain Troy
* Allan Miller - Colonel Sydell
* James Patrick Stuart - Dr. Zee
* Robbie Rist - Dr. Zee
* Barry Van Dyke - Lieutenant Dillon

Greene (Adama) and Jefferson (Boomer) were the only major cast members of the original series to return, with Richard Hatch and Dirk Benedict both refusing to return after reading the initial scripts.

Short life
The series had a promising start with a three-hour adventure that saw Troy, Dillon and Jamie sent back in time to Nazi Germany to save the future, but the series could not sustain this momentum; it was unceremoniously cancelled after only ten episodes, many of which were multi-part stories, or what would be referred to now as arcs. The final episode featured the return of Dirk Benedict as Lt. Starbuck from the original series in a flashback episode, but it wasn't enough to save the series.

Many fans do not consider Galactica 1980 to be canonical with the original series (with the exception the final episode); many cite Galactica 1980 as one of the worst shows in science fiction history.

Syndication and beyond
The ten Galactica 1980 episodes were rolled into the television syndication package for Battlestar Galactica and were given the same title as its parent program. Several episodes were also released on home video under the title Conquest of the Earth.

* Richard Lynch - Xavier

Overview
: <i>After a sneak attack destroys human civilization as the Colonials know it; under Commander Adama the survivors set out to find a mythical planet called Earth.</i>

Summary
The Human-Cylon peace accords turn out to be a ruse by the genocidal Cylons, determined to exterminate all humanity. Only the Galactica and a ragtag fleet survive, journeying across the galaxy in search of long-lost sister civilization Earth. Lured to the planet Carillon for fuel and relaxation, the fleet barely survives a trap by the Ovions, an underground, insectoid species in league with the Cylons.
#Adama represents Caprica and commands <i>Galactica</i>.
#Adar is president and commands the <i>Atlantia</i>.

* The Cylons have an hierarchal imperical society, lead by an emperor (Imperious Leader).
* The Cylons wish to exterminate human life as Colonials have interfered with Cylon efforts. (see: Hasari)

Name: Baltar

Title: Lord / Count

Position: Quorum of Twelve Representative / Commander of the Cylon Pursuit Force

Portrayed By: John Colicos

Lord Baltar, responsible for the Cylon sneak attack that all but destroyed the Colonial race, pursues the remnants of Colonial civilization across the star-laced heavens.

Biography
Baltar's Deeds
Better known as the traitor to Humanity, Baltar had a relatively prolific life as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve before the Colonies destruction. Prior to betraying humanity to the Cylons (TOS), he apparently financed and plotted many expeditions of the Cyranus Galaxy during the Thousand Yahren War. These surveys and expeditions also included the tylium-rich planet of Carillon, though the fact was never revealed as in reports to the Quorum.

For many yahren, he apparently plotted to use the Cylons as his iron fist to bring down the colonies under his dictatorship. Using the peace treaty as a ruse -- to both sides obviously -- he managed to work up the Humans excitement for the treaty as well as give the Cylons what they wanted: the eradication of the threat of the lifeform known as man.

The Cylons took the opportunity... however they took everything for granted and destroyed Baltar's plans for domination. Since his services were unneeded by the Imperious Leader, he was given thanks and a public execution. He was likely sent off ship to Cylon, or a widely known outpost of the Cylons. (Saga of a Star World)

The First Salvation of Baltar
The new Imperious Leader, Barkol, spared Baltar's disheveled life to seek the Human remnant; basically due to his thought patterns being akin to the Humans. (Saga of a Star World,Lost Planet of the Gods) Bestowed a fully equipped basestar, along with Lucifer, a IL-series cogitator, Baltar tracked down the <i>Galactica</i> and decided to abduct a Warrior -- Lieutenant Starbuck -- to convince the warrior that he wanted peace, as well as to discover why the Centurions flew so erratically. His return would allow for the Colonial survivors to believe in Baltar, and Lord Baltar even went as so far as to land on Kobol to prove his intentions of peace. Using the Quorum medallion, he managed to gain entry into the Ninth Lord of Kobol's tomb. After trying to paint Adama as a liar who has spread lies of his involvement with the Cylons, Baltar proved an annoyance as he tried to rob the tomb of the Ninth Lord.

While Starbuck was returned to the surface to tell the newly trained Centurion pilots what Baltar promises, Lucifer decided to ignore Baltar's orders and begin attacking the Fleet and Kobol. Debris fell upon the traitorous Lord Baltar, effectively trapping him on Kobol while the Colonials fled yet again. (Lost Planet of the Gods)

The Second Salvation of Baltar
The Cylons saved Baltar in order to, yet again, attempt to stop Adama's rag-tag fugitive fleet, seeking to destroy the last Battlestar.

He managed to track them from the Cyranus Galaxy -- home of the Cylons and Colonials -- and to the sector containing the prison colony Proteus. He apparently lost sight of the fleet for a while, when the Fleet changed course due to Robber's transmissions back to Cylon hands (although he thought he was contacting the Aeries colony). (The Long Patrol)

Baltar planned to herd the <i>Galactica</i> and her fleet to Arcta, where the Ravishol Pulsar was based, so that he could finish off Adama's fleet once and for all. Baltar's subordinate, Command Centurion Vulpa, commanded the Arcta base; however Baltar's plan was thwarted and the Fleet managed to pass the planet relatively unscathed. Obviously he would have to find some way to explain this military "flounder" to the Imperious Leader… (The Gun on Ice Planet Zero, Part I)

Baltar managed to get in another attack by destroying the Fleet's two agro ships, and the destruction of the crops on the third. However, the agron colony of Sectar was nearby; Adama managed to solicit a trade from the ruling populous of the main Sectar city, Serenity. (The Magnificent Warriors)

The traitor also attempted to capture a warrior to extract information from; his Cylon patrol managing to disable Starbuck's Centurion near Antilla, however this failed. Baltar discovered a rivalry between the two Cylon IL-series cogitators, Lucifer and Specter, which he found amusing. Although it was Specter who managed to achieve the final laugh as he managed to con Baltar into believing an altered-version of the situation of Antilla. This version that Baltar believed in helped Specter maintain some dignity and his ability to obtain another position without being a "has-been". (The Young Lords)

Sometime thereafter, Baltar yet again managed to get a chance to rid the universe of Adama and his Fleet. By ridding the Imperious Leader of the Human threat represented by the Fleet, Baltar hoped to make the Cylon's "outer capitol" of Gamoray his seat of power. (The Living Legend, Part I) The timely appearance of the legendary Commander Cain spoiled this opportunity, and others as Cain and arch nemesis Commander Adama made Baltar into a fool. Baltar was almost killed in his personal Cylon raider as the <i>Pegasus</i> nearly collided into the ship. (The Living Legend, Part II)

Baltar did survive the engagement to aid the Imperious Leader when the main city of Gamoray was being assaulted by Colonial forces. (The Living Legend, Part II)

Baltar's Selfless Surrender
When Count Iblis manifested itself to the Fleet, Baltar was allegedly directed to surrendering; as per the two conditions set out by the Quorum to test the seemingly omnipotent Iblis. He was later chastised and sent spinning into his own reserved cell on the Prison Barge, although Baltar attempted to help the Colonials discover what the the manifestations they encountered were. (Only to find out that they were Beings of Light, mythical figures that maintained the universe, working to aid others indirectly.) (War of the Gods)

Baltar as an Aid
Baltar was essential in finding out his electronics expert and Ortega's murder, Karibdis, who no one was able to recognize. After Apollo extradited Baltar from the Prison Barge, Baltar and Apollo managed to thwart Karibdis from killing them both. (Murder on the Rising Star)

Apollo's deal, which guaranteed Baltar's freedom from incarceration in return for his assistance in catching Karibdis, wasn't followed through.

During the temporary "visitation" of the Eastern Alliance personnel commanded by Commandant Leiter, Baltar plotted his escape with the assistance of the Borellian Nomen (Taba, Maga and Bora) and Leiter's enforcers from Terra's Eastern Alliance. "Lead" by Baltar, the prisoners captured eleven Quorum members, Lieutenants Boomer and Sheba, and the Council Security in the bay at the time.

He furnished Adama with an ultimatium: return the Cylon Raider and its pilots, as well as the Eastern Alliance vessel, fully fueled or be responsible for to deaths of his prisoners. (The prisoners being in a shuttle rigged with detonators attached to the shuttle's hull. However, he was subsequently tricked into a false sense of security upon boarding his personal raider, outwitted by two dysfunctional Cylons and two warriors.

His partners in crime were more fortunate, escaping -- much to his eminent ire… More for him to be doing mess hall duty, betwixt serving Grid Barge slop and sputtering escape plans that do not inspire confidence from his other "brethren". (Baltar's Escape)

There were other uses for Baltar: namely his knowledge of the Cylon's basestars. Tired of running from the Cylons, Commander Adama decided to mount an attack on a Cylon base star a patrol had encountered. Adama believed that the base star was the only Cylon presence within the galaxy they were traversing. In return for Baltar's aid, Adama promised adequate shelter and provisions on a habitable planet, as well as a short-range transmission device. With Baltar's instructions, Starbuck and Apollo managed to disable the base star's sensors, thus allowing the <i>Galactica</i> to destroy the base star. (The Hand of God)

Notes
In the theatrical version of <i>Battlestar Galactica</i>'s pilot movie, Baltar was beheaded in front of the Imperious Leader. However, upon advent of an order for a television series, and Glen Larson's like for the character of Lord Baltar, caused the entire death scene for Baltar to be re-shot -- being spared at the last moment in the televised pilot.

It is also evident for Battlestar fans to notice the different sides of Baltar, in Saga of a Star World and The Young Lords he was shrewd and deviously evil; The Living Legend showed Baltar as an insane and delusional power-hungry man who would dare cross the Imperious Leader; and in War of the Gods, Baltar evidently demonstrates intelligence and dignity by playing with fate and facing the Fleet's Quorum. Additionally, he shows another version of himself by being a bumbling imbecile, thanks to Battlestar's writers apparent incompetence in deciding what Baltar was and should have been during the series' run.

Baltar was not the only role that the late John Colicos portrayed, in fact he is well known in the science fiction genre for portraying <i>Star Trek</i>'s first Klingon, Commander Kor. The character Kor was reprised in the third <i>Star Trek</i> series, <i>Star Trek: Deep Space Nine</i> for three episodes: "Blood Oath", "The Sword of Kahless", and "Once More Unto the Breach". Colicos, like Canadian-born actor William Shatner, is also of Canadian descent and a well-received Shakespearian actor. Colicos is also well known as Doctor Mikkos Carridine from "General Hospital".

Lord Baltar is also known as Count Baltar. Although both "Lord" and "Count" were used in addressing Baltar at some point, the former is more applicable to the series, since the latter title is used only in the pilot.

Watchers of the series can also note the intended-to-be-subtle changes in the scenes concerning Baltar's talk with the new Imperious Leader. In Saga of a Star World, the Imperious Leader states that Baltar will vie for peace on the behest of the Cylons, as they are powerful enough to be "tolerant" of the Humans. However, in the beginning scenes of Lost Planet of the Gods, this part is conspicuously absent; which leads the fans to believe one of two things: (I) the "olive branch" mandate was not part of the series canon to make the series more interesting; or (II) Baltar attacked the Fleet of his (and Lucifer's) own prerogatives, in which Baltar (could have) made it appear that the surviving Humans were intolerant to the peace offering, which would likely be to convince the Leader that his position was the wrong one to take.

Overview

Overview
: <i>Colonel Tigh's world is turned upside down when his wife arrives on the Galactica - but is she all she professes?</i>

Summary
* Roslin comes aboard the Galactica as Adama receives a report that Baltar’s Cylon detector is operational
* Unable to shake Conoy’s words to her (Flesh and Bone), she wants Adama to take the test first; he reluctantly agrees
* When a lone Cylon Raider shows up, Lee Adama is ordered to intercept, and Tigh is stunned to learn Adama is off-ship
* The Raider is crippled, and a Raptor is dispatched to gather intel on it
* Adama returns to the Galactica with a further shock for Tigh: his wife
* Roslin calls Baltar to check on the progress of Adama’s Cylon test – only to find Adama has cancelled so that a woman called “Ellen” can be tested. Roslin orders Baltar to restart Adama’s test immediately
* Roslin summons Tigh to Colonial One and reveals her suspicions regarding Adama, and challenging a defensive Tigh over Adama’s behaviour in leaving the Galactica unannounced
* Tigh takes the wind out of Roslin’s sails when he states Adama was off-ship so he could collect Tigh’s missing wife – Ellen
* After Tigh has left her office, Roslin calls Baltar and orders him to stop Adama’s test and resume Ellen’s
* Later, at a dinner in Adama’s quarters, Ellen behaves with a mixture of her old self – trying to play footsie with Lee Adama under the table, and trying to flirt with him over the table – and strange curiosity concerning Earth
* Adama deflects her probing by asking how it could be that she got aboard a ship, the Rising Star without anyone having any knowledge or her or of treating her during her alleged 3 weeks of being unconscious
* Ellen simply shrugs off the questions in her apparently drunken state and breaks up the party with her “drunken” playing
* As she and her husband return to their quarters, they encounter Baltar, with whome she openly flirts, both annoying Tigh and raising Six’s curiosity
* After Baltar has departed, Ellen deflects her husband’s anger at her behaviour by claiming Adama wants her, then dragging Tigh after Baltar
* In Baltar’s lab, a row is brewing over the various tests that should have been carried out; things being even more complicated when Tigh and his wife arrive, and the disagreements and suspicions become a three-way argument, which is broken up when Adama, Lee and Tigh are summoned to CIC
* The Cylon Raider has stopped behaving oddly, and is on an intercept course for Galactica. Alert Fighters are dispatched at Tigh’s order, and the Raider is destroyed
* Later, back in Baltar’s lab, Ellen’s test results come through and are apparently green. Baltar, however simply states to Six that having everything turn up green makes life a lot easier.

On Caprica:
*Helo and Valerii are trying to avoid the Cylons by running through the storm drains under a city
*Valerii has a plan - she claims to have overheard the Cylons discussing a huge base at Delphi, she believes they can steal a ship from there and get off the planet
*Doral and Six are definitely affected by the fact that even though Valerii has run off, she is experiencing emotions they have never had - as is Helo.

Questions
*Is Ellen Tigh an Humano-Cylon?
*What is Baltar hoping to gain from keeping the test results secret?

Analysis
An episode that cleverly mixes intrigue and humour to conjure a rich tapestry that is somewhat different from earlier episodes – but no less entertaining in the questions it raises.

The intrigue is initially driven out of Roslin’s paranoia towards Adama, but quickly re-centres on Ellen Tigh.

Roslin’s paranoia is fed by Leoben Conoy’s last words to her in “Flesh and Bone” – she is genuinely concerned that Adama is a Cylon, and his pre-occupation with Ellen Tigh doesn’t help calm her fears. But even when the mystery surrounding Adama’s actions is resolved, the intrigue doesn’t let up: just who or what is Ellen Tigh? Human or Cylon?

The weight of evidence for her being human is almost overwhelming. She is vindictive, manipulative, calculating (witness her ability to play footsie under the table with Lee Adama after hearing about his brother's death), but human nonetheless. She has clearly been a destructive force in Tigh's life - and most likely the reason for his drinking problem, and despite her claims to want a reconcilliation, it is clear that little has really changed within her: she is man-hungry, and delights in sowing the seeds of mischief.

BUT - and there is always a "but" in BSG, the writers throw in just enough to create doubt:
*Why is it that - as Adama points out - no-one can remember her either being aboard the Rising Star or being treated for her injuries until the last few days?

*Why can’t the Captain of the Rising Star remember how she came to be aboard his ship. Her "rescue" from Picon sounds so dramatic, surely someone would remember her coming aboard the ship, whether she was conscious or not?
*And why is her interest at the dinner table focused singularly on the subject of Earth? Is it really the "talk of the fleet", or is there something behind her persistence?
*She operates in a manner strikingly similar to a cross between Six and Conoy. Like Six, she is not afraid to use her sexual mores against men; like Conoy, her words seem laced with half-truths and are frequently manipulative and border on the insidious
*Finally, there is her comment on meeting Baltar, “Oh, I know exactly who you are.” On the one hand, it could simply be a result of her recognising Baltar as a leading scientist and (no doubt) playboy, and her predatory nature kicking-in. On the other hand, knowing exactly who someone “is” usually means a person is not fooled: they know intimate secrets about the individual they are meeting, and so the comment is usually taken as a thinly-veiled threat. Does Ellen Tigh know more than she is letting on?

Even the denouement concerning Ellen Tigh’s heritage is open to interpretation: Baltar proclaims her to be human, but then admits to Six he’s decided all results are going to be “green”; as he puts it: “no muss, no fuss”. He won’t even reveal the true result of the test to Six.

Six’s reaction to Ellen Tigh is equally interesting: “Something here, isn’t there?” she states after Ellen’s unconventional introduction to Baltar – and it is doubtful she is referring to the flirting that takes place; rather, her words are a warning, as is her follow-up comment: “You should be watching her.” Six has sensed something in Ellen Tigh, and it is something she doesn’t trust.

So, could it be that Ellen Tigh is a Cylon? Certainly, it has been established that there are 12 models of Cylon, so again, this leaves room for her to be one. But – again – if she were, that would raise an interesting precedent: it would mean that that Cylons can replicate living (or once-living) humans. Were this to be the case, it would significantly alter the balance of things. For this reason, more than any other, it is unlikely Ellen Tigh is anything more than a human woman with an agenda of her own.

Meanwhile, on Caprica things also continue to take an interesting turn. Now fugitives together, Helo and Valerii are finally making an attempt to get off the planet, and Valerii is reaching the point where if she doesn’t admit her status to Helo, he’s going to guess. Above them – literally - we are given further insight into Cylon motivations for what was occurring around Helo, and once again it all seems to boil down to the emotions generated by love: loyalty, need, protectiveness, desire, generosity, anguish, the motivations it creates – all of which appear to be beyond Cylon understanding, even though they are capable of other, baser emotional responses, as witnessed by Six’s tears and Doral’s hurt envy. And there is still that small matter of procreation hanging in the air...

Perhaps the one weak link in the episode is the arrival of the Cylon Raider. Despite all the material the production crew have to play with in this episode, this one thread sticks out from the rest and almost screams “Padding!” at the top of its voice.

As an attempt to heighten concern about Adama’s real motivations (the Raider turning up while he is out and about in a Raptor), it is nothing short of clumsy. As a means of confirming the fact that the Colonials don’t have FTL systems of a comparable size to those contained in the captured Raider, and are thus keen to find out all they can about a “working” version, it is short on drama. Was the Raider really crippled? Was it playing a game with the Colonials - if so, to what purpose? What caused Starbuck to come to this conclusion? None of the answers to these questions are even hinted at - much less explained, leaving the entire Raider situation something that has a big “So what?” hanging over it.

But this aside, “Secrets and Lies” serves up another interesting blend of character-driven drama that demonstrates that Battlestar Galactica is also capable of some fine humour.
Notes
*The script was originally called "Secrets and Lies". However, "Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down" is the official title for the episode, according to Ronald D. Moore.
*It is 3 days since the events of "Flesh and Bone".
*There are now 47,905 survivors in the fleet. That’s a loss of some 52 people since the last count
*Billy’s relationship with Dualla is picking up, despite his attempts to pump her for information
*Tigh’s alcoholism was more than likely kicked-off by his wife – either directly or through her infidelity – or possibly both
*Baltar apparently has no intention of being honest about the results of his Cylon tests
*The test themselves apparently take 11 hours to generate results (although Boomer’s result in “Flesh and Bone” was obtained in far less time than this – less than 8 hours, in fact)
*The Galactica has a forward observation lounge that has become a much sought-after trysting-place, with individuals and couples rotated through it at regular intervals
*The Cylons have established a major base at Delphi, another major city on Caprica

Noteworthy Dialogue
<i>As Starbuck walks in on Baltar, as he "entertains" himself in his lab:</i>

*<b>Baltar</b> (pulling up his pants and turning to face Starbuck): So, um, what can I do for you?
*<b>Starbuck</b> (eyeing him with abject disgust): You can zip up your fly!
*"'Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down' was originally called 'Secrets and Lies', or 'Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down' by Jeff (Vlaming). And when I saw those titles on the script, I knew we had to go with 'Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down'. It was too good. Too good a title to let lie on the cutting room floor." -- Ronald D. Moore podcast
*"'Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down' began life as a very different episode than it ultimately came out to be. It was originally going to be a riff on 'Crimson Tide'." -- Ronald D. Moore podcast
*"It did feel right that, perhaps, there was one place; that perhaps there was one area of the ship, which accepted a window or a port to look out and that it would be a fairly confined space for the crew on these very long, deep space missions that probably lasted months, if not years. And that there might be a place where they can go to and just stargaze. And in this situation, it seemed like there would be a lot of people lining up to try and look out at the stars, you know, a break from the monotony of staring at metal walls." -- Ronald D. Moore podcast, talking about the observation area of the Galactica
*"The long and the short of it was that we had just come out of a very heavy, very dark, very disturbing episode. And the very next episode was supposed to be 'Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down' which was all about a very disturbing, very dark, very (sort of) unhappy episode where our two -- two of our lead characters started pointing guns at one another. So there came a point when I just decided, well, lets just punt. Lets not do the dark and brooding episode. Lets try a different tone. Lets see if the show can withstand something lighter. Lets try something that's closer to a comedy, or as close to a comedy as Galactica can withstand." -- Ronald D. Moore podcast

A yahren is a Colonial measurement of time.

Analagous to an Earth year; plural form is same as singular, "yahren".

Note
Within some fan circles, a yahren is considered to be around two-thirds (2/3) the length of an Earth year, thus helping to explain the relative longevity of Colonial people compared to Terran humans.

In the reimagined series the colonials say year instead.

Flight Sergeant Jolly can be best described as an overweight, jovial, likable fellow; and a quite competent Viper pilot. He was involved in the discovery of the pluton poisoning of the foodstuffs they had gotten from the Colonies before making way. Jolly was also involved in discovering the tylium deposits on Carillon after making way through the Straits of Madagon. He, Serina, and Apollo were subsequently captured and brought to Lotay, Queen of the Ovions.

He was one of the many Viper pilots that had been unable to attend the ceremonies since Adama expected the Cylons to attack, and sure enough they did. Jolly came riding in atop of a landram and drove off the Cylon onslaught as the Colonials had fled the Ovions glorified farm. He commented later on that Adama had expected the attack and had uniforms of the pilots distributed to anyone he could find -- civilians, techs, and cooks -- and made a quip about the person who received his uniform: "You should see the one who got my uniform!" (Saga of a Star World)

He and Lieutenant Boomer often flew together, and discovered a Cylon base on an asteroid. They managed to escape relatively undetected, but managed to contract an life-threatening infectious disease that apparently manage to manifest itself within a majority of the Viper corps, save Apollo and Starbuck who were delayed. (Lost Planet of the Gods)

Suffice it to say, Jolly recovered and was only one of two Viper pilots who found out the Cylon agenda to attack and destroy the agro ships. He managed to save the day by saving the third agro ship (Agro Ship 9), but couldn't save the crops onboard. He also accompanied Adama, Apollo, Starbuck, Boomer, Boxey and Siress Belloby to Sectar, but stayed behind on the shuttle. (The Magnificent Warriors)

He was later involved with several engagements, and was one of the first to be abducted by the colossal Ship of Lights. Of course, after Iblis was cast out due to Iblis' killing of Apollo, Jolly was returned along with Boomer, Bojay, and other taken Viper pilots. (WOTG) He later on also assisted Starbuck, Apollo, Salik and Cassiopeia sneak Terrans Michael and Sarah back on <i>Lunar Avion</i> appropriated by Michael and keep up the façade that they were transferring the children off of the ship. Prior to this, he referred to them, almost humorously, as "Earthlings". When their deception was revealed by Reese, Boomer quipped to Jolly: "Jolly! You forgot the kids!" This scene gave the Lunar Avion the opportunity to leave the <i>Galactica</i>'s bays and for Apollo and Starbuck to "pursue". (Greetings from Earth)

Portrayed by Tony Swartz

Notes
There are two instances of Jolly's rank being that of a Lieutenant:

* Sire Geller, in "Greetings From Earth", referred to Jolly as thus. Whether he was actually promoted or an indication of Geller's senility -- or just simply a script screw up -- is never clarified.
* Jolly was referred to as lieutenant in the novelization of "Saga of a Star World".
