Regarding the questions section[edit]

"Questions - yet again, this section is for questions -- not possible answers to questions!"

It just doesn't make any sense. A questions section without answers has no real purpose. I've seen speculative material posted over and over again at that section. Some questions are pertinent, but there are others which can be easily answered and shouldn't be there.

The problem was that people went too far with it, especially at the beginning of Season 3. There were lots of trivial questions and overly lenghty replies. Also back and forthing where other people replied with counter arguments and questions, leading to lots of fanwanking and baseless speculation and opinionating. Very annoying to read.
To me, the current solution feels restrictive too, but otherwise it's hard to draw a line on what to allow and what not. However, I agree that some questions have answers that could easily be explained within the context of the episode and without speculating much (like deducing Helo's or Kat's rank from their pins). Still, it's better than what went on before. --Serenity 07:16, 9 November 2006 (CST)
As Serenity points out above, people went too far with the questions section. We're an encyclopedic reference, not a message board. Firstly, much of our episode guide format is derived from the Lurker's Guide to Babylon 5 (an excellent resource that pre-dates even Wikipedia), and we use its methods as a guide to our own episode guide. Secondly, any answers to questions given in the episode can be placed in either the analysis or notes sections, which is the more pertinent place for answers. Also, in general though, may I suggest that you comments of this nature to the Wikipedian Quorum, since this is more a general question and not specifically a question I should (alone) answer. Thank you. :-) -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 09:17, 9 November 2006 (CST)
I see. Makes prefect sense now. Thanks ! --User:MAIA

Advertisements[edit]

Joe, I'm happy to see that the site is back up. I see that you've implemented some animated GIF advertisements. Shane and I had previously discussed some other alternatives. Is there a currently open discussion on site support? --April Arcus 16:06, 11 November 2006 (CST)

Hi again from Wikia[edit]

Hi Joe,

I saw the discussion about hosting, it sounds like you decided to try something else for now. Best of luck with the adbrite tools. If it is of any value, we'd be happy to discuss hosting you with the following if you ever change your mind

  • Ads only on content pages for registered users (not on talk, history, edit, etc) if that makes the site cleaner and faster loading.
  • Offering attribution, Youtube, easier photo uploading (try our image button), polling, mapping and a bunch of other extensions that have improved functionality
  • Links from the wikia home page to help you grow

That said, I respect the desire to build what you have, so best of luck with a great site - I'm a fan of the show and of your work.

Gil @ Wikia

Hi Gil! Thanks for your kind words! My team and I will look into the features you've mentioned above. You also mentioned something about a link from the Wikia home page. We can still do this, if you'd be willing. Basically, we would add you to our "Friends" box on our main page and you can link to us from the Wikia main page. Would this be feasible? Obviously, if something changes, I'll let you know. Thank you, again. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 10:24, 30 November 2006 (CST)

Those are some really cool features, perhaps we could look into implementing a few of them here. I still have lots of concerns about moving to Wikia however, there would be a big increase in adverts on the whole wiki and of course if the site got popular enough to make a profit, you wouldn't see a penny of that Joe. I worry about the overall loss of control. The only real benefit is an already existing massive database of users already signed up and the advertising on a popular site. --Mercifull (Talk/Contribs) 11:40, 30 November 2006 (CST)

Welcome[edit]

Thanks for the welcome --Trödel 10:45, 6 December 2006 (CST)

Requested Pages[edit]

Joe, I don't think you should create requested pages if you don't have anything to fill them with. The red links encourage people to start articles - they don't see that nothing's there, they have no reason to contribute anything. --April Arcus 01:43, 14 December 2006 (CST)

The {{requested}} tag however adds things to the Community Portal, which people can then see to add pages for. By adding the requested tag things are actually listed rather than only appearing on the "broken links" page --Mercifull (Talk/Contribs) 03:50, 14 December 2006 (CST)
Special:Wantedpages serves the same function, and is the better choice, IMO. --April Arcus 14:00, 14 December 2006 (CST)
Actually, the reason for requesting (as opposed to merely linking and thus having to deal with the "red link" effect) is for the benefit of Battlestar Wiki:Tasks. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 17:30, 14 December 2006 (CST)
And why is this worth losing the red links? --April Arcus 06:00, 15 December 2006 (CST)
I think that having a list of pages wanted on the community portal might entice people to actually create those pages rather than wading though the red links. The majority of the red links are French anyway or direct links to images. --Mercifull (Talk/Contribs) 06:47, 15 December 2006 (CST)
As Mercifull rightfully points out, a majority of the red links are mainly links in articles being translated, as well as defunct image and talk pages that do not exist yet. Also, Special:Wantedpages isn't particularly user friendly for those uninitiated in the ways of the wiki, and I say that viewing the wantedpages listing using a "customer" or non-technical user POV. The wantedpages feature on Mediawiki is very much structured to be used by the veterans or wiki-inclined. The ultimate goal is to make things as user friendly as possible. Any articles that really need to be created are deeply buried in the 700+ red links on that page. On a related note, I've noted that Memory Alpha's RC page has a brief task list at the top. I feel that we would only benefit from having something similar as well. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 15:54, 15 December 2006 (CST)

New Admins Needed?[edit]

What's you're feeling on the admin count? I've got my eye on a potential candidate, but wondered if there was currently a need to recruit some. --Steelviper 10:28, 22 December 2006 (CST)

If the consensus is to add one I'd most likely work up the RFA page after Christmas, possibly even after the new year (just so it doesn't seem like we're trying to "sneak" it through). --Steelviper 10:42, 22 December 2006 (CST)

Verb Tense?[edit]

I just saw that an admin changed the verb tense on the edits I made to the Military Ranks (RDM) page to the passive, past tense, voice although the wiki policy states that we are to write in the active, present tense, voice.

When exactly is it appropriate to use the differing verb tense? --Tungsten 12:55, 23 April 2007 (CDT)

The content is more "real world" and so falls under a different set of guidelines, see: Battlestar Wiki:Real Point of View. I didn't change the tense. It's still present. To be honest, I can't really remember why I changed the voice. It wasn't really wrong per se. In fact, I think I'll change it back. It looks better the way it was :s --Serenity 13:17, 23 April 2007 (CDT)
O sorry about that. I actually thought I asked Serenity. Must have had to many tabs open and hit the wrong one :). Thanks for the feedback. I'm pretty new to this whole wiki contributions thing and just wanted to make sure I got the rules down so I don't make a mess of things :). Thank you both. --Tungsten 02:12, 24 April 2007 (CDT)
Well as said, you didn't do anything wrong. I think I thought it looked better the other way. Just a style thing. But I reverted my edit after thinking about it some more. While we appreciate that you check the rules beforehand, don't worry about messing up. If you break some style convention 1 or 2 times, an admin will usually tell you on your user page, and correct it. But it's no big thing. Just saves us work mopping after other people if they know the stuff. --Serenity 04:41, 24 April 2007 (CDT)
