Late congratulations

Hello, Joe! Until a few hours ago, I had no idea that the Battlestar Wiki had been restored months ago. Thanks for fighting the very long fight! -- BlueResistance (talk) 16:18, 6 January 2020 (PST)

Hello, Blue! Happy to see you back! It's been a long time, for sure, but it's worth it. I look forward to continuing on into 2020 and beyond! Good hunting. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 18:43, 7 January 2020 (PST)

Allowing user CSS and JS use

Hi Joe,
I wish you a Happy New Year! Hope you're fine. Is it possible please to modify the LocalSettings.php file as followed:

$wgAllowUserCss = true;
$wgAllowUserJs = true;

This to allow work on CSS in order to look like the French Wiki (color and scheme) for testing if you want to. After the right attempts, I would like to implement the css on the MediaWiki:Timeless.css page. Thank you very much. Cheers! --LIMAFOX76 (talk) 11:09, 18 January 2020 (PST)

Done and done! -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 16:55, 18 January 2020 (PST)
Hi Joe,
Here is a first glimpse of what could be Battlestar Wiki with a look similar to the French one. Tell me what you think... Some reverse writing (white on white) must be fixed. --LIMAFOX76 (talk) 02:10, 24 January 2020 (PST)
Hi Joe, I updated my "Main Page" example (see on the right). Tell me what you think. Cheers! --LIMAFOX76 (talk) 00:01, 27 January 2020 (PST)
Is there a way to use that skin (as a standard) on the german page? Enabran (talk) 14:20, 4 April 2020 (PDT)
Yes. I wanted to test and tweak it on the English wiki before I rolled it out on the Media Repository and the German wiki. I think I'm nearly done with the testing. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate

Allowing download of TTF and OTF files

Joe, can you please add the "ttf" and "otf" extensions in the Battlestar Wiki Media LocalSettings.php authorized files so I would be able to use extra fonts for the wiki's look.
Thank you very much! Cheers! --LIMAFOX76 (talk) 04:22, 24 January 2020 (PST)

Best to email me the files sent me directly, so I can upload these directly to the Skins folders: webmaster (at) battlestarwiki (dot) org. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 16:51, 24 January 2020 (PST)
I dove in and modified the "Timeless" CSS, cloning it into "Daybreak" and have begun additional stylings, see: MediaWiki:Daybreak.css and MediaWiki:Daybreak.js.
Once things are locked in on EN, I'll deploy on DE and the Media Repository, too. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 09:42, 26 March 2020 (PDT)
I am happy to see the old look back! :-D Enabran (talk) 10:22, 26 March 2020 (PDT)

The Return of... the spammers!

Hi Joe,
It seems that the spammer bots (or not) have found a way to strike back. May it is time to add some new questions the the Questy-Captcha inside the LocalSettings.php file. I made some for "my" English version attempt. I'll send you via email to your admin.
Cheers! --LIMAFOX76 (talk) 13:34, 14 March 2020 (PDT)

Cheers! Received your email. Thanks! -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 15:11, 14 March 2020 (PDT)
Hi Joe,
It seems that the spammers are attacking the German wiki. I cannot prevent them as I have no admin right. Can you do something please? Thank you. Cheers!--LIMAFOX76 (talk) 07:34, 19 March 2020 (PDT)
On it. Thank you! -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 16:31, 20 March 2020 (PDT)
Looks like Enabran already handled it! Cheers! -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 16:34, 20 March 2020 (PDT)

Update: I've removed some of the older CAPTCHA questions, since they were easily cracked (ergo the influx of spammers as of late). Furthermore, given our increase in SEO, I suspect that spammers are salivating and thus we're seeing a lot more attention now than we did when we relaunched. Reminds me of the "good ol' days." -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 08:44, 21 March 2020 (PDT)

147! That's crasy though. Big job! Ouf! --LIMAFOX76 (talk) 09:10, 21 March 2020 (PDT)
Can you please disable the annoying captcha questions for my account here. It is really disturbing my work here and you know I will do no mess here. And can you repair or reintroduce the page click counter? Enabran (talk) 10:22, 26 March 2020 (PDT)
Hi Enabran, the page click counter has been disabled on recent versions of MediaWiki. You need another extension to enable it. Cheers! --LIMAFOX76 (talk) 11:15, 26 March 2020 (PDT)
Enabran, I'll check into disabling the captcha. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 21:29, 26 March 2020 (PDT)
LIMA, all the page click counters are pretty much beta or untested versions. Any thoughts? -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 21:29, 26 March 2020 (PDT)
Great, thank you :-) Enabran (talk) 01:44, 27 March 2020 (PDT)
I would say to try GoogleAnalyticsMetrics but we become dependant to Google. ;-)
The Spammers are back. Enabran (talk) 01:50, 8 April 2020 (PDT)
Enabran, do you have an email address so I can send you questions you can translate in German? Thank you. Cheers!

TOS-Cast-Chaos

Oh man... chaos in the cast datas of Battlestar Galactica TOS!

For example, there is a name of a role during the credits. When you go to Imdb, there is another given name. Then you figure out that the actor was married x times and had x names. What do I do now when I create an article? Here in the Wiki, each role needs an article for the actor. Do I now give article the name given in the credits, the current name of the actor, their birthname or the artist name of IMDB?

This lady, for example: Janet Lynn Curtis the credits say: Janet Lynn Curtis - Sorell (only 1 r unlike the Sorrell here, anotehr mistake?) IMDb entry for her https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0193371/?ref_=nmbio_bio_nm

says Janet Prescott ??? how so??? Born as Janet Lynn Curtis, married to Glen A. Larson and therefore a Janet Larson or Janet Curtis-Larson. We need a guidline.Enabran (talk) 07:13, 31 March 2020 (PDT)

I see there was a discussion on this begun at Talk:Sheila DeWindt. It's best to follow what we've done with Janet Lansbury, with redirects from the original name as credited in the episode, and go from there. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 08:55, 31 March 2020 (PDT)
And what would be the accurate Articlename for Janet? Enabran (talk) 11:02, 31 March 2020 (PDT)
For Janet Lynn Curtis, the primary article name would be Janet Lansbury. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 17:36, 31 March 2020 (PDT)
Sure! But sorry I was not clear enough with my last post, I was meaning that Janet ;-)
and here we have the big mess Enabran (talk) 23:37, 31 March 2020 (PDT)
Oh! sorry! I thought they were the one and the same Janet! (They're not.) I've moved that to Janet Prescott... and I believe she was actually married to Glen Larson for a time! Worth further investigation! -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 07:41, 1 April 2020 (PDT)
That's what I have done. She was married with Larson from 1982 - 2008. It was her only marriage. She was born as Janet Lynn Curtis and she is only credited as forms of Janet Curtis or Janet Larson-Curtis. I do not know where the Prescot comes from. Other Sources name her Janet Larson-Curtis Enabran (talk) 09:44, 1 April 2020 (PDT)
She went by Curtis-Prescott in 2017 per this press release, so that's where Prescott comes from. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 10:08, 1 April 2020 (PDT)

Things I cannot do

If you have time, there is that family-tree-thing, that I never managed to do, what I want it to do. Maybe someone of you can repair that stuff. Here is one of 2 I use on the german page: TOS Adama Tree thank you --Enabran (talk) 14:26, 4 April 2020 (PDT)

Yes, I'll see about deploying the Family Tree extension in the next behind-the-scenes updates. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 14:47, 4 April 2020 (PDT)

Layout: When I have a template like this used for battles like that how can I force the Matrix to add a little space between "Ergebnis:" and "Entscheidender zylonischer Sieg..."?

Hi Enabran. I think I fixed it with adding a "padding-rigth" on the template, waiting until you have the next "Daybreak" skin. Cheers! --LIMAFOX76 (talk) 05:32, 5 April 2020 (PDT)
thank you Lima! It looks much better now. I will use it in my other templates too. Enabran (talk) 06:13, 5 April 2020 (PDT)

When I see the Castdata or Crewdata, is it possible to add 2 nationalities to the actors infobox? Tricia Helfer is both US and CAN. Maybe someting like you did with the Series 1,2,3 icons.

Uploading a new version of an existing file on Media Battlestar Wiki

Hi Joe,
Several times, I tried to upload a better version of existing files on the Media repository. Every time I have a error appearing and I have issues to retrieve it on the English wiki. Is it possible please to check and fix this point. It may be a question of read/write access or owner/group issues (www-data) for MediaWiki on the "Images" folder. Thank you very much. Cheers! --LIMAFOX76 (talk) 12:25, 7 April 2020 (PDT)

Which files in particular? -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 15:42, 7 April 2020 (PDT)
File:Dancer.jpg, File:Carillon.jpg, File:Anton.jpg for example. Some are okay now but every time, I had an error message for after uploading the update, and I had to refresh/purge several times in the media repository AND the English wiki to have the image in the good way. But now it's correct. --LIMAFOX76 (talk) 23:49, 7 April 2020 (PDT)
Ah, got it! I've run into that myself with some of the older images — even though it may throw a "Database Exception" error, it still uploads the image. I believe some of that is due to the fact that MW has changed so much, and even though I run the update/cleanup scripts, some of the info in the DB is so old that it throws these errors.
I am further aware of a lag when uploading an image to the Media Repository, and then having that information communicated through the API of the load balancer. It happens even on brand new files. Sometimes it's pretty quick/instantaneous, sometimes it isn't. I've surmised that it depends on what AWS is feeling at that particular moment. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 08:40, 8 April 2020 (PDT)
