Colonel Tigh is the executive officer (XO) of the Battlestar Galactica and is a close personal friend of Commander Adama.
A loyal and capable Colonial officer, Tigh is always at the ready to assist Adama. Unlike Adama, who is deeply religious, Tigh seems to be somewhat skeptical, as seen in Lost Planet of the Gods.
Depicted as somewhat uptight, Tigh shows some flexibility when he turns a blind eye to the theft of rations from the officer’s mess for Apollo’s party, again in The Lost Planet of the Gods.
In Saga of a Star World, we learn that Tigh and Adama flew together in their younger days. This early relationship is expanded on in the Battletstar Galactica comic, and in the recent video game.
Twice we see Colonel Tigh take command: when Cain was relieved of his command by Adama, Tigh assumed control of the Pegasus, and Tigh assumed command of the Fleet when Adama was incapacitated during the Cylon suicide attack in Fire in Space.

Colonel Tigh's counterpart in the new series is Saul Tigh.
