Born December 16 in Brooklyn, New York, Terry Carter has had a distinguished career in television, film and theater. Carter already had many credits in theater and radio before becoming one of the privates of Sergeant Bilko's platoon in the 1950's Phil Silvers Show. 
In that role, he was one of the few African-Americans appearing on TV screens in the United States in the 1950s.

In the mid-1960s, Carter worked as a newscaster for WBZ-TV in Boston and then as a commercial spokesman for Standard Oil. Later, he was cast as Gail Fisher's husband, policeman Marcus Fair, in a flashback episode of Mannix.
