Citation Needed[edit]

I'm sure we'll get a little more info by the episode, "Maelstrom", however, this name hasn't an aired source and may not be correct or be changed by airing, if the character is seen at all. Therefore I'm marking this for deletion until we confirm the source so we can keep track of this. I've updated the article with the quote from "Flesh and Bone." --Spencerian 07:33, 30 January 2007 (CST)

I pulled the info off another page and I assumed it cited the source, my bad. --Mercifull (Talk/Contribs) 07:35, 30 January 2007 (CST)
We could wait until the episode airs and delete/move it then if turns out to be false. Instead of deleting it now, and possibly having to add it again. When the promo pictures for "Maelstrom" are released, we might get a name --Serenity 07:45, 30 January 2007 (CST)
That was my plan, Serenity. Otherwise I would have deleted it outright as completely unsourced. I may rename it to simply "Mother of Kara Thrace" for now so I can remove the deletion tag as the other data is OK. Yeah, Mercifull, there appears to be a lot of either leaks or fanfic being generated out there in fan forums. One claims to have a snippet from "Maelstrom" and posted it. Caveat lecto. --Spencerian 07:49, 30 January 2007 (CST)
When I said "another page" I meant another page on this very wiki. --Mercifull (Talk/Contribs) 09:14, 30 January 2007 (CST)
Then its a double-whoops for self-referencing. No soup for you! :) The renaming solves both problems for now. --Spencerian 09:21, 30 January 2007 (CST)

Promo image. According to this, the Socrata name is correct. And that's an official SciFi Channel picture. I don't think they've ever been wrong so far. --Serenity 13:27, 1 February 2007 (CST)

Well, there was the whole "Barry Trammel/Barry Garner" mess, several miscues on whether Nora was married to Duck (The Resistance), Starbuck going to a baseship according to the promo text in A Measure of Salvation. And they can and have changed stuff at the very last minute, so I take nothing as canon until it airs. It's probably going to be right, but I would never bet on it. :) --Spencerian 14:57, 1 February 2007 (CST)
These promo pics are always very interesting. The patch on the bed of Socrata (see, I said it) shows "Caprica City Police". Kara is also shown back at her old apartment on Caprica (implying that she goes or is taken there), and her mandala of the Eye of Jupiter appears in both shots. Based on what I heard from the actress at a SF convention, this is going to be very very interesting to see. --Spencerian 15:03, 1 February 2007 (CST)

Its probably nothing and pure coincidence but look at this on the cream in the background.

Looks a bit like the mandala too hehe --Mercifull (Talk/Contribs) 08:34, 2 February 2007 (CST)
ROFL! Maybe that's where Kara stole from...erm was inspired by when she created her paintings --Serenity 08:36, 2 February 2007 (CST)
And of course theres this... right to the source of pain ^_^ --Mercifull (Talk/Contribs) 09:00, 2 February 2007 (CST)
Name is confirmed in "Malestrom" when Socrata is viewing a letter. MatthewFenton 04:25, 5 March 2007 (CST)

Not really a spoiler[edit]

Actually the only spoiler might be the photo. Otherwise there is no spoiler information whatsoever. She has been mentioned in "Flesh and Bone" and "The Farm" and that's all the page is saying. --Serenity 14:01, 2 March 2007 (CST)

Any sourced information in an article that has not been aired is a spoiler. The photo qualifies. We can remove the spoiler tag if the photo is removed. --Spencerian 15:01, 2 March 2007 (CST)
I understand that it's a policy, but a photo like this doesn't literally spoil anyone. It doesn't detract from anyone's enjoyment of the episode. But never mind, it's the next episode anyways... --Serenity 16:28, 2 March 2007 (CST)

Her rank[edit]

The letter she receives lists her as Corporal. That's a pretty low rank and seems to indicate that she retired right after the war, possibly being drafted. In the podcast, RDM says that the plans were for her to be a Sergeant Major; meaning career military for 20 years or so. I have the feeling that this also fits better to her whole character. Her congratulating her daughter for being the first officer in the family makes also a bit more sense if she was in the military for a long time. --Serenity 08:14, 6 March 2007 (CST)

Her rank is shown on the medical letter she reads. --Spencerian 08:30, 6 March 2007 (CST)
That's what I said in the first sentence, and I immediately noticed it. I just think that a higher rank, as originally indicated, would fit the character better. --Serenity 08:34, 6 March 2007 (CST)
Sorry, haven't had my coffee (and trying not to). Yeah, I do agree. She's a kind of person that should be more of a sergeant or petty officer. --Spencerian 08:45, 6 March 2007 (CST)
Well, while it may have been a typo/mistake of the art department or whoever, remember that the basic pay chart slides across up to 26 odd years for ALL the ranks. While in this era of "right-sizing" forces there is something of an "up or out" mentality that keeps the lower ranks younger (this is especially true of the officer ranks, where I'm vaguely aware of specific limits to the number of times you can be "passed over" for promotion before being forced to pack it in), it's entirely possible to retire from the military with a low rank... especially given a draft scenario. If you watch some of the background "behind the scenes" interviews with the guys that inspired "Band of Brothers", a lot of the guys that made it all the way from D-Day to the end of the war in Europe and left the service as privates. The military needs sharp people at ALL levels, and if all the good people were general officers everything would fall apart (because you'd have nobody to work the motorpool and keep those jeeps with stars on them up and running). --Steelviper 09:01, 6 March 2007 (CST)
Yeah, the way I see it, she served in the war and retired immediately after. In war-time it's normal to stay at a lower rank for some time. If she were professional soldier, her rank should be somewhat higher even without being promoted quickly (and I'm not saying she should be a high-ranking officer, but an NCO). --Serenity 09:10, 6 March 2007 (CST)

Letter[edit]

Speaking of the letter, that would be a screencap of outstanding value, both to this article as well as the veteran's hospital. --Steelviper 09:03, 6 March 2007 (CST)

That it would. The iTunes Store is tardy with the copy of this episode; if I can get it today, I shall. --Spencerian 09:33, 6 March 2007 (CST)
I'll try to get a screenshot later. Not sure if the iTunes version is of better quality though. --Serenity 09:43, 6 March 2007 (CST)
Here we go. Turned out pretty well. --Serenity 10:28, 6 March 2007 (CST)

Jungle planet[edit]

Does anyone remember what was the name of the jungle planet Socrata Thrace was stationed on during the first Cylon War? Kara mentioned it in "Maelstrom" -- was it Medra, Medihra or something like that? -- Spike 19:33, 8 April 2007 (CDT)

I'm not entirely sure but I think she said it was the jungles of Aerelon. --Kahran 22:33, 8 April 2007 (CDT)
Yeah it sounds like Medra. I've removed the "jungle planet" part, though it was probably me who wrote that. It's a common SciFi cliché that many planets have a uniform climate, but scientifically a more even distribution like on Earth is more likely. It could just mean that she was stationed in a region with jungles. --Serenity 09:12, 9 April 2007 (CDT)

rank revisited[edit]

My "Razor" DVD is still making its way across the pond, but I saw this in the noteworthy dialogue section:

Thrace: Hope for the best, plan for the worst, as my mom the sergeant-major used to say.

I'm glad that was clarified. It fits with the writers' comments and just makes more sense in the story. Socrata Thrace seems very much like a career soldier to me. Anyways, we should change all references to her rank accordingly. --Serenity 02:15, 6 December 2007 (CST)

The problem is that her letter from the Veteran's Hospital (which informs her about her cancer) states her rank as corporal. Is there a source for the "sergeant-major" rank other than Kara's comment in Razor? If not, I suggest her rank be changed to corporal, and that Kara's comment be treated as a sarcastic remark about her mother's failed aspiration to reach the rank of sergeant-major.
