Additional Information

Cloud 9 is a massive, Jump-capable luxury liner within the Fleet. Extensively damaged during the Cylon Attack, she had to be evacuated while repairs were made (Colonial Day). Following her repairs, she returned to full service within the Fleet, and provided a venue for the first sitting of the interim Quorum of Twelve convened by President Roslin (Colonial Day).

The ship is unique in that as well as traditional living and working space on board, Cloud 9 incoporates a huge pressurised biome that provides a realistic simulation of a planetary surface, including gardens, buildings, trees - even an artificial sky.

After her flight from captivity in Galactica's brig, President Roslin, along with Captain Lee Adama and priestess Elosha, flee in a Raptor to Cloud 9 to hide from Colonel Tigh and Commander Adama. The group is taken in by Tom Zarek, who meets with them onboard Cloud 9. Cloud 9's high volume of intraship traffic makes it virtually impossible for Galactica to track their final hiding place (Resistance).

Cloud 9's destruction.

Cloud 9 also has a swimming area. Commander Adama's orders shore leave for Colonel Tigh, advising him to take a swim and relax from his unexpected command duties when Adama was injured. Colonel Tigh never leaves Galactica to enjoy it as his Raptor was sabotaged in an assassination attempt (Final Cut).

Many of Cloud 9's accommodations appear more like hotel rooms than bunks or seats. A passenger, Shevon, lives in one such room, where Captain Adama visits her for intimate moments. Shevon is removed from her room by Phelan's thugs, and Captain Adama later finds the killer of Commander Jack Fisk in the room, dead of a gunshot to the head (Black Market). The Cylon sympathizer/terrorist group "Demand Peace" also operates out of a suite located onboard Cloud 9 (Epiphanies).

Cloud 9 and several smaller ships are destroyed by Gina just after the presidential election using a nuclear device that was given to her by Gaius Baltar (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II).

Trivia[edit]

The origin of the term "cloud nine" is curious in that it is an American expression popularized in the 20th Century as a term describing euphoria or higher state of bliss. The term appeared to originate from the 1896 edition of the International Cloud Atlas, where the cumulo-nimbus cloud was given the designation of nine, which was the highest altitude that a cloud could be, according to information from the Wiktionary. Such parallel use of everyday Earth/American terms aids in making viewers comfortable in watching Battlestar Galactica, but may confuse Battlestar Wiki contributors (as does the articles Lords of Kobol or Columbia) as to how such Earth-specific or cultually-specific terms could have been introduced into the language of the Twelve Colonies. (Of course, if viewers take into account that they are not necessarily hearing the characters speak English, but their own Colonial tongue, perhaps "Cloud Nine" is merely the closest English approximation of a Colonial term of happiness.)
