I however think it is more likely that the ammunition he is carrying is explosive. You see him in the [[~~Mini-Series~~]] shoot the guy attempting to jump on the Raptor as Sharon is taking off, and the impact exploded with guts flying out. RDM even talked about the explosive handgun during the DVD commentary as an idea he got from Bladerunner.
