Carl Lumbly (born August 14 1952 in Minneapolis, Minnesota) is an American actor.

Lumbly was born and grew up in Minneapolis, where he attended South High School. There he pursued academics and sport as arts, including theatre, were not emphasised in the curriculum. Following high school, he attended Macalester College, where he considered pursuing medicine or law after guidance from his father. He ultimately decided to pursue a major in English, while he took part in student productions like Guys and Dolls. Upon graduation, Lumbly sought work as a technical writer for 3M while pursuing part time work as a reporter for the Associated Press.

In the mid-70s he joined Dudley Riggs' Brave New Workshop, where he performed in a variety of satirical revues. He left Minnesota, moving to San Francisco and then L.A. where on both occasions he landed on-stage roles opposite Danny Glover.

Soon after, Lumbly was cast as Marcus Petrie in the hit televeision series Cagney and Lacey, a role he continued to play for six years, bringing him steady work and recognition as a television actor.

In 2001 he joined the cast of Alias and, after the show's conclusion in 2006, guest starred on Battlestar Galactica as Daniel Novacek in the third season episode "Hero".

Notes

• David Eick's Video Blog on SciFi.com^[1] alludes several times that Bulldog was possibly to become a recurring character, on the condition Lumbly was able to commit to shooting further episodes. Unfortunately it seems that nothing more ever came of this.
