Athena Academy receives new record.

Athena Academy Applications at an All-Time High is a The Caprican News article written by Ann Royall. It was printed in Ianuarius 16, YR42.

Story[edit]

When the admissions deadline finally rolled around on 1 Ianuarius, the staff at the Athena Academy had received a record 528 applications. This breaks the previous record of 312 just two years ago.

The surge in applications is likely related to the recent accolades the school has received from the Caprica Minister of Education - two years in a row. Dean of Admissions Pippa Enevold said, "In recent years, the Athena Academy has become one of the most prestigious high schools of the Alpha Colonies. We attract the best students from all 12 Colonies and are able to offer them the most thorough and modern educations without sacrificing the classical training all burgeoning scholars should have."

Located on the lush School Complex campus on Learning Boulevard South, the Athena Academy was founded 95 years ago as an all-girls school. With the motto "Cast Aside the Temporal. Reach for the Eternal" the Academy grew from a small, relatively unknown commuter school, to the highly respected and competitive academic institution it is today. Headmistress Sister Clarice Willow stated, "We try to mold our children into productive adults who make their mark on society."

The first graduating class at the Athena Academy was just 6 - a far cry from today. And three months from now, just ten percent of the students who applied for entrance will be able to don the deep Academy red and Reach for the Eternal.

Academy in mourning.

Athena Academy in Mourning is a The Caprican News article written by Ann Royall. It was printed in Februarius 5, YR42.

Story[edit]

Two students from the Athena Academy were among those killed in the MAGLEV explosion that claimed 500 lives.

Zoe Graystone and Ben Stark, both in their 3rd year at the academy, were among those that perished when the train they were riding on was blown off its tracks and crashed to street below.

"This is completely lunar," a 1st year student said, "The whole Athena community is in mourning."

Athena students were huddled together in small groups with tear-filled eyes as news spread across the Academy campus. Others sat looking at news updates on their e-sheets in horrified disbelief. "This is a terrible tragedy and we're all in shock," said a member of the faculty who wished to remain anonymous. "It's especially devastating for those students who were close to Mr. Stark and Ms. Graystone."

Grief counselors are on-hand at Athena for faculty and students who need help dealing with the tragic event. It is still unclear why Stark and Graystone were not in school at the time of the attack.

Zoe Graystone is survived by her parents, surgeon, Dr. Amanda Graystone and technology mogul Dr. Daniel Graystone. Ben Stark was the only child of Natalie Stark. Neither family could be reached for comment.

Graystone-Stark Memorial Scholarship Fund Established at Athena Academy is a The Caprican Entertainment article written by Ann Royall. It was printed in Februarius 7, YR42.

Story[edit]

A memorial concert and fundraising drive will be held at the Athena Academy next week to benefit the newly established Graystone-Stark Memorial Scholarship Fund. This prize, named in honor of the Athena students killed in the attack, will be awarded on a yearly basis to students who would not otherwise be able to afford school tuition.

"It seems a fitting tribute to the Academy students we've lost to create a memorial scholarship in their honor," said Charlotte Bader, Academy communications representative. "Zoe and Ben were outstanding members of our community who exemplified the spirit of our institution. We are proud to have a scholarship that bears their names so they will never be forgotten."

The memorial event will feature live music by the Caprica City Philharmonic who is donating their time for this worthy cause. If you are unable to attend but would still like to help, donations may be mailed to the Graystone-Stark Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o The Athena Academy, 5633 Learning Blvd. South. Caprica City.

Graystone-Stark Memorial Scholarship Fund Renamed is a The Caprican News article written by Ann Royall. It was printed in Februarius 9, YR42.

Story[edit]

In light of recent events the administration at the Athena Academy has decided to rename the newly established Graystone-Stark Memorial Scholarship Fund. The Academy issued an official statement yesterday announcing the change:

"We are saddened and disappointed by the news of Graystone's possible connection to the MAGLEV attack. We no longer feel comfortable supporting a scholarship in the name of anyone who might have had a hand in causing this terrible tragedy. The Athena Academy, in no way, condones the actions of these this student or the STO." The endowment will now be known as the Athena Academy MAGLEV Memorial Fund. Donations to the fund can still be made through the Academy. An apology has been issued to the Caprica City Philharmonic and recent donors. All have been made aware of the name change.

GDD Raids Athena Academy' is a The Caprican News article written by Ann Royall. It was printed in Martius 5, YR42.

Story[edit]

The Global Defense Department descended on The Athena Academy last week and searched every locker and classroom looking for some evidence of Zoe Graystone's involvement in the MAGLEV attack. They found none. "Our students were terrified," said headmistress Clarice Willow, "They didn't understand why this was happening to them. First they lose their classmates in the attack, now this."

According to the Global Defense Department, Amanda Graystone's implication of her daughter's involvement in the MAGLEV bombing gave the GDD probable cause to search Zoe's property. This included the Athena Academy, where Zoe was a student at the time of her death.

Graystone Computer Science Wing Coming to AU is a The Caprican Politics article written by Ann Royall. It was printed in Ianuarius 12, YR42.

Story[edit]

A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held next Wednesday at Apollo University to dedicate the new Zoe Graystone Computer Science Wing. The building is named for the daughter of Apollo University alumni Daniel Graystone, CEO and founder of Graystone Industries. Groundbreaking began two years ago on the state-of-the-art multi million-cubit facility, which features networked lecture halls, state-of-the-art research labs, and Graystone computers and holobands in every classroom. This new wing will allow the university to expand its computer science curricula and attract the brightest academic stars and cutting edge researchers from throughout the 12 Colonies.

Daniel Graystone, who holds a PhD from Apollo University's Computer Science program, stated that he wants this facility, "To inspire up-and-coming computer scientists and robotics engineers - especially young women." Graystone hopes that his daughter Zoe, currently attending the Athena Academy, will one day attend classes in the building that now bears her name.

The ceremony will last from 2-4 pm on the Apollo University campus. Members of the faculty, Caprica City government officials, leaders from the Caprica tech industry, and the Graystone family are expected to attend.

"Any poor publicity will negatively affect stock prices." —Cyndra Malone

From Bad to Worse For Graystone Industries is a The Caprican Politics article written by Ann Royall. It was printed in Februarius 11, YR42.

Story[edit]

Just one week ago, Graystone Industries stock was at a 52 week low following rumors of loan default. And that was before Dr. Amanda Graystone announced her daughter's involvement in the MAGLEV bombing. Suffice it to say that things are not looking good for Graystone. Can the pioneering technology company and its founder, Daniel Graystone, recover? Computer sales have slowed to a crawl and the safety of the Holoband has been called into question as Capricans come to terms with the news that the daughter of the CEO of Graystone Industries was in some way linked to the attack. As expected, stocks are on a steady decline as well. "Any poor publicity will negatively affect stock prices," said business analyst Cyndra Malone, "But an announcement of this magnitude could be catastrophic to the future of the company." Graystone Industries still has yet to release a statement about Zoe Graystone's involvement in the attack. A Graystone Industries spokesperson chose not to comment for this article.

BREAKING: Holo Cafe Bombed is a The Caprican News article written by Ann Royall. It was published in Februarius 27, YR42.

Story[edit]

Early yesterday morning, a small bomb ripped apart a Holo Cafe in downtown Caprica City. The café was closed at the time the bomb went off. No one was inside at the time and no one on the street outside the cafe was hurt. Residents who live nearby felt the ground shake beneath them when the bomb went off. Many were shaken out of a sound sleep, disoriented. Though the size of the explosion was small in comparison to the MAGLEV Train 23 attack, citizens were frightened to learn that another bombing had hit Caprica City.

Though the incident appears to be an act of vandalism, it's impossible to rule out some connection to the previous terror attack on Caprica City. The Caprica City Police Department is working with the Global Defense Department to determine the cause of the attack. The GDD investigation is ongoing.

Story[edit]

A bomb went off in a Holo Cafe on the west side of Caprica City early this morning. Thankfully, nobody was injured in the attack. It is unclear whether this Holo Cafe bombing is related to the one that occurred last month or if it might just be a copycat crime. Though the Global Defense Department has yet to make an arrest, they do suspect STO involvement. Eyewitness testimonies are being taken and security tapes are in the process of being reviewed.

The MAGLEV bombing.

MAGLEV Memorial Ceremony to be held in Apollo Park is a The Caprican News article written by Ann Royall. It was printed in Februarius 6, YR42.

Story[edit]

A formal ceremony will be held in Apollo Park this week to honor the victims of the MAGLEV bombing. 500 of people were killed and over 100 injured when a bomb was set off mid-day on a crowded MAGLEV train soon after it departed from the Caprica City downtown station. Though the monotheism group Soldiers of the One are believe to be behind the attack, their exact motives for blowing up a MAGLEV train remain unclear.

Capricans are still on edge as many fear it will happen again. Caprica City officials hope that the memorial ceremony will help alleviate some of this sorrow and fear. "We are all still distraught by this terrible and senseless tragedy," said Joan Leyte, Caprica's new Minister of Defense. "We will do everything we can to help Capricans begin to heal and to make them feel safe again in the city they call home."

The Mayor of Caprica City, members of the Department of Justice, and families of the deceased are scheduled to speak at the event, which will also be broadcast live on CapTV. The memorial is being sponsored by Graystone Industries. Daniel and Amanda Graystone are the parents of Zoe Graystone who was killed in the attack.

Citizens Use Marshmallows to Protest Caprica Government is a The Caprican Politics article written by Ann Royall. It was printed in Martius 7, YR42.

Story[edit]

Well, the citizen protest of the Caprican Government has just gotten a little weirder...and a little more delicious. As we reported last week, citizens have been outraged that the government has not done more to bring the MAGLEV bomber to justice. The citizen group Mothers Against Terrorist Tactics (MATT) and others were accusing the of being "soft" on terrorism.

Well now, get this, in order to pretest their "soft" investigative techniques, Capricans have begun showing their anger by mailing marshmallows to the government! We can't wait to see how this ends!

We sure do hope Agent Durham likes s'mores!

Storm of the Century Hits Caprica is a The Caprican News article written by Ann Royall. It was printed in Februarius 11, YR42.

Story[edit]

It took just twenty minutes last night for Caprica City's most powerful lightning storm in history to rip through the streets. It appeared as if out of nowhere and then, just as quickly, it was gone. Dog howls and car alarms could be heard echoing through the city after the lightning had ceased. Thirty homes were damaged in the city and surrounding areas when the nearly one hundred strikes hit. Minor injuries were reported but, thankfully, no one was killed. Power outages were reported in several parts of the city but power was restored within several hours.

Where were you when the storm hit? What was is like for you? The Caprican wants to know. Sound off in the comments below!

Pipe Bursts on Olympic Street is a The Caprican News article written by Ann Royall. It was printed in Februarius 27, YR42.

Story[edit]

A water main burst early this morning in downtown Caprica City causing the street to fill with water and several nearby residents to be evacuated. Water began filling the street at 3:17 AM in front of 615 Olympic Street. Emergency workers from the Department of Public Works were called in and managed to shut off the water and repair damaged pipe. However, work crews are still in the process of clearing the flooded area and cannot guarantee that the road will be cleared by the day's end. "We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused to drivers or nearby residents," said Althea Erasmus from the City of Caprica DPW. "Sometimes, these things happen."

It is still unclear what caused the pipe to burst but when asked if it might be related to MAGLEV attack or the recent Holo Cafe bombing, Ms. Erasmus quickly replied. "I can say with certainty that this was an accident and is in no way related. It's just a nuisance, not an act of terrorism." Caprica City Police are still directing traffic away from that area. Officers say several blocks of Olympic Street could remain closed during tomorrow's commute.

Catch the Art Treasures of Kobol Exhibit is a The Caprican Lifestyle article written by Ann Royall. It was printed in Martius 8, YR42.

Story[edit]

We've all been hearing about Kobol for as long as we can remember. We learned about it in our history books, we watched movies about it in school, and we heard our parent's stories. But it's rare to actually see objects from the old world live and in person. Well, now's your chance! Head to the Caprica Art Museum to catch the Art Treasures of Kobol Exhibit and see cultural artifacts from humanity's original homeland.

Many of the objects in the exhibit are large-scale wooden sculptures, which depict the stories of the ancients and their myths and legends. Other pieces are said to be representative of the massive bodies of water and stunning landscapes that were home to the ancient humans who lived side-by-side with their gods, the Lords of Kobol. Whatever your beliefs about the ancients, though, the beauty of the objects in this exhibit is undeniable. So do yourself, and your family, a favor and go see it now!

All systems go for the third annual University Robotics Competition!

Qualai University Defends Robot Title is a The Caprican Lifestyle article written by Ann Royall. It was printed in Martius 28, YR42.

Story[edit]

As we reported last week, engineering students from local universities gathered to compete in the third annual University Robotics Competition (URC). Even Apollo University's two teams weren't enough to unseat last year's winning team from Qualai University.

"The level of competition gets better and better every year," said URC founder Marlon Reiner. "The robots built by these students are comparable to some of the prototypes coming out of smaller electronics companies here on Caprica. I'm blown away by the young talent in this room." Teams of four had just 48 hours to complete their entries (electronics as well as code) and the results were astonishing. The top three winning robots were:

1st Place Qualai University: SMART Hand This prosthetic robot is designed to assist recent amputees in building dexterity in their hands. Sensors in the prosthesis, attached to the wearer's skin, translate value signals into pulses, readable by the brain's primary motor cortex.

2nd Place Apollo University (Team A): ArtBot A robot designed to mimic the style of a variety of famous artists. Just put a canvas or large piece of paper underneath, set an object in front of ArtBot's "eye" (a small camera on the front of the bot), and watch it create!

3rd Place Caprica City University: 360 Degree Catapult Designed to help win at paintball, this bot can swing its catapult in all directions at lightning speeds. The CCU team will challenge any takers to outrun or outsmart their bot next weekend at the school's pyramid field.

It is noteworthy that the top finishers were not battle-bots this year, as they have been in previous years. Perhaps this is a subtle commentary by the students or the judges on their dislike of the military technology race in the Colonies. Or perhaps it's just a coincidence.

The team from Qualai U is thrilled to be the winner for the second year in a row, but they're not resting on their laurels. "We're already thinking of ideas for next year," said QU team captain Wella Spence, "only one of our team members is a senior this year so almost all of us are coming back." Well I, for one, look forward to seeing what Qualai, and all of the talented students, have in store for us next year.

Road Work on Colonial 5 Nears Completion is a The Caprican News article written by Ann Royall. It was printed in Martius 29, YR42.

Story[edit]

After almost two years, and close to one million cubits of the city's tax dollars, roadwork on Colonial Highway 5 is finally nearing completion. What was once a road paved with low-grade asphalt and filled with potholes, is now a state-of-the-art roadway. "Though the repairs have taken longer than expected, we're extremely pleased with the results," said Althea Erasmus from the City of Caprica Department of Public Works "and we think the citizens will be, too."

The repairs included a thorough re-paving, new guard rails, and a widening of the roadway in some areas. And with only three days work ahead left to go, the repair team at the DPW is ready to celebrate. "Though that storm a while back slowed us down by a good month or so, we're finally in the home stretch," said longtime DPW worker Jonas Malkas.

Well I, for one, am looking forward to enjoying the fruits of their labor (and our tax cubits). Let us know what you think about fancy new Colonial 5 after you've taken it for a test drive! Sound off in the comments below.

Holly Legrand, the star of One.

Chatting with Holly Legrand on the Set of 'One' is a The Caprican Entertainment article written by Ann Royall. It was printed in November 3, YR42.

Story[edit]

It's breathtaking up here in the Gramadas, the vast Gemenon mountain range you can actually see from space. I'm on a particularly narrow road winding up the side of a particularly narrow slope, keeping one eye on the amazing view and another on the safety team who have done their best to rope off the edges and now stand guard to make sure no one takes a step in the wrong direction (that direction being "down").

No, I'm not on a hike, nor have I been kidnapped. I'm on location with One, the new action film starring Holly Legrand, one of Gemenon's rising stars.

One follows the adventures of a Gemenese teenager (Legrand) who's arrested for breaking and entering and spends a harrowing year in a youth rehabilitation program. She emerges a hardened warrior, and her skills attract the attention of the STO. She ends up becoming one of the organization's top operatives and is charged with instigating the most elaborate terrorist action in STO history.

I asked Ms. Legrand if she thought maybe the movie was a little too, shall we say, "topical," in light of current events on Caprica.

"Absolutely," she says without hesitation, her eyes even more fiercely blue in person than they are on screen. "I don't think it's in bad taste, and I don't think it will keep people from seeing it. Art should reflect life, and in a timely manner, at that. It's the responsibility of art."

I asked her if she thinks an action thriller where her character sleeps with no less than three men and kills no less than three dozen really constitutes as "art."

"I hate that," she says as she's being fitted with a gruesome makeup prosthetic (her character gets her ear sliced off in one scene). "All creative works are art. The particular content of a piece doesn't dictate that. The act of creation itself, the bringing together of many talents with one goal...how is that not art?"

I asked her about the rumors regarding her real-life sympathies toward the STO.

"It's something every Gemenese kid has to go through," she says. "I'm Gemenese, I grew up with that temptation. The STO promises a life of standing for something, making a difference. That's enough for some kids, whether it involves murder or not. 'Sympathies,' yes, that might be the right term - I feel sorry for all of them, if anything."

I watched as Ms. Legrand then proceeded to shoot a scene involving her character (referred to only as the "One" of the title) smashing a man's nether regions with a brick.

"I love this job!" she exclaimed after the director had called "Cut." She gave the poor guy one last smash for good measure, and the crew burst into laughter. "Love it!"

Stay tuned - I'll be speaking with Holly Legrand again.
