While questioning Anders's legitimacy, at gunpoint, she demands that he tell her how many "foul breaks" the Buccaneers had in the playoff against Aerelon. American viewers would recognize some veiled references to the National Football League, starting with the team's nickname - a namesake of the 2003 Super Bowl champion, Tampa bay Buccaneers. Anders also tells Thrace that one foul break was called back, after instant replay, suggesting another NFL parallel - officials reviewing replays before making final rulings. (The first American sports league to employ instant replay was actually the United States Fotball League, a long-defunct league that existed from 1983-1985). Helo confirms the validity of Anders's answers to Thrace, saying he lost money on the game, again paralleling the current state of affairs in Earth sporting events - the influence and importance of wagering. Finally, Latin American history and French scholars will note that "Buccaneer" was a French name given to Caribbean pirates who roasted meat on a crude, makeshift grill called a "boucan," hence the name "Buccaneer" becoming synonymous with "Pirate" in the English lexicon.

The patch for the Caprica Buccaneers.
The C-Bucs' old logo, 58 years prior to the Cylon holocaust.

The Caprica Buccaneers are a pyramid team from Caprica, captained by Samuel T. Anders at the time of the Fall of the Twelve Colonies. The team has existed for roughly a century before the Fall of the Twelve Colonies.

Pre-Fall

58 years before the Cylon holocaust, the Buccaneers are owned by Daniel Graystone, inventor of the Cylon Prototype. Owning the Buccaneers had been a childhood fantasy of Graystone's. Graystone invited Joseph Adama and his son, William, to court-side seats weeks after Ben Stark's suicide bombing of the Lev claimed the lives of members from both families.

Even in his youth, William Adama was sharply critical of the Buccaneers, noting that Rod Jenkins was responsible for losing the game he watched (Caprica pilot) and, later in his life, noted that he was a Picon Panthers fan (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II).

Post-Fall

The Buccaneers are undertaking high-altitude training in the mountains at the time of the Cylon nuclear bombardment of Caprica (The Plan). Shielded from the shockwaves and a bulk of the nuclear fallout, they manage to round up hikers and other survivors camping in the mountains into a sizable resistance force. From there, they siege supply depots, hospitals (for anti-radiation meds) and destroy Cylon convoys (Resistance).

The Buccaneers' team roster consisted of Anders, "Jo-Man", "Rally", "Ten Point", Sue-Shaun, "Crip-key" and Morris Fink (Resistance), "Coach", and "Doc Simon" (The Plan).

With her comments, Kara Thrace—who mentions to Anders later on that a "bum knee" robbed her of a professional pyramid career—either was not a fan of the team, or was a sharp critic. While questioning Anders' legitimacy at gunpoint, she demands that he tell her how many "foul breaks" the Buccaneers had in the playoff against Aerelon. Anders tells Thrace that one foul break was called back, after instant replay, suggesting a parallel to the National Football League, cricket, and other major sporting leagues, in which officials may review replays after a play before making a final decision (Resistance). Despite Anders' popularity and skill, the Buccaneers never won a championship while under his lead (Daybreak, Part I).

Notes

  • The team's nickname may be a reference to the 2003 Super Bowl champion, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the National Football League.
  • The team is often referred to as the "C-Bucs" for short.
  • In the Caprica pilot, the team's colors are blue, white, and green, the same colors as the Vancouver Canucks. Incidentally, the current Buccaneer's colors - black, red, and yellow - are the old Canucks colors.
  • It is unclear whether the Bucs are meant to represent just Caprica City, or the planet Caprica as a whole since the only other known team is the Picon Panthers, and we have no way of knowing whether the other eleven colonies follow the same naming convention for their capitals (Picon City, Aerelon City, Tauron City, and so on) as Caprica. However, since they were separate sovereign nations before the Cylons revolted, it would make more sense if there were multiple teams per world.
