Thousand-Yahren War

The flagship of the Colonial Fleet is destroyed in the Cylon coup de grâce (Saga of a Star World).

In the Original Series, the Thousand-Yahren War was the conflict between the Cylon Empire and an intergalactic federation including the Twelve Colonies. It began when the Colonies aided the Hasari in taking back "their nation" from the Cylons. The exact nature of the Hasari and their relationship to the Colonies remains unknown. Five hundred yahren into the War, the Colonials developed the first battlestars; of these original five hundred battlestars^{[citation needed]}, only seven battlestars (six at Cimtar, and one other, presumed destroyed in an earlier battle) would survive till the end of the conflict.

The earliest battle (mentioned in the series) was the Battle of Cosmora Archipelago (Take the Celestra).

The Thousand-Yahren War ended with the Battle of Cimtar; Count Baltar, a Colonial double-agent for the Cylons, tricked President Adar into believing the Cylons wished to negotiate a truce; it was a ruse, and while a force of one thousand Raiders destroyed four of the last five battlestars (including Adar's Atlantia), the basestar fleet destroyed the Twelve Colonies.

The remaining fleet of 220 civilian ships were escorted to safety by the battlestar Galactica.

In the Re-imagined Series, the Twelve Colonies first fought their creations, the Cylons, in the 12-year long Cylon War. After a 40-year armistice, the Cylons return, complete with a new humanoid appearance, to destroy the Colonies, aided unwittingly by a scientist named Gaius Baltar (Miniseries).
