The Gold Cluster, sometimes referred to as the "Star Cluster," is the Colonials' highest battle award.[1]

Sire Uri and the Quorum organize a gathering to give this decoration to Apollo, Starbuck, and Boomer for their roles in clearing the Straits of Madagon for the Fleet, allowing them to make it to Carillon in time to resupply. The award is, in part, a political move on Uri's part to attempt to mollify Adama. Uri plans on asking for the disarmament of the Fleet at the award ceremony, hoping that doing so would pacify the aggression of the Cylons (TOS: "Saga of a Star World").

Separate Continuity[edit]

After Major Sheba's assault force slays Major Boomer's assailant, Chief Paris, aboard Hephaestus, Sheba jokes that he wouldn't be awarded "the Golden Cluster if you don't get shot at least once"[2] (RH: Armageddon).

Golden Queen is an old, battered sub-light shuttle that "looks like it should have been scrap-iron yahrens ago".

Captained by Jaspar, an intergalactic proprietor, the ship narrowly escapes the Cylons with the help of Apollo, Athena and Starbuck and is brought aboard Galactica for repairs (I Have Seen Earth).
A Command Centurion announces the arrival of the Imperious Leader.

Command Centurions are analogous with commanders in the Colonial Military. They typically command basestars (TOS: "The Hand of God") and military outposts ("The Gun on Ice Planet Zero, Part I,""The Gun on Ice Planet Zero, Part II"). Command are visually distinguished from regular Centurions by their gold plated armor. The voices of Command Centurions are known to have a lower pitch than the typical Cylon Centurion.

Command Centurion Vulpa commands the remote outpost on Arcta (The Gun on Ice Planet Zero, Part I and Part II). An unnamed Command Centurion announces the arrival of the Imperious Leader on Gamoray, and several are seen standing guard in the presence of the Cylon leader (TOS: "The Living Legend, Part II"). Another Command Centurion commands the basestar that Galactica engages in battle (TOS: "The Hand of God").

Notes[edit]

  • Both the Gold Command Cylon Centurions and the Silver Cylon Centurions were voiced with an EMS Vocoder 2000 [1] (verified in the book 'How to Wreck a Nice Beach' by Dave Tompkins) by voice-actor Michael Santiago.
Starbuck wagers cubits at the Pyramid table (TOS: "The Man with Nine Lives").

Cubits are a form of government-regulated currency used throughout the Twelve Colonies in both the Original Series and Re-imagined Series.

In the Original Series[edit]

Cubits were normally seen in coin form. Frequently, viewers see cubits wagered in pyramid games, usually while Starbuck is playing (TOS: "The Man with Nine Lives").

In Galactica 1980[edit]

Cubits are much the same in terms of appearance from the Original Series. However, it is revealed that they were made out of auric, the Colonial term for gold (1980: "The Super Scouts, Part I").

In the Re-imagined Series[edit]

Betting with gold and silver cubits during a game of Triad (TRS: "Act of Contrition").

The cubit typically comes in both a coin and paper form used for at least a century (CAP: "Pilot" and "Apotheosis"), and existing within a decade following the Fall of the Twelve Colonies (TRS: "Miniseries", "Daybreak, Part III"). The art and layout for both coin and paper forms exhibit minimal change despite the decades.[1]

The paper version is shown to come in denominations of 100, 500 (TRS: "Act of Contrition") and 1000 (TRS: Miniseries, Colonial Day); there are very likely others in smaller denominations. The paper version also includes the shorthand for cubit "cb," next to the number it denotes. Coin versions of cubits also exist and bear the icon of the colony of origin on at one side with the Colonial seal on the other, and are coined in both gold- and silver-color metals (TRS: "Black Market").

Currency within the refugee fleet led by Galactica became technically worthless as pointed out by Tom Zarek. However, President Roslin's administration strives to address this. Presidential aide Wallace Gray is instrumental in a move to return the Fleet to a currency-based economy to allow commerce in the Fleet to continue, so this form of currency is still utilized (TRS: "Colonial Day").

As the conditions within the Fleet deteriorated, bartering for goods and services became more commonplace, including the use of indentured servants (TRS: "Black Market", "Dirty Hands")

Additional Imagery[edit]

Notes[edit]

  • The Cubit is an ancient unit of measurement used by various civilizations (varying in size between them). It is mentioned several times in the Bible, most prominently in the Old Testament descriptions of Noah's Ark and the Temple of Solomon. The natural cubit is based on the distance between thumb and another finger to the elbow on an average person, around 1.5 feet (0.5m).
  • As a system of currency, the Cubit is somewhat analogous to the Euro, the international currency of much of the European Union. Cubits, like Euros, are universally accepted across all twelve Colonies and were the common currency long before the federal government was established with the signing of the Articles of Colonization (Caprica).
  • The artwork for the Colonial cubits used in the show includes the phrase "Seventh Millennium of Time". This is a nod to the Original Series, as that series's opening is set just before the seventh millennium of time. The artwork also includes a previous concept of the Colonial "bird" seal drawn by Ken Rabehl.
  • All text and numbers on the Colonial cubits used in the show use the typeface Abduction [2] .

Refernces[edit]

  1. This is due to the fact that Caprica reused artwork for props depicted in the Re-imagined Series.

The Golden Toaster Awards are a fan-created, fan-operated annual awards show which was created by the posters on the official Scifi.com Battlestar Galactica messageboard, as well as other fansites.

Overview[edit]

Process[edit]

Over a period of several months leading up to the awards, nominations and categories were developed and put forward to the fan organizers of the event, who then issued an official award and nomination ballot on the messageboards. Voting then took place on a specially designed, official voting webpage.

Categories and nominations are made up entirely by the fans, and then agreed upon as an eligible category by consensus. For example, Season 1 had no "Best Battlestar" category because besides side references to other ships like Atlantia, Galactica was the one that was really showcased, so this would not really be a fair competition and thus was not made into a category. However, practically anything for which three or more eligible competitors can be found can be turned into a category, such as the "Best Usage of the Word "Frak" category. Different years might therefore have several new categories.

Presentation[edit]

Finally, the awards are "presented" in an "online awards show": in an official live Golden Toaster Awards message thread, several posters have been pre-selected as "presenters" for a certain category, and in the Awards message-thread they then introduce their assigned category. They introduce the category, give a short speech about it, and list the nominees (just like in any "live" awards show), and soon afterwards that person announces who won. Although it takes place on a messageboard, it occurs in real time, and the "show" lasts several hours. However, this event is not limited to only those fans who are presenting awards: anyone can post in the middle of the awards thread to chime in with their feelings, cheer on hopeful candidates, and opine.

Awards[edit]

First Golden Toaster Awards - Miniseries & Season One[edit]

The First Annual Golden Toaster Awards were held on October 14th, 2005. Considered a major event within the online fanbase, hundreds of ballots were cast. The first awards were held at GalacticaActual.com because the Scfi.com messageboards were being upgraded at the time to deal with hacker attacks, bandwidth and technical issues.

Carbon copies of the awards printed with the Golden Toaster Award art were mailed to the Battlestar Galactica production office, and they were handed out to all cast members at the season two wrap-party.

For the first awards, it was decided that Cylons who had distinct enough personalities should be considered separate characters, thus the Number Six who oversaw the Cylon experiment with Helo and got into a fight with Starbuck in "Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II," Shelly Godfrey, and the copy that claimed to be a computer chip in Baltar's mind, were considered different characters and actually competed with each other. This convention was dropped after the first awards, because during the nominations process fans found it to be too confusing.

The first annual awards covered both the Miniseries and the 13 episode first season. All subsequent awards will cover one full 20-episode season (thus there are no awards for the first ten episodes of Season 2, then a separate set of awards for the final 10, but one comprehensive set of awards that includes all 20 episodes).

Second Golden Toaster Awards - Season Two[edit]

The Second Annual Golden Toaster Awards were held on June 30, 2006. Series creator Ron Moore and his wife Terry "Mrs.Ron" Moore were in attendance. Terry presented The Solium award, while Ron presented the Best Usage of the Word "Frak" and Best Episode awards. 890 votes were cast in the second GTA's, and affiliated sites stretched across the globe as German fansite www.Caprica-City.de joined in and contributed over 50 votes.

French Golden Toaster Awards[edit]

Overview[edit]

For the first time, the Golden Toaster Awards were adapted in another language, French. Since it was now in another country, the process had to be re-adapted. For instance, a special jury was created to deliberate on the nominations (between 4 to 6 per category). However, the voting is open to anyone, on a specially designed official voting webpage.

Categories also had to be renamed, like "The TOSser," renamed "La SOupe," and "Best Line" transformed into "Best Original Quote" (to fit with "Best French Quote"). But most of the original categories were retained, as well as some Anglophone categories such as "The Best Usage of the Word "Frak"" category.

The French Golden Toaster Awards are also held in an official live Golden Toaster Awards Ceremony message thread.

First French Golden Toaster Awards - Miniseries & Season One[edit]

The jury's deliberations on the nominations were held from September 15th to October 1st, 2006. There are 37 categories, each containing between 4 and 6 nominations. Nominations were announced during the month of November.

The official voting site was : www.fgta.fr It was opened during the night between December 23rd, 2006 and December 24th, 2006 and closed on February 10th, 2007.

The French Golden Toaster Awards ceremony was held on Saturday, February 17th, 2007 on the battlestar-galactica.fr board. It started with the Red Carpet at 6PM and was followed by the ceremony at 7:30PM (GMT+1).
